More of a summary today as I'm busier than a one armed paper hanger.

Written by Chris Fewtrell Directed by Nickie Lister

Poor Tracy. You can't blame her for being down in the dumps. Anyone would be after that fiasco of a wedding. And if my father tried to point out that the glass is in fact half full, I'd probably bite his head off, too! What he says is true, about time healing, and at least she's got Amy, but right now, that's not what she wants to hear. In the aftermath of her wedding going up in smoke and the revelation that the man she loves is a killer, leaving the rest of her life being very different from the one she expected it to be wouldn't make me want to count my blessings, either!

It's nice to see that Tracy has one friend who's got her back and Beth is staunchly on Team Tracy, giving everyone a rollocking when they aren't too sympathetic for Tracy. She hasn't had nearly the years of feeling the sharp edge of Tracy's tongue or been on the receiving end of her schemes so it's understandable.

Ken, meanwhile, can hardly contain his gratitude for what Carla did but while she doesn't want Peter to spend life for something he didn't do, it doesn't mean she's feeling all warm and fuzzy for him either. And there's a lot of red tape so Peter can't just walk out of the doors. It must be frustrating when you know you'll be released and still have to sit there waiting for bureaucracy to catch up. Audrey, Ken's new BFF, is comforting to him now that Deirdre's firmly ensconced at Bev's helping her through the loss of her brother.

Happy Birthday, Liz! Tony surprises her with a romantic meal, bless him. But she's also worried, what if Tracy shops Tony to the cops? I don't think she'd do it unless she was really desperate and Tracy Barlow can lie for England even under the harsh glare of police interrogation if she really has to. Later, Tracy assures Tony she hasn't mentioned his name to the police.

Audrey is still eyelash batting over Luke. When Maria starts talking about buying a car, Audrey offers Luke's services as an advisor but Maria figures she can handle it herself. In the end, though, Maria decides to ask Luke anyway because the car she wants to see is out in Cheshire.

Michael gets a bit of news from his cousin about where his son, Gavin might be and heads out to find him at the bar where he apparently works. Todd manages to pay Eileen back a bit of the cash he owes her. Steve prefers to work at the cab office rather than help Michelle pursue a new wedding client.

Tracy sits, sulking and then gets a shock when her phone rings and it's Rob! She insists that he tell her the truth, did he kill Tina? He admits it but it's clear he's a wreck. He asks her to bring him some money to enable his escape but she's reluctant because the police are watching her. He assures her that he still loves her and he's as much of an emotional wreck as she is. That isn't really helping, Rob. He does find time to get a newspaper which was probably a mistake because his face is all over it with headlines screaming about a man hunt except it was the local Weatherfield Gazette and the headlines were in the middle of the paper, not on the front page. Odd, that. And then there's a knock on the door.... Uh oh....

Someone is still thumping on Rob's door. Should he open it? Should he not? Finally he makes a decision. Who should come bursting in but Tracy, screaming like a fishwife. She's been humiliated and is a laughing stock, she sobs as she starts thumping him. No change there then. Finally she falls sobbing into Rob's arms.

After what we gather has been a hair-raising ride for Luke, he and Maria arrive at a large house in the middle of nowhere where they've come to see the car for sale. They're greeted by a comedy character called John who is clutching what looks like a large piece of sewer piping. (It's not clear what relevance this has to the plot but I thought I'd better mention it in case it turns out to be a vital piece of information later on). Maria introduces Luke and points out he's not her boyfriend. John unlocks the car then tosses sewer pipe over his shoulder. Luke points out Maria is not his girlfriend. Maria has a look inside and asks if there are any cup-holders - she's always wanted a car with cup-holders. Luke reminds John she's not his girlfriend (I sense a theme going on here). John suggests they take the car for a spin and climbs into the back seat.

Liz and Tony have moved onto the desserts. He's made ice-cream sundaes. They're discussing his flat which he doesn't want to give up. Liz thinks it's because he's not committed to her. Tony explains he needs somewhere to store his "stuff". The sort of stuff, no doubt, he wouldn't want the police finding out about. Liz says that something tells her she can't trust him. Tony replies that something tells him that's the way she likes it. They both take a spoonful of whipped cream with a cherry and look at each other seductively.

Maria's driving the car with Luke next to her. She reaches a junction and asks John which way she should go. At first there's no reply and then John starts talking utter gibberish. Maria thinks he looks a bit peaky so Luke instructs her to pull over.

Tracy has calmed down and Rob is trying to explain to her about what happened the night of the murder. He says that until Tina fell off the balcony he had no intention of hurting her. But then she said she was going to tell the police he pushed her. Tracy still can't quite believe what she's hearing. She wants to know what was more important to Rob - her and Amy or his sister? Tracy starts to get angry when she comes to the conclusion that Rob murdered Tina to keep Carla happy. On top of that, he sat back and let Peter take the blame.

Meanwhile, back home Beth is talking to Ken. They believe Tracy is upstairs, taking a very long bath. Beth goes up to check on her and discovers she's nowhere to be found. Ken looks concerned.

We return to Tracy and Rob. She wants to know why he didn't just tell her the truth. She admits that, had he done so, she might just have given him a chance. Rob asks why. "Why do you think?" asks Tracy.

There's a rather ridiculous scene back at the car with Luke and Maria. They're on the phone calling for an ambulance while simultaneously trying to find the name and number for John's wife on his phone. They track her down and establish what the problem is he's diabetic and needs some glucose. Maria relays this information to the emergency services. Whilst this is taking place, Luke manages to shoehorn in the fact that Maria is not his girlfriend. (N.B. something tells me that within about three episodes they will have moved in with each other)

Tracy and Rob are now lying on the bed together with their arms around each other when they hear someone coming up the stairs. She hides in the bathroom. It's the landlord come to do a repair on the bathroom cabinet. Rob looks very shifty and the landlord looks suspicious but he's persuaded to come back later. Before he goes he warns Rob his wife spotted a shifty-looking woman hanging around downstairs. Rob goes to tell Tracy she's safe to come out. She tells him that this is her honeymoon - sitting on a toilet in the bathroom of a B and B in Bolton. Then Tracy tells Rob she's brought him his money. She hands him an envelope containing £200 and says that she opened some of their wedding cards. She adds that people said some really nice things about them like how they would grow old together and wishing them every success for their business. Rob tells her people will be wondering where she is. He says there's no point in prolonging things and they should say their goodbyes. Tracy shakes her head. She tells him she doesn't want to go to prison, she doesn't want any of this. "I want to come with you," she tells Rob as she kisses him.

Gail's imagination's running riot. Michael's been gone ages and she thinks of all the things that could have happened to him. David points out that he's only gone to a few pubs to ask if anyone's seen his son. But Gail says he's gone to Piccadilly and she reckons there are some very rum characters hanging round that area of Manchester.

Meanwhile, Maria and Luke watch as John (the comedy character with the car to sell) is driven off in an ambulance. Only problem is it looks like John has the car keys on him. There's only one thing for it, they'll have to walk back to fetch their own car but Maria's wearing heels and Luke is in a hurry to get home for his hot date.

Ken goes into the pub to ask Liz if she's seen Tracy and explains how she suddenly disappeared. After Ken leaves Liz tells Tony she hopes Tracy's not done anything stupid because if she gets caught she's going to drop him right in it. Judging by his face, Tony's already worked that one out for himself.

Back at the B and B Rob and Tracy are making plans. She's going home to fetch some stuff then meet him at an agreed place. Rob asks if she's sure. Tracy says she is. Rob points out there's no going back. He asks her to say goodbye to Amy for him, they kiss and then Tracy leaves.

Luke is staggering along a country lane with Maria on his back while she carries her high heels and complains that he's taken a wrong turning. I'd be tempted to dump her in the nearest ditch but all he does is remind her he'll be late for his date which prompts a sarcastic comment from Maria.

Back on the street the wanderer returns. From the way he's staggering across the cobbles it looks as though Michael's sampled the wares of every pub in Manchester. He stops for a drunken chat with Norris who fails to notice a van draw up outside his house. He's furious when Michael tells him the van driver put a card through his letter box. Will Norris ever receive his parcel?

Gail's put out of her misery when Michael comes stumbling through the door but she soon realises she'll have to make some strong black coffee. David thinks it's hilarious. Gail wants to know if Michael found anything out. He tells her that he met someone who knows someone who used to work with his son but the woman is away until next week. David breaks into a rendition of "What Shall We Do With the Drunken Burglar?" Michael joins in briefly before passing out.

Michelle follows Carla out of the pub. She tells her that she thinks Carla did the right thing. "Did I?" asks Carla, sounding as if she doesn't believe it. She points out it didn't bring Tina back to life and all it did was ruin Rob's life . . . and hers . . . and Tracy's . . . and Amy's. Michelle says she had no choice, what Rob did was wrong and what Carla did was right. Carla replies that it doesn't feel like it, though.

Luke and Maria finally arrive back. They are extremely curt with each other. He thanks her for the experience, she thanks him for going, adding "even though Kevin made you do it". Maria wishes him good luck on his date. Luke replies that it can't be worse than this. Maria puts him straight and tells Luke that this wasn't a date, it was just a nightmare.

Ken comes out of the front door just as Tracy arrives back. She claims she's just been out to buy Amy some new tights for school. Before they can go inside Carla and Michelle come along. "How is he, Tracy?" asks Carla getting straight to the point. Tracy looks shifty but pretends not to know what she's talking about. She insists she's been to the shops and brushes past Ken into the house. Ken frowns and Carla gives him a knowing look.

Wednesday 5 November

Ken finds Tracy in the living room and berates her for going walkabout. She says she had to get away on her own, she's sick of everyone laughing at her. Ken assures her that no one is laughing.

Craig and Faye are in the cafe and Anna tells them to get off to school. Faye reminds her that parents evening is coming up. Yasmeen comes in handing out flyers for a first aid course that's to be held at the community centre.

Over at the garage, Kevin and Tyrone are amused to hear Luke on the phone to someone he's had a date with but doesn't want to see again. Just then Maria comes along but the atmosphere between them is strained.

Amy is wittering on to her mother about school and friendships. Tracy looks at her thoughtfully and then asks if she'd like to have the day off school. She thinks it would be good for them to have some girly time together. Amy thinks that's a wicked idea! Ken comes downstairs and tells Amy she's going to be late if she doesn't hurry. Amy informs him of Tracy's plan and he's somewhat surprised but doesn't say much and then goes off to see Peter. Amy goes upstairs to fetch her duvet and Tracy pulls a hold all out from under the table and goes out of the back door with it.

Over at the factory, Carla is pacing and pensive while the staff discuss the situation. Sean says he always had a feeling that Peter didn't do it. "You did not!" says Sally, adding that she will do all she can to keep the place afloat until Carla can cope again.

In the cafe, Todd is also pensive. Roy advises him to make moves to build bridges with those he's alienated, it's good for the soul.

Chesney is also in the cafe when Tyrone and Fiz come in with Cilla, but he makes a hasty exit. Todd tries to talk to Fiz and Ty but gets nowhere.

In the salon, Maria is attending to Yasmeen's hair and having a discussion with Audrey about Luke. Maria think's he's arrogant, but Yasmeen points out that then two people seem to take against each other so vehemently it's often a sign of attraction.

Amy and Tracy have been watching Titanic. As the final music plays, Tracy is quite tearful. Amy starts talking about Rob and asks if he's ever coming back, Tracy says he isn't. Just then Ken comes back and takes Tracy aside into the kitchen where he tells her that the police have found the murder weapon. Tracy asks him to watch Amy while she goes to the shop to check on Todd, then she picks up her coat and car keys and goes off out the back door. Outside, she goes to the outhouse, pulls out a phone and makes a call. "I'm ready," she says. "I'm sure. Let's do it." Then she heads off out of the back gate.

After the break, we see Tracy sitting in Ken's car, having difficulty getting it started. Carla sees her and stops to watch. The front door opens and Ken comes out, amazed to see Tracy in the car. He shouts at her as she finally manages to drive away, off up the Street and round the corner. He and Carla stare at each other across the cobbles.

Todd comes out of Tracy and Rob's shop and sees the teenage louts throwing eggs at Roy's shop window. He shouts at them and they run off as Roy comes out of the door and shouts "Why?" at them. Todd gives up chasing them, they're younger and fitter, but stays and gives Roy a hand to clear up the mess.

Maria goes into the pub with Audrey but stops short when she sees Luke standing there. However, he comes over and apologises for his behaviour earlier and hopes they can start again.

Back at the Barlow's, Carla and Ken are discussing Tracy's behaviour. Ken is convinced that she has abandoned her daughter and gone to be with Rob. Ken thinks they should call the police but Carla thinks they should wait.

We then see Tracy walking around an empty, derelict building. She calls Rob's name and he finally appears, they run to each other and hug.

Luke is sitting in the pub with Audrey and Maria, when Audrey says she has to go.

Roy comes in and declines an offer to join Tyrone, Fiz and Cilla. Just then Todd comes in and Roy asks what he'd like to drink. Cilla tells him to watch out, Todd is trouble. Roy tells them that everyone deserves a second chance and tells them how Todd chased off the gang of boys and then helped to clear up. Roy pays for the drink and then leaves. Tyrone gets up and thanks Todd for what he did.

Ken and Carla are still talking about Tracy when Carla's mobile rings. It's the police, but she doesn't answer it.

Rob and Tracy are distressed and tearful. He tells her he loves her very much and she says she loves him too. He urges her to hurry and leave with him, but she pulls back, weeping. "Please don't hate me," she says. He's puzzled at first, he thinks she's changed her mind. She sobs, and talks about Amy. She tells him she doesn't want to lose him and keeps saying she's sorry. Then there are noises, and he presses her to give him the car keys. Police sirens are heard in the distance and then the penny drops. "You've led them straight to me!" says Rob. She tries to tell him she loves him more than she's ever loved anyone, but Rob shouts that you'd don't betray someone you love. Then the police are there, telling Rob to be sensible and walk towards them and then drop to the ground with his arms out. He does as he's told and they arrest and handcuff him. He turns and stares at Tracy. "I didn't have a choice," she says. He tells her that she did, and so did Carla. There is always a choice. "Why did you do it?" he says, as they take him away.

Friday 7 November

Good morning / afternoon / evening depending on when you are reading this and what time zone you are in !

Starting with Todd who wants to make amends. He invites Jason and Sean out for a meal at the Bistro. They both make excuses why they cannot come.

Over at the Barlows, Tracy is sitting on the stairs feeling very upset. Ken who has just come in with Eccles, assures her that she did the right thing. She says that she keeps 'seeing' Rob looking at her.

Roy shows Tim the state of his windows at the cafe. He tells him that some yobs threw eggs and stuff at it.

In the cafe Jason is talking to Eva. She says Todd is trying to apologise. Roy tells Jason how Todd came to his help recently, for which he was grateful.

Todd goes to see Eileen about going out for a meal, but she also tells him that she is not interested. He tells her that he would like to get everybody together. It does not impress Eileen. However, after awhile of him trying to apologise for all that has gone on, she eventually relents.

Cilla offers to cook an 'exotic recipe' meal for Ty and Fizz.

Tracy goes to the shop. Todd tells her that he has sold a few things. Tracy is not interested and sacks him. She then notices Rob's coat hung up. She sniffs it and starts to cry.

Jason sees Eileen making up with Todd. He realises that she is going with Todd to the Bistro and is annoyed.

Sinead and Chesney are moaning about Cilla. Fizz is doing too much for her. Then Cilla comes in and invites them over for dinner.

Katy tells Steph that she is going to the Community Centre for the First Aid Course.

Todd goes to the Bistro to arrange tables, as he is in the belief that everyone will come.

Tracy is at the back of her shop, still crying. When a customer comes in, she just tells them to go away. (Must buy her a copy of 'How to Succeed in Business' !!)

Yasmeen is getting ready for the First Aid course at the Community Centre. Just as she was explaining that her guest speaker, a paramedic is going to be late he walks in, in a rush. He is 'hunky' (my wife said that, I wouldn't know !).

Ken, Carla and Michelle are all chatting. Ken hopes that Peter will be out of prison soon.

Todd is waiting at the Bistro, but nobody arrives. He then gets a phone call from Jason who confirms that nobody will be coming.

Katy asks Mark, the paramedic a question. He suggests that they discuss it over a drink.

In the Rovers Michelle complains to Carla that she has done a lot of work for Tracy and Rob's wedding. She has not received any money.

Ken says he has heard from Peter's solicitor. She is confident that Peter will be released from prison on Monday. Tracy comes in to the pub and wonders why everybody is celebrating. She is not happy.

Todd is walking home and the yobs stop him for his phone. and wallet. He refuses and they start punching and kicking him.

So will Todd survive this beating? Will Katy invite Mark for a 'nightcap'?

Richard will be following me and may answer those questions!

Martin Rosen

Hello again. A nice week here in Update Towers. A trip out on Monday to the Crab at Chieveley which is a noted fish restaurant near Newbury. And four ladies joined me for lunch - the luxuries of being retired. However I am not invited to the next meeting - apparently I was only allowed as I was chauffeur! Passing over the hygienist a trip to London on Thursday went well and on the day after this transmission the football again walked over the opposition.

Moving to more serious matters let us head to Weatherfield where events tonight were written by Mark Burt and directed by Nickie Lister. Copyright of course remains the property of ITV Studios to whom many thanks for providing us with the feast which is Coronation Street.

We open this evening under the arches at the back of a nightclub (you can hear the bangin' music) where a savagely beaten Todd is sobbing. A girl with long blonde hair says that he will be OK and she will get some help.

At the Grimshaw residence, Eileen is saying that Todd is not picking up - but Jason is not surprised. Eileen thinks that he must hate them. Eileen tells Jason off for his attitude but Jason is not losing any sleep over it. Jason reckons that when Todd realises they cannot be bought off he will get his act together. Eileen thinks Eva is at the bistro - and Jason then says she is working. Eileen asks for her coat and heads out to the bistro.

In the Rovers there is a friendly line up at the bar - Carla (who does not want an argument), Ken and on his left Tracy. Carla offers to buy Tracy a drink - for which the response is "Get Lost". Ken says to Tracy that, like her, they are simply trying to make sense of all of this. Tracy protests that no-one is like her. Carla tries to reason with her - is there ever any reasoning with Tracy? Tracy rages at them both and then leaves. Michelle observes that Tracy was wearing Rob's jacket. Carla agrees. Eva thought it was a good look for her actually [great line]. Michelle and Carla both give her the evils. Eva backs off.

Tim is far from happy with having been volunteered by Faye and is clearly in a very difficult position. Faye apologises for breathing and goes upstairs, whilst Anna who has been observing realises that there is more to this than meets the eye. Anna asks for a minute alone with Tim and Owen goes to check on Faye. Anna wants to know what is wrong with Tim - she is making it her problem. Tim says he does not want to let Faye down - but Anna says doing the auction is just a bit of fun. "Not when you can't read" Tim replies.

Cilla Battersby-Brown is cooking and Fiz says it smells fantastic. Apparently Cilla's chicken cassoulet is to die for. Kirk and Beth arrive with wine - Croatian Rose. Dev reckons it is the way forward - the new new apparently. [Me - I much prefer something from South Africa for reds and New Zealand for whites and frankly I rarely drink a rose]. Ty has the promised shopping although Ches cannot believe he had to do it. Kirk announces he could eat a horse but Beth tells him to be careful what he wishes for. Beth says she is only joking, but the viewer can see that the two are "enjoying" taking lumps out of each other! Cilla responds that when Beth asks for seconds she will be expecting an apology. Beth says fair enough, bring it on.

Anna does not know how Tim manages and he explains he can get by with the odd word. Anna says he cannot ignore this problem. She just wants to help - and Tim suggests getting him out of that flamin' auction would help. Anna says running away is not the solution and sooner or later Faye will find out. Anna points out that he tells Faye to face her problems head on - and he ought to do the same.

Ken leaves the Rovers and meets Leanne outside. He is able to tell her that Peter is being released on Monday. Leanne snaps and asks if Peter is off the booze. Ken says that he is sober.

Tim walks onto the Street with Anna and it is clear that he has agreed to let her help him learn to read. She promises to be gentle and gives him a hug - and the camera pans up to where Sal is watching the cuddle from her bedroom window.

In the bistro Mark the hunky first aid man is still (!) talking to Katie who it appears has not yet managed to get a contact number. Alya and Stephanie are watching - but Katie has not even managed a hair flick yet. Katie is able to tell the other two that he brought back someone who had been clinically dead for five minutes. Katie could listen to him talk all night, he is so passionate about his job. Steph just wants to know if he has a girlfriend, but Katie does not know and so Steph reckons she must be clinically dead! Steph tells her to make it a "date" as the guy is "smokin'". Katie and Mark sit down and Katie gives him the full helicopter hair flick.

Jason is slumped on the sofa when there is a knock at the door - a policeman, PC John Hall, looking for Eileen. The officer advises Jason that Todd has been assaulted and hospitalised.

After the interval a medic ushers Eileen, Jason and Eva into Todd's bedside. Amazingly Todd is in a room by himself. Now I have not been in hospital recently but in recent years have spent some time with parent and parent-in-laws and rarely once they are moved from A&E are they in a one person room. (Slight exception with my mother whom they thought had MRSA so she needed to be segregated, although later they decided she didn't have it). His face is pretty badly battered with a bandage covering the left cheek, swollen eyes. Todd's first comment is "Well you finally made it then". Eileen holds his hand and says sorry.

Anna and Owen are arguing over who has the largest fish. Anna swears Owen to silence and then tells him that Tim cannot read and is illiterate and she is going to help to read. Owen is supportive - Tim gets an education and he gets a free pass because she will be nagging Tim and making his life difficult. Anna is a little surprised.

Tracy is watching video from the wedding venue before the news and Amy appears. Amy spots her and tells her mum that providing she tells no-one she admits that she misses Rob as well. Tracy gives her daughter a huge hug.

Cilla is still cooking and the wine is going down. Fiz in an odd way pronounces it "interesting" [I think she means best avoided like the plague]. Cilla has an accident and a pan falls on the floor, with mash spilling out. Beth suppresses a laugh and Fiz helps clear up. Cilla is ordered to sit down and takes a mouthful of wine which she pronounces as "fab".

Leanne comes into the Rovers and joins Carla and Michelle. Carla buys a large glass of wine. Simon is excited and worried about his dad coming home. Leanne asks how Carla is doing. She responds that seeing Peter again is going to be difficult - perhaps Leanne is glad he chose Carla instead of her. Leanne looks shame faced, but she agrees the thought had occurred. Carla says that it will be fine. But she has to hope it will be fine.

All pronounce Cilla's cooking as great. Craig points out that Beth had two and a half portions and is forced to apologise to Cilla for the wisecrack earlier. Cilla reckons that must leave a sour taste and Beth agrees - rather the same taste as the wine - which no-one likes. After some discussion Sinead invites Cilla to stay with her Ches for a few days and in a sign that he is weakening Ches agrees. Beth says she has to go as a text message announces that Tracy needs a friend.

Sal is asking Tim about parents' evening. Tim is not being communicative. Sal tries to draw him out - apparently Rosie and Sophie used to get glowing reports with extensive superlative adjectives describing their progress. Sal thinks that Faye's report must have been bad because Tim has a "face" and a "tone" and is more interested in the droning on the television. Tim has not got the faintest idea - until Sal reveals she saw the "friendly" hug earlier. Tim says that Anna can be a bit pushy and he was trying to get her to cut Faye a bit of slack. Sal suggests she should have a word with Anna - but Tim says Anna is proud and it would not work.

At the hospital Jason is saying that Todd must try and keep the faces of the yobs in his mind. The family depart and Eileen says she will be back in the morning. Even Jason looks troubled.

At the bistro Steph is complaining to Alya that she is in the prime of her life - but she cannot find a decent guy. Alya tells her to stop being so desperate. Mark is going as he has an early start and Katie confirms she has his details. Once he has gone the three girls have an animated conversation about the kiss of life. Katie is more interested in his amazing job than the hunky man himself.

Todd returns home to find three worried people. His blind date went badly. The family bring him up to date on Todd. Eileen is blaming herself for not going to the bistro because she turned her back on her baby.

Beth and Tracy are unwrapping the wedding presents. There are some very strange presents. Beth goes to get a glass of wine - not Croatian. Tracy is looking brighter Ken observes. She responds that she has had time to think about things. Peter might have been having an affair - but who drove him to it? Carla infects people's lives, she takes people over, whatever Rob did, however wrong, he did it for her, everything he did was for her, you know there is only one person to blame for all of this mess - CARLA. And having spat that out she goes onto the next present.

Roll credits.

Well what can we note?

A woman scorned will take it out on her rival - watch out Carla!

Cilla and Beth - how long will it be before they are best friends?

And how will the Grimshaw family handle this latest little upset to their ways?

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 10 November

Written by Ellen Taylor Directed by Alan Grint

Carla sees Ken about to drive to the prison to collect Peter. She makes it clear that even if she has to put up with seeing him in the Street, she has no intention of speaking to him. He's to make that clear to Peter. Ken says he understands.

Todd is drowsy in his hospital bed, restless and reaching for the call button.

Sophie tells Sally about a film that may or may not have subtitles that Maddy doesn't want to go see but Sally seems to be on Team Maddy on this one and besides, she and Tim have a quiet night in planned for a "date night". Tim looks stunned. He forgot. He tells her he made plans to see a mate who's newly divorced and begs off. After he leaves, Sally tells Sophie that she's pretty sure Tim's hiding something. He's been cagey with her all week.

Steve is up early and polishing the bar. Michelle comes in to find him. Turns out he's been away for hours but she wonders if his sleeplessness is down to Peter coming out. Steve professes to have forgotten that. Michelle wonders if she should take Carla out for the day but realizes that Steve isn't really listening to her. She assures him he can talk to her and feels like he's pushing her away. He is tetchy and says he's just tired. That's all.

Down in Number 5, Craig is tired and Beth complains that it's because he's sleeping on the sofa because Cilla has been given his bed. Cilla sighs and says she and her inflamed joints can sleep on the sofa. Kirk suggests someone might have a camp bed they can borrow but that's not good enough for Beth, as if a dodgey mattress that's actually long enough for Craig rather than a too-short sofa will be worse! Craig whispers to Cilla that he's ok and can play on his XBox without anyone bothering him. They laugh together which makes Chesney look irritated at how well they seem to get on.

Jason has gathered some of Todd's things from his rented room, telling Eileen the room is a shabby, damp, small box room. Eileen warns Jason that Todd will be coming back home when he's released from hospital. Liz arrives with a wrapped gift for Todd. Eileen has left the room where she'd been ironing Todd's pyjamas to get a razor out of Sean's room and Liz runs because the iron is burning the fabric. Eileen is all out of sorts and can't concentrate on anything. Tony offers to take her to the hospital but she lashes out at him for being kind when she knows he hates Todd. Tony points out the difference, he hated what Todd did as does Eileen.

Peter is packing up his stuff along with his photos of Simon and Carla. He puts her photo in his tshirt pocket next to his heart and spots a roll of toilet paper on the bunk with a Good Luck message from Clelland on it, which makes him smile. The guard comes in to fetch him. Peter takes a last look around and leaves.

In the factory, the girls ask Sean how Todd is and should they send flowers? They know he's been a bad'un but still... Beth makes a somewhat hypocritical remark about how the world seems to revolve around Cilla much to Sinead's amusement. Carla strides in to check on an order and is in a stroppy mood. Things on her mind, clearly. Fiz reminds them all that Peter's back today and they realize the reason for Carla's mood.

In the cafe, Anna shows Tim a child's book that she's picked up to give Tim his start on the road to literacy. He tries to beg off because Sally's going to find out but Anna insists. He wants to learn to read right? Right. For Faye, right? Right. So he is to be at hers at 5 o'clock. Right.

Peter and Ken are home and it's good to be back. Peter greets Julie who snubs him. He approaches Steve and Michelle. Steve is speechless at first but comes over apologetically. Peter says everything is ok and he's completely forgiven. They shake hands. Tracy comes out for a hug, too. He tells her he wishes it had been any other way than for it to have hurt her (Rob). She brushes it off, glad he's back at least. Peter asks his father if Carla knows he's out. Ken affirms it but doesn't go into detail.

After the break we're back in the cafe with Yasmeen, Kal and Alya bickering over books. Kal doesn't read, it seems. Zeedan and Gary come in. Kal tries to explain the plot of Wuthering Heights in 10 words or less but gets it wrong. He does, however, identify Jane Eyre's plot so he must have remembered something from school. Yasmeen describe's WH's plot in dramatic form as being about forbidden love and a mad wife burned in the attic. Katy arrives at the tail end of the conversation wondering if someone really was burned in an attic. She spews out her first aid knowledge about burns and admits she does want to be a paramedic partly because of the sexy one she's met whom she's meeting later as well. Zeedan is teased for having a few girls sniffing around him but Alya changes the subject when asked if she's looking for a fella.

In the factory, Tim has come to see Sally with a bouquet of flowers. He's apologizing for missing the date night. Everyone is watching with big grins on their faces and even Carla seems amused. He is applauded for his romantic demonstration but then they tease her about men bringing flowers to work to hide something they've done that they shouldn't have.

Simon arrives to see his dad. The first thing he asks if his father has had a drink. When told no, he launches into his dad's arms. Peter thanks Leanne for bringing him. She tells Peter it's his last chance with Simon. They have an awkward conversation but admit they missed each other. Peter gives Simon the diary he wrote in prison for him. They talk about a project Simon's done for school but the Simon admits he's not ready to read the prison diary. Peter's ok with that. He reckons Simon will when he feels ready. They hug again and Peter apologizes to him.

Carla comes to Sally looking for a phone number. She gets up to show her where she left it but Carla's phone rings and she strides off to take the call. The factory bees speculate that Peter will try to get Carla back. They wonder if Carla will or won't take him back. Carla returns and gives them great news, a new client wants 10,000 pairs of knickers and they all cheer. Carla says drinks are on her tonight.

Katy is trying out her skill at making a sling for an arm, trying it out on Gary and failing. Tony comes in looking for a few good men to help out at a building site. Gary and Zeedan are on board. Gary tells the group, but main is telling Alya, he's heading into town tonight at 7:30 by bus to meet mates for a film. I.E. they must have a secret date.

Cilla comes into the kebab shop to see Chesney and to get a free kebab. She says she's joking but he doesn't think she was. But he gives her one anyway. Cilla compares Craig with his cheeky grin with a younger Chesney and says she missed Chesney. Chesney charges her for the kebab.

Jason and Eileen are visiting Todd who's fairly quiet. Sounds like his face hurts because he says he can't chew the chocolates that Liz had sent over. Sean and Julie pop in for a visit as well. Julie's brought chocolates. When asked, Todd says the police haven't found the assailant. Todd gets a flash of pain and calls for a nurse who comes in and says he'll get some painkillers and also change the dressing on the wound. Everyone is asked to leave while he does this.

Peter tells Ken all about Simon's project. Ken is glad it went well and offers a Chinese for tea. Peter says he'd like to go to the pub though won't drink. Ken tries to persuade him not to, mainly because of the reaction of other people but Peter is tired of not being able to go out and figures he can handle it. Ken reminds Peter that Carla's made it clear that she doesn't want to see him. Peter knows, so he says, but he wants to celebrate his release.

In the hospital, Todd wants a mirror but the nurse is hesitant to let him see his wound. Too soon! A doctor comes in and allows a mirror. Todd sees his swollen and broken face for the first time and is shocked. He's also told that there will likely be permanent scarring. When Eileen and the others come in, Todd shouts at them to leave, turning his face away from them.

Carla celebrates with the girls in the pub. Sophie thinks Sally is being paranoid about Tim and there's nothing wrong. She and Maddy suggest Sally getting dressed up in something nice and wooing him. At the bar, Tony tells Michelle that Jason has sent a message that Todd's face is quite a mess. Peter and Ken arrive and Carla goes quiet when Peter greets her.

Carla's busy trying to celebrate her big order in the Rovers while simultaneously trying to ignore Peter who's desperate to talk to her. Peter's persistence finally pays off and she agrees to go through to the back and give him five minutes of her time - anything to avoid a scene.

Eileen goes back in to see Todd, along with Sean, Julie and Jason. But he's in no fit state to see visitors. All he wants is to be left alone to wallow in his misery - he tells them the doctor says he could be scarred for life. Sean tries telling him they can do wonders with plastic surgery nowadays but it doesn't help. Todd sends them all away, he doesn't even want Eileen to stay with him.

If Peter had been hoping for a romantic reunion with Carla she soon puts him straight. He thanks her for sticking by him in the court and says it was her love that got him through. She explains she didn't betray her brother for his sake. She did it for her own conscience and for Ken, Simon, and even Tracy, because she thought they deserved to know the truth. She asks Peter, her voice dripping with sarcasm, if he thought they could renew their wedding vows and try for another baby. He replies that they could try and then his faces falls as the penny finally drops. Carla goes to leave but Peter tells her he's been waiting for this moment for four months. He begs her to let him say the words he's been longing to say if this really is to be their last conversation.

Tim comes home to find Sally all glammed up and Sophie about to go out. He's confused, he thought Sally and Sophie were going out together. Sally tells Tim they're going to stay in and have a date night and he'll just have to explain to his friend who's going through a divorce he'll have to cry on Tim's shoulder another night. Then Tim's phone rings. He switches it off, claiming it's a wrong number and gives Sally a hug. We see her looking worried - does Tim have a guilty secret?

Zeedan is working out in the gym. He and Kal start to argue about the fact Zee's got a labouring job and Alya joins in the discussion. Kal thinks Zee could be doing something better and using his brain. Alya tells her father he's a snob - what's wrong with being a builder? Zee doesn't want to be told what to do with his life. He doesn't even want his father giving him advice on how to do a work out. Alya announces to her dad that she won't be in for dinner - she's going into town to meet her friend Neesha.

Beth arrives in the Rovers where the girls fill her in on the gossip and tell her Carla's in the back with Peter. Tracy comes past and Beth risks asking her if she's alright. No, Tracy isn't alright. She's got it in for Carla and says she'd better not risk going anywhere near any balconies.

In the back, Peter's made a brew. He's still trying to sweet talk Carla but she's having none of it. Peter tells her he's a changed man. She replies that she's a changed woman. He might have thought that time stood still while he was inside but Carla tells him she's landed a huge contract, bought a flat and is planning a holiday. She tells him he's out of prison now and it's time to get real and that he ruined any chance there was for the two of them. Carla goes to leave the room but Peter jumps up and bars her way. He starts to beg and tells Carla she's wrong and he's not going to let her go.

Out in the bar Michelle tells Ken and Tracy she's going to check if Carla is alright. "What, the black widow?" snipes Tracy, causing Michelle to snap. She points out Tracy still owes her for her "non-wedding" and adds that Rob had a lucky escape, avoiding a life sentence with her. Tracy replies that Rob was going to pay and she's skint. Tracy storms off and Ken tells Michelle that was below the belt. Michelle apologises but says that Tracy asks for it sometimes.

In the back, Peter's turned to physical means to try and convince Carla. First he grabs hold of her, then he gets down on his knees and starts to beg, telling her that when he thought he was going to die it was only her love that got him through. Carla tells him to get it into his thick skull that they're never, ever going to get back together and that he's not even worth her sarcasm. With that, she walks out.

Ches is at home with Cilla and Craig. He's got tea on the table but his mum and Craig are engrossed playing a video game together. Ches listens sadly in the background while Cilla asks Craig if he'd like to go to the Bingo with her. Craig says he's meant to be going on a school trip but he doesn't like to ask his mum for the money when she has her wedding to pay for. Cilla offers to try and win the money for him at Bingo - it'll be their little secret.

Tim finally manages to make his escape from Sally. He hurries round to Anna's to explain why he didn't make it. He's still pretty reluctant to have lessons, worried he might fail again. Anna reminds him of all the things he'll be able to do, like speaking at the Christmas auction and reading Faye's school reports. He can't stop now, Tim tells Anna, but he promises faithfully to come round again tomorrow while Faye's at choir practice.

Tracy's in the ladies' at the Rovers, washing her tear-stained face at the basin when Carla comes in. She tells Tracy they're not worth it, either of them, before giving Tracy what could almost be classed as an affectionate pat on her shoulder.

Beth and Sinead have come home and are eating tea with Ches, Cilla and Craig. Beth instructs Craig to eat some salad, it's good for him. He's not keen so Cilla sends Beth off to get her some salt. The moment Beth's back's turned, Cilla scrapes the salad off Craig's plate. Disgusted with the way his mum is giving Craig the attention she never gave him, Ches announces he's going out for a walk.

Norris is having a drink in the Bistro with Rita. She tells him to stop listening in on Julie, Jason and Sean's conversation about Todd. Norris moves on to the subject of Peter Barlow so Rita asks if he's still feeling bad about going round accusing Peter of being guilty. So Norris changes the subject again and starts stressing about what's become of his missing parcel.

Over by the bar Julie tells Jason and Sean she's worried that Eileen may be blaming herself about what's happened to Todd. As they talk we see Norris's ears prick up as Julie says the words "random mugging". Sean comments that it was dark and they came out of nowhere. "So he says," exclaims Norris, unable to resist interfering in their conversation. Jason is furious, especially when Norris suggests that Todd may have provoked the attack. Sean takes Jason out before there's another fight, leaving Julie to put Norris straight.

Sinead's out looking for Ches. She tries the cafe but Gary's the only person in there.

Gary comes out and meets up with Alya. They're off to see a film together but just then they see her dad and Zee coming out of the gym. They hide behind the van and overhear Zee and Kal's conversation. One minute Kal and Zee seem to have patched things up but the next Kal says that he meant what he said about Zee working for Tony. Zee refuses his dad's offer of a lift home and says he's going to walk. Gary asks Alya what's up with the pair of them. She either doesn't know or doesn't want to talk about it and leads Gary off in the direction of the cinema.

Across the street Norris and Rita are on their way home when they encounter Chesney. He seems upset so Rita sends Norris on ahead and stops to talk to Ches. He opens up to her and says how hard it is to have Cilla back. He's still bitter about the way she treated him, particularly the fact that she made him give up Schmeichel. And now he's sees the way his mum is making the effort with Craig, it's making him feel even worse Ches tells Rita.

In the hospital, Todd's face is looking horrific. We see him look at himself in a mirror and peel away one of the dressings. He touches his face and starts to sob.

Ches arrives home. It looks as though everyone has gone to bed but Sinead comes out of the kitchen. Wordlessly, she goes across to Ches and wraps him in her arms.

Round at the Barlows', Ken, Peter and Tracy have gathered in the sitting room. Tracy is still feeling bitter, she can't understand why Peter's still defending Carla. He says it's because he thinks she was right not to give him a second chance and that what goes around comes around. Tracy reflects that may be the reason she's lost Rob. Ken becomes philosophical and tells the two of them that life's a journey and mistakes create change. Tracy asks what that means. Peter says it means that the only way is up as he gives Tracy a hug.

Wednesday 12 November

Ken and Tracy are discussing Peter and what happened with Carla. Peter comes downstairs and hears them and professes his love for Carla. Ken tells him that it's hard, but he has to let go, now is the time to start rebuilding his life. Tracy opens the post and is aghast to find a bill for tea lights at the wedding that never happened. "What was I thinking?" she says. Just then Michelle arrives, and flings an envelope down on the table in front of Peter. "Carla asked me to give you that," she says. It's Carla's wedding ring. Michelle leaves and Peter stares at the ring for a moment and then takes his own off and puts it beside the other one.

Maddie and Sophie are round at Sally's. Sophie starts to ask how it went last night, when Tim comes downstairs. They hastily change the subject and Sally asks them round for tea later. Just then Tim's phone rings. He seems to be ignoring it until Sally asks if he's going to get that. He looks at it, it's Anna. "Hello Paul," he says, and then makes an arrangement for 2pm, and then tells Sally it was his mate who wants help later. Sally and Sophie glance at each other.

Cilla is treating Sinead and Chesney to breakfast in the cafe. Katy comes in and asks if they can babysit Joseph for an hour or two later on, she's got a meeting with the St. John's Ambulance brigade. Chesney says he can't, he's going to be working in the kebab shop. He and Sinead then leave. Cilla then offers to have him and Katy accepts.

A bruised and battered Todd arrives at Eileen's house. Jason tells him that Eileen has popped over to see Lloyd about changing her shifts, she wants to spend a few days looking after him. Eva tells him she's bought him a dvd boxed set to keep him entertained. Todd says they don't have to nurse him, and points out that if they'd been so keen to spend time with him before, this would never have happened.

In the factory, the girls are discussing what happened last night between Peter and Carla, and Beth says she had money on the outcome. "Once a cheater, always a cheater," says Fiz, and Sally looks thoughtful. Carla comes in then and tells them that whoever had money on her and Peter getting back together had better pay out.

Gary and Zee are loading the van when Alya appears with a coffee for Zee. Gary asks why he didn't get one. "He's my brother, why would I get you one?" she says. Zee tells Alya that Gary has spent all morning chatting up a bird next door to the house they were working on. When Zee is out of earshot, Alya asks Gary about her, he says he was just trying to keep peace with the neighbours, it's all part of the service, he wasn't chatting her up.

Tracy is in the shop trying to save her pennies by asking for a reduction on a dented tin. Sophie tells her to just buy a tin that isn't dented. "Well come back to me on that one when you have to pay for a wedding that didn't happen," snaps Tracy. "Been there, actually," says Sophie. Carla and Michelle come in, buy something, and then go out again, talking all the while about all the orders that Underworld have just landed. Tracy, looking at the food in the 'reduced' section, doesn't look happy.

Anna and Owen are talking about a flat they think they'll have to move to. It's a fair way away and Anna feels Faye won't be happy. Just then Tim knocks at the door for his reading lesson. Tim is edgy, seeing Owen there, but Anna tells him not to worry, Owen knows why he's there, they don't keep secrets from each other. Owen says he's off upstairs anyway, he has a pile of paperwork to go through. Tim is worried - does Faye know? Anna assures him that she doesn't.

Cilla is in Chesney's house, looking after Joseph. On her way downstairs she trips and falls, and then seems to be in great deal of pain.

Peter is putting a red rose at the spot where Tina died, when Steph comes along. She's furious, and shouts at him that Tina would still be alive today if she hadn't met him. She tells him the entire street hates him, and she hopes it eats away at him, every waking second. He tells her that if he could swap places with Tina, he would. Steph gets even crosser, she snatches up the rose and shreds it, shouting that the only person he feels sorry for is himself. She marches off up the road, leaving Peter to pick up the petals of his rose.

Faye and Craig arrive at the house to find Cilla moving gingerly. She asks if they can stay with Joseph while she goes to the doctor's. She tells them to phone Chesney at the kebab shop, she doesn't have the number. She's sure he will come straight home. Faye assures her that they'll be fine, Katy is her sister and she looks after Joseph all the time. Cilla goes off out of the door.

At Anna's house, she's made a cuppa and is urging Tim to settle down again and concentrate. He's in a flippant mood, and she scolds him. Then he says it's boring. "Is it boring, or are you scared you won't be able to do it?" she asks. She hands him a newspaper and he starts to read. Just then Owen comes downstairs and Tim stops. Anna moans at Owen and tells him to go to the pub.

Peter is at home, looking at his wedding rings and with a bottle of vodka on the table in front of him. Just then Ken comes in through the front door with Simon and Peter hastily puts the vodka into his jacket pocket. Ken urges Simon to sit down and goes to move Peter's jacket. He hears the clink of the bottle and stops short, frowning at Peter. Simon says he's going to ask Leanne if he can stay at Ken and Deirdre's a couple of nights a week. Peter, somewhat embarrassed, tells him to let him settle in first.

Faye and Craig are outside on the pavement with Joseph asking him if he'd like to get some sweeties. Just then Michelle comes along and is puzzled to see the kids with Joseph. She asks where Chesney is and they explain about Cilla going to the doctor's. Just then Steph comes along, followed by Chesney. They tell him that Cilla had to go to the doctor's, and Ches wants to know where Katy is. He's furious that she's left Joseph with Cilla. "This is what my mam does, every time," he tells them, "I'm going to kill her!"

Zee and Gary are in the cafe when Alya and Kal come in. Zee goes off out and Alya and Kal sit with Gary. Gary tells them that Zee has done well today, but Kal hopes he doesn't like it too much. Gary points out that there are worse ways to make a living, but Kal says Zee is a bright lad. "And Gary isn't?" snaps Alya. Gary tells Kal that Zee is 19 years old and is earning 30 quid a day. That's not bad for labouring. Kal is cross, and says that's not even minimum wage, and realises he's not on the books. He reckons Tony should be reported, he's not going to have Zeedan used as cheap labour. Alya says that if Zee is happy Kal should leave him to it, but Kal plans to speak to Tony. He gets up and leaves and Alya hurries after him.

Fiz and Tyrone are in the pub with Beth, and Tyrone asks Jason how Todd is. Jason says he's at home, but shaken up. Just then Fiz gets a phone call - her mother is in A & E, they have to go.

Sophie and Maddie are with Sally, getting the tea ready. Tim comes in and tells Sally he's been cleaning windows in Inkerman Street. She says she thought he was helping his mate. He says that was this morning, but she reminds him that he's said 2pm. She's obviously suspicious.

At Chesney's house, there's an inquest going on as to what happened. Katy asks why Faye didn't ring Anna or Owen. Faye says she looks after Joseph all the time. "Not on your own you don't," says Katy. Chesney can't believe Katy left Joseph with Cilla. Katy points out that Cilla is his grandma. "She's not fit to look after a hamster," snaps Ches. Just then the door opens and Fiz and Tyrone come in with Cilla who is walking very slowly and carefully. "No one's buying it!" snaps Chesney, and tells her she doesn't think about anyone but herself. Ches rants on about all the times she left him when he was a kid, he says she hasn't changed. She tells him it's not like that, she fell on the stairs, she has a fractured vertebrae.

Eileen tells Todd that Lloyd has said she can take off as much time as she needs. He tells her he's on the mend and he's lucky, it could have been worse.

Cilla is explaining how the medical centre sent her to A & E. Chesney says he left her lots of messages, but she tells him her battery was dead. She's been given a treatment plan and she has to see a specialist. "Round here?" asks Fiz. "No, Wolverhampton," says Cilla. Fiz wonders if they can't do it in Manchester. "We can look after you, can't we Ches?" says Fiz. "No," says Chesney, "I'm not nurse-maiding her." He goes on to say that she's been a rubbish mother. Sinead points out that Cilla is seriously ill, but Chesney shouts at her not to defend Cilla, she's only known her for five minutes. He tells Cilla that he hasn't seen her for years and then as soon as she is ill she shows up - what a surprise! "Do what you want Fiz, but I'm not going to nurse her, I've got a son to look after."

At the Barlow's, Ken and Tracy are waiting for Peter to return. He then comes in and Ken asks if he's downed the vodka. Peter pulls the full bottle out of his pocket and puts it on the table. Tracy reminds him that the last time he drank he nearly died, what will it take him to stop? Peter says that he just wanted to pour the whole lot down his throat and to hell with the consequences, but the thing that stopped him was Simon. He says that everywhere he goes he is reminded of Carla and Tina, it's constant torture. The only chance he has is if he leaves. He's going to make a fresh start, the sooner he moves away the better!

Friday 14 November

Hi again. Yes, it is still me ... You must have been bad in your earlier years to deserve me now !!

We start with little Amy telling Tracy that Eccles is looking at her funnily. Tracy tells her she is not, and tells her to be quiet as she has not had much sleep and has a headache.

Ken comes down, and says that Peter's room is empty. Tracy says she knows and that it was empty when she got up about an hour ago. He is worried that Peter may have gone drinking.

Kal and Alya are walking down the street, to the Yard to see Tony. Alya is worried that he will show Zeedan up. Kal sees Tony and accuses him of paying his son 'peanuts'.

Ken finds Peter in the cafe. Peter explains he has to sort some things out before he goes off to Portsmouth (a very nice place on the South coast of England, my wife is down there at the moment !). Owen overhears the conversation. He asks Peter if his flat is up for rent. He asks them if they are interested; Anna confirms they are desperate, so he invites them round to have a look. Owen says he has to go to Court for a repossession hearing. Anna thinks to ask Peter how much rent he wants. Peter says he will think about it and come back to them.

Back at the Yard, Kal complains to Tony that paying Zeedan £30 a day is below the minimum wage for someone of his age. He tells Tony that he is exploiting him. Zeedan arrives and tells his Dad to leave.

Tim has come into the cafe and Anna offers him a top-up of tea. She invites him round to her house at lunchtime. Sophie and Sally then join him. Sally asks what Anna wanted. He said that she asked him if he wanted a top-up

Peter goes into The Rovers. Steve says he can't serve him any alcohol. He says he doesn't want a drink, he has just come in to say "goodbye". Peter tells Steve that he holds no hard feelings about the evidence he gave at the trial, and tells him that he is off to Portsmouth.

Michelle comes into the bar and Steve tells her about Peter. She is delighted for him. Michelle asks if he has told Carla, he says he hasn't but will do. Michelle tells him that she will tell Carla.

Cilla and Kirk(y) come in to the Bar. She tells them how upset she is about Chesney. Cilla says it is time she went back to Wolverhampton (in the Midlands).

Peter meets Tracy at the second-hand shop. He confirms to her that he is still going. Tracy tells him that Carla has won. Peter says that she hasn't. It was his own decision to go down South. Leanne rings Peter, and she confirms Simon is home.

Carla come into see Michelle. She wonders if Michelle is writing her memoirs ! Michelle confirms she is and that she is getting to the 'steamy bit' !! Carla gives her the magazines that she borrowed. Michelle tells Carla that she saw Peter and that he is gong away. She says he reckons it will be permanent. Carla says he often goes to Portsmouth but comes back with 'his tail between his legs. Carla asks what Michelle is doing, and she says it is only the staff rota. She says because Steve is so distant with her she is going to put him on the rota to work with her all the time. She misses him.

At the Barlows, Peter is explaining to Simon why he is going. He tells him that some people don't like him because they thought he killed Tina. Peter explains it is not far. Simon looks it up on his phone, and says it is 250 miles away, which would take 4 hours drive and longer by train. Peter tells Simon he can visit anytime. Simon is upset and asks Leanne to take him back to school. and leaves without saying goodbye.

Michelle and Steve are in the pub, but it is very quiet. Steve confirms that Eva is behind the bar, so Michelle says they can have their own 'quiet time' together. Steve goes to the bar and tells Eva that she can go and take as long as she wants!

Zeedan joins Kal and Alya in the Rovers. He tells Kal that he has got it wrong about Tony and that he is a good boss. He says he is still in a job, no thanks to Kal.

Peter gives Ken his and Carla's wedding rings. He wants Ken to sell them and put the money into Simon's account.

Norris goes round to see Kev. He is complaining about his parcel. Kev says he hasn't got his parcel and it nothing to do with him. Sally and Sophie come over. Norris then complains to Sally that Tim hasn't been to clean his windows.

Tracy catches up with Carla, on the Street. Tracy is ready for a good argument ! However Ken calls Tracy to tell her that Peter is leaving prison.

Meanwhile Tim is at Anna's place learning to read. Tim's phone rings, it is Sally, but Tim decides to ignore it.

Steve and Lloyd are in The Rovers complaining about one of their new drivers. It seems he leaves his cab in a mess with coke bottles and wrappers etc.

Michelle comes to the bar, and puts her arm around Steve, and wonders what is happening. He explains that Eva had to go for an emergency and he is stuck behind the bar, helping out.

Tyrone and Fiz hear their toilet flush for the fourth time! Cilla comes down and tells them they have run out of air freshener (don't even think about it !!). Fiz says that she and Tyrone have been talking. Tyrone continues, that it would be a good idea if Fiz went back to Wolverhampton with her and stays with her until she has recovered from her operation. (This gives Jenny McAlpine maternity leave!). Cilla is reluctant at first, but agrees in the end.

Alya goes to the yard and meets Gary. She tells him what happened earlier, and that Zeedan is really annoyed. Gary then starts talking about his family. He says Owen is in court about the repossession order over the house. They start to kiss and are spotted by Leanne, who asks what is going on.

Peter is saying his final goodbyes to Ken and Tracy. Ken asks if he is doing the right thing. Peter says he hopes so. Simon comes rushing in and begs his Dad not to go.

So will Peter leave Simon? Will Leanne tell anybody what she saw? How are Tim's reading lessons progressing? I am sure Richard will have all the information once he has told you about what he has been doing over the week .... I don't because my life is too boring in comparison !!!!!

(Can I just say I got half way through this report, and had to stop. Imagine what went through my mind when I came back to it and at first I thought it wasn't there and would have to start again!!)

Another week has passed, but here in update towers it was uneventful until I forgot to go to the medical appointment booked on Friday afternoon. Arriving about 20 minutes late they were not sure I could be seen, which is odd really because quite I often I arrive on time to be seen 20 minutes late. Anyway I was seen eventually but they had decided they did not have the drugs I needed so I have to go again next Thursday. And to a different surgery. Luckily I am not ill.

No doubt you will be more interested in events in Weatherfield where tonight most of us bid a fond farewell to the latest departure and where the next steps in Steve's illness are portrayed. Writing was by Damon Rochefort, the director was Alan Grint and the copyright remains the property of ITV Studios to whom many thanks.

We open where the last episode closed at No1 - the Barlow residence - with Simon saying he is sorry to Peter for being horrible to him. Peter tries to stop him but Simon continues that he has been - he thought that his dad had killed Tina. And now Peter is going and Simon feels responsible. Ken intervenes to point out that is not why Peter is leaving. Eva backs up the point and Peter takes the chance to offer Simon that they go and get some chips together. Peter is starving and he thinks Simon might be as well. Peter hugs his son.

At the builder's yard Leanne wants to know how long the tonsil tennis between Gary and Alya has been going on. Gary tries to deny it but Alya says that it is all right and she admits they are seeing each other - but she does not want her father Kal knowing just yet. Leanne points out that Kal is her boyfriend. Alya points out that Leanne kept her relationship secret for a period. Leanne says that was more to do with Nick and their split. Gary says his position with Izzy is similar. Leanne says they do not have to keep it secret from Kal. Alya says she is not 12 and if she wants to keep her relationship quiet that is her business. And if she wants to hire a plane and sky-write the news over the town hall then that is her business too. Leanne says it does not bother her - but she is not sure Kal will have the same opinion.

At Anna's she is saying farewell to Tim after another session (of teaching him to read). He feels like a kid but she tells him not to be so daft. Owen and Izzy arrive and Anna says she has been advising Tim on Faye's Xmas present. Owen only has bad news - they will lose the house. She gives him a big hug. She says it is only bricks and mortar.

In the bistro Cilla, Fiz, Ty and Beth are wondering where Ches is. Beth says Fiz was lucky to skive when they are so busy with these huge new orders. Cilla corrects her, saying she is looking after her sick mother. Beth says she would not want to look after her mother who had flu during the Queen's Jubilee and was so annoyed at missing it that she bit Beth who was trying to feed her a yoghurt. Cilla recognizes a kindred spirit. Fiz suggests that Cilla should pop by the kebab shop before they go. Cilla responds that Ches knows where to find them.

At the kebab shop Sinead is giving Ches the same earache over seeing his mother. He refuses. And he recalls when he had the mumps and it snowed and he could not go out to play but Cilla went out sledging with her mates. (Not Australian cricket sledging!). She came back hours later, bladdered and smacks him in the face with a snowball (the non-alcoholic version). Ches's view is that the sooner Cilla goes the better.

In the Street on Maxeem's bench Simon wants to know why things cannot go back to normal. Peter says just too much has happened. Carla comes along and looks at the uneaten chips. Simon says that Peter is going because of her hating Peter. Carla tells him to move up and she sits down next to Simon. She asks Simon if he thinks she is a right cow. He agrees. Carla says that he is being honest. She asks if she can be honest with Si and he agrees. She did not like him much when they first met. He asks why - but we all know how difficult he was. She calls him a right little know-it-all, with an angelic face who knew how to get her goat and wind her round his little finger. As Tracy emerges Carla places her arm around Simon and gives him a huge hug. But now she has got to know him she has grown dead fond of him. Tracy observes this touching moment and it reinforces her belief of the evil within Carla (at least judging by the look on her face).

Carla continues that things have worked out a bit rubbish between her and Peter, but she would cut her own arm off to save Simon from misery and she knows he knows that. Tracy goes into the Rovers. But Simon still wants to know why Carla is making Peter go. But Peter says he has to go, not because of Carla - but because he is a mess. He has got to sort his head out, stop the drinking - he has to work why he has behaved. Carla says she has a different solution - she hops on a plane to USA, thousands of miles. Peter is going to Portsmouth. Carla always comes back and she is sure Peter will return as well. Peter agrees. And Carla makes a promise that if Simon wants to see Peter she will make sure that Simon gets there. She won't come - no chance of seeing her in Portsmouth!! [Carla I am surprised - there is the Gunwharf Quays shops, the Spinnaker tower, the Victory and the Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum; for those who have not seen the latter it is an absolutely stunning building containing an absolutely stunning warship; it may not be an obvious place for a holiday but frankly the city has been transformed over recent years. If Carla ever changes her mind I will give her a guided tour!]. Carla nicks a chip and departs - but Simon is smiling again. As she goes Peter says "See you then" and she turns and responds "Not if I see you first" - but already we can detect that the story between these two is far from over as the look between them last a fraction too long.

Inside the Rovers Tracy is sounding off about Carla to Liz, Eva (hiding behind a beer pump) and Ken. Tracy also believes that Peter is going because of Carla and Ken tries to tell her otherwise. Tracy's mobile goes off. It is Peter and he is now ready to go. Ken and Tracy depart.

Mary is asking about the lasagne but Kev noticed nothing - she made it herself. And goes on and on about the secret that her mother taught her. Kev, Sal and Soph are not interested but eventually she tells them that it is orange zest. Sal wants to know where Anna is - apparently Mary had to cover at short notice. Sal is almost beside herself with worry and has not eaten her sandwich. Sal is dismissive of the orange zest. Tim arrives and Sal wants to know where he has been for the last 40 minutes. He apologises but Sal storms out and returns to work.

Peter is getting into the car - he refuses to write, but he will phone and he and Simon will Skype every night. Peter praises Carla for the conversation she had with Simon. Steve wants to get going. Peter thanks his father for all of his support. Then he thanks Leanne, whom he accuses of trying to smell his breath. She merely says "Old habits". Simon wants to know where his farewell hug is - but Peter says that he can come to the station to see him off on the train. As Steve drive down the Street Carla comes out of the Kabin and stops and once again she and Peter exchange a meaningful look and there just might be tears in her eyes for what might have been.

Time for a break

So we open the second half with Michelle observing that she and Steve are working together tonight. Steve arrives and is almost monosyllabic. He is off to the cab office and Michelle reminds him to be back at 5 for his shift. Michelle is worried what it is going to be like in 5 or 10 years time.

Along the Street Fiz hiding behind a couple of very large bags is also getting ready to go. Cilla gets into the car and Ty is doing the driving to Wolverhampton. Cilla gives Craig some money for the school trip. Looking out of the window Ches watches his mother depart.

Katy and Steph are talking about paramedics again when Steve comes in shrugs off his coat and settles onto a bar stool. Steph wants to know if he is spying on them - but he says not, a change of scene and can he have a pint please. Katie is testing a cocktail - Steph has invented the "Weatherfield Sour" and Steve asks if it was named after Tracy. Steve asks if he can try it as well. He acknowledges that it has a kick. Steve asks for one as well as the pint she poured.

Sal is going through Tim's jacket pockets and Sophie accuses her of snooping which she denies. She finds a petrol receipt for the M62 which she does not understand. She carries on that if he is having an affair. Sophie tells her to stop jumping to conclusions. Sal wants to believe he is not having an affair - but she thinks he has been seeing Anna.

In Roy's Rolls, Alya apologises to Leanne for earlier. Leanne won't lie to Kal. Leanne says Kal will eventually find out. Alya says it is not religion - Gary has been inside, has no career prospects and has a kid (so just why are you going out with him Alya?). Leanne says Kal has accepted her past and if he finds out that Alya has been lying he will be furious and hurt and he be right. Leanne asks not to be in this position.

In the Rovers Tim arrives and says "Pint?" to Kev who replies "yeah" and Tim then adds "Arrers?" and Kev replies positively. Liz who has been listening observes that she just loves it when let rip with their emotions like that!!

On the other side of the bar Carla arrives and orders a glass of red and Tracy then appears at her side. Liz asks Carla about Simon and Tracy pokes her beak in and wants to know why she is asking Carla. Liz reminds Tracy that it is her pub. Which Carla says to Tracy is what the kids mean about "being owned". Liz also wants to know where Steve is as he is over half an hour late. Tracy says who can blame him. Liz fires back that she is allowed one comment - but would she like a drink or is she just standing there making snide comments. Tracy wants to do both. Carla offers to buy her a drink but Tracy observes that anyone who drinks with Carla ends up mad, jailed or dead. She orders glass of red from Liz. Carla says she tried.

Kev asks Tim if he has found out what was wrong with Sal - but they agree that it could be almost anything under the sun.

Back at the Bistro Steve has three halves in front of him and has challenged Katie to drink her three shots before he drinks his drinks without touching the other's glasses. Katie does not see how she can lose but of course it is an old. Steve drinks one half and then puts the glass upside down over the last shot and so Katie cannot touch his glass and he has plenty of time to finish the other two halves.

Kal, Zeedan and Gary are eating chips when Alya and Leanne appear. For the moment Leanne is saying nothing. Once the other have gone in different directions Gary thanks Leanne - but she is not comfortable and something will need saying soon. Leanne goes and Izzy arrives - but Alya is on the point of breaking them up. Izzy tells Gary about the house news.

Steve wanders into the Rovers and is obviously ever so slightly completely drunk. He denies knowing the rota had changed. Michelle accuses him of being drink and he admits being in the bistro. Steve refuses to do his shift saying he is drunk and needs forty winks. And it is probably illegal. Michelle is not amused.

Owen, Anna, Gary and Izzy discuss the housing crisis as the flat will not be big enough for Gary. Izzy offers him a sofa. Beth arrives and Tracy asks if she fancies a drink. She orders a pint and chats to Tracy about Kirk. Carla returns and Beth calls her Mrs Connor but Tracy thinks she should be Mrs Barlow. But Carla confirms she is Mrs Connor again. Tracy calls Carla an expert at moving on, leaving a trail of misery in her wake as she is a heartless cow. Liz warns Tracy again. Tracy continues - she shopped her own brother, chased Peter away and now she stands there drinking as if it is all in a day's work. Carla says she will tell Tracy why she got Rob banged up. She did it because it was the right thing to do - something which Tracy might not understand. It was the only decent thing she could do and it will haunt her for the rest of her life. Tracy observes that she has lost everything because of Carla. Carla observes that people like Tracy only lose things because of themselves. She only set Rob up to save her own skin. So she should not come all holier than thou. She tells Tracy that she backed the wrong horse. Beth says that Tracy asked for that. Tracy would love to wipe the smug grin off of Carla's face. Tracy is going to make sure that cow gets just what is coming to her.

Roll credits

So farewell Peter, enjoy panto and everything else. Stay sober and we look forward to your return. Bring that nice Ciaran with you. He always has an eye for the girls.

And also farewell to Fiz for now. Jennie McAlpine needs a few months away and I am sure we wish the family well. Hopefully as she will have departed a few weeks ago the actual arrival will not be long delayed.

Kev and Tim are turning into quite a nice double act. I hope that all concerned have the sense to keep that going for some time to come.

And finally there is the surprising news from Neighbours that Harold and Madge (the latter of course has been in Emmerdale) are returning to the show. Sadly we cannot see the return of Jack and Vera but there is contract news. Callum is staying and Jenny Bradley (daughter of Alan) is returning. I wonder what she has been doing since her last visit.

See you next week.

Richard

Monday 17 November

Now. Karen is really busy this week so I've done the update for both parts of tonight's Corrie and I'm bringing it to you in one neat tidy email.

Part 1

Written by Julie Jones
Directed by Lee Salisbury

Sally is being a very good partner to Tim this morning, with a full cooked breakfast and a cheery face. She admits to Sophie that she's lulling him into a false sense of security so she can keep a close eye on him. Tim tells her he's working all day but she doesn't seem to believe it.

Craig is going on a school trip thanks to money from Cilla. Chesney admits to Sinead he's been on bad terms with his mother most of his life and Cilla isn't worth trying to find the good side of her.

Gail and Michael both have the afternoon off. Gail suggests Christmas shopping but Michael wants to return to the bar where Gavin's ex girlfriend works. Gail offers to go with him so he doesn't come home legless like last time. He seems amenable.

Michelle has American western props all over the bar. She's organizing a "hoedown" and is trying to source some hay bales for the guests to sit on. Liz shivers in disgust. Tony leaves with a kiss and lets Owen in as he leaves. Owen has come to see Tony for some work. Tony does have a job on that Owen could help with. They make plans to meet at the yard in a bit. Owen tries on one of the straw cowboy hats before he leaves. Nice look. Steve stumbles down the stairs, very much the worse for wear after the cocktail evening at the Bistro. Liz tells him off for not helping Michelle who tells him she's got it all in hand so he staggers back upstairs again. Liz can tell Michelle is angry.

In the cafe, Anna is telling Tim about the new, smaller flat, noting that Gary will be sleeping on the sofa. (I thought they were housing Katy and Joseph, too but I just remembered that she's living with Steph these days) Tim wants another lesson and they make plans for later. Anna checks her phone as Owen comes in to surprise her and tell her that Tony has some work for him. He goes off with a smile.

Craig and Faye are waiting at the bus stop. Faye isn't going on the school trip to the football museum. Craig offers her some money but she bristles at the charity. They chat a bit about it and he offers her a tenner again but this time she just politely turns him down.

Back to the cafe, Anna brings Tim a cuppa and sits down for a minute to help him while he deciphers the newspaper. He's a little discouraged and they have a laugh just as Sally comes by and sees them through the window.

Katy is telling Alya about being a paramedic but she can't drive. Zeedan makes a flirtatious joke about the kiss of life and winds up Alya just as Kal and Leanne come in. Kal doesn't mind Katy's remark about spending the next five years behind the desk at the gym and reminds Alya that she has a university degree which is not to be wasted. Zeedan takes that as a shot at his prospects. (He's on his gap year)

Liz thinks the hoedown sounds like fun but wonders why Michelle let Steve off the hook. Michelle explains that she has no idea what Steve is going through but if he comes out the other side, she'll be there waiting. The client comes in to see Michelle for another last minute consultation. He's brought in and introduced to Liz. He's asking for a mechanical bull. It is obvious that the man has taken an instant shine to Liz. He even offers to show her that he can still wrap his legs around his neck (it's his birthday tomorrow and he's 70 if he's a day). Liz zips up her top to her neck.

Sophie takes the washing in off the line. She notices Tim going in to Anna's from the back, and he's carrying flowers! Uh oh. Sophie tells Maddie that Sally suspected something was going on and she thought her mother was being paranoid. Now Sophie has to tell her.

The Hoedown guy, Len, puts a romantic country song on the jukebox. The client notes the full sized cutout cowboy Michelle has brought out and wonders if he could get one of Conway Twitty! He muses about the Country singing greats and has one last shot, maybe Liz, dressed as a cowgirl, could jump out of a cake? Tony has just walked in and heard the end of that conversation. Liz just smiles and says goodbye, Len while Tony chuckles. Liz unzips her cleavage for Tony after Len leaves (funny little scene, this).

Elsewhere, Maddie and Sophie are trying to figure out what to do and Sophie is freaking out. Sophie asks Maddie to ask Sally to come talk to Sophie. Carla comes in followed by Sinead and Sean who ask about an interviewee for the training job. They were unimpressed and it turns out, so was Carla. Conveniently, Alya is standing at the bar, too, and overhears that Carla is looking for a manager trainee. She asks to be considered. Zeedan even sticks up for her as a grafter. Carla agrees and sets a time for 2 p.m.

Steve comes over to the garage to ask if he can get one of his cars valeted owing to a very messy cab driver on their roster. No problem. Steve leaves the cab there. Steph and Katy come along and tease Steve about the shape he was in the night before. He makes a total pratt of himself in the classic Steve way, and goes into the Kabin.

Sally is thoughtful and isn't paying much attention to Sean and Sinead who are relaying the news about Alya applying for the job. Sean asks if Sally is going to throw her hat in the ring but oddly enough, Sally reckons her days in management are over, mainly because she doesn't feel like she's up for being a trainee anything. Maddie beckons her over and tells her that Sophie needs to talk to her and it's important. Maddie doesn't tell her what it is but urges her to come.

Steph is looking forward to a girly night with Katy but it turns out a college is having an open night tonight and Katy is going to be standing up Steph. Steve comes wandering in. The girls take the mick but Katy asks how he manages to keep things together with two businesses, a child and a relationship. How does he do it? "Badly" he mutters. He orders a cocktail.

Sally has had the bad news. She is tearful and upset. Maddie reckons Sally needs to go round there and sort them out but Sophie is sympathetic and doesn't know it's true for sure. Sally seems to think it all adds up. She's really upset, thinking she's going to have to go through that betrayal and pain all over again.

Michael and Gail are perusing a very flash sounding menu at the wine bar (it's far too posh for a pub). Michael spots the barmaid he spoke to the other week and calls her over. The manager he wanted to speak to about Gavin isn't in yet and she offers them a mulled wine? Michael, taking his cue from Gail's warning look, orders a non-alcoholic lager but Gail turns around and simpers, she'll have the mulled wine, thanks!

Alya has arrived and is chatting to Carla. Alya gives all the right answers to Carla's questions, assuring her she can even be tough when she wants to be. The "rabble" won't run circles around her. Carla looks at Alya's design portfolio as they talk.

Sophie suggests that Sally confront Tim when he gets home but she knows Tim can lie like a rug. She then gets angry. No, she's not having it. She charges out the door and heads next door where Anna and Tim have their heads together over a newspaper. He works out the words slowly with her encouraging him. Sally bursts through the door and the name calling begins. Tim tries to tell her it's not what it looks but of course they all say that, right? Sally calls Anna a cow and a slut. Anna says they'll have to tell her and she goes out the door wailing.

Part 2

Outside, Sally's steaming on the pavement. Tim comes running outside and follows her down to their house where Sally and Sophie come out and draw Sally in. Sally tells Tim to go away and he doesn't persist.

Michelle is on the phone to Len who is telling her he's added more people to the guest list. Eileen lifts her head over her phone and tells them that Lloyd has just told her that Steve hasn't turned up for his shift. Liz picks up her phone to call him (which Lloyd has probably already done), worried something might have happened. Eileen complains that Steve is either skiving or something's wrong with him. She wonders if he's having an affair. Eileen points out he's got form. Liz doesn't think he is. Michelle comes back into the bar to the news that Steve has gone AWOL.

Leanne and Kal are now in the Bistro having a drink (they were in the pub with Zeedan and Alya earlier). Steve is still at the bar there. Kal is waiting to hear how Alya got on. Alya is still in Carla's office showing her designs but the ones she's got are very expensive, pure silk and worth every penny. You don't want nasty polyester. Carla pulls out a pair of polyester pants and points out that most clients would want those pretty knickers at a cost of 12 for a tenner. Polyester is the basis for her business (I guess after that run in with Rob over the stolen silk, she gave it up as a lost cause?) Alya realizes she's put her foot firmly in it and it looks like that was enough to put Carla off Alya.

Faye greets Craig who has come back from the museum in a jolly mood. But he can see something's on her mind and sits down with her and asks if she's ok. She brushes it off, saying she's just got one of those faces. Craig agrees that the outside of him doesn't match the inside either. What a star! He offers to buy her some chips. She admits they have to move into the bookie flat and though she's pretended she's excited, she is feeling down about leaving her house.

Sally is crying in the kitchen with the girls trying to support her. Sally recalls all the times boys and men have two timed her. She says Tim hasn't denied it (but she didn't give him the chance). Tim shouts through the letter box to let him explain but Sally's ran upstairs to arm herself with the bog brush.

In the wine bar, Gail is getting squiffy on mulled wine. The manager comes in and the barmaid points them out to her. She comes over to find out what they want to know about Gavin. She admits to being Gavin's ex. Michael explains that he is Gavin's father but they've lost touch and he wants to get in touch again. She agrees to give Michael his address.

Tim is waiting outside. Anna joins him but, spying Anna, calls her slutty and then throws Tim's belongings out of the window. Sophie and Maddie are appalled. Tim professes his love and tells her he's not playing away. Sally bans him from the house forever. But before she can throw something harder down at him he admits he's learning to read. Liar!!! But Tim perseveres. He wouldn't show himself up in front of the neighbours like this if it wasn't true. That makes Sally stop for a minute. He admits he can't read and Anna's been helping.

After the break, Alya is sulking on the stops of the gym. Zeedan comes out and hears that she blew it. He tells her that there will be something better come along.

Tim is now inside. Sally comes downstairs and Maddie confirms that she knew he couldn't read. Sophie and Maddie leave them to talk. She apologizes for throwing his clothes out. He says he fooled around in school. He found it hard and he was lazy. He says he has ways of getting by so nobody notices. He feels bad he's let Faye down. Sally is hurt that he couldn't tell her but he says he didn't want her to be ashamed of him. Ouch.

Alya and Zeedan come to the Bistro and bring the bad news. Steph has found out that Nick isn't coming in so she has to stay and continue being responsible. Steve sympathises and offers to help behind the bar.

Sally wonders if he thinks she's small minded and remembers how Sophie was afraid to tell her that she was gay. Tim admits he was a bit afraid if he told Sally early on she'd have dumped him and there isn't a right time to break that kind of news. She hugs him. It's going to be ok.

Steve is enjoying himself serving cocktails. His phone rings and he doesn't take the call from his mother. Kal offers to have a word with Carla. No thank you.

Outside, the Nazirs come out of the restaurant and Kal takes it on himself to tell Carla that Alya feels terrible about blowing the interview and assures Carla that Alya would be a good choice for the job. Carla smiles and brushes it off. Alya is mortified.

Gail, by now, is well into her cups. The manager has told Michael that Gavin has been a bit of an opportunist and selfish but also charming and he's a good cocktail maker. Michael thanks her for chatting to them. Gail has apparently been bragging Nick's restaurant and lies that her other son owns a hair salon.

Faye is helping Anna pack dishes. Owen pops in and says it's all kicking off next door. Anna mouths "she found out" but Faye catches it and insists on knowing what's going on. Anna reckons it'll be all over the neighbourhood and tells her that Tim has been struggling with his reading and writing. She takes it nonchalantly. Anna quickly fills in Owen as Faye lets Tim and Sally in the door. Sally apologizes to Anna who is sarcastically gracious. Tim also apologizes to Faye and we find out that he had a mate help him when Faye first got in touch via the internet. She figures he's quite clever to have kept that secret for so long. Sally asks if Anna will forgive her but I'm not so sure Anna's ready. "Anna 'Slutty' Windass will have to get back to you on that one" she tosses back, using Sally's earlier insult.

Maddie and Sophie are in the pub. Maddie says that Tim made her swear not to tell anyone about his problem just as Sally had told Sophie not to tell anyone she suspected Anna and Tim's affair. Michelle takes yet another text from Len. Carla comes in and sympathises, asks for a glass of red and offers to listen. Michelle complains that Steve is always going AWOL. Liz tells Michelle that they're running out of change and that her shoes are not made for walking. Michelle sighs.

At the bistro, Steph is saying goodbye to some customers and then tells Steve to go home and thanks for helping. He gets her to try a cocktail he came up with just as Michelle comes to the door and sees them through the window laughing. She comes in, giving him a hurt and confused look. Steph sees that there's quite an atmosphere and backs out of the room again. Michelle ask him about the missed Streetcars shift. He doesn't comment. She says she was worried about him and whirls around and leaves. Steph comes back out, wondering if everything is ok. He doesn't answer. Michelle is outside crying. I guess it's not all right.

Tvor

Wednesday 19 November

Steve's out the back of the pub, smoking and looking miserable.

Inside, Michelle, Liz and Tony are at the breakfast table and talking about Steve and how he was making cocktails at the bistro. Steve comes in and stands in the hall for a moment, listening to them, and biting his nails. He then walks into the room and tells them he fancied a change, he was getting a few tips because he thought maybe they could do cocktails at the Rovers. Liz points out that someone (meaning Michelle) was upset, and Michelle looks tearful. "Sorry," mutters Steve. Michelle tells him not to worry about it, as Liz and Tony tactfully depart. Michelle then tells Steve she's got more important things to worry about, she's got a party to organise. He offers to help, and she brightens up considerably. He asks what time they have to be there and promises to take her and help throughout.

Gail struggles downstairs with a banging headache. Michael sees this as a good excuse to cancel going to see Gavin, but Gail insists that he goes. David and Kylie bicker over who is doing the school run.

Steve turns up at the taxi office with coffee. Lloyd says he thought he'd left the country. Lloyd then asks where Steve was yesterday, and Steve mutters something about a personal crisis. Just then Steph comes in to check he's ok after last night. Then they start talking about cocktails, much to Lloyd's initial bewilderment, which then turns to annoyance, as it becomes clear that Steve has been in the bistro and they'd been short staffed on the taxis.

Dev confides to Mary that he's been invited to a 50th birthday party on Friday. He's dreading it because he'll be on his own and everyone else will be couples. She offers, somewhat hopefully, to accompany him, telling him she's free on Friday, but he tells her that's beyond the call of duty, no, he'll just go alone and slope off home early. Then he asks as she's free on Friday will she babysit? She fixes on a smile and agrees, but when he's gone out of the door she looks very upset. Poor Mary.

Outside, Dev sees Julie coming out of the shop and goes over to talk to her. He hasn't seen her for ages, has she been avoiding him? She admits that she has, but today decided to stop avoiding him. He's glad to hear it, they're mates and he'd hate to lose that. He asks if she'll go for a drink one night with him, and she agrees.

Steve is moaning to Lloyd that the driver who stood in for him yesterday has left the cab in a terrible mess, there's chilli sauce all over the steering wheel.

Tim doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get to work and tells Sally there's no rush, it might rain anyway. She remarks that he has more time off for rain than a cricketer. He says how he used to skive off school and go to Old Trafford. "So you've been sneaking off avoiding your problems all your life, have you?" she asks, pointedly. He wanders over to her and quietly says he's sorry he didn't tell her, it was a horrible thing to have to admit. She tells him that now it's come out he can face it, people won't think any less of him.

Katy and Alya are working at the gym. Katy is talking about her paramedics course, she's really serious about it. "Until a fit bloke comes along," jokes Alya. Katy assures her she's off men, she wants to do something with her life.

Carla comes rushing in for her fitness session with Kal, and asks Alya to call in to the office later for a chat.

Steve is at the garage talking to Kevin, who shows him a classic open topped kit car that's come in. Steve falls in love with it, although Steph is passing and remarks that it looks like a go-kart. Kevin tells Steve that the owner is selling it, and Steve wonders out loud how much it is. "I'm open to offers," says a voice. The owner is standing behind them.

Gail, and a very reluctant Michael, are standing on the door step of a block of flats, and Michael is dithering over whether to press the bell to Gavin's flat. In the end Gail presses it for him.

The doorbell hasn't been answered, Michael wants to rush off, but Gail tells him to leave a note and produces paper and a pen. Michael doesn't know what to write. Gail urges him to just put down and couple of lines and leave a phone number, then Gavin has a choice. Michael says this is worse than when he wrote to her. "And look where that led," grins Gail.

Back at the garage, Steve and the kit car owner are haggling over the price. I use the term loosely, the car owner takes the price up instead of down. "I don't want to haggle," he says, "we're not in Marrakesh." Steve goes to asks Kevin's advice, and Kevin warns him it could be a money pit, he's only changed the headlights, he's not looked under the bonnet. Just then Michelle walks past and Steve asks what she thinks. She looks at the car and laughs. "It looks like something that fell out of the cornflake packet," she says, and then tells him that they have to be at the party earlier than she thought, so could be please be home for 4.30? As she walks off, Steve clinches the deal with the car owner and they shake on it. Lloyd comes out of the taxi office and Steve shows him what he's just bought. "Not for the business?" queries Lloyd. "No, for me, for fun," says Steve. Lloyd wants to know if Michelle knows. Steve admits that she doesn't, but is sure she'll love it. Lloyd isn't so sure, he thinks Steve will be dead meat!

Michelle is over in Carla's office, collecting a load of straw hats that Carla has put gingham fabric around. She asks how things are with Steve, and Michelle says that today is a better day, he's going to help her. As Michelle leaves, Alya arrives and Carla tells her she's got the job.

Steve gets into his new purchase - 'Lightening' - starts the engine and roars off up the Street, alarming Norris who is outside the Kabin. "Steady!" shouts Norris. Steve stops at the kerbside as Steph is walking along. (Does that girl do anything other than walk up and down the Street when she's not in the Bistro?) She wants to know if Michelle knows. Steve again admits that she doesn't. "But she'll love it!" He tells her to get in, they'll go for a spin. She runs across the cobbles and jumps in.

An excited Alya goes back to the gym and tells them all that she got the job. Kal is really proud and offers to take them all out for dinner to celebrate.

Sally arrives home to find Tim just back from cleaning windows. He was pleased to find that nobody stared at him or said anything. Just then there's a knock on the door. It's Faye offering to help teach him to read.

Dev gets home to find a rather frosty Mary. "Is everything all right?" he asks. "Yes," she snaps, but then after a pause, she launches into a tirade telling him that she was trying to help save him from feeling like a gooseberry at his posh do, and she didn't know why he should think it so preposterous. "All right then," he shouts, "I'll be happy to take you along!"

Tim is watching tv when Sally comes downstairs armed with books and magazines. She turns off the set and tells him to come and sit down at the table, she's going to help him to read. "Do I have to?" he moans, and she tells him he does, she's looked it all up on the internet and she's got loads of ideas. "Thank you Sal," he mutters. "Miss Webster to you!" she says. "Oooh, I quite like that," he says, getting out of his chair.

In the Rovers, it's getting late and Steve hasn't turned up to take Michelle to the party. Tony says that he can take her. Michelle tells him Steve was supposed to be staying to help her.

Kal and family, along with Leanne are in the pub having pre-dinner drinks. Leanne sees Alya with her phone and says she knows who she's texting. She tells Alya she's in a very awkward position, and Alya says she will tell her dad about Gary, only not tonight, they're celebrating.

Gail and Michael are getting dinner ready when Michael's phone rings. It's Gavin.

David and Kylie are watching tv. He then goes off for a bath when Kylie's phone bleeps with a message from Callum saying he'll see her tomorrow.

Michelle and Tony are just setting off for the party when Steve roars up the Street in his new car with Steph at his side. They stop outside the Bistro, and Steph gets out laughing. Michelle is flabbergasted and comes striding over. "You were supposed to pick me up an hour ago," she snaps. Steve says he forgot. "Forgot I existed?" snaps Michelle. "Where have you been? And why are you in that stupid car with Steph?" Steve says he wanted to see how she handled - the car, not Steph. Michelle isn't at all happy however, (and who could blame her?) and is even more annoyed when Steve tells her he's bought the car for him and her. She has to go, and Steve says he'll come with her, but she tells him he won't, she doesn't want him anywhere near her. She's had enough!

Friday 21 November

Hi there. I am writing this while it is pouring with rain outside - however by the time you read this it maybe hot sun or snowing. Somebody once told me that if you don't like the weather in the UK ... wait half an hour !!! At least we don't have the extreme weather that is happening over in the USA at the moment.

Right so we start off this episode with breakfast in the back room of The Rovers. Seated around the table are Liz, Tony and Michelle. They are complaining about the car that Steve bought. They consider him thoughtless and selfish. Liz considers what Michelle and Steve need is a holiday. Tony says he has a friend that has a Guest House in The Lakes which they could stay at.

Norris is cleaning the windows outside The Kabin (obviously given up waiting for Tim, from last week!). He says a parcel delivery van turn up and the driver goes over to Kylie. He rushes over and says that the parcel is his, and that there is a mistake. Kylie insists it is for her as it has her name and address on it. Meanwhile behind Norris, the 'real' delivery driver pulls up outside Norris' door. Finds he is not in and goes away again !

Back at The Rovers, Steve comes downstairs, looking worse for wear. Tony goes over and tells him that he has missed breakfast. He tells Steve that Michelle is in a bad mood and that puts Liz in a bad mood which in turn puts him a bad mood (Cue - 'Bad Mood Rising' Creedence Clearwater Revival ...sorry!).

At the Platts, Michael, Audrey and Gail are chatting. Michael says that he wants to see his son, but is very nervous.

Back on the Street, Steve shows Lloyd and Andrea his new car. He says that he feels good about it. Lloyd, however suggests he grovels to Michelle about it.

Michelle tells Steve that she has booked a weekend break at the Guest House. Lloyd and Andrea are annoyed that he messes around and then gets a holiday break.

In the Salon, Mary is having her hair done by David, in preparation of her date with Dev. Kylie receives a phone call and dashes out saying she has to go to a client.

Lloyd wants Steve to do a job, but he is busy cleaning his car. Lloyd is very annoyed. Steve says that it will be 'normal service' next week after the break.

The Windass/Armstrong clan are in The Rovers. They are clearing out the house. Owen says he won't miss the gardening, weeding etc.

Andrea buys Michelle a drink. Andrea tells Michelle that she considers that she handled Steve very well. She would have given him a slap!

Liz sees Steve and he tells her that he and Michelle are going away. She warns him to pay more attention to Michelle else he will lose her.

Kylie meets up with Callum. She tells him that she needs more of the drugs He says he cannot take any money from her as the mother of his child.

Back in The Rovers, Steve is packing a bag for his trip.

The Windass/Armstrong clan go and look at Peter's flat. They are deciding where things will go. Faye, in particular loves it. She thinks of it more as an apartment rather than a flat !

Emily goes to the Kabin with a delivery card for Norris. He is extremely annoyed that he has missed the delivery again. (Why doesn't he have it re-delivered to the Kabin?!). He asks Emily when it came, she tells him it was on the mat when she came in. Norris rings up the delivery company and tells them to hold it and he will come to their depot and collect it personally.

Dev is walking along the street and passes Mary's caravan (funny we don't normally see it there!). She calls for Dev to come in. She is wearing dark glasses. She explains that she decided to put on false eyelashes, but has had an allergic reaction to the glue. Her eyes are all red and sore. She says there is no way she can possibly go out like that.

Michelle comes home and there is no sign of Steve. Liz and Tony are in but they don't know where he is either.

In the bistro Gail and Michael are waiting for his son.

Michelle goes into the street to find Steve sitting in his car. He explains that he has just cleaned it. Michelle is angry and kicks the car.

Back in the bistro, Dev comes in and sees Julie. He talks about going out that evening and that he will be the only bloke on his own. Steph overhears the conversation and suggests to Julie that she may like to go along (is it Steph's invite to make?!). Dev, however says he would be very pleased to take her along. He says when he walks in with her on his arm, he will be the proudest and happiest man in Manchester.

A 'stranger' walks into the Bistro. (As everybody knows everybody else who comes in - it must be Gavin).

In the car, Michelle and Steve are having a talk. Michelle says she still loves him despite him buying stupid cars. She wonders if he is trying to tell her something. Steve says he is going through a bad patch. She says she doesn't understand, she doesn't really understand him anymore. She says it feels like he wants to get away from her. She asks him to say something - give her one good reason why she shouldn't just walk away. Steve just sighs.

So will Steve and Michelle battle through? How will Gavin get on with his newly-found father? Will Julie be the 'belle of the ball' ?! Richard has been watching part 2 for you.

A visit to the Travel Nurse this week to bring my jabs up to date before my pending foreign excursion. However they tell me the prevention is better than the actual disease! Have to hope that the destinations make it worthwhile. Anyway let us hope that I do not return to find the house and been entered illegally in our absence.

This episode was written by Perrie Balthazar, with Lee Salisbury in the director's chair. The copyright remains the property of ITV Studios to whom many thanks for their continuing entertainment.

We open with Steve and Michelle sat in the Dutton (the sports kit car he has bought) outside Nick's Bistro with her saying that this is where you fight for US if you want to - but Steve stares fixedly ahead. Michelle looks at him with concern and asks if he wants to fight for them to continue? He sighs and she says exasperatedly that if he does not say something this minute, she is leaving this car and him. Heavy sighing again from Steve. He manages the word "Michelle" but cannot work out what to say to follow it up - but he is struck mute. So she climbs out of the car and storms back down the Street to the Rovers where Andrea asks what has happened and Liz follows suit once she has told Andrea off. Steve is what happened says Michelle - finished. And if they want to know why they should ask Steve as they might get more out of him than she managed. And she storms crying through into the back room. Liz follows to see if she is alright.

In the bistro, Stephanie ties to guess what Gavin is going to drink. [My wife later announced that Gavin is clearly gay]. He orders a lager. The table is somewhat difficult for the discussion between Michael and Gavin. Michael offers his hand and they shake and the temperature moves away from frozen.

Liz is lost for words - Michelle says that Steve said nothing and it makes no sense - he just stared out of the window and he only showed any emotion when she tried to smash it up. Liz proves it is a storm in a teacup because they have not even had a row. Michelle says that is the problem. Normally they row like other couples discuss the tea menu - so she is sure it is over. Liz shakes her head and says it is about Steve being all over the place and Michelle says it is because he does not want her any more.

Gail sensing the difficulties offers to leave but both Michael and Gavin have something to agree on and ask her to stay. Steph returns with the bottle of "Italian" lager, which is odd because it says on the bottle it was brewed in Kettering and (given she is from the North I am surprised she does not know this) she asks where is "Kettering" - in fact she says it sounds more like a criminal offence than a place (it is 'oop North as we southerners say) and she is clearly trying to chat him up. Michael shouts at her and then immediately apologises. Michael is starting to think this was a bad idea. Gail thinks Gavin must be curious. Michael asks if he has had a good life - but finds it difficult to find the right words. Gavin says explaining 20 years in ten minutes is not possible - but then says he is prepared to hear the story properly from Michael.

Rita and Norris are at the parcels office. He provides the documentation required - but the clerk cannot provide the parcel because he is a day too early as it is still out on the van. He needs to come back tomorrow. Norris will be there at 9:45 the following morning.

Dev and Julie are arriving at the swanky hotel for the party and as she heads off to the little girl's room Dominic greets Dev who notes that Julie is attractive. Dev tells Dom about Julie being a stand in at the last moment for his original date. She returns and they all get something fizzy. Dom starts flirting with Julie as he thinks Dev has a girlfriend

Steve returns to the Rovers where Liz wants to know what he is playing at. Why has he not given Michelle an explanation. Liz tells him to go and sort it out. He drifts into the back room - but all he can say is that he is sorry and "good luck". "Bye Michelle". She cannot believe her ears and it is time for an emotional break.

In the second half we open in the Bistro with Gavin buying another round of drinks. Again the two men get a little at cross purposes - Gavin is not sure he can forgive - but he needs time and then says he has got to go. He departs very uncertainly.

In a sad moment the Windass & Armstrong families are clearing out of their house. Anna had wanted the house so much (remember when they arrived - very different to now) and they have to let it go. The others leave with the last boxes allowing for a tender moment of memory between Gary and Anna. She sets to some final cleaning. She laughs and cries remembering the good and bad times.

Both Julie and Dom are flirting - it appears they both like gin and tonics. Dom suggests the four of them go out - the three who are there and Dev's mystery new girlfriend. Julie is put out not realising that she is a last minute substitute and gives Dev an evil look! She takes Dom by the arm and they walk into dinner together leaving Dev behind. Dev has fall into a pit.

In the Rovers Steve is trying to divert attention by buying a round of drinks - but Liz wants to know what is going on. Steve says it is just one of those things and leaves the bar.

In her rather nice new flat Carla is doing her toenails when the bell goes and it is inevitably Michelle arriving as she has nowhere else to go. Carla pours her a huge red wine as she comes up the stairs. Michelle is crying her eyes out and wants to stay. Carla cuddles her.

In what has until recently been Peter's flat the Windass and Armstrong families are hard at work. Less Izzy who would have trouble with the stairs of course. Anyway Gary reckons the sofa is better to sleep on than the bed at the old place. In true fashion after moving they are sharing a takeaway. Gary gets a text from Alya.

At the Platt residence David, Kylie and Nick are sharing dinner when Kylie gets a text presumably, presumably from Callum. Michael and Gail return and they are looking a little glum. Gail remains positive that things will go well. Max did a drawing of them earlier but it was destroyed when Kylie said it made Gail look like a Jabberwocky ("Beware the Jabberwocky" says Nick). Michael's phone goes off and it is a text from Gavin suggesting another meeting tomorrow. So not all is lost yet.

Dev is trying to explain events - but Julie is giving no quarter and she has been taken in by Dom's apparent charm although Dev seems not to think highly of him. Julie gives him both barrels, in fact she flays him with machine gun fire before he admits that it was Mary who dropped out. Dom is getting up to leave. It turns out that he is a) fairly wealthy and b) a lawyer who does a lot of court appointed and pro bono work to balance his conscience. Julie is quite taken by Dev bigging up Dom - calling him truly awe-inspiring and she gives him her number as he is so well recommended.

Michelle cries on Carla's shoulder - how could she not see it coming? Perhaps she got lazy and had ignored the signs. Carla points out that he did not say it was over (the line Liz used earlier) and possibly Michelle is putting words into his mouth. Once again she reports that Steve just said nothing. Michelle wishes there were another woman but she knows there is just here. Michelle admits she nags him, tells him to lose weight, tells him to change his shirt, clean the bath out after him, but she does love him. She looked into his eyes but there was nothing there. The way he used to look at her - it's gone. And she thought that would always be there. Took it for granted and it is no wonder that he has fallen out of love with her. Carla re-assures her that it is all going to be well.

The Rovers is closed but Lloyd returns to talk about it. Lloyd reminds him about the discussions over Becky and the time the threatened to throttle Tracy - they have always talked about relationships - and suddenly Steve does not want to talk. And the stuff with Andrea and Neil. Lloyd says that Steve tried before and he cannot believe what has happened. Steve says he cannot believe it either - Michelle threatened to wreck the car despite knowing what it cost. Lloyd is incredulous - he is not talking about the Dutton. Lloyd is talking about Michelle his beautiful gobby girlfriend. The wonderful step mother to Amy. She walked out and Steve did not even bat an eyelid. Steve says that is not true - but we all saw it. Lloyd says it is not too late - but he does have to start talking. Steve says nothing. Party is over and he tells Lloyd to leave. Steve says goodnight and Lloyd departs. Steve locks the door and walks back behind the bar. He looks around. Sighs heavily again and turns out the lights and credits roll.

During this episode my wife expressed a strong opinion that she no longer believed in Steve and his lack of acting. As regular readers will know I have been extremely convinced on his performance so far but tonight his complete inability to say anything lacked something - I admit to suffering depression but never on the scale perhaps which Steve is experiencing and I am therefore unable to comment on what is right. Those with more knowledge than I may feel able to say more. The story has some time to run yet and I hope that she will be giving me less earache in the future.

Any lessons this week?
If meeting a long disconnected son then try and think through what you might say before hand.
If you are pregnant try and avoid shots showing bumps (Kylie you know who I mean)
And if you are Dev do not be a pompous prick and tell Julie that Mary has dropped out before you tell someone else.
And if you are called Julie do not fall for the sweet talking lawyer as he will only hurt you.

I will no doubt be back next week.

Monday 24 November

Written by Jonathan Harvey Directed by Audrey Cooke

Steve can't face the day. Liz shouts him awake and opens the curtains, reminding him he's got to take Amy to school. He looks dreadful and sighs.

Ew, Gail has a green plastic container full of wiggly maggoty things. Michael is going fishing with Gavin, apparently, but Michael isn't a fisherman so it might not be that successful. He's even printed off a how-to list for things dads should do with their sons. That's a bit sad, innit? He didn't have his own dad to do things with and didn't have his son either. Gail is supportive. David is a bit skeptical and sarcastic. Michael dons a fishing had and admits he's nervous. She wonders if he's going to tell Gavin about his heart condition. He says he will.

Rita, Emily and Mary are sighing over a conversation about gorgeous movie star leading men from the 50s such as Paul Newman and Omar Sharif. Just as they wonder why a handsome man doesn't walk through the Kabin door, it opens and in comes Gavin and let's face it, he's a bit of all right, isn't he? And he poured on the charm with the ladies as well. Michael comes in and introduces them to his son. They're surprised. Mary reckons they have the same earlobes. Michael buys the sweets for Gavin but in the course of the conversation, Mary lets slip something about "breaking and entering". Rita changes the subject rapidly.

Amy brings Steve a smoothie she's made for him to make him feel better. He tastes it, it seems a bit sour maybe but he, of course, acts like it's ambrosia and hugs her. She reckons he's not really poorly, but is just missing Michelle, just like her.

Carla asks to speak to Tracy about the money she owes Michelle. Tracy, as predicted, gives her a mouthful even when Carla offers to help. Tony's walking by just then and hears a bit of it, I think. Tracy unlocks the shop and enters.

Sophie asks Dev how the party was. Dev is low key about it. Julie comes in and she's in a top mood. Dev thanks her for going to the party with him. Julie tells Sophie that she met a nice man at the party and they exchanged numbers and there's a possibility of a date later in the week. She leaves with her milk and Sophie asks about the man. Dev says he's an idiot. Green eyed monster, maybe?

Rita is describing an old movie or tv show to the ladies, trying to figure out what it was called. Norris comes in looking flummoxed. He still hasn't got his parcel! He took Emily's passport for Id instead of his own and of course, that was not accepted. Sadly, we didn't get another scene with the excellent Mo Grieves. Norris can't find his own passport (ahem. won't any other picture ID work? Driving license? WARTS membership?) He looks like he's going to cry! He accuses Emily or Mary of hiding his passport. Of course not! Rita had been in the back rummaging and guess what? She comes out with Norris' passport! He'd put it in the safe because he was paranoid about identity theft. He leaves without thanking her as they all mutter about people having no manners.

Steve is back from taking Amy to school. He's sat on the back stairs as Liz is on a rant about a teaching assistant at the school with a controlling attitude. Steve just mutters and harumphs little noises so she thinks he's paying attention. She reminds Steve that Amy gets off school early later.

Gavin is at the house. The sweets he bought (Michael did, actually) were for Gail. David continues a running commentary, David-style while Gail simpers and witters with Gavin, very Gail-like. Gavin invites Gail but Michael says he thought it would be a nice bonding hour or so. David brings up the Dad List, embarrassing Michael and giving Gail conniptions.

In the pub, Tony's dancing behind the bar to Superstitious while Liz is reapplying her lippy. He's in a good mood, and he thinks it's going to be a good day. He tells her that Tracy's in financial bother and he wants to get his hands on the shop. He can make a success of it. Liz insists Tracy's dodgey and he ought to avoid her.

Steve is on the phone making an appointment with the doctor and is fidgeting, telling the receptionist it's an emergency.

On the way along the canal, Gavin asks Michael about the comment about breaking and entering. They find a place to set up. Michael admits he was broke at the time.

Steve slowly approaches the medical centre. Down the road, Dev is unloading the car after a trip to the cash and carry. Mary comes along and asks how the party was and apologizes for not being able to go. She's initially taken aback when she finds out Dev went with Julie but is ecstatic when Sophie relates that Julie found a fella and they're arranging a date! She goes running off and Dev snaps at Sophie who picks up on Dev's demeanor. She wonders if he likes Julie and if he does, he needs to tell her.

Tony comes to Barlows Buys, telling Tracy he's come to cheer her up. He overheard Carla's offer but wants Tracy to come to him if she needs money. Tracy won't come near him with a barge pole and is going to keep her nose clean. She throws Tony out with a flea in his ear but he continues to assure her she can come to him.

Steve comes into the doctor's office. It's a different doctor this time and Steve seems uncomfortable. He's fidgety and can't sit down. He's breathing hard and finally sits. He seems out of breath, is sweaty and says he thinks he's going mad. She knows he's having a panic attack and tells him to take a deep breath. She breathes with him a few times and explains what a panic attack is. He seems a little calmer.

At the canal side, Michael has told Gavin the story and now tells him that Gail sold her house to David. Gavin immediately assumes Gail has a tidy sum tucked away but Michael tries to tell him they don't discuss financial matters so he really doesn't know. Gavin apologizes for being nosy.

Norris finally has his parcel and brings it into the Kabin to open it. The parcel has a lot of redirection stickers over it so it's been around to more than a few destinations trying to find Norris. They unpack it and find a telescope in a wooden box. Rita points out a hand written label. It's a note from his late brother Ramsay! Norris realizes Ramsay was trying to make amends and feels bad because he spent most of his life wishing Ramsay didn't exist (But wait, Ramsay died on the plane back to Australia. Did he send this before he even came to England? If so, why didn't he just bring it in the first place? Well, never mind...)

Back to the intrepid fishermen. Michael asks if Gavin remembers anything about him from when he was young, like a fire engine that he'd given him? No? Gavin really only remembers his stepfather who was strict, especially if he was in the pub. He changes the subject, not wanting Michael to feel guilty for abandoning him. Gavin brings the conversation back to Gail.

The doctor is questioning Steve about various symptoms, nearly all of which Steve admits to having. Steve feels worse and worse with every admission. The doctor says he's got depression. Steve gets upset, he doesn't want to be "mad" and just wants something that will make it go away. The doctor says there are options and he should talk to a councilor. He's reluctant and when asked if there's anybody in his family he feels he can talk, he says he could probably talk to his mum.

But will he?

I'm subbing for Karen again this week so it's another update from me, the second of two episodes written by the fab Jonathan Harvey. You always know you're going to get great dialogue with him behind the pen.

Written by Jonathan Harvey Directed by Audrey Cooke

Steve sees Andrea as he comes out of the clinic but all he'll tell her about what's wrong is "men's stuff". She apologizes for prying. Over on the bench, Michael and Gavin have given up on fishing and have got fish and chips from the chippie instead.

Liz is relaxing with a face mask on when the phone rings. She hollers for Tony to get it and Michelle peeks around the door to come and visit. Liz is glad to see her. Michelle acknowledges that something has changed and Steve isn't willing to put it right. Liz tells her that STeve seems more interested in his car. Michelle is still quite upset over it all. She's ready to work. Tony tells them that Steve didn't pick up Amy and he told the school that Liz would go. She squeaks that she can't go with her face mask on! Michelle offers to go instead.

Audrey comes out of the salon and is introduced to Gavin. Gavin is interested to hear Audrey owns the salon. Audrey invites them to the pub for a drink and they consider it. Gavin tells Michael he should consider him just someone he met and asks how he'd get to know someone under those circumstances. Michael explains that putting the world to rights over a few jars usually works. Right then, shall we join the ladies?

The ladies are set up with drinks in the Rovers with David. Gail is pleased that Michael and Gavin seem to be getting on. David keeps throwing his unhelpful comments into the mix until Gail tells him to button it if he can't be civil. Gail wonders how Gavin took the news about the heart condition. David finally goes in disgust and Gail's just as glad to see the back of him because she wants Gavin, when he arrives, to have a good impression of their family.

Steve is sat in his sports car parked somewhere near a busy road. He finally calls home and Liz gives him a load of grief about forgetting to pick up Amy. Steve cringes and hangs up on her.

Gavin and Michael arrive in the pub and join Gail and Audrey. Eva is introduced. Michael buys the drinks in spite of Gavin offering, still trying to make up to him. Gavin admits things went ok today and then confirms a time that he can come and get his hair cut at Audrey's tomorrow.

Dev arranges a babysitting evening with Mary who is more than happy to comply. She makes a few scurrilous remarks about how quickly Julie will hurtle herself into a new relationship just as Julie herself comes in. Mary asks about Dominic and wonders if he's a good kisser. Julie backs off under Mary's barrage of comments and questions, saying they haven't even dated yet and she doesn't seem to need the milk after all. She scoots out and runs for the hills, to Dev's amusement.

Michelle arrives back with Amy but tells her she's not moving back in. Amy goes upstairs to change. Michelle asks Andrea if she's seen Steve but she lies and says she hasn't, even though Liz, Michelle and Tony all say he's been out of touch.

Norris is polishing the telescope in the Kabin and wondering if it was a hobby of Ramsay's. Emily remembers that Norman (Curly) was into astronomy. Nice little touch, harking back like that. Norris decides to investigate the subject as a nod to his late brother and thinks to take the telescope to the Red Rec later.

Gavin is circumspect when the subject of his mother is brought up and he sidesteps it with Michael's help. Mary joins them, curious about the handsome stranger. She witters on about a pet hamster she had and then manages to inveigle Gavin into rubbing her shoulders! Michael tells Eva that Gavin is a cocktail barman. Mary continues to flirt in her usual Mary like fashion, probably making poor Gavin cringe.

Steve can't get the car started! After the break, the recovery truck is backing up to him and Kevin gets out and gets Steve to help him with the bonnet. Steve's phone beeps and we see there's a raft of missed calls.

Gail has determined that Michael hasn't told Gavin about the health issue yet. Gavin returns from the gents' and takes a text message. Audrey pulls Gail out of the pub leaving the two men there, hoping that Michael will take the opportunity to broach the heart issue.

Dev calls on Julie who has her hair in curlers. Dev stutters that he has to tell her something important but he ends up bottling it, mumbling about a 2 for one kebab special on later that week. Did the curlers put him off or would he have lost his nerve anyway.

Lloyd joins Andrea in the pub and he tells them he's just seen Steve.

Tracy is clearing out all of Rob's things. She's deciding what she can sell, what can go to the charity shop and what's for the bin. She needs the money to pay Michelle's bill. Ken isn't so sure it's a good idea but Tracy figures she has no choice.

Kevin is unhooking the car from the breakdown truck when Michelle, Liz and Tony all come over to confront him. He can't even explain where he's been, even to his mother though he does assure them he's not having an affair. Liz shouts at him, Lloyd wants to know what's going on but Liz's tirade, including a guilt trip over Amy just shuts down Steve and he walks away. Andrea tries to get them all to back off but Steve continues down the dark street.

Michael comes home and admits he didn't tell Gavin but promises he will. Gail gives him a hard time and Michael snaps at her for it, telling her to shut up, please. He wants to get to know his son first before he lays that on him and shouts at her to back off. David is impressed. Audrey hands Michael a drink silently.

Steve is back fussing over his car now that everyone has gone. He looks at one of the brochures the doctor has given him. Emily and Rita walk down the road arm in arm talking about Norris and Ramsay. Emily is pragmatic about how things worked out. They meet Craig who offers them a chip and a cheerful word. He spies Norris going past with the telescope and it catches his eye. Norris had been at the Red Rec and got a bit cold. He and Craig discuss the moon and Craig knows lots about it because he uses several astronomy apps. He asks Norris if he's got a tablet. Emily thinks Norris has a headache and Rita realizes things are getting into the realm of technology and that's her cue to exit. She and Emily go off for a sherry, leaving the lads to chat about "Dewberry" tablets (i.e. Blackberry, I suppose). At the other end of the road, Steve meets the doctor who is leaving the clinic for the day. She asks if he talked to his mother and urges him that he should or it will get worse. Steve says things can't get any worse.

Wednesday 26 November

Steve slopes in and sits down at the breakfast table with Tony. There's only the two of there and Tony asks if Steve is seeing a woman. Steve indignantly assures him that he's not. Just then Liz comes in and informs Steve that she's just taken his daughter to school - again. She sits down and tells him he's throwing his life away, and urges him to tell her if there's a problem. Steve can't say anything and gets up to go to work.

Michael is burning scrambled eggs in the kitchen at Gail's house. He tells her he's hopeless, he doesn't know what she sees in him. She tells him she sees a lovely kind, generous man. He thinks he made a right mess of everything with Gavin, he should have told him about the heart condition but it seemed such a huge thing to drop on him.

Norris and Emily are in Tracy's shop. Emily is asking how Tracy is, Norris is looking at the stock and takes a fancy to a tablet, which turns out to have been Rob's. He wants a discount. She tells him to think of the kudos, it belonged to an actual murderer. He sees the attraction and buys it.

Andrea spots Steve walking down the road and runs after him. He tries to avoid her but she runs after him to catch him up. She asks if he's told Michelle yet about his 'problem', and points downwards. He says he hasn't, and warns her not to say anything to Michelle or anyone else for that matter. She walks on, leaving Steve standing on the pavement. "Another fine mess I've got myself into," he mutters.

Michelle goes into the pub to check the rota for when she's working. She tells Liz she's got a couple of flats to go and take a look at. Liz is shocked, it won't come to that, she'll be back in the Rovers soon. She urges Michelle not to rush things, but to give it a bit of time.

Michelle's not so sure, but is glad to see that Steve isn't working later when she is. When she's gone, Liz picks up the rota and makes a few alterations.....

Dev's friend Dom, who took a shine to Julie, comes into the shop. He tells Dev he wants to pick his brains about Julie, he's planning to take her out to the bistro. Dev then starts to tell him all sorts of untruths about Julie - making out she's something of a man eater who is a cat fanatic with nine cats. As a somewhat bemused Dom leaves the shop, Sophie is furious and tells Dev he should be ashamed of himself.

Michael rings Gavin asking if he's all right, he never turned up for his haircut. Gavin tells him he had a burst pipe and his place is now a total mess. (All lies, nothing seems out of place.) Michael offers to go round and help, he's good at plumbing. Gavin hurriedly tells him it's all fixed now, he called a plumber out. Michael then says he'll come round and help mop up the water. Gavin tells him he can handle it, but Michael persists, insisting that it's no trouble. In the end Gavin snaps at him, tells him to leave him alone, and hangs up. Then he sits and looks through a pile of unopened mail - all bills.

In the taxi office, Steve asks Lloyd what he should do about the car. Lloyd however, is unsympathetic, Steve should have been there, working, not gadding about. It's karma. Lloyd then gets serious, he asks Steve why he keeps going awol all the time, he's worried about him. He also wonders why Steve broke up with Michelle. Steve jumps up, saying he can't leave things like this, he's worried about her. "Give her a ring," says Lloyd, but Steve tells him he's talking about his car, not Michelle, and heads off out of the door.

Steve is round at the garage, not happy to hear Tyrone tell him that it could cost a grand, maybe more, to fix his car. After a moment's thought, Steve tells him to go ahead, and to also stick a new engine in it while he's at it. Nothing is too good for his baby.

In the pub, Liz is on the phone to Eva, asking her to swap shifts to the afternoon instead of this evening. "Meddler," says Tony.

Over at a table, Michael tells Gail and Audrey he's sure he's lost Gavin, he pushed him too far. "Only because you care," says Gail, adding that she thinks he needs a bit of space to think things over.

In the shop, Sophie is giving Dev the silent treatment, until he admits that he was wrong and he shouldn't have done it. "What do you want me to do about it?" he asks her. She tells him to ring Dom and tell him he was lying. Sophie is worried that Julie will be sitting there and Dom will not turn up. "Well, with a bit of luck she might not turn up," says Dev. "What are you planning?" asks Sophie, but Dev isn't saying.

Back in the taxi office, Steve is fretting about his car and wondering what he's going to do while it's being fixed. Lloyd says he could try working. Steve thinks there's more to life than work, otherwise what's the point? Lloyd tells him that if they don't work they go bust. Just then Liz comes in and asks Steve to work in the pub this evening. "If I must," he mutters.

In the Kabin, Rita is aghast that Norris has bought the tablet that was Rob's. Emily tells her that Tracy was selling all sorts of things, some of them wedding presents, there was nice toaster there, not that she was interested of course. Just then Craig arrives, he's come to give Norris some instruction on the astronomy app that he can download from the App Store.

Gavin arrives at Gail's to see Michael. He apologises for snapping earlier, and sits down while Gail goes to make tea. Michael asks if he got the water all cleared up, and Gavin says he has, but it has left a terrible mess and the carpet is ruined. "And plumbers charge the earth, don't they?" says Michael. Gavin agrees that they do, and says he's dreading the bill. Michael jumps up and goes over to talk to Gail in the kitchen. He tells her he wants to help Gavin and she suggests they give him a hundred pounds each. Michael goes back and tells Gavin that he wants to help him, brushing aside Gavin's rather weak protestations.

Norris has taken his new tablet into the pub and is enthusing to Emily and Rita about all the things it can do and all the apps that can be downloaded.

Michelle and Liz are behind the bar when Steve comes in. Michelle wants to know what Steve is doing there and Liz tells her that Eva couldn't work so she had to ask Steve to step in. Michelle reminds her that she tried that trick herself once, and it didn't work. "No harm in trying again," smirks Liz.

Gavin is still in the living room with Michael and Gail when David comes home. He asks sarcastically if Gavin is staying for tea - they've killed the fatted calf. Gavin says he has to get back thanks them for everything. Gail says she was pleased to help. When Gavin has gone, David asks what she helped with, and is furious when he hears that they helped him financially. Gail reminds him that Gavin is unemployed. David wonders whether he should quit his job, then he'd get free haircuts and handouts, but Gail tells him not to be childish.

Standing behind the bar in the Rovers, Michelle asks Steve how things are. "All right," he mutters, then asks if she's still living at Carla's. She tells him she is, but went to see a couple of flats earlier. Steve just goes off to get more glasses.

Tracy comes into the pub and tells Emily she's put the toaster to one side for her. Rita glares at her and Emily looks embarrassed. Tracy, glaring at Michelle, says it's a shame she has to sell her wedding presents, but she's being hounded for money.

Norris is in the back yard showing Steve the stars with his tablet. As they gaze upwards Norris says that looking up there makes all worries drop away. Steve murmurs that it makes you realise how short life really is, it's over just like that. He wonders what the point is, he feels it's just a massive waste of time. Norris wanders back in and Michelle comes out. She reminds Steve of a time they used to sit out, looking for shooting stars. He sighs and goes back inside, leaving her outside crying.

Anne Logan

Friday 28 November

Good day folks. Here we go with another exciting episode of your favourite soap, where the Steve and Michelle storyline that Anne ended with has been (presumably, temporarily) 'forgotten' !

Ken comes downstairs as Tracy is sitting at the table putting on her make-up. Ken asks her where she is going. She says she is going to a meeting at the bank and is going to ask for a loan. She says she hopes that the Manager is a man or a lesbian as the only thing going for her these days is her cleavage (as she slightly unzips her top!).

Michael asks Gavin about the roof damage. He said he has had the bill and it was more expensive than he thought it would be. , £400 +. Michael then gives him a cheque for £100 from him and Gail. David, who happens to be standing nearby snarls if he could help out with his electric bill?. Nick rushes in looking for his phone charger. He complains that his staff haven't turned up. He suspects they are hung-over. David then kindly offers Gavin's services to help out !

Julie tells Sophie that she has not been on a date for some years. She says she is very nervous. Dev comes in and Sophie tells him about Julie's feelings. Dev wishes her good luck as she thanks him for introducing them. Dev says she should wait before thanking in case it doesn't work out. He explains that Dominic has just come through a "messy" divorce. He has obviously recovered now that he is going out again.

Gavin arrives at the Bistro. Steph asks him whether he can juggle the cocktails. He says he can't but has other tricks he can do!

Mary is talking to Audrey in the street about her and Dev showing the kids the film 'It's A Wonderful Life'. She is surprised the kids hadn't seen it before. Mary thinks it a nice film at this time of year. Audrey then summaries it and says it is a very depressing film !

Michael then walks by and Audrey says she has heard from Gail that Gavin is working at the Bistro. He says he is a hard worker. Audrey is surprised that Michael hasn't told him about his heart condition. Michael replies that they have only just met up, and doesn't want to worry him about his health.

Dominic and Julie are together in the Bistro. They are making small talk together, and then he produces a cat key ring for her. Dominic said he had a cat once, so Julie asks if that was when he was married. He replies that was the time. Julie goes on about a divorce, and says she was heartbroken recently. He shouldn't worry as he will soon get over it. Dominic replies that he hopes that is right because it was 8 years ago, and they are still on the same pub quiz team together!

Tracy and Todd are having a drink of tea together. Tracy wonders if he has heard from the police. He says they have said they are doing all they can to find the thugs who beat him up and points to his tiny little scar! She tells him that it could be worse, he could be in a wheelchair like Izzy. She suggests that he goes back to work at the shop.

Nick asks Gavin how much tequila did he put in the drinks that he poured. Nick tastes a glass and screws his face up and says it tastes like fire hazard !

Dominic tells Julie that Dev described her as a latter-day Miss Haversham, surrounded by cats. She assures him that she likes cats but could never be an owner. He goes on to say that Dev described her as practically a recluse. Julie looks shocked.

Michael comes in to see Gavin. Gavin explains that he is busy at which point Michael clutches his chest and starts to keel forward. Steph asks if he wants an ambulance, but Michael says it is just a dizzy spell that he gets occasionally. Nick just wants them out of the way so he can continue serving customers. Gavin then walks out of the Bistro.

Dev comes in, looking for his mobile phone. He sees Dominic and Julie and as he goes to leave, Julie chases after him. She asks him why he told the stories about her and Dominic. Dev then explains he was jealous and that he has 'feelings' for her. They embrace as Dominic comes out. He tells them that the next time they want to play games, don't involve him. They continue their embrace outside Dev's shop, and Sophie sees them as she is bringing out some flowers.

Norris explains to Mary that an app on his new tablet means that he can get a review of any film, together with a plot summary and cast list.

Liz explains to Carla and Michelle that Steve is completely wrapped up with his new car. He is over at the garage every 5 minutes.

Over at the Platts, Michael is being looked after by Gail. Audrey comes in and asks what is happening. Gail explains that he had a funny turn at the Bistro. Audrey asks if he remembered to take his pills. He says yes. Gavin asks what the pills were for. Michael apologises and says that he should have explained earlier. that he has a heart condition which causes the dizzy spells.

Back in The Rovers, Michelle and Carla are talking. Michelle is concerned that she has ordered things from suppliers for Tracy's wedding and now they want to be paid. Carla says the bills are her responsibility, but Michelle says we are talking about Tracy Barlow !

Norris orders a top-up drink for himself and Mary. He says that Mary and Rita have been going on all morning reading horoscopes from every magazine in the shop. He says they are a load of poppycock, because they differ from one magazine to another. Carla sees Norris using his tablet and asks where he got it from. He explains it came from Tracy's shop. Carla wonders if it was Rob's.

Tracy is back in the shop and telling Ken that her visit to the bank was not fruitful. She says the woman practically laughed in her face, when she showed her the accounts. She explained her recent problems, that her husband murdered the barmaid and then went on the run ! Carla comes bursting in and demands to know if she is selling Rob's stuff. Carla says it is not Tracy's to sell. Tracy asks who is going to stop her, and then Ken intervenes to calm them both down. Carla refers to Tracy as a heartless bitch. She then offers to buy all of Rob's stuff, if Tracy will name the price. Carla then spots the cuff links and says they were bought for him on his 16th birthday.. Ken says he is sure Tracy will offer a reasonable price, but Tracy says the stuff is not for sale to Carla. She would rather burn the place down than give them to her. Carla threatens Tracy to give them to her within 5 seconds or she would take them herself. She starts counting to 5 and as she gets to 5 she is about to grab Tracy when Todd comes in and pulls her away. He tells her to leave else he will call the police. Tracy thanks Todd. He confirms that he will start on Monday.

Back with the Platts Michael explains he gets a little dizzy sometimes as what happened at the Bistro. He says stress can bring it on. Gail adds that as long as he keeps calm then he will be okay. David says he wasn't under stress at the Bistro. Gavin asks if his condition is life-threatening. Michael explains it is hereditary so it is not just himself he is worried about. Gavin says he needs to clear his head, and walks out. Michael fears he has lost him.

So will Gavin come back? What is Tracy going to do with the rest of Rob's possessions, will Carla try to get them back? Are Dev and Julie now an 'item'? Richard now has the pen .. or should I say the keyboard to continue !

And now off to Weatherfield where events tonight in series 55 episode 233 were written by Damon Rochefort and directed by Audrey Cooke. Copyright remains the property of ITV Studios to whom many thanks.

Events commence this evening at the factory with Carla tapping away when Michelle arrives wondering why there is no ambulance outside Tracy's shop. Carla indicates that she was this close - but as Michelle points out it is only "stuff" which Tracy is selling. Carla is particularly worried about cufflinks she gave him at 16. He did not wear those cufflinks then - but he has been wearing them recently. Michelle recalls that he tried to get off with her at his 16th birthday party - and Carla remarks he tried to get off with the whole estate. (Michelle I bet you look far better now than you did then!).

Dev and Julie are cuddled up on the sofa and they are kissing and Dev admits he was very childish trying to ruin her date. He recalls the mess over Stella and did not want to make another mistake. Julie marginally puts her foot in it - and tells Dev he will have to get used to her faux pas. Dev tells her not to worry and quotes those fateful Louis Armstrong words (please sing along) "We have all the time in the World"; just remember the next car around the corner has a trained marksman and Diana Rigg is no more. Julie realises the time and rushes back to work after one last snog.

Gail and Audrey are discussing Gavin's sudden departure - but Gail is not in the least surprised. Michael comes downstairs and does not feel like the sandwiches which Gail has prepared. Michael is worried he has lost Gavin - and would not be surprised. The women try to re-assure him.

Along on Maxeem's bench "Gavin" is on the phone to someone in deepest, darkest Borneo and the wifi is not up to much. Well onto his answering machine anyway asking that as soon as he gets the message he should phone Gavin. It is urgent. Steph modelling a rather nice red coat wanders up and asks if he is alright. Gavin says yes he is and then admits he isn't really. Steph asks after Michael and Gavin says he is OK. Steph suggests she is happy to listen and perhaps they could have a quick drink as she is on a break. And Gavin eventually accepts and they head for the Rovers.

In the second hand shop (Barlow's Buys) Beth is casing the stock and takes a shine to a pair of cufflinks for Craig so he can look smart on the forthcoming big day. They are of course Rob's. Tracy tells Beth that they were Rob's and Tracy can have them as a wedding present.

In the Rovers Gavin rejects a call from Michael and then sits down with Steph. Mary finds Gavin quite attractive and even Michelle says she would not say no. Mary upbraids saying that her generation only think of "sex, sex, sex" to which Michelle pointedly responds "I wish". BTW I am not sure how old Michelle and Mary actually are supposed to be but both Kym and Patti were born in 1976 (so are both 38) and I would guess that both are not that divorced in age from the characters - so the comment by Mary was, to say the least, a little unfair over generations!

Gavin is complaining that the "family" thing has moved far too quickly and is far too complicated. Steph calls Gail's family a lovely bunch and Gavin should give them a chance. [Reminder - this is a family where one brother tried to kill another; one son pushed his mother downstairs and more recently one son tried to convince his ex-wife he was mentally unstable and getting worse. And the mother takes in an ex-burglar. I think Steph was being generous].

At home Beth is singing Tracy's praises - a little to the surprise of Sinead. Ches reckons getting Kirk to wear a tie on the big day plus glitzy shmutter will be almost impossible. And Sinead says they will have to get one of those fancy shirts without buttons. Beth is starting to rethink her options. Sinead reckons the boys will be hardly recognisable all dressed up in fancy clothes.

Michael is going out to look for Gavin. He is not answering his phone. He will not listen to Gail's entreaties and he to go. He opens the door and finds Gavin standing there.

Across the way Julie knocks on Dev's door and he comes out and smothers her with a huge kiss, not seeing that a few doors down Mary is stood with a bag of shopping and she is astounded by the obvious affection displayed by the newly minted couple.

Be right back after the break.

A few minutes later Dev's children are arguing over watching which DVD to watch when Mary arrives. Mary has plans - they are going to watch "It's a wonderful life" for Christmas. Julie comes downstairs from the bathroom and it seems that Julie and Dev are going out - on a date. Mary points out that Julie went on a date at lunchtime with one of Dev's friends and Julie concurs - but it was at lunchtime and now it is the evening. Dev says it is a long story and Mary is obviously distressed as she thought they were going to watch the film together. Mary denies being upset - she has been asked to babysit and that is what she will do. [She is clearly very upset]. Dev and Julie depart as she simmers.

Gavin is saying that it all a bit of a shock on hearing the news. Michael says he can give Gavin another £100 next week - but he claims he has some casual work over the weekend which will help. Gavin says the news has not really sunk in just yet. Audrey says that she thinks he is taking it very well under the circumstances. Michael calls him brave and kind. There are fishcakes and chips for tea says Gail and Gavin says he will stay. Audrey departs. As she goes she apologises to Gail for her "catty" comments - it is all so difficult to take in. Gail does not seem impressed.

In the Rovers, Emily, Sinead and Beth are looking at the cuff links. Carla comes in and takes one look at the cuff links and asserts that they were not cheap as she bought them Rob, which Beth admits she knew. Beth hopes that Carla does not mind and tells the story of being given them.

In the Bistro Julie is lost in thought. Steph comes over and observes that Julie deserves a loyalty card - twice in one day. And is this a date "date" which Dev is happy to confirm it is. Julie says the earlier date was just casual - a date which did work. Steph says they make a lovely couple. Julie has something on her mind. She points out to Dev how hard Mary had taken the news. Dev squirms - but Julie points out how important he and the children are to Mary. Dev finally realises that Mary has a crush on him - and Julie says obviously - he is a magnificent specimen and Mary is not made of wood [he is, is he? - there was extensive laughter in this house at that point!]. Dev starts thinking about it.

Back in the Rovers Beth and the others have twigged that Tracy gave her the cufflinks to wind up Carla and they all know they have been taken for a ride. Tracy stomps in and asks for a glass of red wine. Tracy in a loud voice then points out the cufflinks to Aunty Emily - in Carla's hearing. Emily notes Carla's discomfort. Carla tells Tracy not to bother they did it all before she came in. And then she turns to Beth and wishes her and Kirk all the happiness in the world (partially to show magnanimity but also to wind up Tracy). She could not think of a better home for the cufflinks than Kirk. Sinead observes he will look like a proper film star wearing them - Tracy interjects which one - Forrest Gump? Carla also thanks Tracy for giving them to a friend rather than someone who simply walks in off the Street. Tracy does not know where to put herself. Carla pulls off a very classy moment and Tracy loses her temper (if looks could kill ...). Beth grabs the cuff links and heads outside after Carla. She catches Carla and says that the cuff links are Rob's and Carla should have them. And then Beth admits that she is rethinking the wedding - Kirk and Beth want a fun big colourful wedding, not a posh one. It is going to be Eighties.

Dev returns home and surprises Mary - he is alone. They are taking it slowly. Then he asks Mary if she is OK with the relationship and Mary is glad they have found each other. Dev struggles with words - but he asks Mary to join him in a small brandy. The film was not finished - they watched Transformers instead. Dev has also brought her a box of chocolates. He wants to say thank you. He continues - he has never told anyone but one of his greatest fears following Sunita's death is that the children would lose out on a positive kind female presence in their lives. But he does not worry about that because of Mary - and he hopes that she will continue to be a part of all of their lives as long as she wishes. Whoever he is going out with Mary's relationship with the children and his is very important. And if she has the time perhaps they can watch "Its a Wonderful Life" and be reminded of life's blessings. And watching it again has brought tears to my eyes again. Beautiful little speech - put across at the right level and Mary's face is one of absolute glee - because as we know looking after the children has also become very important to her as well. Corrie can do these little bits so well. They clink glasses.

Gavin thanks Gail for her plain and simple food. Michael reckons they have that in common. Gavin heads off back to his flat - and he does need to make a doctor's appointment. Michael sees him out - he cannot believe that his son is back in his life. Gail calls him a good lad.

Outside Gavin is back on the mobile as he walks past the Kabin. He has someone on the other end of the phone - but it is not the person he is trying to contact. It is really important that he leaves a message for him. The message is to be given as soon as Gavin Rodwell gets in touch with the unseen person. The message for Gavin Rodwell is urgent and concerns his father.

So the person we think is Gavin (and whom we also know to be a liar) is not and the real Gavin is in deepest darkest Borneo or somewhere equally hard to reach.

And that is that for this week.

Richard
