2016

Friday 2 December

We begin in the street where Aidan, Kate and Eva talk about Caz. Aidan's determined to do something about her, even though Kate and then Eva urge him to leave things to the police.

Sally's also in the street, with Tim and Fay. She's looking forward to a bucolic summer on the allotment and thinks she might come down at lunchtime today to check how Tim's digging is going. But Tim tells her he needs to concentrate on the task.

Crossing towards Norris's house are Norris and Brian, wheeling Brian's bike with the oldest luggage I've seen in a while. It all seems very heavy and Norris wonders whether Sean will be willing to give up any of his wardrobe space. He warns Brian off using any of Sean's toiletries, as well. Sean hates that.

As Tim goes off towards the allotment and Sal goes to work, she asks Alya how the wedding went. Alya snaps that she doesn't know. Sally points out that Zeedan's her brother (No! Really?) which only enrages Alya some more.

The newlyweds are in Yasmeen's front room and Rana thinks they should do something like go to a spa for the day. Zeedan says he can't do that. He can't relax while his grandmother's jewellery is in some pawn shop. Rana realises where her bride-gift came from and determines to get it back. Zeedan doesn't think they'll be able to, because the pawn shops sell at a profit but they agree they should try to get some of it back.

At Dev's, Mary stomps over to where Dev's just put a fork into the toaster. She talks to Erica and Dev about the number of beauty queens who have died tragic deaths. Away from Dev, Erica offers to go with Mary to see the doctor about the lump.

In Maria's flat, Aidan starts to search, insisting to Kate that there must be some kind of clue the police have overlooked. Kate agrees to help search and he hands her the folder of paperwork relating to the accounts in Maria's name and the receipts for the stuff Caz bought in London. Kate starts to look through it and her eyes widen as she looks at one piece of paper. In the background, Aidan's talking about Caz as "that nut job" and Kate leaps up and shouts at him to stop talking about Caz like that. Kate says she's still got feelings for Caz.

The archaeology students are on the allotment. It's clear they know little about excavating a site, but no matter. Tim's happy. Though not so much when Roy comes along and starts to take too much of an interest in what's going on. Tim distracts him by guiding Roy back to his own allotment and asks for rhubarb-growing tips.

In the medical centre waiting room Mary is still very maudlin but not quite as stompy (she's sitting down). Erica tries to tell her everything will be OK.

Kate tells Aidan she's never loved anyone the way she loves Caz. Aidan's annoyed and goes off. We see that Caz is watching the whole thing.

The doctor tells Mary she's going to be fine. Mary seems almost annoyed by this. She refuses to believe the doctor and the doctor suggests sending her for a scan just to put her mind at rest.

Back in the flat, Kate gets a text from an unknown number asking if she's in the flat. It turns out that it's Caz. Kate texts back asking where she is just as Caz lets herself in the door.

Kate asks Caz how she could have done this - how could she let Kate think she was dead? Caz tells her it's her own fault for rejecting Caz. "It was never Maria I wanted, it was always you," she says. Kate says she wants Caz, too. Caz hesitates before believing her and says she's risked everything to come back for Kate. She admits she's been watching and reaches up to retrieve the camera. Behind her back, Kate picks up her phone. In the pub, Aidan ignores his phone. Caz pleads with Kate to run away and Kate says she has to be sure she's doing the right thing.

Tyrone, Freddie, Brian and Norris are in a booth in the Rovers. Norris and Brian are going to get a takeaway and Brian says Freddie's welcome to come and eat with them. Norris hurriedly points out he'll be paying for his own fish and chips. Tyrone tells Freddie he can come back and be a lodger at theirs any time he likes.

Aidan's got a voicemail message from Kate. Eva urges him to listen to it. I've watched this episode twice and still don't get how Kate did that. I thought she sent a text first but maybe she just called Aidan and left the line open.

Caz understands the sacrifice Kate will be making for her. She'll be giving up her home, her family and her job. She leans in to kiss Kate, who suddenly blurts out that Aidan is on his way. Caz pushes her down on the sofa and leaps on her pulling her hair and hitting her. Aidan and Eva burst through the door and Aidan grabs Caz.

Mary and Erica discuss the visit to the medical centre. Erica thinks they should celebrate. "What is there to celebrate?" Mary asks in a horrified voice. "I've just been referred for a scan!"

As the police take away Caz, Kate tells them she's got the CCTV camera on her. Kate's in tears. She can't believe she believed Maria could kill Caz. How's she ever going to make it up to Maria and Liam?

Rana and Zeedan are back from town. They have miraculously found the pawn shop where Yasmeen sold her jewellery and have bought back the jewellery which came from her mother. Rana has used the bride-gift money. Zeedan says Yasmeen can pay them back in babysitting and nappy-changing eventually. Yasmeen in thrilled he's talking about babies already. Rana - less so.

Tim's pleased and more than a bit smug with the look of the newly-dug allotment.

Kate, Eva and Aidan are at the Bistro. Eva wants to know how Kate knew Caz was watching, Kate says she recognised the name of the shop where Caz bought the equipment. She'd used it before to play a practical joke on an Army colleague.

Tim's in the Rovers, swigging back pints which he deserves because he's been working so hard. Sally's surprised and pleased to hear he's finished the digging. Then Roy ruins things by asking how the big dig with the archaeology students went. Erica asks Norris whether he thinks Mary's been acting strangely lately. No more than usually, he says.

Rana tells the doctor at the medical centre she's called in to pick up a book she left there. But she goes straight for the drugs cabinet, picks out a couple of packets and puts them into her bag before leaving again.

Aidan brings Maria home and stops outside her flat. She's a bit flat because she's still got the court case about her fake marriage to go. He urges her to just concentrate on the here and now. She goes to kiss him before she gets out of the car and there's a wee bit of snogging before Eva comes out of the flat to welcome Maria home. As Eva and Maria go into the flat, Maria and Aidan make eye contact. Hmmm. . .

Monday 5 December

Written by Mark Burt Directed by Tim Finn

Tracy is allowing Mary to take the morning off to see to medical matters. She then asks Adam who is standing there if he'll fill in but he's not so inclined. Across the road, Kate and Maria encounter each other. Kate remarks that Maria is in court later to enter her plea (on the immigration marriage charge). Kate begins an attempt to apologize but is given short shrift by Maria. Adam has been watching and expresses his attraction for the hair stylist. Tracy warns him off, as Maria is damaged goods. She lists just some of Maria's escapades such as facing prison for illegally marrying a gay Argentinean hairdresser, only discovered when a psychopathic lesbian lodger tried to frame her for murder. He wasn't that inclined to believe Tracy but decides that "scumbag" Liam's death did a number on her. Tracy reckons Maria was always a bunny boiler. But Adam continues to keep watch in Maria's direction anyway, still intrigued apparently.

Daniel comes into Number 1, while on the phone having a contentious call. He wasn't going to tell Peter and Ken what it was about but they insist. His landlord wants him out today due to three months of non rent payment. (fair enough, really). Peter and Ken offer to go with him to help him clear out his things.

Cathy notices a rash on Roy's neck. Is he allergic to something? Perhaps but Cathy suggests it could be stress related but putting it down to worry over Anna. She's in her own little world, isn't she? Alex brings a message from his mother, for them to expect a special delivery that evening at 5. No word on what it is. Typical Nessa. At one of the tables, Eva is trying to cheer up Maria over the plea hearing. Eva doesn't think it was such a serious crime, since it was done in the face of true love (Pablo and his fella, that is). Maria mutters that she makes her sound like a Disney Princess. Eva mentions that Aidan is a bit off today and then offers to go with her to court. Maria thanks her but says she'll be fine with Kirk.

Mary is feeling rather defeatist and tells Erica she's making a bucket list. Erica offers that the doctor was quite optimistic and the scan will show she's right, perhaps this is all in Mary's head. Wrong thing to say. Mary snaps at her, she knows her body and is sure she has cancer.

Rana surreptitiously takes a pill, having nipped into an empty house to do it. Alya comes in the door, there to get some of her things while Rana admits she's moving her things in. The friends hug. Alya congratulates her on the wedding. Rana's phone buzzes a reminder for her to get to work. She invites Alya for a coffee after work.

Aidan comes into the office where Eva has been using the computer to order his Christmas gift. She's excited about the gift and Christmas in general which he notes. What's not to love? She tells him he's on tree decorating duty tonight as she slips back out the door to the factory floor. His phone alerts him to a text from Maria, which says they need to talk. Hmm..

Leanne approaches Peter who's having a cig while waiting for Ken and Daniel I think. She informs him that Simon's last counseling session is later today. Nick joins them with interjections of sarcasm as per usual (he's a thoroughly dislikable character, isn't he?). Leanne suggests that both Peter and Leanne sit in on the last session. Peter is surprised but promises to be there and thanks her for letting him know. Nick looks faintly disgusted as she says she'll text him the details later.

Aidan comes to Maria's flat. She tells him the hearing is at 3 and then gets down to what she wanted to talk to him about, that kiss. She feels guilty after Eva has been so good to her but admits she did want more. She also admits that even though she's looking at a possible year in prison she can only think about him. He leans forward and they kiss.

Norris is talking to Erica about Mary. He's really worried about Mary. When they hear her keys in the door, they stop talking. They wait for the news, Mary was given the all clear. They are all relieved but she seems like she's still fretting. She doesn't want to partake in the celebrations they're offering. She's still overwhelmed with a lot of feelings and tells them they can't really understand. She goes upstairs, leaving them baffled.

Aidan and Maria are still snogging. He apologizes but she's not bothered. He asks if Kirk would babysit Liam. He's got meetings at a hotel in town and maybe she could meet him there later. She's overwhelmed and realizes it's really happening. She asks him when he's going to tell Eva about them and it all goes pear shaped when he utters those three little words 'Tell Eva what?' Turns out she didn't realize he had no intention of breaking up with Eva, he was just looking for a bit on the side. He's even surprised she didn't realize it was always going to be just an affair. Finding out he's a love rat has hurt her and she throws him out, furious at him and at herself for falling for it.

After the break, she and Kirk head out for the court. Eva and Kate approach, Eva insisting she's coming with her friend. Kate has come to wish her good luck. Maria blames her situation on Kate for bringing Caz there in the first place. Kate does apologize and Maria admits she doesn't hate Kate as much as she hates herself (a loaded statement that we viewers know means a lot more). Maria brushes Kate off and tells Kate there's something wrong with her, something that would attract a nutter like Caz and then she gets in the taxi with the others.

Nick and Leanne are bickering about Peter in the Bistro. He doesn't see how Peter's presence at the session with Simon is going to be helpful at this stage in the process. She's made her decision, she snaps, and that's that. Zeedan comes out of the kitchen, yawning prompting Nick to tease the newlywed for possible reasons for lost sleep. He asks after the pitter patter of tiny spatulas just as Rana walks through the door. Rana tells Zeedan she is going for coffee with Alya later and wants him to join them. He's not enthusiastic but she insists. He reluctantly agrees.

Peter, Ken and Daniel arrive at the flat which is depressing and cheerless. It may be a "flat" but it's got an upstairs where Daniel heads after insisting the ancient video game console be packed up to keep. Ken and Peter look around, Ken upset at where his son has been living.

Erica talks to Dev about Mary's bizarre behaviour. He doesn't think it's overly bizarre for Mary. Mary comes downstairs, on her way to the Rovers, not hungry for tea. Erica offers to join her but the offer is declined. She leaves. Erica is concerned but Dev seems to be willing to let Mary deal with it in her own way. Erica spots Mary's papers on the table and curiosity gets the better of her. Erica opens the folder which is filled with newspaper clippings, maps and notes. One name stands out, Maureen Nuttall. Who might that be?

Maria, Eva and Kirk are back from court and are in the cafe with the solicitor. He's suggesting they can get leniency at the sentencing but a defeatist Maria attempts to fire him since she can't afford to pay. Eva reminds her that Aidan is paying but she doesn't think it's fair. Eva and Kirk assure her they all want to help and she should let Aidan do his bit. Over at the counter, Alex looks distracted. It is past 5 when the special delivery should have been there. He takes Alya's coffee over to her, starting when someone else comes through the door but it's only Rana and Zeedan who join Alya.

Peter picks up the stack of post and sees a letter that was addressed to Denise but which has been returned unopened. What's that all about? He continues to pack a box. Ken comes in and is really upset at how Denise abandoned her son. Peter tries to get him to calm down and asks him to wait in the car. He goes, agreeing he should rest a bit. Daniel comes into the room with another box. He looks around and agrees he's got everything. Peter offers to leave him alone for a few minutes to "say goodbye". He takes the boxes and we see Daniel looking at little "growth" marks on the door frame, evidence of his life. The top few are aged 12, 14 and, I think, 15 where they stop, just about the time his mother left. He looks at them emotionally.

Back to the cafe, Rana is laughing about an uncle that's donated cooking lessons for her. When Rana says the uncle would have liked to have been at the wedding, Alya's statement agreeing sets Zeedan off. They bicker. Alya wonders when he and Gran are going to move on, "When you move away" he snaps and leaves. Rana tries to apologize for him but in the end, goes after him because he's her husband. She's definitely caught in the middle.

The delivery arrives, it's Nessa in the flesh. Roy, Cathy and Alex are all stunned. Nessa is pleased with her grand entrance. She grabs Cathy in a bear hug.

Kirk is taking Liam for the night because Maria just wants to be on her own.

Aidan arrives at the hotel bar to find Eva. He'd called her to come meet him and she certainly dressed for the event in a very low cut and tight red dress. He asks how Maria got on and then apologizes for the last minute invitation. She doesn't mind in the least. Champagne is presented to them and they toast a wonderful night.

Back at the flat, Maria picks up the phone and books a cab to the hotel where Aidan and Eva are.

Tonight's second episode opens with Aidan and Eva clinking glasses of Champagne at the posh hotel. While Eva goes off to powder her nose Maria walks through the door with perfect timing. She tells Aidan she's changed her mind. Aidan will have some explaining to do.

Tracy arrives in the Bistro to find Ken is treating Peter and Daniel to dinner. Ken tells Daniel he'll need to let his mother know where he's staying. He offers to speak to her for him but Daniel promises he'll do it.

Back at the hotel Eva laughs at the amazing coincidence that Maria has turned up to meet her mate at the same place as them. Aidan doesn't look happy when Eva insists Maria joins them for a drink.

Dev and Erica are trying to solve the mystery of what's going on with Mary as they sift through her pile of papers. They seem to have something to do with a woman called Maureen.

In the cafe Nessa wastes no time in making her presence felt. Brian comes in and his eyes light up as he spots the new arrival. There's barely time to draw breath before Nessa has invited Brian to join her in a beverage and whipped a bottle of Scotch out of her bag.

We return to the hotel where Maria is telling Eva and Aidan that it looks as though she may be in prison by Christmas. Eva promises they'll make sure Liam is looked after. While Eva leaves to take a call from Leanne Maria takes the opportunity to tell Aidan exactly what she thinks of him, with a slap round the face for good measure, before stalking out of the restaurant. Aidan barely has time to pull himself together before Eva returns.

Erica goes into the Rovers where Mary is on her third drink but when she tries to talk to her about what's going on Mary flies off the handle and tells her to leave her alone.

Sally and Sinead have been working late. Discovering they're both on their own for the evening they decide to go to the Rovers for a drink. They invite Alya to join them but she turns them down and says she has to finish something off.

The Barlows have finished their meal in the Bistro. Peter gets Tracy to walk Ken home, leaving him the chance to talk to Daniel on his own. Peter wants to know what's really going on. Daniel can't get his story straight. When they went to the flat it looked like a squat and there were a pile of unopened letters addressed to Denise. Peter asks when Daniel last saw his mum and he finally admits that it was the day she walked out … six years ago.

Maria arrives back on the street. As if her evening couldn't get any worse the heel snaps off her shoe. Along comes Adam who seizes on the opportunity to rescue a damsel in distress and invites Maria to join him for a drink in the Rovers.

Peter can't believe that Daniel has kept the secret about his mother disappearing for so long but it seems he managed it somehow. Daniel tells Peter it's amazing what you can get away with using a forged signature and a fake email address. Peter tells Daniel it's time he came clean and they need to contact the police but Daniel is worried about the effect this could have on Ken's health if they tell him.

Eva's all set to enjoy her romantic night away but Aidan can't face it. He claims to have a terrible headache and needs to go home. He promises to make it up to her.

Maria's ready to go home after one drink with Adam but after a quick bit of persuading she agrees to stay for one more.

Nessa and Brian are still drinking Scotch but now they're upstairs in the flat with Roy, Cathy and Alex. While they flirt with each other on the sofa, Cathy takes out her frustration on a large packet of crisps. Brian notices Roy appears distracted and asks if everything is alright.

Meanwhile round at Dev's Erica finds Mary in the backyard burning her papers. Erica has worked out that Maureen must be Mary's mother but notes that Mary never talks about her. She tries to delve deeper but Mary claims she's fine and refuses to say any more and asks to be left alone.

Back in the Rovers the drinks are starting to loosen Maria's tongue as she reels of her list of past conquests to Adam. Tracy comes in and wonders aloud why every time she she's Maria with a bloke she hears the theme tune from Jaws in her head.

Across the room Alya is having a drink with Kate. She mentions it isn't easy sleeping on Fiz and Ty's sofa. As luck would have it, Kate has a spare room in her flat and tells Alya she could do with some company.

Peter arrives home to find Ken on his own. He's on the point of telling him about Denise disappearing but thinks better of it when Ken says he feels partly to blame for Daniel's situation. Ken asks Peter to promise to make Daniel feel part of the family before taking himself off to bed.

Kate and Alya are now the best of mates as they walk arm in arm up the street together. Alya asks Kate to go on ahead so she can stop to speak to Zee. He starts to walk away but Alya grabs his arm and says she'll just keep trying. Despite what he may want she tells her brother she's staying in Weatherfield and she's still part of their family, whether he likes it or not.

Across the street Aidan and Eva arrive back from their abortive night out. While Eva goes off to buy a pint of milk, Aidan gets out his phone to call Maria. As he does so he spots Maria and Adam coming out of the Rovers. Maria's on the point of calling it a night but then she sees Aidan watching her. To Adam's delight she has a swift change of heart and makes sure Aidan sees her kissing Adam before heading off with him in the direction of her flat.

Wednesday 7 December

Nessa awakes and gives a bloodcurdling scream, which has Cathy and Alex coming running to her room. Roy is sitting on the bed, staring vacantly ahead. It seems he's sleepwalking.

Peter tells Daniel that he should tell the police about his mother. He's worried that they're going to want to know why he didn't report her missing earlier. Peter says he should just to tell them what he told him. He says he will always regret it if he doesn't try to find out what happened to her, and offers to go with him.

Simon is due to go to his counseling session and they're all waiting in the flat for Peter to arrive to go with him. Nick reckons he's not going to come, but Leanne is sure he will.

Mary is in the back yard, looking at some pressed blue flowers.

Adam is just leaving Maria's flat when Aidan and Eva come walking by. Eva is really pleased, but Aidan doesn't look very happy.

Nessa comes down into the cafe and starts making jokes about Roy's night time visit and saying she'll have to start locking her door. Roy obviously hasn't a clue what she's talking about and Cathy asks him if he remembers sleepwalking. He's sure it wasn't possible, but Cathy wonders if that's why she's found the kitchen light on a few times lately.

Adam and Daniel are at the police station, telling a policewoman how his mother left six years ago. He says that he could have gone with her, but they weren't getting on. He says he wasn't worried because there was food in the fridge and she'd left money, and he thought she was coming back.

Maria and Eva are in the cafe when Adam comes in and asks Maria if she'd like a drink later. She says she can't, she's got stuff to do.

Mary is in the cafe with Erica, who is trying to get her to talk about her mother. Mary says she doesn't want to discuss it. Norris comes in and sits down with them, but Mary says she's remembered something she had to do and jumps up and leaves in a hurry. Norris asks Erica what's wrong, he's concerned because Mary is his friend. Erica says she found her burning old newspapers, and she thinks it has something to do with her mother.

Peter and Daniel arrive back in the Street, where Peter is accosted by a very angry Leanne who demands to know why he didn't turn up for Simon's counseling session. When he can get a word in, he tells her that he forgot because he's been at the police station with Daniel. He explains that Denise left six years ago and Daniel hasn't seen her since, and he can't tell Ken at the moment. Leanne calms right down and Peter tells her that he'll talk to Simon. He puts his hand on Leanne's shoulder as they finish their conversation, and this noticed by Nick who's watching from across the Street.

Liam is round in Eva's flat when Aidan turns up. He's not happy to hear that Eva is babysitting, presumably so that Maria can see Adam, so tells her he's made plans to take her out. He says that he'll take Liam home while she gets herself ready. "Don't go barging in, in case she's got company," says Eva.

Yasmeen goes into the cafe and asks Cathy how her talk went with Nessa about Alan. Cathy admits it hasn't happened, she didn't want any upset at the moment, what with Roy being so stressed.

Peter and Daniel are in the pub, and Peter tells Daniel that although Ken hasn't been a great dad to him, he should never doubt that he loves him. Two young women have been talking to Michelle about weddings, and they come over and one starts trying to chat Peter up.

Nick asks Leanne why Peter didn't turn up to the counseling session. She's vague, and tells him that Peter just felt he couldn't leave Ken. (Why on earth didn't she tell him the truth?). Nick obviously picks up that there's something she's not telling him, but goes off to meet David in the pub.

Aidan takes Liam back to Maria, and she's horrified because she's half way through wrapping up a new bicycle for him, so of course he sees it and wants to ride it right now. Maria is cross with Aidan and knows full well that he only brought Liam back because he thought she had Adam there, and tells him to leave.

Norris arrives at the florist's to see Mary and invites her round for tea, so they can have a 'proper natter'. Mary wants to know what he wants to talk about and he confesses that Erica told him it was something about finding her mother. Mary doesn't want to talk about it and tries to hustle him out of the shop, but he persists until, in desperation, she tells him she's not trying to find her mother, she's trying to find her son!

Back in the Rover's, the young blonde is still trying to chat up Peter. When she goes off to the ladies' loo, Daniel asks whether he should make himself scarce. Peter tells him no, there's only one woman he's interested in and it's not her. Nick arrives at that moment and hears this.

Mary and Norris are seated in the florist's shop and she's telling him her story. She was 14 and she used to babysit the children of a family friend, the local minister, a pillar of the community. He stopped the car one evening when he was driving her home. "He raped you?" asks Norris, gently, and asks if she told anyone. She tells him she didn't, not at first anyway. Then she started getting bigger, but her mother never asked if she was ok, she just cried. Mary was made to feel guilty for disappointing her mother, who obviously thought it was all Mary's fault. She told people Mary had gone to stay with an aunt, but in reality she gave birth at home, and she did see him, just for a moment. Later a nurse found the baby on the steps of St Jude's at Newton-le-Willows, and so he was called Jude. (Something Mary read in the local newspaper).

Back in the pub, overheard by Nick, Daniel asks Peter if the lady he's interested in feels the same. Peter says she does, but it's complicated, there's a lot of baggage and she's in a relationship. Nick cannot keep quiet at this point and asks if Peter can't have a relationship without cheating on someone. He starts to get quite aggressive so Michelle intervenes and tells him that's enough. Just then David comes in and urges him to come away from the bar and sit down, where Nick tells him that Peter is up to something with Leanne.

Back in the florist's, Norris tells Mary she has to find her son, but she shakes her head. She tells him that since the day he was born she's had a fantasy that one day she would find him, and they would hug and laugh and cry together.....but what if it isn't like that? What if he hates her for what she's done? Norris tells her that she was innocent and she's his mother, but Mary isn't sure that's enough. He will think she should have kept him and taken care of him, so it's less painful to keep hold of the fantasy.

Thursday 8 December

Hi there. It is another Thursday night extra episode of Coronation Street. Thank you ITV, so here I am laptop on my ... lap, and here I go with tonight's episode.

It opens with an opening - Tracy opening up the flower shop. She is followed by Norris wanting to leave a message for Mary, but Tracy tells him she has phoned in sick.

Todd is making a fry-up for Billy for breakfast. Billy is suffering from a hangover. Billy cuddles Todd.

Leanne puts the phone down from her sister Toyah (remember her?!) to talk to Nick. She has invited them, Si and Eva (where does she fit in ?) for Christmas. Nick wonders why; Leanne thinks it is 'reinforcements' as she is having trouble with her fella. After thinking about the alternatives, Gail, Peter, Nick says they should go.

In Roy's cafe, Roy is running through some wedding menus with Robert. Audrey comes into the cafe with Freddie. She introduces him to Nessa. Nessa starts to flirt with Freddie. Yasmeen is sitting at one of the tables and overhears the conversation. She jumps up to complain to Nessa saying that she has no self-respect. At this point Cathy comes in saying it is freezing outside.

Roy is working with Robert on the seating plan. Robert warns him to think carefully over the seating arrangements.

Peter explains to Leanne that he tried to speak to Si to apologise, but he will try and do it with him later after school. Leanne takes the opportunity to tell Peter that they are spending Christmas with Leanne. He is disappointed that he won't see his son over Christmas. Peter then asks Leanne what he could buy Si for Christmas. She says she will come shopping with him.

Todd is talking to Billy. He wishes he wasn't a vicar, but says he realises that he was a vicar when they met up. Billy has a meeting with the Bishop. Todd tells him to tell the Bishop that he is lucky to have him !

Maria is chatting to Michelle in the street as Liam is riding his bike. Michelle says she is a good mother because anything her mother bought for her after October was wrapped up for Christmas. Maria says that was the plan but Aidan brought him round just as she was wrapping it. Michelle says he seems to be enjoying it anyway. Noting that Maria is looking down, she says she will pull through and suggests that they go into town together.

In the Bistro, Nick tells Robert that the party they have there are pretty lively. Robert agrees, but Nick says Leanne will be there to sort things Robert then tells him that she had phone in and is taking a day's leave to do some Christmas shopping. Robert thinks it maybe for a surprise for Nick.

Tracy then walks into the Bistro with Adam. Nick thought the booking was for three. Tracy says Peter let her down to do some Christmas shopping (do you see a story emerging here?!).

Peter and Leanne are in a game store trying to choose a present for Si. The shop assistant comes over to help. He tells her and "her husband" to follow him. Leanne laughs and says he is not her husband.

Mary is putting some flowers out outside the shop. Norris spots her and says that he understood she was off sick. She says that she had a headache but is over it now. Norris invites her over for tea, she tells him to forget what they were talking about previously. Norris says he wants to help, and talking would be of great benefit.

Nessa in the cafe tells Alya, Todd and Audrey that she only has his word that he was sleepwalking. He wouldn't be the first man to feel the urge to visit her in the middle of the night! Of course Audrey wants to know who she is talking about. At which point, unnoticed by Nessa, Cathy comes down and overhears the conversation. She reminds her that she went off with her previous husband Alan, and now Roy. Cathy says Alan wasn't like that. Nessa says that all men lie. Cathy chucks Nessa out of the cafe, with Audrey's full support.

Billy is talking to the Bishop. The Bishop says that one time he took three months leave to go to Africa, but when he got back he thought he had forgotten how to do his job. So he assures Billy not to worry as he will soon get back into the swing of things. Billy says he doesn't think this is what he wants anymore. He says he wants to be a normal partner to his boyfriend and not behave in a way acceptable to the church and not to himself. The Bishop urges him to take time to think about his actions. Billy says he is sure and wants to quit.

Leanne and Peter return to their car in the car park only to find that it has been clamped. (Whatever the reason, unless the car park is owned by the Council, it is now illegal for a private parking company to clamp a vehicle). After contacting the parking company, Peter informs Leanne that they are parked in a designated disabled bay, and then they find an obscured parking sign to that effect. While they are waiting Leanne gets into the car and hears the group Bros on the car radio. She reminisces how her and Toyah used to love the group.

In the flower shop, Mary hears the door opening and shouts that they are closed. Norris walks in. He tells her that she can't bury her head in the sand. She says she has done so for the past 32 years and it hasn't caused any problems. She realises she has a son, who is not part of her life or he hers. She hopes that he is with people who love him. Norris offers his advice that this should not be something that she regrets in the future, by not making any contact with him. She says she has let it go and she hopes he will do the same.

Leanne and Peter are chatting. Peter says that at one time Si hoped he would have a sister. Peter thinks it was a way of keeping him and Leanne together. They start to get romantic when the parking attendant knocks on their window!

Maria and Michelle return from shopping. Maria notices Adam leaving the house, and Michelle asks if she has seen something she likes. Maria says she has already 'liked him' !

Billy returns home to Todd to tell him that he has quit. He says he couldn't go back if they couldn't accept him and Todd together.

Leanne is back home and unpacking her shopping with Nick. She tells him that Peter came round and she told him that they were going to Toyah's for Christmas. She explains she also went shopping with Peter and her car got clamped. She is tired and suggests she would like a bubble bath and a foot massage. Then the phone rings. Nick says it is hers. She tells him to leave it as it will be Si. She goes upstairs for a wee! Nick looks at the phone and it is a text message from Peter thanking her, and saying it felt like old times. Nick doesn't look happy.

Roy walks into his flat where Cathy is waiting. He is relieved that Nessa isn't there. Roy asks if everything is alright. Cathy says she had 'words' with Nessa. She says when they were kids whenever there was an argument, Cathy always felt that it was her fault. Roy says she is a forgiving person. Cathy said that when she found out that Nessa and Alan were having an affair, she thought it was something that she had done. She fears that Roy is going to be disappointed in her at sometime in the future and would feel he had made a terrible mistake. She suggests to face up to it now. Roy believes he understands what she is hinting at. Cathy says she will move into Alex's room for the night.

Peter opens a suitcase and shows Tracy that it is her old tapes (didn't she go upstairs for several years to listen to her tapes?!). The first one she finds is of Bryan Adams. She was totally in love with him. Tracy goes off to have a bath leaving Peter to sort out the tapes and pauses at one from Bros !

Now there are hints at two storylines that will be happening over Christmas. I wonder if you picked them up ! I won't spoil it for you in case you haven't, or don't want to know!

Meanwhile I leave you in the capable hands of Margaret who will take up the story. I'll be back soon!

Friday 9 December

Here's the first Friday episode.

Roy's busy canceling all the arrangements for the wedding and seems quite proud of it when he tells Cathy. She says the truth is that Nessa put paranoid thoughts into her head and Roy refused to disabuse her. They'll lose their deposits but Roy says it can't be helped. He's told almost all the guests but some he wants to tell face-to-face. Cathy notices his rash is gone.

Fiz explains cooking apples to Tyrone. He's never heard of them but had a big green apple from Dev's for his lunch and it was really sour. Roy rings.

Daniel looks at the gifts under the tree. Peter tells him to leave them alone. The phone goes just as Ken and Eccles get back from a walk. Ken refuses to wear a warm hat when he goes out (it ruins his hair) and Peter tells him off. It's Roy on the phone.

In Eileen's house the post has brought more solicitors' letters from lawyers representing the development's clients. Todd can remember each customer but Phelan's not bothered. Billy mentions there's a job going as receptionist at a drugs clinic. Phelan's dismissive of that, too. Phelan gets a phone call from his mate Tommy.

In the Bistro, Robert can't believe how paranoid Nick is. Nick's seething about hearing Peter say there was only one woman for him. Robert advises Nick to tell Peter how he feels. Roy arrives to cancel.

Leanne struggles away from the shop, waddling as if she's 11 months pregnant with quads.

Eileen tells Tyrone about the letters. Tyrone points out even the police don't think Phelan had anything to do with the scam.

Roy's at the florist's, though Tracy says it's too late to cancel the flower delivery. Roy's happy to pay in full. Mary tries asking for details about who stopped the wedding but Tracy tells her off. When Roy's gone she has another go at Mary about customer service. She says Norris has been in more than once looking for Mary. Tracy asks if she and Norris have ever. . . you know. Mary seems disgusted by the very thought.

Kevin tells Anna about the letters Eileen's been getting. Anna's sorting the washing and Kevin wants her to go out but she refuses. She doesn't think she'll go to the wedding. Kevin says she has to - she's picked out her dress. The door buzzer goes. It's Roy.

Nessa is in the cafe explaining that all men are liars and cheaters (though Alex thinks she says lions and cheetahs). Alex defends Roy and Roy comes in in time to hear him saying how honourable Roy is and how he'd never let anyone down.

Todd's going into town to look for a job with a solicitor. He kisses Billy and goes off.

Cathy comes in and checks Roy's dealt with everything.

Eva's discovered that Aidan walked in on Maria wrapping her gift for Liam. She says he's ruined Liam's Christmas. Eva tells Aidan and Johnny that Maria seems really smitten by Adam Barlow.

Cathy's laid out her wedding dress ready to return it. She thinks it'll be really embarrassing. Roy says they could always go ahead with the wedding. After all, they made promises. Cathy tells him she was provoked by Nessa. She let off some steam in the hope that Roy would reassure her and say he'd never leave her, that he'd never be like Alan. But instead, Roy said, "Well, if that's how you feel." Roy tells her he was trying to be considerate. Cathy says he seemed overcome with relief. "I didn't want to call it off, Roy. I wanted you to reassure me." Roy says they can untell people. She checks whether he cares for her and does want to get married. She hears the bin lorry and scarpers off downstairs to stop it.

Peter sees Leanne coming out of the flats and reminds her it's the sixth anniversary of their wedding. He asks if they can get together with Simon before they go to Liverpool because he wants to see Simon open his presents.

Phelan's going off to do some hard labour. He tells Eileen he wants to pay everyone back.

Ken has Eccles out for another walk and meets Nessa in the street. They're pleasant enough to each other.

Phelan sees Andy and asks him about his writing. Andy says he's writing one about a very bad man who finally gets what's coming to him.

Leanne and Peter have sorted out a date.

Roy's back asking Tracy if the flower arrangements can be rearranged.

Kevin can't believe Ty's never heard of cooking apples. He and Fiz and Tyrone talk about Roy and here's the man himself to tell them the wedding's back on.

Johnny thinks Aidan fancies Maria but Aidan denies it. Johnny describes Eva as a cracking bit of stuff with no luggage - er. . . baggage. Eva comes in. She wants Aidan to spend the afternoon with her doing their joint Christmas cards.

Anna practises her vows in the cafe. Daniel comes in and makes conversation with Billy, discovering that Billy used to be a vicar. Daniel dismisses all vicars, saying the world would be a better place without them. Billy thinks this is reductive. Billy tells Anna he used to practise his sermons with a dictaphone. Anna says she's got eight and goes off to get one.

Roy's told Ken. He leaves as Nick arrives. Nick asks for a private word. Ken says he'll take the dog out again. Peter tells him to wear his scarf. Peter tries to make pleasant conversation. "Stay away from Leanne. I know what you're up to!" Nick rages.

Kevin tells Anna about the wedding being back on. He wants her to go with him.

Roy arrives at the Bistro to reverse his decision. "Should your premises and your staff be still available, I want to un-cancel the booking." Then Roy is breathless and staggering and close to collapse. Zeedan rushes over to support him as he seems close to fainting.

Ooh er. . .
The end of this episode.

Hello. Late on parade today. So on with the motley. Episode 9053. Written by Jonathan Harvey and directed by Tim Finn. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open in the Bistro with Roy suffering a panic attack. Zeedan, Robert and then Steph all help. She gets him outside and steadily calms him down. She gets him to sit down in a chair which Zeedan brings. Steph tells Roy to breathe in through his nose and not his mouth - she is reading instructions from her phone. Hold for three seconds and the breathe out. Tyrone sees Roy distressed and rushes over. Slowly Roy's panic subsides. Too soon he gets up and goes, confirming that the wedding is on. He tells Ty he would rather be on his own. he has a lot to do. He departs putting his coat on.

Meanwhile Peter and Nick are discussing the latter's mental health problems. Peter cannot understand Nick's concerns - Peter was worried about Nick's mental health when he and Leanne got back together. Nick calls Peter a jobless alcoholic the wrong side of 50 living at home with his father; by comparison he can put bread on the table. Peter refuses to rise to the bait and maintains his calm. Nick continues to needle, calling Number One a real bachelor pad. As he leaves Peter does bite back asking Nick to wish Leanne a happy sixth wedding anniversary. Peter looks around himself.

Todd has got nowhere looking for a job and is welcomed by Billy who suggests they get royally wasted - by sticking it on his credit card as they will soon have jobs. And can enjoy the hangovers whilst they are not working.

Brian is watching Norris do some family searching online. Peter is also sat at the bar. Norris gets Brian to talk about recycling. He goes on to talk about edumation (combining education and information). They then get confused about whether or not plastic bags were recyclable. Peter informs Ty who comes in that once he passes his crb he will be joining Ty working on the cabs. Ty wants a quiet word with Brian and brings him up to date with Roy's panic attack earlier. Brian says he has had concerns as well. But they are not sure what to do next.

In the cafe Catherine Christine Wendy is still dictating her wedding vows into the dictating machine. (In the 21st century of course normal people use their mobile phone for such things ... indeed does anyone have a dictating machine any longer?). Roy returns from a "walk". Before he can say anything Nessa arrives at full volume for a brew. he decides to leave the ladies to it. Nessa has already heard that the wedding is back on from Alex and says she has not seen a dictating machine in a long time. Cathy has been practising because she does not want a Lady Di moment and get her vows all wrong. Cathy recalls exactly what she got wrong. Nessa says that compared with Di there will be a few mates and tramp called Bernie watching her. Cathy tells her off for knocking Roy as he is a wonderful man and one of the best. They bicker over the number of partners Nessa has enjoyed - but Cathy wants to only look forward. They shake hands.

Eva and Aidan return from Christmas shopping. They have come via the printers and she has got his present on Click and Collect! She will not let him look as it is top secret. And why was she in the printers - she produces their Christmas card - a picture of the two of them together on the front and the printers have put everything inside - so all they have to do is seal 150 envelopes. Aidan is shocked as he normally writes 2. She offers him a silver or gold pen and welcomes him to her Christmas! He thinks it is a lousy picture as he thinks he is constipated! She will get the address book. [She is I believe known as "high maintenance".

Roy comes downstairs into the cafe. Cathy goes upstairs to join Nessa and Brian and Ty are waiting for Roy. Brian believes they can help Roy. They want Roy to take a step back and reconsider his upcoming nuptials to Cathy. Ty adds that Roy was proper freaking out earlier. Roy re-assures Ty. Ty asks if it demonstrates that Roy does not want to go through with the wedding - he can tell them. Roy does not answer.

Anna is writing cards in the flat and opens the door - it is Peter - he still has a key for downstairs. He will put the kettle on. She tells Peter that she has not wrecked the joint "Mr Landlord". Does he want the rent? Peter says it is not that. No he needs the flat back. Anna is a little shocked.

After the break we are back in the cafe where Brian says he sees a lot of himself in Roy. Brian tells us of his engagement to Cherish Boothroyd in 1985 - he was going to be married in kilt, sporran, sgian dubh (a little dirk). Brian had rashes and could not stop crying. She was not the right woman for him. Roy attributes his rash to a new fabric conditioner. Ty says that even Roy's body is telling him that this is not right. Roy tells them that people make compromises in life. Brian says he tried to make it work with Julie - but that failed as well. He will not sit and listen to their uninvited negativity. He has made a promise to Cathy which will be kept. The dynamic duo depart.

Leanne is unpacking shopping when Nick returns. He is still depressed about Peter. He tells Leanne he has warned him off. Leanne says that they are just mates. She calls Nick paranoid. And they are only mates because she is bringing up Simon. Would Nick prefer she as a Jeremy Kyle type slagging Peter off all the time? Nick does not want the conversation.

Peter is apologising to Anna as the timing is not perfect - but he needs to get himself sorted. He is sorry - but Anna feels worse. Peter cannot stay living at Number One. He has to put some roots down. And perhaps she and Kev can move forward. Apparently no lease was ever signed and he can kick them out anytime. Anna sarcastically wishes him a Merry Christmas. He will be in touch and he goes.

Billy and Todd are drinking in the Rovers and chatting to Michelle. Todd reckons there is a lot of similarity between vicars and barmaids - both listen to other people's problems and both hand out wine. Billy's phone goes and he has an interview for a receptionist's job at a drugs clinic (time to bring back Billy's brother maybe?). Michelle buys the next round.

Aidan is writing addresses on envelopes. Eva emerges from the bedroom. Her slim figure in a short flimsy dressing gown which she unties and it slides slowly to the ground displaying her hour glass figure. He is going to get a reward for his effort with the cards. He needs to unwrap one of his special Christmas presents. She wants to be sure that all the poppers and fastenings work. And they head for the bedroom. He gives a fireman's lift into the bedroom.

Eileen has made a cuppa for Pat asleep on the sofa. She is heading upstairs for a bath but a letter arrives and she opens it in the hall. It is obviously not a nice letter and she does not disclose the contents to Pat continuing upstairs.

Roy is closing up when Brian and Ty return to the cafe. He tries to go upstairs so he does not have to listen to him but Brian gets a foot in the door and they follow him up to the flat. Upstairs Cathy is still busy recording her vows. Nessa is ready to go and as Roy arrives up the stairs followed by Brian and Ty (the girls think for a stag do) Cathy puts the recorder down on the table picks up her bags and the two girls depart. Brian and Ty assure Roy that they both like Cathy. Roy replies that "Even if this wedding is something I don't really want, even if it goes against everything I really, really want, I have given my word. I have told Cathy that I will marry her and that is what I am going to do." He tells them that they can consider themselves uninvited. He does not want to see either of them there. Brian says there is no arguing with him and both he and Ty leave. Roy scratches his rash. The camera pans down to the dictaphone - the little red glowing light evidence that it has recorded everything.

Roll credits.

Interesting hints dropped at various points. One Peter Barlow has a woman - but there are complications - apparently she is married and she reminds him of Leanne.

R'Toyota is having problems with her husband and hence Leanne has to go there at Xmas (coming up on Monday).

Now are we being pushed to believe that Peter has been friends with R'Toyota?

All will be revealed at Christmas I gather.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 12 December

Written by Damon Alexis-Rochefort Directed by Brett Fallis

Someone's getting married this morning and she bounces out of Number 6 with Yasmeen behind her, waving and smiling at everyone she sees as she bounces into the salon to get her hair done. Someone else is getting married today and he is looking like it's the last think he wants as he peers through the nets at his intended who is full of joy. I'm Getting Married In the Morning chirps out from Cathy's countdown widget, having reached the day. Roy shuts it off with a sigh. He wanders around the flat, picks up the dictaphone and moves it to another table, then slowly eases off his wedding ring, the one Hayley gave him. He sets it on one of a pair of wooden Dutch shoes under their photo.

Fiz is pegging out the laundry. She blanks a penitent looking Tyrone who has brought her out a cuppa.

In the salon, Cathy's in curlers as Audrey fusses over her. They all share a joke. Nessa arrives with a TMI (Too Much Information) about wearing the wrong bra which made her late. She proceeds to insult everyone with her enthusiasm and left handed compliments. Before she can get her hands on Yasmeen's hair, Cathy takes a phone call from Roy. Her face falls. Roy has told her that Tyrone can't make the wedding. He's told her nothing else so now Cathy's fretting. Audrey tells her not to worry and shuffles her over to the dryer. Cathy assures Yasmeen she's not nervous, she's excited and never been more sure of anything in her life. (Sounds like a potential Phrase of Doom, there, if you ask me.)

Kevin brings Jack to see Anna and borrow the shower as his is being fixed and awaiting a part. Jack is sent in to have his first with the promise of a way better breakfast than the porridge his father gave him. Anna tells that Peter served up notice to evict and she also doesn't feel like going to the wedding.

Alex has Roy wearing a party hat and is serving him breakfast in the cafe. Alex points out it's the happiest day of his life, after all. Roy then launches into an explanation of the meaning of "happiest" and why you can't have two, citing an example that you can't have two tallest mountains in the world. Alex swiftly contradicts him. You can if they are the same size. True, that. Mary brings the men's buttonholes to the cafe. Roy tells her that neither Ken, Tyrone nor Brian is coming to the wedding. Ken, Mary assumes, is not up to it but Roy, getting irritated, doesn't tell her why the other two aren't going. Norris arrives to see if anything needs doing. Mary tries to get away but Norris offers her a lift to the church. She declines, thank you.

Eileen fields the post and notices another letter that seems to be similar to the one the other day. She notices Andy staring from across the road. Is he sending poison pen letters? Over the road, the bride and two ladies come across to where Tyrone is taking a photo of Fiz and the little girls all dressed up. Cathy takes the phone and shoots a photo of the whole family. Tyrone uses a lame excuse of a work emergency but it doesn't seem to go over well and Fiz is stood there glaring at him the whole time. Cathy asks Fiz to do the reading. Ruby notices Yasmeen's very pouffed up hair (Nessa got her hands on it after all). After the women leave, Fiz hisses at Tyrone for making lame excuses and he'd better figure out something to tell the girls because she doesn't want them to know he's upset Roy. She slams the door after following the kids inside and he storms down the street. The women turn around across the street and reckon they've had a row. Cathy realizes she doesn't have her vows and decides to run back to the flat to get the dictaphone.

Brian is in the pub and doesn't want to tell Michelle why he's not going to the wedding. Robert tells Steve that his food delivery service seems to be getting complains about cold food. Steve says his drivers go as fast as allowed and he can't control things like traffic. There's not a lot more he can do. Nick is caustic about Steve's professionalism. Michelle defends her husband as being a bit anxious about the 20 week scan. Nick looks to be biting his tongue rather than spitting out a reply he'll regret. Robert decides to have a drink but Nick has a wine tasting to get to. Brian and Tyrone are at the other end of the bar, commiserating. They agree that they were right to bring up their concerns about the wedding even though Roy is going through with it anyway. They look at each other and turn to leave, apparently thinking they have to do something about the situation.

Across the road, Andy has come to see Gail. He's offered to go spread Michael's ashes with her. Gail's not going to the wedding, either, it being too soon. She tells Andy she has a special place in mind and is happy Andy wants to come.

Anna stands before a mirror. She lifts up the legs of her pyjama bottoms and looks at the scars then glances back where a little black dress is waiting on the bed. She gets tearful.

Cathy looks around the flat for the dictaphone and discovers is where Roy had laid it earlier. She presses the play button and listens to herself begin to recite her vows.

After the break, people are arriving at the church. Sally remarks that Roy is Bethany's godfather. Bethany says he's been great and never forgets a birthday. Sally says that Tim was running around the Arndale center getting a wedding gift at the last minute. Chesney and Sinead talk about marriage. He seems a bit disappointed when she says she isn't sure she wants to get married at all, being a modern girl and all. Tyrone and Brian come to the church running and head straight to Roy. They apologize for sticking their noses in and want his forgiveness. He does, of course. Sally and Audrey look down their noses at the new arrivals, neither dressed for a wedding. Tyrone is still in his overalls and Brian in his track suit, having been for a run earlier). Roy tells them it doesn't matter how they're dressed.

Anna is sitting on the bed, not dressed yet. Kevin pops in and Anna panics that he'll see her legs. She screams at him hysterically to get out, frightening the life out of him. She is in floods of tears.

Gail and Andy come to a little pond. She tells him she and Michael both liked it there. They were going to renew their vows on that spot. She asks if he'd like to do this together. He opens the urn and they each take a handful, throwing them into the breeze over the water. Gail says goodbye. Andy is in bits, and blames Phelan for Michael's death. Gail urges him to stop obsessing. Michael died of a heart attack. Andy is sure PHelan was involved somehow. Gail says they haven't got a choice but to move on.

Faye's had a text from her mother who has canceled. Tim is nowhere to be seen either. Tyrone goes to sit beside Sally but she doesn't want his dirty overalls anywhere near her Donna Karan suit. Chesney and Sinead take his place. Rita's wearing a glorious bright purple hat. Norris looks around anxiously and spots Mary arriving and he calls her over. She looks quite nice as well, with a flower in her hair that's loose and curled. She reluctantly sits with Norris and Rita, exchanging complements with Rita. Tim finally arrives and causes upset trying to squeeze in. He does not win his wife's favour with his choice of a wedding gift, a mat for around the toilet, no matter how nice he says it is. He mentions that Eileen is covering at the cab office but is upset because she's been getting poison pen letters. Sally's aghast, worried that someone might mention her because of her role in getting the project approved. Alex leans over to see how Roy is. Roy affirms that he's happy but Alex suggests he tell his face that. (HA! Good one!)

Steve and Michelle are having the ultrasound scan and the heartbeat is pointed out. Everything looks fine! Steve leans in to talk to his baby. When they're asked if they want to know the sex they say they do. It's a boy! Mama and Daddy look excited.

The bride and her entourage arrive, just a little, socially acceptably late. Fiz and Yasmeen usher the little girls inside. Cathy is still nervous about getting her vows right, thinking the dictaphone was a mistake. (you don't know the half, yet). She looks lovely in her floaty dress with a lacy bodice and fur-collared little jacket. Nessa assures her she'll be fine. Nessa asks her if she'll let her walk her down the aisle, putting things behind them and really feel like sisters. Cathy agrees. Nessa is excited and runs inside to make sure everyone's ready. Cathy pulls out the dictaphone again. But this time she hears Roy say that even if the wedding isn't what he wants, he's going to honour his promise. Uh oh.

Nick and Robert come in to the cab office to get a cab and are delighted to see Peter, an easy mark for teasing. But Peter tells them they will have to wait 40 minutes as they are a couple of drivers down. Nick can't drive, he's had a couple of drinks already. Eileen arrives and chides them for disrespecting their business. Peter gets up and offers to drive them. He can't drive a cab yet but he can take them in Ken's car as thanks for all that Nick has done for Simon. Off they go.

Cathy is listening to the recording again. She shuts it off as Nessa comes back outside. Nessa asks if she's ready. She thinks and then says "Let's get this show on the road" but her previous excitement has left the building, so to speak.

The congregation stand as the opening bars of the Wedding March play. Fiz leads Hope and Ruby up the aisle, followed by Cathy on Nessa's arm. Cathy looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights rather than a blushing bride and Roy looks equally nervous as Cathy arrives by his side and he tells her she looks very nice.

Back on the street, Steve is showing Amy a photo of the baby scan. She declares her baby brother looks like an alien. Steve is really getting into the swing of happy families and decides to walk Amy back to school instead of doing his shift at the cab office. After he's gone Liz tries suggesting to Michelle that she should bury the hatchet with Leanne and re-establish their friendship.

Meanwhile Anna apologises to Kevin for her earlier outburst. He tells her he doesn't care about missing the wedding but he just wishes she'd stop pushing him away and talk to him. He tells her they can't go on like this.

We return to the wedding where Mary is doing a reading. Roy and Cathy both look as though they're waiting to be executed rather than about to get married.

Phelan goes into the cab office to see Eileen. He's found the hate mail that Eileen had hidden from him. He thanks her for caring enough to spare his feelings. Eileen tries to brush it off and tells him not to go all mushy on him.

Peter delivers Nick and Robert back home after their wine tasting. They are both very drunk which causes Nick to start having a go at Peter. Leanne comes along and is not impressed by their behaviour. It's Roy and Cathy's wedding reception in an hour and she tells the two men to sober up and grow up.

Kevin is still trying to get through to Anna. He says that if she can't talk to him then who can she talk to? Anna then surprises him by asking whether she and Faye can move in with him after all. Kevin hesitantly agrees although only because he's wondering what's prompted this sudden change of heart.

Back at the wedding it's now Tyrone's turn to do a reading. But as he gets up Cathy asks why he's wearing his overalls. Roy tells her it's not important but Cathy replies icily that she'll decide what is and isn't important. And, with that, she stands up and tells Roy in front of the whole congregation how she left her Dictaphone on and heard his entire conversation with Ty and Brian and learned that Roy doesn't love her and is only going through with the wedding because he made a promise. Cathy asks the vicar to get rid of everyone before rushing off towards the vestry in tears, swiftly followed by Nessa.

Roy is waiting in the church with Ty and Fiz when Cathy re-emerges from the vestry with Nessa. She asks everyone to leave her alone with Roy.

Anna and Kevin are holding hands on the sofa as she explains she's still worried about her scarring. He tells her that she loves her, no matter what. They start to kiss just as Faye comes through the door. She casually tells them that the wedding's off. Anna is worried and wants to know more details but Faye doesn't know any more than that. Kevin tells Anna to stop worrying about that and share their good news with Faye. Faye takes it completely in her stride and goes off to get changed. Kevin advises Anna not to go rushing round to see Roy.

Back in the church Roy is trying to explain to Cathy why he was going to go through with the wedding. He says he knew she wanted to get married and adds that he's very fond of her. Cathy tells Roy that she hates a drama and that her grandfather advised that a stiff upper lip works better than therapy. Roy interjects that he's very sorry. For what, asks Cathy – for keeping his word and putting honour above his own happiness? Roy says that he's not very good with expressing his feelings. Cathy takes his hand and says that he shouldn't have to or perhaps he can tell her another time. She tells Roy that she's setting him free from his obligation to marry her. Even though she doesn't mean it she adds that she doesn't want to get married and she just wants him to be happy, even if that means they are better off just being good friends. Cathy turns away and stifles a sob as Roy immediately agrees that's the best way forward.

The wedding itself may not have happened but at the Bistro the reception is still going ahead. Nick is serving Champagne and apologising for the service but says Andy's let him down. Audrey puts him straight and tells him Andy has spent the day with his mother, helping her to scatter Michael's ashes.

Ty and Brian are talking to Audrey, Sinead and Chesney about what Cathy heard on the tape. Audrey asks Ches when he's going to make an honest woman of Sinead. She immediately says they're in no hurry and adds that every wedding she's ever been to ends up in tears or a full on fist fight. Chesney looks bemused.

Nick is still drunk and it's made him argumentative. He starts to pick a fight with Leanne who lays into him for giving Peter a hard time earlier. Nick petulantly tells her that he's sorry he doesn't live up to the high standard of her exes. Robert overhears and comments to Leanne that she's very defensive of Peter. She tells Robert that Simon's thrilled to have his dad back, Peter's sticking around and Nick just has to get used to it.

Roy and Cathy arrive back on the street. She tells him she'll just go in and get a few of her essential things and come back for the rest tomorrow. Roy says it's fine if that's what she wants.

Norris tracks Mary down in the Rovers. He wants to talk to her but Mary doesn't want to know. She says the only think she regrets more than giving up her son is telling Norris about it.

Behind the bar, Steve, Michelle and Liz are still happily looking at the baby scan photo. As Liz serves Norris she overhears Michelle telling Steve that she saw Leanne earlier and thinks maybe his mum is right, it seems daft them not speaking to each other, especially as they are both going to be having little boys. Michelle steps away and Steve angrily whispers to his mum to stop interfering.

Round at Eileen's she and Pat have the hate mail spread out on the table. He points out that most of the letters are legitimately complaining about the flats but two of them are different as they are personal. He tells Eileen he doesn't want her to be hurt. She says she doesn't want him to be hurt either. Phelan takes this as a come on and leans forward to kiss Eileen who pulls away and asks him what the hell he thinks he's doing. She tells him if he wants to protect her he should move out, problem solved.

Cathy has gathered a few bits and is standing with Roy in the empty cafe. She tells him she and Alex are going to stay with Yasmeen. "For what it's worth, I do love you Roy Cropper," says Cathy. "Thank you," replies Roy. Cathy hesitates, hoping for more, but when it doesn't happen she leaves. Roy picks up his coat and bag, turns out the lights and heads upstairs to the flat.

Out in the street, Anna is hand delivering Christmas cards. When she reaches Eileen's door she pulls out a different envelope and glances behind her before posting it through the letterbox. She doesn't notice Phelan watching her from across the street.

Roy is standing alone in his flat. He puts the musical wedding countdown calendar in a drawer and then walks across the room to retrieve his old wedding ring which he replaces on his finger.

Wednesday 14 December

Pat is looking through the paper for accommodation when Eileen comes down. She's angry about the poison pen letters and wants to call the police. He tells her that whoever sent them is suffering because of Vinny, he doesn't want to make it any worse by calling the police. Eileen, however, won't be swayed, and picks up the phone to dial. He tells her to stop, and then reveals that the person who sent the letters was Anna, he saw her post one through the door last night. He reminds Eileen of what Anna has been through and says that if he's gentle he's sure he can talk some sense into her. Eileen tells him he's a very forgiving man.

Brian calls to see Roy, who assures him he's fine, although saddened. He tells him that Cathy understands, he hasn't hurt her. Roy moves to open up the cafe, but Brian pulls him back. Shouldn't he have a day off? All the customers will be asking him awkward questions, again and again. Roy points out that with Anna still off, there's no one to cover. Brian tells him to relax. "Leave everything to me!" he says.

Cathy is with Alex at Yasmeen's. Alex tells her to cheer up, he's sure they'll get back together, despite Cathy telling him that her relationship with Roy is over. She runs upstairs weeping, leaving Alex looking confused. "Did I say something wrong?" he asks, and Yasmeen assures him he didn't, but it's just that different people want different things.

Luke has spent the night with Tracy and is kissing her goodbye in the Barlow kitchen, before he walks out of the back door. Tracy looks over and sees Amy standing in the doorway, she's seen it all. She wants to know if Luke is Tracy's new boyfriend, and when Tracy hesitates she says he must be if Tracy was kissing him. "Er...yes, yes, he's my new boyfriend," says Tracy. Amy remarks that he's a bit young, but he's cool, and asks if he can come for tea.

Kevin goes to see Anna, he wants to start moving her stuff into his house. Anna thinks it's a bit soon, and Kevin gets exasperated, he feels she just keeps pushing him away. She is very hung up on the look of the skin on her legs, she says it's all dry and puckered and he'll think it's disgusting. He tells her they have to get past this, so in the end she agrees to show him.

In the Kabin, Norris is looking through a list of names when Rita comes back in with coffee, so he hides the piece of paper and tells her he was sorting through junk mail.

Anna and Kevin are sat on the sofa and she takes off her dressing gown and shows him her badly scarred back. Then she pulls up the legs of her pyjama trousers and shows him the wrinkled and scarred skin on her legs. "You're beautiful," he says, and kisses her.

Tim is in the taxi office, showing Steve and Peter a globe on a stand – it's Sally's Christmas present and it only cost him 20 quid. Steve says that he's getting Michelle a wide screen HD TV to have in the bedroom when she's feeding the baby. Tim and Peter tell him he'd better hurry and get it then, or all the bargains will be gone.

Kevin and Anna are cuddling on the sofa, she thanks him for not being disgusted and he tells her he loves her and he loves her body. She tells him she thinks she'll venture out later and go and see how Roy is. As Kevin goes off back to work, she tells him she'll start packing her stuff for the weekend.

Michelle is over in the Bistro going over menus with Robert when Zeedan comes out from the kitchen and says a large order for delivery has just arrived and he needs help. Robert agrees, and then asks Zeedan to phone Streetcars and get them to have cabs on standby. Zee tells him that he's already spoken to Peter and they haven't got any, they're busy and Steve and Tim have gone off. The order to the value of £60, with mains, desserts, the lot. Zeedan suggests that Robert takes the Bistro van, but Robert points out that he's banned from driving. "I could drive," says Michelle, and Robert says she's a life saver, and he's coming with her.

Brian is messing up the food orders in the cafe, and getting very stressed, when Anna arrives. When she sees the chaos she gets behind the counter and picks up an apron. "Let's all just calm down shall we?" she says.

Alex has marched up the stairs to see Roy, with Brian in hot pursuit. "You love my Auntie Cathy, don't you?" he asks. Roy tells him he thought he loved her, but in the end they realised they're better off as friends. "She's in bits, you've broken her heart," says Alex, and tips Roy's jigsaw puzzle on the floor.

Norris goes to see Mary in the florist's shop, dropping hints about family. Mary gets very cross with him and tells him not to keep pushing him so. Norris tells her he's done some research and found that the nurse who found Mary's son Jude lives locally, so he's made a list of all the Maureens and Judes still living in the Newton-le-Willows area. He leaves the list with her, telling her she doesn't have to look at it, and he'll never pursue the matter again, but as he leaves he turns and tells her that her mother made her give up the child out of guilt and shame, and Mary has worn that guilt and shame all her life, but it wasn't hers to bear. "Now is the time to discard it," he says, and leaves her. She unfolds the piece of paper.

Tracy goes to the garage and tells Luke that Amy saw them kissing, so she's told her that Luke is her boyfriend because she couldn't explain the 'friends with benefits' thing. She asks if he'll come for tea, but Luke says he can't because he's got a date. Tracy pleads with him to rearrange it, and says she'll make it worth his while. In the end he agrees, so she kisses him and leaves. Kevin is watching with Tyrone from inside the garage. "Did I just dream that?" he says, rushing over to Luke. "You and bloodsucker Barlow?"

Alex is back at Yasmeen's, talking to Cathy when Nessa arrives with a bottle of wine. She says that after they've drunk it they're off to town to find a bar and get flirting. "The best way to get over a man is to get under another," she tells a shocked Yasmeen. Alex gets up and leaves, saying he doesn't want to be in this conversation. Cathy then tells Nessa that she loved Roy and she has no interest in finding someone else.

Anna is in the cafe when Pat Phelan comes in. He leans over the counter in a very intimidating way and she gets very anxious and nervy. In a quiet voice he asks her what it feels like to look in the mirror and know that no one is every going to want her again, no matter what sympathetic lies they tell her. Then he tells her knows she wrote those letters, he saw her post it. "One more word and you'll have a lot more than looking like Freddy Kruger to worry about."

Robert is back in the Bistro kitchen where Zeedan remarks that he can tell Robert likes Michelle, he's seen the way he looks at her and talks to her. Robert assures him that he and Michelle are just friends.

Kevin and Tyrone arrive at the cafe just as Brian is closing up because he can't cope. Kevin says he thought Anna was helping, and Brian tells him how she was fine until Pat Phelan arrived and then she said she had to go. Kevin goes running off. As Brian and Tyrone stand there, an estate agent comes up, asking for Roy. Apparently Roy has asked for a valuation for the cafe and the flat above, he's going to put it on the market. Tyrone and Brian are stunned.

Kevin goes back to Anna's flat and asks her what happened. She starts by telling him that nothing happened, she just felt wobbly that was all. Kevin knows there's more to it and reminds her that they said no more secrets. She then tearfully confesses that she sent the poison pen letters to Phelan, she wanted him to suffer like she has. "Why should he walk away scot free? He ruins lives like other people drink tea, he always gets away with it, it's not right." "Not this time," says Kevin, and goes off to find Phelan.

Outside, Steve and Tim are trying to get a large TV out of the back of a cab. They see Kevin and call him over to help, but he says he's busy. Kevin walks round the corner and sees Pat talking to Eileen outside the yard, and he invites her in for a cuppa. Kevin stops and watches as they go inside together.

Thursday 15 December

Welcome to another extra episode of Corrie (yes, bad luck, it is me again!). It is a cold day here in London town while I am writing this report, temperatures a maximum of 8 deg C (15.4 F). I suppose you all think that is a heatwave, but I don't do cold weather!!

Anyway, let us see what tonight's episode has in store for us.

We start with Steve and Tim dragging a new television set into the cab office. All because Steve didn't want to pay extra for the delivery charge. Steve asks if Tim could look after it until Christmas. He says he can't because if Sally sees it, she will want one. He has already bought her an educational present, a globe of the world ! Then they discover Australia is not on the globe !!!

Michelle and Robert are out making the food deliveries for the Bistro, which should have been done by Streetcars. They knock on the door of a house and a guy comes out and takes the food. He is about to go inside when Robert asks for the money. He calls to his mate who he says has it. The other guy comes out and searches through his pockets and he doesn't have any money. The first guy apologises and says his mate forgot to go to the bank. Michelle tells them not to mess them around, and threatens to stay there until they give them the money. Robert tries to grab the food bag back, but the guys are not letting him. Michelle then collapses in pain shouting that she thinks the baby is coming.

At the builders' yard, Eileen asks Phelan if he spoke to Anna. He says he had a gentle word and she apologised. Eileen thinks she is lucky as if she had her way they would have gone to the police. She hopes that he will be able to find somewhere else to stay. Anna then goes off, and Kevin comes in 'guns-blazing'. He accuses Phelan of threatening Anna. Phelan responds by telling him what Anna wrote to him "You're gonna get what's coming to you". Phelan considers that a threat of violence. Kevin says he took all her self-confidence and self-respect from her. Kevin says that he is going to pay for what he did to her and Michael. Luke then comes rushing over. Phelan says it was a misunderstanding.

Back at the house for the food delivery, Michelle is still in pain, and Robert suggests he calls Steve. Michelle winks at him and says she had better go inside. The guys don't want her to come in, so Robert says give them the money and they will go. They manage to scrape some money together between them, obviously nowhere near enough. At which point Michelle jumps up and grabs the food bag. Robert drops the money back on the ground and he and Michelle run off.

At Roy's flat, Tyrone and Brian are trying to persuade Roy not to sell up and leave. Roy thought Cathy was amenable to them staying friends, but he has realised otherwise. He doesn't want to cause her any more pain. He says without him being there she won't have a visible reminder and she will be able to move on and forget about him. Brian suggests waiting a week, but Roy says he has made up his mind. He then calls over to the Estate Agent who is waiting to discuss the property details.

In the Kabin, Norris is asking Andy about the writing. He says he hasn't done much since Michael died. Norris says that grief does strange things to the mind. Meanwhile Erica has come into the shop, and overhears the conversation. She says it was similar after her divorce, but it wasn't grief, it was because she was going out celebrating! Now Mary comes in and tells Norris that she has been thinking about what he said. Erica asks what it was about, and Mary says that he has been doing some research for her. She says she has come up with a list of Maureens and Judes. She is worried that his adoptive parents may have changed his name. Noreen says they will contact all of them. Erica asks if she is trying to trace her mother. Mary says it is her son.

Back at Streetcars Tim complains he can't get to his shed because the television is stuck in there. He says he likes sitting in the shed. It is his 'man cave'. Steve offers to buy him a pint as a thanks, and Tim asks for a hotpot as well. He thinks he ought to buy Sally a tv as well, because he can't give her the globe with Australia missing! Steve shows Tim a photo of Michelle's scan which is on his key ring. Lazying back in the chair, Steve says he hopes his wife is taking it easy.

In the van, Michelle and Robert are joking about what happened. Robert thought he really was going to have to deliver a baby!` She says it was fun. Michelle is concerned that there is something wrong with Robert. He assures her there is nothing. She asks if he has found somewhere to live, but he says he is staying with his mate. She offers a spare room at the Rovers. It would put Liz in a good mood having a fit bloke around. He says he will think about it.

At the garage Kevin is telling Luke that he shouldn't have got involved. Andy wanders over and says he wants to talk to Luke. Kevin goes off for a walk and Andy asks what it was all about. Luke says he said something about what he done to Michael. Andy wants to know more, but Luke doesn't know any more. Andy then walks away pondering.

Norris, Erica and Mary are having a talk. Erica understands why she didn't want to keep the baby, but Mary says it wasn't her decision. She had her baby at home, but her mother took him away as soon as he was born. Her mother left him at the entrance to the local hospital. Mary and Norris tell Erica that the hospital called the baby Jude, and the nurse's name was Maureen. Mary thinks any attempt to trace him is like looking for a needle in a field of haystacks! Erica says that Jude isn't a common name, so if they can't find Maureen they will try looking for Judes. Mary thinks she couldn't contact him directly. She imagined a conversation of her telling him that he is her son who she abandoned 32 years ago. Whatever, Erica says now she has made the decision to try and find him, she shouldn't go back on it. Mary is worried that if they did meet, he wouldn't want to know her.

Cathy and Nessa are working their way through bottles of wine. Cathy bursts into tears. Then there is a knock on the door. It is Brian who tells her about Roy. He insists, much to Nessa's annoyance, that Cathy comes with him.

Tracy sees Luke walking towards her house and calls out of the window. She throws him a bunch of flowers saying they are beautiful. He then knocks on the door. Amy answers saying he is 10 minutes late. Tracy then comes to the door and 'accepts' the bunch of flowers saying they are beautiful. When they go inside, Amy starts to quiz Luke about his food preferences.

Cathy and Brian are walking down the street. She asks if Roy put him up to it, and he says no. He then points to the estate agent sign above the shop, and explains he is doing it for her and she should try and talk some sense into him. She is reluctant.

In the Bistro, Michelle is telling Robert that she hasn't laughed so much for ages, and can't wait to tell Steve. He then walks into the Bistro. She tells him that she has been a delivery driver because he went AWOL, and asks him where he has been. He said he had something important to do. He asks what happened, but Robert just says she saved the day. A couple of guys tried to fleece them, but she showed them 'whatfor'. Meanwhile Steph is trying to contact Andy, but to no avail. Tracy and Luke walk in together. Steph looks surprised.

Phelan is locking up the yard. He hears voices and turns round, but then continues to padlock the yard. He doesn't see Andy come up behind him. Andy coshes him over the head. Andy runs off leaving Phelan lying unconscious on the ground.

Back at the Bistro Steph begrudgingly gives Tracy and Luke a menu. Tracy and Luke chat and she says Amy likes him. She says there is no harm in letting her think they are going out. Luke says they are not. Tracy says they are having sex and going out for drinks, and wonders if there is a difference. He says he wants to see other people. She doesn't mind providing she doesn't know them.

Steve enjoys a glass of wine. Michelle tells him that she has told Robert that he can move in. Robert doesn't want to commit, but Steve thinks it is a good idea. He says he is skint at the moment, but Michelle says he can help decorate the nursery as a way of paying in kind.

Kevin goes round to see Anna. She asks about Phelan. He says he was very close to having him, but Luke pulled him off. Anna is pleased, because they don't want to give him any more ammunition. He could already have gone to the police about the letters. He says he would do anything to protect her.

Meanwhile Phelan is lying on the ground Steph wanders over and sees him, and shouts for Andy. Andy comes rushing over as she is calling for an ambulance. She asks if Andy saw anything, but he says he has been in the flat. Andy checks and confirms that he has a pulse.

So the ambulance is on its way. Will he live or will he die? Were there any witnesses? If he lives what will he remember of the incident? The next report will explain all.

Friday 16 December

We begin in the hospital where, unfortunately, Phelan isn't dead yet. The doctors says they've successfully evacuated the bleed on his brain and they hope there's no lasting damage. Todd comes in to sit with Eileen. He says she looks worn out and should go home for a while but she refuses. She tells him the anonymous letters were coming from Anna but Todd says she hasn't got the strength to whack Phelan over the head.

Andy, Luke and Steph have breakfast in the cafe. Billy's working there for a few hours. He gets a text from Todd saying Phelan will be OK. Andy thinks Luke should tell the police about Kevin being so angry. At another table, Tim mentions that he saw Kevin heading towards the yard before Phelan was found. Andy overhears this.

Anna and Kevin walk slowly in the street. Kevin says he's glad he gave Phelan "what for" yesterday. They notice a For Sale sign on Roy's flat. Izzy and Gary come past and tell them about Phelan being attacked. Anna asks Kevin what he meant by giving Phelan "what for." He laughs and says they had words, though he was tempted to get more physical. She tells him not to let the police hear him say that.

Bethany's been out for some milk (why does that household never have enough milk?) and tells the family about Phelan being beaten up. She talks to Sarah about how difficult Christmas will be - the first one without Kylie for David and the kids and one without Michael for Gail. Bethany says it would be nice to give David a treat. Sarah says she'll leave organising that to Bethany.

Adam's in Maria's flat and offers to take Liam to school. Maria doesn't want things to get too involved between them because everything's up in the air - she's got another court case to go.

Norris has made a list of all the young men called Jude who are still in Newton-le-Willows. I'm not sure how he's worked out who the young ones are. The electoral roll doesn't included ages. His gossip network must be better than I thought. He explains his list to Erica and Dev. Mary's out but comes back and says she's been out to get a new outfit - something suitable for meeting her son for the first time. She's nervous but Norris won't allow any defeatist talk. Dev thinks it will probably all come to nothing.

In the pub, Liz has lost the furniture polish. She's teased about the amount of trouble she's going to for Robert's moving in. Sarah and Adam reminisce about Candice. Chesney, Sinead and Billy come in but they have no gossip about Phelan. Sinead wants to go into town to see the lights and before you know it, a young people's night out has been arranged (including Billy) and Sarah says David could do with a night out.

In the Bistro, Steph tells the police her version of what happened. They ask her if anyone had a grudge against Phelan and she says the Windasses seem to have, but Phelan's not that popular with anyone, especially lately. Though she can't think of anyone who would want to kill him. Robert comes in. He's been out flat-hunting. He's found somewhere in Victoria Court. Steph thinks he should wait and get somewhere cheaper. The police talk to Andy. He says he didn't see anything but earlier saw Luke and Tyrone trying to calm down Kevin. This morning he overheard someone mention they saw Kevin heading for the yard. He tells them it was Tim who said it.

In the taxi office, Tim's trying to stick Australia on to the globe when the police arrive. They ask him about seeing Kevin.

Maria's cutting Izzy's hair and asking about Christmas. They talk about what it's like in prison. Maria gets a call to say Liam is sick at school. Izzy says it was the day-to-day hassles with kids that she missed most when she was inside.

The police go to see Kevin at work and he says he's got nothing to hide and they can talk there. He says he hates Phelan's guts and Phelan's lucky he didn't thump him. He's got Luke to thank for dragging him away. He says there are lots of people with grudges after the trouble over the flats. The cops leave. Andy is standing watching from some distance away.

Robert tells a disappointed Liz and Michelle that he won't be moving in.

Kirk's been to pick up Liam from school but he wasn't there. Maria forgot to tell him she'd fetched Liam earlier. She talks to Kirk about going to prison. She says she's going to take some time off work and spend as much time as she can with Liam in case she's sent to prison.

Kevin tells Anna about talking to the police. Anna thinks there will be lots of rumours and Eileen will hear what Kevin's saying about Phelan. She thinks he should go to tell Eileen he had nothing to do with it. Sarah is there and confirms there are lots of rumours about Kevin and Phelan.

Erica, Mary, Dev and Norris are in Newton-le-Willows looking for Jude. Mary and Norris knock on one door and Mary beams at the young man who opens it. They tell him they're doing a survey on sustainability. He's not interested until Mary invents a 5000-pound prize draw for people who complete the survey. He invites them in.

Anna meets Tim and Sally and talks about Kevin being grassed up. "Careless talk costs lives," she warns.

Todd gets a text from Billy about the night out. The doctor comes into the waiting area to say Phelan's coming round and things look promising. Eileen tells Todd to go and enjoy himself. Kevin comes in to tell her that if she hears a rumour that he did it, it's not true. They had a row yesterday but there was no rough stuff.

The seeing-the-lights gang are ready to go into town. Luke gets a text from Tracy and suddenly can't go. Which leaves two couples (Todd/Billy and Ches/Sinead) heading off with David tagging along behind.

Phelan's awake. The police come in to question him. He says all he knows is that someone jumped him as he was locking up. The police are asked to come back when Phelan's not so drowsy. He says he saw someone hanging round the cafe looking over towards the yard. It was Kevin Webster. "I knew it!" says Eileen. He was just here. He knows we're on to him - why else would he turn up here claiming he's innocent!"

The end
Margaret Carr

Hello. Went away for a night this week to the Crazy Bear in Stadhampton. Crazy name - crazy place. Had an excellent meal in the Thai restaurant - Gloucester Old Spot ribs followed by a chicken green curry. Nice to have a break away. Anyway it is busy on the Street as we head towards Christmas. I will be with you a little later than normal next week as I will be covering the Saturday episode on Christmas Eve; we do not get many Saturday excursions.

This is episode 9059 and it was penned by Mark Wadlow; the director was Brett Fallis; copyright remains the property of ITV (hmm in reality that should probably be itv to match their corporate image) to whom many thanks for allowing this rendering of their work.

We open away from the Street, in a strange house where Norris and in rather excitable mode Mary are quizzing a bearded lad called Jude. They are quizzing him on sustainability - but Mary pushes at the boundaries and discovers he is a musician - and plays in a band for a living. The drummer Naz is rubbish but they cannot sack him - he has the van! Apparently the lad is good with a guitar - he finds he is telling his life story (which of course is what Mary wants to hear). He is also keen on saving the planet.

The scene moves to Weatherfield General where the patient - Pat has a bandaged head and an oxygen supply to his nose. [I have remarked before that this oxygen feed seems to be unique to Corrie and not found in other hospitals on tv, or real life come to that - why?]. Eileen is at his bedside (almost climbing in) and she will be treating him like a king when he comes home. She retracts her earlier statement wanting him out. Things like this make you realise what is important. She still loves him and wants to marry him (poor deluded woman). He says he loves her too! He sweet talks her. Pat is not completely sure it was the Manic Kev or not. He is tired - but before she goes he asks her to ensure that Andy and Steph drop in and see him so that he can thank them. She agrees to pass on the request.

Norris is now asking about solar panels on the roof. No - he is only a tenant. Next question? Mary asks if he had a happy childhood! He is not sure what that has to do with sustainability. Norris covers - they need to collect background information. He says it is not a simple yes/no answer. Mary then asks if he has any unanswered questions about where he came from. He asks if they are Bible bashers - not says Mary but we do bring good news - well she hopes it will be good news. She moves to sit next to him and tells Jude that this might be a bit of a shock - but she thinks she is his birth mother. He looks confused.

Bethany is sitting with Granny Gail reviewing the films on the box over Xmas. Gran is not bothered about what they watch - David always wants something different to everybody else. Bethany hopes he is having a good time as it is his first night out. Sarah comes downstairs - but Bethany no longer wants to go and wants to stay with Gran. Bethany observes that Sarah only wants to go so she can hang out with Gary. Sarah denies it is a date - Jake and Izzy and Harry are going - two families together. Bethany makes it clear she does not want to leave Gran on her own.

Mary has waited for this day for a long time. She always thought her child would be musical. Jude is still confused and is still trying to work out what is going on. He reckons it is mad. Norris does try to calm Mary down - with little success. Norris denies being the father - just a friend. But he has been urging her to find her son. So you are sure that the mother who brought me up is not actually my mum? Norris says they did considerable research. Mary tells again how she was forced to give up the baby. Jude asks "Us up?" and at that moment a Jude looky-likey appears from the kitchen asking where the bin bags are as there are none in the drawer. Jude introduces his twin brother Jamie. Jude explains Mary's theory to Jamie. Mary is almost horror struck as she sees that they are indeed twins.

Gran Gail is getting out Michael's Christmas presents because she always does her shopping early. She took them out of the cupboard and stuffed them under the bed when Michael died. She starts crying. Bethany says she will help sort the clothes. Gail laments that they only had one Christmas together. And Michael was a big kid - up early and shouting that "he's been"! The ham she bought they were still eating in February. Then Gail recalls Fred Elliott - I say she recalls Fred Elliott - on Victoria Street - going back years with a big, booming voice, I say a big booming voice, and if you ordered a joint of meat he would say (she matches Fred's delivery) "And how many of you will be going at it?". Gail is not sure how she is going to get through these next few weeks. Bethany puts her arm around Gail's shoulder and hugs her close.

At the Bistro Steve, Michelle and Robert are finishing a drink. Andy sees Eileen come in and dashes over to her for news joined by Steph. She tells them her belief that Kevin was responsible and that Pat is recovering but groggy. She passes on the request from Pat that they should pop in and see if possible. Andy does not want to go - but Robert has been listening and says that Andy can go - they will manage without him and Steph. Steph insists that Andy should come as well. Andy has little choice.

After the break we are still in the Bistro where Michelle has just taken a call from her wedding client, Clare Prentice who has just cut the catering budget by half she tells Robert. So 200 people at 12 pounds a head. Given it is a business discussion Steve goes - the client wants the new menu in the morning. Steve departs hoping the two of them will make him rich someday. Michelle follows up on Robert moving into a flat in Victoria Court - but he says there was someone else in the frame who dropped out.

Two police officers are talking to Kevin and Anna - Pat has regained consciousness but is unsure who attacked him. Pat has given details of the argument with Kevin and alleges seeing Kevin staring at him - but Kevin was in and out of the cafe and has an explanation. Anna admits that Kevin does not like Pat - but did not beat him up. The questions continue and Anna is always the first to answer to defend him.

Bethany suggests that put the clothes in a bar to take to the charity shop. Or perhaps put it on ebay? Gail wants to keep his aftershave. She will spray it on her pillow. Sarah has returned with Harry as it was too cold - but the others are still there. Gail tells Sarah that Bethany has been a great help sorting out the presents. In return Sarah thanks Gail for all of the things she has done for all them - and David is starting to live a normal life again. Equally Gail is thankful for their efforts in recent weeks. They all have a big cuddle.

The scene shifts to a nightclub. Chesney is worrying about getting home. Sinead merely wants to boogie. It is only about 8 o'clock says Sinead. Chesney is also moaning about the prices - Todd's Jaeger bomb was six quid. She drags him off to the dance floor leaving David to mind the chairs. Immediately a girl with longish brown hair, red skirt and Santa hat sits on the stool. She asks if he is the chair police, asserts she is a lady and asks him where his manners have gone - he denies having any. Her feet are killing her as her shoes are too small and David says she can stay until the others return. Due to a fight one of the basins has come away from the wall and the toilet is now awash. She says she is waiting for a mate - but she has not turned up - so high, dyed blonde hair, plumpish. Apparently they are meeting in U Bar - and David confirms she is in the right place. She notes his demeanour and he tells her that it has not been a good year really. She has had a great year, just like the previous 28 she says with a downbeat tone. She tells him he supposed to say that she does not look that old! He tells her he is just not really up for chatting. He turns away and she gives a glance saying she thinks otherwise.

Eileen arrives to see Pat and tell him that he has visitors. It is the good Samaritans. He thanks them for saving his life. Andy does not look happy. He will be buying the drinks when he gets out. Eileen repeats her belief that it was Kevin - but Pat still says it was all a blur. They repeat their stories. Pat pretends he remembers someone behind him at the yard - but it goes nowhere.

Norris is more positive than Mary - but she calls it a total fiasco and she has never felt so humiliated. Norris knows her son is out there somewhere. She thinks the day has been wasted. She also does not know what she has done to deserve such a good friend. Norris then asks if she is sure that she did not have twins! After all Mary you can be a bit away with the fairies at the best of times. She is sure. She says she remembers every painful second as if it was yesterday. She held the baby for a few seconds and enjoyed the joy of a new life before the shame kicked in and she took him away. And it felt just like that again today she adds, a moment of deluded joy and then emptiness. Indeed humiliation. Norris does not want to give up - but Mary is not prepared to go through it again.

Sinead is bopping away with abandon. Chesney is swaying in the wind she causes. Strange girl and David watch and call Chesney a zombie. Her phone rings. She answers and tells the caller that this dead nice bloke is chatting her up. Apparently the mate is in Subway. She stands and hugs him, kissing his head and as she moves away says Merry Christmas. Todd and Billy want water and David offers to buy the drinks as his round. Then he finds his wallet missing and starts searching around - but it seems that the girl must have lifted it as she kissed him. [I double checked the action but could not actually see it being removed].

Sarah is with Gail saying that Bethany will be thrilled - but she is not yet telling her the surprise. Then she reveals they are to see the "Nightworkers" the following night in Leeds. Four of them - Bethany, Sarah, Faye and Gary.

Norris in the shop is trying to get someone to make an exception to the rule. It is about Mary Taylor and her son Jude. Gemma creeps down and removes a couple of boxes of chocolates from the shelf. She is eavesdropping. In 1984 he was left at St Jude's hospital. Norris gets nowhere with the call. Gemma says that Rita sent her down for the chocolates. They are having a Bond night. She denies eavesdropping! [PS If Chesney is being a zombie and Gemma is at home who is looking after the kebab shop?]. Gemma says they never normally pay for anything! Then she asks about Mary giving away a baby. Norris explains that Mary's mother insisted. And Gemma must keep it a secret (little chance of that I think). Her lips are sealed until the choccies are open!

In Pat's apparently private room (not on an open ward?) Eileen and Steph go for a drink. Pat recounts his flashbacks, the pain when he crumpled and of course he saw Andy - idiot. He told the police it was Kevin because he likes messing with Kev - but he has bigger plans for Andy. From now on Andy does just what Pat says (remember Simon says - well this is "Pat says"). Come back tomorrow or Pat will call the cops. He continues to threaten Andy with the police until he agrees.

Roll credits.

There is actually a band called Nightworkers apparently! Bethany is doing all she can to avoid being with Gary - so what will happen?

How will Andy get on working for Pat - will it all prove too much?

And Norris is obviously not going to let the search for Jude drop - so will there be a happy reunion come Christmas?

Has David pulled? Well at the moment she is credited as "Shona Ramsey" played by Julia Goulding and online there are claims that she can dance the flamenco and has some circus skills with various voice over credits. I get the feeling she will be returning ere long.

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Monday 19 December

Written by Ella Greenhill Directed by Diana Patrick

Sarah's looking forward to the concert (aka "gig") in Leeds though Bethany's anticipating her mother will embarrass the life out of her. Gary pops by to tell them he's booked a hotel, pleasing Sarah. But all the affection being shown is only putting Bethany in a bad mood. Later, Sarah is jostling Harry and tells David that the baby is poorly and David then tells them that his wallet was nicked and he's gutted because there were pictures of Kylie in it. Later, David goes back to the bar to find out that the woman, Shona, has form for robbing people. The good news is that she's in the bar most nights so David decides to wait. When she shows up, she then pretends to be someone else and pretends as well that even if she had taken his wallet, she wouldn't be so stupid as to keep hold of it.

Gary arrives and is disappointed when Sarah says they can't go because of the baby's illness. She reckons they should go anyway and Gary insists Bethany go with he and Faye so that makes her day.

In the hotel room, Faye is necking mini bar shots and Bethany is trying on slinky dresses and the two girls bicker. Bethany's beverage of choice is voddy in a purple glittery flask. She unzips her dress and goes through to the adjoining room to Gary's room and waits for him to come out of the shower to get her dress zipped. That accomplished, she manages to persuade him that it's ok for her to have a beer, that her mother never minds.

Back home, Harry's improving and Sarah asks Gail if she'd mind Harry. She can just make the concert if she leaves now. Oh you can see where this is going, can't you? In the hotel, Bethany fortifies her nerve while doing her makeup and complains about her looks so that Gary will compliment her. The ploy works. He sidesteps her questions about whether he loves Sarah and that only gives her more encouragement. He nips out, giving her a non-alcoholic drink and she jumps on the bed, draping herself seductively, hair down, waiting for him to return. The door opens but it's Faye, not Gary. Uh oh!

Gemma is making a video about Mary's baby being left in 1984 at the hospital, that his name is Jude and she's looking for him. Gemma's really into this, really sincere in hoping that Mary can find her son. I think this is probably her idea, not sanctified by Mary or Norris who was supervising the hunt. He comes into the kebab shop and she hides her phone quickly. It transpires that yes, yes she's doing this of her own accord because Norris tries to impress upon her the need for secrecy. I don't think he was supposed to have told Gemma but she tells him social media is the way to do it. He's not keen but she's got plans and uploads the video.

She then collars a few of the younger set, Bethany and Seb to ask them to share it. Faye's not happy to see Seb talking to the pretty blonde Bethany, and not best pleased when he expresses admiration for her after indicating that Faye wouldn't be a party girl up for anything like Bethany probably would. Naturally, she objects and is going to want to prove it at some point.

Andy now has a lot on his mind but he won't tell Steph. He pretends it's just the trauma of finding Pat. Steph wonders if Kevin really could have done the deed. Andy has to obey the call of his phone and nips outside. Phelan, of course, summoning him so he pretends he's getting a migraine. When he gets to the hospital, Phelan looks so chipper, I would have thought he'd have been released. Anyway, they banter a bit and Phelan sends him for tea and cake before revealing what he wants. And what he wants is cash and he suggests Andy rob the Bistro to get it.

Peter's advising Simon on his football game along with Leanne. They chat about being a parent, about Ken's recovery and she's kind to him, offering her shoulder as a mate. Adam arrives, dressed to impress. Maria, so he hopes. Peter remarks that Adam is only looking for one thing but he's looking for the "real deal". Audrey later warns Adam off Maria since Maria is having a tough time. She thinks he's out to take advantage of Maria's current vulnerability. That gives Adam a bit of a knockback but he goes to see Maria anyway. She's kept Liam home and they're making cookies and his suggestion that she could park him in front of the telly while they indulge in some bedroom Olympics only gets him knocked back again for being so presumptuous.

Faye confronts Bethany who, to use Faye's words, is lying on Gary's bed "lookin' well slutty". Before she has time to answer, Gary comes in. A flustered Bethany offers to do Faye's make-up and let her borrow her new top – anything to get her to keep quiet.

Back on the street Maria is regretting keeping Liam off school. She tells Kirk she wanted to spend time with him in case she gets sent down but it's backfired and now they've fallen out and he's missed the school Christmas party. Kirk says it's not too late and offers to take him.

Somewhere in a back alley we see the girl who stole David's wallet retrieve it from a bin. She opens it, takes out the photo of Kylie and looks at it thoughtfully.

There are no flies on Faye – she knows exactly what Bethany had in mind for Gary. So when Bethany has a swig of her illicit flask of vodka, she has no choice but to let Faye have some too, or risk her telling tales.

Andy returns to work where things are getting busy. Nick asks him to move a large box of computer tablets which are in the way. He tells Andy they were supposed to send four of them for the new ordering system but the 'dozy beggars' delivered twenty-four by mistake.

Gemma is in the Bistro, studying the menu and talking to Mary who is doing the flower arrangements. She starts a cryptic conversation with her on the subject of the pop group Busted but what she is really trying to tell Mary is that some things are meant to be together and are more important in life than others. Gemma emphasises the point with a big wink.

Up in Leeds Gary, Bethany and Faye are having dinner. Faye has been enjoying Bethany's vodka and can't resist winding her up. She tells Gary that Bethany has her eye on an older man, the same age as him. Bethany is mortified and Gary tells Faye to shut up. Faye goes back to the room in a huff.

With the prospect of being sent to prison looming over her, Maria is drowning her sorrows in the Rovers. Adam comes in and sees an opportunity to try his luck. Maria is about to turn him down but when she sees Aidan watching, invites Adam to join her.

Now that Gary and Beth are alone he questions her about the older man. He runs through the possibilities of who it might be then tells Bethany he doesn't want someone taking advantage of her. She says he's not like that but Gary says all men are. "You're not," replies Bethany looking Gary straight in the eye.

Bethany is on the point of saying more when who should arrive but Sarah. She's in high spirits now that she can enjoy a night away after all. Bethany is speechless. Before any more is said one of the hotel staff arrives with Faye in tow. He found her wandering the hotel with Bethany's flask of vodka. Faye announces she feels sick.

Back on the street Kirk has taken Liam for his first doner kebab. While Gemma serves them she asks Kirk if he'll re-tweet her appeal to find Mary's long lost son. He agrees to do it although he doesn't think Mary will be best pleased having her private business announced to the world.

In the Bistro Leanne is talking to Nick about Peter and says that she'd forgotten how lovely he can be at times. Nick doesn't look like he agrees.

Behind the bar Andy gets a threatening text message from Phelan. It makes him look so ill that Leanne insists he should go home.

David comes in and asks his brother for a large drink. He tells Nick he's found the 'skank of a woman' who stole his wallet but she's denied it.

Back in the Rovers Maria is still drinking with Adam. Michelle and Audrey try telling her she's had enough but Maria is beyond caring. Aidan tries having a quiet word while she's up at the bar on her own and Maria responds by asking him to stay the night. He says he's sorry but he can't. Maria drunkenly replies that sorry is no good because sorry isn't going to hold her while she falls asleep at night. Adam comes up to the bar and Maria pointedly asks him to take her into town and tells the assembled company that if she wants to drink herself stupid then she will.

Rita, Audrey, Norris, Erica and Mary discuss Maria. Rita says it's Liam she feels sorry for if Maria goes to prison and comments that children need their mothers.

Over by the bar, Michelle sees that Amy has re-tweeted Gemma's video appeal. She plays it back on her phone and everyone can hear it. Gemma begs Michelle to turn it off but it's too late - Mary has heard every word. She asks Gemma how she could have been so cruel and wants to know who told her the secret. Norris looks totally shamefaced. Mary leaves the Rovers and Norris hurries after her.

Mary stands on the doorstep of Dev's where she tells Norris how upset she is at what he's done. He insists he wasn't gossiping for once and that Gemma overheard him on the phone but, as far as Mary's concerned, he's betrayed her. She tells him their friendship is over and he must never talk to her again.

Meanwhile in Leeds Faye is suffering the effects of drinking. As she passes out on the bed, Bethany admits to Sarah and Gary that she was the one who gave her the vodka.

Back on the street we see Steph locking up the Bistro for the night. The moment she walks away, Andy slips out of the shadows, unlocks the door and switches off the burglar alarm. We see him start to fill a bag with the unwanted laptop computers.

In Leeds Gary is taking Bethany to task over the vodka. Sarah points out that Faye is fourteen so she's not entirely blameless then she takes over interrogating Bethany. Bethany says that as well as the vodka and some drinks from the mini bar she had a glass of wine with Gary. Now it's Gary's turn to get the sharp end of Sarah's tongue for being so irresponsible when he was meant to be looking after the girls. She announces that Bethany is bunking in with her while Gary can share the other room with his drunken sister.

Andy slips out of the Bistro. He closes the door without resetting the alarm then hides in the shadows as a very drunk Maria and Adam come weaving their way down the street.

Wednesday 21 December

Kirk brings Liam back to Maria's flat, to find she's in her dressing gown. She asks Liam if he's had a good time, and Kirk, looking at her clothing that's strewn around the floor, remarks that it looks like she's had a good time too. Just then Adam comes out of the bathroom wielding a toothbrush, telling Maria she's out of toothpaste. When he's gone home, Kirk tells Maria that now he realises why she wanted him to have Liam for the night.

Steph and Andy arrive at the Bistro to find a policewoman just leaving. Zeedan tells them there's been a robbery. Robert tells them that the tablets that were stolen were worth about 9k, and it they're not covered by insurance as it would seem that someone forgot to lock up and put the alarm on. Steph is sure she did, but Robert points out that there was no sign of a break-in so she must've forgotten. She apologises to Robert, but he's not having any of it and tells her to go home, she's suspended until further notice. Andy protests that Robert can't do that, but he says he can - unless Andy has got nine grand?

Nick is in the cafe with Leanne and Simon when Robert rings him to tell him about the break-in. He stands up and rushes straight over there.

Gary and Faye are in the cafe, and he's giving her a list of jobs to do around the house. She balks at cleaning the toilet, but he tells her he can always tell Anna she got drunk. Just then Bethany comes in and starts to try to apologise to Gary, he just gets up and walks out, telling Faye the jobs must be done by tonight. Bethany sits down with Faye and tells her that Sarah is livid with her. Faye says she's really sorry, and thanks her for taking the blame. She then goes on to say how she wouldn't really have told her mum about Bethany liking Gary, she was just jealous when she saw Bethany talking to Seb before the gig. Bethany tells her they were just talking, she prefers her men slightly older, and asks if Faye thinks Gary and Sarah will make up. Faye reckons it doesn't look hopeful, and Bethany can't stop the little smirk that appears on her face.

Over in the factory, Kirk tells Beth how he found Adam Barlow in Maria's flat earlier. Beth thinks she was just trying to distract herself from thinking about the court hearing tomorrow.

Billy and Todd are in the cafe. Billy is about to go for an interview and he's nervous, but Todd is confident he'll be fine.

Steph, Zeedan and Andy are sitting at another table. She's cross with herself but Andy tells her to stop blaming herself. "Who else is there to blame?" she asks and tells them she thinks she should hand in her notice. They both protest, Zeedan tells her that Robert will cool down, she just needs to give him time.

Maria and Liam have returned from the park and settle down to watch a dvd. They snuggle on the sofa and she kisses his head, looking thoughtful.

Leanne is waddling down the Street as if she's 9 months pregnant with triplets, with Simon by her side, on the phone to Nick about the break-in. They then come face to face with each other. Nick has acquired to tickets to the match and hands them to Simon, who is delighted and says he'll ask his dad if he'll come. Leanne points out that Nick would actually like to go, and there's an awkward pause for a moment, until Nick says it's fine. Simon hugs him and hurries off.

Gary sees Sarah walking along with heavy bags of shopping and asks if she needs a hand. She's frosty with him and points out she trusted him with her daughter. He says he knows, and he made a mistake, but he also trusted Bethany, Faye is just a kid, Bethany's almost an adult. Sarah admits that she's possibly being a bit over-protective, and starts to smile. "Is Christmas back on then?" asks Gary, and grabs her and kisses her, watched by Bethany through the window.

Maria has dozed off on the sofa, and doesn't stir when Liam says he's hungry and asks what's for tea. He goes into the kitchen and puts a pan on the stove and turns on the gas. Then he finds a packet of crisps and takes that back to the sofa, while the unlit gas hisses into the kitchen.

Aidan and Eva are in the pub when Todd asks if they'd like to come to town for the evening with him and Billy. Eva is up for it, but Aidan isn't keen so he tells her to go.

Kirk and Beth are in the pub, and he's worrying about Maria, wondering if he should go and check on her. Beth is sure she's fine and wouldn't thank him for it.

Luke is walking down the Street when he gets a text message from Tracy telling him to come over, everyone is out. Just then he spots Bethany sitting on the bench looking miserable, so he goes over and, slipping his arm across her shoulders, asks if she's ok. This is noted by Norris who is walking along on the other side. Bethany tells Luke she's fine, but when he presses her, she hesitantly starts to tell him it's about a lad. However, Luke has other things on his mind and is already on his feet. As he goes over to Tracy's house, a bus pulls up and Bethany gets on it.

Kirk has not heeded Beth's advice and gone over to Maria's flat, where he finds the gas on. He turns the stove off, tells Liam to go and wait outside the door, and wakes Maria up, hustling her out of the flat.

Andy has taken the stolen tablets to Phelan in hospital, but he's not impressed. Andy says as far as he's concerned, they're done, but Pat has other ideas. He gives Andy a phone number of someone who will buy the tablets, and tells Andy to bring him the cash. Andy tries to refuse, but Pat threatens to ring the police, so he does as he's told.

Maria and Liam are back at Kirk's house. She's tearful, realising that Liam could have died while she slept off her hangover. She says she should go to prison, he'd be better off without her. She weeps, saying she's terrified. Kirk is kind and reassuring and makes her drink a cup of tea.

Gary and Sarah are watching tv and wondering where Bethany is. Sarah tries ringing her but there's no answer. She also realises that Bethany hasn't got a coat with her and it's cold outside. Gary goes off to look for her, while Sarah rings Bethany's friends.

Kirk tells Maria they'll have a big family lunch together tomorrow, so that when she goes into court it will be like they are all with her.

Kirk goes back to the pub and tells Beth about Maria and the gas. Aidan hears and tells Kirk and Beth that Maria was hungover because Adam was plying her with drinks last night. Kirk gets up and tells Adam to stay away from his sister, but just gets told to keep his nose out. He lunges for him, but Aidan grabs his arm and tells him to calm down. Adam then remarks that Maria was gagging for it, so Aidan turns round and hits him instead!

The two of them burst out of the pub door, just as Luke is leaving Tracy's. Maria and Liam come walking along too, at that moment and she's shocked to hear that Aidan hit Adam. He tells her he heard what happened and she sees his hand which is looking pretty sore now. She tells him to come back to the flat and she'll sort it out for him.

Gary has searched everywhere but been unable to find Bethany, and Sarah tells him that none of her friends have seen her either. Sarah decides to phone the police.

Back in Maria's flat, she's put Liam to bed and given Aidan frozen peas to put on his hand. She tells him she wasn't planning on seeing Adam again anyway and he's glad about that. "There's better blokes around," he says. "The trouble is, they're taken," she says. Then he tells her he can't stop thinking about her, he loves her. "It's such a mess, what are we going to do?" he asks. Maria doesn't know, but says she loves him too. They sink back on to the sofa, kissing.

Friday 23 December

Hello, Here's the only Friday episode.

Eva's wrapping a present - a face massager. Aidan tells her that if it's for Jenny she'll need two of them. It's not, it's for Maria. Eva feels guilty for encouraging Maria to come clean about the sham marriage. But Aidan says Maria really had no option. Eva asks him why he was so late back last night and he says he was finishing off some work at the factory.

Andy's got a headache so is going to see the doctor. As he and Steph leave the flat, flowers are delivered for her from Pat. She's off shopping and wants Andy to put them in some water.

Tracy objects to Simon being dragged all the way to Liverpool on Christmas Day. Gosh, yes, it must be at least 30 miles. Peter's in a very good mood. He doesn't mind them calling today Christmas Day, but it's a shame Amy's gone to the pantomime. Adam comes in. His face is sore and he determined to get revenge on Aidan.

The police are in David's house taking down a description of Bethany. She's not the first girl her age to spend a night away from home after a row, the tell Sarah. Gary pipes up and says he believes Bethany's been seeing an older man. This is a big surprise to Sarah and when the police leave she looks furious.

Kirk's at Maria's being all optimistic about the sentencing. But Maria says her barrister has made it quite clear what is the likely outcome.

In the street, Nick and Leanne remind Simon to look pleased when he opens the gift from Ken. Apparently last year a toilet was built in Tanzania in his honour.

Steve wonders whether he and Michelle should go to Maria's - he doesn't think it's appropriate to be wishing her a merry Christmas. He promises Michelle he won't run out of her and heads over to the taxi office, where Tim is fretting about his globe gift for Sally. Steve orders him to deliver the 55 inches of viewing pleasure for Michelle. Unfortunately, Steve won't be able to help him lift the telly because he has to be at Maria's.

Norris has used half a packet of Vim this morning, scrubbing the paperboy. That's the model, not the invisible boy who has taken over from Chesney or Craig or whoever we last saw doing the job. Norris won't say exactly what was done to the paperboy but says it's no wonder he looks surprised. Gary asks him if he's seen Bethany and Norris says he saw her on Maxine's bench yesterday. Luke had his arm round her.

A card from the Tile Street Tandoori has arrived and Todd puts it with the one from the dentist. Billy's disappointed that none of his old parishioners have sent cards this year, nor invited him around for sherry and shortbread. He gets an email from the rehab centre - he's got the job.

Si's now responsible for a beekeeper being trained in Uganda. Daniel promises he'll like his gift better - it's the complete works of Shakespeare. Another gift appears but Peter snatches it and puts it away. He won't say who it's for. Tracy says it felt like a cassette and it better not be one of hers!

At Maria's, it's mentioned that Liz and Amy have gone to see a panto starring Keith Chegwin. YAY!! (If the name's not familiar to you, that's the name of the actor who played Michael). Jenny says Johnny's in a meeting. Kate can't stop apologising to Maria for the way she treated her. Eva and Aidan arrive.

Simon opens a game for his console. Peter's quite proud that he's done his research and Leanne said he definitely didn't have this one. Simon says he doesn't. But he's finished the game at a mate's, on his games console. Peter's not put out. He's kept the receipt. Nick presents Simon's with his gift - it's a drone with all sorts of gears and angles and a 4GB camera. Leanne is not pleased.

They're playing party games at Maria's. Eva tells her to put her feet up. Eva will do the dishes and needs no help from Aidan. He says that if he's not needed he might go to the factory for half an hour. Craig asks after his hand and wonders if it's sore after punching Adam.

Simon and Nick are in the street with the drone. Leanne takes Nick aside to attack him for going out of his way to embarrass Peter. Nick denies this and says he was just trying to cheer up Simon. Leanne says he was trying to rub Peter's nose in it. Nick denies it a bit more then admits he was trying to prove that he's the better man and Peter's a waste of space. Leanne tells him that in that case he shouldn't accept Peter's hospitality. Nick walks away as Peter comes outside.

Maria arrives at the factory to meet Aidan. She's lied and told everyone she'd run out of something. They hug. "Oh, Aidan, it's such a mess. . ." she says. They both feel terrible about Eva but Maria doesn't know what she'd do if she didn't have this to hold on to. They kiss.

Eva asks about Aidan slugging Adam. The others tell her Adam was being awful about Maria. Craig gets a phone call and he agrees to do a job for a tenner. He says Tim needs a hand and leaves the gathering. When Beth's annoyed, Steve defends Craig, leading Michelle to ask what it's got to do with him. Johnny comes in and is told Aidan's at the factory and Maria's just slipped out to the shop.

At the Barlows' it's dishes time. Peter says he'll help Leanne. They've got the dishes down to a fine art with excellent teamwork. In the kitchen, he tells her he knows Nick's playing games but he's well past that sort of thing himself. That's not what makes him happy these days. Leanne asks what does.

The Metcalf and Son van pulls up and Tim and Craig open the side door and inspect the enormous TV. It's packaging is a little damp from the shed but he tells Craig the telly itself with still be fine. They lift it out of the van and, of course, the TV falls right through the damp carton and shatters on the cobbles. "Oh dear, oh dear!" mutters Norris, offering a brush and shovel.

Gary spots Luke outside the garage and races over to him. Kevin has to drag him off. Fay watches as Gary demands to know where Bethany is.

Peter's out in the yard booking a hotel room for Mr Barlow and Miss Battersby.

Andy really did go to see the doctor. He explains he's had these headaches ever since Michael died. The doctor suggests grief counseling before the receptionist interrupts and Andy is left alone in the room with the doctor's bag.

Aidan and Maria snog, though she says there's no future in it. In a few hours she'll be off to prison. Aidan says he's stick of sneaking around and it's not fair on Eva. After Maria's left for court, he's going to tell Eva it's over. Neither of them know Johnny has come in and is watching through the blinds as they snog. Maria and Aidan separate, with one set to leave by the front door and one by the back. Johnny stops Aidan and tells him what he saw. "I love her, Dad. I've tried not to," says Aidan. Johnny warns him it will break Eva's heart.

The end.

Saturday 24 December

Welcome. By the time you read this Christmas will be over. This will be the first complete Christmas and New Year for which we have been at home since about 2009. So we have seen the family rather more than usual. I am not sure if it will all be sweetness and light on the Street tomorrow night - clearly some stories are coming to the boil.

This is episode 9064 and it was written by Chris Fewtrell. The director was Diana Patrick. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open outside Kev's garage. Luke is being accused of abducting Bethany and there is some pushing and shoving by Gary. Kev is trying to keep the peace and Faye is protesting Luke's innocence without giving anything away when Bethany appears in the background manifestly not hurt. Gary apologises. Gary hustles Bethany away home. She spent the night at a friend but the latter had not let on where she was when phoned.

Johnny is asking Aidan if he has thought through dumping Eva for Maria. Aidan says he will wait for her and take care of the kid and do the school runs and put out the bins asks Johnny? Aidan says yeah - although he has not really thought it through. Johnny realises that Aidan cannot make a decision as he still has feelings for Eva. Aidan says he wants to do the right thing. Johnny says he need to think carefully before making a move. Johnny adds helpfully that Maria is a mess and has more baggage than an airport carousel. Eva is kind, loyal and gorgeous and would crawl over broken glass to be with Aidan. Johnny would not be quick to chuck that away.

At the Grimshaws Billy has been visited by his replacement who has delivered many cards from his recent parishioners. he shows Todd some mince pies which had been delivered. Billy is pleased to realise that he was not just a dog collar. Todd agrees saying that the new job will prove it.

Maria returns to the party - Kate, Jenny, Beth, Michelle, Steve, Eva and Kirk who is asking after the stuffing. She says Dev had run out and so went to Tile Street who only had the cheap stuff so she left it. In her absence Kirk and Eva have dished up. Eva is not at all worried that Maria has been a long time. She is worried about why Aidan is spending so much time in the factory.

At the Platt house Bethany is telling Gary she is sorry. Sarah is doing the screaming mother act. Apparently Gail is looking for Bethany at the Trafford Centre amongst all the mayhem. Bethany jokes that she can do her Christmas shopping! Bethany just admits to feeling stupid after everything that had happened in Leeds. All she knew is that she wanted to get away. She reminds Sarah that she is sixteen. Sarah reminds her that only a few days ago Michael went missing and who is the older man? Gary said he had to tell Sarah as he is not keeping secrets. Bethany denies there is an older man - she made it up to look big in front of Faye. Sarah repeatedly calls her stupid. Gary just shakes his head at Bethany.

Andy is walking out of the surgery and meets Luke who wants to know why he was seeing the doctor. Andy was getting medicine for his migraines. The doctor has given him a prescription.

A game of Trivial Pursuit is being started at Number One. Ken, Peter, Leanne, Daniel, Simon, Tracy and Adam all participating. Peter expects Ken to win easily as usual, unless Daniel is a dark horse. There is a knock at the door - it is Nick and in front of Leanne he makes an apology to Peter. He admits to feeling insecure. Peter is Simon's dad and Nick does not want to get in the way of that. He wants Simon to be happy. Peter tells him that all previous happenings are water under the bridge. They shake hands and Peter invites him to join watching the game. Leanne mouths a "thank you" at Peter.

With everyone apart from Kirk having gone, Maria is trying to explain to Liam Junior about needing to go away. He asks if she is going to prison and she says she probably is. Kirk and Beth will be looking after him. She will be back as soon as she can be. And then she will never leave him again because he is the most precious thing she has. They hug and the Maria gives him a snow globe from Llandudno recalling their time there as a good memory to get him through their time apart. Kirk is watching throughout.

Tim and Craig carry a 55 inch tv into Sal's living room and put it on the sofa. Tim is not leaving another one in the van - he has spent an hour going round the shops for a replacement. Sal comes in behind them and is very pleased with her Christmas present as she thought Tim was going to give her the globe she had found in the loft. She tells him to unpack it and get it set up. It is Smart and is 55 inches of pure viewing pleasure. Tim has dug himself a huge hole.

Steve, Michelle, Kate, Jenny and Johnny are seeing Maria off. She asks if Johnny has seen Aidan - he says he did and that he is with Eva now. Kirk says they have to go. They climb into a StreetCar and depart and Aidan sees the cab go past. He heads towards Eva's flat.

After the break he walks into the flat - and Eva is distressed before Aidan says "We have to talk". Eva has forgotten Maria's prison bag containing a onesie, tablet with a box set and lots of cigarettes for "snout". (Too much "Porridge"). Eva says she will deliver it on visiting day. Aidan tells her that Maria will not be allowed such things in prison. She cries unable to face the sentencing. She asks what he wants to talk about - but he says it is not important. He tells her she has been a good friend to Maria.

Ken has a sports question for his last wedge. Who scored England's five goals against Cyprus at Wembley in 1975. Not Ken's strong point. He guesses Paul Gascoigne. They all laugh and Peter tells him it was Supermac. Even he cannot believe it was Harold MacMillan - and Malcolm MacDonald is the right answer. Leanne gets an entertainment question and both she and Peter instantly answer "Bros", with Tracy knowing the answer as well. Peter admits they listened to Bros when they were stuck in the car park. Leanne admits to being a Brosette back in the day. And so was Tracy who used to fantasize about Matt and Luke and her together until Ken interrupts. Si would like to know what a Brosette is. Fans of Bros of course. Peter asks if Leanne had the ripped jeans to match and she laughs whilst Nick is riled by their closeness.

Billy is working on cards for his former flock and Todd has printed off details of the drug centre for Billy's interview. Todd tells him they will not arrive before Christmas. Billy will leave them with the new vicar at the church. Billy is writing long messages in each card. Todd reminds him he is no longer vicar. Billy assures Todd he will not be asking for his job back. Billy has made his decision and it will stick.

In court the defense lawyer is making a very poor job of seeking clemency for Maria. The judge dons a black cap and sentences Maria - to set an example to others - to death by hanging, sorry 12 months. (BTW maximum penalty is 2 years and consequently Maria's sentence seems unjustly harsh as she had pleaded guilty). She would normally serve half that sentence providing she is of good behaviour whilst incarcerated. She is taken down.

Steve is on the switch when Tim and Craig turn up to tell him that the tv was dropped and got broken. It is not insured. Tim says he will pay Steve back, eventually - but Steve has no money to get Michelle another present. Tim has a solution and Craig makes a hasty exit. Tim shows Steve the globe.

Gary and Sarah are huggled together watching tv. Bethany appears behind them. She dives into her bag and grabs a load of pills (diet presumably) which she swallows.

Tracy lets Nick into Number One, everyone has dispersed and Ken has gone to bed. Tracy goes out as well and Nick immediately looks into the drawer for the present. The card says "To the love of my life! Peter xxx" and Nick "knows" it is intended for Leanne. He eases it open to find a Bros cassette. All his suspicions are confirmed.

Johnny comes into the Rovers and Eva asks for news from the court. Johnny reports the 12 month sentence. Eva reckons it is an unfair sentence. Johnny says he will get some brandies in. He tells Aidan to look after the sobbing Eva. Andy pulls his wallet out of his pocket and we see a package drop to the floor. It is a pack of Diamorphine Hydrochloride prescribed for his migraines and not for mixing with alcohol. Johnny spots it and he picks them up.

Kirk is reading Liam a Christmas story and then he makes a hot chocolate for the lad who is cuddling the new puppy wearing reindeer antlers. Liam gets up and shakes the snow globe and thinks of Maria and what a wonderful day they had the day they went to Llandudno (boys and girls we know a song like that don't we).

Somewhere we hear doors slamming, locks being thrown and lights being extinguished. Maria is on the bottom bunk and she stares out of the window as snow is falling. She cries.

Roll credits.

To my mind a bit harsh on Maria all things considered. Apparently we will be seeing her in prison; guess Aidan will be visiting.

Tim and Steve are providing the comedy relief this week. Great piece which will be better still next week (as I have already seen it).

And Aidan is between the two beauties and does not know which way to turn!

Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you next week.

Richard

Sunday 25 December

Written by Jan McVerry Directed by Duncan Foster

We have arrived at Christmas Day on the cobbles and are entertained by an accapella choir doing a version of Last Christmas by Wham featuring George Michael. Little did they know when they filmed this that it would come to pass that George Michael would pass away on Christmas Day so it was somewhat poignant.

Anyway, Norris looks very thoughtful and sad as he walks down to Number 7 and knocks on the door. Mary opens it and tries to shut it again. Norris offers a gift but she won't have it, she's still angry at him for interfering and closes the door. He shouts that Roy is cooking for them... Elsewhere, Andy looks at a packet of pills and nearly runs into Eileen. He's ducked out of Christmas dinner at Steph's parents' and snarls about it not being fair that a good man like Michael is gone, seeing as who's left behind. She has no words for that.

Nick has been out for a run early. Tracy and Peter have been out walking Eccles who is sporting a fashionable elf doggy coat. Nick scowls in Peter's direction as he goes by and Tracy and Peter both agree that runners, Nick in particular, are smug even as Peter calls a reluctant Merry Christmas. Tracy tries to make plans for later tonight but Peter indicates he won't be around, implying it's to do with AA meetings and people who always have a tough day on Christmas. He takes a phone call and his voice softens as he hears who it is. This is observed by Nick who's come to a standstill by the Kabin/Platt Towers behind them.

Inside the Platt home, Gifts are being opened. Sarah has bought Bethany a smart watch and she's thrilled though a little less so when she finds out it was Gary's idea. Lily bounces into the kitchen and shows David her play phone, telling him she is talking to Mummy. *gulp* David plays along with her and has a conversation with "Mummy", telling her how great the kids are doing and even Max goes along by saying Merry Christmas, making Lily smile. David ends the "call" by telling Kylie he loves her and to keep looking out for them all. Because it's David, it's not overly sentimental at all. It's very real, something you would do for your kids, especially the little one that doesn't quite understand. Over in the living room, Sarah wipes away a quiet tear and smiles at the them. David reminds us all that it's his birthday when he tells the kids that was the best birthday present ever!

Outside, Sally is pulling rubbish like kebab trays out of her hedge while Tim wipes down the windows that seem to have been egged. Zeedan and Rana come by. Tim mentions he has a new laptop and Sally has noticed that nobody else's house has been "targeted", sighing over the downside of being a public figure. "The politics of envy" she calls it.

Nick comes home and finds Leanne just finishing a call. She says it was David complaining about Gail who has gone to Italy with Audrey for Christmas to be with Steven. Does Nick believe her? Remember, he's seen Peter take a call just about that time. Nick seems skeptical. Simon comes out of his room and isn't dressed. They're due to leave for Liverpool to spend Christmas with Auntie Toyah and he's still in his jammies. Simon complains he's not had much sleep due to something Eva has bought for Aidan. Leanne goes into the bedroom. Nick picks up her phone, about to check it but she pops back out to get it.

In the pub, Steve has a new camera and is taking video clips of everyone. There's a bit of natter and we find out that Steve hasn't given Michelle her gift yet. Aidan, Eva and Billy encourage him to bring it out. Steve seems hesitant and well he should! He's backed into a corner. Over at a table a glum looking Andy is joined by Billy who tries to comfort Andy who is feeling guilty that he never stopped people from bullying Michael. Billy advises that next time, Andy will stop someone else from being bullied, cut down the perpetrators. Andy nods and Billy leaves. At the bar, Michelle is about to unwrap an oddly shaped gift. Her face drops when she sees it's a globe. Steve looks equally sheepish.

In the Platt house, the children are bouncing. Nick has come to see them before he and Leanne and Simon go to Liverpool. He keeps peeking out the window. Sarah drags Nick to the back garden to help David put together a toy but when he goes out the back, Leanne is there with a very fancy looking baby buggy as a surprise for him. (That's why she was on the phone to David earlier). She shows it off and he's pleased. An upstairs window opens and Max and Simon throw water balloons and aim the super soaker at people, making them squeal and scatter. Cheeky monkeys!

Over to the cafe, now, where Roy has been preparing Christmas lunch. Brian is at the table, napkin at his chest, hat on and ready to eat. Norris brings the soup starter to the table and Roy proposes a toast to things new. Norris decides this just won't do, they can't celebrate without Mary. He takes the soup out from under Brian's nose to put it back in the pot to be kept warm and gathers his coat. He's off to Mary's to bring her back. He may be some time. Brian looks longingly at the soup.

Leanne, Nick and Simon wheel the buggy with their gifts in it back down the street. They all have a laugh over the water shenanigans. Simon runs ahead to get his drone, leaving Nick and Leanne to chat. She's really looking forward to seeing him as a dad. They have a quick kiss just as a car pulls up and stops quickly beside them. The driver gets out, a thin woman wearing pyjamas and an old cardy over it. It's Toyah! She tells them, breathlessly, that Christmas at hers is off. Turns out she's messed everything up, she tells them. After the break, it's clear something has gone awry. Leanne orders Nick to take Simon to Ken's, they'll surely make room for them at the table. She's going to take Toyah to the flat to talk. Simon returns with his drone. He and Nick head across the road while Toyah and Leanne head back to the flat.

In Number 11, Billy is at loose ends, not used to being idle on one of a vicar's busiest days of the year. He muses that he would be getting ready for the children's service now. Eileen doesn't see why he couldn't go anyway. Todd signs and gives his ok, but reminds Billy that Sound of Music is on at 2! Billy looks kind of excited as he gets up to go.

Andy adds the contents of a pill into a bottle of gin and orange juice, shaking it up to mix it in. He puts it in his coat pocket.

Gary has arrived at the Platts'. He makes a remark about everyone already tucking into chocolates and sweets, possibly ruining their lunch. Bethany makes a few rude, stroppy remarks to him and is scolded by Sarah who doesn't understand where all that's coming from. She warns Bethany that it's a tough day for David and the kids and Gary is her guest. If she doesn't smarten up, Mama will take back the watch. Bethany does an admirable imitation of a put upon teenager.

Norris knocks at the back door of the Alahan house. He can see Mary through the net curtains. She's sitting at a table cleaning the nativity. Norris apologizes for what he and Gemma did but it was done with the best intentions. Mary continues to ignore him though she can hear his words pretty clearly through the closed door/window. He continues to apologize and insists he's staying until she forgives him. I think he's going to wait some time.

In the cafe, Roy observes that the roast potatoes are at their optimum crisp. He hopes Norris can persuade Mary. He turns around to see that Brian has scarfed the potato and is chewing avidly.

Ken lets Nick and Simon in the door and is welcoming. They'll all just squash up and make room. The table is already bursting with Barlows and it's a joy to see. Nick is in a mood. Tracy explains who Toyah is to Daniel, Leanne's step sister. Nick's surly remark that Tracy didn't know Toyah makes me think for a minute but it's possible that Tracy was married to Robert and living away from the street by the time the Battersby family arrived so I'll give him that one. Tracy recalls that Ken was a big fan of Toyah. A spirited girl, Ken recalls. Peter, in the kitchen, is pleasant and thinks it's great that they'll all be joining them. Nick does not look pleased.

Back at the flat, Toyah is wearing one of Leanne's pink track suits. Toyah tells her the state of her marriage. They had a row and Toyah just walked out. Things hadn't been great for awhile. Turns out Toyah has been seeing someone else for months and Toby knows.

We're in Phelan's hospital room next and Eileen is sitting there beside him. She pulls out a ring box and tells him she only wants two words from him. There's a wedding ring inside and she tells him that when he was hurt, she realized she still loved him. She proposes to him and he says yes, of course. This is observed by Andy outside the room and he looks like he's about to explode.

Gary finds Bethany on the swing set out in the garden. He tells her that he's crazy about Sarah and he's in it for the long haul. He asks if he's ever lied to her or done anything to hurt her. She shakes her head, No. He wants them to be mates. Bethany spies Sarah peeking through the curtains and knows she sent Gary outside to make peace. She tells him she's a teenager and it's her job to wind people up. She puts on a brave face and pretends she was getting bored winding him up anyway and goes inside.

Toyah explains to Leanne that she met this man in a bar while visiting a friend "down south". She doesn't tell her the man's name, just saying she tagged him as "Fred" in her phone as an "in" joke. She's a bit cagey as to his identity. Before they can get too far into it, Eva returns. They are introduced and Eva leans over to hug Toyah. She's only come back for Aidan's Christmas present, that would be the one that kept Simon awake all night. We soon find out what it is. It's a little gray kitten!

Ken shows Nick a photo of Peter, Leanne and Simon from back in the day when Peter and Leanne were married and Simon was a cute little boy. Ken explains that Peter was mired in self pity back then but seems to be much better now. Tracy squeals for help in the kitchen, a pan has got wedged in the oven. Nick's phone rings. Peter suggests he answer it (or look at it because it's probably a text) if it's Leanne because it might be important so he does, telling them Toyah is just getting in the shower. Tracy has a melt down over the oven and shoves oven mitts at Nick for help. Peter nips out for a cig and when he goes outside, he's lighting up and walking away from the house in the direction of Victoria Street and the flats there. He looks at the entrance door, smiling a bit.

Anna and Faye have arrived at Platt Towers. Gifts are exchanged, David and Sarah having bought a few things to pass on to Izzy and Jake. Sarah is now back outside with Gary decorating Lily's bike together. Gary comes inside to see his mum. Outside, Bethany is joined by Faye. She tells Faye that she had a stupid crush on Gary and they're just mates.

Nick is on the phone to Leanne to tell her that Tracy's about to serve up. He sits at the table to wait. Daniel gets pedantic over Amy's remark that she's starving and Adam wonders how many cigs Peter actually went to smoke. Nick is clearly fretting and when Amy spills something on him when she gets up, his temper explodes. He apologizes. Tracy points him to the sideboard where tea towels reside and tells Amy it's Nick's brain that's to blame for his shouting. Nick pulls a couple of tea towels out to dry himself off and finds that the cassette tape is missing. HE asks where it is, tells them it was there yesterday and it's gone now. He thinks he knows where it's gone, too and storms out the door leaving them all mystified.

Outside, he hurries across the road toward the flats and sees Peter on the phone leaving a message to someone. He runs up to Peter and shoves him around. Peter doesn't fight back and walks away but Nick runs after him and knocks him down.

We leave them there for the end of the first half of tonight's hour long episode.

Round at the Platts' Gary and Sarah are snogging on the sofa, and David's playing with the children so Bethany takes advantage of the distraction to down a handful of diet pills. Her new watch springs into life with a text message so Sarah decides to take a look. She's horrified to read a message from Faye saying she's glad Bethany's got over Gary – suddenly everything falls into place. But before Sarah can say any more Max announces that Nick is out in the street, chasing Peter.

Sarah and David hurry outside just in time to witness Peter defending himself by giving Nick a punch in the jaw. Nick leaps to his feet, throws Peter over Sally's garden wall and yells at him to stay away from Leanne. Peter retaliates by hurling one of Sally's garden gnomes at Nick's head. By now more people have come to witness the fight, including Leanne and Toyah. As Nick lies on the ground he demands that Leanne should check Peter's pocket. She pulls out the present and opens it to reveal the Bros tape. Nick insists she reads the gift tag out loud. Leanne gives Peter a look as she reads the words: To the love of my life!

Round the corner, Norris is still trying to get Mary to come out while Roy goes off to fetch a chair and some food to keep him going.

We return to the argument where Peter tries to cover his tracks by making out the words on the tag are the line from a song and it was an in joke. Nick looks contrite as Peter reminds him not to upset Leanne as she's already lost one baby.

Peter marches off up the street and tells the family he's going to a meeting.

While this is going on Sarah manages to get Gary on his own for a quiet word so she can break the news to him that he is the mystery man that Bethany has fallen for.

Meanwhile Billy is at the church giving the new vicar some helpful tips for the Christmas service. As he wanders towards the altar looking wistful, Billy's distracted by a noise. He goes to investigate and finds the girl who stole David's wallet, hiding round the corner, getting drunk on a bottle of communion wine.

Back on the street Eileen breaks the news to Todd that she's going to become Mrs Pat Phelan. Not surprisingly he thinks she wants her brains dusting.

We return to the church where the girl is talking to Billy. She tells him how she got to this state and mentions an ex husband, Nathan. Billy has an idea – why doesn't she go home with him for Christmas lunch? As they hurry out of the church together they are watched by a man who gets up and follows them …

Roy, Brian and Norris are now camped out by Dev's back door, wrapped in blankets and drinking from a flask. Norris talks admiringly about Mary and how, whatever life throws at her, she always gets back up. He says that he thinks she's one of the bravest people he knows. At that moment Mary comes outside and asks if Norris really meant what he said. He confirms it and Mary breaks into a smile.

Across town Peter walks into a bar. "Now there's a question," says Peter when the barman asks him what he'd like to drink.

Billy arrives back with his lunch guest. Todd doesn't exactly look overjoyed as Billy introduces Shona to Todd on the doorstep. The man who followed them out of the church watches from across the street.

Round the corner we see Bethany sitting on the ground, leaning against a wall. She's spotted by the man from the church who asks what's up – is it boyfriend trouble? "Man trouble" corrects Bethany who isn't in any mood for a chat. He wanders off and we see her pour a large handful of diet pills into her hand.

Sally and Tim are having a drink in the Rovers. Sally is surprised to hear Steve gave Michelle a globe for Christmas as she thought it was for Faye. Still, she did alright she tells Michelle as Tim gave her a lovely flat screen tv. "Fifty five inches of pure viewing pleasure," mutters Steve as Tim studiously avoids catching Steve's eye.

In the bar Peter drains his glass as the barman asks if he wants the same again. Before he can reply a woman place her hand over the top o the glass. The camera pulls back to reveal Toyah standing there. He confirms he's been drinking water and they walk out arm in arm.

Michelle and Steve have gone round to Sally and Tim's where they're having a row about who the telly belongs to. Sally claims property is nine tenths of the law. Michelle argues back that morally it's hers. Sally tells her not to mention morals where Steve MacDonald is concerned. Michelle calls Sally a stuck up mare and says she's had toothbrushes with more culture than her. Sally isn't backing down so Michelle says in that case she's taking something in return and marches out with their laptop under her arm. Sally settles down to watch her new telly and tells Tim the bedroom door is closed to him and he can go and sit in the conservatory.

Andy arrives at the hospital to see Phelan who asks if he's got the money for the stolen laptops. Andy admits he hasn't got the cash but he's brought something else to cheer up Phelan's Christmas. He places a bottle of orange juice on the table, claiming it's been topped up with gin. Phelan sends him off to get some ice to go with it.

Round at Eileen's they're finishing the washing up while Shona tucks into a bowl of Christmas pudding. Todd pointedly asks if she needs to use a phone so that she can find herself a sofa for the night. Shona takes the hint, thanks them all and takes her leave. The moment she's gone Billy grabs Todd in excitement. He asked for a sign and Shona was it – he's been called back to the church! Todd sighs heavily – he clearly doesn't share Billy's sense of euphoria.

Andy arrives back in Phelan's room with a jug of ice to find he's poured out two glasses of the orange juice. Andy plays for time and starts to argue with Phelan who tells him that if he gets him the money for the computer tablets he'll allow him to walk away and it will be the end of the matter. Phelan hands him a glass but before either of them takes a sip Andy deliberately spills the jug of ice and the drinks go all over the bed.

Back on the street Bethany is really sick. She staggers her way across the road and collapses. We see Shona's stalker lean over her and then carry her into the ginnel.

Peter and Toyah are lying in bed together. She's holding the Bros tape. Peter says she's no idea how much trouble he went to in order to get it for her. Toyah says they can't keep sneaking around like this, she'll have to tell Leanne but Peter reminds her that the whole reason they've kept their relationship a secret is for Leanne's sake. He's worried Leanne will flip but as Toyah points out, now Nick has flipped and the stress is bad for Leanne and the baby. Toyah accepts it will be bad at first but eventually Leanne will understand as she used to love Peter the way that she now loves him. They agree to break the news tomorrow.

In the cafe, Norris, Roy, Brian and Mary are finally enjoying their Christmas dinner together. Roy offers the wishbone and Mary pulls it with Norris. Brian warns her not to say her wish out loud. Mary smiles and says it's too late for that now as she's had everything in her life that a girl could wish for – love, laughter and loyalty. As she says this last word she looks straight at Norris. "But I do wish I'd been someone's mum," adds Mary. "I do wish I'd been allowed."

There's a knock at the door and Norris goes to answer it. He tells Mary she may want to sit down. A young man walks into the room. "This is …" begins Norris. "Jude," the man finishes, as Mary stares in wonder. "Merry Christmas, Mum" he says.

Karen

Monday 26 December

Simon is out in the Street, flying his drone above the rooftops, as Ken and Daniel walk along discussing Peter. Ken is worried because he didn't come home last night and he's not answering his phone. Daniel wonders if it might be worth ringing the police, but Ken says they'll give him a few more hours.

Simon has now arrived home, and wants to know why Nick was fighting with his dad. "I get on with both of you, why can't you get on with each other?" he asks. Nick says there's a lot of bad history, but he'll try not to let it come between them again. Leanne is glad, but has a really bad headache that she can't seem to shift.

Meanwhile, Peter and Toyah are waking up in bed in the hotel room, all affectionate and lovey-dovey. As he rings down to order breakfast, she gets a text message from Leanne who is worried about her. When Peter's off the phone, she tells him that she thinks she should tell Leanne about the two of them, on her own. Peter agrees, and says he'll be the one to tell Nick. Toyah looks thoughtful, she's worried that her sister may never speak to her again, and he reminds her that they knew it would never be easy.

Bethany wakes up in hospital, with Sarah beside her. She doesn't know where she is or how she got there. Sarah wants to know why she took all the pills and tells her that Tyrone found her in the ginnel and brought her to the hospital. When the doctor arrives and wants to talk to Bethany, Sarah goes into the corridor and cries.

Billy is trying to phone the bishop to tell him he wants to go back to the Church. Todd is frosty about this, reminding Billy that they won't be able to get married or live together or have a family. Billy tells him that choosing the Church doesn't mean he loves Todd any less, in fact his support means he loves him even more. "I never said I supported you," says Todd.

Andy has just finished packing a hold all with the tablets when Steph comes out of the bedroom and is wondering about his grumpy mood. He hurriedly puts it down in the hall. "Have I done something?" she asks, querying why he didn't call or text yesterday. He says he was miserable and didn't want to spoil her day. Then he says he wants to go out and get some fresh air, and starts putting his jacket on. She says she'll come with him, but he tells her no, he'd rather be on his own. Then he goes out, picking up the hold all as he leaves, unseen by Steph.

Anna is packing for her move to Kevin's house. She says she doesn't think much of her new neighbours, and Kevin hopes that Pat Phelan will be in hospital for a long time.

Mary's son Jude is showing her photos of his adopted mum and dad, he says they were great and he had a really happy childhood, but they died four years ago. She says she never had a photo of him as a baby, but she shows him a pressed forget-me-not that she took from the vase beside the bed on the day he was born, she wanted to have something to remember him by, and she looks at it a lot. He then asks about his dad, but she changes the subject and rushes out to the kitchen, supposedly to get the mince pies out of the oven, but instead makes a quiet phone call to Norris. "I need you, please," she whispers.

Bethany is being discharged from hospital. The doctor tells Sarah she's going to refer her to the Primary Care Mental Health team, they'll be in touch soon. Sarah believes it is all her fault, but the doctor says there is rarely one single cause. All Sarah can do is support her, but also eliminate any extra stress from her day to day life, and talk to her.

Toyah arrives at Leanne's, gearing herself up to tell her the truth, only to find her husband there waiting. He says they can't throw away 5 years of marriage, and says he wants to talk to her.

Leanne goes out for a walk to leave Toyah and her husband to talk, and try and get rid of her headache. When they're alone, he asks where she was last night – he knows she was with Peter. She says she doesn't know why he's come, and he points out she's his wife. "Not any more," she says. He says he still wants her and believes she still wants him, and he knows she still wants a baby.

Sarah is having a quiet talk with Bethany. She asks if Gary led her on in any way, but Bethany tells her he did nothing, it was all in her stupid head, because he'd always been there for her, he helped with her exam results, with Lauren, with the diet pills, he was on her side. She thought he loved her like he loves Sarah, and then she felt really stupid and worthless. She wanted to change, she would have done anything to make herself a different person. Sarah hugs her.

Mary has finally taken the mince pies into the living room, but her son says he just wants to talk about his dad. Mary looks terrified and starts taking deep breaths, and just then there's a knock on the door, it's Norris. Mary opens the door and steps outside, asking Norris to come in. "How can I tell this lovely young man his father was a rapist?" she asks.

Andy takes the money from the tablets to Phelan in hospital. "So we're quits, all done," he says. Phelan however, doesn't agree, he's changed his mind, but Andy turns round and leaves, with Phelan shouting after him that they'll talk again when he gets out.

Toyah is still talking to her husband, he wants to know where Peter lives. He's also sure that if they hadn't embarked on IVF none of their problems would have arisen. He wonders how she feels about Leanne being pregnant, Toyah says she's pleased. She tells him their marriage is over, but he reckons that if she comes back he'll raise the money for yet another try at IVF. Just then Leanne comes back, her head is so bad she just feels she has to lie down. Toyah is really worried by this and phones the hospital.

Back at Mary's, they're having tea and making polite conversation with Norris. Jude asks again about his dad. "Who was he? Where is he? How did it all happen?" Mary sits down and stares at him. "When I look at you....." she begins. He asks if he looks like his dad, and she says he does, that's why it's so difficult. He wants to know why, and, after hesitating, she tells him she was SO in love with his father. Then she makes up a story about how they were young, she was 16, he was 17, and came from a strict family. He took her dancing, but then died falling off a stage during a dance competition. His family moved away soon after. Then she breaks down weeping. Norris makes a tactful departure. Then Jude asks her to come back to South Africa with him, to live with them.

Anne Logan

We begin in the street with Peter racing up to Nick saying he's got something to tell him that will cheer him up. Before he can get it out, they see Toyah and Leanne and Nick rushes off to the hospital with them. Toyah just has time to check with Peter whether he's told Nick about them yet.

Mary's still sitting stunned. Jude points out that if she came to live in South Africa she could spend more time with the new baby, "Grandma."

In Sarah's back yard, she tells Gary they have to break up so she can concentrate on Bethany. She needs to be a good mother and she's not that. She says that when Bethany got the bad exam results, when she was being bullied and when she was taking diet pills, it's wasn't Sarah Bethany went to, but Gary. And because he helped her, she imagined he was in love with her. "How do you think she's going to feel every time she sees us together? Please, just go." Gary does, leaving Sarah alone to weep.

Si offers to follow Daniel with the drone if he goes out on his bike. Peter comes back and tells Ken he slept on a mate's sofa last night - sober. He tells Si that Leanne and Toyah have gone shopping. That's two lies. Si says that if Peter goes for a run he can follow him with the drone. Peter laughs that he hasn't been for a run for 20 years.

Toyah and Nick wait in the hospital and start arguing loudly over who has caused Leanne most stress this Christmas. A nurse comes out and tells them to take the fighting outside - they can hear every word inside the examination room and it's not helping!

Kevin's involved in an angry conversation with someone and promises to send some money tonight. He tells Anna that Sophie's had to have an emergency appendectomy and has huge medical bills. That's all he needs when he's just paid 15 grand for a new tow truck, which will be here next week. Anna offers to look after Jack if he needs to go to Miami but he says Rosie's there. Besides, he'd rather stay with Anna.

Bethany gets home and Sarah tells he she's split up with Gary. Bethany's angry - now she feels guilty. Sarah insists it just wasn't working. She says they're going to sort things out and Bethany can start by going to thank Tyrone for rescuing her from the ginnel.

The hospital's keeping Leanne for a day or three. She's got high blood pressure and a kidney infection. She sends Nick home to fetch pyjamas and toiletries. When he's gone, she asks Toyah where she was last night. "You were obviously with your fancy-man." She doesn't like Toyah lying to her and it made things very awkward when Toby came round looking for her.

Toyah says it's all over. Her marriage and the affair are both finished. New Year's round the corner and it's time for a new start. Though she is technically homeless. Leanne says she'll sort that. "Leave Nick to me."

Bethany takes a big box of chocolates round to Tyrone but he says her rescue wasn't down to him - it was some bloke called Nathan who carried her out of the ginnel. Tyrone took them to the hospital and later dropped Nathan at a tanning salon. Despite his protests, Bethany snatches back the chocolates and goes off.

Peter meets Nick in the street. Nick asks what he was going to say earlier. Peter says it was just that Leanne's chosen Nick and Peter's not interested.

In the tanning salon Bethany talks to Nathan. He asks what it was she'd taken and when she says it was diet pills he sounds incredulous. She doesn't need them! "Yeah, well, I was just a bit messed up," she says. She'd better be getting back - but Nathan offers her a (soft) drink.

In the pub, Billy and Todd discuss Billy's return to the ministry. But he says this time he wants the church AND Todd. He's going to talk to the bishop about it. Todd doesn't want to go back to having Billy at the beck and call of everyone. Billy says he stood by Todd through all the stuff about the development, so it's only fair that Todd stand by him now.

An orange woman leaves the tanning salon as Nathan sits down by Bethany. He asks after her boyfriend and she admits she doesn't have one, though she changes that to she doesn't NEED one. He grabs her phone to put in his own number. "If you ever need someone to talk to, or a spray tan, or a lifesaving lift to hospital. . ."

Gemma's practically melted into a puddle at Jude's feet in the pub. She tries to make intelligent comments about marine biology and comes up with a tale about once stepping on a jellyfish. Tyrone doesn't like jellyfish. "Or jellies - It's the way they wobble. You can't trust them," he says.

Mary rushes to hug and thank Norris as he comes in.

Out in the street, a happy Bethany texts and walks at the same time. On the ramp to the medical centre, Simon controls his drone.

Peter meets Toyah in the ginnel. Toyah is glad they haven't told anyone. Leanne's supposed to avoid stress. They just need to wait a few more months and keep their relationship quiet until the baby arrives. They snog (there's no other word for it) just as the drone is overhead. Simon sees all.

Todd kisses Billy. He's willing to share Billy with 200 parishioners and with Billy's imaginary friend on condition Billy promises not to bring home any more waifs and strays.

Mary tells Liz about her expected grandchild. Toby, thanks Norris and Gemma for finding Mary for him. Mary brings more drinks over to the table and says she has an announcement. She announces she's decided to go to South Africa to live with Jude. There are hugs and congratulations almost all round. Norris looks unhappy.

No Corrie tonight

Friday 30 December

Good evening. Looks like I am last up this year. So has it been a good or bad year on the Street? Some great stunts - Tyrone driving into the Platt extension and finding Callum; David setting fire to Anna; stories - Kylie's murder, Maria/Aidan/Eva, Carla's departure, Daddy Steve twice over, Anna and Jude, Billy/Sean/Todd; Roy and Cathy; Pat and is dirty dealings; Michael's death (or murder). Sally as a councilor and Steve / Tim plus Tim's brewing for comedy, gullible EIleen, the twins torturing Erica, Kev and Anna getting together. Nick and Robert and later Nick and Peter locking antlers. The return of R'Toyota and Peter, Adam and Daniel must strengthen the Street.

My advice for Kate Oates - ease the pace; do not burn the stories so fast, slower build and look to get the ducks in a row. An example of missing a story due to speed: Dev had a skip on the Street, needed for Dave's driving incident. We should have had talk about choosing the bathroom and why the local builder was not doing the work; we had Norris using the skip - but that was merely to point it out. If the stories are slower the details can be explored. Plus more comedy - not just the comic characters - and don't lose sight of characters; Kev and Anna disappeared for months as a couple and did not let us see the growing relationship. Sean has almost vanished at the moment - what is happening inside no 3? And we need a new young barmaid at the Rovers to ease Michelle's workload and working her way around the men on the Street; sensible use of Jason's yard, Barlows doing things other than minding Ken who is never without female company for long, more Audrey and Freddie (also both missing for weeks).

So episode 9067 is the last one of 2016 and although it was broadcast on 30/12 you must suspend belief and pretend that is New Year's Eve - clearly a time machine has been acquired and the crew went forward, recorded all the action and then returned to transmit it a day early. The second half is not later this evening - it is on Sunday when it will be on the right day again. Tonight was penned by Martin Allen and the director was Duncan Foster. Copyright remains the property of ITV to whom many thanks.

We open with the dulcet tones of Toyah (hereinafter she shall be once R'Toyota) who is pleased to see her favourite man - Roy of Roy's Rolls who had already heard that she had returned. She is about to visit Leanne in hospital and she is sad to hear that Roy is leaving town. She wants the full story as he makes her a cappucino. Andy has the night off (on NYE? - remember Steph has been sacked) and Luke overhearing this suggests double date with Tracy in the Bistro. Also in the cafe Anna and Gary are having a drink - Gary is going away for a while - he has to put some space between himself and Sarah and he will return once the dust has settled. She asks Gary to give her best to Eddie. Eileen comes in wanting a Danish to go. Steph catches Eileen and asks for a two week extension on the rent. She has lost her job after all. She agrees in the light of assistance they gave Pat. In response to a query from Roy Eileen reports that Pat will be home later today. We see both Anna and Andy being upset by this news.

Norris straightening magazines when Jude (Mary's wonder child) comes in wanting some loose dolly mixtures. He does not blame Norris for being suspicious. Norris gives Jude a gentle warning about Mary's new life. Jude gives him an absolute assurance. Norris also tells Jude that Mary does have a sensitive heart.

Simon returns to Number One and finds Peter in Ken's corner chair. He has a very black look on his face. It is clear he is upset. Peter assures him that Leanne will be home from Janice's soon. Simon then tells Peter he was flying his new drone and he saw Peter and Auntie Toyah together in the ginnel. SNOGGING! So he reckons Peter was lying when he said he had come back to the Street to be with him was just lies.

We are outside Preston's Petals as Johnnie emerges with Jenny. He is telling her that he is feeling tired after only doing a morning's work. She offers to organise things for the party if he wants a rest. Johnny recounts how he could all day and night when he was younger. Jenny is also trying to work out how to avoid Gemma using her perfume! She regrets losing that flat. Johnny smiles.

Mary has completed her last flower arrangement inside Preston's Petals. Tracy says she can go. She has prepared Mary's last pay packet. Tracy adds that she does not say things like this but Mary is going to be a hard act to follow. And she will not be taking Todd back after he abandoned her. She wishes Mary all the best and Luke wanders into the shop as Mary leaves. Tracy tells Luke that she is going to miss the barking-mad weirdo as she leaves town. Mary is reliable, hard-working and the punters love her. Looks like Mary has really got to Tracy. She calls Mary a freak and says she will see Luke in the Rovers at 6. (Looks to me like Tracy has a serious character crisis coming up). She has a big happy smile on her face.

Anna and Kev are at home discussing Phelan's return. Kev is happy to stay in this evening. Anna and Faye are still unpacking boxes of stuff. Seb arrives at the front door; they all wish each other a happy new year and we see Anna hide something under a tea towel - but I am not sure what it was. Faye and Seb head to the bottom of the stairs and Faye shuts the door. He gives nothing away about why he has not been in touch. He suggests that they spend the evening at his house. This gets her to snap out of her mood (remember Seb was trying to chat up Bethany before the trip to Leeds).

Back at Number One Peter tells Simon a pack of lies - he was just comforting Auntie Toyah and he was trying to make her feel better - it was really just a hug. Si does not buy it. He accuses Peter of being jealous of Nick and Leanne so has gone after Toyah deliberately. Peter tells Si he has got it wrong. Si wants to tell Leanne and will do the second she returns. Simon leaves although Peter desperately does not want it to come out like that.

After the break we are at Dev's house where Mary has packed about 5 cases and is going to the Rovers for one last time. Dev asks if she is sure she is doing the right thing? She confirms she has never been so sure of anything in her life. Dev harks back to losing Sunita and how he would not have managed without her. He really hopes it works out. Mary's face twists as she contemplates losing the twins and her friends. They hug and then Aadi and Asha are arguing about who will give her their present. She opens it and it is a simple bracelet that Asha has made - Mary says she will wear it every day. Aadi says they are her family and ask her not to go. She hugs and kisses them both.

Along at the Rovers Steph is asking Luke if he has made any resolutions whilst a troubled looking Andy stands quietly by her side. Tracy arrives and Luke is denying his resolutions are to drink more or bed more women as Steph alleges. Tracy upbraids Luke for not telling her it was a kids' night out looking at Steph and Andy. She then threatens to drink Steph under the table any day. Steph asks if she should start slowing down at her age, big 4 Oh on the horizon? Luke tells them to play nicely or he is off. They smile at each other.

Pat and Eileen come into the bar. Eva is serving. Pat does not want to ruin Eileen's evening. He has a half of shandy and she has a glass of white wine. Pat says he is on best behaviour - and then throws a dirty look in Andy's direction.

Peter is now in the flat about the flower shop - it was his and then he rented it to Anna and has moved back in. The door buzzer goes and R'Toyota comes up the stairs. She has had her phone off as they were doing tests on Leanne. Peter breaks the news that Simon knows. Peter admits his cock and bull story made things worse and has gone to tell Leanne. R'Toyota's phone has a message - it is from Leanne, she has been discharged and she and Nick are on their way home.

In a dark corner in the Rovers yard a panic stricken Andy is on the phone to Ollie. Andy wants to crash at Ollie's whilst he looks for work in Bristol. Andy will be on his way shortly. (NYE? No public transport, hitch-hiking I suppose).

Jenny has a lot ready, including herself when Johnny appears carrying a box of alcohol. He says it all looks very nice and that she must have done this before. Jenny is having problems with earrings, but seems to be a very good fit in a rather nice red lacy dress. Apparently Gemma has been wearing her best ones and they need sterilising now! Gemma has also blunted Jenny's razor and has used her deodorant stick! Jenny has had enough. Johnny tells her that if she is fed up slumming it with the housemate from hell (who stinks of kebabs every night adds Jenny) then why not move in here? He does mean and Jenny is looking forward to living in Victoria Court. Huge cuddle Johnny gets as reward.

Jude is showing the view over green fields and a river and a mountain from his sitting room at home. We are in the Rovers and Liz asks Mary how she will be spending her time in South Africa - but Mary does not know. Jude re-assures her that she will not need to work. Liz is envious of a life of leisure.

Johnny and Jenny arrive in the Rovers with huge smiles on their faces - they want three bottles of best Champagne - which only costs £35 a bottle! Johnny sees Jude's photos and it reminds him of a place he used to have in Marbella. You cannot beat waking up in the sun every morning. Johnny's phone goes - and it is not to wish him a Happy New Year.

Tracy is starving and Luke suggests a hotpot. She will pretend he did not say that. Steph can hardly recommend the Bistro as she has been sacked and Andy is off. Tracy does not believe Robert will be a problem if she is there. Steph agrees - they just need Andy to come back from ringing his Mum (his Mum is called Ollie? - seems very odd to me). Tracy asks if Luke will ring his mummy too? He asks if she has a problem - but she merely likes it when he is being butch. (Luke does seem to like older women - Audrey and now Tracy)!

Liz returns with the champagne. Johnny explains the phone call was from Chisholms and apparently the delivery did not reach them. He is going to have to deliver a new batch from stock tonight for the sales. He cannot afford to upset such a large client. Can she practice hosting his soirees whilst he sorts it out? She smiles.

Andy completes his phone call - he will pack and a bag and come on down. Steph is apparently cool with it, he is not sure it is going anywhere anyway. Pat emerges out of the gloom, Andy says he told Pat to leave him alone. Pat reminds Andy that the latter has to do what he says he wants done, unless he wants to be convicted for attempted murder. Or PAt gets menacing - face down in a ditch might be worse still. Pat sees things though properly. Andy is cowed.

In the Rovers bar there is a little group - Erica, Cathy, Brian - looking forward to spring. Andy returns through the crowded pub and has forgotten he was calling his mother! They head of to the Bistro. Pat catches Andy's eye as he leaves.

Eva is trying to help Jenny at Johnny's flat. Jenny does not appreciate the assistance. Eva tells her off for acting like she owns the place. Jenny reveals she will soon be living there. Eva can hardly believe her ears and the buzzer goes so Jenny cannot pursue the conversation as she goes to meet the guests.

Somewhere on the mean streets of Weatherfield Johnny's van has a puncture. Anna, Jack and Kev are on the sofa watching a film with Kev wiping away a tear and being called a softie by Anna. There is a taxi booked to bring Faye back by one. Kev's phone goes - Johnny needs rescuing. Anna says he is to go - he can charge well for it and Sophie needs the money! She will put Jack to bed. Kev tells Johnny he is (expensive) luck.

In the Rovers it is ten minutes to midnight. Jude gets Mary's and Norris's drinks. Norris is feeling it - he lost Emily to Peru a year ago and now Mary. Why is everyone trying to get away from him? Mary reminds Norris he tried to talk Emily out of going - will he be trying to stop her? Norris says that it is none of his business. She has found something to set her heart on. Mary says that normally he pokes his nose in where it is not wanted. He asks if she wants to be talked out of going? She tells him not be ridiculous - it is her family after all the years. Norris is not happy as Mary gets a red wine from Jude.

Jack is getting a drink in the dark kitchen when he knocks over a glass disturbing Anna who has gone to bed. The light switch fails to work and she starts downstairs - but falls down about half of the staircase and ends up lying behind the front door not moving. Jack tries to wake her. He can just reach the door lock and he lets himself out onto the Street to get help.

At the Bistro Robert observes Steph, Andy, Luke (and Tracy is sat on Luke's knee) in a corner and he tells Steph it is not a problem. He wishes them a Happy New Year. Tracy tells Steph "That is more like it girlfriend". "Thanks Mum" Steph replies. There is some chat, but Andy is not feeling it. Andy says he is feeling queasy and that he may have drunk too much. Steph suggests some fresh air and she says she will come as well. He tells her to stay. He tells her that he thinks the world of her. He gives her a big kiss and then goes outside. We go into another music track - Christina Perri - Jar of Hearts:

And who do you think you are,
Running around leaving scars, (as we see Andy pushing out of the Bistro)
Collecting your jar of hearts,
And tearing love apart? (Punters start countdown at ten, nine ...)
You're gonna catch a cold, (seven, six, five - we switch back to the Rovers and Mary's huge grin)
From the ice inside your soul. (four, three ... now Johnny's party - Jenny particularly looking forward)
So don't come back for me, (one Happy New Year - led by Mary
Who do you think you are? (Cheering).

Overhead view of Pat and Eileen kissing in the Rovers. In the flat Andy is stuffing clothes into a bag. Steph is missing him in the Bistro. Anna is lying on the floor un-moving. Outside on the Street young Jack is staring at the fireworks going off.

Roll credits.

Spoilers ahead:
Will Andy leave the Street? Or will Steph go looking for him?
Will Mary leave the Street for South Africa? Or will it be a flying visit?
How will Johnny announce that Jenny is moving into the flat? And if you can watch Sunday's episode I recommend watching Eva's face - that girl can really chew a wasp well.
Will Pat and Eileen be happy ever after?
Can Shona return Kylie's photo to David?
All these questions and many more have to be answered in future episodes.
I won't be here next week as I am off for a little winter sun. And to all thieves - the house is still occupied.
Finally in the words of Mrs Dale I am still very worried about Emily Bishop or perhaps that should be Eileen Derbyshire.

See you in a couple of weeks.
Richard
