May 1997

Friday 2 May 1997
Poor old Ashley was still caught between a rock and a hard place as he fretted over the trouble that loomed on the horizon for him due to Don Brennan's accusations over the fire at the factory. His mood was one of complete despondence and defeat. However help was not far away in the shape of his Uncle Fred. As Ashley moped Fred tried to persuade his young protege that things would be alright and he in fact would be the man to sort things out.

Kevin was at the garage but his mind was hardly on work, he was preoccupied with ringing Natalie Horrocks on the excuse that he had a work based itineracy to discuss with her. Something of a complete role reversal from a few weeks ago. Young Chris could see through Kevin's lust over Natalie though and kept cajoling him about it. Speaking of the phone call however Natalie was out leaving Kevin to talk to her answering machine.

Fred took a trip over to Mike Baldwin's place for a talk with him about recent developments. When Mike discovered that Ashley had been accused of such a heinous crime he hit the roof and swore he would do everything in his power to defend Ashley against the lies of Don Brennan.

Ray turned up at the Rovers prior to opening for another chat with Tricia Armstrong. She was insistent that they had no future together because of her mistakes in the past. However it would seem Ray had a few secrets of his own to explain about. He slowly told her the truth about his family life and the mistakes he had made. His wife apparently hadn't left him but it was the other way round. He had walked away from his family for another woman and their relationship had promptly crumbled a mere three months down the line. I wasn't sure if he was telling lies just to try and put him and Tricia on "equal footing" so she would be prepared to try again with him.

Ray's offer of a new life with him still stood and while it was something Jamie wanted to go for Tricia was still primarily undecided. She figured it might not work out like her previous relationships.

Mike and Fred were now down at the police station trying to plead Ashley's innocence in all matters relating to the fire. The detective they spoke to said that Ashley's stories didn't tally and until that was the case it looked like he would be charged for the arson of the factory. They would have to go away for something of a rethink if they were to help Ashley any more.

Rita turned the thumbscrews on Alec Gilroy regarding the money that he 'owed' Joyce Smedley. She was going to make sure the money was passed on to Judy Mallett as soon as possible and there would be no escaping the matter either. In fact as a result of her conversation with Alec the handover took place in the Rovers later that day. Needless to say Judy was surprised at her windfall while Alec looked merely pained to say the least.

It was nice to see Maxine in a somewhat more caring frame of mind as she comforted her boyfriend Ashley over his misfortunes. She explained how she genuinely cared for him and didn't want to see him come to any harm. Audrey meanwhile propped up the bar spreading her malicious gossip around with Fiona. She mentioned how likely it was that a gullible boy like Ashley could fall under Don's influence.

Mike enlisted his hot shot lawyer Frankie to do the honours in defending young Ashley. However it has to be said she wasn't feeling to confident as Ashley's case looked weak on account of his differing stories to the police.

Tricia decided to take Ray's offer of a new life and before we knew she was cramming her belongings into the back of his estate car and setting off for a new life. She was wished well by everyone including Sam who was off out for a night out with Sean (long time, no see) as she waved goodbye to the Rovers and more importantly her good friends Jack and Vera. AS the episode faded out we saw Vera once again shedding a tear for the thought of losing another grandchild.

Sunday 4 May 1997
Sunday episodes of Corrie always seem to have a lazy feel about them and tonight's was no exception. That's not to say it didn't have it's moments of interest. It started with Angie in jubilant form over her new business deal with Mike Baldwin. There was the odd doubting Thomas types in the shape of Bill Webster and Jim McDonald telling her to watch her back whilst being in cahoots with him. This talk proved costly because if they were so obviously Anti-Baldwin then they wouldn't want the job of refitting the print shop for the new venture.

However these two had something of an about turn when they got the chance of the job from Baldwin himself. After all they had both worked for worse people and at least they knew where they were with Mike. Yes, it was clear after a while they convinced themselves that Mike would be a gainful employer for them. Angie saw them measuring up the job and could barely contain her laughter.

Alec had been summoned to Southampton for a meeting with the head of Sunliners. He viewed this as something of a rosy opportunity and thanked Rita for her input into the matter. He was too optimistic for my liking though, this scenario could be an accident waiting to happen.

Mike continued his stint as the good samaritan arranging a meeting between Ashley and his hot shot solicitor Frankie. He went to inform Ashley at the Brennan household and told him to keep his chin up. It was proving to be hard going for Ashley who had the fear of God within him. He confessed his terror to Maxine about what would happen to him in prison in quite a touching scene.

Rita volunteered to look after Rosie for Kevin if he wanted some free time to kick back and go out with his friends for a drink. Kevin's brain started ticking over instantly. You could fair see his thoughts clicking on to Natalie as a result.

Alma had spent the day and in fact the last few weeks blissfully unaware of her husbands plans to start again with Angie in the rag trade. Her mind had been fixed upon starting a new life in the States and for once she thought she might get her own way as well. She toddled off to Jim's Cafe to see Gail who was in the midst of discussing a name change for the cafe with Roy. She was still a bit tearful but cheered up immensely when she explained the news of her imminent departure across the water.

Sean arranged a night in with Sam watching TV and enjoying a quiet meal with a bottle of wine. It was clear that Sam wasn't that keen on the idea but she went along with it for the sake of keeping the peace.

Ashley got spruced up to see Frankie and went to her office to sit down and talk about the mess he had gotten himself in. Honesty was now the best policy and shy Ashley acted up a storm as he was brutally honest about what had happened the night of the fire. His embarrassment showed as he admitted he had been clubbing alone and not spoke to anyone because of his shyness and inability to talk to women.

All in all he had dug himself into a real hole here with all the intricate twists and turns that his story had taken. Despite being the truth he looked like he was in a hole heap of trouble and the intervention of his Uncle Fred hadn't helped matters at all.

Audrey talked to Bill and Jim in the Rovers who mentioned they were doing the job for Mike's new venture. She in turned collared Alma and spilled the beans about Mike going into partnership with Angie...ooops!, Alma left the Rovers near to tears knowing her hubby had not been truthful with her and had put business before her...yet again. It was a real humiliation for her and she let Mike know how she felt in a tearful conversation with him towards the end of the episode.

Before then Mike checked in with Alma for a status report on Ashley and she confirmed what she already knew. Things were looking bleak for the lad on account of his jumbled story and the fact that nobody was there to back him up on his story (Could Maxine come forward and lie for him ?)

Alan had some news for Fiona tonight as after a hard days work he tumbled home to her flat a tad tipsy. In a fit of dodgy 'drunk' acting he revealed that he had in fact been promoted much to his and Fiona's joy.

Sam and Sean's night in ended in disaster, It was clear that Sam was clearly having a bad time as she sat on the sofa giving out the most negative body language going. Sean was still on smooth par though and when they discovered that there was nothing on TV he tried to make a move on Sam starting with a kiss. She was clearly nervous but at first she seemed willing to play along and test the water. Sean however became a little more passionate and Sam then became resistant to him. However despite her pleas he didn't stop until she forcibly threw him off her.

Pride hurt he jumped to his feet and grabbed his coat and stomped off leaving poor Sam hurt and in tears sobbing she didn't really want him there that evening anyway.

Monday 5 May 1997
The episode picked up steam somewhat tonight with the first storyline of the night coming into play involving Sean and Sam. Essentially Sean came into the Rovers looking to apologise to Sam for his behaviour the night before. When she ignored him his manner became somewhat more insistent he even tried to stop her serving a customer which attracted the attention of Jim McDonald.

Jim told Sean that he would be better of employing his energies elsewhere and to stop pestering Sam. For a moment Sean thought he might play the hard man and stood back ready to lay a punch. Jim however advised him against such a course of action and realisation dawned on Skinner that if he tried anything then he would be mincemeat.

It didn't sit well with Sam the fact that Jim had bailed her out of trouble and she had a dig at him for it. Somewhat cheesed off Jim left the pub and went home. Sam realising her abrupt behaviour against a man who was merely trying to help her ran after him and apologised and the two were friends again.

ALma was having a whinge about Mike to Gail as he had let her down again with his plans to start a new business instead of retiring to America. Meanwhile Rita was kindly offering a chance to Kevin to play babysitter while he went to the races with Kevin. At first Kevin wasn't interested in imposing on Rita but she insisted on helping him out.

Alec hit Southampton for a meeting with his old boss expecting good news. At first the meeting seemed cordial enough with the two of them exchanging old stories of life on the ocean wave and the like. In fact Alec was commended on his running of the branch in Weatherfield. In fact at this point all the signs looked very good indeed for Mr Gilroy.

It didn't end well though, Alec's summons to Southampton had bad tidings after all. The Sunliners Boss explained that it was time for Alec to call it a day as retirement time beckoned for him. To make matters worse his replacement would be Dreary of all people. Alec left Southampton and his old friend a very bitter man indeed.

The day at the races turned out to be profitable for Kevin and Chris and they returned home flush with thier winnings. Rita insisted that Kevin extend his day out and make a night of it with a meal out with Chris and Angie. What Kevin didn't know is Chris saw Natalie in the Rovers and explained they would be at a certain nightclub later on.

Ashley was just preparing to leave Don's house with Maxine in tow when there was a knock at the door. It was none other than the police who had come to arrest young Ashley for the arson of the factory. Maxine panicked and ran to the Rover's for help where Sam passed on Mike's number.

Chris and Kevin went clubbing with angie although it was clear to see that Kevin was not in the right frame of mind for it. That was until Natalie showed up and sparked his interest. Angie and Chris left the club first leaving Natalie and Kevin to go home...together.

They went back to her place and we saw them kiss and the next thing we know a shame faced Kevin was skulking back indoors at 3 a.m much to the annoyance of Rita who was disgusted as she had wanted him back for 12 so she could get up early for the papers.

Wednesday 7 May 1997
A despondent Alec slouched back into Weatherfield trying to hide his wounded pride as he entered the office for his twilight days in the employment of Sunliners. He tried to cover the truth of his impending dismissal by acting bright and breezy in front of Dreary. Unfortunately she had been contacted and offered his job the day prior. Hence Alec was forced to come clean about what had happened in Southampton but thankfully there was no hard feelings between them as a result.

Kevin was another character doing the slouching as he entered the Kabin with a peace offering for Rita in the form of a bunch of flowers. Unfortunately for Kevin he was on the receiving end of a frosty mooded Rita who was still cross at missing her sleep. Also thanks to Chris coming in later and revealing that Kevin left the club at 1 a.m as opposed to 3 a.m in passing conversation made Rita not only angry but very suspicious.

Roy and Gail had been thinking about taking someone at the cafe. Gail suggested Alma would be the ideal candidate for the job on account of her many years experience in the greasy spoon business. Roy was hesitant about letting her back into the fold but Gail's enthusiasm for the idea seemed to sweep his opinion under the carpet. Anyway he thought Alma wouldn't be interested working in the cafe again.

As it happens Alma couldn't be more in favour of the idea if she tried as she was desperate to get from under Mike's feet. The reason for this was his current preoccupation with getting Ashley off the hook for the fire at Baldwin's factory.

Maxine went to court to see Ashley in the dock only for him to be placed on remand until the case went to crown court. However things weren't going to be all bad within this little storyline thanks to the investigative work of Mike and Frankie. It would seem that one of the night club security tapes which was taken the night of the fire hadn't been erased as originally thought. Instead it was in police custody under investigation for another matter entirely. The salvation of Ashley could be right under their noses.

There was a nice surprise for Jim McDonald tonight as he was invited round to Sam's house for a meal. It was more of a case of her having a chance to say sorry for her abrupt behaviour with him a few days earlier. Poor Jim could hardly believe his luck as he stood at the bar going into shock at the prospect.

Kevin spoke to Sally on the phone and explained how much he was missing her while she took care of her mother. The conversation went on for a while with Kevin reassuring Sally he was O.K and he loved her. Only moments after putting the phone down though Natalie walked in through the door. It was a real case of cold feet for Kevin though because all he could say was the night before had effectively been a mistake and a mistake that shouldn't be repeated. As a result Natalie walked out telling Kevin she had nothing to fear as she would not come near him again.

Mike and Frankie managed to retrieve the video cassette they needed. What they needed to do now was sit down and watch the video in it's entirety and see if Ashley turned up on it. During the search Mike and Frankie made small talk when suddenly on the screen in front of them who should appear at the bar on his own but Ashley.

Jim went for his meal at Sam's house and a very odd affair it was as well. Sam seemed chatty but nervous leaving Jim little opportunity to get anything but small talk in. In fact after the meal it was a case of being politely told to leave which we saw evidence of as he came back into the Rovers complete with the bottle of wine he hadn't even had time to drink over at Sam's.

The police were dragging their heels in acknowledging Ashley's appearance on the video but you could tell by looking at the expression on the face of the Detective involved he knew when he was beat. I think this pretty much sewed up any chance of Ashley's conviction.

Friday 9 May 1997
Ashley was out and his first port of call was Maxine to reveal he was a free man. He greeted his surprised girlfriend with a big hug while Fiona smirked and left them alone for a while as she made convenient coffees.

Dreary was all fired up and ready to take over the Weatherfield Branch of Sunliners from the departing Alec Gilroy. She was looking through the holiday files and discovered that their were a few discrepancies. The most obvious one was a holiday to Las Vegas which appeared to have been paid for but not claimed.

Dreary confronted Alec about it and called his bluff, he had been secretly swindling some holiday promotions in an effort to sell some holidays through Sunliners to line his own pockets. Dreary wasn't judgmental towards the swindling Gilroy but she insisted he tie up all loose ends before she took the helm in a week or so.

Friction arose in Jim's Cafe between Roy and Gail as they discussed the new arrangements for their part time worker. Roy was digging his heels in and refusing to allow Alma back as he feared it would be a return to the cafe's old values. In essence he feared being the girls 'ganging up on him' which shocked Gail in the extreme. She thought he was being childish but insisted on being the one who broke the news to her best friend.

Kevin was preparing to close the garage early today on account of him visiting Sally as she cared for her sick mother. Chris seemed to know the score when it came to Natalie and even went as far as to joke about it. This put Kevin on edge and made him very jumpy to the point where he almost had a row with his erstwhile assistant.

In the Rovers Ashley was busily thanking Mike while Fred ensured the drink was flowing for Baldwin's benefit. Ashley spoke to Maxine who was acting rather coolly towards him now all the drama was over. It seemed almost like her attraction was toward a man in danger of being imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. Now he was simply plain old Ashley again he didn't seem to possess as much relevance to her. Fiona however was quick to remind Maxine of what the poor lad had been through and insisted that she try and make it up to him. This prompted the now famous wicked Maxine smile.

After a little stint in the Rovers with his Uncle and Mike, Ashley took himself off to the prison with the intention of seeing Don Brennan. He wanted to find out why his one time friend had so clearly turned on him and stabbed him in the back.

Don seemed pleased to see him acting as if nothing was wrong between them until Ashley questioned him about his lies. Don seemed confused and broke down in tears claiming he didn't remember any such accusations. In fact his behaviour seemed very erratic at times but whether he was trying it on for the benefit of the authorities or whether he was generally going round the bend. He began asking when Ivy of all people was coming to visit him, clearly to Ashley he was making no sense so he left.

Alec meanwhile was scheming with Jack regarding the hooky holiday he had lined up at Sunliners. He roped Jack in on a scam to raffle the holiday in the Rovers and he would take the profits while Jack would find himself the winner of 10 nights in Las Vegas. Jack foolishly enough agreed to this and the deal was set.

Alma came to visit Roy and Gail only to be greeted with the harsh news that she was not required after all. Gail was still fuming and Alma left before a full scale argument broke out between the two partners. She was already feeling pretty low after recent events and this was simply another further kick in the teeth to her.

Ashley meanwhile was confiding his worries about Don to Martin as he packed his bags and moved out of Don's house. Martin pondered whether Don was trying it on or whether he was genuinely in the wrong place.

Meanwhile Kevin was planning to leave the house for a weekend with his wife. Rosie wasn't due to be picked up till later so he was busily ironing and washing clothes for the trip. That was until Natalie came slinking in the through the back door with something of an ultimatum. Capitalising on Kevin's weakness she asked him whether they were 'on' or 'off' as it were. Kevin eventually came to the decision they were 'on' claiming he could cope with whatever guilt the situation brought with it as long as Sally never found out.

Natalie then began peeling off Kevin's top....

Sunday 11 May 1997
Another lazy Sunday episode with a lot of the attention focussing on the dodgy exploits of Alec Gilroy and his erstwhile partner in crime Jack Duckworth. The hooky Sunliners special offer was now firmly under raffle in the bar of the Rovers Return with the promise of proceeds going to a local charity.

Jack was still prone to bouts of cold feet but Alec's cool demeanour continued to reassure him that everything was O.K and that the entire scam would progress smoothly enough leaving Jack and Vera the happy couple flying to Vegas in a matter of days.

Bill and Jim were putting in plenty of overtime on the Baldwin project which was all well and good but some parties were not particularly happy at all the time that was being put into the work at hand. Namely Maureen was bored rigid by the staid and uninteresting rut they had dropped into over the last few months. Bill was not bothered about having a social life and it seemed they were spending all their nights in front of the telly plumped up on the sofa.

Martin finally convinced Gail to see sense over the feud at the cafe with Roy. He could see Roy's point of view when it came to working under his old bosses again and could see that Roy might indeed feel threatened by the working relationship that might arise. Martin told Gail that if not for Roy there would be no cafe in existence at all so she had better see that things improve or the relationship might dissolve altogether. Gail saw sense and she broke bread with Roy and peace was made.

Jim was surprised to be offered a night out by Sam following a cancellation by her friends. The venue was to be the local bowling alley where the two wold enjoy a little bit of friendly competition between themselves. Needless to say Jim looked like a man who had won the lottery as a result.

Mike was fuming as he discovered that Don Brennan had been sectioned and moved from prison to a psychiatric hospital. Alma was relived that she would not have to stand trial anymore because effectively there would be no trial now Don was unfit to plead.

The Las Vegas holiday prize was attracting undue attention from an angry Dreary who figured Alec's dodgy deals could land her in trouble when she took over her new position of Sunliners branch boss at Weatherfield. Also tireless charity worker Emily Bishop wondered how this particular charity stunt had got past her keen nose. Silver tongued Alec managed to talk himself out of trouble explaining it was a publicity stunt from Sunliners.

Ashley and Maxine were looking for some time alone and thanks to Ashley's quick thinking he had managed to retain a key to Brennan's house meaning they had a little place to go when they wanted some time together.

Bill and Maureen spent a thrilling night at the Rovers playing dominoes with Percy and Maud. Maureen was fuming because she was so tired of Bill's boring ways. She intended to change the matter though as she reckoned they would be going to a sixties night on Monday. Although as we would find out later Bill would try and avoid it.

Sam and Jim had a nice night out together at the bowling alley, they bowled and Sam lost which impressed Sam no end. She was glad Jim had played to win and not patronised her by letting her win a few games. It would seem she and Jim were matched in many respects. However come the end of the night Sam went home alone leaving Jim on the doorstep. I don't think she realised just what sort of effects she was having on McDonald and that his heart appeared to be skipping beats in her presence.

Natalie slinked into Kevin's house looking for kicks, however Kevin was not interested. He had just got home from visiting Sally and her sick mother and it looked plain that he was racked with guilt. Bill turned up asking if he could babysit for Kevin tomorrow night to avoid going out with Maureen on the sixties night. Kevin declined fearing he would be left to the tender mercies of Natalie for that evening. As Bill left Kevin and Natalie alone it was clear she was getting more and more 'clingy'.

Kevin looked worried...

Monday 12 May 1997
A rather quiet episode of the Street tonight as the things ticked over slowly enough. Alma was out to get the job of her dreams working in a posh clothes shop in Manchester. She had power dressed for the occasion and was ready for the interview that morning. Mike had a mixture of things to say about the interview. He started off wishing Alma well and saying that she would clinch the job with ease. However before long he was wondering whether Alma was up to the job after all. He asked her not to be to despondent if her effort to get the job ended in failure.

Alan turned up at the Salon with a day off on his hands and a longing to take Fiona out for the day. She was hesitant at first because she felt she had too many bookings taking up her schedule. She also felt Maxine wasn't up to the responsibility of looking after the salon on her own either. Maxine disagreed with her on the matter claiming she wanted some more responsibility to make her job more fulfilling. Fiona eventually relented and let her take on the job for the day.

Alan thinking he was on his own for the day sloped off to the Rovers and decided to prop up the bar there instead. He spied the Las Vegas offer and decided he would have a go at that. Jack seeing a police officer looking at his decidedly dodgy deal became very edgy and even tried putting Alan off buying tickets but it was no good and Alan bought two. Just then Fiona walked through the door announcing she was free for the day after all.

Natalie turned up around lunchtime to play the now familiar game of "will they or won't they" with Kevin. It had become like a regular game of cat and mouse with Kevin being so indecisive about whether he should continue his liaisons with naughty Natalie. Kevin was becoming worried that people were putting two and two together especially Chris.

Mike was in the Rovers at lunch time and was greeted by a sour looking Alma who was more under the weather than ever due to the fact that she had not got her job in the clothes shop. Coupled with the fact that Mike didn't seem that interested in what she had been doing it caused her to lose her temper and storm out.

Mike realising he had not being the master of tact in the situation decided that some form of making up was required so he went to the Sunliners office and spoke to Dreary. He came out with a holiday to Cyprus for 14 days. A lovely surprise for his wife or so he hoped.

Alma had other ideas though, she was still determined to find employ and took herself off to Firman's freezers. She applied for a job there much to the amazement of Curly Watts who viewed a checkpoint job as something beneath her usual standards. Alma insisted that this was just the opportunity she needed to get out of the house and away from the nightmarish life she had been through lately.

Bill was preparing for the night at the 60's bash although he was clearly dead set against the idea. Maureen had thrown herself into the idea full time and had dressed up for the part. Bill had thrown on a morose looking suit and stood at the Rovers looking depressed. Jim meanwhile was also at the bar clearly still debating his chances with Sam. He was smitten she obviously wasn't.

Mike discovered his wife was taking a job at Firman's and hit the roof. He couldn't understand what on earth she was planning working in a freezer shop. Alma stood by her guns though and made him prepare to cancel the dream ticket holiday they had planned so she could start work. She wasn't budging on this one.

Alan ended the episode effectively asking Fiona if he could move in with her. She had mentioned how sick and tired she was of not being able to see her fiancee for days on end.

Kevin and Natalie were once again talking and kissing and trying to decide whether to continue their affair or not. After a heavy bout of tonsil hockey which robbed Natalie of her lipstick he decided (again) that it couldn't continue.

Wednesday 14 May 1997
Something of an eventful episode tonight but starting off with Maureen complaining about Bill and the lack of attention he bestowed her the night before at the sixties dance. Maud still seemed as firmly as ever on Bill's side in the matter and said as much.

Everyone else was preparing for the draw of the raffle with the prize winner going to Las Vegas. Emily was singing Alec's praises claiming he was a kinder man than she had originally thought with his generous donation to charity. However the likes of Rita were definitely a little more cautious than to put their trust in Gilroy.

Kevin and Natalie were still playing their little game of back and forth as they still couldn't decide whether they were "on" or "off". Natalie hung around to "do the books" which made for a very cool atmosphere in the garage. Kevin tried the old "can't we be friends" routine with Natalie but she was not falling for it. In fact her general mood was a little more predatory towards Kevin tonight.

An elderly gent wandered into the Rovers with a view to buying a raffle ticket and winning himself a trip to Vegas. He rambled on a while about his life to Vera looking very much the sorry for himself sort. Vera was reluctant to sell him a ticket but the old man insisted.

At the end of the working day there had been a definite shift in mood between Kevin and Natalie as she went over to his house to "do the books" with her co-boss. Once again they were "on" again as the two of them secreted inside his home.

In the Rovers there was already an atmosphere of apprehension as potential winners of the raffle lined the bar waiting to see who would be the lucky ticket holder. It all looked very above board as the tombola was set down on the bar and Alec prepared to pick the ticket.

He reached inside the tombola and pulled out a ticket, it belonged to none other than the old man who had been talking to Vera earlier on. He was the one who would apparently be going to Vegas. He leapt out of his seat and hobbled over to the bar. However before he had even reached the bar he had fell clean to the floor and was not moving.

Jim knelt by his side and cast a worried glance as he tried to find a pulse. It would appear there was no pulse to be found leading Jim to conclude that here man was dead. The onlookers all looked shocked none more than Vera wracked with guilt as she had sold the ticket.

Someone went looking for Martin as his nursing skills would be essential right about now. While this was going on Jack knelt over the "dead" man and began trying mouth to mouth.

Meanwhile there was other business going on in the Street, Mike Baldwin had told his wife Alma he would fix it with Curly that they would be able to go on holiday without it clashing with her job. That was about to be fixed.

He tracked Curly to the Cafe where he was having his tea and told Curly he didn't think Alma was up to the job at the supermarket. In fact he told Curly to forget she ever applied. He mentioned that the stress of recent months had caused Alma to behave irrationally and taking the job was one thing she had been unwise to do. Whether Curly would play along with Mike or not remained to be seen but he clearly didn't look happy about it.

In the Rovers Martin was now pushing his way through the crowd only to be greeted with the site of Jack's "dead" man seemingly now having a pulse. In fact as Martin spoke the man began to come round and from there on he was helped to his seat. Was this some sort of miracle ?

Alec was beavering round the situation too much for my liking as they sat the man down. The elderly gent didn't want to go to hospital but instead wanted to go home. Alec strangely volunteered to run him to the place he was staying mentioning he felt responsible for what had happened. Jack was meanwhile being hailed as a hero.

Friday 16 May 1997
Jack was still thought of as the all conquering saviour of an old man's life in the Rovers tonight. Jack of course was taking it all in his stride and playing up to the image that had rapidly been lumped upon him. Little did everyone know that there was an extra agenda to Jack, Alec and the old man.

The Street's resident love rat Kevin Webster was once again being racked with remorse about his illicit affair with Natalie Horrocks. She was around at the garage again trying to woo lover boy back to her house for the night while someone babysat for him. Kevin quickly jumped up on to moralistic high ground and mentioned how wrong it was for them to be together. Unfortunately this speech has been wheeled out so often it should be indelibly tattooed on Kevin's brain cell. The end result however was just as predictable as the speech though with Kevin buckling under Natalie's "charms".

That's not to say that all this behaviour wasn't going unnoticed by people around Kevin. Chris's cheesed off appearance as he skulked around the garage betrayed the fact he was well aware of what was going on. He was unhappy because Kevin wouldn't let him out to get a haircut because of the heavy workload yet he could go and gossip with his lover, double standards, eh!. Also Rita was clearly mulling thoughts of foul play around in her head as she sat in the salon listening to Maxine and Fiona arguing about the potential of extra marital affairs in relationships.

Old man Conway the man who died and came back to life turned up early doors in the Rovers. Jack was very attentive making sure the man had a drink to start the day and that was where we saw the plan of Alec's explained in full. Conway was in fact supposed to be handing over the ticket to Vegas to Jack that day as conclusion to his little holiday scam.

It would appear Conway was in fact one of Alec's little celebrity acts, known in the trade as Lazarus, The man who comes back from the dead. He had the ability since a childhood accident to effectively hypnotise his body into a state akin to being dead. He had used this ability to his own gain a number of times over the years and under Alec's management he had become an act. Unfortunately the Gilroy touch was not a very fortunate one for most people and as many had been before him he had been ripped of by Alec many times before.

As a result he was withholding the ticket from Jack as a means of revenge against the schemes of Gilroy. Jack was mortified by this news and with Conway in tow he quickly went to see Alec at Sunliners. With Jack's assistance he managed to get a matter of recompense for Conway for all the past monies he was owed and as a result Conway happily handed over the ticket in full view of the regulars at the Rovers. The scam had shown a few touch and go moments but appeared to have worked.

Meanwhile Jim was mooning over Sam as usual, he had wanted to take her bowling. Something she had agreed to until circumstances left her in charge of the Rovers while Jack and Vera left for Vegas. Instead Jim spent his evening bringing the glasses to the bar for Sam and buying her drinks and generally making cow eyes at her across the bar. Yes folks!, Jim was smitten and it seemed that Sam hardly seemed to notice.

Meanwhile Kevin had got Bill and Maureen to babysit for Rosie while he sneaked off. Everyone thought he was going to a stag night for a friend in Oldham but in truth he was sneaking off to Natalie's house. Of course once he arrived at Natalie's and the two sat down together he began to get the old predictable feelings of guilt. Natalie reassured him though she didn't mean to split up his marriage. She insisted she was a temporary stop gap bit of fun for him with no strings attached. Kevin felt much better about this and "lad" that he was lost all his feelings of guilt straight away.

Bill's neglect of Maureen had been a paramount feature for awhile and he took the Michael tonight in a big way. Firstly he volunteered for the babysitting without consulting Maureen. Then left her cooking tea and looking after Rosie (who started being sick) while he went to the pub. It ended in a row with Maureen walking out and going home. Not before having a go at Rita though claiming it was her fault for turning down Kevin's request of a babysitter. Something she hadn't even been asked about which made her wonder about Kevin's behaviour even more....

Sunday 18 May 1997
A good solid episode tonight with the main storylines showing plenty of life as well as some of the little sub plots brewing up nicely. It all started with Kevin returning home from his illicit night of passion with Natalie. He was greeted by Bill who had not had the best of nights following his argument with Maureen who had left him due to his inattentive behaviour. When Kevin saw his father so annoyed he thought his secret was out and he could be seen to be sweating but his relief was visible when he discovered the cause of Bill's concerns.

Bill's first priority was to make amends with his girlfriend so he decided to cry off work with Jim and see about putting things right with Maureen. Thus after squaring things with a disgruntled Jim he went to the Kabin and picked up a local brochure on weekends away at Blackpool.

Sam was in charge of the Rovers Return while Jack and Vera were living it up in Las Vegas. Unfortunately that left Judy on the receiving end of Sam's new authoritarian tones. In fact that was putting it mildly as Judy was clearly peeved at being ordered around. Especially as Sam made comments about Judy's reliability at the same time.

Come opening time Angie was in the Rovers with Chris doing a spot of impromptu recruiting work for her new venture with Mike Baldwin. Her first name to call upon was the old shop floor workhorse Ida Clough. Often a thorn in Mike's side she was looking to be back in Mike and Angie's workforce as the new venture got off the ground.

Rita's suspicion however began to get the better of her tonight as she finally decided to take matters into her own hands regarding Kevin and the fling she suspected him of having with Natalie. She turned up at Natalie's house and went straight on the offensive asking Natalie to lay off Kevin for the sake of his marriage to Sally and their children. Natalie reacted angrily to the accusation and denied everything she was being accused of. Rita wasn't foolish though and wasn't swayed by Natalie's story. She threatened to take Rita to court if she spread her rumours any further.

Jim was back in the Rovers and apart from a brief conversation with Fiona regarding putting up some shelves in the flat he spent most of his time trying to attract Sam's attention. He desperately wanted to take her out for the evening but her schedule was pushed out due to her running the Rovers for Jack and Vera. Also behind the bar friction was mounting between Sam and Judy. The two of them didn't like the fact that the other was talking to either a husband or a potential partner when they should have been serving. In the back of the bar they rowed and Judy accused Sam of being a tease leading men on and not following through when she had hooked them. This left Sam looking hurt and would undoubtedly take it's toll on a potential relationship with Jim McDonald.

Curly's Sunday was to become nothing less than ridiculous as he found himself in the Corner Shop consoling a distraught Maureen as she wept buckets over the fact she might have lost Bill. Curly's kind words appeared to be working when Maureen spotted Bill approaching the shop. Fearing Curly's presence in the shop with her might be misconstrued as something other than innocent she bundled him into the back of the shop.

Bill walked in with apologies flowing forth for Maureen who stood in the shop looking mortified. He announced as way of recompense he would be taking her away for the weekend and promptly told her to get her coat. Maureen was faced with little choice but to lock up the shop leaving poor Curly in the back frantically signalling her for an escape route. Unfortunately Bill was hanging around and Maureen was forced to key in the alarm code to activate the shop alarm as well as locking the inner door to the shop. Curly was well and truly trapped and it looked like it would remain that way until Monday morning.

Still despite it's binds Curly's predicament had a few benefits as he began playing chess using a sheet of checkered cloth and a set of whisky and vodka bottles as pieces. When a piece was taken poor Curly was forced to drink another bottle.

Natalie ended the night rushing round to Kevin's explaining what had happened with her visit from Rita. Kevin seemed strangely calm as the two of them talked about what they would do next. Whatever happened though the leash was indeed getting shorter for the two of them.

Monday 19 May 1997
A lively episode showing in my opinion Corrie on good form starting with Curly Watts waking up in the back of Maureen's Mini Mart. He was stirred from his slumber by the likes of Percy Sugden wanting to come in and do some shopping. This wasn't going to happen though because Maureen and Bill were still away leaving Curly trapped.

Meanwhile Sam was starting the day in the Rovers with some real doubt about herself and her own ability to run the pub. She sought some advice from Betty Williams on how to handle the punters because Judy had made her think she was too flirty. Betty had little constructive to say except that she would do her job the way she thought fit and wouldn't alter the way she was for anyone.

Angie was on a recruitment drive for employees while Mike was away, she had 17 applicants to speak to and was already finding the pace tough going. What she disliked was the fact that she was going to have to let some applicants down because she simply couldn't employ everyone.

Bill and Maureen were on their way back from Blackpool to Weatherfield. Bill had obviously enjoyed himself but Maureen was a bag of nerves and it was quite obvious that marooning Curly in the back of the shop was the cause of the problem. Bill however was oblivious to the problem despite seeing Maureen pulling another one of her worried faces.

They arrived back in Weatherfield with Maureen desperate to open up the shop and let her captive out. She ushered Bill across to start work with Jim on the factory unit while she unlocked the shop. Quickly running into the back and letting Curly out she showered him with heartfelt apologies for his suffering over the weekend. However despite thinking she had got away with her little dilemma Maureen was about to be proved wrong.

As Curly emerged from the back of the shop who else but Bill should walk into the shop with a face looking like thunder. He immediately jumped to the conclusion that Maureen and Curly were up to no good and set about manhandling Curly out of the shop. Maureen tried to explain their innocence but Bill's suspicious mind wouldn't allow him to believe anything of the sort. It definitely looked like it was all over between them now.

Alan and Fiona were moving in together at the flat, there was much huffing and puffing as Jim and Alan started lugging items up the stairs. However before long a morose Bill came ambling along to lend a hand. After finishing the task at hand their Bill and Jim cut across to the Rovers where Bill propped up the bar in a very angry mood. Jim tried to keep his erstwhile partner cool while as always trying to attract the attention of Sam in his usual lovesick way. However today was different because following her tickiong off from Judy the day prior Sam was very much acting the cold fish with Jim. However he proved before the end of the episode that he could still take the frost of her personality when he tried.

Kevin meanwhile had a lunch time run in with his boss and sometime lover Natalie. She didn't hang around long because Kevin was undergoing one of his daily guilt trips. This left Natalie annoyed because she was getting the back up she expected from Kevin so she quickly stormed off angrily.

Meanwhile we got to see Judy in her working environment at the local arcade. There she sat in her booth handing out change to the punters but it was not without problems though. She faced the wrath of a local thug who was intent on being problematic towards her throughout the afternoon. He was being rough with the machines which he claimed weren't giving him games when he put his money in. Judy handled the situation tactfully although it was clear to see could have been treading on thin ice in that situation. She confided the events of her day to her worried husband and Ken in the Rovers that night. It seems like a prelude to a bigger story....

A worried Kevin who had been trying to track down Rita all day finally got to see her that evening round at her house. His mission was basically one to beg for mercy at Rita's feet. He didn't try and blind side her to the truth about him and Natalie . Instead he merely begged her not to say anything to Sally for the sake of his family. Rita merely told him to go home and get an early night, something he had missed out upon recently...

Wednesday 21 May 1997
The starting point and the crux of the storyline focussed on Maureen and Bill tonight. Bill especially was not in good form mainly because his temper was gaining the better of him thanks to his suspicion of Curly getting off with Maureen. Of course nothing had happened but Bill's suspicious manner didn't allow him to think clearly on the matter.

Maureen meanwhile seemed fairly O.K with the idea of them splitting up but Maud who was back from a break away from Weatherfield wanted to know what had happened in her absence. Maureen explained about Curly being locked in the stock cupboard all night and was forced to explain about how she had slept with him at Christmas. Maud was astonished and disappointed with her daughter which I think was a bit rich considering she hadn't been one of faultless virtue in her younger years.

Natalie was turning up the heat on Kevin who was increasingly starting to sweat under the pressure. She wanted to continue the relationship even though Kevin was *yet again* having more and more doubts. She inflicted pain on him by spending her lunch break with young Chris which sparked the flames of jealousy within him.

Judy was facing trouble in the Arcade, the young kids who had been causing trouble the day before were in again and this time they were out to steal money. Judy tried to fend them off but it was increasingly difficult as they outnumbered her. Luckily for her out of nowhere came her husband Gary who quickly sorted out the hooligans with a spot of physical retribution. Judy was annoyed though because she wanted to fight her own battles without Gary wading in and helping her out.

Jim had a meal with Sam tonight, he was trying to win her over with his Ulster Fry up meal. The two of them spoke mainly about Jim's past life with Liz and the boys. The subject then moved on to relationships with Sam's guard coming up nicely as a result. Jim asked out right if there was any chance of a relationship but Sam blew him out nicely without hurting him too much.

Bill had the day to calm down and get his hard feelings toward Maureen out of his system. The two of them faced off in the shop and had a chance to speak to each other and patch things up with each other. This was all down to Ken's talking sense to Bill telling him to take a more sensible approach to things. Anyway after a chat Bill and Maureen were back on as a couple again.

Bill wasn't finished with the matter though and he decided that he would go and stake his claim to Maureen by telling Curly to keep his hands off. He went round to Curly's house and began playing the modern day Tarzan telling Curly to stay away from Maureen. Curly began getting mouthy in response to Bill's belligerence and as a result he got a smack in the mouth and the episode ended with Curly laying on the floor. I think insinuating Maureen was easy wasn't the wisest of moves.

Friday 23 May 1997
The ongoing are they or aren't they saga of Kevin and Natalie continued tonight with Kevin deciding that they were most definitely on again. Natalie convinced Kevin not to go to visit his wife in Scarborough and instead spend the weekend with him. Kevin whose nature seemed to have taken a turn for the darker side was in full agreement to doing this. All this unpleasant behaviour was going on despite a stern lecture about making mistakes in life from none other than Rita.

Curly was nursing some bruises today following his run in with Bill Webster. Sam of course quizzed him about what had happened even though it was a subject Curly wasn't too keen to talk about. He eventually explained how Bill had hit him because of his altercation with Maureen at Christmas.

The young thug who went by the name of Liam who had previously given the Mallett such grief at the arcade turned up again today. While Gary was working on the roads around Weatherfield the young thug became abusive. Gary fixed him with a very cold look but the scene promptly cut away from them. There would be repercussions later though....

Speaking of repercussions an innocent comment from Sam to Maureen about Bill's handy way with his fists caused trouble for Bill. When Maureen discovered what Bill had done to Curly she promptly collared him in her shop and explained to him tearfully they had no future together. Bill begged her to reconsider but it was all over in her eyes.

The young thug Liam turned up at the arcade looking like he had took a nasty beating. On speaking to Judy he claimed it was at the hands of Gary Mallett and threatened to tell the police if she didn't hand over £200. Judy fronted him out but you could tell she was worried about the consequences.

Bill was walking round all afternoon like a bear with a sore head, Jim explained to Fiona whose shelves he was fitting that all his and Bill's problems were related to women. In fact the scene was becoming something of a common occurence with Fiona and Jim being very "buddy buddy" with each other. Fiona reassured Jim that he was still an attractive man even if Sam wasn't interested in a relationship.

Rita was arranging a night in with friends in an effort to battle the old enemy loneliness. She had invited Ken and Mavis round for a bite to eat as well as some drinks. Both invited parties were looking forward to the event all day.

Kevin's conscience finally got the better of him tonight and after a day of being decided on visiting his bit on the side Natalie he had a last minute change of heart and decided he would go and visit Sally after all. Natalie discovered he was going to see his wife at the last minute and her blood virtually boiled at the prospect. She vowed she would not be there for him when he got back and swore they were finished.

Meanwhile Judy confronted Gary in the Rovers about the truth of whether he had beaten up the thug Liam or not. Gary initially denied but Judy claimed she knew him of old. Gary still denied doing anything wrong but you couldn't help noticing the look in his eye, was he lying ?

Sunday 25 May 1997
A strong episode tonight with Judy Mallett showing some signs of doubt when it came to the innocence of her husband Gary. Had he beaten up the arcade thug Liam or was his accusation all lies. Either way he wanted £200 for his silence otherwise he was going to the police to cause trouble.

Jim called Liz round to inform her it would only be a week on Monday until young Steve got out of the big house. His prison term was ending thus giving the McDonalds something to look forward to. Liz pried a little on the subject of Jim and Sam. She almost seemed delighted when he announced they were just friends. It was a tough time for Jim because he was clearly pining for her more than Sam was for him.

Emily mentioned to Alec she had not received any money from the Vegas raffle and she and the hospital organisation were waiting patiently for the proceeds. The likes of Ken and Rita were sure Alec was up to no good and the money would not arrive. However Alec shocked us all by producing an envelope containing the cheque. What the amount would be anybody's guess.

Poor Curly was on the receiving end of a hatchet job from Maud Grimes tonight. She virtually despised him for "breaking up" the relationship between Bill and her daughter. Curly tried to fathom what she was on about in the Rovers and Maud opened her mouth about their Christmas liaison in front of the customers. She didn't say anything out right but left little to the imagination.

Natalie wasted no time in Kevin's absence to get to know Chris a little better over a drink in the Rovers. She flirted openly with him but he didn't seem interested in her. He was more interested in recruiting models for Angie's new underwear range.

In fact that was Angie's mission as well, however she failed miserably on most counts. Fiona refused and apparently Maxine possessed too little in the curves department. Sam point blank refused and although he was helping her recruit Chris turned shy at the moment of truth. Chris eventually ended up ready for photo duty when Sam claimed she would do the honours if he peeled of his clothing as well.

Judy went against her husbands wishes and took £150 savings from her house to give to the young thug at the arcade. He was unhappy with what he had received and threatened to go to the police anyway. Judy panicked and promised the money that evening. In order to raise the money she asked Judy if she could be subbed £50 ion her wages. She claimed the electricity bill had been allowed to run overdue on it's payment date and needed money fast. Sam declined saying it wasn't her place to advance wages to staff in Jack and Vera's absence. As a result Judy was given an extension of 48 hours to get the money when the thug found she could not pay up.

Curly blew his stack with Maureen in the shop now that his good name had been slurred up and down the Street, In fact he was hurtful with his verbal assault on Maureen claiming there liaisons had never been the "love making" she had thought they were. It was merely just sex and nothing more, Maureen was also horrified to know that Maud had opened her big mouth in front of customers.

Hence she went to the Rovers and sat drinking with her friends Liz and Dreary. She was hitting the red wine with a vengeance and it looked clear she wanted to escape the unpleasantness that seemed determined to move her way.

Monday 26 May 1997
The episode hinged upon the stressed out Judy Mallett and her woes with the arcade thug and the money she was supposedly "owing" him. Gary was still oblivious to the fact that she had handed over their savings in an effort to silence the thug.

She had paid £150 out already but still owed another £100, times were hard and every avenue she looked along didn't provide her with the answer she was looking for money wise. That is when foolishness kicked in and Judy nearly made a very foolish mistake. She was working in the Rovers and the till was open, for the briefest of moments it looked like she might do the dishonest thing and steal the money she needed but she backed off at the last moment. However she was witnessed by Sam who quickly bustled her into the back of the pub.

Sam grilled her about what the problem was and why she had nearly been so foolish. Judy admitted there was indeed a problem and explained to Sam everything that happened at the arcade. Sam reckoned she might be better of going to the police and explaining to them what had happened. It could however be a little late for that.

Ther other storyline in the show tonight was Emily needing some ticket receipts from Alec to confirm the takings from the raffle. This caused trouble for Alec because the raffle was done on an essentially dishonest basis. He rudely left Emily and Rita in the pub at dinner time leaving Rita to ponder just how much money he had really made on the raffle.

Rita went to see Alec and put a little pressure on him to do the decent thing and hand over all the money he had made from the raffle or else. Alec didn't like having to be so honest but he was going to have to do it otherwise face the consequence.

Angie was displaying her fashion pants all over the Rovers and getting everyone geared up for the fashion shoot. Chris still looked nervous about the prospect though.

Kevin was back from Scarborough and his first port of call was the garage, Natalie was over there fixing up a computer on the premises. She was clearly still interested in Kevin but he was showing amazing amounts of resistance to her.

Alec sneakily arranged for an envelope containing the receipts and money from the raffle to be hidden in the Rovers just so he could collect it and give it to Emily. Thus Emily ended up with £750 for the hospital funds while Alec was left with nothing for all his troubles. Rita of course was left with a broad smile on her face as she watched her old sparring partner get egg on his face.

Judy confessed to Gary she had given in to the thugs wishes and handed over some money. She now wanted to go to the police and sort the matter out. Gary reckoned that was going to be next to impossible now she had paid out some money. He reckoned he would be able to sort out the boy without any trouble.

Wednesday 28 May 1997
Two storylines got the focus tonight starting off with Angie and her fashion shoot for her new underwear range. Chris was nervously sat in the Rovers following a hard days work at the garage waiting for Angie to arrive. Also present was Sam so the stage was set for the two of them to visit the studio where they would peel off and let the camera do the talking.

It all started in good humour with Chris shyly stood around refusing to remove his dressing gown for fear of peels of laughter from all around him. However when Sam walked into the room dressed in one of Angie's lengerie designs Chris had a quick rethink of the situation and decided to hang around.

The photographer was a very animated chap who managed to get the best out of the camera shy pair and before long they were lapping up the attention as they posed for shot after shot. As time went on confidence increased and Sam and Chris began to look increasingly good together. The photographer encouraged them to pose a little more intimately together and this is where the problem started.

Angie began to fair bristle with jealousy as she watched her flat mate caressing the local barmaid at the Rovers. She tried to laugh it off but her tone gave her away whenever she opened her mouth.

Meanwhile Gary spent most of the day at the Arcade playing knight in shining armour to his wife Judy. They were waiting for the thug Liam to turn up and pester for more money. To Gary's disappointment the boy didn't show and eventually Judy convinced him to go home and do something more constructive with his time.

Meanwhile there was a little bit of friction between Jim and Bill tonight as Jim tested the water for the future of his son Steve. He asked Bill how he would feel about Steve joining the business. The answer from Bill was a flat no, he didn't reckon he could cope with an ex con joining the team. These were words which caused no end of offence to Jim and he walked out of the pub. However by the end of the episode Bill would have something of a rethink and allow Steve on the job as a trial.

Back at the arcade the girl came back to pester Judy for the rest of the money she was supposedly owed. Without her boyfriend to back her up though she was hardly as much of an imposing figure as she was prior. Judy manhandled her out of the arcade and told her to get her drug money elsewhere.

The girl was offended to be called a junkie and we discovered that she and Liam the thug had a reason for wanting such a large sum of cash. The girl was five months pregnant and wanted the money to have a termination. This was like a body blow to Judy who had been trying for a child unsuccessfully with Gary for some time now. Judy clearly upset forced the girl of the premises.

Liz's new job was at a swanky looking venue and as a way of celebration she invited Maureen and Dreary to enjoy something of a girl's night out while she worked the bar. What Liz neglected to mention was that the evening was in fact a singles night. Discovering this shocked Dreary and Maureen but they decided to hang around for the sake of it anyway. However things looked bleak when in walked Fred Elliott, he clapped eyes on the ladies he knew though and nearly fell through the floor.

When he had composed himself enough to speak to them he explained he had come across the place they were drinking by pure chance and he was not aware that it was a single's night. There was plenty of knowing stares thought from Liz and Maureen at his expense.

It was Dreary who would get the catch of the night though, while Maureen got drunk and chatted with Fred. Liz and Dreary propped up the bar and eyed up the menfolk around them. Dreary clapped eyes on bloke and decided he was a bit tasty. However being something of a repressed sort she didn't make any moves until Liz blurted out to the chap that Dreary fancied him.

He came over and made small talk and in passing conversation he revealed he was a commercial short haul/long haul pilot. Dreary was impressed by all this and could be seen melting in his presence. Before long though the night was over and the pilot was off to his room. Leaving Dreary frothing at the mouth...when would she see him again ?

Back at their house Chris and Angie were reflecting on the fruits of the day's labours. Any mention of Sam's name caused sparks of jealousy in Angie's eyes. Chris though had been informed earlier by Sam that Angie was in fact crazy about him. Apparently she could tell this just by observing her drooling over Weatherfield's Boy Wonder. Chris then explained that if Angie wanted they really could be an item, Angie's response was to lean over to Chris and kiss him.

The night ended on a sour note for the Malletts as Judy explained what the young girl had needed the money to do. Gary was angered by learning this and blamed Judy for the 'killing of a baby'. Poor Judy could merely sit there taking the 'blame' for what had happened.

Friday 30 May 1997
The day began with something of a shy and nervous atmosphere between Angie and Chris following their night of passion together following the photo shoot in the previous episode. Chris it would seem was more sure of what their liaison meant to him than Angie was to her.

The Mallett household was one of dour mood as well as Gary and Judy continued trying to get their heads round the young girl and the abortion she was planning with their money. Gary wasn't concerned with the money more a case of it disagreeing with his own personal ethics on the matter especially as he desperately wanted to become a father so badly.

Dreary's day was brightened considerably by the arrival of the her pilot friend from the previous night out. He had come to chance his arm and ask Dreary for a date. She was flabbergasted to see this handsome chap in uniform again and readily agreed. In fact she was so impressed she called a meeting in the Rovers with Liz and Maureen and told them.

Speaking of Maureen, Fred was hanging around her like a bee around a honey pot. Of course his intentions were good and if truth be told Maureen had enjoyed his company the previous night. By the end of the episode they too would be ready to go on a date as well.

Natalie coolly breezed into the garage and tried keeping contact with Kevin to a bare minimum. However despite the shop talk she had a confession to make as she left. She told Kevin that what had started as an innocent flirtation had developed further and she was in love with him. Kevin continued to shrug her off though because Sally was coming back tonight.

Or so he thought, A phone call from Sally revealed that she would in fact be staying on in Scarborough a few days longer thanks to her mother's whingeing behaviour. Sally apologised profusely but it was clear this had knocked Kevin's morale off a little.

In the Rovers, Kevin and Curly talked about how their lives would be easier without women. They jokingly formed a no women society and decided they would shun the opposite sex. As Gary would later point out though Ken could afford to do that as he had already "not shunned" most of the Street's women, nudge nudge wink wink...

In fact Curly ended up talking to a morose Gary about how he had met Judy, we found out little about that situation though because all Gary could say on the subject was how he knew she was the one for him. Curly then declined Gary's offers of assistance in getting himself a woman. Mainly because every girl Gary suggested Curly had been intimate with.

Angie ended the day with Chris not sure where to take their relationship next. He thought it was full steam but she was clearly taking things slowly and thus with a pang of regret she sent him to bed alone...

Kevin meanwhile still disappointed in Sally not returning home called Natalie and it looked like he was about to rekindle the flames of their passion....
