Monday 1 May

Written by Ellen Taylor Directed by Duncan Foster

Rob waits in the loft of a lovely stone cottage out in the countryside while Tracy makes breakfast for a listless and bored Amy, with nothing to do because Tracy didn't pack her mobile and iPad (accidentally on purpose, I would think). Amy hears a creak overhead. Tracy won't let her go check it out with her and sends Amy outside, promising to make a fire. Amy is highly skeptical that her mother has that ability but Tracy shoos her out.

There's a slow song playing on the radio, something that almost sounds like something you'd find in a music box. Bethany comes into the kitchen where Nathan is, looking rather emotionally bruised. She's quiet and he asks if she's feeling ok. She thinks he's angry because she slept with Neal but Nathan thanks her for keeping Neal sweet, telling her that Neal even said Nathan didn't have to pay him back, thanks to Bethany. He tells her he will have to go out later and she can stay in the salon with Mel to keep things ticking over. She clearly wants to talk about it but he won't hear it, leaving her confused.

Tracy has come up to the loft to get Rob away from the window and caution him to be quieter. He's not happy that Amy is with them but Tracy couldn't leave her behind. They argue. Tracy promises to find the right time to tell Amy about Rob. Rob doesn't know what his mate Tiggsy is going to say when he finds out there's a kid along for the ride. Rob tells her he has to leave the cottage to get a phone signal so Tracy says she'll take Amy into the village. Rob insists Amy be told the truth. Tracy hears Amy come back in and leaves.

Sophie is helping with the washing up while Rosie dries her freshly painted nails. Sophie doesn't see the point since they'll be chipped by teatime but Rosie? She feels in control when her nails are done. Sally is amused that two sisters can be so different. Rosie takes that opportunity to ask when Sally had last heard from Gina. Sally confesses it's been years, a family wedding where Gina got very drunk. Tim heads out to the cab office though Sally teases him about hardly working. Sally goes upstairs. Sophie wonders if Leah was lying after all and they should go talk to her.

Daniel asks Roy about Ken's health. Roy reports that Ken roundly thrashed him at chess which is a pretty good indication that he's feeling better. Daniel promises to pop in later and see him. Billy and Todd are at a table. Todd is only picking at his breakfast. Billy seems to be assuming that he will be taking on Summer, a godfather's duty though Todd is still on the fence with doubt. Billy thinks it could be just what God had planned for he and Todd though Todd doesn't look so sure.

Michelle, hair still wet from the shower, and Robert head down the street to work. She's moaning that he doesn't have a hair dryer and apparently Maria broke hers so he offers to buy her a new one. She remarks that she has to get the rest of her stuff at the pub some time, might as well be today. Robert realizes Steve would have received the divorce papers by now and won't be happy. Tough, declares Michelle.

Sarah and Gary wheel the baby and pass Robert and Michelle. Sarah is checking her phone in case Bethany texts and dingle dingle, it's a text from Bethany wanting to come visit. Gary warns Sarah not to put any pressure on her daughter. Be cool. Gary kisses Sarah and heads to the building site.

Adam, newly released from jail it seems, watches Gary and Sarah and then turns away. In the background, we see Luke get out of a black cab with his luggage (He'd been to see Steph in Portugal). Adam calls to him and asks if he's seen Tracy as she's not answering the door. Luke reckons she sleeps pretty soundly. Adam warns Luke that the police might want to ask him about the false alibi. Uh oh.

Bethany comes through the salon and tells Mel she's going out for about an hour. Mel insists she tell where she's going so Bethany confesses she's going to see her mother and baby brother and lies that Nathan knows. Mel knows that's not true and warns her that Nathan will go mad. She begs Mel to cover for her, even to lie and say she went to the chemist. She says that after what happened the night before, she needs to see them. Mel agrees to cover.

Fiz needs some people to practice her massage techniques on and is trying to persuade Roy who is getting tense just thinking about the prospect. Not for him, I guess. Sinead comes in. Fiz blanks her and says she might ask Chesney and then leaves. Ken comes into the cafe and greets Sinead kindly. Adam arrives next. Ken is surprised to see him but Adam, angry, lights into his grandfather for believing he could attack him. Ken insists he just doesn't know what to believe but Adam is hurt that he had no faith. Adam insists Tracy is the one that's lying and asks where she is. He discovers that Tracy has taken Amy out for a few days. Roy steps in and asks Adam to leave. Firmly. Adam points out that it's strange that Tracy suddenly disappears. Why would that be, he wonders. Sinead looks thoughtful as does Ken. But then he always does.

After the break, Bethany has arrived home. Gary is there (lunch break?) and takes Harry to the door to let her in. Bethany picks Harry up so Gary can get back to work. Sarah has made salad and is really happy to see her daughter. She plays it cool.

Tim has taken Sally to the Bistro for lunch. They order something and Tim gets up to go to the gents', leaving Sally on her own at the table. Tim overhears Michelle and Robert talking about finding a new cab firm for their deliveries. They let Steve go because they found him unreliable. Tim offers to take over. No dice. Robert sticks to his decision and Michelle decides that the busy lunch hour is exactly the time she needs to desert the ship and go get her things. Robert allows it as she can do no wrong. Sinead comes in to tell Daniel she's seen Adam and that Adam was trying to put the blame on Tracy. Daniel is perturbed that Ken would be upset. News given, Sinead leaves before Robert can scold Daniel further for stopping a minute.

In the pub, Luke chats to Steve about his holiday. Seems Steph is dating a bloke with a yacht. Steve suggests that breaking up with Tracy was for the best but Luke admits he misses her. Michelle arrives. Steve says he signed the papers. She thanks him and tells him why she's there. She goes through to the back leaving a sad ex husband. Adam comes in next, gagging for a pint. He asks Steve about Tracy's whereabouts but Steve isn't giving it up, telling Adam they are planning to be back tonight. Adam thinks they've done a runner after lying to the police. Steve and Luke both think Tracy would never put Amy in harm's way. Adam muses that Tracy must be good "in the sack" for both of them to have the wool pulled over their eyes. They say nothing. There's a cry from the nearby baby monitor (so Steve must have Oliver for the day).

Rob peeks out of the door of the cottage, phone in hand and gets a signal. He calls Tiggsy and admits the situation. Tiggsy isn't happy but Rob threatens to drop him in it if he gets caught. Tiggsy has apparently asked him to wait 24 hours for something, probably to see if he can rearrange things. Rob heads back into the house but the door has locked behind him and he's locked out.

Michelle comes into the back room to find Oliver in Steve's arms and it takes her up short. She backs out quickly, hurt, while Steve comforts the grumbling baby.

Nathan has returned to the salon. Mel is honest and says Bethany has gone to see her mother and pretends to kind of have believed her when she'd said he was ok with it.

Bethany is making small talk with Sarah about Nathan working on a bank holiday. Sarah is keeping the questions light but notices that Bethany hasn't really eaten. Bethany allows Sarah a little worry that she might have been on the diet pills again, assuring her mum that she'd only had a big cooked breakfast and isn't hungry. You can tell Bethany is on the verge of telling her mother something but the baby monitor squeaks with Harry's cry and the moment is lost.

Sophie and Rosie are at Leah and Gina's. Rosie doesn't think it's such a good idea to confront them, after all, Gina was a nasty troll and maybe she's violent. Sophie points out that confronting the troll was Rosie's idea in the first place, and knocks on the door and then the window. There doesn't seem to be anyone home but Gina comes up behind them and recognizes them with a big smile right away.

Todd looks deep in thought. Billy comes in the pub, apologizing for being late. Todd takes a deep breath and confesses. He's not ready to be a parent. He doesn't want them to look after Summer. Billy's face falls and quizzes Todd, he thought Todd was ok with it. Todd points out that what they said was that they'd talk about it but Billy has gone ahead and assumed the outcome. Todd apologizes but repeats he's not ready. Billy realizes he might have to choose.

Rosie and Sophie go inside with Gina. The house is a mess, and looks kind of grubby with curtains falling down and the nets looking distinctly on the gray side. Gina worries, she thinks maybe Sally's cancer has come back. She's reassured. Rosie confronts her with the vicious tweets, the heart, a nasty phone call. Gina has no idea what they're talking about.

Bethany hears Harry grizzling and looks a bit shell shocked. She gets a text from Mel who says she told Nathan where Bethany was. Now she looks a bit scared. Panicked. And grabs her coat. Sarah comes downstairs with Harry and is told that Mel needs help in the shop. Bethany has a quick cuddle with Harry and gets tearful. Sarah tries to find out what's wrong but Bethany makes out she misses Harry. Sarah tells her to come anytime, even bring Nathan. Harry is handed back and Bethany leaves. Sarah breaks down next, I think she can see her daughter isn't happy. Outside, Bethany stands for a minute collecting herself and then walks away.

Rob manages to climb in through a window but the landlady has come in with a fruit basket and sees him. I think she thinks he's breaking in. Rob scrambles to try to assure the woman that he's Tracy's husband come to surprise her but the landlady is on the phone to the police. Rob describes Tracy and Amy. The landlady has no intention of believing him.

What's going to happen now? Stay tuned.

Tvor

As we rejoin the Street the landlady is still on the phone to the police. Rob pleads with her not to believe him by giving her information about Tracy and Amy. Tracy doesn't know he is there, he has come as a surprise. The landlady then tells the police that she will ring back as it maybe a false alarm!

Gina is still denying that she is sending anything to Sally. She confronts her step-daughter.

Billy talks to Drew and explains that isn't able to take in Summer. Billy says they can't make the commitment. Drew is surprised that Billy and Todd are together for the long-term. Billy says that outside of being her guardian, he will do everything to protect her. Drew breaks down and is in tears and upset.

Bethany is sitting on the bench outside the Rovers, and receives a call from Nathan, but doesn't accept it. Mary spots her from across the road.

Steve is talking to Adam and questions why Tracy would run away.

Leah, Gina's step-daughter convinces her that she is responsible for threatening Sally and it is something to do with the medication that she is taking that makes her forgetful.

Rob tells Tracy that he is worried that the police won't believe the landlady after she started to make the phone call. Tracy says it is okay, because she spoke to them and confirmed everything was okay. Rob is annoyed that Tracy has not told Amy about him. Rob then asks Tracy about her Luke and Robert. She says she has never loved either of them more than him.

Michelle and Maria have an argument after Michelle picks up a list of complaints that Maria had wrote about them living together.

Bethany is in the flower shop chatting to Mary and then sees Nathan outside. She goes around to the back of the shop. He rings again, and she rejects the call again. Then Nathan walks in, and is 'surprised' to find Bethany in there. He takes her away.

Tracy suggests to Amy that they stay a couple more days at the cottage. Amy asks about school and Tracy says that she will call to say that she is sick. Amy says that would be illegal. Tracy then broaches the subject of Rob. Amy says she didn't like him. She much preferred Robert and Luke.

Nathan and Bethany come back into his flat. As they walk in he is chatting to Neil on the phone. She is concerned that he maybe upset about the previous night. He assures her that he is not. He wants to know what her mother had to say. Bethany says he mother is cool about her living there. He then accuses her of hiding from him.

Michelle reads out Maria's note to Robert and hints that she may like to move in with him. A little embarrassed at first, but then Robert thinks it is a good idea.

Maria, Sarah and Todd are chatting in the Rovers. Todd is concerned that he may have to split from Billy. He is concerned that he would be living with his mother and Billy living somewhere else with a kid. Billy then comes in and says that he has told Drew that he can't take on Summer. Todd is impressed that he told Drew that he can't take Summer.

Steve and Ken are chatting about Adam. They don't go along with Adam's assertion that Tracy has taken Amy on-the-run. Steve wishes they would answer their phones. Ken believes that Tracy should be home by now.

Rob and Tracy have a talk. Rob is concerned about what Tracy may say when she finds out that he is there. Tracy says the she will tell her Dad that they have extended the holiday. Rob asks what she will say next day, or next week. She thinks the quicker they move out the better.

Bethany and Nathan are talking but she is still upset. She is concerned that he is upset with her. He says that he is okay but doesn't want her running off to her mum or gossiping in a flower shop because it makes him feel insecure. He says she looks upset and stressed. He tells her to go to bed, and he will sleep on the sofa. She is still concerned and Nathan realises her vulnerability and rubs in how childish she has become by suggesting he will buy her toys for her birthday present.

We leave the Street with a very tearful and clearly upset Bethany.

Wednesday 3 May

Bethany comes out of the bedroom in her dressing gown to find Nathan, fully dressed in the kitchen. He's cool and sarcastic, telling her that if she can't cope with a proper relationship she should run home to mummy. Mel comes in then, and noticing the bedding on the sofa, asks if they've had a domestic. Bethany says no, but Nathan says yes. Then he goes off in a strop, telling Mel to talk to her, saying she might get more sense out of Bethany than he can.

Ken is in the pub, talking to Liz and Steve. He's worried because he thought Tracy and Amy would be home yesterday. Steve thinks they've probably run out of petrol somewhere. Just then Steve's phone rings, but it's not Tracy or Amy as they all hope, but the school, wondering where Amy is. Steve mumbles something about them being delayed.

Eva and Aidan are in the cafe. Eva is looking at wedding dresses in glossy magazines, and shows one to Aidan who is clearly not interested. She shows it to Sean who comes over and asks if they've set a date yet. Of course they haven't, but Eva lives in hope.

Just then David comes in to order a sandwich. Aidan wanders over and asks, ever so casually, if he's still seeing Maria. David points out that he works with her, so he can't really avoid her, but Aidan wants to know if they're still together. David wonders why he asking – has he taken a shine to her? Aidan scoffs that he's got Eva....and wanders away, leaving David grinning.

Sarah and Gary are eating in the cafe and talking about Bethany's relationship with Nathan. Sarah realises there's not much she can do, so she's going to back off and let her get on with it.

Adam comes into the pub, he's found Amy's and Tracy's phones in Ken's house, which explains why no one has been able to get hold of them. Ken is really puzzled, Tracy would never go out without her phone. Adam says he's looked in drawers and cupboards and their passports aren't there. Steve says Amy's passport is out the back, so he goes off to find it, but comes back a few minutes later without it, it's gone! Adam thinks they should call the police, but Ken accuses him of being too quick to point the finger, but Adam is sure it was Tracy who attacked Ken.

Tracy meanwhile, is talking to Rob outside of the cottage. She's worried about him going off to meet Tiggsy, but he says it's all set up now, and promises to be back in a hour.

Mel is talking to Bethany and asks what's wrong. Bethany says she can't believe Nathan is being so cool about the fact that she 'did it' with Neal. Mel tells her that men think differently about sex, it's no big deal to them. She says if Nathan is cool with it, then she should be.

Maria and Robert are helping Michelle move all her stuff out of Maria's flat and into Robert's. They run into Leanne who is pushing the baby in the pram. She points out that it's Nick's day off and wonders why Robert has left the Bistro to run itself. Robert says he's only going to be out a few minutes, and Michelle reminds him that he's the boss and does not have to justify himself to Leanne.

Steve and Adam are talking to the policewoman. She tells Steve that Amy hasn't been kidnapped, she's with her mother. Steve tells her the passports are missing, they could be on their way to Timbuktu by now. Adam tells her that it was Tracy who hurt Ken, and must have realised he would work it out eventually. The detective tells them she's made a note of their concerns and will get someone to make enquiries.

Bethany has got herself dressed and done her hair. Mel tells her that Nathan has a 'male ego' thing going on, he likes it when other men fancy Bethany, it makes her more desirable to him. She then shows Bethany an engagement ring, saying that Nathan was planning to take her somewhere posh and propose. Bethany is amazed, and then thinks she's ruined everything. Mel is sure she'll win him back.

Leanne is in the Bistro and tells Robert she's sorry if she was off before, she was just a bit shocked. She is surprised though, Michelle has only just finished one relationship and here she is walking into another. Michelle overhears this, and stops in her tracks. Robert tells Leanne it's not really her business, but Leanne says she doesn't want to see him get hurt as Michelle is obviously on the rebound. Robert points out that Leanne did exactly the same thing with Nick, one minute he was marrying Carla and then next minute he was with her. Leanne mutters that she and Nick have history, and Robert counters that by saying that he and Michelle have actually been through some tough times together, and in fact Michelle was very low at one point. Michelle then rushes forward and asks for a word with Robert and takes him into the kitchen. She tells Robert that what happened on the bridge was between the two of them and she doesn't want him telling anyone. He assures her that he hasn't and he wouldn't. He doesn't want anyone thinking badly of her and he hugs her.

Bethany is alone in the flat when Nathan comes back. She says she's sorry, she's been an idiot and really immature. He throws the ring box at her, telling her Mel said she'd shown her. She says she can't keep it now. He reminds her of the state she was in a Christmas, his heart went out to her and he just wanted to take care of her, but if their relationship has run it's course he will accept it and move on. She protests that she loves him, but he piles on the guilt and says she ran away from him. Bethany says she was just confused.

Steve gets back to the pub and tells Liz the police aren't going to do anything. However, just then a photo of Amy and Tracy comes up on a news programme on the tv with requests for information about their whereabouts.

Rob is in a cafe with Tiggsy. He's found someone who will help them, but he's not happy about having Amy along and it will put the price up. Rob reminds him that he saved Tiggsy's life in prison, he just wants him to get them all out of the country. Then he looks up and sees photos of Amy and Tracy come up on the cafe's tv.

David tells Maria how he saw Aidan in the cafe, he's sure Aidan still fancies her, but he fancies himself even more. David is sure he's jealous as he thinks he and Maria are going out. Maria seems pleased at this, and David asks if she's planning on a rematch with Aidan. She tells him she's not, he's a liar and cheat and they're finished for good.

The police tell Steve and Ken about Rob Donovan escaping from the crashed prison van. They think that Tracy is involved with him again. They don't want to draw attention to Rob's disappearance, so they're using Tracy and Amy as a front. Steve is aghast that Tracy could be so stupid, but the detective wonders if she had a good reason to want to disappear herself.

Eva and Aidan are still in the cafe when he gets a message on his phone. He tells Eva it's just the restaurant calling about a business lunch tomorrow. She grins and tells him to wait and see what she's wearing. Then she gets back onto the subject of wedding dresses and pulls two out two more pictures that she's torn from magazines and shows them to him. Aidan gets cross with her then, and says she's getting ahead of herself, she's obsessed, she's being pathetic. She gets huffy then and tells him to have a think about what he wants, it's obviously not her. She gets up and walks out.

Back in the flat, Nathan tells Bethany he can be a bit paranoid at times with people he really cares about. He says he was going to get married once, but was jilted at the altar, and now he always expects everyone to leave him, and sooner or later they do. Bethany swallows all this, hook, line and sinker and promises never to leave her. "Will you do anything for me?" he asks, and she replies that of course she will. Then he gets down on one knee and asks if she'll marry him.

Back in the cottage, Tracy is staring out of the window, looking worried. Amy is playing snakes and ladders and tells Tracy it's her turn. She then starts moaning that it's too quiet, she can't stand it, and has no phone or iPad. She goes out to the kitchen, asking Tracy to turn the tv on, but when Tracy does she's shocked to see photos of herself and Amy being broadcast, so she turns it off quickly.

Gary is looking up Bethany's social media page, and gets a shock. He then shows it to Sarah who is devastated to see that she's engaged!

Friday 5 May

We begin this episode with a very very chilly start in Eva and Aidan's flat. They're talking through the cat ("Boo, will you please tell...") Aidan tells Eva he'll be back here to pick her up later but she's refusing to go with him to his impress-the-clients meal.

Steve's in the back room of the pub looking glum.

Audrey tries to cheer up Sarah by suggesting Bethany will opt for a long engagement and then the relationship might fizzle out.

Beside a lake a long way away, Tracy looks out of a window and weeps.

In the tanning salon, Bethany tries to find out how much her engagement ring cost. Mel says she needs him to look at some paperwork and they send Bethany off to fetch coffee. When she's gone, Mel says the ring is a decent one. Nathan tells her not to worry. It'll be on some other kid's finger before long.

Eva's in the salon when Aidan comes in. He still wants her to come with him because it will be all couples. David suggests he could always take Maria. Eva reckons that's that sorted and goes but Maria thinks it's a terrible idea. Aidan goes out and Maria starts laying into David demanding to know why he did that. He points out that Aidan wants to take someone who will make him look good, but that doesn't mean she has to make him look good.

Steve's still looking at his phone when Michelle comes in. He says he's waiting for Detective McKinnon to call. Michelle says she thought he might need some company. Michelle doesn't understand why the police are involved. She asks if they think Tracy's hurt Amy. Steve says he's not supposed to tell her but he tells her anyway that Rob Donovan is involved.

Amy asks Tracy A: Whether she can go for a walk; and B: why is she crying? Tracy tells her to go away. "I's just me and you now." Amy says she hates it here and wants to go home. They shout at each other and Amy leaves the house.

Sarah asks if Audrey can look after Harry while she goes to see Bethany. Audrey reminds her, "Softly, softly."

David sees a client to the door and smirks as he sees Maria, all dressed up and going off with Aidan.

In the tanning salon, Sarah asks Bethany if she can see the ring. Bethany is very surprised. She says she didn't expect Sarah to be so cool about it. Sarah says it would have been nice to have been told directly about the engagement. Bethany offers her a brew and says Mel and Nathan are out so she's sort-of the boss. She asks Sarah if this means they have her blessing. "Acceptance would be closer to the mark," says Sarah.

Maria entertains the clients with stores and jokes about Aidan. She has introduced herself as Eva, his girlfriend, much to Aidan's surprise. She's hilarious. She does Eva's flappy-hands thing and has the laugh absolutely right. When one of the wives asks about the thing round her ankle she proudly puts her foot on the table to show off her tag. She says she had a bit of a thing with shoplifting but she's going straight now. Aidan's fuming.

In the tanning salon, Sarah watches Bethany deal professionally with customers and is very impressed. She has to get back and they hug goodbye, which makes Bethany get all emotional. Sarah asks to be kept up with any future announcements. But as soon as she's gone, two of Nathan's friends come in.

Tracy's stopped moping over Rob and is out shouting "Amy! Amy!" when Rob arrives back. He says he was delayed coming back because his contact wanted more money for Amy being included in the escape plan He tells Tracy she doesn't want to know how he got the money. He tells her their faces are all over the news and she has to go back to Weatherfield with Amy.

Maria's being less than flattering about the new product lines. Aidan's furious and takes her aside to ask what she thinks she's doing. "Pretending to be Eva," she says, showing off the laugh. They argue and Maria tells him she'll make her own way home.

Amy's in a village phone box talking to Steve. She's not impressed by country life. She barely acknowledges Steve's questions about where they are, saying Tracy's all depressed and crying. "OMG" Steve panics but it's just that her money is running out.

Steve puts down the phone and tells the detectives he doesn't think Rob's with Tracy and Amy.

Maria has to get home before seven, or else her tag will turn into a pumpkin or something, but she can't find a cab company with a car available in time. And now she's run out of credit. She looks back at the restaurant and starts walking in the opposite direction.

Tracy tries to convince Rob they can all leave together once Amy is back but he has to give her a reality check. It's finished. "You need to go home. Tell them you never laid eyes on me. You know I'm right about this." Tracy appears to give in and kisses him - just in time for Amy to come along and catch them at it "What's HE doing here?"

The End
Margaret Carr

Good evening. Hard to believe another week has passed already. This is episode 9158. It was written by Martin Allen. The director was Duncan Foster. The copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Steve is reporting the phone call from Amy to Ken and Liz. Steve breaks the news to Ken that Tracy is taking responsibility for attempting to murder Ken.

At the cottage Amy is telling Tracy that she does not want killer Rob anywhere near her. (Has she forgotten that her mother might also be a murderer?). Tracy explains Rob's escape story. She admits that Rob was in Weatherfield. Tracy tries to explain that it was better for Amy not to know - hence alleging there was a squirrel upstairs. Rob is going to go and Tracy and Amy can return home. And they must not tell anyone they have seen Rob. Tracy assures Amy that Rob would not hurt her.

Bethany is pouring drinks for Neil and his friend, Ian. Nathan arrives. They bizarrely discuss global warming! Ian is hoping things will hot up (he is not referring to the weather). The happy couple are toasted once Bethany delivers drinks all round. Neil reveals that Ian wants to be invited to the next party. Nathan asks Bethany if Ian is good looking enough for the party. Bethany reckons he can attend. They all smile at each other.

Maria is wearing trousers which stop at mid calf so everyone can see her "tag". She is marching towards home when Aidan pulls up alongside her in his Mustang. That will make her Mustang Maria. (Pity Aidan is not with Sally ... we know a song about that don't we boys and girls?). After some arguing she accepts his offer of a lift because it is nearly curfew time and the alternative is returning to jail and Aidan looking after Liam.

In the Bistro Yasmeen pops in to remind Zeedan that it is Friday and Dev would like his money. Zeedan promises to sort it. Also in the Bistro (I think) are Beth, Kirk and Craig. Today Craig will be putting on his uniform for the first time. He is going out there to do his first shift at night (which to me sounds crazy) with his mentor who will be looking after him. Craig leaves to get ready and Beth is struggling to see her son as all grown up. Kirk assures her he will be fine (so no doubt Craig will be locking up Rob within minutes).

Robert and Michelle are discussing a new menu and Zeedan makes a few brunch suggestions which he offers to trial instead of finishing his shift and paying Dev. Zeedan offers scrambled eggs with chili and cumin or fish steak and coriander or pomegranate fritters with saffron yoghurt dip.

Amy is still being strident. And reveals that she has phoned Steve. And then in the distance we can hear sirens wailing. She only did it because she was so bored. The police are coming. Rob grabs his bags. They all rush outside and Tracy forces Amy into the back of the car. She then tells Rob to get Amy home safely and then he can go on the run. She tells him she is going to say she attacked Ken. (In which case why was Steve telling Ken this at the start of the episode. Continuity shot to pieces yet again). Rob says that she didn't (and he can only know this if he did the pushing - case solved). Rob says that Tracy will go back to prison - but she is protecting Amy. Again Tracy tells Rob to get Amy home safely. They kiss again and then Rob drives off with Amy, who is unable to open the child locked doors or even a window! Tracy stands in the middle of the lane as the police cars head up the hill. Derbyshire police are obviously underworked as they have deployed machine gun wielding police, who force Tracy to lay down in the mud. I wish that such over dramatic presentation of our police was not like this. There was no reason to believe that anyone was armed. A plain clothes officer approaches as she is cuffed and she denies she has seen Rob Donovan and that she put Amy on a bus back home and takes responsibility for the attempted murder. She is formally arrested.

Back on the Street Maria gets out of Aidan's car and makes a complete mess of unlocking the door. Aidan helps and she rushes upstairs making it before the clock ticked over to 7! The two exchange comments about their earlier argument and his speeding to get her back home in time. Maria is very relieved that she is not going back to prison. And AIdan keeps getting closer and then kisses her. And she kisses him back as she lies back on the sofa.

After the break Zeedan is working on the new menu items and is hoping that if he impresses Robert he will get a promotion. Yasmeen and Rana both praise the food. Zeedan is driven by the need to pay off Dev as soon as he can as he is sick of being broke. Rana calls him sexy when he is ambitious.

Aidan is helping Maria get dressed. Five months after it was undying love - at Christmas. Aidan apologises saying this was his fault. She tells him to stop going on. (We all know it takes two to tango). Maria says she is not going to beg Aidan to leave Eva. She knows there is no point. Maria is surprised that Aidan has not proposed. He says he is not ready. And he does not know what he is going to do. She says he just wants a bit of fun - he denies it. Maria says that she may as well accept it. She accepts that they will do things Aidan's way. He asks "An affair?". She says it is better than nothing. She says she has no choice. And she will not tell Eva. He struggles to get his head round it. So it would appear they have a deal. And they kiss to seal the deal.

Meanwhile over in the Rovers Eva is telling Sean that she has had enough of Aidan. David comes in and asks for a bottle of lager. Eva wanted to talk about wedding dresses - Sean points out she is not engaged yet. Aidan's response was similarly unenthusiastic. She did not go to the business lunch. She went shopping instead. David suggests that Eva dumps Aidan and she gives him both barrels in response as Sean stands behind Eva and mimes cutting his throat to get David to shut up as the latter implies that Aidan does not look the faithful sort. Eva tells David that her Aidan is worth ten of David. And she needs to head home to get his tea on. David does not get it as Eva goes out.

Robert and Michelle are testing Zeedan's experiments and they like them. Robert agrees to trial some of them. Zeedan asks if a promotion is possible as a result. He is making creative input. But Robert says there is more to it than that - particularly proving that he is an asset over a period of time. (Which to be fair to Zeedan I think he has done). But no promotion at the moment. Zeedan is deflated.

Back in the Rovers Kirk and Beth are having a drink when Craig comes in wearing his police uniform. Beth wants a twirl but Craig is not playing along. (I reckon he will make a great policeman). Craig has already heard that Bethany is engaged. David starts winding Beth up saying that Craig will need a gun out on those wild west estates in the dark. Sean tells David to behave.

Zeedan returns home - they liked it but no promotion. Needs to do his time. Rana and Yasmeen try to jolly him up - but it has no effect.

Aidan returns to his flat. Eva appears wearing, well not much to be honest. She makes him a drink and then apologises for being mardy over the last few days. She should have gone to the lunch not striding off like a stroppy cow. She kisses him. She has got his favourite in for dinner and looking down at herself she has his favourite for afters as she flips back her top to display even more of her assets. Perhaps he wants his pudding first?

Steve will let the caller know when Amy arrives home. He ends the call and tells Ken and Liz that Tracy has admitted it and has been arrested. Neither believe it. Ken cannot believe that Tracy did it. Liz cannot either - but at least it is all over now. Ken is worried about the impact on Amy. This will never be over as long as he lives.

At a police station Tracy's handcuffs are removed and she enters a cell and the door is closed. A long long shot of Tracy as she looks into the abyss ahead.

Roll credits.

I fear that Rob will not be with us much longer. Which is a pity. I know Tina had to leave - but perhaps there was a wrong turn in having Rob kill her. For Tracy there will never be anyone else as good and dodgy forensic evidence is unlikely to free Rob quickly. Although they never found the murder weapon did they?

I assume Rob pushed Ken, but I still think Eccles was involved in an accident.

And do women really settle to be a mistress as Maria has done? Answers with your address to me please.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Monday 8 May

Written by Ella Greenhill Directed by Jordan Hogg

Rob and Amy didn't get very far. The car's broken down!

Steve is frantic and has all the cab drivers looking out for Amy. Liz tries to assure him it'll be ok. He's angry at Tracy for leaving her (they don't know about Rob yet) on her own on a bus and decides to go look for her himself even though the police have advised him to stay put.

Michelle sees Steve get in the cab. She's worried about Amy, too. Robert tells her Amy would be found.

Mary doesn't know whether to open the shop or not. Norris advises that she should and reminds her that it isn't the first time Tracy's crossed paths with the police. Mary plays the loyalty card. She's determined to support her friend. Norris apologizes and Mary goes off like a trooper.

Maria looks up towards Aidan's flat with a smirk. Upstairs, Aidan's phone bleeps with Maria's message which makes him smile. Eva comes out in her dressing gown. It's clear they've already been a bit busy this morning. She thinks that's what has put the smile on his face. They kiss. She picks up his phone which has buzzed in a message from Johnny to say he'll be late to work.

Tracy is being questioned about Ken's assault and is telling them it was an accident but she doesn't seem to have all the details, like his head trauma. She has no explanation for that. Tracy is distracted and worried about Amy but they continue to ask her about Luke lying for her. She tells them her argument with her father was about him not loving she and Amy as much as his blood family. Another detective arrives and tells them that Amy is still not home. He wonders if Amy is with Rob Donovan. No, no, she insists. The detective, who is the one in charge of Rob's case, thinks it would have been pretty stupid to leave Amy with a man who is running from some very nasty people who could catch up with them before the police do. Tracy's face goes white. I don't think she thought of that. But she keeps to her story. She hasn't seen Rob.

Ken is upset that Tracy abandoned Amy. Audrey concurs but Adam takes the know it all stance. Luke comes in just then and asks if there is news about Amy. Ken snarls and Adam is rude. Audrey tells them all how manipulative Tracy is, defending Luke. Ken tells Adam off for being smug and Luke is sure Amy will be fine. Adam takes offense but Ken shouts at them for bickering. Amy is the only thing that matters.

In the salon, David wants to know how the business lunch with Aidan went. She brushes it off. Sally comes in to determine when her hair appointment is. Audrey arrives and expresses concern for Sally, asking how she's been coping with those "gremlins". David laughs and corrects her. Trolls, Gran. Sally appreciates the concern anyway. She's more interested in the gossip and Audrey tells them that Tracy confessed to attacking Ken and Amy is missing. Maria is still reluctant to talk about the business lunch when David tries to change the subject.

Out on the lonely road on the moors, Rob is still head first into the engine of the car. Amy gets out to see how much longer it will be. He can't take it to a garage because he might get recognized. She asks a question, Is he sorry for what he did to Tina. This drains all the irritation out of him and he gives her a very honest answer. "Every day" Satisfied, she asks if they can just call Tracy to come pick them up. Amy thinks her mother is only stalling the police so Rob can get away. He's avoiding telling her the real deal and refuses to call. She finally realizes the truth. Tracy has been arrested for harbouring Rob. She refuses to get back in the car until he tells her so he does, but says it's for attacking Ken. She pivots and storms off down the road.

There's an ice cream van on the street. Sean must be getting cones for the factory girls because his hands are full of tall swirly ice creams. Eva can't decide and thinks it's ok to have the calories after burning so many off earlier. Sean and David, who's also in line, grimace. Too Much Information. Over to the side of the road, Rana is comforting Zeedan who's complaining that he's not getting any chance of advancement at the Bistro. Sean and Eva walk by talking about the van. Rana looks towards it thoughtfully.

The Webster girls are washing the windows of Number 9 when Leah rocks up looking for Gina who's apparently gone missing. She'd been upset about trolling Sally and wanted to find Sally and make it right. Rosie doesn't want Sally to know the troll was her sister, she's finally feeling better and the news will set her back. She's determined to find Auntie Gina before Gina finds Sally.

Rob comes lurching after Amy. He tells Amy she doesn't have to lie to him, he knows what it's like to do something stupid. Maybe he thinks that's why she asked him about Tina. Anyway, he tells her Tracy has taken the blame for her daughter and Amy realizes that they both think she assaulted her grandfather. Rob knows from her reaction that she didn't do it after all.

Liz takes a call from Tracy who's calling to talk to Steve. She is told that Steve is out looking for Amy. Liz tears a strip off Tracy for stooping lower and lower. Tracy is tearful and asks that Liz tell Ken she's sorry and tells her it was an accident. Liz plays the Deirdre card and tells Tracy that she's glad Deirdre hasn't lived to see what her daughter has become. She hands up on Tracy and leaves her in tears.

Amy is back in the car with Rob who tells her Tracy won't go to prison because she didn't do it. Amy wants Rob to do something to help Tracy to pay her back for helping him. He can't, he just can't, he has people after him. That doesn't mean anything to Rob. She calls him a loser and a coward and a psycho. He hands her a handful of cash, and it doesn't look like it's a lot and tells her to do one.

The three women have looked around the neighbourhood but Gina is not in the vicinity. The Websters go off with Leah angry that Rosie was the one that told Gina about the trolling in the first place which upset her enough to go off. Rosie decides they all need to take deep cleansing breaths to calm down. Sophie takes the two of them off for a coffee and as they go, Gina comes around the corner behind them.

Robert asks Michelle if she's up for a wine tasting on Friday. She looks like something's wrong about Friday but tells him she's not interested. He can see something's off. Over at a table, Ken and Liz tells Adam that Tracy was charged. Liz mentions talking to Tracy and that she said she was sorry. She even admits that Tracy sounded sincere but since she knows Tracy, she doesn't believe that was the case. Ken only wants to know why. Liz recalls Tracy said it was an argument and Adam assumes it was over the will. Ken contradicts them both, he changed his will and took Tracy out so he could give her an inheritance now to buy the florist shop, which would then allow Peter to buy the pub. If she'd been angry at Ken about the will and confronted him, he'd have told her what he was doing so there'd be no need to be upset. He just can't remember any more about that night.

Aidan and Maria are snogging in the ginnel. They make plans to meet the next day. Aidan leaves first and Maria a few minutes later but David has seen both of them leave.

Gina is out in front of Underworld when Aidan comes back. She asks if Sally works there, she's rambling a bit. Aidan says she does and offers to get her but Gina doesn't want Sally to be bothered. She stands there waiting while Aidan goes inside.

Luke and Mary talk about Tracy in the Kabin. Both agree that Tracy does love her daughter. Mary says Tracy is a troubled soul. After Luke leaves, Norris calls her over. He's got a stack of magazines and suggests they do some competitions like they used to do. He's trying to cheer her up. She thinks it's a thoughtful gesture. We can hear a car horn outside. Norris goes out to see what it is and runs into Sean who tells Norris he won't be home for tea because he's got to work.

The noise is coming from a clapped out old food van. Rana is behind the wheel and is blaring the horn trying to get Zeedan's attention. He does come outside eventually with Yasmeen. She promises it's in working order. She proposes they start a business called Speed Dhal and sell Pakistani street food out of it. She got the van from a patient who wanted rid. Yasmeen approves and Zeedan is pleased.

Gina is still waiting outside the factory. Leah spots her and drags her across the road to the car just as Sally comes out. sally is alarmed to see a strange woman hauling her sister away. Gina calls out to say she's sorry. Leah speeds around the corner, leaving Sally confused and worried.

Rob is now somewhere urban, no Amy in the vehicle but Tiggsy is with him. Tiggsy is telling Rob there's another boat that night. His last chance. Rob looks deep in thought.

Audrey is shocked at Tracy's actions. Maria finishes up putting a facial pack on a woman laying on a treatment table. David mentions that he's seen Eva earlier and she as bragging about her romantic relationship. David keeps pushing and finally tells her he saw she and Aidan sneaking out of the ginnel. She admits it's back on, just. David warns her that Eva will figure it out and she should end the affair. Maria admits she loves him and feels terrible for what she's doing to Eva. But Maria's solution is that she and Eva aren't friends anymore, rather than doing the right thing and breaking off with Aidan.

Amy is hitchhiking on a country road. A car slows down and a man offers her a ride as the credits roll.

That was a close call for Amy. She was just about to get in the car with a lascivious looking man, complete with a tongue licking his lips when Rob showed up. Honestly, you'd think Amy would have more sense.

Liz has brought Ken home. He seems a bit shaky. He's there to get some things for Tracy. Liz is furious and insists that Tracy's guilty and she's confessed which she wouldn't do if she was innocent. They're both concerned for Amy as well. None of it makes sense to Ken who needs to get to the truth. He notices that Deirdre's photo is gone and that Tracy must have it. He knows family does mean a lot to Tracy and he intends on going to court for her hearing. Liz insists on going with him.

Sally is still concerned that she can't get through to Gina. The girls are trying to put her off going to the police but Sally is sure Gina was trying to tell her something before "that girl" came along. She didn't know who that young woman was, either (so it really has been a long time since Sally actually saw Gina). Sophie suggests that Gina was drinking and the woman was looking after her. Yeah. Maybe. Sally seems to be putting it aside for the moment. Probably against her better judgement.

At the bar, people are asking about Amy. Maria comes in, giving Eva a funny look behind her back. Eva thanks her for going to the business do with Aidan. Maria admits it was kind of fun and since some of them thought she was Eva, Maria admits she pretended to be, even emulating some of Eva's mannerisms like her giggle. She proceeds to demonstrate. Everyone is stunned.

Norris is bringing his competition magazines with Mary who is going to support Tracy even if it's just a brief hearing. Yasmeen comes in and hears the conversation and is looking forward to Tracy being banged up even if it isn't for the responsibility of Kal's death. She's not very complimentary as you can imagine and Ken comes out of the Roy's flat into the cafe and overhears. He kind of freaks out and decides he's not going to court after all and goes back upstairs.

Back in the pub, Eva has taken the impersonation well and everyone is laughing. Maria leaves, miffed that she hasn't offended Eva yet. The rest of the factory bees are laughing and trying to impersonate each other with not a lot of success.

In court, Mary and Norris leaf through the magazines. Yasmeen gazes at a photo of Kal in her wallet when Liz, Daniel and Adam come in just as Tracy is brought out. She whispers Where's Amy but Liz shrugs her answer. The hearing begins with Tracy's details being confirmed and she's asked whether she's pleading guilty or not. Tracy hollers out that she's put her daughter in danger which has Liz on her feet, trying to charge Tracy in the dock. Just then the courtroom door opens and Rob bursts in, and he urges Tracy not to confess to something she hasn't done. Tracy asks him where Amy is. After the break, he tells her that Amy's at home and is innocent, just like she is. Tracy is clearly relieved and tells the judge she's retracting her confession as the security finally burst through the door Rob had been struggling to hold shut while he said his piece. He tells the court that he and Tracy were together in the shop when Ken was hurt and CCTV will prove it. He's taken away. Mary smiles when Tracy retracts. Yasmeen sighs deeply and sadly.

In the cafe, Rosie assures Sophie things would be ok. Sophie's worried about Gina's condition. Eva comes in to get her order. Sophie asks her how Sally is and is told that Sally went to the dentist for an emergency crown fix. But Sally comes in and has to pretend to be still frozen. The girls know she's faking. Sally had gone to find Gina but the address she had was old and Gina had moved already and not told Sally where she'd gone. Sally doesn't like not being able to contact her.

Maria sees Eva going past with the box of cakes including a cream horn that is extra because Sean is off. Maria declines the offer of the cream horn and proceeds to slag off Leanne in defense of Michelle. This does have the result of offending Eva thoroughly and Maria gets the cream horn in her face for her troubles.

Steve returns from looking for Amy and takes a call but Amy comes outside just as he's being told she's home. She gets a big hug from her dad.

Rob explains what happened after he escaped to the male detective that was handling his case. He said he'd come to Coronation Street to get Carla's help, not knowing she'd left. He saw Tracy and Luke and contacted her in the florist when she and Luke went separate ways. They were in the florist for 20 minutes and she let him stay there overnight. The DI asked why he came to court knowing he'd get caught. He answers that he realized Tracy turned herself in and wasn't guilty and realized she'd done it to spare Amy who also wasn't guilty. He couldn't let her go down for something she didn't do. He's told he'll be moved to Humberside and put in solitary for safety. In another interview room, Tracy's questioning is a bit more roughshod as the female DI is giving her a hard time about confessing and changing her plea when "Sir Galahad" rides in. Tracy is cocky with her and doesn't tell her why she confessed, doesn't feel the need now she's got an alibi even if she's charged with perverting the course of justice. She even shows DI Mackinnon the photo they'd printed from the CCTV as evidence. She wants to go but the police aren't ready to let her out yet.

Steve is talking to Amy about the whole mess. Amy tells him that Tracy thought she'd hurt Ken because she knew Amy was angry with him. She assures her dad she didn't know Rob would be there. Amy is defending her mother no matter what Steve says and insists her father not tell anyone the whole truth.

Ken is baffled as to why Tracy confessed in the first place. Liz has come to tell him what happened. She tells him Amy is fine and with Steve. But if Tracy didn't do it, who did, Ken wonders.

In the factory, the girls are still taking the mick out of each other. Fiz does a good imitation of Sally who's lost in thought over Gina. They have a discussion over using the word "lavvy" vs "lavatory" and you can guess which one Sally prefers. Over in the kitchenette, Eva has told Aidan what Maria was saying about Leanne. Aidan is surprised Maria would say things like that. Eva realizes Maria was deliberately trying to hurt her. Aidan comforts her with a hug.

David returns to the salon after going to the bank. Maria is still cleaning the cream out of her hair. She admits she slagged Leanne off. David chuckles. Maria delusionally says Eva and Aidan aren't right for one another. That's a typical "other woman" statement, isn't it? David calls it wishful thinking and hopes he's worth losing a friend for.

Tracy is still waiting in the cell when Rob's detective brings Rob in to see her. 10 minutes. He tells her he'll be heading to solitary confinement. She asks why he came and he assures her he only did it to stop her being sent away for something she didn't do. He tells her that Amy told him she didn't hurt Ken and he believed her. He couldn't let Amy go to the police, he wanted to spare her all the questions and family doubts. No kid deserves that. He assures her he'll be fine. And with that, they exchange meaningful looks and with the 7 minutes remaining, it looks like they're going to make the most of it.

Wednesday 10 May

Leanne gets up to find Nick rocking the baby round the kitchen, he's apparently been awake for a few hours. Nick's annoyed because Steve hasn't turned up at the right time to collect little Oliver, and says he's going to have words, but Leanne manages to persuade him to go back to bed.

Ken sees Billy in the street and tells him he's going to see Tracy later, something he's not really looking forward to.

Shona takes the little dog David back to David, saying she found him outside her house, she's worried he'll get run over one day. As she walks off, Billy arrives and tells David there's a bring and buy sale on later, to raise money for a new play park. He sure Lily (who is standing beside David) would like to make some cakes to sell. David tries to say they have other plans, but Lily says she wants to bake cakes. "Thanks Vicar," mutters David.

Mary and Norris are in the Kabin, but when he goes out to put the kettle on, Sean comes in. At the same time a competition question is read out on the radio, and Mary knows the answer. She's been trying to phone in and get a chance at it. The question is – what goes up and down but never moves. Sean is puzzled, but Mary tells him it's easy – stairs! She picks up the phone to see if she can get on, she'd like to win the prize, a weekend in the lakes, for Norris, he's been so supportive of her lately she'd like to give him a nice break.

Leanne pushes the pram into the Bistro and tells Robert she thinks he treated Zeedan very badly, taking his ideas but not giving him any credit or reward. Just then Nick comes out from the back and wants to know why the baby isn't with Steve. Leanne tells him that Steve's got a lot going on right now with Amy, so she told him he can collect the baby later.

Alya comes into the factory and tells them all that nothing happened at court, Tracy got off scott free once again. Eva thinks it's creepy to think that Rob was around but none of them knew. Jenny then starts talking about Gina, and asks Sally if she's still fluttering her eyelashes at Kevin. Sally tells them all she has no idea why Gina was there yesterday, and then doesn't want to talk about it any more.

Leanne is still in the Bistro, sitting with the baby when Yasmeen comes in. They start talking about the court case – Yasmeen was hoping for a victory, but the slipperiest woman in Weatherfield lived to fight another day.

Sally goes into the taxi office and tells Tim she needs to find Gina. She's got someone at the council to check the electoral register and now she has an address, and she wants him to come with her.

Michelle goes into the pub to check that Amy is ok. Just then Nick marches in and has a go at Steve for leaving Oliver with Leanne. Steve tells him Leanne said it was fine, but Nick interrupts him and tells him it's not fine and that he needs to start putting Oliver first. Then he tells him that now he can forget having him later, Nick wants to get him back in his routine.

Tim and Sally have arrived at Gina's house and they knock on the door. Gina opens it, and is surprised to see Sally. She instantly starts saying she's sorry and she didn't mean it. "Sorry for what?" asks Sally, puzzled.

They're all sitting in Gina's front room, and Sally asks what Gina was going to apologise for. Gina brushes it aside, saying it was nothing. Sally then asks if she can have a look round. "Why?" asks Gina, "so you can see how bad it is, because it is bad, but it's only temporary." When Sally has wandered out of the room, Tim tells Gina that Sally has been having a tough time lately, and also was worried about Gina, she's felt guilty at losing touch, but he thinks it will do her good to have her sister around a bit more. Just then Leah walks in and sees Sally. "What is she doing here?" she demands to know. "I could ask the same about you," says Sally.

Back in the Bistro, Yasmeen says that if things had been different, Oliver could have been her grandson. Leanne tells her if ever she wants to talk, she's not far away. As Yasmeen leaves, Nick comes in and tells Leanne he's had a word with Steve. Leanne is cross, and says he had no right, she'd told him what she'd already agreed with Steve. Nick points out that Oliver is his son too.

Sally is talking to Gina and Leah. Gina says her husband is in Qatar but will come back when he's earned lots of money and get them out of the house, but Leah doesn't think so, especially as Gina has been diagnosed as bi-polar. Sally is shocked that Gina hadn't told her, but Gina says Sally seems to be so busy with her councilor work and everything. Sally goes over to her sister and says she feels she's really let her down, but she's going to make things better, she wants them to come and live with her until they find somewhere better. Leah is scornful, they can't afford any more rent and they're not a priority for the council. "You will be if you're homeless," says Sally and gets up, takes off one boot, and smashes the large window. They all stare, open mouthed, in stunned silence. Sally then tells them to ring the landlord and say that the property is unsafe and needs fixing and in the meantime she wants them to stay with her.

Ken is visiting Tracy, who is pleased that Amy is home. He tells her she has some explaining to do, he wants the truth.

Mary and Norris are still in the Kabin, listening to the competition on the radio. The next caller just happens to be Sean fromWeatherfield, who, of course, gets the right answer! Mary is furious. "That low-down, knicker stitching cheat!"

Tracy is explaining to Ken that she thought Amy had hurt him so she had to do something to save her. He wonders why she would think that Amy could do that. She says her head was in a mess, she wasn't thinking straight. Ken admits that it all started with him, interfering in everybody's lives. He hopes they let her go home soon. She says she will still be in trouble for perverting the course of justice. He says that once she's home, he'll use the money he's freed up from his will to set her up properly in the shop, and then Peter can buy the pub. Tracy is amazed, but he says it was always his plan, he just never got round to telling her. He says he thinks he did try.......memories are starting to come back.

Sally takes Gina and Leah back to her house, much to the surprise of Sophie and Rosie. When Sally and Tim have gone off upstairs to make up the beds, Gina tells the girls that maybe her being there will make Sally feel better, Tim has told her that Sally's been having a tough time. "Yes, Auntie Gina, because of you!" snaps Sophie.

David, with Lily and Max arrive at the community centre with a tray of cakes. David wants to go straight back home, but the kids want to stay, so Billy suggests David takes the cakes over to Shona and gives her a hand. Just then all the factory workers arrive, and are pleased to see the sale going well. Just then Norris and Mary arrive, seeking out Sean, who Norris calls Weatherfield's own Judas Iscariot, and Mary says is 'lower than a snake's belly'. Mary tells Sean she heard him on the radio and he should be ashamed of himself, but it seems that Sean was trying to win it for Norris, just as Mary had been.

The cakes on David and Shona's stall are selling fast. She remarks that he had been about to rush off as well. He says he's a busy man with a family to look after, it's all right for her, she has no responsibilities. She gets cross then. "What do you know about my life?" she snaps, "you know nothing about me!" He tries to say he was only joking, but she storms off.

Maria is in the office at the factory, with Aidan. He tells her her plan worked, Eva is very upset with her and has banned him from speaking to her. Maria tells him the whole thing is a mess and they should stop, Eva will be watching him like a hawk now. It seems he's got himself another phone, and says they can't stop seeing each other.

Leanne is still cross with Nick for stopping Oliver going to Steve. She points out that they could have had a good night's sleep and a bit of time to themselves. She moans about him picking a fight with Steve at every opportunity. Then he retorts that he's doing pretty well considering. It's not easy living under the shadow of her exes on the Street, Steve, Peter and also Kal, who isn't even alive! Leanne stares at him for a moment. "Right now I don't even want to be in the same room as you, let alone think about marrying you!" she says, and walks out of the room.

Anne Logan

Friday 12 May

We start off in Leanne's flat where Toyah's paying attention to baby Oliver and Leanne's talking about the rash he's got. Leanne suggests Toyah take the baby out for a walk, saying it might be a conversation started so Toyah can tell Peter about the embryo transfer. Nick comes in and, surprisingly, he's told Steve he can have the baby for the day so he can make things up to Leanne by taking her out.

At Sally's, Gina's drying up the dishes. Sophie and Rosie are looking up potential jobs for Gina as far away as possible - a biscuit factory in Preston is one suggestion. But Sally's got a better idea. Since Kate left, Underworld is one short in the packing department. The girls are horrified but Sally tells Gina she'll feel much safer if she's got someone to walk to work with. How many paces is it to the factory door?

Phelan and Eileen are in the cafe looking at the Road Code. Anna's glaring at them so much Shona asks if Anna wants her to spit in Phelan's cup of tea before she takes it over. Eileen goes out and Fay comes in and tells Anna she come in to get a butty for her lunch. Really, she's come in to see Phelan. It seems Seb has been involved in some sort of fight and Fay is desperate to go and see how he is. She says she's been told the other bloke came off much worse and has been rushed to hospital - it was Clayton, who killed Kylie. Phelan refuses to take Fay. Behind them, Shona overhears the conversation and stops in her tracks. She takes off her apron and heads out. When Anna turns around from making Fay's sandwich she finds both Fay and Shona have vanished.

Amy finds her mum in the kitchen and proves she has a temper just like Tracy's. But Tracy just asks her for a hug and assures her she had nothing at all to do with Ken's injuries.

Shona's on the street corner on her phone trying to find out more about Clayton's injuries. She's very angry and is apparently not getting much information. She says she wants to know "because he's my son, too!" During this conversation we get a good view down Victoria Street past the community centre to Victoria Court and beyond, showing just how much bigger the new set is.

We see Michelle and Robert walking along Victoria Street. Michelle tells him she doesn't feel up to going to work today after a sleepless night. You can tell Robert's slightly annoyed but he tells her they'll cope. As they go their separate ways, Robert gets a text, presumably from Nick also saying he won't be at work. Now Robert's even more annoyed.

Michelle sees Steve, Liz and the baby outside the Rovers. Steve's putting Olly into the car and talking about going to the beach. Liz tells Steve she's found some of the medicine Oliver had last time he had this rash.

Aidan and David are both in the Kabin. David's getting the magazines for the salon and Rita tells him there are some good vouchers which he and Maria ought to remove before the customers get to them. David says he'll do it. "Being sneaky doesn't come naturally to Maria." Hah! Aidan knows different. Phelan comes in and says he thought David would be celebrating and tells him Clayton's in a bad way in hospital. "Good. I hope he dies," says David.

Anna's so busy she has to ask Kevin to help a bit in the cafe. Toyah's there and Sinead comes in. Sinead goes to move Toyah's carrier bag on the table and sees a pregnancy test inside. Toyah snatches it back and Sinead promises her she won't say anything.

David's in the Rovers already several sheets to the wind when Michelle comes in and demands that Liz tell her where Steve is. "Has he taken Olly B to the beach?" Liz insists she doesn't know which beach they've gone to. Michelle reveals that the B in "Olly B" stands for Plan B, the back-up baby.

Robert's in a temper in the bistro so Daniel and Kate keep out of his way. Michelle comes in. She's brought what she remembers of Betty's Hotpot recipe and thinks the bistro should start selling it. Robert refuses.

Maria goes to the Rovers to find David and tell him he's had at least one client walk out and the others waiting are annoyed. She sees the state he's in and realises she'll have to cancel his clients for the rest of the day.

Toyah offers to buy Sinead a drink. Sinead says she doesn't have to because she's not going to say anything. Sinead admits she has been pregnant though she tells Toyah she had an abortion. Toyah realises Sinead isn't very happy about this and was pressured by someone.

Steve gives Olly another dose of his rash medication.

Back in the bistro, Daniel's thumping customers' orders down on the tables. Sinead comes in and tells him they never talk any more and they never deal with things, Michelle's testing her hotpot version on Kate and Robert tells her to stop. He says she's pushing the hotpot for the wrong reasons. "It's not about the business, it's about Steve." Michelle snaps at him, telling him he's not a mind reader.

Daniel tells Sinead she's right and he suggests they still consider moving away. He suggests Oxford and thinks they should go down there for a week and scope it out. Sinead hugs him.

Rita's helping out in the cafe, clearing tables and Aidan's waiting at the counter. He sees Maria and they exchange a few teasing comments about her being on her own in the salon. Gina, Sally and the girls are at a table. Sally sees Aidan and goes to talk to him. She tells him that once you've been in supervision you recognise when things aren't right and she's notice the terrible pressure that Kirk is under in the packing department. But she's got a suggestion. Why doesn't he hire her sister, Gina?

Shona comes in and say she had to go and help a friend whose son had been rushed to hospital. Rita asks if the son is OK and Shona says she'll have to phone later because the son's father was there and things always get messy when he's around. Rita muses that she couldn't be a doctor. Here's Shona's friend's son and that murderer Clayton both in hospital. If she was a doctor she couldn't give them both the same care.

Steve's back home and Michelle confronts him outside the Rovers, demanding to know whether he went to the beach where they scattered their baby's ashes. She tells him that she'd thought of suggesting they go together today but didn't because she saw him putting Plan B in the car. Steve protests that Oliver is their baby's brother and he wanted him to know about Ruairi. Michelle's not having that. It's Ruairi's beach, especially today. Today would have been his birthday. Robert overhears and realises today would have been Michelle's due date.

Toyah's at Leanne's and takes the pregnancy test into the bathroom.

David's outside the pub. Down the street, Shona's on the phone to someone called Dane, telling him she left the hospital because she does care. "So are you going to tell me how Clayton is?"

David sits in the middle of the road brushing his hands across the cobbles where Kylie died. We see Eileen and Phelan get into the car for a driving lesson and as the car swings around the corner Eileen has to do an emergency stop to avoid hitting David. "As a learner driver, if I killed a drunk Platt would I get off with it?" she asks Phelan. Shona rushes over and drags David on to the pavement. David tells her there's not a mark left on the spot to show where Kylie died. "If Clayton dies, who will I hate then?"

At home, Leanne's about to give Oliver another dose of his medication when she realises something is wrong. She shakes him but he won't wake up.

The end (on a cliff-hanger)

Good evening. Background music as this gets written is Cerys Matthews on her Sunday morning programme on BBC 6 Music. If you can access it it is a great three hours of music and comes highly recommended from this chair.

This is episode 9163, also series 58, episode 101. It was written by Debbie Oates. The director was Jordan Hogg. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

Action commences in the hospital where a nurse is carrying baby Oliver whilst Leanne is telling Nick to phone Steve.

On the Street David is sat on the kerb with Shona. He tells her is celebrating, although Shona reports that his face is hardly happy! He can barely recall Kylie's funeral and did not attend the wake. Shona volunteers to take David home.

Also in the Street Peter meets R'Toyota coming down from the flat. He wants a chat. She is going to see Leanne. She changes her mind. Then Peter's phone rings - Daniel claims it is an emergency - he needs a lift to the station! R'Toyota listens to Peter and decides to change her mind again and tells him to take Daniel to the station. Peter is as confused as us - but does as he is told.

Michelle should have become a mother again today. She had a sleepless night. She is telling Robert that things should have been very different. He seeks to comfort her. The focus of her anger is Steve taking Oliver to "Ruairi's beach". Perhaps an annual tradition so that the "brothers" can know each other? Oliver building sandcastles with Steve and the ashes of Ruairi. She cries. They are in the office at the Bistro and Kate comes in and is sorry she did not know the date. She reports that Nick will not be coming in as Oliver has been taken to hospital. Michelle immediately rushes out to discover more.

At the hospital Leanne is explaining that Oliver was given an antihistamine for his rash and that subsequently he has been with Steve his father. The doctor will have to ask Steve when he arrives. The doctor is doing everything they can.

Kev wants a date night with Anna. She does not want to know. They meet Gail who is talking about cleaning Nick's flat - but Anna is more interested in news about Clayton which Rita told her about when she helping in place of Shona who has gone missing. Anna hopes Oliver is OK.

Aidan is going to interview Gina and Eva is worried it will drag on for hours. Toyah appears looking for Leanne. Eva tells Toyah to wait at theirs as Aidan is busy. Eva tells Aidan she will be 10 minutes.

David is telling Shona that he has a continuing fantasy about killing Clayton. And when he heard that something had happened - it was as if someone had acted on his behalf. But now he feels like he has been shown that he is a complete idiot. Clayton's death would change nothing. Kylie would still be gone. And why would he cheer someone else's death? Shona suggests he is on a journey - moving on? Forgiving Clayton? David merely says "What?" but the look on his face does not imply redemption is likely. Shone hopes she could find a way back for such a person. But David cannot see it when Kylie is dead. David scoffs at Shona calling her too nice. She promises him that is not the case.

Eva, as she admits unsympathetically, asks R'Toyota what she playing at - going ahead with the eggs when Peter had said not. Toyah confirms she has taken a pregnancy test - but again we are not told the result. Eva assumes from Toyah crying that it has not worked. I am not so sure. Is R'Toyota pregnant? Eva grabs a bottle of wine and one glass and pours Toyah a huge glass of wine.

In a booth at the Rovers Aidan is bizarrely interviewing Gina in front of Sally and Sophie. Gina is obviously very nervous. She claims to be very reliable. And she has done packing and posting. But she has had a few health issues - and to avoid any more questions claims they are "women's things". Aidan dives for cover. Aidan says he needs to check - but will not keep her waiting long.

Michelle is at the bar - but there has been no news from the hospital. Liz does not think that this is the best place for Michelle at the moment, but Michelle feels she needs to know that Oliver is alright.

Steve arrives at the hospital concerned that it might be meningitis. He saw the rash and gave some medicine to Oliver as he had some leftover from last time. Twice. They argue over being told. Nick gets in Steve's face and tells him that HE has over dosed Oliver.

After the break Aidan starts a call with "Hello Gorgeous" leading Sally, Gina and Sophie to believe he is speaking to Eva. We know he is speaking to Maria. Eva is busy with Toyah - does Maria happen to be free?

At another booth Anna is telling Kev she is off for an early night. She tells him to get himself another pint - she is good for nowt. She says she will see him later.

Sally knows she is going to have to get used to the word bipolar and is wondering if it will be easier than saying lesbian? And Gina makes her laugh by saying it is good she is not bi- as well as being bi-polar! Even Sophie sees the funny side. Aidan finishes his pint and hopes that Gina can use a staple gun - he needs to replace Kate in packing and she can start on Monday. Gina is happy but lies to Sally as she implies she told Aidan about her mental problems.

Oliver will be kept in overnight. All should be well. First the doctor wants a word with the parents about making sure this does not happen again. Nick claims it is all down to Oliver being passed back and forth. Leanne points out that it was Nick who insisted Steve should have him earlier. The doctor just wants to emphasise the need for good communication. They all go to see Oliver.

Shona has made some toast for David. Banana and honey is a good stomach lining. Shona starts petting David (the dog). Shona reckons she could write a hangover guide book. David wants to know why she is bothering with him and she has no idea. The dog is less complicated and has better whiskers. But she has wasted an evening on a self-pitying drunk. She says "The truth is ..." when simultaneously David (human) tries to kiss her and a key goes in the front door. She jumps up saying "No, No No." As Gail arrives. Shona explains she brought the drunk David home and David adds that he has a bunny hanana sandwich, sorry honey and banana!. Shona leaves as she goes David apologises for "earlier" which we know is the attempted kiss. Clayton reports Gail, according to the family liaison officer only has a broken wrist as the result of a fall. It was all rumours and unconnected with the trouble. He will be fine, David can go back to hating him! Shona goes and David wants a shower. A po faced Gail watches him take David upstairs.

Oliver seems to be responding normally. Steve and Leanne share cot side time. He tells her it is the date on which Ruairi was expected. She gives his back a pat as Nick returns with drinks and he spies them being very friendly. Oliver is going to be OK. Once Nick returns Steve heads off so that he can let Liz know all is well. He thanks Leanne for being allowed to be there. Nick does not want a lift from Steve - he will stay a while. Leanne will text any news. Nick is still glowering quietly.

Robert has joined Michelle in the Rovers. She has no idea how she wanted to spend the day. Robert just wants Michelle to talk to him and trust him. She is not alone. On the phone Steve brings Liz up to date. Once apprised Michelle and Robert leave.

Peter leaves a voicemail message for Toyah apologising for rushing off. He has got them a takeaway so will she come home so they can have a quiet night, a chat and get back on track. He loves her. At Eva's flat there are three empty bottles of wine, empty glasses and Toyah asleep on the sofa. Eva seems sober! One of the bottles was a posh one according to Aidan who returns after presumably several hours. Eva gets a duvet for Toyah. She tells Aidan that the situation between Toyah and Peter is none of his business. Eva needs to find out what Toyah is going to do. Eva will tell Aidan once she knows how Toyah will handle it. She does not like keeping things from him and he accepts that. He Says that "We don't always need to know everything, do we?" {He has his own secret at the moment after all}. We see Toyah's mobile - 3 missed calls and a voicemail all from Peter I would guess.

Later we see Gail arrive at Eileen's where the only person in the house is Shona. She has not told David about Clayton. She went to Clayton at the hospital earlier but as usual she fell out with his Dad (Dane I believe) and to keep things peaceful she left, rather than both being chucked out be security. Dane apparently mislead her over how serious the incident had been. Gail is impressed that Shona walked away - which is sometimes for the best. Gail pulls out £400, which she cannot afford - but she is willing to make sacrifices for her son. Shona can buy a ticket and it will tide her over until she gets a job. Gail wants Shona gone (no Gail wrong move - only Shona knows how evil Nathan is). Sooner the better.

Nick is telling David how Steve had it all planned. Steve is clever and crafty. Cozy with Leanne, playing the doting father. Nick believes Steve did it deliberately to Oliver. Even a drunk David has difficulty believing that Steve would overdose a baby. Nick disputes it. David is sure Nick does not really believe what he said. David tells him that Nick's paranoia will finish his relationship with Leanne. Nick needs to get a grip or he will lose. We see Nick finish a whisky.

Roll credits.

£400 to get outta this town - not enough Gail and frankly you need her around.

David, even drunk, spoke some very sensible words to Nick - but will he heed them?

Either Toyah is not pregnant so needs to admit the eggs have gone, or she is pregnant and needs to admit she has been on a bender (the French do not worry about such things). Either way she is in trouble. So it will be Peter's fault as usual.

And Michelle? You need to take a step back and think things through a little please.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 15 May

Written by Jonathan Harvey Directed by Peter Rose

Toyah has stayed over on Eva's sofa after that wine party the night before. When she wakes up, Eva tells her about Oliver's health crisis but all is ok now, she assures her. Peter comes to find her. She still hasn't told him she had IVF behind his back and it failed. She isn't pregnant. Eva tells him to go home and she'll send Toyah over once she's in fit state (she just ran to the loo to upchuck)

Everyone is still buzzing about Tracy's escapades with Rob. Tracy tells Peter she confessed because she thought Amy did it. They bicker a bit but really, they're on the same side. She also told Peter she's getting the money to buy the shop as her early inheritance. He'll have the money to buy the pub! He's still looking at an assault charge re: Chloe. Tracy takes a few shots at Peter for being with boring Toyah and having loved both Battersby sisters. Peter thinks his luck might finally be changing, things looking up and all that.

In true soap fashion, though, he's just jinxed himself. He calls the fertility clinic to schedule the IVF appointment and finds out she's already done it when they had discussed that they would put it off until things were looking up. When Toyah finally gets home, Peter is confrontational. He thinks she's using him for her own ends, never mind them supposed to be a partnership. He doesn't seem upset when she says it didn't work, he's too angry at her lying to him all this time. They row about all kinds of things. Turns out she doesn't trust him because addicts are professional liars and she isn't sure he wasn't the one that hurt his father or that he did or didn't assault Chloe. Ouch. So much for loyalty. He shouts at her. This time she's in the wrong, not him and he storms out.

Peter heads to Leanne to confide in her. He's not upset that Leanne knew what Toyah was up to, he's more upset that Toyah isn't sure of his innocence for one or the other of the assault charges. Leanne believes him. He doesn't beat up women or old men. Leanne is thoughtful.

Leanne brings Oliver home from hospital, stressed out. When she gets up from a nap, Nick is singing to the baby. She's still in a mood. Nick has decided they should have a naming ceremony for the baby. She doesn't think that's a good idea, considering they'd have to invite Steve. Nick wants what Nick wants, however and that's a done deal. Later, he tells David and David thinks it's a good idea because that's what Nick wants to hear. Nick is even planning to have it done within the next day or so. Gail is a bit put off that it's not in church and thought a church lends a bit of gravitas to the whole thing but never mind, she rushes off to make sure she has something both suitable and clean to wear. David realizes that Nick is hoping the last minute do means Steve won't be able to come. Nick agrees but says he'll invite Steve anyway, to show willing.

Ty and Luke have been teasing Kevin about sexy time with Anna and Kevin looks distinctly uncomfortable. Tyrone is still a bit preoccupied with Fiz's old friend Kim but the two friends have a chat. Kevin admits he and Anna are not as close as he wants to be, ever since the accident. Tyrone thinks a mini-holiday might help. It's a good idea and Kevin books a hotel for them to have a romantic break. By the time he's done that, Faye is hanging out in the garage, having some time off school and overhears that Kevin is going to surprise Anna with the trip.

The cafe is buzzing today: Eileen is still having driving lessons in her new car, telling Roy all about it. Faye begs Phelan to take her to Young Offenders again and he agrees, but keep it quiet. He then tells Eileen he's got a job on so can't take her for another lesson. Shona tells Roy she's moving away, a cousin has got her a job in Wolverhampton. Roy is dismayed. Todd is gleeful. (You know, I notice that Eileen has taken up a hearty dislike for Anna, perhaps not as strong as Phelan's but it's there. They were never friends but Eileen believes all her husband's tales against Anna, I suppose)

Todd brings David the dog back to David the man and tells both Davids that Shona is moving. Later David sees Shona outside, grabs the dog and goes out to talk to her about leaving. There seems to be a bit of a spark between them but both of them make out that it's just one of those things, David mentioning that the dog will miss her. She admits she'll miss him (the dog, or maybe both Davids) as well. David reckons the dog will not forget about her, and we all know what he's really trying to say.

Phelan takes a phone call as Faye runs up and gets in his van. Bad timing, because Anna comes out of the cafe just then and sees her and you can almost see the red mist descending!

We see a shot of Chloe's house and Leanne knocking on the door. She pushes her way in. She's got words to say. She introduces herself as the mother of Peter Barlow's son and she wants Chloe to drop the charges. But there's another knock on the door. It's the other Battersby sister! The two Battersby sisters present a united front against the crazy Chloe. This could be interesting.

Tvor

Good evening. Double delivery from me this week as I stand in for the absent Karen. She is in Asia and I am sure she will be having a great time.

This is episode 9165, also series 58 episode 103. It was written by Carmel Morgan. The director was Peter Rose. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We are at Chloe's house where the Battersby sisters, Leanne and Toyah, are combining to undermine Chloe's confidence. the barbs flow back and forth between the sisters and Chloe over Peter and his activities. Leanne points out that Peter was simply being nice because he was on the meter. Chloe wants them to go. They refuse. Chloe tries a joke but neither of them laugh. Chloe remarks that Peter is a great kisser. R'Toyota tells her to drop the charges. Or what responds Chloe. They sit down and Chloe is leafing through a magazine. She tells them they are trespassing. Leanne says she has been married to Peter and he would never hit a woman. Leanne launches the case for the defence of Peter and calls Chloe a malicious liar. The sisters stand and Toyah nods at Leanne and then pretends her shoulder hurts. She turns to Chloe and says that if she comes near her again she will call the police. Chloe denies touching her. Leanne has observed her brutal attack on her sister and she will if necessary beat Toyah black and blue like she did when they were children. If Chloe does not correct her statement and drop charges they will claim she assaulted Toyah. Chloe agrees to drop the assault charge - but Peter still had time to go home and push daddy Barlow down the stairs. The sisters look at each other.

Anna opens the driver's door on Pat's bright red van where Faye is sat in the passenger seat. Anna wants her out but Faye tells her to calm down. Anna thinks that Pat may have harmed Faye but she explains that Pat has been giving her lifts to see Seb. Anna gets into the car, belts up Faye and starts the van and drives them away. Pat sees her drive away.

Shona is sweeping outside the cafe. Roy tells her that she should not be moving on. He says she has settled in well here and with Eileen. She has forged some meaningful friendships. He knows her heart is not really in moving on. He tells her there is no loss of face if she changes her mind. Shona smiles.

In the Rovers Peter is at the bar and Todd is choosing music on the juke box. Todd joins Billy and asks if the latter is still sulking about Summer. Billy denies it. He has told Drew that it is a no. But Billy is clearly out of sorts. He notes that they are doing better than Drew. In the background Nick has brought Oliver in to see Steve. Nick sort of apologises for being harsh to Steve as Steve has a cuddle with his son. Nick then reveals the naming ceremony tomorrow. Nick then tells Steve it is going to be very low key - hardly anyone there. Steve says he will give it a miss. Nick has achieved the desired result. Steve hopes it goes well and he will raise a glass tomorrow. Peter is earwigging all of this.

Anna pulls up on a quiet suburban street. Anna had previously told Faye to stay away from Seb - he is disturbed. She admits she hates Pat and reckons Seb is going the same way seeing how he attacked Jackson. Faye responds that Pat is not her mate - he has just been giving her lifts. Anna counters that Pat does not do something for nothing - he always has a motive. Anna tells Faye has been lying and sneaking around behind her back. Faye says that Pat is the only person who understands what Seb means to her. Anna reckons it is simply Pat getting at her. Faye says that her boyfriend is locked up and is desperate to see her. Anna is trying to protect her and she does not like the way Faye is talking to her. Faye gets out of the van and tells Anna that she would rather live in care than with her and then runs away down the street.

On Coronation Street Peter follows Nick and Oliver out of the Rovers and along the Street. Peter congratulates Nick on his clever work with Steve in the Rovers. Peter says Steve has every right to be at the naming. Nick says he was invited. Peter says it was a mind game and Nick knows it. Normally Nick has to bow to Peter in that department.

In the Rovers Roy, Todd, Billy and Eileen are saying farewell to Shona. However Shona offers to buy the drinks because she has decided to stay after all. Gail overhears and is not happy. Shona goes to the bar and returns £380 to Gail and will pay back the other £20. Everyone except Gail seems happy with the decision. Shona kisses Roy as a one-off and merely says that he knows why and he adds he was glad to help.

Izzy is chiding Gary for not making progress with the house hunting with Sarah. Gary's phone goes - apparently Faye is asking if she can move in with them.

Pat knocks on Kev's front door and asks him where his van and Anna are - at which point Anna drives back along the Street. Anna storms across from the van. Anna explains what has been going on and has to admit that Faye ahs done a runner. Kev gets Anna indoors. She tells Pat to stay away from Faye. And then offers some useful advice that if Anna spent more time listening and not kicking off then Faye might not have asked him for help in the first place.

Leanne and Toyah reckon that Janice would be proud of them. And Toyah should cheer up. She wishes she could have had more faith in Peter in the first place. Toyah just knows that Peter is going to love taking the moral high ground. But Peter still does not have an alibi. Leanne remembers that she was walking the Street trying to get Oliver to sleep and so she saw Peter sitting at the window of the flat. So she will go and tell the police that his alibi of being alone in the flat is true. She will lie to the police for her sister and Simon's dad. And she knows he is innocent. (The only way she can KNOW Peter is innocent is if she did it).

Billy and Todd have moved to the bar. They are still not in alignment. Todd goes to the gents and Sean tells Billy that he can be a good listener if one is needed. Billy says it is a bump in the road and Sean asks if it is a sleeping policeman, pothole or ravine but Billy will not be drawn and tells Sean that he is going for a quiet walk and wants some peace. Sean will pass it onto Todd.

Peter returns to the flat where Toyah has made her special veggie spag bol. Peter has had a phone call from DS MacKinnon. Apparently Chloe has dropped all charges and another witness has given him an alibi. He is baffled. Toyah goes looking for parmesan cheese. Peter cannot believe her indifference. Toyah eventually admits that the Battersby sisters paid Chloe a visit. And the new witness is Leanne. Peter is struggling to take all of this in. Toyah just wants to put all of the mess behind them.

Nick is getting dinner ready and tells Leanne he has invited Steve - but the McDonalds won't be coming to the naming ceremony. Leanne is a little surprised. But does not question him further.

At Kev's Tim has been sent to fetch Faye. Gary and Izzy tell Anna that Faye wants to stay with them and they promise to keep her away from Pat and Seb. Gary points out that if she comes home now there will simply be arguments. Anna has to give way.

David is getting a beer. Gail brings him up to date that Shona is not leaving town. Gail thinks she is unreliable. David reckons if Roy has taken her back she must be a good grafter. And Billy seems to think she is OK, helps with the fund raising. And she is particularly good at bringing dogs home. Gail says that he is giving her a glowing character reference. David just thinks Gail has an irrational downer on her. Gail admits she does not trust Shona one inch.

Nick and Leanne are washing up. Nick has a replacement Heffalump with the right number of legs. Leanne tells Nick the entirely fictitious story she has cooked up as alibi for Peter. Nick has trouble believing she has only just remembered all of this - but she puts it down to baby brain.

Kev comes downstairs with bags packed. But Anna is not interested. All this business with Faye - she needs to be there in case Faye wants to talk. Kev tries to convince her otherwise - but Anna stubbornly refuses to take the four star break. Kev repeats that a couple of nights away will break the cycle. He wants it to be just the two of them. She says she cannot go. She will not explain further, nor will she go. Kev agrees to call and cancel and see if he can get some money back.

Nick is at David's telling him Leanne blatantly lied to him. He knows this because he saw Peter sat on his car in Clitheroe Drive that night and he reckons therefore that Peter made her do it. Nick was returning from the wine merchants and saw Peter smoking. He has said nothing because he has no reason to provide Barlow a lifeline. David calls Nicholas a very dark boy. Even David is surprised. And of course if Nick tells Leanne that she is lying then she will know that Nick is a vindictive psycho says David. And the closing shot of is of naughty Nick enjoying his new status.

Roll credits.

So Peter has a false alibi and a real alibi. Did Leanne do the pushing? But why?

And how much longer will Kev put up with Anna's obvious refusal to go to bed? Is it just her legs?

When will Summer appear and charm her way into Todd's life and change his mind?

Liz will be very upset when she finds she has missed the naming ceremony.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Wednesday 17 May

It's the day of Oliver's naming ceremony, but Nick is sitting brooding about the alibi Leanne has given Peter. Leanne tells him to forget about Peter, and tries to cheer him up.

Sarah's in the Kabin when Gary comes in, followed by Anna who is worrying about Faye. Rita is looking forward to the naming ceremony, but Sarah tells Gary that Bethany isn't coming, she hasn't replied to any texts.

Bethany, meanwhile, is cuddled up with Nathan watching tv. She gets up from the sofa saying she's going to bed, it's 9 am. Nathan tells her that Ian texted earlier, he wants a little party and he hopes Bethany is up for it. Bethany, however, seems dismayed. Nathan tells her she'll be in the mood once she's had some sleep.

Leanne and Nick are pushing the pram down the street when they meet Peter and Toyah coming out of the cafe. Nick stands there scowling, and then remarks that Peter must be over the moon now he's a free man. Peter says he is, and thanks Leanne. Nick goes off then, to the Bistro.

Mary arrives at the florist shop and tells Tracy that she came home without Norris, it seems she had to call on her mother on the way back, so she left him there. Tracy then tells her that Peter is in the clear over Ken's attack as a witness came forward. Tracy then checks her bank account and finds that |Ken has transferred the funds to enable her to buy the shop! She squeals with delight and they hug each other.

Kate and Alya are walking down the street and meet Johnny. Kate asks if he'll join them for lunch later but he makes an excuse and hurries away. Kate thinks he's acting weird.

Rosie and David come out of the cafe and see Adam emptying the gym and putting things into a skip. Rosie thinks Adam is very good looking – so David hurries off to the naming ceremony.

Over in the Bistro the naming ceremony is about to begin, Audrey is talking to Gail and wondering if Michelle will come. She says it can't be easy for Michelle, having lost her own baby, seeing Steve's other child get christened. Gail points out it's not a christening but a naming ceremony and anyway, to all intents and purposes Nick is Oliver's dad, not Steve.

Nick, however, seems to be missing. Leanne tries to phone him and leaves messages. David says he has a spare key at home and goes off to check the flat, and Sarah goes off the check the cafe and the pub.

Kate and Alya are in the pub, and Liz starts wondering where the other regulars are. Rita and Audrey are usually there by now. Kate starts to say that they're at the Bistro, while Steve gestures at her, behind Liz's back, to be quiet. Just then Jenny comes in and says how busy she's been, but hasn't seen Johnny all day. Kate is surprised, she thought he'd been helping with the wedding plans. Sarah comes in and asks Steve and Liz if they've seen Nick, he's supposed to be at Oliver's naming ceremony but has gone missing. This is the first Liz has heard of it, and suddenly the penny drops. She gives Steve a smack. "Naming ceremony?" she says.

A morose Nick, meanwhile, is drinking whisky in the flat when David lets himself in. He tells David that no one cares whether he's there or not, after all he's not really Oliver's dad. He says he's nothing to Oliver, nothing to Simon, nothing to Leanne – just a big pile of nothing.

Back in the pub, Liz is ranting at Steve – her grandson is being christened and he didn't even tell her. Steve tries to say it's not exactly a christening, but Liz doesn't care, she wants to be there, and she goes off to get ready.

Back in Nick's flat, David is making a quiet phone call to Sarah telling to stall everything while he tries to sober Nick up. Then, when he tries to reason with his brother, Nick shows him a restaurant receipt for the night Leanne says she saw Peter. He knows she's lying. "Why does this matter now?" asks David. Nick reckons that Leanne has put Peter before him, by risking prison to save him. Then David reminds Nick now lucky he is – he has a successful business, a woman he loves and a kid, but it's not enough, he constantly has to pick at it like some sort of scab, he won't be happy until he's pushed everything away, including Leanne. "Happiness is wasted on someone like you," says David, and leaves.

Adam is sitting on the steps of the gym when Rosie comes along. He tells her Dev has got him working because he's a bit behind with the rent. She sits down beside him and he tells her that now Tracy and Peter are in the clear, and Daniel has the tram ticket as an alibi, he's the only left in the frame. Tracy asks if he thinks it was Daniel. "Of course it was," says Adam. Rosie tells him to try to get to the bottom of it all.

Tracy, Mary and Amy are staring at the name above the florist shop, considering renaming it. Just then Norris comes along with his neck in a support collar. Mary jumps. "Surprised to see me?" he asks.

Sarah gets back to the Bistro, closely followed by David, and they explain to Gail and Audrey that Nick is drunk. Just then Leanne comes up behind them, and David quickly changes the story and tells her that Nick is ill, he's been throwing up. Just then Steve and Liz walk in, and Liz starts to get stroppy with Leanne as she wasn't invited. Leanne tells her that Steve said she didn't want to come. They then all start to squabble about who Oliver's father really is, until Simon tells them all to shut up. He points out that his real mum died, but that doesn't make Leanne any less of a mum. He says that kids are prizes to be won in a raffle, and they all look suitably chastened. Leanne then says they'd better get on with it, without Nick.

Amy is back for lunch, and is in the florist's with Tracy, Mary and Norris. She won't go back to school until she finds out what has happened to Norris. He declares that it was all Mary's fault, walking by the lake she wanted to take a photo of geese and they got startled and all flew towards him, and in trying to run away he slipped on a cow-pat. It seems that Mary got him to a local hospital and then abandoned him.

Back in the Bistro, Gary gets a text from Faye – she's over at Kevin's, so he goes over to check she's ok. Meanwhile, Rita is busy taking photos of Steve and Liz with baby Oliver, much to Gail's disgust, and Leanne decides to go and see why Nick is behaving like a schoolboy.

Bethany is pleading with Nathan to be allowed to go with her mother to a wedding fair. He says it's up to her – but the look on his face shows he's not happy.

Gary arrives at Kevin's to find Faye with a holdall. Just then, Anna arrives and assumes that Faye has come home, and is upset when Faye tells her she's just come to get some stuff, she's not stopping.

Leanne has gone home and is reading the riot act to Nick. He was so adamant about bringing Oliver up as his own, but he couldn't even be bothered to turn up to his big day. Nick then shows her the receipt, saying he knows she didn't see Peter that night, and reminds her that she could go down for it if the police find out. He asks what kind of mother risks prison to give her cheating, lying, alcoholic ex a false alibi. "If you get arrested for this, don't come running to me," he sneers, and walks out of the room.

Anne Logan.

Friday 19 May

We open this Friday episode with Billy on the phone in the street. He's talking to Christina, Drew's care worker. She tells him that all Drew can talk about is what's going to happen to Summer.

Kate's also out in the street, just in time to see Johnny say Goodbye to a leggy blonde outside Victoria Court. When he comes her way, Kate asks who the woman was, but Johnny denies speaking to any woman and changes the subject to mentioning how well Kate and Jenny appear to be getting on.

Gail's grumpy and David's being sarcastic about it. Gail doesn't think Sarah should be taking Bethany to a wedding fair (yes, I know most of them spell it "fair" but I refuse!). Sarah sees it as a bonding thing. She thinks that if she can rebuild her relationship with Bethany, then maybe Bethany will see sense and "dump the loser."

Bethany's in Nathan's flat. She lets Mel in the door and tells her she'll have to open up because Bethany's off out with her Mum. Mel looks worried. "And Nathan's all right with this?" She tries to persuade Bethany that the wedding fair will be boring and to persuade her to come out drinking instead, but Bethany's looking forward to the day out.

Leanne's at home when she gets a text reminding her that Oliver's due his jabs. Nick's being sarcastic about her making up alibis for other men. He and David really are brothers today. Leanne protests that she did what she had to in order to protect Simon. Nick tells her that when she goes to jail she'll lose both her boys.

Nathan's furious when Mel tells him Bethany's gone out with her Mum. He gives her the salon keys and tells her to open up and earn some money for him = that's the only way you can do that for me these days. Then he goes off to "take care of Bethany."

Rosie's turned up at Adam's flat (Adam's and Daniel's, but only Adam is there) and wants to help him prove he's not the bad guy. Adam tells her Daniel and Sinead have gone to Oxford. "It's the perfect time to search his room, then," says Rosie.

The factory workers are trying to think up ideas for the Underworld anniversary party. Sally says that if clients are coming then it needs to look quite classy. Gina suggests a theme. The party is happening on Monday. Now, I might not have organised many corporate events, many parties classy enough to impress company directors, or many anniversary parties. but it seems to me that three days is cutting it a bit fine. Kate promises to get some quotes (three days!! Maybe this storyline is left over from January?). Jenny suggests Kate run her ideas past Johnny first. Where is he, by the way? He went out an hour ago and they've not seen him since. Kate looks worried.

Bethany arrives at the Platt residence only for Gail to tell her that Sarah's gone. She thought they were meeting at the wedding fair, though Bethany was sure they were meeting at the house and going together. Bethany and Gail have a bonding moment.

Aidan's on the phone organising a suite. He hangs up when Kate comes into the office asking about Johnny. Aidan says he's at the dentist's. They're interrupted by Kirk coming in to ask whether he wants to come over to see Liam later. Kirk's looking after him for the night. Aidan asks Kate to sort the party costs and suggests they have the whole thing at the Bistro instead of at the factory.

Leanne's getting read to go out. She's put the stroller in the communal hallway and goes in to pick up Oliver from his cot. But her phone, which she's put on the stroller, rings and on her way to answer it she knocks the door which shuts behind her, leaving baby Oliver on his own inside the flat.

Bethany's outside the house when Nathan stops his car and tells her: "Ian called. He wants to come over later. I need you."

Nick arrives to open the door, to tell Leanne she should be more careful and to make great show of being the only person who can calm down the crying baby.

Sarah's back, having had a text from Bethany telling her there's an emergency at work and she can't come. Gail rings Bethany's phone but it goes straight to voicemail. Sarah's had enough. She wants to see her daughter and goes stomping off to find her.

Bethany's wearing a new outfit, has done her hair in a different style and is putting on some make-up. Nathan stops her from putting on too much, saying Ian likes the natural look. He suggests Bethany have a drink and relax while he goes off to pick up Ian. When he's left, Bethany pours herself a drink - about two thirds of a glass of vodka.

At the Bistro, they've managed to whip up a tray of canape samples with absolutely no notice at all.

Mata Ha-Rosie and her sidekick Adam enter the Bistro with the great plan of somehow distracting Robert so they can search Daniel's locker. Rosie tells Adam to distract Robert. "How?" he asks. "I dunno. You've both got great hair - talk about that," she says. When Robert comes out of the kitchen, Rosie distracts him with a cocktail order and says she has to go to the little girls' room.

At the doctor's, after Oliver's had his vaccinations, Leanne gets a bit weepy and tells the doctor she feels like a terrible mother.

Billy's in the salon having his hair cut. Audrey sends David off on a biscuit-buying errand. Audrey encourage him to chat, drawing an analogy between hairdressers and a priest hearing confession. Billy says he and Todd are having more than a row. He tells her about Summer and Todd's attitude. Audrey says it's a big decision. Todd will need to get used to it over months and months. Summer might not like them. And they can't all live at Eileen's. She tells Billy about the death of Todd and Sarah's Billy and says it might not be Todd not wanting to settle - it might be that the whole idea of being a father again terrifies him.

Kirk's just discovered goat's cheese and has to spit out a canape. He's horrified to think goats produce milk. Never mind Aidan, Johnny and Alya, the decisions on the canapes are being made by the machinists. Kate needs a £50 deposit for the Bistro and heads into the office to get it out of a cash bag which has been left there. Nope. I have no idea what this business is doing trading in cash. It's a wholesale business. Anyway, it gives the scriptwriters a carefully contrived moment for Kate to be in the office when the phone goes. The voicemail kicks in the Kate hears someone from an Edgbaston hotel confirming a booking for Mr Connor for tonight.

Bethany is still drinking when Sarah arrives.

Robert throws Rosie out of the Bistro. "Jog on, Batgirl!" he snaps.

Kate is with Eva and Jenny as Jenny tries on her dress. Aidan comes home and Kate tells him quietly about seeing Johnny with the blonde woman and about the phone call re the hotel. She's sure he's seeing someone else.

Bethany and Sarah struggle as Sarah tries to stop her drinking. Next thing, Bethany is out cold on the sofa. Sarah makes an urgent call to Gary, telling him Bethany's passed out and Nathan's on his way back.

The End.

Margaret Carr

Good evening. Good evening, welcome to another update. This is episode 9168, it was written by Jayne Hollinson and directed by Peter Rose. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We are at Eva and Aidan's flat where Kate is reporting the phone call concerning the hotel room upgrade for tonight and Aidan comes clean - Kate has broken the surprise he was planning for Eva (actually Maria but never mind) of them having a cheeky break! Eva is really made up. Kate is still concerned about the blonde she saw with Johnny earlier. Jenny appears wearing an off the shoulder wedding dress which to my untutored eye looks quite stunning. Jenny cannot wait to be married.

Toyah (about size zero) emerges from the chip shop with chips and offers one to Leanne sitting on a bench outside the Rosamund Street Medical centre. Leanne refuses. Toyah takes her home to sort out what is wrong. Once a brew is made Leanne explains that Nick's comments about her possibly going to prison is too big a risk - putting Peter before Oliver, Simon and Nick. R'Toyota tells her that Nick only said it because he cannot stand Peter. She reminds Leanne that Nick is not perfect either.

Maria gets a text message from Aidan: "Sorry it's off. Explain later xxx".

Rosie swans into Adam's flat calling an ungrateful, arrogant, big-headed - he stops her and points out the last two mean the same thing. Rosie denies as there would not two words if they meant the same! He still apologises and she accept the apology. Adam cannot see now how he can prove it was not him. Rosie suggests a way of cheering Adam up - and he turns her down. He thinks they should just be mates. He fancies her - but she is a rally nice girl and he kind of likes her a lot. He means it. Every girl friend he has he ends up hurting, he gets bored and dumps them. She says it is the nicest way she has ever been dumped. They agree to be mates. She says it a shame to waste fancying each other so she agrees! She asks if they can go shopping together as best mates - but Adam is not stretching that far. She snuggles against him.

Elsewhere Nathan and Ian arrive at the former's flat for the "party". No sign of Bethany. Nathan phones Bethany - but she has left her phone behind. Nathan offers Ian Melanie as a replacement but she is apparently past her use by date and he want his money back. Nathan pulls out a thick white envelope - £500 if £20 notes but more if there are any fifties I would guess. Ian departs and will not be back tomorrow. Nathan needs to get his act together.

Gary is still carrying a comatose Bethany as they return to the Platt residence. On the sofa she shows signs of waking. Sarah says that Nathan is preventing her seeing her own daughter. Gary reassures Sarah that they have held back deliberately. But Bethany is still drunk. Sarah is never letting her go again.

Billy is preparing food when Todd returns. Billy apologises for earlier - but Todd is sorry that he struggles to put other people first. Todd is aware that he needs to consider the weakening Drew and Summer. Billy tells him they both have to want the same things. Todd should not feel bad for being honest.

Eva in an extremely revealing and bouncy top is looking forward to the hotel break and wants assurances they will not come home like last time when Maria suddenly showed up and Aidan had a headache - can't happen as Eva has packed the paracetamol! Maria sees them getting into the car and obviously works out that Aidan has had a better offer!

Gail is at Sally's and the kids are asleep so no point in returning at the moment. Bethany comes to and sits up - with a pounding headache. She realises she is at home. Sarah updates her on events earlier as she cannot remember. When Sarah tells her it is 7:30 Bethany realises she is desperately late for the start of the Coronation Street episode and attempts to rush back to Nathan's. Gary gives her aspirins and water. Almost instantly she feels sick and rushes upstairs. Sarah saw the panic and believes Bethany is scared of Nathan. Gary says Bethany will take a lot of persuading not to go back to Nathan.

Toyah wanders into the Bistro. He denies doing anything to Leanne whom Toyah found in bits. They argue over Leanne's actions. Toyah points out that he is upset because Leanne was not thinking of him and his petty little insecurities. His taking on two other men's kids is obviously eating away at him Toyah adds. Basically he wishes Peter and Steve did not exist. R'Toyota lays it down clearly that neither Peter or Steve is going anywhere. So Nick should grow up and get used to it. And he can stop bullying Leanne. If he does it again then he will answer to R'Toyota. She leaves having made her point.

Bethany comes downstairs and opens her bag to look for her phone. She needs to get back - Nathan will be worried for her. Bethany tells Sarah she had no right to bring her back to the Street - Sarah points out she was out for the count. Sarah calms the situation and says she has not seen Bethany in ages and just wants a chat. Bethany says she is late and tries to go but Sarah asks if she is scared of Nathan? Gary assures her that she is safe with them and they will protect her. Bethany denies being scared of Nathan and asks if they are off their heads? She shouts that Nathan is brilliant and will do anything for her. Sarah wants to know why she was drunk - drinking to oblivion is not good. Bethany counters that it was for fun. She goes to the front door but Gary bars her way. She goes to the back door and finds it locked. Bethany in absolute panic tells Sarah that she cannot do this.

After the break Todd and Billy are in the Rovers and in response to Todd's query Billy tells us that the alternative is for Summer to go to Drew's parents. They have met Summer a few times but are not keen on homosexuals and certainly do not think that gays should have children. Drew had hoped that Summer might heal the rift with his parents but it did not work. Todd agrees to think again about having Summer but makes no promises (and we all knew he would agree in the end didn't we?).

Kate wanders into the Rovers where a child free Maria is given the update on Eva and Aidan going away to a fancy hotel. Jenny dashes in before going. She has had some ideas for the wedding menu which need passing onto Robert. Jenny says Johnny could not wait to get rid of her and reckons he is holding a party once she is out of town. Jenny departs at high speed and Kate looks worried (about Johnny).

Bethany tells Sarah that there is nothing to worry about. Sarah is worried about Bethany being isolated from her family. Bethany points out it was her choice to stay away - particularly after the way Gary behaved. And when they went round Bethany did not want them gate crashing a party. Sarah says that Nathan seems a bit controlling. Bethany says there is nothing going on. Sarah knows that Bethany is not happy at the moment and Bethany admits that things are not entirely brilliant at the moment. She puts it down to the age gap - they have few shared interests and not much to talk about. Sarah accepts that is understandable. Bethany admits that since she moved in and it got serious - well she has had second thoughts. Sarah agrees that it has all been very fast. Sarah says that if Bethany did want to move back in and it is her choice of course but she would always be welcome. Bethany nods, her face brighter and says maybe that would be for the best. Sarah knows that it is not going to be easy but feels Bethany is making the right decision. Bethany thanks her mother and says sorry for snapping earlier, but did not want to admit her mother was right. Bethany stands, says there is not point in putting it off, will go and get her stuff and tell Nathan it is over. Gary offers to go with her but Bethany says there is no need she can do it herself. At this point David returns and Bethany screams "Let me out". David wants to know what is going on. Bethany screams that she hates both of them (Sarah and Gary). David sends Max upstairs. Bethany says they have held her prisoner and will not let her out. Sarah tells David about Bethany being drunk. David decides to duck out of the conversation. Bethany picks up a vase of flowers and hurls it at Gary (it misses). Bethany starts throwing photos and other ornaments to the ground and screaming. I think Bethany grabs a glass shard in her hand and rushes at Gary stabbing him in the left arm. He drops to the ground and she runs past him and out of the door. They chase after Bethany but she has disappeared from sight before they get outside.

Kate arrives at Johnny and Jenny's flat. Johnny emerges in his bathrobe and Kate pushes past him to check who is hiding in the bedroom. No-one. As he goes to run his bath he falls flat on the floor.

Rosie is eating kale chips. Adam turns them down - he will stick to smoky bacon. Sinead returns from Oxford - but Daniel has gone to the library to study. Sinead may not have had a great romantic break - but she did think Oxford was amazing. Sinead would have liked to stay longer but Daniel has an exam tomorrow.

Johnny reckons he tripped. Kate remembers when he stumbled outside the pub. She tells him he needs to see a doctor. He says he does not need a doctor. Johnny explains the blonde she saw earlier is a masseur that comes round once a week and it helps his aches and pains. He is just getting older - but she must not tell Jenny. He is going to have a bath and early night and tells Kate to go.

David is clearing up the mess. Nathan did not answer when Gary called round. No luck finding Bethany. Gary has not gone to the hospital over his arm (and we all say Line of Duty and we know the risks don't we children?). Given the time passed I am surprised David had not managed to clear the place up - so Sarah and Gary set about it. Sarah realises she has lost Bethany.

On a canalside we see Bethany shaking holding a very bloody right hand in her left hand. She is sobbing and is in a dark place both physically and mentally.

Roll credits.

In other news we understand that having been woefully underused Claire King will be leaving in the near future (perhaps she pushed Ken, although why I cannot say).

Not sure Maria will be happy over being stood up. But I do not understand how she could have gone to a hotel for the night as she is wearing a tag and has to be in her own home by 19:00. Simple error by the writers there.

As mentioned David had plenty of time to clear the broken glass. And I am not sure that Gary's arm will not fall off.

Toyah seems to have the measure of Nick. I cannot get my head around Rosie and Adam being best mates, that really does stretch the mental capabilities!

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 22 May

Written by John Kerr Directed by John Anderson

Bethany spent the night under a bridge by the canal. Here comes Craig, chatting to his mother on the phone, possibly on his way to work? He sees her from the back and approaches to see if the person is ok and sees it's Bethany who still has a bloody hand.

Daniel is deep into his studies. Sinead is trying to get him to eat but he's not hungry and probably exhausted from doing his course work most of the night. He's got an exam later and is stressed. They are very important and they mean their future, helping them to get away to Oxford. Adam comes in the room and offers to make tea. Daniel declines. Adam hears Daniel talking about Oxford and takes it all in. She's encouraging.

Gary has taken the day off to try to cheer up Sarah who is beside herself with worry. Gary suggests they call in the police.

Norris is tetchy this morning, irritated that Mary has not really paid much attention to his suffering. She's distracted because she's had a phone call from Jude, her son, who is planning on a move and seems up in the air about it. She wishes she could help him.

Kirk and Aidan are unloading an order of silk. Johnny asks them to get on with it while he checks on the party arrangements for later. He sees Kate striding over and tries to avoid her by taking an arm load of rolls of silk, so as to be too busy to talk. She will not be put off.

Craig is trying to get Bethany to talk to him but she refuses. He realizes she's been injured and she says she had a fight, and not with Nathan. She admits she had a row with her mother and broke some glass and she accidentally hurt Gary. She's afraid to go home. He insists on taking her to the hospital at least, to get her cut seen to. She goes with him.

Adam watches Daniel work and asks him about moving to Oxford. He ascertains that Daniel hasn't told Ken that he might move and says he admires Daniel in a way. He can be so focused and single minded. He calls Daniel cold and clinical. Daniel counters by calling Adam a liar and a cheat. Adam, satisfied he's hit a nerve, smirks and leaves.

Johnny is favouring an arm and leaves the rest of the unloading to the younger men. He goes into the office, in pain. Out on the floor, Eva is bragging about the beautiful hotel room and the action going on. Beth, not to be outdone, adds that she and Kirky are "at it like rabbits most nights". TMI for Alya! Sean surmises that Aidan hasn't proposed yet in spite of the romantic night. Eva says "there's no rush" and insists she's not disappointed but I reckon Sean's pointed questions have planted the seed of discontent.

Norris finds Mary putting an order in the florist van later. He invites her for lunch but she's too busy. Turns out he really wants her to make him lunch because he's having difficulty with pain in his neck. She promises to come over later in that case.

Neil comes to Nathan's. He's been called by Nathan because Bethany hasn't been seen since yesterday. He can't go to Coronation Street and ask and asks Neil to keep an eye out. He promises to owe him one.

Adam sees Mary still loading the van and offers to help Mary. Mary reveals that Tracy has ordered her not to let Adam near the business and agrees with Adam. Tracy doesn't trust him.

Over the road, Ken collars a stressed Sinead to ask about Daniel's exam. Sinead tries to brush him off but he keeps asking questions. She snaps at him to leave them alone. She tells Ken he doesn't have any clue how stressful things are. Adam has overheard all this. Ken is baffled. He looks at Adam but does not greet him.

Tim tells Gina that Sally's enjoying having her around and spending time with her sister. Gina replies "same!" but she's uncomfortable.

Adam unlocks the door to Number 1, peering around to see if anyone is looking.

Craig sits with Bethany in the A&E waiting room. He's a bit tired as he's just off a night shift (so that's where he was coming from when he found her). She looks like she'd rather not be there and she eventually tells him what happened, how her mother found her drunk and "asleep" and kidnapped her. Craig declares everyone is worried about her. He hands her his phone so she can call her mother and tell her she's ok.She says she will and Craig goes for a drink.

Daniel comes out of the door of the flat. Adam grabs Daniel's arm and wants him to come with him. He thinks he knows who hurt his granddad and wants to show him some evidence. There's a car out front of the house that's unfamiliar. Adam says he borrowed it and opens the boot. There's nothing in it and Daniel turns to leave but Adam grabs him, punches him in the stomach and loads him into the boot. In broad daylight. On the street (just on the corner of Viaduct street). Nobody sees. Nobody. In spite of the Bistro 20 feet away and 2 shops not far either. He wrestles Daniel's phone from him and gets in the car just as Sinead texts to wish Daniel good luck for his exam while Daniel shouts and pounds on the boot. Still nobody notices.

After the break, we're in the factory. Beth finds a stressed Sinead who insists she and Daniel are ok. She tells Beth they have decided to move to Oxford. Izzy asks Aidan if there will be any fit men. Aidan tells them they're not allowed to get bladdered and promises that he's got a surprise announcement later at the party that's celebrating Underworld's 20 years in business. Sean reckons Aidan's going to propose in front of everyone. Eva starts to look intrigued at the idea. Kate arrives and finds her father in the office. He tries to put her off but she's not having it. They have to talk.

Adam sees Tim pull up beside him while he's at a red light. He turns up the music before winding down the window to exchange small talk. Daniel is still making a lot of noise but Tim doesn't hear it.

Kate tries to get her father to talk. She saw him struggling earlier and he finally admits he's been feeling a bit unsteady for the past few weeks. He thought it was just a virus and admits it hasn't eased off. She really wants him to see a doctor. He promises to do it tomorrow but she knows her dad and tells him she's talking him to the medical center now. He agrees. He must be worried. He tells her not to say anything to Aidan or Jenny until they know what's going on.

Mary has brought some paperwork in to Number 1 for Tracy. She knocks over a decanter but it doesn't break. She mops up the whisky that spilled and offers to pay for it but he brushes it off. Then he stops short. Something has occurred to him. He realizes he remembers having a drink on the night he was attacked and then going up the stairs and hearing someone open the back door. That's as much as he can remember now.

Bethany comes out and has been patched up. Craig offers her a place to stay at his house but she says she's got somewhere. Nathan comes up behind Craig. I guess she didn't call her mother. Bethany insists she doesn't want to talk to her mother. Nathan assures her he was worried and he thanks Craig for helping and takes her home.

Adam has parked up in the middle of a big, wide, open lot with an overpass at the back. I think it's the same place Nick took Steve a while ago. He lets Daniel out of the boot finally. He comes out fighting and the two men struggle. Adam reveals why he's done this, turning on the recording on his phone. He wants Daniel to confess to hurting Ken.

At the medical centre, Johnny and Kate are with the doctor. He's gone through some of his symptoms, lack of coordination, fatigue, falling. He says he's had a bit of numbness about 6 months ago but it went away. She says she wants to refer him to a neurologist to rule out a few things like Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson's Disease. Oh heck.

Sarah and Gary are waiting for the police still. She's not sure they're going to believe her. Gary says they both know there's something just not right and maybe if they have a word, they'll scare Nathan off. The police have arrived. It's one officer and ... oh my gosh, it's Nathan's friend Neil!!!! He tells Sarah they'll do everything they can to find her!

Daniel insists he's not done anything and assumes Adam is the guilty one and is just trying to cover his tracks. He turns to go but Adam pulls him around and shouts at him, because everyone thinks he's guilty and he's not going to go down for something Daniel did. He is insisting on a confession from Daniel. I don't think he's going to get it, do you?

Now that Adam has released Daniel from the boot of the car, it's time for a showdown. Adam's sure Sinead is the connection after overhearing her row with Ken earlier. Maybe she had an affair with Ken? This suggestion tips Daniel over the edge. He shoves Adam aggressively and shouts at him that Sinead had an abortion.

Back on the street, Sarah and Gary are talking to the police officer, blissfully unaware that he is Nathan's friend Neil Clifton who has raped Bethany. He advises them that there's no evidence that Nathan has broken any law and that Bethany was the one who was smashing the house up. He suggests that rather than arresting her for criminal damage he could go and give her a warning, something unofficial and off the books. That way she'll have a wake-up call without getting a criminal record. Sarah thanks Neil for his help.

We return to Adam and Daniel. Adam is still trying to get Daniel to confess and Daniel realises he's recording the whole thing. He tells Adam that, as a solicitor, he should realise that no court will accept a forced confession and then he seizes his moment. He throws Adam to the ground, jumps into the car and manages to drive away, leaving Adam behind.

Craig is waiting at the bus stop. He's leaving a message on Bethany's phone, checking if she's OK and asking her to call him. Just then Neil comes along – or "sarge" to Craig since he's joined the specials. Neil offers to give him a lift back to the police station.

Sally is getting ready to go to the Underworld party with Gina when she gets a phone message. Her contact at the council may have found a flat for Gina and Leah. Gina flings her arms round Sally and tells her she's the best sister in the world but she catches Sophie's eye over her shoulder. Sophie's look says it all.

Round at the Bistro the party is getting under way and everyone is eagerly awaiting Aidan's announcement. Eva looks ready to burst with excitement when Aidan says that before they start to celebrate the last 20 years he wants to look to the future. But instead of the proposal she was expecting, Aidan introduces the factory's newest clients. "We're going to need that," declares Sean as he grabs a glass of bubbly and hands it to Eva who downs it in one.

Norris is playing up his injury for all he's worth. He bumps into Mary on the doorstep and asks her if she can pop round later to give him a hand with his tea and keep him company whilst Sean is at the party.

Adam arrives back from his adventure with Daniel. He's keen to get inside but Mary waylays him and starts waxing lyrical about smells and how they can evoke memories. Adam looks concerned when Mary mentions the smell of whiskey and tells him that Ken has now remembered that was what he was drinking on the night he was attacked.

Adam goes into number 1 and confronts Ken with the news of Sinead's abortion. Ken looks shocked and gets angry when Adam tries to get him to remember more about what happened. Ken orders him to leave.

Out on the street Adam takes out his phone and dials DC McKinnon's number.

Daniel is sitting in his exam, staring into space with a blank sheet of paper in front of him. Suddenly he gets up and walks out.

The scene shifts to Nathan's flat where Bethany is lying on the bed. Nathan is talking to her and pretending to be concerned. He tells her to forget about what happened with Ian and says the important thing is that she's safe. Nathan goes to answer a knock at the door. It's Neil in his police uniform. Bethany's surprised, she thought he worked in security. Neil tells them that Sarah and Gary want to press charges against Bethany for causing criminal damage. Bethany tells him they were the ones who locked her in. Neil suggests she sits down and tells him what happened.

We return to the Underworld party where Eva looks more than a little tipsy. Suddenly Johnny cuts the music to say a few words. Only Kate knows what he's referring to when he says that, no matter what happens in the future, he wants everyone to know how proud he is to be part of Underworld and he's going to continue to be proud for many years to come. Just as the party gets going again the police arrive to speak to Sinead. Daniel comes in behind, asking what's going on. Sinead leads the police through to the back.

Across the road, Neil takes Bethany in to speak to Sarah and Gary. They're shocked to learn that Bethany wants to press charges. Neil advises them that it's a domestic matter and he doesn't think any of them should be pressing charges. Bethany agrees but says she doesn't want to stay there and asks Neil to take her home to Nathan, leaving Gary to comfort Sarah who's in bits.

Back at the party Daniel is pacing up and down while Sinead is being interviewed and Eva's behaviour is getting steadily more outrageous. Aidan doesn't look too impressed. In the back Sinead is telling the police about the abortion and what Ken said to her that made her decide to go through with it.

Sally has arrived back home with Gina and Leah, having sorted out their housing problem. It's now too late to go to the party so Sally decides to cook them all tea instead. Sophie glowers at Leah who is busy texting a friend. She clearly doesn't trust her.

Norris arrives at the flower shop where Mary is just ending a Skype call with Jude. She has some wonderful news – Jude is moving to the UK. Norris is so pleased he starts jumping up and down with excitement, causing Mary to wonder why he's no longer limping. Norris pulls off his neck brace and comes clean. He admits he exaggerated his injuries somewhat as he was worried Mary was going to move away to be with Jude. He thought if she saw how much he needed her she might not go and tells Mary she's his best friend and he would miss her. As Norris goes to put the kettle on to celebrate Mary tells him that he's her best friend, too.

Back at the party, Eva is now very, very drunk. She tells Sean it may not have happened this time round but by hook or by crook, this time next year she'll have a ring on her finger and be Mrs Connor. Sean hurries out with Eva when she announces she's going to be sick.

Sinead emerges from the back with the police and asks Daniel to take her home. She's very upset and says she told the police about everything, including the abortion, but she thinks they already knew.

Bethany is back at Nathan's. He gives her a big hug and tells her she can now put it all behind her. Bethany is being inundated with texts from Sarah so Nathan offers to take care of it by taking away her phone until she stops sending them. She asks for another hug and Nathan tells her she can have as many as she wants. He adds that she should thank Ian as well. In fact, he suggests, they could go over there right now. He tells Bethany that if she makes things up with Ian, she and Nathan can have the rest of the evening to themselves with a take-away and a film of her choice. Bethany goes off to get ready with a look of shock on her face.

Adam arrives back at the flat to find Daniel waiting for him. Daniel grabs Adam by the collar and says that he knows it was him. He threatens Adam that he can do anything he likes to him but if anything comes back onto Sinead, he'll kill him. "So you're capable of that?" asks Adam. Oh yes, confirms Daniel, nodding.

Wednesday 24 May

Sinead asks Daniel how his exam went, and he eventually reveals that he didn't even do it. He's getting some clothes together and tells her that he's going back to his old flat to paint it, the landlord can't let it out again the way it is. Just then Adam appears, they didn't even know he'd been there all night, and the atmosphere between them all is decidedly frosty.

It's breakfast time at the Sally's house, and it seems that she has found her sister and Leah a lovely flat, and they're going to go and look at it later. Sally offers her sister Auntie Ethel's canteen of cutlery as a housewarming present.

Alya and Kate are sitting with Luke and Zeedan in the cafe, but Kate is quiet and a bit withdrawn. Zeedan asks when Luke can make a start on getting his food van on the road.

Leanne and Nick come in, still bickering over the alibi she gave Peter. She says she did it for Toyah and Simon, not Peter, and she wants to know why he can't see it from her point of view. He points out she's the mother of his son and it's a criminal offence. As they sit down, she asks if he'll go to the Rovers later and get the baby's changing mat.

Sally and Gina are now at the factory and Gina comments that the other workers seem to have had a good time last night, and she's sorry that Sally missed out on it because of her. Sally remarks that Gina would have done the same for her...but Gina doesn't confirm this straight away, and looks guilty. Sally senses that something is up and asks what's wrong. Gina then confesses that Leah has told her she's done a terrible thing, although she can't remember doing any of it. Gina starts weeping. "I'm so sorry, it was me," she says. Sally is puzzled. "What was you?" she asks. "Everything," sobs Gina, and Sally is stunned.

Daniel tells Sinead he's off to work, and tells her not to put the clothes he's set aside into the wash, he'll come back for them after his shift. Sinead suddenly declares that she thinks it was Adam who told the police about her. She tells Daniel she didn't do it, but Ken had made her so angry because he'd talked her into having the abortion by making a big speech about how she was holding Daniel back, he'd never be able to go to Oxford and do all the things he wanted to do. Daniel seems shocked, but says he has to go to work and leaves.

Back in the factory, Sally is asking Gina if she really put a heart in a box and sent it to her own sister, and put a notice of her death in the paper. Gina is adamant that she can't remember doing any of it, not even the phone call from the hospital. "You made the phone call from the hospital? You told me my cancer had come back," says Sally, and Gina tells her that Leah said she heard her make the call. Sally is incredulous, she's sure she would have recognised her sister's voice. Gina tells her again that Leah has said she did it all. Sally gets angry then and asks if she did it because she wasn't there for Gina – although Gina hadn't been there for their mother when she had a stroke and Sally had to go and nurse her through it, while Kevin got off with Natalie Barnes; so Gina contributed to the breakdown of her marriage. Gina sobs and says she's so, so sorry, and wonders if she'll go to prison.

Toyah and Peter are walking down the street on their way to work. Peter is still angry, although Toyah points out that she's said she's sorry. Then she points out that soon he won't have to walk her far to work, just across the landing – and she looks at the pub. "We'll see," says Peter, and walks off.

Daniel steps out of the door of the flat, just as the police get out of their car, it's not Sinead they're looking for, it's Daniel. Adam is standing at the end of the ginnel and stops to watch and listen. They tell Daniel there's a problem with his alibi and ask if they can go somewhere to talk.

Daniel and the police have gone into the Bistro to talk, and Daniel repeats his earlier story that on the night Ken was attacked, he got a tram to the quays and went for a walk. The police woman tells Daniel that they know that the tram ticket he gave them was purchased by a middle-aged lady, and paid for with a credit card. Daniel then says that he chucked his own ticket away, so when he was asked about it earlier, he went back to the tram stop and found one in a bin. The policeman tells him they have that on CCTV, but nothing with Daniel in it on the night of the attack. Then Nick comes over and says Daniel needs to start working, so the police let him go.

Sally is in the cab office talking to Tim about what Gina has told her. She's upset, she says she just left work. She explains that Gina is just going on what Leah has told her, Leah has been keeping it secret. Tim is cross, and points out that all this time they've been in their house, eating their food, and also sat their while Sally found Gina and job and a flat. "Who can't remember putting a heart in a box?" says Tim, and Sally says that she's been told that memory loss is one of the symptoms of being bi-polar. Tim tells her to stay there, and he rushes out.

Sinead has been accosted in the street by Ken, but she hurries away, telling him she doesn't want to talk about it, it's private and embarrassing. She then turns round and tells him that she did not hurt him. He tells her he's not accusing her, he's now worried that she went through a termination because of something he said. "All you were thinking about was yourself," she tells him. "How could you brag about your son when he was shacked up with a dizzy little tart like me?" She says how he went on and on about this being a golden moment of opportunity for Daniel. Now he makes her sick. Ken wonders if Daniel knows this, and she tells him that he does now. She didn't want him to know, but after someone put the police on to her she didn't have a choice. Then she lets herself into her flat and goes in, crying.

Leah lets herself into Sally's house, talking on the phone to someone about a trip to France. She says she doesn't care about Gina, her sister can look after her now, and she refers to Sally as a horrible, stuck-up bitch. When she hangs up, she suddenly notices Tim standing on the stairs, he's been listening. He comes down, carrying a holdall, and asks if she's off to France. Leah says she might be, and so he asks for how long. "What's it to you?" she asks. He points out that she's staying in his house. Leah says she thought it was Sally's. "What, that stuck-up bitch that's just sorted somewhere for you both to live? The one that's going to look after Gina from now on?" asks Tim. Tim then tells her that he thinks it was Leah who did all those things to Sally, that's why Sally didn't recognise her voice on the phone call from the hospital, and why Gina can't remember doing any of it. Just then Leah's phone rings and Tim snatches it up. The name of the caller shows as 'Miss Piggy'. He answers, it's Sally!

Peter and Toyah are in the pub, they tell Sarah that all the money has come through so they can go ahead and buy the pub. Peter then tells Sarah that until the money has changed hands he'd like to keep a lid on it. Nick suddenly appears from the back, come for the changing mat. "Keep a lid on what?" he asks. Although no one tells him directly, Toyah starts talking about celebrating, and her name being above the door. Nick comments that his accountant is bricking it, and Sarah jokes that they'll put him out of business. "Thanks for keeping a lid on it girls," says Peter.

Sally has returned home and she and Tim have confronted Leah. Sally says she doesn't know what's worse, what Leah has done to her or what she's done to Gina by manipulating her and taking advantage of her illness. She tells her to get out of her house, and she and Tim go off to find Gina.

Ken has gone to the flat to talk to Sinead again. He's horrified that she might have acted on his advice. She tells him it's too early to forgive him. He says he's sorry the police came to see her and he's sorry for putting her through it all. As he goes to leave, his eyes fall on the pile of Daniel's clothes that Sinead threw on the floor when she came in upset. They've landed beside a pair of red trainers. "Whose stuff is that?" asks Ken, frowning. Sinead tells him it's Daniel's, and Ken leaves abruptly.

Sally has been in the factory looking for Gina, but comes out telling Tim that she left hours ago and she's not answering her phone. She hopes she hasn't done anything daft. As they walk off down the street, they see Leah sitting outside their house and go over, wondering why she's still there. Leah wants to help them look for Gina, and to explain why she did it.

A worried looking Ken arrives home to find Roy outside his front door, who takes one look at him and asks if he's all right. "Daniel did it!" says Ken, "Daniel pushed me down the stairs!" He goes on to say he recognised the red trainers from that night. He starts to cry. "Daniel attacked me, it was Daniel!"

Friday 26 May

A quick reshuffle of the deck chairs and I am doing double bubble tonight as Margaret is in need of some time to attend to other issues. This is episode 9172, it was written by Chris Fewtrell and the director was John Anderson. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open with Steve talking to Rover (his dog) in the back room of the Rovers about the stories which the walls could tell. Liz asks if he is traumatizing the dog? She tells Steve he has to sell up and settle up with Michelle. Steve does not want to lose their home. Liz says somewhere different and a fresh start. Steve wants what he had - it is their second wedding anniversary.

Meanwhile Rosie and Sophie are explaining to Sally that they were trying to protect her from knowing it was her own family trolling her. Leah moving in was the least worst option (only then thought it was Gina). The girls apologise. Sally wants everyone out looking for Gina. Sally needs some rest the others go out looking and so are the Streetcars drivers.

Brian and Roy entertain with a discussion on making cocoa, the lack of clean teaspoons in the flat being Roy's concern because once again Brian has not done the washing up. Brian's concern revolves around Roy using a knife as a stirring implement - which stirs up strife. Roy is not convinced. Brian says they are having an argument - case proven. Roy is silenced. Roy is off to the cash and carry and will then look in on Ken. Cathy and Gemma are passing and Cathy waves. Roy calls it the ultimate betrayal. Brian thinks Roy is sounding off about him getting closer to Cathy and is pleased to find out that Roy is talking about the Barlow familial disputes. When Cathy emerges Brian does not stop to talk and cycles away. Cathy thought that they were soon to become an item - seems not. Gemma tells her she needs to ask him out.

Tracy and Peter find Ken coming downstairs with kettle in hand trying to replay the night of the incident - but nothing is clear. They mither him and he tells them to leave him alone - he needs to get on.

Sinead and Daniel are discussing the wrong tram ticket which he used to support his alibi. He was lacking a person to vouch for his whereabouts when the attack happened and so tried another approach. Sinead says he will not go to prison providing he does not pull any more daft stunts. Sinead still cannot forgive Ken over the abortion. Daniel assures her that no-one would ever think she was capable. And Ken knows she is innocent. Sinead says they need to draw a line under Ken's interference. And by the way Daniel has to spend some time at his old flat as the landlord is insisting it is decorated before the lease ends. It is apparently on the other side of Manchester and so Sinead will not be with him. They will miss each other.

Steve wanders into the Bistro to find Michelle. He tells Peter has the money to buy the Rovers so she should have her settlement in a few weeks. About time is her response. It is breaking her heart - which just about makes Michelle's day!

Roy thinks Adam is making a brew last too long a time and Tracy and Peter would like him to be long gone as well. Tracy tells him he is stressing Ken out. Peter thinks he should move on and start again. Tracy points out that it works for Peter. Tracy adds he needs to be the bad guy somewhere else. As he leaves Sinead and Daniel come in.

Nick is at the salon telling David that "Barlow" is going to buy the Rovers. Nick does not want Barlow around the Street as a constant reminder of the past. Nick wants Steve to lose the Rovers - but to anyone other than Peter. David does not think anyone cares who owns the Rovers. David tells Nick he should not care either. Revenge is a game for losers says David - he knows it only too well.

Roy is at Ken's who barely slept last night. He is still thinking about what happened. Roy tells him the police should do the investigating. Ken wants Daniel to explain himself. Roy thinks he is putting himself in peril, in grave danger, but Ken is insistent he wants to talk to his son. Ken needs answers.

After the break we resume in the kebab shop where Brian has come looking for Cathy. Gemma makes herself scarce and Cathy uses the opportunity to ask Brian what he is doing later and if they could go out on a date. After a lot of shilly-shallying Brian says no. He does not want to hurt Roy's feelings. Brian thinks Roy would feel awkward. Cathy tries to talk Brian round - but he is on cooking duties tonight. He goes without his kebab.

Rosie and Sophie have not been able to find Gina. Sophie decides to try the homeless shelter. Rosie tells Adam on Maxeem's bench that it is all her fault and explains the story to date. Adam explains why he is persona non grata with the Barlow family. Adam says pretty people like them can always find somewhere to go. Adam reckons he has to leave town.

Tim is eating a cheese butty. Another driver has spotted Gina and she did a runner. She is at the junction of Tile Street and Arkwright Street. Tim is on his way.

Steve ushers Peter and R'Toyota into the back room at the Rovers. There has been a higher offer of £10k extra. perhaps Peter would like to up his offer. Peter reckons Steve is trying a fast one. Nick comes in and assures Peter that he has made the offer. Liz is with him. She does not understand why Nick wants the Rovers - as Peter explains he does not - he merely wants to get at Peter and Steve. Peter cannot match the offer. Nick reduces his offer by £5k. Liz goes off on one! Nick assures them it is not personal - Peter knows it is, he just loves to muck up other people's lives. Nick tells Peter he has lost. They trade insults. Liz and Toyah try to bring the discussion to an end. Nick is thinking of turning it into a nice house. Eliminate the competition and make some money on top. Steve has decided in the light of that he is not selling to Nick. Or Peter.

Sally is on the cab radio as Tim drives around a corner and can see Gina in the distance. Tim says he will see Sal shortly.

Ken calls Daniel and asks him to call in at Number One. It is very important. As he rings off Adam comes in with all of his bags. Whilst Peter and Tracy want Adam to leave town if Ken disagrees then he would stay. Ken asks why Daniel's trainers are peeking out of the top of one of the bags. Adam picks up the distinctive red trainers and confirms they are his. Ken starts preparing a brew - but Adam wants to know why he does not care that his grandson is leaving. Ken says he needs to think and so Adam prepares to go. Ken stops him - he wants to talk. And Ken is stopping him leaving. Ken reveals he asked about the shoes (Ken cannot say the word trainers) because he remembers them - when he was lying on the floor he saw them in close up and watched them as they walked away from him. Ken knows for sure that it was Adam.

Roll credits.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Good evening. This week has largely been in South Devon, visiting Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, partaking of various local restaurants, in the order of partaking: The Oyster Shack, The Winking Prawn (for breakfast), Millbrook Inn, The Seahorse and the Jetty. I have therefore been mainly eating fish! Residents local should consider themselves blessed with such riches and visitors like ourselves probably already know about all of these delights. Anyway back to business this is episode 9173; the writer was Chris Fewtrell; the director was John Anderson. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open in the back room of the Rovers where Peter is asking Steve why he has rejected his offer as well as Nick's. Liz, Nick and Toyah are waiting. Nick insists he wants a deal done there and then and insists to R'Toyota that Leanne is supporting this move as she is thinking of Si and it would be insanity to let Peter near a bar - he would be drinking the drip trays dry by the end of the week. Steve tells Nick no deal - never. Nick calls him a big fool and leaves. Steve tells Peter and Toyah that whilst they were all scrapping like dogs over a bone it made him realise what the pub is worth to him and no-one is going to force him to sell. And Michelle can say what she likes it - it does not change that he did the dirty on her. And she has got a new boyfriend, posh new flat and new job. Steve has two kids to support and that is what he is going to do. Peter is not happy - but he has to go as Ken wants to see him.

Tim has a very aged looking Gina in the cab and is explaining Leah's guilt. Tim tries to convince Gina to return to Sal's but Gina won't - until Sal having heard it all comes on the radio and says that of course she needs her sister. It turns out that they are at the site of Sally and Gina's original home - now a patch of grass - and Sally says Gina must come back. Gina agrees.

Peter arrives at Number One to find Ken and Adam arguing. Ken tells Peter that Adam was responsible. Ken is certain - Adam was wearing the red trainers standing over him at the foot of the stairs. Adam admits he was there but is cut short by Peter who tells Ken to go to Roy's whilst he summons the police. Again Adam admits he did stand over Ken, but he did not hit Ken. Adam tells Peter about collecting cash and finding Ken unconscious. Adam gets heavily pushed and they glower at each other.

In the cafe Roy has to change the menu board and is struggling to put up an umbrella indoors. Brian of course warns him that is bad luck. They disagree over this mumbo-jumbo; this arrant claptrap! Ken comes in and explains what has been happening. He explains that it was indeed Adam who was responsible.

Tim and Gina are home with Sally who is making toast and a brew for Gina served with a huge apology. Gina says she must have done a bad job with bringing up Leah and has not done so well with her own two (so presumably they will appear in some form in the future!!). Sally reckons that her two have not exactly covered themselves in glory at the moment. Sally says she will make sure that Gina will be all right. Tim returns having found Leah outside. Leah admits to making a mistake, claiming it was easier to troll Sally than ask for help because she did not know her and she was always on Granada Reports. Leah departs.

Steve and Cookie (played by Rover) are sitting on Maxeem's bench staring at the Rovers. Leanne pushing Oliver's buggy sees him and reckons the pub will win the staring contest. Turns out that Leanne knows nothing about Nick's offer for the pub. He says he is just not selling. Leanne leaves Oliver with Steve and heads off to find Nick! Oliver is too young for the sight of bloods she asserts.

Adam tells Peter about Ken dumping his clothes on him in hospital - but Peter tells Adam that was his own fault. Adam reckons Ken will always hate him because he is Mike Baldwin's son. DS MacKinnon and her sidekick arrive and take the trainers and Adam into custody. Adam says it is a joke. Ken and Roy arrive with the police. Outside as Adam is put in the car they are watched by Tracy and Daniel. Adam is still proclaiming his innocence! Daniel arrives to comfort Ken.

After the break we are back inside number one and Tracy is offering Ken a whisky which again reminds him of the night in question. He remains confused and believes Adam may be telling the truth. We see Daniel drinking a brew and avoiding the conversation and eye contact with anyone. Peter disagrees with Ken. Tracy tells him not to be upset about Adam's comments on being Mike's son. Peter, Tracy and Daniel discuss looking after Ken for the next few days and Daniel cops for it as he will be decorating his old flat. So Peter and Tracy talk him to taking Ken with him. Daniel is trapped.

Brian has cooked dinner fish pie I think. Brian leads the conversation back to the supernatural - Roy reckons it is a draught around the old warped windows when Brian talks of felling a cold breath on his neck! Then Brian spills some salt so throws some over his left shoulder. To make a point Roy then throws shakes the salt pot in all directions to prove it is not bad luck (including into his brew which then tastes completely disgusting - so it did bring him bad luck which Brian does not spot). Roy is happy to let fates take their course, but the argument continues as Brian wants Roy to accept forces beyond his understanding and anyway Roy did not spill salt - he did it deliberately. Roy goes to a drawer, finds a mirror and having checked it will bring him 7 years bad luck then smashes into the corner of some drawers. He shows the shattered mirror to Brian. Brian is finally silenced.

Back at Number One Tracy is packing Ken's stuff and then they can go. Peter leaves to check on R'Toyota and Ken, with his memory slowly returning looks for a book of poetry he planned to give Daniel - or has he given it to him? Daniel confirms that he has it already but he has not packed it and goes off to the flat to get it.

Along the Street Gina has chased Leah out of the front door. Leah tells Gina she has had her chance! She says that Gina did not defend her in front of Sally after everything she has done for her step-mother. Gina says she brought her up as one of her own. Leah continues to sneer at Gina and continues to refer to Sally as a stuck up cow. Leah predicts Sally will let her down. Gina trusts Sally completely. Leah sighs and goes.

In the Bistro Leanne is merely getting Nick's answering machine. Then he walks in behind her. She wants to know when he was going to talk to her about buying the Rovers. Michelle is behind the bar and is hearing every word. She interrupts and Peter tells her it is none of her business - which of course is not true. Toyah enters and explains Nick tried to gazump Peter's offer. So Steve is not selling any more. Michelle cannot believe it.

Time for the big reveal. Daniel returns to the flat having been shopping. He has bought a new copy of the book Ken gave him. Why? He pulls back the carpet, then the underlay and then lifts some floorboards. He extracts the original copy of the book - with a lot of Ken's blood on one corner. We now know that Daniel struck Ken and left him at the bottom of the stairs. He gets out some tracing paper and he starts making a copy of Ken's inscription to add to the new book he has bought.

Leanne assures R'Toyota that she had no idea that Nick was trying to buy the pub and Nick confirms this is true. Michelle goes to call Steve. Nick tells R'Toyota that he has done her a favour - Peter would be drinking from the drip trays after the first week. Nick would as well - sinking all the profits into a baby that they will never have. Toyah says that it not below the belt it is three floors down and even Leanne looks disgusted. Leanne snaps at her and reckons she is the only sane person left. She lays into Nick for wanting to buy a pub that he does not want with money he has not got, unless he has won the Lottery and not bothered to tell anyone. He was prepared to waste thousands simply to spite Peter. Nick responds that neither Peter nor Steve have a right to be happy. Nick just wanted payback. The two of them get what they want. Toyah calls him a flaming psycho. Michelle cannot get Steve and does her "I'm going to kill him" line as she marches out. Leanne says to stop. They all need to sit down and talk. She goes on that they cannot carry on like this - it is hurting everyone. So they are going to sit down round a table including Steve and Peter. Michelle cannot wait for that - whilst her face tells us it is the last thing she wants. And Leanne is not taking no for an answer as she looks at R'Toyota.

And just to remind us that Tim and Sally are a happy couple we see the two of them sharing a brew and mini-Clubs. Sally carefully thanks him for all he has done in supporting her and resolving matters. He knows that he is Sally's be all and end all - with his face he must be. And Sally is laughing again. Her fears extinguished.

Daniel returns to Number One carrying the unmarked book. Peter and Tracy are also saying bye to Ken (they are only going to the other side of Manchester!). Tracy tells Daniel that Ken is to do no decorating. Daniel says Ken can help with revision and making the tea. Peter tells Daniel no boy racing - but Daniel assures him that Ken is perfectly safe with him (and of course we viewers know something completely different). They get in the car and Ken takes the book from Daniel as they belt up. Peter and Tracy wave as they drive away.

There are then some scenes from next week's post 9pm watershed episodes. But no spoilers here!

Roll credits.

Next week is BGT semi-finals, so transmission is 21:00, Monday to Friday and as usual this gives the team to go for darker stories than usual, expect Ken to find a way of forgiving Daniel before the week is out and for Bethany to be subjected to far worse treatment than anything which has happened so far. And I reckon the chances of Michelle tearing Steve limb from limb to be pretty high. Also it looks like high drama for Nick.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 29 May

Only one episode tonight at the start of a big week of Coronation Street:

Written by Jayne Hollinson Directed by Michael Lacey

Leanne and Nick are not in their happy place this morning. He thinks there's no way they will all be able to sit down and clear the air. She insists so he snaps that he'll be there. Simon comes out after she wheels Oliver out the door. Nick brushes off the row. He sees a voucher for a theme park. Simon says he won it but it's out of date now. Nick feels bad, says he would have taken Simon if he'd have told him. Simon points out that if he had, his father would have been narked and if his dad had taken him, Nick would have been. He certainly feels like he's being pulled both ways, doesn't he?

Ken is still shocked that Adam was ready to let anyone else take the blame. "You think you know somebody" Ken sighs. Indeed. Daniel tries to change the topic as he's working on painting what looks like the railing of the stairs. After all, Ken came with him to get away from all that. Agreed. Ken has noticed the garden is a bit of a mess. There's a rosebush in the garden and Ken wonders who planted it. Daniel says he did. Ken thinks they shouldn't leave it behind, it's apparently flourishing. He then picks up the poetry book but it makes Daniel uncomfortable and Daniel removes it from Ken's hands after he'd read the (forged) inscription out, not wanting to get paint on it.

Nathan is getting Mel to help organize the next "party", 10 punters, plenty of booze and "sweeties" (I reckon he means drugs, not chocolate!) Mel asks which girls he wants attending. He names a string of names. One Mel suggests won't be there because it seems her mother has been mounting a public campaign to find her daughter. Bethany will be the star attraction. Mel doesn't look all that happy. Bethany comes out of the bedroom and is kissed and sent to make coffee. Mel whispers asking if Bethany is ready for "this". Nathan says she'd better be, she's cost enough already. Bethany smiles back at him over her shoulder, oblivious.

Leanne is holding court at the Bistro. Toyah and Peter are there and Steve has rocked up but doesn't think he needs to stay. Wrong. Leanne insists. Nick comes in and brings Simon, saying there's a change of plans. He thinks they should all go on a family outing to the seaside, kids and all. Nick tells Peter that Simon missed out on an outing because he was too scared to ask either of them so this is to make up for it. Peter has the grace to look abashed. Leanne thinks it's a good idea. Bonding and all that.

Anna comes in to work and is greeted by a cheerful Happy Birthday by both Shona and Roy. Sophie had told them it was Anna's 50th. Anna isn't really in a celebratory mood because her daughter still isn't talking to her. Brian comes in and Roy mentions he's tested Brian's superstition about 7 years' bad luck and it's starting to be proven wrong. He's spotted a rare bat that doesn't normally live in the UK and then Cathy rushes in and tells Roy that the cafe has been given a 5 star rating in the Gazette! Good luck indeed! She nabs Brian for avoiding her and tells him they can still be friends, offering him a coffee.

Daniel is painting over the growth marks on the wall. "Daniel 14... Daniel 14 1/2" Ken asks if his childhood was all that bad. He replies that it was up and down until 14 1/2 when it flatlined. Ken can't get over how Denise left him and never explained when she visited. Daniel admits his mother has never visited since she left. He glossed over it because Ken had had his stroke, that's also when he planted the rosebush. Ken notes that Daniel has turned out quite well in spite of it, comparing him favourably to Adam. Daniel looks deep into his unhappy memories now. He suggests that Ken tells the police that he remembers now, and it was just him falling, nobody else involved after all. Yes, lie to the police. Ken is appalled but Daniel suggests that since Ken doesn't remember, it could have been that way. Not good enough, his father says. The courts will make the decision. Daniel gets angry and shouts that Adam has forgiven him for ignoring him for most of his life. Ken shouts back that it's no excuse, using a sob story to allow him to attack him and leave him for dead. Daniel calls Ken controlling and selfish, not caring and sensitive like he pretends. Daniel doesn't expand on the "controlling" remark and Ken decides to go for a walk.

Johnny comes into the cafe where Kate is waiting. He had to make an excuse to get out of shopping with Jenny and doesn't want Kate to go with him for the tests. He'll go on his own and promises to tell her everything when he gets back. Brian and Cathy are still having coffee and he's talking about superstitions. David brings his empty cup to the counter and asks Shona if she'd be a hair model for him. She reluctantly agrees. David leaves and Anna asks if anything is going on between she and David. Don't be daft, Shona says, looking embarrassed.

We're at the beach now, (Blackpool beach) with Nick chasing Simon and the football. The rest of the adults are walking along the beach. Steve has agreed that they do all need to call a truce and the two men join Nick with the football. Leanne and Toyah discuss Nick's visible scowl and Leanne assures her sister that things will get sorted out but admits she'll leave him if it doesn't. She won't have her kids growing up in a war zone. Peter and Nick scuffle over the ball and get into an argument over a perceived foul. Simon gives up and walks away. Peter gets angry and Nick accuses him of overreacting. Leanne watches.

Daniel is scraping paint off a windowsill and the knife slips and cuts his thumb. Outside, Ken walks up to the sorry looking rose bush. Back inside, Daniel is washing his thumb but seems to be cutting himself worse by pushing his finger into the cut. Ken starts digging around the rose bush, intent on uprooting it to talk with them. Ken's shovel hits something as blood drips into the bathroom sink. Daniel looks dreadful, almost dazed. After the break, Ken has unearthed a small wooden box full of keepsakes. A bracelet, a big chunky ring, a bottle of pills.

Shona teases Craig about being a police constable. Craig says it's not always easy separating the constable with the friend. Bethany, Shona suggests. Craig says that as a mate, he'd go round to Bethany and warn her off her boyfriend but as a "special" (constable) he can't. Shona knows Bethany wouldn't thank him for it. He agrees and says he wishes she'd never gone near that tanning salon. Hear that? that's the sound of a lot of pennies dropping as Shona realizes who Bethany's Nathan is and she takes off her pinny to go on her break, anxious to get out the door. Sinead comes in the door to get some takeaway shepherd's pie. Anna mentions Adam's arrest. Chesney, sitting over at one of the tables with Craig, had surmised the culprit was Daniel due to his temper. Sinead isn't happy to hear him say that and mentions Adam tried to pin it on Daniel, too.

Nathan tells Bethany she'll wow the guests tonight. She suggests they go somewhere on their own but he's not about to do that, but offers to take her somewhere next week, just the two of them. He hands her a little paper with powder inside, good stuff he promises. She doesn't want to indulge. He offers her a drink instead. He goes to pour it and adds the powder to the glass.

Ken is looking through the box he found. There's an old perfume bottle and a photo with broken glass. Daniel's phone buzzes beside him and Sinead's photo shows on the screen. Daniel comes into the room and freezes when he sees what Ken is doing. Ken admits he found it under the rose bush. Daniel is furious. Ken wants to know why he buried it and what the pills are. Daniel snatches it from Ken's hands furiously, shouting it's none of his business. Ken looks wary and asks what really happened to his mother.

Nathan comes into the salon where Shona is waiting. He's surprised to see her and wonders if she's there to pay her debt. Shona insists she doesn't owe him anything and warns him to stay away from Bethany.

At the beach, Simon goes up to the promenade to get some candy floss. Leanne gives Nick an earful for upsetting Simon. Nick, predictably, blames Peter. That doesn't wash. She accuses him of being the problem. Nick strides off and Steve takes the baby. Nick looks over the beach and is joined by Peter who knows that the day is really about him trying to get brownie points with Leanne but it's not going well. Peter asks him why he tried to take the pub from under him. Nick mutters that Leanne will go to any length for Peter who realizes Nick is upset that she gave him an alibi. He reminds Nick that Leanne did it for Simon. Nick smirks, and he tells Peter he saw Peter miles away sitting on his car smoking. Peter realizes Nick could have given him an alibi all along and Leanne has come up behind them and overheard. She confronts Nick with it.

Daniel is upset, tearful and looking at the box contents. He accuses Ken of blaming him and saying Denise was the victim but it's the other way around. She made his life hell and he wanted it to stop. Ken asks what happened. Daniel insists she went away but realizes Ken doesn't believe him. Daniel brings up Ken and Sinead's discussion that caused Sinead to decide to go through with the abortion. He accuses his father of destroying his chance to have his own family. Ken freezes. What Daniel just said, Ken remembers him saying at the top of the stairs. It was you! Daniel nods. Ken moves towards the door but is shoved back on a sofa. Daniel refuses to let his father go because he knows Ken will go to the police and he'll lose Sinead. He moves a heavy bookshelf in front of the door and says "it ends here"

As Daniel falls apart he gives his father some home truths: Ken's pretentious views are what drove Sinead to have an abortion. Daniel knows that's why she did it because she quoted Ken's words back at him.

Meanwhile relationships are no better down at the beach where Nick hangs his head in shame as Leanne lays in to him for keeping quiet when, all along, he could have given Peter an alibi. Toyah joins in, saying that in Nick's bitter, insane mind he believes Peter would be better off in prison, away from Leanne.

We return to Daniel who is now telling Ken that he wanted to live his life vicariously through his Oxbridge son because, despite his hopes and ambitions, Ken's life has been an abject failure. Ken shouts he's sorry. Speaking quickly, he offers to change his story and says he'll tell the police he now remembers losing his balance and hitting his head and that he was alone. Daniel shakes his head in disbelief– when Ken thought Adam had done it he said it was unforgivable, so what's changed his mind? Why should Daniel trust him not to hand him in? Then he sees Ken looking at the tin he dug up in the garden and realises with horror that Ken thinks Daniel killed his own mother. "Well, did you?" asks Ken.

Now we go to the tanning salon where Shona is begging Nathan to let Bethany go while he pretends to look indifferent and taps away on his phone. He wonders why Shona cares so much about her then tells her he's dumped Bethany. "But seeing as you're here ..." begins Nathan as he goes to grab her. Shona leaps back like a scalded cat and tells him not to touch her. She rushes out of the door and we see that Nathan has just sent a text message to someone, giving a description of Shona.

We go back to Daniel and Ken. Daniel is sitting in the corner, head in his hands as Ken tries to talk to him and find out what happened. In a very emotional scene Daniel says that he sometimes hated his mother when there was no food or the power was cut off but that was after ... "She was my mum, why would you think that I ...?" Daniel asks, unable to finish the sentence. He admits that after she left he wished she was dead, perhaps because of an accident or cancer because then it would make sense, why she didn't come back. Daniel points to the tin and says he buried it because he needed her to be gone. The very worst thing he could think of was that she left him and chose to stay away.

At the beach, everyone else has walked away while Leanne continues to argue with Nick. He simply cannot get over his jealousy and, however much Leanne tries to reason with him, it seems like he never will. Finally she reaches the end of her tether and tells Nick that, whether he likes it or not, Steve and Peter are Oliver and Simon's dads but it's Nick she wants to build a family with. At least she thought she did, she adds, but it's not Peter or Steve she wants to stay away from her boys, it's you she says, pointing at Nick and she walks off to join the others, leaving Nick standing on his own.

In the Rovers Brian is feeling lovesick. He thinks he's being cryptic as he talks to Liz but she knows he's pining after Cathy. She can't see what the problem is and Brian admits she's not the first person to tell him that. "Carpe Diem!" declares Brian, as he flies in the face of his superstitions and puts up his umbrella before heading out of the door. Meanwhile Chesney's talking to Fiz about Sinead. As he mentions Daniel's name it triggers a thought and he grabs his coat and leaves.

Out in the street it's pouring with rain. Brian gives a resigned sigh as a van drives through a large puddle, soaking his trousers.

Sinead answers her door intercom to Chesney. He refuses her invitation to come in but he wants to say something about Daniel. He tells her it's not jealousy but warns Sinead to watch him.

Meanwhile Daniel and Ken are still talking. Ken thinks Denise's behaviour was despicable but Daniel tells Ken it was all his fault. After all, explains Daniel, Ken was the reason she had the breakdown and how could she stay when Daniel reminded her so much of him? And then when he was ready to move on and had found someone he loved, Ken went and ruined it all for him again. Ken reacts angrily at Daniel for blaming Ken for everything that's going wrong in his life. And what's he going to do now, shouts Ken, finish him off? Daniel looks down at the knife lying on the floor just as there's a knock on the door. "Help!" yells Ken. "Call the police!" The door is forced open by ... could it be? ....

"No, no no, no, no ...!" yells Daniel. "Denise!" exclaims Ken as Daniel's mother pushes her way inside.

We leave this drama to return to the beach where any angry Leanne tells Peter, Toyah and Steve that they're leaving. Steve asks if Nick will be joining them. Leanne replies she doesn't know and she doesn't care. Peter goes off in search of Nick and tells Toyah to make sure Leanne gets home.

In the salon David's leaving a series of messages for Shona, wondering if she's coming in for her free hair cut.

We see Shona in a side alley, trying to get a signal on her phone. She dials 999 and asks for the police just as she's grabbed from behind by two thugs. As this episode was shown after the 9 o'clock watershed they don't hold back from a graphic scene of beating her up. Meanwhile her phone is lying nearby, presumably picking up the whole event.

Sinead turns up on Chesney's doorstep. She's angry at him for bad mouthing Daniel but she's also worried as she keeps ringing and he hasn't returned her calls. She's decided to go over to his house. In that case, says Chesney, he'll get his coat.

Daniel, meanwhile, has locked himself in the bathroom and he's in the middle of a massive panic attack. "What's got into him?" Denise asks Ken, as though she'd only left him for five minutes while she popped out to buy a pint of milk. An incredulous Ken tells her she knows full well what's happened and adds that Daniel has the knife in there with him.

We go back to the beach where Steve is trying to stop Peter and Nick having a fight. But then Nick starts venting his anger at Steve and Peter is the one who has to intervene. Peter is so angry with Nick he points out towards the sea and suggests he should just walk that way and keep going and then Simon, Leanne and Oliver would all be better off without him. Peter storms off, leaving Nick looking out at the sea.

Daniel is having a panic attack in the bathroom and trembling over the sink with the knife close at hand while Ken and Denise call through the door to him, trying to talk him down.

The scene moves to Roy's Rolls where Kate meets up with her father. He tells her he's fine. He'll know for sure in a couple of weeks but the bloke doing the scan seemed to think it all looked OK but the way Johnny's behaving implies that he's not telling the whole story, Did he even go for the scan at all?

Brian goes into the cafe and has words with Roy and Liz. He's not going to listen to their advice any more about ignoring superstitions after his run of bad luck.

We see Shona lying on the pavement. She's still unconscious and looks in a bad way.

She's not the only one looking in a bad way. Daniel is slumped over the basin, staring at the knife while Ken calls to him again from outside.

Back at the beach Nick starts striding purposefully across the sand and reaches a line of water. As he starts to cross his feet get stuck and the more he tries to free them, the worse it becomes. "Help!" he cries but as the camera pans away we see he's all alone ...

Wednesday 31 May

We open with Nick waist deep in water, unable to free himself. He pulls his phone out of his pocket, but of course it's wet and won't work. As he sinks deeper he sees someone running past on the bank, and shouts for help, but she is wearing headphones and listening to music and doesn't hear.

Daniel has locked himself in the bathroom, obviously distressed, staring at a Stanley knife he's holding over the bath. Ken calls to him to open the door, telling him his mother is going to leave them to talk. Denise, however, has other ideas and tells him she's going nowhere.

Nathan is in the kitchen of his flat when Bethany comes out of the bedroom wearing a new dress that he's bought her. Just then Mel comes in and hands her a package that the postman has just delivered. Bethany opens it to find a gift wrapped box that she knows is from her mum, she's seen the paper at home, so she throws it straight in the bin. Nathan then takes the engagement ring off her finger, saying he wouldn't want their guests to get jealous of what they have. Bethany then wonders if she should take her necklace off as well, but realises she must have left it by the bed. "Well, you'll be in there later, won't you," says Nathan.

We then see Shona, lying unconscious and bleeding beside a bin somewhere.

Kathy and Gemma are standing outside the kebab shop when Brian comes along. When he's walked on Gemma remarks that Brian obviously fancies Kathy, which seems to please her.

Peter and Steve are walking around leaving messages on Nick's phone.

Ken and Denise are still outside the bathroom door. Ken tells her he's heard Daniel crying, and she wants to know what's going on. Ken gets cross then, asking how she can dare to ask for explanations, after she'd disappeared without trace, no phone call or letters. She tells him she had a breakdown. "For seven years?" asks Ken. She tells him she thought Daniel was better off without him, she believed it then and she believes it now. She tells him that as time went on it was easier to stay away, but now she felt she had to see Daniel, to make sure he was ok. "He's far from ok," snarls Ken. Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Daniel is sitting on the floor, hugging his knees and sobbing.

Chesney is up the in the flat with Sinead. While he is talking on the phone in the hall, she spills her mug of tea onto the carpet by the table. Getting down to mop it up she discovers some loose floorboards and, lifting them, discovers a large, bloodstained book hidden underneath. Just as she's looking at it, Chesney comes back into the room. "What's that?" he asks.

Over in the bistro, Simon is annoyed because Leanne won't let him have chips from the chippy. Toyah tries to persuade her to let him go, then they can have a glass of wine. "I'm not talking about Nick," snaps Leanne. "Did I say it was to talk about Nick?" asks Toyah.

In the cafe, Tyrone hears Anna on the phone to Faye, saying that Roy has given her the afternoon off. He quickly tells Kevin and they go over to Erica and ask her to take Anna for a drink when she's finished work. They want her away from the house for a few hours to sort out her surprise 50th party.

Craig and Kirk are also in the cafe, Craig is worried about Bethany's situation, but apparently his sergeant, (who just happens to be Neil) has told him not to let his imagination run away with him.

Steve and Peter are walking along beside the water, when suddenly Steve spots Nick in the water, now almost up to his chin. Steve rushes off to call the coastguard.

By now, the water is almost in Nick's mouth, Peter is trying to keep him fighting, but Nick seems to be giving in. He tells Peter to tell Oliver and Leanne that he loves them. Peter keeps shouting at him to go on fighting.

Back at the flat, Sinead has shoved the book back and replaced the floorboards. Chesney tells her she has to show it to the police, it might not be Daniel, it could have been Adam who hid it there. Sinead knows it was Daniel because of the inscription in the book. Ken said it to her, and she said it to Daniel when she told him about the abortion. She feels it's her fault too as Daniel was devastated when she got rid of the baby. She begs Chesney to say nothing to anyone.

Outside the kebab shop, Gemma is up a ladder getting a dead magpie down from above the shop sign. Cathy is at the foot of the ladder when Brian comes along. Cathy tries to get him to put his superstitions aside and walk under the ladder. Then she takes hold of him and kisses him!

Chesney is marching down the Street, followed by Sinead who wants to know what he's planning to do. He turns and tells her he'll do nothing, because that's what she's asked him to do, but he thinks she's crazy to let Daniel walk free when he's tried to kill his own dad.

Back at the beach, Peter is still urging Nick to keep his head up, telling him the coastguard will be there any minute. Nick gasps at him to tell Leanne he's sorry and asks him to look after her. Peter tells him it's Toyah he loves, he doesn't want Leanne. Just as Nick seems to be going under we hear the sirens approaching.

Craig is walking along when he sees Shona lying on the ground. He rushes forward to her, and then calls an ambulance.

At Nathan's flat, a party is in full swing. Nathan fetches Bethany a drink and tips some white powder into it, watched by a smiling Mel. A young girl comes out of the bedroom with an older man, and Bethany notices that she's wearing her necklace and tries to snatch it back, saying that Nathan gave it to her. "Nathan gives them to all of us, psycho," snaps the girl, pushing Bethany away. Bethany starts shouting and one of the men at the party pulls her away. Nathan rushes over and gets hold of Bethany and shoves her out of the door.

Nick has been rescued from the water and is brought to dry land.

Daniel opens the bathroom door and staggers out, crying and shaking, and calling for his mum, although he won't let her touch him. Ken says he'll take him home, he needs help, not judgement. Daniel turns to Denise. "I waited, and you never came home," he says, "how could you do that?" She tells him she doesn't know, but she never stopped loving him. Just then there's a knock on the door, it's the police. Daniel tells them it was him, he did it. "No!" shouts Ken, but the policewoman arrests Daniel anyway.
