2013

Monday 2 December

It's the day before the wedding and Carla is immensely stressed. Peter's mind is still on Simon who is attempting to go back to school but who is as scared and nervy as a cat on a hot tin roof, poor lad. He decides he doesn't want to be his dad's best man at the wedding because everyone will be looking at him. Carla's questioning Peter's commitment and isn't too happy with his non-participation in the planning but he temporarily mollifies her and soothes things. That is, until he takes a call from the representative of the wedding band who have broken up, dumped the gig and spent the deposit. Carla goes mental and orders Peter to sort it because she's done everything else and she will NOT have silence at her wedding!

Peter decides to ask Steve to be his best man and though he's reluctant, Steve agrees. Peter immediately tries to get Steve to sort the music but he wants nothing to do with it, especially after Peter had promised him a no-strings Best Man gig. Liz is watching and learning, giving Tina a piece of her mind behind the scenes. Tina maintains there's nothing going on with Peter but Liz can see that train wreck coming at full speed. Indeed, Tina takes the opportunity to go to the factory, using Simon's well being as an excuse, and tells Peter that Liz's radar is up though they both agree there's no reason for it. Peter's also fanning the flames with Rob by keeping up a running insult in the pub. Even though Rob attempts to make peace by offering his hand in a truce, Peter refuses to budge, rather churlishly.

Across the road, we may be in for a resurrection of the traditional Corrie window cleaner. Since Jason hasn't been getting much work, Tim is at a loose end. Sally does that thing Sally always does by trying to push him to bigger and better things, or at least get a job. She asks him to clean her windows since he's got time on his hands. Emily sees him do it and says hers hadn't been done since Graeme left. I seriously doubt that but even so, he agrees to do it for the bargain price of 7 quid. Steve notices him doing Mrs. B's windows and asks him to do the pub ones. Tim ekes 10 quid out of Steve! He then seems to look more kindly on the money making opportunity. I think Sally was horrified that she would be dating a window cleaner! Tim, meanwhile, has invited Jason and Eva to tea to discuss their business future. That dinner party is bound to be awkward!

The comedy storyline of the week appears to be Dev's attempts at getting fit. He's bought a "walking station" aka a treadmill type of platform that he can put behind the counter of the shop which, formerly, didn't have enough room for two people to stand there but there's loads of space now, it seems. Only Dev isn't very careful with it and ends up flying off it and landing face first. Mary gets to say she told him so because she did. She warned him it was a health and safety threat.

Hayley is off for another chemotherapy session. Roy always seems to have trouble getting her out the door and it's no different today when Carla comes in to check the dress will work with the shoes she's picked. She bows to Roy's bus schedule, though, and helps him usher her out the door. Later, Fiz and Chesney are having a child-free tea. Oh look, there's a familiar face. It's Hayley's son Christian who asks after her. Jenna has no idea of the history and tells him Hayley's at the hospital. Fiz realizes who he is, Chesney didn't even know about him. Fiz questions him and he's just as rude and obnoxious as he ever was but he's taken aback when Fiz finally tells him that Hayley has terminal cancer.

In Roy's Rolls, Fiz and Chesney are making it very clear to Christian that he's not welcome. Fiz is suspicious that his motives for changing his tune over wanting to see Hayley are anything but kind. As they send him on his way, Jenna points out that he hasn't paid. Christian responds by saying he doesn't have to pay because the cafe belongs to his mother.

Peter's sitting at home in the flat when Carla arrives with Michelle. She wants to know if he's found a replacement DJ yet but Peter tells Carla he has more important things to worry about - like his son. So Carla tries asking him what he thinks of the party favours. Describing them as "a bit of tat tied up with string" doesn't go down too well, nor does the fact that Carla is about to disappear off to the factory for one final dress fitting before going off to a hotel with Michelle and leaving Peter to his own devices for the rest of the night.

After his accident on the running machine Dev has decided he might be safer taking to the streets. He's been out and bought himself some running kit and, as he shows it off to Sophie, Tim comes into the shop. The two of them are very amused by Dev's purchases which include a tight, white vest and an MP3 player. "Talk about all the gear and no idea," says Sophie.

Over at the factory, Carla is having her final dress fitting. While Michelle and Roy have an awkward conversation as they pass the time waiting, Carla talks to Hayley about the tradition of a bride and groom not seeing each other the night before the wedding. She says she doesn't really want to spend it in a hotel with Michelle when she could be with Peter and Hayley reckons if that's the way she feels then she should be with Peter. Carla has other concerns on her mind, though - what if Peter doesn't turn up to the wedding at all? She looks to Hayley for reassurance but Hayley needs prompting to give the reply Carla's hoping for as she's distracted by the fact that she's totally exhausted.

Across the street we see Peter step outside for a quick smoke. He looks up and sees Tina sitting on the bench. Nothing is said but the two of them exchange glances.

Jason and Eva are round at Sally's and Sally is making the most of the opportunity to stir things up. First she drops into the conversation the fact that Jason climbed out of the toilet window on his wedding day to Sarah Louise and then she mentions that Rosie rang and said to say hi to. Jason's treated to a swipe on the leg from Eva when he tells Sally to say hi back.

Peter's all alone in the flat and feeling the pressure. We see him open a kitchen cupboard and stare at a bottle of wine ...

Over at the cafe, Hayley and Roy arrive back from the hospital. Fiz and Chesney have been waiting for them but, as Hayley's feeling tired, they say their goodbyes. Jenna gives Fiz a bit of a look when she fails to mention the earlier visit from Christian.

Back at Peter's he's on the phone, still trying to find a DJ for the wedding. With no luck he gets up and stares out of the window before going over to the kitchen cupboard. This time he takes out the bottle of wine and pours himself a glass. But just as he's about to take a swig he's interrupted by the doorbell. "It's me," we hear Tina say as he picks up the intercom.

Tina makes out that she's come round to ask after Simon but the conversation moves round to them. Tina tells Peter she'd be a fool to get mixed up with him and he agrees. "The only problem is, I am a fool," says Tina. Peter tells her that he doesn't think she's a fool at all and adds that he sometimes thinks she's the only person around there who's got their head screwed on properly. As they continue to flirt Tina suddenly notices the open wine. She realises he was about to drink it and Peter confesses he was only stopped by her ringing the doorbell. Tina empties the wineglass into the sink and reminds Peter he's meant to be getting married tomorrow. She asks him why he did it and if he doesn't want to go through with the wedding. Peter's response is to ask Tina to keep him company on his last night of freedom. He claims he does still want to go through with it but he still wants her to stay ...

Round at Sally's, she's managed to steer the conversation round to the real reason she invited Jason and Eva for a meal - to discuss ways he could expand his building business. Eva suggests they could become naked builders, along the lines of "butlers in the buff" but Jason points out that one slip of the hammer could put paid to any chances of fathering children. Eva perks up at this - does that mean he'd like to have children? But Jason's mind is focused on the conversation with Tim. He points out that Tim just does a bit of casual labouring, they're hardly business partners. "In that case, I resign," says Tim. "And do what?" asks a horrified Sally. "Become a window cleaner," replies Tim. Which doesn't exactly sit well with Sally.

At the corner shop Dev comes bouncing in, all dressed up in his new running gear. He has his MP3 player loaded up with music and a stop-watch which he hands to Sophie so that she can time how long it takes him to run round the Red Rec and back.

We return to Peter's flat where he and Tina are discussing marriage and the fact that Peter finds it "a challenge" to stick to one woman. Tina says she'd like to know that someone is all hers and Peter says he'd like that, too. Tina asks Peter if he loves Carla. After a pause, he claims he does. "So what's the problem?" asks Tina, looking confused.

Sophie has barely had time to turn the page of her magazine before Dev comes back. He's so out of breath he can hardly stand but he's only been gone for four minutes. In fact, he didn't even make it as far as the park. "At least it's a start," Dev manages to gasp.

Carla and Michelle are outside the Rovers, about to climb into a cab. But Carla confesses she doesn't want to leave Peter on his own tonight as she doesn't quite trust him. So Michelle goes off to the hotel in the cab, leaving Carla to go back to the flat and surprise Peter ...

In the flat Peter and Tina are now sitting on the sofa. The atmosphere between them is electric as Peter asks Tina why she came round. She says she should go but doesn't make any move to do so. Suddenly they hear footsteps on the stairs and Tina just has time to stand up and grab her coat before Carla comes in. Tina tells Carla she just came round to see how Simon was which seems to satisfy her. But then she spots the empty wineglass on the side. Quick as a flash, Tina claims it was hers. Carla doesn't look convinced but Peter denies it was his wine and, after a quick hug and a thank you from Carla for all her help, she makes her escape.

Jason and Eva are back home. While he fiddles with the tv remote so he can switch on the football, Eva asks him if he meant what he said earlier when he called up the stairs that he loved her. "Of course I do, babe," he replies. Not the most romantic way to put it but it's more than good enough for Eva who goes out to the kitchen to put the kettle on, looking like she's just won the lottery.

Back at Peter's Carla is still questioning Peter about the wine. At first he continues to deny it, asking why he would lie to her, tonight of all nights. Carla lists all the reasons why he might want to do so: because of her, because she's made his life miserable, because he's having second thoughts. Finally, he admits that things have been a bit rough for the past couple of weeks but more because of Simon, not the wedding. He tells her that he did actually pour the wine for himself but he never actually drank it because Tina turned up. "Thank God for Tina," says Carla. "Oh yeah," agrees Peter. "Thank God for Tina." Carla says she wishes Peter had told her about how he felt. Peter says in a couple of days' time they'll be sitting beside a swimming pool and that they should focus on that. "Panic over?" asks Carla, trying to sound positive. "Panic over," confirms Peter just as his phone rings. It's a DJ to let him know that he can do the booking for the wedding. Peter's mood has now lifted considerably but Carla is still looking pensive. She reminds him that if he did have just one drink then all they have would go to pot. She tells him that they're both difficult to live with and that they're like a house of cards at the best of times. "Peter," she says, trying to get his attention. "I'd support you, that's a given. But it won't last. None of this will last if you teamed up with that again."

"I won't," says Peter as he takes Carla in his arms. "I promise I won't."

Wednesday 4 December

Roy awakens Hayley with a cuppa, and tells her it's 10 o'clock. She says she feels a little under the weather but is determined to go to the wedding.

Sally is wondering which of three outfits to wear to the wedding. She asks Sophie, saying she wants something romantic. Sophie tells her that romance isn't really her strong point. She asks Tim, but he barely looks up from the paper he's reading, and then he rushes off out, saying he's off to see a mate. Sally hopes this is not another wedding he's getting out of attending, and tells him to make sure he leaves his suit out. "What suit?" says Tim, as he heads off out the door. As soon as he's gone, Sally sits down at the computer, telling Sophie she's window shopping for a suit for Tim. Sophie is horrified, if he's not bothered what he looks like, she can't see why Sally is. Sally, however, is now looking at expensive Italian suits. Sophie tells her that they are far too expensive to just be worn once, but Sally is thinking that if he was careful, it wouldn't look as if it had been worn and she could return it. Sophie is flabbergasted, but Sally just tells her she can be so judgmental, and rushes off.

Carla is in the hotel suite with Michelle and Maria who is doing her hair. She tells them that she thought Peter would have had a drink if Tina hadn't turned up and talked him out of it. Michelle puts it down to pre-wedding nerves.

Steve arrives at Peter's and sniffs around to see if he's had a drink. Peter assures him it was a near miss and it won't happen again. Simon comes into the room looking very smart in his suit, but complains that he's hungry. Steve offers to take him down to the bistro and get him something to eat, while Peter gets himself ready. Outside, Tina is walking along, looking all legs in a short skirt. She sees Steve and Simon going off and looks up at Peter's window.

Fiz goes into the cafe and tells Jenna that she's not going to tell Roy and Hayley about Christian today, she doesn't want to spoil it for them. She's just saying that it isn't easy lying to her like this, when Hayley comes down from upstairs and asks who it is she's lying to. Fiz thinks quickly and tells her a story about Hope.

Maria has whizzed from the hotel to the salon and found clients waiting outside. She apologises and lets them in, just as Audrey arrives. She tells Audrey that she forgot to cancel them, but has to go back to do something more to Carla's hair. Audrey says she'll do the clients' hair.

Hayley comes down looking lovely in a powder blue coat and white flower in the buttonhole. Roy looks at her admiringly and they pose while Jenna takes a photo.

Back at Sally's, she's all dressed up and the new suit for Tim is hanging on the door, but he's hasn't come back and isn't answering his phone. Sophie tells her that she doesn't need Tim, and then opens the door to go off to work at Dev's shop. She calls Sally out to see, because there at the roadside is Tim, standing beside a tatty old van that is signwritten with the words Flush and Go! Sally is horrified to learn that Tim is now the proud owner, although he assures her it will pay for itself in no time. She tells him to go and get changed into the suit she's got him and says they can go in the van. He wanted to get a taxi because he wanted a drink, although he was expecting her to pay for it. She tells him if the van is going to pay for itself, it can start now.

As a surprise, Roy has arranged for a very shiny Mercedes to take him, Hayley and Fiz to the wedding. They are delighted and Hayley says she feels like a film star.

Tina is up in the flat with Peter, saying she wanted to see how he was. She tells him he doesn't have to go through with the wedding, she doesn't think he wants to marry Carla. He doesn't reply, and she leaves.

Roy, Hayley and Fiz arrive at the wedding venue. Hayley is all smiles.

David is in the cafe buying a buttie when Gail comes in. She asks what he's doing round there, he says he's been doing some agency work and asks how Kylie and the children are. Gail tells him that Kylie is struggling financially and will need his help. He says he knows it's his responsibility and of course he will pay.

Hayley is up in the room with Carla who is worried that Peter may not turn up at all. She thinks he has no idea how much she loves him, she couldn't bear it if he wasn't part of her life. Hayley reassures her that everything is going to be fine.

Sophie is in the shop with Dev, who is doing slow bends and stretches. She tells him he's only going to jog slowly so should get going. He then gets a call from the school, he had forgotten they were finishing early today, so off he goes, with his car keys!

Sally and Tim are on their way to the wedding, driving through the hotel grounds. Just before they reach it, the van conks out and Tim can't get it started. Sally is furious, saying she'll be a laughing stock.

Inside the hotel, Fiz, Tina and Hayley are looking round at the plush, expensive surroundings. Fiz wishes she could afford to get married in a place like that. They start wondering where the groom is. Tina goes over to Lloyd asking if he's heard from Peter, when suddenly Steve and Simon appear. Lloyd asks where Peter is, and Tina looks up hopefully but her face falls when she hears Steve say that it's all under control and Peter is coming. Tracy and Rob walk in, and Tracy is quick to make a scathing comment to Tina about having to come on her own. Rob goes off to see Carla, and Tracy wanders over to Fiz and Hayley, but then starts to criticize the venue as being old fashioned and not in a good way. "If you ask me......" she starts but Hayley interrupts and says that no one did ask her, and tells her to button it.

Hayley goes outside and finds Roy, as Tim and Sally get out of the van. She's still embarrassed and cross about the van.

Inside, Steve is still trying to get hold of Peter who is not answering his phone, and starting to get worried.

Upstairs, Rob lies to Carla, saying that he has spoken to Peter and she has a little more time yet.

Downstairs, everyone heaves a sigh of relief when Peter walks in, except, of course Michelle who looks rather disappointed.

And on to part two of the wedding....

Peter waits at the front of the congregation, with Simon and Peter by his side. (sounds a bit Biblical doesn't it?) He looks a bit nervous and thoughtful. Michelle comes trotting in and sits beside Steve. The door opens again and in walk Carla and Rob. Carla is looking stunning and Rob rather proud. Everyone stands up and Peter turns to watch his bride come up the aisle and they smile at each other. Carla walks through smiling at her friends. She hands her bouquet to Hayley and turns to Peter. The camera pans to Tina who looks like she's going to burst into tears.

Back on the street, Audrey locks up the salon just as Mary comes by. Audrey pretends she didn't forget that Mary had an appointment. Thing is, she explains, she's been the only one working and needs a little break but Mary is not inclined to give it to her. She has an appointment and appointments must be honoured. David comes by and overhears the snarky exchange and offers to help. Audrey doesn't like it but Mary is fine with David doing her hair. David insists that Audrey needs the help. David follows Mary inside.

Carla and Peter make their vows. Carla's have been written by her own hand and Peter's is an Apache blessing he found on the internet but which is equally heart-rending, bringing tears to Carla's eyes and a number of other people's as well. He tells her that she makes him want to be a better man. Sally whispers to Tim that Carla looks beautiful and he compliments Sally by saying there are two beautiful women in the room. He can pull one out when he wants to, can't he? It has the desired effect. The registrar introduced Michelle to do a reading. While she does, Roy takes Hayley's fingers in his own.

David has two people under the hair dryers as Mary's leaving so he's been a busy boy. Audrey returns to see things ticking over nicely. She thanks David who wants to stay on and work. She's not so sure about that but another client comes in and David greets her with a friendly smile and offer of a cup of tea. Audrey eventually gives in to David's pleas.

At the wedding, rings are being exchanged along with "I Do" and they are now officially husband and wife, much to Tina's obvious chagrin. Most everyone cheers and applauds though Rob looks a bit like he's barely tolerating the scene and Tina's only give it a bare effort. Sally tucks the price tag back under Tim's suit jacket collar.

David and Audrey say good bye to the last client. Audrey admits she feels sad about the whole situation. David implores her. He really wants to win Kylie back and he knows it's mostly his fault. He is determined.

At the wedding, the music is filling the room as the waiter is filling up Carla's glass. Tracy teases Peter about nearly having a drink the night before.

Audrey pays David for the day's work. He asks if she might keep him on. He wants the money for his family and she can't deny that so orders him to come but stay in the salon and away from Kylie and the kids. He thanks her.

Carla is enjoying herself, bouncing from table to table. She sits down with Tina who's sat on her own, much to Peter's discomfort. Carla tells Tina she shouldn't mope about Tommy, get out there and find a fella. She wants Tina to be as happy as her. She grabs Peter but he wants to slip out for a smoke. On the way he passes Rob who's snarky. He warns her not to hurt Carla or he'll answer to little brother. It's a clear warning if ever I've heard one. Peter just smirks because, you know, he thinks Rob is a load of horse hockey anyway.

After a break, Carla is circulating with the champers. Steve seems to be getting frisky with Michelle who reminds him that she has the key to the bridal suite. Oh very good idea! Tina gets up to leave, but Fiz follows her. Tim is dancing with Sally and he's looking like he feels a bit frisky, too. Sally grabs more champagne and tells him she's heard the bedrooms are gorgeous (they're in a country house hotel). She leaves the room with the wine with him skipping behind her. Fiz catches up with Tina who wants to leave. Fiz persuades her to stay though she understands (or thinks she does). The speeches begin so Tina allows herself to be talked back into the room. Peter's speech about Carla includes a little dig at Rob. He admits he was nervous this morning but was bowled over by his beautiful bride. Tina is not enjoying hearing any of this.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Sally has magically obtained the key to the bridal suite and she and Tim enter boisterously. They start to drag clothes off each other though Sally is careful to fold his suit jacket (all the better for returning it tomorrow!) They bounce onto the bed but are interrupted by Steve and Michelle who had the same idea. At least we know Michelle probably really did have a key. Michelle acts offended and horrified and shouts at them. Sally accuses them of being jealous they hadn't thought of it first. That seems to deflate Michelle's balloon and she and Steve back out and leave Sally and Tim to it.

Back in the ballroom, Rob introduces the DJ for the Bride and Groom's first dance. Peter and Carla swirl onto the dance floor for about 10 seconds before she's whirling off to pull Tracy and Rob on as well but Tracy doesn't seem to want to be in the limelight. Strange for her. Carla shoves a nearby Tina into Peter's arms so she can dance with Rob. Awkward!! Carla gets a scowling Rob to smile and then encourages everyone else to dance. Roy even asks Hayley to dance as well! She's delighted. Fiz pulls Lloyd up as Sally and Tim return. Tim's shirt is untucked and is tie-less as she and Sally swirl around. Carla takes Peter back and Rob dances with Tina. Rob tells Tina that Tommy was an idiot.

The music changes to a fast song. Carla is well into the bubbly by this time but Peter doesn't want to dance a quick step. Fiz takes Roy to one side and tells him that she's so grateful for everything he and Hayley have done for her. She hesitantly tells him that she's sorry but Christian came to the cafe and she saw him off. She didn't say anything but maybe she should have. She also confesses that she told Christian about the cancer but he understands. They cut it short when Hayley comes up. Abba is playing! She stops short, though, a bit of pain perhaps? Roy wants to get her home but she insists on staying. She's not ready to leave as Abba sings about having the time of your life. Gulp. Fiz takes Hayley back to their table.

Peter finds Tina at the bar. He tells her that he couldn't let Carla down. Carla comes back to grab Peter again. Michelle and Steve come out of the lift, Steve now jacketless and with his shirt undone too. I guess they took their turn in the bridal suite as well. Carla is dancing and swigging champagne, clearly drunk by now. Tracy takes her picture while Peter watches with amusement. Carla trips and lands in a froth of dress, laughing. Peter shakes his head and tries to help her up but she pulls him down.

In the corner shop, Gail tells Dev that one motivation is to put up a photo of someone they want to emulate. Dev and Sophie think it's a good idea but Gail warns him not to be too ambitious. Dev leafs through a magazine and suggests Hugh Jackman. Might as well aim high anyway. Sophie wonders why Dev hasn't gone for his run yet. She ridicules his excuses that it's cold out. She ushers him out the door to encouraging shouts from Gail. Go Dev! Outside he puts on that orange monstrosity and starts to jog. He gets as far as the pub and jogs inside.

Peter and Hayley are helping Carla into the bridal suite, with it's bed still perfectly made including the flowers that were on it before either Sally and Tim or Steve and Michelle must have used it. Odd. Hayley takes Carla's shoes off. Carla slurs that she loves Hayley. Peter goes back to the guests while Hayley sorts out Carla in bed, putting the cover over her. Carla drifts off to sleep. Hayley looks tired. She leaves the room to a waiting Roy. She tells him she's tired but it's been a lovely day and she agrees to go home with him.

Sophie comes in. Sally and Tim come laughing down the stairs. They've been up to it again. Sophie's surly about them being all loved up. Sally's unconcerned and cuddles Tim and then asks him to move in. He's probably thought all his birthdays have come at once. Sophie is horrified. Tim warns Sally she won't change him but she smiles and says she isn't so sure about that! Uh oh. Heartbreak City, here comes Sally Webster! He agrees to move in.

Everyone is leaving the wedding venue. Peter is saying goodbye to everyone. He tells Maria and Fiz that Carla is going to be just fine. Steve tells them all the taxis are waiting. Michelle and Steve are taking Simon with them back to Leanne's. Peter hugs Simon and sends him off. He's alone in the decorated ballroom. Except for one person. He turns, sees the booze on the table. He walks toward it, reaching out but what he picks up is one of the disposable cameras that's also on the table. We see that Tina's behind him as he takes a photo of something.

Roy and Hayley arrive home. Hayley looks shattered. Christian comes across the street and wants to come in. Hayley looks at him darkly but doesn't want to talk to him tonight. He tries to interrupt but Roy won't have it and leads Hayley inside.

At the venue, Tina makes her presence known. Peter asks her to stay and talk. Just talk. Tina says she doesn't understand what he wants from her after what happened the night before (but she's the one that keeps running after him). Tina is sure that something further would have happened if Carla hadn't come home. He strokes her face and she moves in close and they kiss passionately.

Hayley sits in the cafe looking tired. She's had a glass of water and is thoughtful Jenna has left a copy of the photo she had taken of them earlier. They agree it's been a good day.

Back to the snoggers. Peter pulls away and pushes her back. Tina strides away out the door. Peter turns around, looking alone in the middle of the wedding finery.

Friday 6 December

Hayley's awake and having a cuppa and wondering what Christian wanted. Roy is dismissive. Hayley's reached out to Christian but he's made it clear he's not interested. Hayley says yes, that's exactly why he must have a very good reason for trying to see her.

Carla and Peter are all loved up in a posh hotel - the kind with two baths. Carla's worried she got so drunk she made a fool of herself but Peter assures her she didn't. Carla is also proud that Peter didn't slip up, even with all those drunk people around him. Peter's proud of himself, too.

As Tim and Sally leave the house, he's saying he's sure Sophie doesn't like him. Sally says once he moves in properly, Sophie will have a chance to get to know him better. She checks he is still moving in today. He is. Though he's forgotten what a big day it is for Sally, with Carla and Peter going off and leaving her in charge.

Beth catches up with Tina and asks her how the wedding went. Tina doesn't give away anything and Beth's disappointed there's no scandal to speak of.

Audrey's regretting letting David work there before she's told Nick and Kylie. At the mention of her name, Kylie comes in and David disappears into the back room in a flash, leaving just a faint whiff of sulphur, I expect. Kylie wants to book herself in for a trim later today.

Roy's in the cafe with Fiz, discussing Christian's visit and Hayley's attitude to it. Hayley comes down. She's going out to get some fresh air. Roy says every encounter with Christian has led to misery.

Carla and Peter walk down the street talking about leaving the factory in Sally's charge. Carla sees Tina and calls out to ask Tina to tell her honestly whether she made a fool of herself last night. Tina says she didn't. Carla goes off to the factory and Peter heads for the bistro to talk to Leanne about Simon. But not before he exchanges meaningful glances with Tina.

In the bistro, Leanne says Simon's gone off to school all right. She offers Peter a coffee.

Carla's the centre of attention in the factory. She sits on a table and answers questions about the wedding and where they're going on honeymoon (Bali). She goes into the office, followed by Sally, who wants a meeting to talk about her responsibilities while Carla's away. Carla says that will only take five minutes and they can do it later. Meanwhile, the machinists discuss Bali's location. They have no idea, so when Sally comes out they ask her. "It's. . . it's. . . in the Southern Hemisphere. . ." is all she can manage.

Peter asks Leanne about Nick. She explains that if someone's on crutches you know they're having problems and try to make things easier for them. In Nick's case, you can't see what's wrong because he looks fine on the outside. She promises Peter she won't let Simon be alone with Nick.

Christian's in the pub. Liz serves him then asks Tina how the wedding went. Tina seems very cynical about weddings in general and Liz says she'll change her mind when it comes to her own wedding. Tina doubts that day will come.

As the machinists crowd into the Rovers for lunch, Fiz sees Christian. She fronts up and demands to know why he's there. Christian tells her nobody's going to stop him from seeing Hayley this time.

Fiz calls Roy from the pub to warn him Christian's on his way. She worries that Christian will be unpredictable after a couple of drinks.

Tim's in the pub distributing advertising flyers for the window-cleaning business. Sally tells him loudly that if she's late home it's because she's got a meeting with Mrs. Connor. . . er, . . . Barlow about being in charge of the factory.

Peter and Carla discuss the need to see Simon before they go away. Carla wants to be reassured that they've done the right thing. She and Peter kiss.

Beth's looking forward to two-hour lunch breaks and early finishing when Carla's away but Sally tells her she's going to be writing sown every incident and reporting back to Carla.

Christian tells Fiz he's leaving the pub and going to the cafe now. "You do know Hayley's got terminal cancer!" Fiz says. He does, thanks to her.

Peter comes into the Rovers and Liz fawns and flatters. She's trying to keep him away from Tina but Peter asks directly if he can have a word with Tina - it's about Simon's childcare. Tina asks if she can take her break now and tells Peter she'll be with him as soon as she's finished what she's doing.

Roy's like a faithful guard dog at the door of the cafe when Christian arrives. Christian says he knows how he acted in the past, but people do change. He says he just wants to sit down and get to know Hayley a little better. He promises not to upset her.

Tina's about to join Peter when Carla comes into the Rovers. She wants the second set of factory keys to give to Sally. Peter asks her to sit down and buys her a wine. Behind the counter, Liz warns Tina that she's had a lucky escape. What if Carla had come in while Peter and Tina were having a cosy chat?

Christian's upstairs being offered some tea. Roy is standing guard like a Highland collie over a new puppy and generally being unwelcoming. Hayley persuades him to go downstairs. When Roy's gone, Hayley thanks Christian for coming back and he thanks her for not shutting the door in his face.

When Carla goes back to the factory, Tina tells Liz she'll take her break now. "I imagined you would," coos Liz. Peter and Tina head for the smoking area to talk.

Audrey tells David she can manage on her own for the rest of the afternoon. She's just trying to get rid of him before Kylie comes in for her appointment. Audrey has resolved to tell Kylie and Nick she's thinking of employing David. Then when she tells them she is employing him, they won't be too shocked. Once again, as soon as her name is mentioned, there's Kylie. She's got to work later so wonders whether Audrey can do her trim now. David has made himself scarce by crawling into a tiny space below the hairwash basins.

Roy's still sceptical about Christian's motives. But he says Hayley seems to believe in him.

Upstairs, Christian's showing Hayley some photos of her grandchildren. Hayley asks if they know about her and is told "not yet." Would Hayley like to meet them? She would. This is when Christian racks up the emotional pressure. He's not working. The record shop closed a long time ago and he couldn't find another job for a long time. He's working in a supermarket but has debts left from when he wasn't working. Can Hayley help him out? He needs five thousand pounds and he needs it today!

Hayley repeats "£5,000?". And Christian nods. She asks what will happen if he doesn't get it, and he tells her he has to get it, right away. She asks if he has tried the conventional way, like borrowing it from a bank, and he tells her it is the bank that wants it back. He asks her if she is saying she won't help him, and she replies that she doesn't know what she is saying yet. Sighing deeply, he smiles at her and tells her he will go and collect the kids from nursery and bring them round to see her, reminding her she had said she would like to meet them. She agrees she would like that, so he tells her it will give her a little bit of time to make some financial arrangements while he is gone.

She sits quietly, and he tells her he understands she probably doesn't have that kind of money kicking around the house. She tells him it is a lot of money. He agrees, saying it has been keeping him awake at night, then pushes the photos of the children in front of her, saying "But you would like to meet Maisie and Sam, yeah?" Horrible blackmailing **!!*#.

In the smoking area behind the Rovers, Peter and Tina are talking, or rather Peter is talking and Tina is listening. He is giving her an apology for coming on to her after his wedding, telling her it shouldn't have happened, and it will never happen again. Tina points out that it did happen, and that's as maybe, but now Peter wants her to forget all about it, and most of all, never tell Carla. Easy for him to say, but by the look on Tina's face, not so easy for her to do. He tells her if things were different it would be a different story. She points out it could be different now, but he reminds her he is married now. She reminds him he was also married when he kissed her yesterday, and now he is just scared she will tell Carla about it. Liz comes out looking for Tina, so she leaves him with the parting shot. "You have every right to be scared!" Is that a threat?

On his way out, Christian tells Roy he is off to pick up Hayley's grandchildren, and will be back in about an hour. Roy is surprised to say the least, and asks Hayley if she really thinks he will be back with them. She tells him she is sure he will, and goes on to tell him why. Roy is furious, but Hayley is under no illusions, she knows full well she has been bribed, and is willing to go along with it. Roy is not happy - not happy at all, and it has nothing to do with the money, it is because the scoundrel is taking advantage of his beloved wife.

Over in the Salon, Kylie is getting her hair done, totally oblivious to the fact that David is lurking in the back room, listening to everything she is saying to Audrey. She tells her the biggest thing she can't forgive David for is making her so happy before he did what he did to Nick. She loved him for taking Max on as his own, and being such a great father to him and Lily, he had given her something she had always wanted, a proper family, and that is what she can't forgive him for. Audrey is blustering, trying to change the subject away from David and onto something else like the Bistro, but unfortunately Kylie is in the mood for talking about David, and he is taking it all in with tears in his eyes. She too is crying now, saying he shouldn't have made her as happy as that, only to ruin it all, and she hates him for that.

When she leaves, Audrey insists on only charging her £5 as she is family, which looks fair to me, as it doesn't look a lot different except it is now down instead of up. We also find out that Audrey usually charges Gail full price because she has very difficult hair. I must say, I wouldn't mind mine being difficult if it was half as thick as Gail's!

David comes out after she leaves, saying he only wishes Kylie would talk to him the way she just had to Audrey, but he knows if he tries to talk to her he will be told to stay away from her. Audrey assures him that given time, a lot could change, but David wants to know how long it's likely to take before he will be able to see his kids again, but she can't tell him that.

Roy and Hayley are upstairs talking now. He is all prepared to have a lot to say to him when he comes back, and she quietly asks him not to do that, because she would really like to see her grandchildren, and even though they both know they are being used as a bribery tool, it's not their fault. Roy therefore agrees to say nothing, but is not happy, and asks if she plans to give him money. She replies that she won't know for sure what she will do until she sees him again, and asks if he is worried about the money. He assures her he is not, he is only worried about him taking advantage of her. She tells him she won't let him do that, and won't do anything she doesn't want to do.

Fiz and Chesney are outside discussing the fact that Sally will be in charge of the factory while Peter & Carla are on their honeymoon when they spot Christian returning with his children. Fiz is extremely suspicious, and wants the two of them to head over there to keep an eye on things.

Christian introduces the children to Hayley as a 'very important friend, someone who has been a big help to them', which gets a "Harrumph" from Roy, but Hayley beams a welcome to the little ones, and thanks them for coming to see them. I notice that Hayley is looking extremely pale and drawn today, the makeup department are doing an excellent job of giving her good days and bad.

Hayley is obviously really enjoying having a chat with little Maisie, who is rather sweet, and very polite. Sam, in the pushchair is a lot more shy, and doesn't say a lot. Hayley goes off to make them each a milkshake, and tells Roy to pull out his train set to show them. As soon as Roy is out of earshot, Christian reminds Hayley they need to have that private conversation. Unfazed, she tells him she is sure they can, she just has to get the milkshakes for the children.

With the children settled with Roy and his train set downstairs, Hayley and Christian go up into the flat. She tells him he has two lovely children, and he reminds her they are her grandchildren (now it suits him!). She asks him if he is sure he really needs that much money, as it is rather a lot. He gets annoyed, asking her if she is disbelieving him, whether she expects him to provide invoices, or show her his books. She tells him she was just asking. He shouts at her that he was just asking too, and thought she would jump at the chance to make amends. She shakes her head, and asks him what she would be making amends for, moving closer, he tells her "Alright, call it making up for lost time then." Moving in so close, she is backed up against the kitchen counter, he shouts at her, saying "All those years, and I didn't know who my father was!". Hayley protests, saying she didn't know he existed. Still yelling at her, he tells her whether that is true or not, there are all those years to make up for, years when she/he might have helped him out, but she didn't, but now she can help him and her grandchildren that he has just brought there for her to meet. Pushing his face really close to hers, he menacingly asks "Are you now telling me you're not going to?"

Downstairs, Fiz and Chesney walk in on a lovely scene of Roy delighting Maisie with his train set, while Sam sleeps soundly in his pushchair. She wants to know what Christian is talking to Hayley about upstairs, but Roy tells her grimly that Hayley had better answer that one herself.

Hayley is holding her own upstairs. She tells Christian to stop shouting at her, and he backs away, saying he wasn't. She assures him he was, then sits down and tries to talk to him about how her life has been, how things didn't really fall into place for her until she discovered who she really was, and following that, met Roy. All this goes right over Christian's head though, he is only interested in knowing whether he has been wasting his time coming there. She thinks for a minute, then tells him he hasn't. She then takes her chequebook from the drawer and writes him a cheque for £5,000. One slightly redeeming feature of Christian's here, she asks him if he is sure it will be enough, and he replies "Should be, yeah".

Tim is in the Rovers with Sally, and is very chuffed. Liz has just taken him on as the regular window cleaner of the Rovers. Sally is not convinced the whole thing is a good idea, it's not exactly Sally bragging material, but he assures her it will be a little gold mine, what with all the new high rise buildings going up, window cleaners are going to be in high demand.

Fiz and Roy are discussing the transaction that might be taking place in the flat above, and Fiz is not happy about Christian being anywhere near Hayley. However, Roy tells her she is still capable of making her own decisions. Christian comes back down, telling the children they have to leave right away. Little Maisie is very excited about the train set, and wants to show him, she also announces that she too wants to be called Fiz because she likes that name. Christian tells her she can't because she already has her own name, and rushes them to get their things on. Hayley comes down, and Christian says (fairly sincerely I thought), that it was nice to have met everybody, and hopes they will all keep in touch. Maisie breaks away from her father, and runs over to Hayley. She whispers to her "Sorry to hear you are poorly, and hope you will get well soon". Hayley is obviously touched, and strokes her hair, saying "Thank you lovey, we will have to see what happens won't we?". Christian rushes the little ones out, and Hayley chokes back the tears that we can see welling in her eyes, she suggests they all go to the Rovers because she wants to buy them all a drink.

In the Rovers, Beth is banging on about Carla and Peter, she tells Tina she gives the marriage twelve months at most because what with her being drunk at the wedding and him being an alcoholic and a womaniser, in fact she figures he probably has someone else in mind already. Tina's last nerve has been hit, and is about to give Beth a mouthful when Liz steps in and takes her aside. She tells her she is tired, hasn't eaten all day, and packs her off home. On the way, she sees a cab pull up outside Barlow's Buys, so she stops and waits for Carla and Peter to come down.

In the booth at the Rovers, Hayley tells Fiz and Chesney the full story about why Christian was there. They are shocked when she tells them she gave him the money he asked for. Chesney asks why he brought his kids, and she tells him it was to put more pressure on her, to make her aware that it wasn't just him, that his whole family needs help. Chesney asks if it was kind of weird meeting them for the first time, and she answers that it was, but at the same time it was rather wonderful.

Roy can't hold his tongue any more, and calls Christian a scoundrel and a blackmailer. He agrees it is a strong word, but feels it is an appropriate one in his case, as he went there with the sole purpose of walking out with £5,000 in his pocket. Fiz and Chesney gasp at the amount, but Hayley tells them that although she knows it is a lot of money, she is really glad he came to her for it, and is really glad she gave it to him. Ches suggests she stop the cheque, and Fiz agrees, saying she knows he won't come back, but Hayley won't hear of this. She explains that she has met her grandchildren, which means a lot to her, and in a way has given them a small legacy that she hopes will allow their father to go on providing for them. "You hope!" says Roy. But she tells him that is all she can do. She goes on to tell them all not to feel sorry for her, or feel she has been taken advantage of, because she really has had a wonderful - wonderful day.

Peter and Carla are loading their bags into the boot of the taxi when Tina walks over and calls out to Carla, which obviously shocks Peter to the core. Carla is pleased to see her and hugs her, thanking her for looking after Simon. Over her shoulder Peter is frantically shaking his head at Tina. He tells Carla to hurry up or they will miss their flight, and bundles her into the car. As the taxi pulls away, Tina stands in the middle of the road, watching them snuggle up together in the back seat. There are tears in her eyes as the credits roll.

Sunday 8 December

Written by Joe Turner Directed by Ian Bevitt

It's Sunday morning. Jason comes out of Number 13 nicks the newspaper off his mum's house while Audrey and David have a discussion in front of the salon. Audrey is going to tell the family that's she's given David his job back. David thinks he should tell them himself but Audrey thinks this is a bad idea. She sends him into the salon to clean up the back room while she talks to the family. Gloria comes round and asks if she can get her hair done. Audrey tells her they're closed but David offers to do it anyway. Audrey gives up on that front and goes off to face the family.

In the corner shop, Mary and Sophie chat about exercise. Dev comes in looking snappy. Wait, now, Sophie protests. He promised to go for a run with her but it seems he's come up with lots of excuses including doing the VAT. She calls him on it, pointing out she gave up church to go running. She and Mary both shame him into it. He slinks off to change.

Maria is taking Liam to sports club and drops one of his shoes. Julie calls after them and catches up. Maria jokes that keeping all his activities organized is a nightmare, one, Julie sighs, that she'd love to have.

Audrey has broken the news to three sour looking faces. Audrey defends David as trying to make up for his mistakes. Audrey isn't asking their permission but wanted them to know. Kylie and Nick strop off in a huff. Gail looks astonished. A roof over his head is one thing but a job is quite another. She thinks Audrey is rushing things for Kylie and Nick's sake.

Jason is scarfing down Todd's bacon butty, thinking Todd left it but Todd, coming into the room, was going to take it to work so the brothers bicker over it while Jason continues to eat it. Sean comes out of the kitchen and presents Todd a nice packed lunch for him instead. Todd is pleased and shows appreciation. Jason scowls because he didn't get one too! Sean points out Jason isn't working today. After Todd leaves, Jason then teases Sean and accuses him of fancying Todd. Sean strenuously objects, virtually guaranteeing that he does actually have eyes for Todd.

In the Kabin, an old Dave Clark Five tune comes on the radio. This energizes Dennis to leap around the shop dancing. He even picks up the lollipop sign and plays air guitar with it. Emily comes in and is amused but Rita is distinctly not and rains all over Dennis' parade. She treats him like a naughty schoolboy, you know.

Gail comes to the door to find David outside. She tells him he's got to stop pushing. He hands her an envelope of cash for the bills and for the kids. Gail warns him to keep his distance in the future. He promises to send money around every week through Audrey. He does want a word with Kylie but Gail sighs with exasperation. Does he not listen to a word she's saying? David backs off and returns to the salon.

Julie and Brian are talking in the cafe. Brian tells her they should be able to make some of their dreams come true, such as living in a different country. Scotland, France... or Wales? He broaches the idea. Some dreams unfortunately are not going to happen. He pretends he's as devastated as she is over the turn down for fostering but they have a lot of adventures to look forward to together.

Mary and Sinead coo over baby Jake and tease Gary about his ears. Dev and Sophie come up the road after their run. Dev is knackered, totally out of breath. Gary says he knows a guy that's a personal trainer, ex-army buddy of his. Dev doesn't think that's such a good idea even though Gary points out he was just beaten in a race by a girl. No way. Dev doesn't even want to meet this mate.

David has finished with Gloria's hair. Maria pops in to see what's going on and since she's got a bit of time, she goes in to the back to put the kettle on for everyone. David sidetracks Gloria's inquiries about where David's been lately. Nick comes in looking grim. Gloria is about to leave but stays put when he arrives. Nick starts goading David, asking for a haircut. Audrey tries to diffuse the situation but Nick is insistent. He sits down and pushes and pushes, half of what he's saying dripping with innuendo. Gloria is avidly taking it all in. Of course she doesn't know the half of it. David refuses to cut Nick's hair. Nick persists until David walks out, disgusted, followed by Nick. Gloria sees the show is over and gets up to pay for her cut.

Outside, Nick chases after David. He insists that David leave the area, he's not part of the family and they had a deal. He threatens David, pointing out where he'd be if everyone knew the truth.

Todd has had his packed lunch but is now in the pub for a break. Sean asks him what he's doing later and invites him for a drink at the Bistro, his treat. Todd pretends to be embarrassed he's sponging but Sean insists. They're friends! Beth and Julie are having a bit of lunch. Beth reveals that she wasn't a natural mother at first, but when Craig got a bit older, she really bonded to him. Julie reminds her that they were turned down. Beth points out that they can always appeal the decision and urges her to fight for what she wants. Julie jumps up with new purpose.

Kylie is admiring Eva's new shoes. She spots David across the street and gives him the evil eye as he goes into the salon.

Julie and Brian are now in the Bistro while she excitedly tells him about appealing. He's a bit frantic, trying to dissuade her but Julie's fired up. She's going to try, she's going to fight for what she wants.

Back at the pub, Dennis is telling Gloria about his adventures in music promotion back in the day. She even remembers some of the acts he worked with. Rita and Emily arrive. Emily laughs about catching Dennis' performance earlier but Rita is surly and sarcastic about it. Gloria can spot that Rita's not happy to see her there and makes a hasty exit, deciding not to push things. Rita sends Dennis to the bar where Gary is stood with a dark haired mate. This is an ex-army buddy, the trainer he was telling Dev about. The friend thinks Gary has called him for help or that he wants something. No so, says Gary, his life is great these days and Izzy is the reason.

Kylie sees the envelope from David. She doesn't want his money. Gail confesses to reminding David that he has responsibilities. She also thinks both of them need to start talking, just like adults. Kylie decides that if David wants to talk, she's going to talk to him. She takes the envelope, gets her coat and leaves.

In the pub, Dennis is calling Rita on her attitude towards Gloria. Rita calls Gloria a busybody. Dennis says he was just having a laugh and a walk down memory lane. Eva, Beth, Sinead and Sean are all ogling Gary's good looking mate across the bar. The women rate him, Beth giving him top marks at 10, but, hastily, says Kirk is an 11. Dev comes in and Gary motions him over. Dev mentions that Mary had texted him to come to the pub. Gary makes Mary's excuses. Smells like a set up to me! Gary invites Dev to join them and introduces Dev to Kal who just happens to be a personal trainer. Dev got beaten by a girl in a run around the park, he adds, to Kal. Dev and Kal both realize they've been set up.

In the salon, Kylie has come to see David. She promises she's not going to cause a scene and they need to sort it out on their own. David asks Audrey go leave. She goes reluctantly, muttering about being well insured.

At last David has his chance to talk to Kylie but she's still as hostile as ever so he admits that he overheard her talking to Audrey in the salon. Kylie claims she can't even remember what she said so David reminds her that she was talking about her hopes and feelings. He says he reckons that the feelings they had for each other back when they first met haven't gone. But when David tries to give Kylie the mortgage money she refuses to take it. She says she can provide for the kids, they don't need David and they don't want him and Nick's also telling him to stay away. "And we all know why, don't we?" asks David. "Because you slept with my brother."

Meanwhile Nick arrives home to be told by Gail that Kylie's gone round to see David. This causes him to have a meltdown, his shouting wakes the baby and poor old Max gets dispatched upstairs to his room as per usual. Nick is convinced that Gail and Audrey are trying to get David and Kylie back together but Nick says Kylie knows what David's like and she won't have him back.

It looks like Nick knows what he's talking about because things are not going well in the salon. David accuses Kylie of always lying to him while Kylie tells David that everything always has to be about him. David claims that all he ever did was try to build them a perfect life and all she ever did was sleep with his brother. Kylie has run out of words so she hurls a bottle of shampoo at the wall. "That's twelve quid a bottle!" exclaims David. "Right, well I won't miss next time!" Kylie retorts as she picks up another one.

In the Rovers, Eva, Beth, Sinead and Sean are all eyeing up the new talent, each one convinced that Gary's friend Kal is checking them out, whilst at another table, Dennis is regaling Rita and Emily with stories from his erstwhile music career back in the sixties. Meanwhile, Gary's plans to put Kal together with Dev don't seem to be working. Kal says he doesn't need any more clients and Dev doesn't believe he needs the services of a personal trainer. That is until Kal refers to him as being an overweight shopkeeper. It's like a red rag to a bull and Dev challenges Kal to prove that he's as good as he claims to be by taking him on.

Julie and Brian are having a drink in the Bistro. She's keen to discuss why they've been turned down for adoption while Brian is doing his level best to talk about anything else. Fortunately for him he's rescued by Julie's mother ringing her for a chat.

In the salon Kylie has calmed down and David takes the opportunity to ask her why she slept with Nick. She tries to explain her reasons and says that if she could turn back the clock she would. So David admits something to Kylie: the day he found out she'd organised the surprise trip to the cottage he came home with a bunch of flowers as a surprise. He tells Kylie that he was hiding on the stairs when she came home with Gail and he heard her tell Gail all about how she'd slept with Nick. Kylie is so shocked by this revelation that, for once, she's lost for words.

Back in the Rovers, the girls are still admiring Kal while he discusses exercise with Dev. It turns out they have something in common as they are both single parents. Dev tells him that he wants to be fit enough to look after his kids and around long enough to watch them grow up.

Meanwhile, Dennis sits back down at the table with Rita and Emily with a big grin on his face. In the time it's taken to make a couple of quick calls on his mobile it seems he's managed to re-launch his career as a music promoter. He tells them that he's hooked up with his old friend, Richie DeVries who thinks they may be able to put on a show or even organise a tour. Rita looks sceptical so Dennis insists he's just dipping his toe in the water. Emily says next thing he could be swimming the channel but Rita points out that you can drown in two inches of water.

Marcus goes into the Bistro to book a table for dinner where he's accosted by Brian who needs advice. Marcus can't believe it when Brian admits he hasn't been brave enough to tell Julie about the job offer and says that until he does, he doesn't know what more he can do for him.

We return to the salon where Kylie is asking David why he didn't say something when he heard her talking to Gail about Nick. He's in tears by now, as is Kylie, and he admits to her how close he came to killing himself when they went to the cottage. He says that it seemed to be the only way to stop the hurting. Then he tells her that the only thing that stopped him was when he got a phone call from Max. "I'm so sorry," cries Kylie as she sits down beside him. David holds out his hand and Kylie takes it in hers.

At long last Kylie seems to be listening to David although she tells him that they don't deserve to be happy because they're bad people who do bad things. But David insists they just lost their way a bit and that everybody deserves a second chance. As for Nick, David says that if he keeps working on him, he's sure he'll come round. This simple statement seems to flick a switch in Kylie and she suddenly turns on David. "You twist things and you plot and you scheme," she shouts. "We can never be together." She tells him that all they've got left is hate and disgust and that he makes her feel bad. "You're gonna have to go and I don't just mean to your gran's," spits Kylie. "To another town or another country. I will not be happy until you're a long, long way away from me."

In the Bistro Brian is bending Marcus's ear about his job dilemma when Sean and Todd come in for their evening out together. Marcus uses the opportunity to beat a hasty retreat but Brian doesn't take Sean's hint to leave him and Todd alone and Sean finds himself having to go and buy a round of drinks. While he's at the bar Brian asks Todd if he and Sean are an item. "Never in a million years," insists Todd. "Not if he was the last man in the world," he adds, to really make his point.

Kylie arrives home to find Nick playing computer games with Max while Gail's upstairs with the baby. Nick asks how her talk with David went. "You can't keep 'owt quiet in this family," grumbles Kylie but she decides to tell him anyway. As we see Gail listening with horror from the top of the stairs Kylie admits to Nick that she told David to get as far away from there as possible.

Back in the Bistro Todd goes off to the bar to get the next round so Sean takes the opportunity to ask Brian to go home. "Why?" asks Brian. "Because three's company," says Sean, since Brian seems determined not to take the hint. Brian seems surprised because, as he explains to Sean, he had thought he and Todd were together but that Todd had said 'no way'. Sean looks very put out at this and insists that Brian tells him, word for word, exactly what Todd said to him.

Gail is now sitting down with Kylie and Nick and she tells Kylie that she thinks she should give David another chance. But Nick has other ideas and says that nothing is ever going to get better while David is hanging around. He says that Gail was hoping that Kylie and David would make up. Kylie says that's never going to happen and adds that she gave David back his 'guilt money'. "What money?" asks Nick. Gail says it was to help with the mortgage and the kids. "Another brilliant Gail idea," mutters Kylie. Nick says that if they need money they should go to him. He adds that Kylie is right and having David around only causes trouble for all of them.

In the Rovers, Beth, Eva and Sinead look quite excited when Kal goes over to speak to them but they look less than impressed when he suggests that they join his supermodel boot camp. Eva doesn't have any problem with the supermodel part, feeling sure he's referring to her, but none of them seem keen when they learn it starts at 5.30am. Kal goes back to join Dev and Gary. He and Dev seem to be bonding over the fact that they are both single partners. It turns out that Kal's wife also died and then Gary tells him that Dev's wife was recently murdered.

Outside in the street, Julie and Brian are sitting on a bench with a take-away. Julie can tell something's up because Brian has barely touched his chips and he says he feels like they're reached a crossroads in their lives. "The question is, how do we know which road to take?" he asks. "Shame we don't have a sat nav," replies Julie. Brian wonders what they do if they get it wrong and Julie says that they should retrace their steps and start again. Julie adds that they started on this journey together and it doesn't make any sense unless they're heading for the same destination. She tells him that tomorrow morning she's going to phone Trudy because she's sure that they can sort out whatever reason it was that made them turn them down for fostering.

Kylie is now alone with Gail. She tells her that this is the only family she's ever had and she can feel it slipping away from her. "Well it's not," Gail tries to reassure her. But Kylie says she doesn't know who to trust. She doesn't trust herself and she could never trust David again. Gail says that she won't let her down and she hasn't forgotten how much damage David's caused their family. She says that David has promised he'll keep his distance but Kylie says she wants more distance. "Do you hate him that much?" asks Gail. "That's the worst thing," replies Kylie. "I don't hate him. I still love him." Gail perks up at this and says that's a good thing. But Kylie disagrees. She hates herself for loving him. She despises what she did and what he did. "Why won't he just go away and leave me alone?" she sobs, as she falls into Gail's arms.

Wednesday 11 December

It's breakfast time at the Platt's, and Kylie is stressing over her whole situation with the David when Max announces that he doesn't feel well. Kylie realises that he does seem to have a bit of a temperature, so Gail offers to look after him if he stays off school.

Julie and Brian are walking down the Street, and Julie tells him that she's going to phone the fostering agency, and if she can't get through she's going to go down there in person during her dinner break. Brian tries to put her off, but she won't have it.

Sean is huffy with Todd over what he said to Brian about them not being an item and that they never would be. Todd explains that Brian was poking his nose in and he was just trying to shut him up, what he said wasn't necessarily the truth. He says he likes Sean, but he doesn't want to rush things, he thinks they should take it one day at a time and see how they go.

David sees Kylie go into the bistro, so goes and knocks on Gail's door. He asks if he can see his daughter, and begs Gail to bring her to the door. Gail tells him that she has Max at home, poorly, and was just going to go to the chemist to get him some medicine. David urges her to let him watch the children while she goes. Gail won't let him, but eventually agrees to him going to get the medicine.

In the Kabin, Rita is explaining ageing rock star Ritchie's real name and background to Norris, apparently his real name is Rodney Purvis. Just then Dennis rushes in, all excited, saying that he and Ritchie are meeting up later for a drink. Rita wonders where they will find a suitable venue, but Dennis just tells her that's the fun of the music business, they'll find somewhere.

David arrives back on Gail's doorstep with the medicine. He asks again to come in a see the children, but she's reluctant. Just then Max spots him and comes rushing out, delighted to see him. He asks David to come in and play, and see the spaceship he's made. He begs Gail too, so in the end Gail gives in. "Ten minutes," she sighs. David grins and thanks her.

In the pub, Kal, Dev's new fitness instructor is showing him the exercise plan he's worked out for him. Michelle asks if he can do a plan for her, but Steve butts in and says she's already in great shape.

Back at the Platt's, David is cuddling Lily while Max zooms the spaceship around him and is disappointed when David says he has to get back to work. Just then Nick comes in and is angry to find David there. He tells David to get out, and David says he's going. "Even though it is my house," he says.

Julie and Brian have met up in the cafe. Julie has found out that their social worker is on leave until after Christmas, much to Brian's relief. Julie goes off to buy Christmas cards, and as Brian gets up to leave he bumps into Marcus just coming in. He tries to talk to him, but Marcus puts him off, saying he's had the day from hell, so Brian leaves.

Todd has come in behind Marcus and hears their brief exchange, and goes to sit with Marcus, who then confesses that he only said what he did to Brian to get rid of him, he didn't want to hear one more word about Brian's job in Wales. Todd pricks up his ears at this as his Auntie Julie hasn't mentioned anything. Then he realises that Julie doesn't know.

Nick is giving Gail the third degree about David being in the house, and demands to know if Kylie knows about it. Gail gets angry, she's in the middle of the lot of them, trying to keep everybody happy and it's not a nice place to be. Nick tells her that if she sides with David he will leave and she will never, ever see him again.

Todd sees Julie in the Street and asks her how the fostering is going. Julie wonders how he knew about it. He tells her Marcus told him, and Brian had told Marcus. He then tells her how Brian has applied for a job in Wales, doesn't want to foster and has only been going along with it to keep her happy. Julie can hardly believe what she's hearing.

In the pub, Michelle tells Steve that she thinks she would like to train with Kal and they can pay for it out of their joint account, just like his college fees. Steve doesn't like this idea, he thinks she can run round the Red Rec for free to get fit. She tells him he could go to the library, he doesn't need to go to college.

David is standing at the bar when Nick comes in and asks when he's going to get the message. David tells him he doesn't want to argue, he just wants to be a father to Max and Lily. David asks him how he can ever make amends for what he did. Nick tells him to turn himself in. "What? And go to prison?" asks David. Nick tells him he hasn't got the guts, and tells him to go away for good.

Leanne calls on Gail, looking for Nick. She sees that Gail seems a bit upset and asks what's wrong. Gail explains what happened with David and Nick earlier. She says she now feels she's being pulled in both directions especially as Nick has told her to choose between him and David.

Dennis is waiting for Ritchie in the bistro, accompanied by Rita and Norris. Gloria brings the drinks over and sits herself down too.

Leanne comes in and marches up to Nick, telling him that Gail has told her of his order to choose between himself and David. "What if she chooses David?" asks Leanne, "what are we going to do, sell up and move to another town?" Nick is sure it won't come to that, Gail will make the right decision.

Sixty-something rock star Ritchie then comes in, sporting long hair, dark glasses and leather jacket. Dennis greets him warmly.

Brian and Julie are over in the Rovers, and she tells him she knows about his job offer in Wales. He looks shifty and tells her things have been complicated. She says they have all evening.

David is locking up the salon when he gets a text message from Gail asking him to come and put Max to bed.

Ritchie is telling Dennis and co about all the gigs he has done and who he has played with. Gloria is obviously impressed and says they ought to get a gig in Manchester. Dennis agrees, saying he still has lots of contacts, and is sure Rita will have too. Gloria then says they can play in the bistro if they like, and Dennis is delighted. Rita looks worried.

David arrives at Gail's and Max is really pleased to see him.

Julie is angrily asking Brian how he went through the whole job application process and never told her, and went through the fostering application, lying about it. She's furious, and tells him she's going to Eileen's and doesn't want him anywhere near her. "I'll never forgive you for this," she says as she rushes out of the door, almost bumping in to Marcus who is on his way in.

David comes downstairs after putting Max and Lily to bed. Gail tells him he won't be able to do this again, the situation is impossible. Tearfully she tells him it would be best if he moves away. David points out he may never see Max and Lily again, he can't believe Gail is doing this. She says she is more sorry than he will ever know. Just then Max comes down, asking if David is going now. Gail tells him to say goodbye. "Bye bye," says Max, innocently, as David crouches down and hugs him. Gail then sends Max upstairs to bed as David asks, "Is that it then?" Gail tells him it is and as she shuts the door behind him she weeps.

Friday 13 December

Gail's not in any mood to listen to Audrey's pleas on behalf of David. Nor is anyone else in the house. She asks where David's supposed to go and Nick says he can go and jump in the canal for all he cares.

Maria, Marcus, Ozzie and Liam leave the house. Liam has a Roman spear and a speaking part! The spear is for the nativity play. Marcus glances over to see Todd coming out of the corner shop. He glares at him, annoyed that Todd revealed what he was told in confidence, but Maria warns him not to get any more involved.

Julie doesn't want any breakfast, even though Todd's been out to buy something specially. A postcard has arrived from Eileen, who is having a lovely time at Cousin Patsy's. Who? Julie's trying to take the blame on herself and says she backed Brian into a corner. She wonders whether she's a bully or a gullible fool. "I don't know which is worse." Todd says he wishes he hadn't said anything but I don't believe him.

In the bistro, Gail tells Leanne she's just trying to keep everybody happy. Leanne says that's everybody but Gail. Nick's in the office and Gail tells Leanne not to disturb him.

Rita's chatting to Dennis in the Kabin. He's dressed in his high-vis and armed with his lollipop traffic sign but he tells her that later on he's got a meeting in the bistro where he will have his management hat on. He'll be liaising with Gloria and Ritchie, though Ritchie's the one with the talent. "So why do you need Miss Piggy?" asks Rita. She tells Dennis he should remind Gloria that the backing singer is supposed to stay at the back.

David goes to the salon and Audrey tells him Gail won't budge. He asks if this is what his mum wants. Audrey says it's what Nick wants. David believes that's what really counts. "It's what's always important." He thinks his kids are going to grow up thinking he's abandoned them. And how long will it be before Kylie and Gail fall out and his kids are being raised in a bedsit? Audrey tries to give him a handful of cash - he'll need food, his coach fare and to top up his phone. David refuses. He says he won't need money where he's going. Audrey asks if he's got someone he can stay with. Graeme? David hugs her and tells her he'll never forget what she's done for him. Audrey suggests he just lie low for a couple of months to give his family time to calm down. "No, this is it for me. Curtains," David says. He has tears in his eyes as he tells his gran to look after herself.

Kylie finds Gail looking out some family photos to give to David. She's annoyed because she thinks Gail will meet David to give him the photos, hand over the rest of the week's housekeeping and the next thing David will be back in the house with Gail cooking him dinner. Angrily, she says Gail should just forget it. She doesn't want to argue. She's going for a walk. If Lily wakes, Gail can sent a text message.

Dev's educating Sophie and Gloria about the importance of a good warm-up. However, when fitness trainer Khalid arrives he seems a little scared. Kal orders the women out of the shop so he can take some "before" pictures of Dev in his vest with his belly hanging slack. Of course, Sophie and Gloria sneak a peek round the door.

Kylie finds David at the Rovers' bar. "You've no intention of leaving, have you?" she demands. He says he's allowed one last pint in his local. He insists he's going through for Max and Lily's sake he'd rather not. She sneers at his doting dad act and calls him a boy, not a man, a little lad who gets his Nan to fight his battles. She insists the kids will be better off without him. She tells him he needs to pack. She wants to know if he's going to his dad's. She knows he can't be going to Sarah's because he doesn't have his passport. David says where he's going he'll travel light - he won't need any bags or luggage after today. He tells Kylie to give the kids a kiss from him. Kylie's a little scared now. She says he's creeping her out. David says Nick told him to get a grip and be a brave soldier, "and whatever Nicky wants, Nicky gets."

Todd's a bit too casual as he sits in the cab office playing basketball with the wastepaper bin and lying to the customers about how close their cabs are. Marcus comes in and says he needs an explanation. Todd says Julie's his auntie. He's saved her from a lifetime of lies. He says he wasted three years of his life with someone who lied about what he was. And they didn't have kids to screw up. "Julie's a sweetheart. What chance does she have if her family won't stick up for her?" Marcus thinks and says he sees where Todd's coming from. More fool him, I say. I still don't believe Todd.

At the bistro, Nick's getting angry. Leanne's trying to tell him to be careful what he wishes for - if he saw Gail's face he'd know this isn't what she wants. He's guilt-tripped her into agreeing with him. "The ends justify the means!" snaps Nick.

Kal and Dev are in the park. Just listening to the list of exercises coming up seems to give Dev chest pains. - travelling lunges pulling a tyre, squats with a medicine ball, press ups, sprints between cones, burpees and then some boxing. As Dev tries to drag the heavy tyre, he doesn't see Maria, Liam and Ozzie in the park.

At the factory, Sean and Izzy try to cheer up Julie. Izzy tells her that Brian loves her "in his own lily-livered, cowardly-custard way." Julie says she was single for a long time and knows people can smell desperation. Maybe that's what Brian did. Brian arrives just at the wrong moment, carrying a bouquet of lilies. Julie tells him to get out, "and take your peace lilies and your white lies with you!"

Dennis looks like a flamenco dancer as he claps his hands in the bistro to check out the acoustics. Gloria wants everything to be perfect for their VIP - which comes as a surprise to Stella, who didn't know they were expecting one. Gloria explains they're planning something that will really raise the place's profile . . . though they haven't mentioned it to Nick and thought maybe Stella could do that. "Ritchie" (Robin Aswith - former confessing window cleaner and previously Hans Brinker, as some of us remember) arrives and Dennis and Gloria go into fawning mode. Stella shakes her head.

Back in the factory, Izzy and Sean urge Julie to take a break to talk to Brian. They say they'll cover for her with Sally.

Kal has to help Dev out of the car, much to Sophie's amusement. He tells Dev to shower and change and he'll meet him in the bistro for a beer. He explains to Sophie that a few beers a week won't harm Dev's training and it's a matter of balancing stick and carrot.

Brian and Julie are on Maxine's bench. Julie just has one question: What did Brian have for breakfast. He says he had scrambled eggs and toast and confesses he had butter on the toast. That's all Julie needed to know. It's over. She explains that she was too distraught to eat breakfast. Brian pleads his case. He loves her more than words can say but he doesn't want to foster children. He doesn't even want to teach them anymore. Julie gets a message that Sally's on the warpath. She heads back to work. Behind her, Brian calls out that the clock's ticking. He urges her to meet him in Roy's Rolls, "our favourite table - I'll be waiting." Julie keeps walking.

Kylie is home. She demands to know exactly what Nick said to David. David's gone. "Ah, result!" says Nick. Kylie tells Nick and Gail that David said he was having one last pint. Nick thinks he was playing mind games. Kylie tells them about David standing on a cliff considering jumping but Nick says she doesn't know he really did that - it's just a story he told her later. Audrey pipes up and tells them that David's farewell was as if he wasn't going to see her again. Nick refuses to believe them. David hasn't got the guts, he says.

David approaches a police station and goes inside. "I want to report a crime," he says.

The end of episode one.

Nick is explaining to Audrey, Gail & Kylie that it had been his suggestion that David hand himself in to the police if he had been serious about wanting to make amends for his actions, but never thought he would really do it. Gail is horrified, figuring her son would end up in jail, but Kylie is sure it is just a plan to wind them all up, that he would never actually do it. She wants them to do nothing, as she figures it is exactly what David wants, everyone running after him giving him attention. Gail challenges her on how she will feel if he ends up in jail. "Good riddance!" spits Kylie. Gail is angry, and tells Nick it is all his fault for goading David, and tells him that if he ends up in prison, she will never forgive him.

There is a business meeting going on at the Bistro between Dennis, Gloria and Ritchie, and Dennis is asking Ritchie if he thinks he can get the boys to agree to play at the Bistro. He tells them he is not sure as it's not much of a venue to entice them. Gloria assures him they sometimes get celebrities in there, like David Beckham - Ritchie is surprised at this, and so is Gloria, truth be told, she just found it tripping off her tongue. Dennis assures him they can add tables to get more punters in. Ritchie says he will do it, as he can't resist Gloria's charms.

Rita and Mary arrive, much to the annoyance of Gloria, who rather wants the men to herself. She does her darndest to let her know she isn't wanted, but Ritchie suggests they join them, and to keep an eye on Dennis, Rita sits down.

Back in the Bistro, Dev is singing Kal's praises to Leanne, telling her he is an absolute miracle worker. It comes out in conversation that he used to do rehab work, but is now making far more money training the Botox and boobs brigade. Leanne tells him it's a shame, because she knows someone he might have been able to help.

Julie has shown up at Roy's Rolls to meet Brian. He tells her he wants to talk things through before he makes the final decision on the job in Wales. He apologises for not being truthful about his feelings on fostering, but didn't want to hurt her. Launching into a sales pitch, he waxes lyrical about how idyllic life could be for the two of them in Wales. He promises her a little cottage with roses round the door, and she will be able to make jam and bake for bake sales. She sadly tells him it would be even more idyllic with a couple of kids fighting over who should lick the bowl. He asks if he is not enough for her, and she tells him he is - almost, but her need for children is overpowering, and she knows it would destroy them.

Eva comes into the Rovers and spots Kylie knocking back the drinks. sitting down with her, she asks which sorrows she is drowning, but Kylie tells her she is celebrating because David is finally leaving. Eva tells her that juggling two kids and a job as a single parent is hardly something to be celebrating, but Kylie figures it's better than juggling three kids and a job, which is what she was doing before.

Speaking of the devil, we now go back to the police station where David is still waiting to spill his guts. He asks again how much longer he will have to wait before he sees someone, but is given short shrift. Then, who should walk in the door but Nick. When David asks why he is there, Nick tells him he is there because he made it perfectly obvious to Kylie what his intentions were, and was only doing it for the effect, knowing someone would chase after him and stop him.

David turns away, saying what he is doing is hard enough, without him being there. Nick joins him in the waiting room, asking him why, if he is sincere about it, he didn't do it before. David tells him it was because he was a coward, and didn't want to do it all the time there was a chance of getting his family back, but he knows now he never will, so wants to do the right thing, and prove to everyone he isn't a coward.

Brian and Julie are still talking. They both agree they were made for each other, and really don't want to split up. Julie asks if they could possibly meet in the middle, she will agree to move to Wales if he agrees to foster. He tells her it's not that simple. She reminds him he had been happy when she was pregnant, and he agrees, but tells her he was scared too. She brushes this aside, saying that's normal, everyone gets scared, but once the child is there, everything works out. He tells her that would have been different, because that child was their own. She assures him that after a very short time he would bond with a child just the same as he would one of their own. She is on a roll now with her own selling job, telling him she understands he has had enough of kids at Bessie Street, but that is different, it is teaching. Once he takes the job in the museum he will be re-energised, and she promises he will make a smashing dad. He looks unhappy, and tries to interrupt, but she pushes on, telling him she knows his confidence is knocked because the agency turned them down, but they can appeal, or find another agency. Brian interrupts her there, and finally comes clean about the reason this agency turned them down. It was because he had told them he didn't want to foster. If he had slapped her across the face, Julie couldn't look more shocked and devastated.

David really wants to get this over with, and goes up to the desk once again. This time though, Nick grabs his arm and pulls him away, telling him he will not let him do it. He tells him he can't do it to Gail, as she has been through enough, but David points out it has nothing to do with her, it's between the two of them. They stand arguing, with Nick telling him he is still really angry with him for what he has done to his life. David agrees, saying all Nick's problems are his fault, and this is why he should now pay for it. Right on cue, the desk sergeant calls over that the person he needs to speak to can see him now.

Julie is running from the cafe in floods of tears, with Brian chasing after her. She asks him how he could have done it, taken the thing most precious to her and smashed it to pieces. He tells her he didn't mean to, but she rounds on him, saying of course he meant to, he was thinking only of himself, just as he was when he had the vasectomy. Their whole relationship has been based on lies. He protests that he only lied to protect her feelings, and because he was terrified of losing her. Julie tells him she knows exactly why he did it, it was because it was what he wanted - end of story. He tries turning the tables on her, saying she hadn't exactly been open to compromise, she had wanted kids, and wasn't prepared to stop until she got them, he goes on to say that when he had the vasectomy, it should have told her how he felt about having them. "No Brian! It was you who should have told me!" screams Julie. With that, she flounces off, telling him she can't bear to look at him.

David and Nick are walking out of the police station, and David is telling him he shouldn't have stopped him. Nick tells him he did it for their mother, he doesn't give a stuff about him. Gail, who had been waiting outside with Audrey throws her arms around David in relief. She tells him she wouldn't have been able to take it if he had gone to prison. He replies that he still needs to pay for what he did. Gail tells him he has lost his family, and she thinks that is payment enough.

David asks her what is next, does he just disappear then? She tells him they should just get away from the police station, then they can talk about it. An angry Nick tells them to enjoy their family reunion, but not to expect him to be part of it.

Marcus is meeting Maria from work, and she asks if he sorted things out with Todd. He tells her he could see his point after they had talked, Julie is his aunt after all. Maria is not feeling so charitable though, and tells him it didn't give Todd the right to drop him in it.

In the Rovers a tearful Julie is filling Jason, Sean and Todd in on what has just taken place between herself and Brian. Todd tells her he feels bad at starting off such a chain of events, but she assures him he did the right thing, because it is far better she knows what he is really like. Maria overhears the conversation, and tells Marcus that Todd probably did the right thing after all, and Marcus agrees. Todd invites them to join himself and Julie at a table, saying he thinks Julie could probably use a bit of female support. They agree, but as they move away, Todd is looking Marcus up and down appreciatively - oh dear.

The meeting is still going on in the Bistro, and Ritchie is telling them he used to be pals with Eric Clapton when he was part of the Yardbirds, that they used to smoke rollups together. Mary, who is quite smitten with Ritchie chirps that they have something in common then. Looking surprised, he asks her if she smokes rollups. But she doesn't, she tells him she also knows Eric Clapton, they write to each other - or rather she writes, and he sends the odd photograph - signed of course. :-))

Getting back to business, a date for the gig is set for next Friday. Mary tells Ritchie, leaning closely, she will be there, in the front row. Looking as if he can't get away fast enough, he tells them he has to be going. Afterwards, Dennis hugs Gloria in delight, saying he feels ten years younger. Gloria remarks that if that is what a hug can do, maybe he should try a kiss. Feeling the daggers in her back, she turns to Rita and tells her she was only joking, but Rita is obviously not finding it very funny.

Glo tells Dennis it is the 60's theme that will draw them in, and suggests people come in costume. Mary is all excited now, she thinks she might come as Mary Quant - or possibly Twiggy (Now that would be a stretch - or should I say, a shrink!) Gloria tells them she thinks she still has her go-go boots somewhere. "Really?" smirks Rita, "I would have thought your wardrobe was more 50's Gloria". Without hesitation, Gloria's come back is "Still beats you by a decade!"

Maria and Marcus are doing their best to cheer Julie up. Maria tells them about being on the Red Rec that afternoon with Ozzy, when they spotted Dev doing his exercises, pulling a tyre along with his waist. Apparently, the moment he was let off the leash, the black beauty made a beeline for Dev's tyre, grabbed it in his teeth and decided to have a tug-o'war with him. Everyone found this hilarious except for Julie, who is not finding anything to smile about at the moment. She brings the conversation down by describing Brian as a Greek god, who was only in fancy dress, and who didn't really love her at all. She then bursts into tears, telling them she still loves him with all her heart. Her whole world has fallen apart, and all she can see ahead for herself is years of being a shrivelled up old spinster. Maria tells her not to be daft, she is still young, and there are plenty more fish in the sea. "But they are not called Brian", wails Julie. "They might be." quips Todd, to the amusement of Marcus, who fights to keep a straight face.

Leanne is telling Nick about talking to Kal about helping him. Nick is angry, and feels he doesn't need any help. Kal asks him if it's because he is enjoying all the attention, and being looked after by his wife. This angers Nick, and tells him he doesn't enjoy being like he is, can't run upstairs without being out of breath, and unable to remember his own name half the time, what makes him think he would be capable of running around a gym? Kal tells him the first guy he helped had had his arms blown off, the second had no legs for the same reason, and as it looks to him as if Nick has the full set, he can't see why he couldn't. With that, he throws his card on the bar, telling him to give him a call if he changes his mind. Nick looks at the card thoughtfully.

Eva is sitting down at Kylie's table and gives her a non-alcoholic drink, saying she has had more than enough alcohol. Kylie is bemoaning the fact that she used to have loads of friends and a life until she met David, then she threw it all away, and for what? Eva can't believe what she is hearing, and reminds her she swapped it for two gorgeous kids for a start. Kylie moans that she has been left holding them too, when they were supposed to be a family. Eva quietly tells her that maybe she should have thought about that before she slept with Nick. Kylie defends herself, saying the troubles they are having are not down to her, that Eva has no idea of the things David has done. Eva asks her if it really matters, and she replies that it definitely does matter, because her life is in ruins because of David.

Eva tells her straight that from where she is sitting, her life looks pretty good, she has a lovely house, two gorgeous kids, and she would kill for a bit of that. Kylie softens a little, saying she never thought she would take to being a mum, but she loves her kids to bits. "Right," says Eva. "Then stop feeling sorry for yourself, and get home to them!"

Audrey pulls up outside No. 8 with Gail and David. He asks what happens now, does he just pack his bags and leave? Gail tells him it was never what she wanted. He reminds her it isn't up to her though, it is up to Kylie and Nick. Gail tells him they have to keep trying to put the family back together, she will not be forced to choose between her two sons. She goes on to tell David that the fault is not all his, and that she is happy for him to go on staying at Audrey's if she is willing. She is, and David is grateful. She gets out of the car, and David jumps out asking if he can see the kids just for a minute. She tells him no, he should just go home with his Gran, and they will talk more tomorrow. With that, she hugs him. (Right, so Audrey is in the car, Gail & David just got out of the car, Nick flounced off somewhere and Kylie is in the pub. Who is looking after the children? We can only hope Leanne stepped up to the plate)

Of course - at that very moment, Kylie comes out of the Rovers, saying to Eva she is right, it's not the same this time, because she has a family to support her in raising the children. Or at least she thought she had! She has spotted Gail with her arms around David, running over, she is screaming like a banshee at Gail, she figures it was all a trick by David to worm his way back into the family. She ends by telling Gail she can have her precious son, and she can have the kids as well, because she is out of here! With that, she marches off, with Eva running behind her.

Til next week, when I guess we will be discussing the gig of the ancient rockers! :-)

Monday 16 December

Written by John Kerr Directed by Audrey Cooke

Peter and Carla are back from honeymoon. Rob comes across the road to hug her in greeting and they exchange a few words. Peter sends Carla upstairs, suggesting they get the luggage in first before checking in at the factory. Steve is intrigued as Carla has teased Peter about wearing a sarong (Bali, it's something you do there!) and asks what you wear underneath. Peter declines to answer, paying Steve for the cab ride. Steve slopes off, singing "Swing Low tiny chariot"

Kylie has come in after being out for a walk, she says, but really she's hung over and didn't come home. She'd stayed with a mate. She thanks Gail for minding the kids. Gail is distinctly unimpressed by Kylie's acting out. She defends herself by saying she only wanted to keep her son and castigates Kylie for her angry and self pity. Boring!

Jason offers to clean in the living room and asks Sean and Todd to do the washing up. He wants it spic and span before Eileen gets back. She's been on holiday too. Julie comes downstairs, having stayed over in Eileen's bed. She's a mess and is heartbroken. Sean has already called in sick for Julie and says he'll spend the day with her as he has the day off. She's determined to learn from the experience. I think it will be a steep learning curve. Just then, Eileen arrives, early, and is shocked at the state of the house. Julie collapses into Eileen's arms in tears. So much for the strong woman she thought she could be after this hard lesson.

Over to the factory now, Beth is musing about Craig hitting puberty and expects to be dealing with his raging hormones any day now. Sally comes out of the office to hurry them along. She gets a load of grief from Beth for her efforts. The newlyweds arrive. Sally says she's had a few disciplinary issues but overall, it went well. Carla has a gift for Sally. Peter lifts Carla up to cross the threshold of the office!

Nick has picked out a Christmas tree for outside the Bistro. Leanne and Stella are assessing it's proper stance. Is it leaning? Kal comes jogging through. Nick apologizes for his previous ill nature and says maybe training might be good for him. They arrange to meet up later. Gail comes over to admire the tree. Nick is snarky to her.

In the garage, Tina comes by to see Tyrone at the garage. He mentions he is going to buy Fiz's Christmas present and tells her that it's a food blender. Tina reacts as you might expect most women to react but she eyes Peter coming out of the factory for a cig so doesn't manage to tell Tyrone what a bad idea a kitchen appliance is for a pressie. She runs over to ask how the honeymoon was. Peter keeps walking away from her, saying he's got to see Simon. Tina needs to talk, it's important. He declares his marriage is, too. Forgive Tina, she's skeptical. He brushes her off.

In the Kabin, Mary is picking out some bonbons for herself. Rita scowls while hearing Gloria and Dennis laughing in the back. Mary enthuses about Ritchie's gig. Rita is scathing about it. Mary wants to be in the loop for when the gig date is set. Gloria comes out and criticises Rita for raining on their parade. She and Dennis make arrangements to meet at the Bistro later and leaves. Rita continues to be sarcastic. Dennis is excited about the gig. Rita says she is excited for him (really???) but cautions him not to get too carried away. He's past that now, it's rock and roll, you can't play it safe (says the 70+ year old!)

Steve is in the pub, telling Liz about the happy couple while Tina looks distinctly uncomfortable to hear how loved up they were in the cab. Liz sends him to the cellar, noticing how quiet Tina's gone. She can tell Tina's mood is because Peter's back but Tina assures Liz she cares nothing for Peter. Liz can tell different.

In the cafe, Anna's clearing tables when Hayley returns with Roy after a driving lesson. He doesn't seem too happy with his progress and goes upstairs. His test is Friday. Hayley tells Anna she might be putting Roy under too much pressure.

Brian is looking glum in the pub. Marcus tries to avoid him but Brian uses a passive aggressive bout of moaning and self pity to draw Marcus into a conversation. Brian feels pretty badly about ruining things with Julie but Marcus figures Julie is feeling pretty awful too. All Brian can say is that he'll miss Julie. Marcus says Julie might be persuaded to take him back. She's got a big heart, after all. The factory girls come in with Carla, all giggling. There's more teasing of Carla for being loved up. Tina is in the corner looking surly. Carla calls over to Tina who replies she's fine.

Back in the factory, Carla is showing Michelle their photos on the camera. Peter comes in just as his phone goes off. He picks it up and cancels the call, looking out of sorts. He tells Carla he's got a bit of a headache so she urges him to go home early. She'll finish up there and will be home in a couple of hours. He finally agrees and leaves but not before Michelle can tease him about a photo of him in his swimming trunks. He laughs that Carla was supposed to delete that. She teases him that she is keeping it as evidence in case he's thinking of running off with another woman (ooops!)

Kylie is still looking like 50 miles of rough road over at Platt Towers. Gail returns to a very untidy room, littered with plates and tea mugs. She hollers at Kylie for the mess in the house and the mess of her own self. It's not all about her, she's got children to be responsible for and she has to move on. Kylie says she can't.

Julie and Eileen, arm in arm, followed by Sean and Todd, also arm in arm, are all listening to Julie pour her heart out. They approach Number 11 as Eileen is in mid-insult about the man who toddles over just at that minute. He wants a private word with Julie but the support team refuses to leave. He says he knows he's behaved badly but doesn't want them to end not talking. He wants to make amends but she's not having it. He leaves, tail between his legs.

Leanne seems to be finding out about the gig for the first time and isn't happy she and Nick weren't consulted. Dennis is taken aback while Gloria tries to convince her it won't be a big deal. She promises to think about it. Rita arrives, possibly to crash the meeting though stops to talk to Stella about the gig at the bar. She reiterates her previous remarks about not wanting Dennis to get too carried away. Stella wonders how bad can one night be? Kylie comes clomping in to work, late. Leanne hollers at her and Gail comes in behind her. She tells Kylie they're going to sort out the problems tonight once and for all, Nick included.

Mary comes into the cafe for a word with Roy. Anna passes her over. He doesn't seem inclined to talk, ignoring her hints and throat clearing. Finally he comes over with a glass of water for her cough. She invites him to play a chess match. He politely turns him down. She doesn't push it and goes. Hayley comes in asking how he is and cautions him that not everyone passes the first time. He shouldn't be upset if he doesn't. It matters to him, he avers.

Leanne has told Nick that Gail is calling a family meeting. Gail was really angry and Leanne points out that it's not just about him, David and Kylie, there are children to be considered. He looks thoughtful.

Peter is making a coffee in the flat. Carla returns home a little early, having left Sally in charge. She's come home for a canoodle but notices he's a bit distracted. He says he's having a bit of a reality check after a lovely week with her. He would love it if he didn't have to let her out of his sight. They start making eyes at each other and snog passionately.

Tracy comes into the pub with Rob, mithering him about not treating her like an equal partner though he says he always does. Tina serves them and when she asks what they want, Tracy snaps at her then decides she is leaving after all. Rob stays put and orders just the pint. He asks Tina why she uncharacteristically took Tracy's gobby remarks. Tina says she's got things on her mind. Michelle arrives in the pub, Tina overhears her say that Peter went home with a headache while Carla stayed at the factory (she doesn't know Carla went home early). Tina's radar goes up so asks if she can go on her break. Over by the dartboard, Marcus is playing arrows with Tyrone and sensibly has told Tyrone that a food processor is definitely not what Fiz wants to see under the tree from her beloved.

Carla and Peter are staggering to the bedroom just as the door buzzer goes. It's Tina who's buzzing and knocking. They are determined to ignore it but since Tina won't go away, Carla gets annoyed and runs down to answer the door. She apologizes for shouting at the door before she'd known who it was. Tina looks shocked to see her and a top-naked Peter behind her.

Carla and Peter open the door to Tina wearing not much more than their dressing gowns and a couple of awkward expressions. Quick as a flash Tina says she thought she saw some kids trying to break into their car. Carla has a quick check but no kids are in sight so she reckons Tina must have scared them off. Tina then makes out she called round to see if they want help with Simon over the holidays. Completely oblivious to the looks passing between Peter and Tina, Carla insists she comes up to the flat for a drink.

Across the street, Brian has gone round to speak to Julie but when Eileen opens her front door she sends Mr. Packham packing. She tells him Julie doesn't want to see him. After he's gone Julie tells Eileen she didn't need to be so mean. "I give up," sighs Eileen.

Dennis and Gloria have been making plans in the Bistro. He says he really ought to go home but she insists that he stays and shares a bottle of wine with her. "Leanne won't mind," she says but Stella's face tells a different story as would Rita's if she could see the way Gloria's flirting with her husband.

Brian is moping in the corner. Steph goes to take his order and he says he's pondering hemlock. "I'm not sure if we do that," she says, about to go off and check. Brian makes do with a glass of red wine.

Meanwhile, round at Peter and Carla's, Tina is being treated to looking at their honeymoon photos on Carla's phone. Carla offers her some advice: when she meets the right fella - which she will, she insists - she shouldn't stint on the honeymoon. Carla goes off to get dressed, leaving Peter to ask Tina why she really came round. "What do you want?" he asks. Tina tells him to forget it as she flounces out.

Sean, Todd, Marcus, Jason and Eva are enjoying a drink together in the Rovers. Todd asks: if you could change one thing about your partner, what would it be? Eva says nothing because Jason's perfect. "Whatever she says," replies Jason. Marcus says he'd change Maria's smile because it's perfect and once you've seen it you can never enjoy a sunset again. This causes the men in the group to feel distinctly nauseous, as well it might.

Hayley is decorating the Christmas tree. Roy, as always, is worried she's overdoing it but his suggestion that she sits on the sofa and directs operations while he hangs the baubles earns him a bit of a look. Roy wisely says that he'll untangle the lights and stop fussing.

Carla and Peter are lying on the sofa together discussing how to spend their evening. She suggests the Rovers followed by a takeaway but Peter says he's not in the mood for the pub. But Carla says this will give her the chance to have a word with Tina. Peter asks why and looks decidedly worried when Carla replies that it's for her to know and him to find out.

Round at PMT Towers, Nick, Audrey and David are waiting for Gail to return but when she comes in she's alone. She tells them that Kylie refuses to come in. So Audrey goes off to see if she can persuade her. Nick is extremely uncomfortable at the whole idea of getting together but Gail insists that this gets sorted tonight.

In the Bistro Dennis is telling Steph about the band they have booked. He says they were a bit before her time but when she hears that their biggest hit got to number 13 back in 1965 she says it sounds more like before dinosaurs' time. While this is happening, Eileen comes in with Julie. Seeing Brian sitting in the corner she tells her sister that they'll go to the Rovers instead but Julie and Brian look at each other across the room and Julie tells Eileen she'll catch her up. "I can't even be bothered," sighs Eileen, leaving them to it.

Out in the street, Audrey finds Kylie sitting on a bench with a can of lager. Kylie doesn't want any part of a family conference, believing she's just a spare part as far as Gail is concerned. But Audrey tells her she couldn't be more wrong and says that, as the mother of Gail's grandchildren, she's a very important part of their family. "Alright!" announces Kylie, jumping to her feet. "If Gail wants a summit, I'll give her summat!"

Eileen has joined Todd, Marcus and co. in the Rovers. She tells them about Julie staying to talk to Brian. She comments that if Julie had any brains she'd be dangerous and says that she's made her bed so she can lie in it. "Hopefully not with Brian," says Todd. Marcus jokes that Todd's a bit of a troublemaker.

Over by the bar Carla reveals why she wanted to see Tina. She hands her a present and explains to Rob and Michelle who are standing with them that it's to thank her for stopping some kids from breaking into her car earlier. Michelle is surprised Tina didn't mention it. Tina looks awkward, as well she might. She opens the gift. It's a sarong, just like the one she admired in Carla's honeymoon photos earlier.

In the Bistro Brian tells Julie that he's taken the job in Wales and he's leaving in a couple of days. "So this is really goodbye," says Julie. Brian tells her it doesn't have to be and that he always wanted her. But Julie says he only ever wanted part of her, the part that doesn't feel incomplete and lost. She tells him that there's a better Julie out there, a happy Julie, a complete Julie and she's not going to find her in Wales.

Dennis and Gloria have finished their bottle of wine and, pecking her on the cheek as he goes, Dennis finally returns home to Rita. After he's gone, Stella comments that the two of them seems to be getting very pally. Gloria says she can't help it if Dennis finds her more amusing than 'her ladyship' and she's not going to apologise for having a laugh. Stella says she just hopes Rita will see the funny side of it.

Everyone has finally gathered for Gail's family conference but Kylie, as usual, thinks it's all about her. David says that she may not want him to be her husband but asks if she can at least let him be a dad to Max and Lily. Nick says that he's not sure why but for some reason Max adores David. Kylie immediately assumes that this means Nick is on David's side. He says he's not but that he's on Max and Lily's side. He says that he may have lost his chance to be a father to Simon but that he wouldn't wish that on his worst enemy. "Even if he is my brother," he adds with meaning, looking straight at David. Eventually Kylie slams down her can of lager and says she's done arguing. Surprised, David asks if this means he can now see the children. Kylie says yes but never on his own and never with her in the house.

Carla and Peter are now sitting with Todd and co. Carla sends Peter up to the bar to get the next round but Tina serves Rob first. When he points out Peter was before him Tina replies that he said please and shoots Peter a dirty look.

Hayley and Roy are putting the finishing touches to their Christmas tree. Hayley asks Roy to put Hope's home-made angel on the top. He's reluctant in view of its religious symbolism but Hayley tells him she's just trying to decorate the tree, not convert it. Hayley comments wistfully that she loves Christmas before wincing and asking Roy for another painkiller, an all-too-sad reminder that this is likely to be her final festive season.

While Sean and Eva are telling Carla what it was like having Sally as a boss while she was away, Peter is distracted by the sight of Tina talking to Rob over by the bar. Well aware that Peter is watching, Tina responds to Rob's flirty chat. Unable to stand it any longer, Peter nips out the back for a smoke, giving Tina a meaningful look as he walks past. Carla goes up to the bar to buy the next round and comments that Tina and Rob seem to be having fun. "Don't they just," says Michelle as she joins them. She asks Rob if he has a death wish but he says it's just a bit of banter. Carla tells Rob that he could do worse than Tina and Michelle shakes her head in disbelief at the idea that Carla is trying to play matchmaker.

Julie arrives back at Eileen's. Eileen asks her if she's taken Brian back. "I'm heartbroken, not brain dead," replies Julie. She tells Eileen that they've found a way to say goodbye and Eileen gives her a comforting hug.

Peter is out in the smoking yard when Tina comes to join him as he knew she would. He asks her what that was all about with Rob just now and she says she can't believe he's jealous after deliberately blanking her all day. Tina is confused. Peter tells her it's complicated. He wants to have the conversation another time but Tina says he's not going anywhere until he answers some questions. She asks if he's thought about her since . you know . and Peter says no, he hasn't. "It doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it, though," he adds as if that's going to make her feel better. Tina is more confused than ever. Peter says he wants to call it quits and tells Tina that he's not good for her. She asks him to let her be the judge of that but Peter replies that he's trying to protect her. Tina wants to know why Peter married Carla so he tells her it's because he loves her and she knew what she was getting herself into. He says that he knows how this will end - he'll crash and burn and take Tina with him. She asks what if she wants to take that risk? Peter moves forward as if to kiss her but then stops and asks her to stay away from him. "Please. It's for your own good," he adds before walking away.

Wednesday 18 December

In the office at Underworld, Carla is looking forward to Christmas while Peter is distracted and thoughtful.

Over at the Platt's, Kylie comes home with a whole lot of shopping bags and is frosty with Gail who is sewing Max's sheep costume for the school nativity. Gail tries to make conversation, but Kylie accuses her of being on David's side. Gail points out that this isn't about sides, it's about two children who are caught up in the middle of it all. She asks if Kylie is still serious about David only seeing the children under supervision and wonders if she's thought about it properly. Kylie snaps at her to get off her case.

In the Kabin, Dennis is phoning round talent agents to see if anyone can come to Ritchie's gig. He's not having a lot of luck.

In the cafe, Jenna is testing Roy on the highway code. She's sure he'll be fine.

Julie and Eileen are in the cafe too, talking about Brian, he's moving out later, then she'll be able to go back to her flat.

David arrives at Gail's with presents. She is cuddling Lily and is glad to hand her over to David for a cuddle. He sees the sheep costume and offers to finish it off. She tells him she's going to go Christmas shopping later and he can look after Max and Lily.

Peter goes into the pub where Tina is working behind the bar. She asks if he can't find another pub to go and drink in, and tells Peter she can't go on looking after Simon. He doesn't know what he's going to tell Carla and Simon. She says he's a good liar, she's sure he'll dream something up.

Julie comes along the Street to find Brian putting the last of his things into a van. He points out that they are joint owners of the flat and wonders what they're going to do about it. She looks stricken, she hadn't thought about that. He tells her he'll come to Eileen's to talk about it later.

Rob and Tracy are in the pub, squabbling about their business. Tracy wants to go and meet Rob's contact who has offered to buy from them the goods they can't sell. He asks Tina for her opinion and she remarks that Tracy will get her own way, she always does. In the end Rob proves her right by giving in to Tracy and saying she can go and meet his contact.

Gail comes back from school with Max and Lily, and Max is delighted to see David in the house. Gail hands over the baby and tells him she's off out again. David is worried that Kylie will be upset and annoyed at him being left with the children and urges Gail to phone her, but Gail says that Kylie has to learn she can't lay down the law.

Norris is in the pub with Rita, Dennis and Ritchie, asking about the gig and who their fans are, what decade did they come from? He asks if the bistro has wheelchair access, and makes scathing comments about Dennis finding a career in the music business. Rita snaps that if Dennis has found a passion for something, where is the harm?

Tracy has gone off to her meeting, leaving Rob at the bar chatting to Tina who asks him if Tracy has always worn the trousers. He tells her she's a wind-up merchant, and they flirt a little.

Brian arrives at Eileen's house and Julie comes to speak to him on the doorstep. She tells him she needs more time to think about the flat. He tells her that as he has to find somewhere else to live he won't be able to afford his half of the mortgage payments. "So I have to rush a major decision, do I, so that you can ride off into the sunset?" she snaps. He suggests she buys him out, and gives her figures and percentages. She's horrified that she has been in pieces while he has been up all night with a calculator. She tells him that he has just removed all doubt about whether she is doing the right thing and takes his keys off him, saying she will let him know her decision. She shuts the door and Brian goes off to his van and drives away round the corner. Goodbye Brian.

David is playing with Max when his phone rings. While he's talking on the phone Max starts to pester to open one of his presents. David eventually agrees and Max is just ripping the paper off as Kylie comes though the door.

Rita tells Dennis that if the gig goes badly, he won't come out of it very well.

Rob is still waiting for Tracy and talking to Tina. Liz comes through from the back and sees them, and suggests Tina goes for her break. So Tina tells Rob she's going out to the smoker's yard.

Tracy arrives home to find that Rob is still out. She phones him, leaving a message saying she's got good news and hopes to see him soon to celebrate.

Meanwhile, Rob has gone outside to see Tina, he asks why she keeps winding him up, is it her way of getting his attention?

Carla is in the bar, just finishing a call to Peter. She tells Liz that he was supposed to be sorting the childminding stuff with Tina, but hasn't done it. Liz tells her that Tina is outside in the yard now, if she wants to speak to her.

Out in the yard, Tina and Rob are continuing to flirt, and end up kissing, just as Carla comes out. They try to tell her it was nothing, just a bit of messing about, but she says she's sure it was exactly what it looked like, and then goes off laughing.

Back at the Platt's, Kylie has put the kids upstairs and is having a go at David, reminding him that she wanted supervised visits only. He says that Gail has gone shopping, and Kylie can't expect her to take the two kids everywhere she goes. He says they can't go on like this, they need to learn to live together again, to be proper parents to Max and Lily. They continue to argue and eventually Kylie tells him he can forget about going to see the nativity. Just then Gail comes back in , tries in vain to calm the situation down, but Kylie ends up ordering David out.

Carla goes back home to Peter and tells him how she caught Tina and Rob snogging in the back yard of the pub. Peter is outraged, furious, then, when she remarks on his reaction, blusters that Rob is cheating on his sister. Carla says she would prefer Tina as a sister in law. Peter is not amused, so Carla, chuckling, tells him she'll stop talking about it as it's bothering him so much, but she thinks there are interesting times ahead!

Friday 20 December

It's the morning of the nativity play so we all know things won't go smoothly. Despite that, Audrey's offered to look after Lily so Gail and Kylie can go. Audrey also offers to buy the turkey for Gail to cook, which is a big surprise to Gail as she doesn't recall offering to cook the Christmas dinner. Max is already dressed in his sheep costume and Kylie follows him. Max wants David to come to see him in the play but this just makes Kylie angry. Audrey tries to suggest there's no harm in David coming but Kylie slams the door, shouting, "Fine! Do what you want! I won't be there!"

Tracy and Rob come out of the house with Rob apologising for not being home to greet her last night. Carla and Peter are also in the street and the two couple trade sneers. As they walk away, Carla tells Peter it would make her year if he told Tracy about Rob snogging Tina and then Tracy and Rob broke up.

In the cafe, Roy's preparing to go off and face his driving test. Hayley comes down to give him a card. Everyone tells him good luck.

In the salon, Audrey's going on about Kylie dictating to everyone. David says he doesn't want to push her because she could easily move away and take Max and Lily with her. Audrey points out he can go to the nativity play now but David points out that Nick and Leanne will be there and he's not their favourite person, either. Audrey says she'll have a word with Nick about it, for the sake of the children. Kylie bursts in and demands that Audrey look after Lily as agreed. She says she's not going to the nativity but she is going into town to get Max a different present. David tries to talk to her about Max wanting him in the audience but Kylie just ignores him completely.

Carla comes into the cafe and sees Tina so takes the chance to tease her about kissing Rob. She asks if she's going to the nativity - Simon would love to see her there. Tina agrees to ask for time off. Meanwhile, Mary's regaling Roy with horror stories about the driving test. She's not helping! And Jenna can't shut her up.

In the Kabin, Rita and Norris discuss Dennis and his "wing ding" (Norris's words). Dennis comes in, looking dashing in a fedora and scarf with a black shirt. I think he looks good but Norris says he looks like the oldest swinger in town.

David's at the school, talking to Gail about Kylie. Nick's agreed he can be there for the sake of the children but that doesn't mean Nick has to talk to him.

Kylie's on the gambling machine in the pub. Gary and Tina watch her as Rob and Tracy still bicker over his apology. Tracy goes off to the loo and Tina tells Rob how easy it would be to wipe the smile off Tracy's face. "Then neither of our lives would be worth living," Rob points out. Kylie starts to thump the machine. Tina tells her to stop and asks if Kylie's going to the nativity in that state. "Mind your own business!" slurs Kylie. She wants another vodka but Tina refuses and Kylie's reaction means Gary has to help get her outside. Tina follows with Kylie's bag. "Some people don't deserve children," Tina says. Kylie snaps that Tina gave hers away to Gary. She says she's just on her way to the nativity and she'll be the proudest mum there. She almost steps in front of a speeding taxi and Tina has to drag her out of the way.

Roy meets a very prim and proper-looking driving examiner who tells him to try to relax. He can't possibly be as bad a driver as some she's had to test.

At the school, Gail, Leanne and Nick talk about Kal and then about Audrey wanting to buy Gail a turkey to cook. Gail's not having that - if she cooks then nobody else lifts a finger to help. Leanne suggests they have Christmas dinner at the bistro - it'll be closed and everyone can help. Peter arrives. He says Carla won't be coming - she's gone to pick up Deirdre from the airport. He sees Tina arrive and is surprised. Nick says he thinks Simon's in love with Tina.

Tina talks to David. She tells him she's surprised Kylie isn't there because she said she was on her way and set out before Tina did.

Roy's told to execute a turn in the road. The examiner's slightly impatient when he doesn't, because she thinks the road is clear. But Roy's seen a cat crossing behind the car. "Well spotted," she says.

Dennis is in the bistro where a variety of blokes are loading in the band's gear. Stella's a bit annoyed - she didn't expect anything loud. Rita and Norris arrive with Mary. Dennis tells them everything's going wonderfully. Gloria's right in with the band, touching Dennis on the arm, standing close to him and Dennis calls her Glo. Rita likes none of this and when she calls Gloria Glo she manages to make it sound like a swear word.

Roy knows there's an emergency stop coming up and he's quite anxious about it. When the examiner finally does shout "Stop!" he stops so suddenly she's just about garroted by the seat belt.

Back at the cafe, Hayley, Fiz and Jenna wait for news. Carla comes in, smug at missing the nativity play. She's brought her honeymoon photos for Hayley to see. Fiz invites Hayley to go with her and the girls to see Santa.

The test is over. Roy stops the car and exhales - something he probably hasn't done for the entire test!

The audience goes into the hall. Somehow, with all the seat arranging, Tina and Peter end up sitting together. "Rob? Really?" he asks her. She doesn't want to talk about it. The children start singing "Little Donkey."

In the outer room, as a staff member clears up, Kylie staggers in. She goes into the hall, lurches down the aisle and bumps out another bloke so she can sit by David. He asks her quietly not to cause any trouble. Trouble? Kylie? She says very loudly that that's quite funny, coming from him. People start to look across at them. Max looks worried. Gail tells David Kylie's drunk and to get her out of there. "I'd like to see him try!" bellows Kylie.

At Anna's house, Owen's received a voicemail and a text message from Phelan. He wants Owen to "bring your Gary and the family" round. He wants to talk about some business.

A teacher comes over and tells Kylie to be quiet. "You're putting the children off."

Norris, Mary and Stella comment on how close Gloria and Dennis seem. Mary says they're closer in age, which, of course, riles Rita. She stomps off to hang up her coat.

Ritchie, Dennis and Glo talk about the Facebook reaction to news of the gig. Gloria talks knowledgeably about the Silver Surfers. She says none of this would have happened without Dennis and gives him a peck on the cheek. One of the musicians starts playing and it's more Hendrix than Herman's Hermits, despite Ritchie's Noone-ish face. Time for Norris to get his coat and go. He tries to take Mary and Rita with him but Rita refuses. She prefers to sit and glare at Glo. She asks Stella for a refill.

"Away In A Manger," begins and Kylie says loudly that that's nothing. Max slept in a drawer for the first three months. A teacher tries to shut her up but without success. Kylie will have to leave, the teacher says.

Simon leans over to Max and tells him not to worry. "This happens every year." [and wins the award for best line of the episode!].

Kylie storms up to the front of the hall and drags Max out of the stable. "We haven't finished yet," he says. David asks what she's doing. "Taking my son home!" she snarls.

The end of the first episode.

Sunday 22 December

Written by: Susan Oudot
Directed by: Audrey Cooke

Surprise Surprise! There was no second episode on Friday, so here I am writing it up on Sunday instead.

Poor little Max is being dragged out of his nativity play by his drunken mother. Everyone is protesting, especially Max (who incidentally looks extremely cute in his likkle lamb costume - see pic) But Kylie isn't listening, she is trying to make the point that he is her child, not David's, and what she says goes. She shouts at David that she let him see Max when she didn't have to, and what him and his family want is always more important. Yanking at Max's hand, she urges him to leave with her. The child digs his heels in, and tells her he doesn't want her, he wants David, and runs over to him. Gail tries to be the peacemaker, telling Kylie that Max is just confused. Kylie looks at David with betrayal in her eyes, saying "I trusted you", then turns on her heels and leaves alone. David wants to go after her, but his mother stops him, saying he will only make matters worse, and right now they have to let Max finish his concert.

Hayley is anxiously looking at the clock, waiting to hear how Roy made out in his driving test. He arrives home, and despondently tells her he failed. He lists off what he failed on: Ineffective observation reversing round a corner and inappropriate speeds on a main road. Hayley grimaces in sympathy, saying "too slow". Roy tells her on the contrary, he overcompensated. (Roy broke the speed limit? Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!!) Hayley is sympathetic, telling him hardly anyone passes first time, and he just needs a bit more practice, and will get it next time. He is upset because it was supposed to be her legacy, but she assures him it still will be, but should take a night off from it and come with her, Fiz, Tyrone and the children to see Father Christmas at the precinct. Roy is horrified at the thought of encouraging this crude commercialization of the festive period, but Hayley is having none of it. She reminds him he is an atheist, so why should he care, and tells him to stop being so bah humbug about it all. She tells him it's Christmas, a time for friends and family, and if that includes visiting a fat man with a white beard, then so be it! That said, she orders him to get his coat.

Anna is not happy that Owen has invited Pat Phelan round to their house to discuss the business deal he has on offer. Owen explains he didn't want to give him the satisfaction of them going round to his place, and all they have to do is listen to what he is offering. Anna is still upset about the whole thing though, she points out that the man is a lying cheat that they know they can't trust, so why even consider it? Owen tells her he is just curious. "Well, you know what curiosity did, don't you?" warns Anna.

While Hope tells Santa all she wants for Christmas, the adults and Ruby wait outside the grotto. Hayley is sitting, and looking very weary, which doesn't go unnoticed by Fiz, who suggests the men go off to do their shopping, and they will wait for Hope. Tyrone teases Fiz that they won't be long, as they only have to hit the Pound Shop for her gift. As they walk away, Roy bemoans to Tyrone about the fact he failed his driving test. Tyrone too reminds him that people rarely pass the first time, so Roy asks him if he did. He admits he did, but most people don't. (I vaguely remember Tyrone's driving test, it seems to me that his examiner had a heart attack, and Tyrone drove him to the hospital, saving his life - then when he took it again, he got the same examiner, his car broke down, and he guilted the examiner into allowing him to fix it and finish his test, which he did - and passed. So I guess he did pass first time - sort of!). Roy resolves to buy Hayley something extra special to make it up to her.

Audrey is surprised to see Kylie home so early, and she tells her she left early because of a headache. Audrey suggests she goes upstairs for a lie down, and she will stay on to look after Lily until Gail gets back. Kylie assures her she will be fine, and sends her off. Left alone, Kylie picks Lily up and cuddles and kisses her.

In Peter & Carla's flat, Tina hugs Simon, telling him he was an absolute super star in the nativity. As he goes into his room, and she moves towards the door, Peter lays into her again about Rob, telling her he is an absolute low life, and besides, Tracy is his sister. Tina tells him she is not having this conversation, and he seems just a bit too concerned about her love life. They don't get any further with it anyway because Simon reappears, and she takes off home.

Fiz is talking to Hope over at the grotto, then looks up to see Hayley sitting slumped with her head down. Rushing over, she calls her name, and Hayley wakes up, apologising for falling asleep. Hayley tells her that Roy can't understand why she loves Christmas so much, considering her childhood was as unhappy as his, but she tells her she remembers once when she was about six her father had gone to the second hand shop on Christmas Eve and bought her a fort, that he spent all night painting for her. She goes on to say she couldn't play with it for a couple of days because the paint was still wet, but she still remembers how she felt when she woke up Christmas morning and spotted it at the bottom of her bed. Fiz tells her this will be the first Christmas that Hope really knows what is going on. "Bless her", says Hayley.

Fiz asks her what she has bought for Roy, and she tells her she has 7 pairs of socks, all the same so they are easy to match, 7 pairs of underpants and 7 white vests. Not really much of a present, but are things he might need. She goes on to tell her she has also bought something rather special off the internet that she hopes he might like. Hope comes over and puts a little snow that she has picked up from the grotto in each of their hands. She is such a little sweetie.

Audrey has been shopping, and bumps into Gail and David in the Street. They are surprised to see her outside the house, so she explains about Kylie coming back, and refusing to let her stay until her headache cleared. They are horrified, telling her the headache was more likely a hangover. David rushes over to find the door locked, and tells Audrey Kylie is drunk in charge of Lily.

Gail is rummaging for her keys, while the other two are giving way to panic, which of course doesn't go unnoticed by Norris and Mary who just happen to be passing by. When they get in, Kylie is holding a screaming Lily, and she is only too happy to hand her over to David. Gail demands to know what she is doing, first upsetting Max, and now Lily. Kylie screams at her that they are her kids, and this is her house, and she can go to hell! David tells her they are just there to make sure she is OK. Kylie tells him she is, now would they all please go away and leave her alone. Gail, who is now holding a quiet Lily tells her they are going nowhere.

Pat Phelan and his wife have arrived and have brought a bottle of champagne. Anna however wants her family to keep a clear head, and tells him she will put the kettle on. Unfazed, Phelan tells her to keep it for Christmas.

Owen demands they get down to business and tell them what it is he is offering. It is a mill conversion into ten luxury flats. Owen tells him it can be tricky getting planning permission for mill conversions, but Pat tells him it's in the bag and ready to go. Owen asks why he is offering the contract to him, as they are not exactly old mates. Phelan tells him he has enough friends, he needs a man who can get things done. Still suspicious, Gary asks what the catch is, and he tells him he is bankrupt, and it is illegal for him to front the project, which is where he needs him to come in.

After more talking, they leave, asking them to think about this great opportunity over the holidays. His wife offers them to come to her nail salon if they feel like a bit of pampering. Katy tells her that would be great and thanks her, which gets her daggers from the eyes of Anna. Afterwards, Anna doesn't like the idea of this at all, saying it is one thing for Owen to be his front man, but would he be his fall guy as well? Katy is only impressed with Mrs. Phelan's handbag, saying she has seen the same one in a magazine for over £2,000. Bankruptcy doesn't appear to have curtailed his income one iota. Owen is pretty impressed with that kind of lifestyle too, saying he wouldn't mind a bit of what he obviously has.

Hayley is still sitting on a different bench now, and Fiz has managed to do some shopping. She is looking extremely weary, so Fiz tells her she has nothing to do on Christmas Day, as they are doing the dinner, and all they have to do is come over and put their feet up. Roy and Tyrone come back just them, also armed with shopping, and Hayley tells Fiz they are very kind, but she really thinks it would be better if the two of them spent the day quietly together, she adds though that they would love for them to drop by with the kids at some point if they are not too busy. They agree happily to this.

There is still a huge row going on in No. 8, with Gail telling Kylie a few home truths, like her being a silly selfish little girl who doesn't deserve those lovely kids. David suggests Gail and Audrey take the children to Grasmere Drive, but Kylie tells him in no uncertain terms that they are not taking her kids anywhere.

Over in the Bistro the gig is in full swing, with Beth and Kirkeh dancing along to the music. (We get a lovely shot of John Groom, husband of interviewed Extra Gina Sinclare, on the drums) Ritchie is belting out the tune as the lead vocalist. Over at the bar, we learn that Beth bought Kirk a denim shirt and a guitar because it makes him look dead sexy. The guitar has no strings, and he can't play, but he looks dead sexy. Dennis and Gloria are lapping it all up, much to Rita's concern, who remarks to Stella that she hopes all this has served to get it out of Dennis' system.

Over in the Rovers, Rob and Tracy are standing at the bar. Tina comes over and leans seductively across Rob on the pretense of wiping the bar. He offers her a drink, much to Tracy's disgust, and Tina moves down to the other end of the bar. Up comes Peter and gives her heck for throwing herself at Rob. He rants on, and with a smirk, she tells him he is in no position to tell her what to do. He is obviously very jealous, which of course is the object of the whole exercise on Tina's part. (I have to say here that she is wearing the most hideous outfit, long sleeved, leopard print, possibly fuzzy, loose fitting, probably three sizes too big, with an either black PVC or leather insert down the back. I always thought she would look good in a paper bag, and possibly she would, but this one should definitely have been left on the leopard!)

Roy and Hayley arrive home. She admits she has really overdone it, and just wants to head straight for her bed. Roy tells her he feels inviting them round on Christmas Day is just asking for trouble, as she is not up to it. He tells her she really needs to take care of herself, and not try to carry on as normal. Hayley points out they are past the point where it will do any good to take care of herself, and of course she wants to pretend everything is as normal as possible. She goes on to say that this isn't a rehearsal, this is it, their last Christmas, and she refuses to spend it in her nightie curled up under a duvet. Roy didn't want to hear that and looks crestfallen.

The gig in the Bistro has been a resounding success, and the till has been ringing all night. Only one not happy is Leanne, and that is because of what is going on over at the Platts. Gloria especially is pleased with the way things have gone, and suggests to Dennis they go into partnership together as managers. She suggests they take on this band, along with a few others and make a bit of money going round the pubs and clubs. This sounds like a fine idea to Dennis, then remembers he has a very disapproving wife and hesitates. Glo sarcastically says she understands he can't make the decision without getting his boss's permission, and taking the bait, he tells her he is his own man, and doesn't have to ask anyone's permission to do anything. "Excellent" says Gloria.

Looks like David won that battle, because Audrey, Gail and the children have gone now, so there is only Kylie and David left to fight - and the latter has had enough of the fighting. She is feeling very sorry for herself, and slumps onto the sofa with her head in her hands, telling him to just leave her alone. He wants so badly to reach out for her, and almost puts his hand on her shoulder, but thinks better of it, and leaves out the front door.

Rob is outside the Rovers making a phone call. Peter has followed him out, still burning with jealousy over him and Tina. He warns him off, saying once again he is looking out for his sister, and tells him in no uncertain terms to leave Tina alone. Rob is confused, asking him when he has ever cared what happens to Tracy in the past. Ignoring that question, Peter just tells him again to stay away from Tina from now on. "Have you got that?", he says, with his face two inches from Rob's. Rob doesn't say a word, just looks at him, then goes back inside, leaving Peter still shaking with anger.

Monday 23 December

Written by Simon Crowther Directed by John Anderson

Gail and David arrive home. Gail is having a good old rant about Kylie's display of self pity at the Nativity and it's probably effect on dear little Max. David can hear Kylie upstairs so she has managed to get herself home at least. Gail is embarrassed as well, due to her long association with the school. David interrupts, and Gail admits she herself isn't perfect but Kylie isn't fit for purpose. Kylie wanders down but turns around at the first of Gail's shouting and goes back upstairs, followed by David.

Carla expects Tina but Peter hasn't arranged any child care. He'd assumed Deirdre or Leanne would have him (he's now on Christmas holidays). Carla orders Peter to ring Tina to see if she's free because she needs him at work.

Kylie is dressed and apparently is going into work. She does utter a quiet apology. Gail points out there are a lot more people she needs to apologize to. Hmmm. Seems Kylie's apology was only to shut Gail up and it didn't work.

Sally's moaning about there not being a Christmas party at work this year. She wonders if it's because Peter doesn't drink so doesn't want the temptation. Tim figures they spent it all on their wedding and honeymoon. Sally's phone rings and she's all sweetness and light when finding out it's Carla who wants Sally to open up. She asks Tim if he'd like to meet her in the Bistro if they get off early. Tim doesn't reckon they will, citing all Sally's recent accusations about her bosses but she's happy enough now and says they're all right, really. Sophie comes down after Sally leaves and is on the phone to Rosie. Rosie has asked Sophie to break something to Sally gently. She tells Tim that Rosie isn't coming for Christmas because she can't be bothered. Tim says at least it's honest.

Leanne is setting up the Bistro and is unimpressed that Kylie isn't dressed up to standard. She asks if Max is ok after the trauma and reinforces the idea that Kylie shouldn't give up on herself. Nick comes out from the office and asks after Max as well. All of this is getting on Kylie's last nerve. Leanne issues a verbal warning, due to Kylie's conduct.

Dev is tucking into a big takeaway breakfast in the corner shop. Kal comes in so he quickly covers it up with the newspaper. Seems Dev swerved a workout with Kal and didn't let him know. Dev pretends he didn't know that Sophie was coming in to work. Kal spies the food and Dev tries to lie and say it's Sophie's but Kal knows differently. Dev needs to take this all seriously. He bullies Dev into going home and changing. Sophie walks in so Dev doesn't have a choice.

Michelle is making a shopping list for Christmas day groceries. Sprouts are deemed unacceptable but Steve says he loves them. He also insists on Christmas pudding, even though he doesn't like it. It's tradition! His phone goes off and it's a text from Andrea asking what kind of whiskey she should get for his dad. Michelle proceeds to tear little chunks out of Steve yet again. Steve says he's off to town shortly so he'll get the things on her list. Liz asks if he will take Amy but he puts them off, clearly lying, saying he might be buying Amy's gift. Nobody really believes it!

Carla is asking Tina about child minding. Tina tries to put her off, saying she's got shopping to do. Carla wonders if Tina has had enough of Simon but Tina denies it. She agrees to have Simon if he doesn't mind traipsing around the shops with her. Carla is happy. Tina looks perturbed.

Tim is industriously cleaning the cafe windows and warbling Christmas songs. The Croppers come out and he's told that they are going to her chemo session. Tim pretends to search for 2 quid change and his ruse works. Hayley nudges Roy and Roy allows the 2 pounds as a tip.

Carla arrives at the factory, telling Peter she'll let the workers go early that afternoon. He asks about Tina. Carla says Tina's a star and he needs to pay her a bonus and sort out if she can do more babysitting over the holidays. She says not to pressure Tina into it but to ask anyway. Girls like her don't grow on trees, Carla declares. No, they don't, Peter mutters.

After the breaks, Gail is ironing. David arrives and mentions that Kylie is still at work and making an effort. Gail wants David to write an apology to the school. What will all the parents think of them. The kids are with Audrey and Max is very quiet. David doesn't know how to explain things to Max, he can't really tell him that mummy is a nightmare.

In the pub, Steve gets the list from Michelle before he heads into town. They joke about luxury gifts and add a few more things to the list, a cd for Amy and wrapping paper for Liz.

Outside, Tim is up a ladder doing the upstairs pub windows. Sophie, now not at work again, is telling him about a Christmas dinner that is put on at a local soup kitchen for the homeless. Steve comes out exchanges a Merry Christmas with Sophie. Tim asks him to get more hot water. Steve hasn't got the effort in him and when Sophie calls him lazy, he rightly points out that Tim only lives across the road. He can get his own hot water. Tim descends and asks for his payment. This time, Steve insists Tim count out every penny of the 2 quid change. He doesn't fall for the same ruse. Steve explains that Tim has only done the windows a couple of times. He'll get his tip next year if he's still on the job. Sophie giggles.

Simon has painted Tina a picture/card of Santa. She loves it! He's not doing one for Carla because he knows Carla will bin it first chance she gets but at Tina's suggestion, he agrees to do one for Leanne and Nick. He's got red paint all over him. She sends him to get more newspaper to keep the table clean. Peter rings her, telling her he needs to speak to her about Simon's care. Tina suggests they speak in person. Her soft little voice sure indicates she expects to talk about more than just babysitting. He bites. He says she should take Simon home and meet him back at the flat in an hour. Simon returns with newspaper.

Leanne and Kylie exchange a bit of a bicker. Kal and Dev are at a table. Kal is showing Dev his progress report. He's doing ok but he's got a ways to go yet. Dev thinks he might buy a bicycle but I think it's more about the outfit than the exercise. The outfit is motivating for him. Kylie comes over to see if they need anything else. She smiles and flirts with Kal a little.

At the hospital, Hayley admits that she's been in more pain than usual. The nurse says she'll set up an appointment with the consultant.

We're in the Bistro. Tim seems a bit green about Sally's information that she's got a Christmas card from Kevin. She tells him he can look at it if he wants. Sally is looking forward to meeting Rosie at the train tomorrow but Tim breaks the news, and not very gently, that Rosie isn't coming. Sally's offended that Tim just shrugs and says he doesn't know why, can't be bothered, he guesses. Back across the other side of the Bistro, Kylie is now all over Kyle like a dirty shirt. It seems like she's a bit drunk, too. Dev asks Kylie to leave them and Leanne comes over and pulls her off to one side. She realizes Kylie has had a drink. Kylie is unrepentant.

At Peter's flat, Tina has taken her hair down so it's long and flowing and sexy. You can see where she'd like this to go. She is looking at the card Simon made her and thinking about Simon's daddy, no doubt.

Back to the Bistro where Gail and David have come in to see Kylie's ok. Leanne tells them she's been drinking. Kylie heads back to Kal and is blatantly sleazy. David makes his way over to get her away but she has no intention. She's definitely fired up and rebellious and defiant as only she can be. This is going to be trouble. David tells the men that Kylie is only trying to make a point but she doesn't know what it is. That's a red rag to a bull and Kylie then lets a very big cat out of a bag, telling Kal basically that she and Nick couldn't resist each other and when David found out, the end result was the car crash. Sally has heard, Leanne tries to pull her away but Kylie tells them all they're frightened of the truth.

We open with Kylie spilling the beans in the Bistro. Sally is all ears as a very drunk Kylie explains to Kal and Dev that she slept with Nick, David found out and made their lives a misery. "Is she saying David caused the crash?" asks Sally. Gail tries to pass it off as the mad ravings of a drunk and Nick backs her up but Sally comments to Tim that she wouldn't put it past him as she looks across at David.

At the hospital Hayley's doctor tells her she's going to do a scan to see how things are progressing. But it doesn't sound good as she wants to do it straight away.

Back on the street Leanne is tearing Kylie off a strip for talking in front of a restaurant full of people. She asks her what she's trying to achieve. Does she want to lose her job and destroy her life and everyone else's? David comes out and adds his voice to the argument but Leanne sends him back inside. She tells Kylie she needs to grow up and then marches her off to get her sobered up.

Peter goes back to his flat to see Tina who has been looking after Simon. He tells her he doesn't think she should work for them anymore because he doesn't trust himself with her. She says she doesn't trust herself either but so what? She taunts him with the suggestion that she might go and see Rob and, getting the reaction she was hoping for, tells Peter she likes it when he gets jealous. Peter says Rob is practically married so Tina replies that Peter is married and asks him how he thinks she feels. He doesn't have an answer.

Tyrone's stopped off in the Rovers for a quick drink on his way home from Christmas shopping. But he doesn't take much persuading from Jason to have another one and decides to make it a pint "seeing as it's Christmas".

Then Steve comes in laden with shopping. Michelle asks if he's seen the time and comments that it's nice of him to join them. Steve looks most put out and claims he got stuck in a revolving door for over an hour. But all Michelle and Liz want to know is if he remembered to buy the CD for Amy or the Christmas crackers.

In the Bistro Sally is trying to get the lowdown from Gail on what she overheard about David and Nick. But all Gail will tell her is that the two brothers were arguing when they had their accident and that Kylie put two and two together and made nine. We see Nick and David listening in the background as Gail insists that it was just an accident but Sally doesn't look convinced. Then Stella comes in wanting to know what's been going on. Gail tells her that Leanne took Kylie away, just like an unruly child.

Back at Peter's flat Tina still hasn't left and she's clearing up Simon's paints from earlier while Peter complains that he's already got a wife, he doesn't need her being in a mood with him as well. While Peter tries to avoid the issue by discussing childcare arrangements, Tina carries on talking about the two of them. She tells him if he doesn't want her he should just say as there are plenty more fish in the sea. "What - Rob?" asks Peter. Tina replies that she doesn't want Rob, she wants him. She puts her hands on Peter and starts to kiss him and he responds. At that moment they hear footsteps on the stairs. Peter says it's Carla and, noticing she's just got red paint all over the front of his shirt, Tina shoos him off into the bedroom to get changed.

"Caught red handed!" announces Carla as she comes into the room. Tina looks shocked then realises Carla's referring to the paint on her hands. Peter comes out of the bedroom wearing a clean shirt and talking loudly about Tina's working hours. Tina makes to leave but Carla says nonsense, it's Christmas, and insists she stays for a drink.

In the Rovers Ty is finally about to leave. Steve says quite right, why stay for another drink when you could go home to two screaming kids? Ty doesn't need much persuading when Jason suggests he has one more for the road.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the bar a very vivacious woman asks Michelle for a glass of white wine. Michelle looks somewhat surprise when the woman knows her name. She explains she's Andrea, a classmate of Steve's. "Oh, you're Andrea!" says Liz as the penny drops. Steve looks extremely awkward as Andrea chats away as it's clear she knows him very well. Andrea describes how she and Steve sit together at the back of the class making paper aeroplanes and "cling onto each other for dear life" as the two oldest members of the class by about 15 years. Meanwhile, Michelle and Liz look extremely unimpressed and stand, arms folded, in a hostile show of solidarity.

Leanne has taken Kylie back to the flat to sober her up and try and talk some sense into her. She says that her life hasn't been a bed of roses either but she's never felt sorry for herself or taken things out on Simon. Kylie deals a low blow when she says that Simon isn't even hers and she doesn't know what it's like to be a proper mum. Leanne chooses to let it go and reminds Kylie that Max and Lily love David. She asks Kylie what good it's going to do and how the kids will benefit by telling the world what David has done. Leanne reminds Kylie that it's hard for her too, having to cope with Nick. She says everyone's trying to put it behind them but the only person who won't let go is Kylie and tells her that this is her last warning.

It looks like it's going to be a quiet Christmas for Sally and Tim. First we hear that Rosie has sent a text to say she's not coming and then Sophie announces she's volunteered to help out at the soup kitchen.

Meanwhile Tina, who's enjoying a glass of wine with Carla and Peter, tells them she'll be working on Christmas day. She says she's left a present under the tree for Simon. "Did you know he has a crush on you?" asks Carla as she sits stroking Peter. "Who?" asks Tina in alarm. Carla is of course referring to Si. She goes off to have a bath, leaving Peter to see Tina out.

In the Rovers Steve is regaling Andrea with the story of how he got stuck in the revolving door while Michelle is looking daggers on the other side of the bar. "I'm glad I'd left by then," says Andrea, causing Steve to give her frantic ‘don't let Michelle hear you say that' signals.

Ty and Jason are still propping up the bar and their conversation has degenerated to discussing why Santa Claus always wears red. Ty says he really must leave now but doesn't need much persuading to stay for just one more round ...

As Peter sees Tina out of the front door they have a whispered argument. He says if Carla had turned up five minutes earlier they'd have had it. She quips that if she'd turned up five minutes later they'd have had it. "Happy Christmas," says Peter, closing the door. "Happy Christmas'" replies Tina with a smug expression on her face.

An exhausted Hayley arrives home in a taxi with Hayley. As they go in she says that she knows the treatment isn't working but Roy says they don't know that for sure and tells Hayley that they must remain positive.

Back in the Rovers, Andrea is having a chat with Liz while Michelle continues to hover in the background with a face like thunder. Sensing that she's outstayed her welcome - not that she received one from Michelle and Liz in the first place - Andrea wishes everyone a merry Christmas and takes her leave, reminding Steve not to forget his coursework. Steve turns to look at Michelle who gives him a death stare. She is not amused.

Ty and Jason finally head for home. They weave merrily along the street before arriving at Ty's front door. He asks Jason if he's ever said he loves him before insisting he comes in for a nightcap.

Anna goes round to Sally's to have a word with Tim about Faye's Christmas presents. She's still in the doghouse so she doesn't want Faye being spoiled. Sally says quite right too and then can't resist showing off that her daughter is so wonderful that she's helping out in a soup kitchen on Christmas day. When Anna asks Sophie if that's what she really wants to do rather than being at home with her family Sophie tells her that actually her mum is going to go and help out, too. Sally can't lose face so she has no choice but to go along with it.

In the back room of the Rovers, Michelle is giving Steve what for. Andrea, she explains, is nothing like Steve led her to believe. She's smart and good-looking and certainly not who she'd pictured. Steve protests that she's just a classmate and that what she looks like is irrelevant. He adds that it's what's on the inside that counts. This doesn't go any way towards appeasing Michelle.

Roy comes to tell Hayley that it's time for bed and finds her on the sofa reading Christmas cards. She shows him one from Becky and smiles at the fact that she's wished them a "fabaroo" Christmas.

Gail, David, Leanne, Nick and Stella are in the Bistro discussing what they'll do about Kylie on Christmas day. They agree they can't just exclude her from the dinner. Stella suggests they could just stick some gaffer tape across her mouth. At that moment Kylie comes in. They suggest she draws up a chair and joins them but she's not in the mood for a cosy chat. Nick tells her that her behaviour earlier wasn't acceptable so Kylie tells him he should hear what Leanne had to say about him to her. She recounts part of their conversation and says that Leanne's fed up having to put up with Nick's tantrums and she's going out of her mind. Leanne protests that it's not what she said and tells Kylie to get out. Kylie retorts that Nick's brain has gone to mush and Leanne can't handle it but says if she wants to blame everything on her then she should go ahead. "Happy Christmas, the lot of you," Kylie mutters before stomping out.

"Roll on Christmas day," sighs Gail.

Wednesday 25 December

As Simon plays on the cobbles with a remote control car, Leanne and Eva watch Nick as he tethers a large, inflatable snowman to the front of the bistro. David rushes over and asks Eva if she's heard from Kylie. Eva says she had a text from her earlier, saying she doesn't want to spoil the day for everyone. Nick asks David if he's going to be there for Christmas dinner, he needs to know how many he's catering for.

Over in Gail's house, Audrey is trying to work out what her present from Gail actually is. It seems to be a blanket with sleeves, Gail reckons it will save her a fortune in heating bills. David comes in then, and gets Audrey to take Max outside to see the snowman. He then quizzes Gail on what Kylie did and said earlier. Apparently she got up early and helped Max open his presents and then went out, saying Max would have a wonderful day with David. Although David is worried, Gail thinks it's a blessing.

Over in the cafe, Roy produces another present for Hayley. She opens it - it's a DVD of a journey along the canals of Amsterdam. Then she gives him a present - a model of the Lancashire Fusilier that he drove on their wedding day. He's delighted. They talk about the day and decide that they'd like to spend it alone together. Roy says he'll call Fiz and put her off. Just then there's a knock on the door, Hayley opens it and Rita comes in, followed by Emily, Norris, Mary and Dennis!

Over at Carla and Peter's flat, she gives him an envelope tied up in fancy ribbon. He opens it to find she's given him one percent of the business, now they have 50 percent each, making them equal partners. "Now you know that I trust you totally," she says, kissing him.

Tina is on the doorstep of Anna's house with a present for little Jake. Tim comes along to see Faye just as Gary, Izzy and the baby arrive too. Sophie and Sally come out too, and Sophie asks Tim if he could give them a lift to the homeless shelter. Sally starts trying to change her mind about going, waffling about cooking the dinner, but Sophie tells her she's not backing out now. Tim says he'll turn the oven on and cook the turkey.

Tracy, Rob and Amy arrive at Deirdre's, to be told that Eccles pulled the turkey out of the bag and dragged it round the kitchen. Tracy is horrified, but Deirdre says that the heat of cooking will kill all the germs, they'll just have to carve round the teeth marks!

Over at the bistro, Leanne, Stella and Eva are busy laying up the table. Nick comes out of the kitchen flustered, one of the ovens isn't working. Leanne asks if he's sure it's switched on at the wall. He snaps that of course he has, he's not a baby. He goes off to check the fuse. David comes in and asks Eva if she can text Kylie for him, he wants to know where she is, he just wants to be sure she's ok. Just then Gloria comes in with the tv remote control and asks Stella to show her how to put the tv on to satellite. Stella tells her to give her a hand with the table, adding that Nick wants it to be perfect. Nick walks in from the kitchen and hears this, and snaps that it's not unreasonable to want everything to be perfect for his family. Eva checks her phone and finds that Kylie has texted that she's sightseeing and sent a picture. David takes one look and rushes off.

Over in the cafe, Norris is trying on the present that he's been given - a green anorak with a fur trimmed hood which Mary pulls right over his face, much to the amusement of all present. Roy tells Hayley it's time for her nap, but she brushes him off. Rita takes the hint and says they must be going, so they all depart. Roy still hasn't phoned Fiz, and so of course the next moment there's another knock on the door and there are Fiz and Chesney with kisses and presents. Fiz tells them that Tyrone is on his way with Ruby and Hope and Jade. Roy looks very disgruntled.

In the Rovers, Lloyd is sporting festive winter knitwear that Jenna has given him, and saying he's hot. Jenna is convinced he hates it, and he protests that he doesn't. Rob comes in and asks Tina for a point. He asks Steve not to mention this visit if they all come in later. Steve mutters things about customer confidentiality and Tina looks him in the eyes and murmurs that she's good at keeping secrets. Jenna then takes her leave to go and check on dinner, telling Lloyd not to be long and not to spill beer down his new jumper. She then bursts out laughing and he realises he's been had!

Michelle comes into the bar wearing an emerald green shirt that Steve has given her. (I have to say it's buttoned up to the neck and looks most un-Michelle-like.) She says she loves it. Steve tells everyone how he saw it in a shop window while walking down the street and knew Michelle just had to have it.

David is still looking for Kylie. He walks across a bridge over the canal and sees Kylie sitting on the other side just staring at the water.

Back in the cafe the festivities continue, with Fiz talking to Hayley as Tyrone, Sinead and Chesney entertain the babies. Roy then thanks everyone for coming - in other words dropping a big hint that it's time to go. Hayley protests that the children are all playing quietly. Roy tells her she needs to eat, so Tyrone suggests they all go to his house, he's got plenty. Hayley reckons they have more room in the cafe, so although Roy initially protests that she should take things easy and reminds her that they had agreed on having a quiet day, he eventually offers to cook for everyone.

David takes his jacket off and puts it round Kylie's shoulders, and sits down beside her. He urges her to come and have dinner with them all, but she reckons they will all have a better time without her. He tells her they can all have a nice family Christmas. She tells him that Lily is family, she is just the horrible wrapper that she came in. David tells her that the rest of them don't see what he sees, they see someone kicking off all the time to get a reaction. She asks what he sees. He tells her he sees hurt, someone trying to make a mess of things to match what's going on on the inside. He knows because that's what he does. He urges her to think about where she wants all this to end, it doesn't have to get worse if she doesn't want it to. She can still decide to change it, like he did. Over the last few days he's begun to think he can look Nick in the eye again. She stares at him, then snaps that they have talked this to death and she's not going over it again. Shrugging off his coat she jumps up and strides away.

Nick comes out of the kitchen asking Gail to ring David or the meal will be ruined.

Sophie and Sally are serving dinner in the homeless shelter. "Isn't it wonderful to see their grateful faces," says Sally patronisingly. Sophie is horrified but before she can say much a girl comes up to the counter, all stroppy attitude and asks for "three potatoes, dinner lady!" Sally is shocked and refuses to serve her. The girl then asks if she's supposed to be grateful for some manky veg and off trifle. "It's not off," protests Sally. The girl says she can smell it, and urges Sally to have a sniff. As Sally bends towards the trifle the girl pushes her head down, Sally gets up with a face covered in cream. The lady in charge orders the girl, Maddie, out of the queue, and Sophie collapses in giggles at the sight of Sally's white, creamy face. When Sally has gone off to clean herself up, the other lady tells Sophie that Maddie has been living rough for a couple of years, she's not had the best chance in life, through no fault of her own. Sophie says she'll take her dinner over.

David has followed Kylie and meets up with her on the bridge. He tells her she's not just the wrapper Lily came in, she's her mum and she's Max's mum as well. He asks her again to come for Christmas dinner. She says everyone will be waiting for her to wreck everything. He tells her to prove them wrong. She doesn't answer, so he walks off.

The Barlows are all around the table, Deirdre asks Rob to put the turkey on the table while she goes off to get Carla's present. Carla unwraps it, it's a gold coloured sugar bowl that Deirdre has made! Peter then tells them how he got the other one percent of the business as his present, so now they are equal partners. Tracy looks less than delighted to hear this.

In the bistro, they are all sitting round the table. Nick gets up to say a few words when David walks in and sits down. Nick says he feels the worst is behind them now, and proposes a toast. Max turns to David and asks if his mummy is coming. David has to say that he doesn't know.

In the cafe, Roy and Tyrone are clearing up, while Hayley sits looking tired. Fiz takes this as her cue to get everyone to leave. When they've gone Hayley slowly and painfully gets to her feet. Roy suggests she goes upstairs and gets into her nightie. But Hayley is planning a visit to the Rovers later, she says she doesn't want the day to end.

Sophie is talking to Maddie, who is telling her something of her background, but doesn't like it when Sophie says she felt sorry for her, and turns all sarcastic. Sally calls Sophie away, saying that she shouldn't talk to Maddie, she's just rewarding bad behaviour. She then decides to ring Tim and tell him to take the turkey out of the oven, but when she looks for her bag, that she left (stupidly in my opinion) on the counter, it has gone!

Festivities are continuing at the bistro when suddenly Kylie walks in. Nick gets flustered that he has taken her place away, and shouts at Leanne to get her a plate. Leanne however, is having fun with crackers and doesn't move. In the kerfuffle glasses get knocked over too and Nick gets more and more upset until he finally snaps and slaps Leanne across the face!

Part two will follow shortly, many thanks to Margaret!

Hello. Continuing with the Christmas Day episode. . .

Everyone stops dead, then Leanne flees, followed by Stella, who has grabbed some ice. Gail and Audrey try to comfort Nick, who is very shaken, to a background noise of Gloria going on and on and on about Nick's head injury not being a licence to do whatever he wants. David's watching all this, chewing his nails so hard it's a wonder he's not down to the bone. Then he turns and leaves the bistro. Kylie follows.

He tells her that just when they think everything's quietened down and settled, here it all goes again. If Nick's brain damage is permanent then every Christmas is going to be like this. Every birthday. Every time they're all together. He rounds on Kylie and blames her - if she was going to cheat on him, why did it have to be with Nick? Kylie tells him he can sort the kids out "because I am gone!"

It's all Christmas cheer in the pub, apart from Lloyd deliberately trying to say things that will get Steve into trouble with Michelle (still looking lovely in her new green blouse). She leaves the bar. Then Andrea arrives. Steve says he thought she'd be stuff her gob with turkey. A look of panic comes over Tim's face and he's off! Lloyd is quite taken with Andrea and demands an introduction. Andrea says she's escaping the family. She said she was taking the dog for a walk but she's left it in the shed with a marrowbone.

Peter arrives bearing gifts. Well, one from Simon for Tina. Simon quite fancies Tina and he's not the only one, Peter tells her in a low voice. She snatches the gift and tells Peter to go home.

Kylie arrives and demands a vodka and orange. Tina refuses to serve her unless she says "please" but Kylie's in no mood to be polite. Liz intervenes and serves her.

Leanne's back in the main part of the bistro, clearing up and she doesn't want any help. Gloria's still going on . . . and on and on and on . . .

Sally and Sophie are back home. Sally's called the police about her bag and she's not best pleased to find the turkey not cooked. The oven's barely up to the temperature. Tim says it must be cutting out and switches it off at the wall, for safety. Sally stomps off to get changed and a suspicious Sophie challenges Tim. She knows he just got home. He admits it and Sophie says she'll finish cooking the meal.

Michelle's back. And seeing Andrea puts her in the same mood as Sally. Andrea, sitting with Lloyd and Steve, says "Oh, she's wearing it! Fantastic!" Does anyone else sense trouble a-coming? Steve rapidly tries to change the subject but Lloyd wants to know more.

They're interrupted by the arrival of Hayley and Roy. Rob also arrives and fronts up to the bar where Kylie loudly tells him she was there first. She goes on to exchange insults with Tina and she taunts Tina about Tommy. Tina would love to have a go at Kylie but Liz holds her back and tells Kylie she's barred. Rob takes Kylie by the shoulders to steer her out. Liz tells Tina that if she ends up in the middle of trouble again she'll be looking for a new job. "Do you hear me?"

A police car swings into the street. Gail, who's arm in arm with Audrey, is scared Gloria's called them but Audrey points out that it wouldn't be parked by Sally's house if they were going to the bistro.

Kylie comes out of the pub door, trying to shake off Rob. When he won't let go she wants to know whether he's after something and grabs him in a drunken-snog embrace - but she's dragged off by Tracy and warned what will happen if she touches Tracy's boyfriend again. Tina's followed them out, despite Liz's warning, and taunts Kylie. Then they're scrapping in the snow. The police rush over and grab them both. Kylie's told she's under arrest for assault.

Back in the pub, Rita talks to Hayley. Hayley's brought Norris's coat with her but Rita says she need not have. She's hoping it will quietly disappear.

Michelle's nearby when Lloyd asks Andrea for more details about the blouse. Andrea says Steve almost chose a red one. Michelle, standing right behind, demands to know who chose the green. "Oh, is that the time?" asks Lloyd, getting out of the way. He offers to sort out a cab for Andrea and she goes too. Michelle's furious. Steve says he just wanted to make sure he got it right. Michelle's not just angry that another woman chose her Christmas present, she's furious that Steve made a big thing of the fact he'd chosen it and failed to mention that Andrea was with him when he did.

Mary comes in and asks Liz if she needs any more help behind the bar now that Tina's in the drunk tank ("as the Pogues liked to sing"). "Tina wasn't drunk," says Liz. "She was working."

Deirdre, wandering around with a drink in her hand and a circlet of mistletoe on her head, looks for someone to kiss. First up, she snogs Dennis. Eww. Poor Dennis.

Roy and Hayley are off. Mary, still thinking about the Pogues, starts to sing "Fairytale of New York." She gets to the line "An old man said to me 'won't see another one'," locks eyes with Hayley and shuts up. Hayley just says goodbye and Mary is left embarrassed. "Why didn't I go with Bing?" she asks Norris.

Roy and Hayley walk out into the snow. Hayley's in some pain and has to sit down on the bus stop seat. She won't let Roy go and get her painkillers. She's got something to say - if Roy ever meets someone else, he needs to know he has her blessing. Roy can't cope and gets up and reads the timetable in detail. Whoompf! "Did you just throw a snowball at me?" he asks. "Not very accurately," says Hayley. Suddenly there's snow flying all about. Kirk and Beth and Sinead have joined in. Beth decides it's girls versus boys and Hayley encourages Roy to help Kirk. She's delighted by the fight. For some reason this scene brought me to tears.

Leanne tells Nick she knew a woman in Leeds who always had make-up concealing bruising on her face. Leanne swore then that all it would ever take is one blow and she'd leave anyone who hit her. Nick says this is different. Hitting women is not in his nature. "What do you want me to say, Nick? That it's OK? Well, it's not OK!" Nick asks what she's going to do but Leanne just shakes her head and takes a sip of her drink.

The snowball fight continues and now Tyrone and Chesney have joined in. Roy sees that Hayley's starting to flag a bit. Owen and Izzy and the family arrive and join in as the Croppers leave. At their door, Hayley tells Roy it's wasn't the day they planned. "Better," she says simply.

Norris and Steve have a coin ready to toss. "No tongues," says Steve. "That's the rule." Norris looks horrified. "How did I get dragged into this?" Michelle asks what's going on. "Russian roulette," Steve says. They tossing a coin to see who has to kiss Deirdre. Michelle snatches the coin and tosses it, hiding their view of it. Steve's lost. "Come to Deirdre," Deirdre croons. While Steve submits to his fate, Norris asks Deirdre if Steve really lost. Nope.

Anna and Owen come in. They've left the younger folk to build snowmen. Sinead comes in looking for coats for the snowman. Rita sneaks Norris's coat past him.

Tina's back. Rita mouths "Are you all right?" and she nods. Liz says she can go home but Tina replies that it's double time and she's not letting some drunken trollop take money from her. "Lend me a tenner," says Deirdre, wittily.

At home, David gets off the phone. The police will keep Kylie in overnight. "Can we ask for longer?" asks Gail, who appears to be decorating his birthday cake. She thinks Kylie saw everyone being nice to Nick and Leanne and wanted some attention herself. David says he wound up Kylie. Gail says she'll call Max and they'll get these candles blown out. David says he's not in the mood. He takes his can of beer and goes out of the back door.

Back in the pub, the snow-fighters-sculptors have arrived. Beth's beating up Sinead's artistic ability - she won a national competition. Sinead points out it wasn't a national contest but a Bakewell one. Deirdre wants some more music and goes to play an Elvis song but instead selects "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" and suddenly everyone's singing and dancing to Andy Williams.

It seems the noise can be heard from the flat above the cafe, where Hayley lies on the sofa looking at scenes of Amsterdam. Roy looks out of the window and sees two snow people - one wearing a red coat and one a beige coat and carrying a shopping bag. Awww... Hayley joins him at the window and her face is beaming.

Leanne looks at her bruises and shrugs off Nick.

David stands out in the garden, drinking.

Kylie kicks and punches at the cell door before sitting down to sob.

Alone at the window, Roy looks out and the camera focuses on the pair of snow people, who will be gone when the snow melts.

All in all a lovely episode. Thanks, Debbie Oates.

The end.

Friday 27 December

Hayley's slept late and winces when she sits up to drink the cuppa Roy's brought her. Her arm hurts from throwing snowballs. She thinks yesterday was the best Christmas she's ever had. She wants to get up but Roy tells her there are more staff in the cafe than there are customers. Hayley's woken up very optimistic and tells Roy she's sure she will still be here in the Spring. She quotes a few words from Wordsworth's poem about daffodils but can't remember any more.

Leanne and Nick walk towards the bistro, with Leanne trying to stop Nick apologising every two minutes. Norris is putting out the banner for the papers and asks for help undoing the zip on his new parka so he can take off the hood. The coat was a gift from Rita and Emily but it's too hot, he says. Scott of the Antarctic wouldn't have frozen to death if he'd had a coat like this. "Though he wouldn't have been able to see where he was going." He says he heard there was a bit of family trouble. Leanne braces but he just means Kylie being arrested. Once his hood's off, though, he sees her black eye. Leanne tells him the bistro door swung and caught her but Nick says that's not true. "I hit her. It's part of my brain damage. I get these rages and I can't control them." Norris's mouth drops open. Leanne's horrified that Nick's told the truth. Norris wants to know more but Leanne snaps at him and he scuttles back in to the Kabin.

Gloria, Stella and a very hung-over Eva come over the street. "That's a shiner," says Gloria unnecessarily.

Rita goes to see Tina, who's defensive before Rita even gets in the door. She says Kylie started it. But she admits she was spoiling for a fight. She thinks maybe it was Christmas and seeing all the people with families, boyfriends and babies. Rita says Tina should come and talk to her when she feels like that, instead of swapping slaps with Kylie. She's sure Tina will find somebody soon.

Kylie leaves the police station and looks emotional when she sees a mother and baby in the street. Hayley looks down to check whether the snow people are gone but there's just a messy pile of old clothes and vegetables. Roy's found the full Wordsworth poem. He reads it. Hayley loves it. She loves it so much she's determined they should book a trip for the Spring so she can see a host of daffodils.

Stella and family eat breakfast in the cafe, Eva with dark glasses on and Gloria still going on about Leanne. She says Leanne should be packing her bags. Eva defends Nick, saying he's sick, not violent.

Hayley comes downstairs. Jenna's remembered it's the day Hayley gets her test results back. Hayley reckons that if she can survive Ty's burnt sprouts, a snowball fight and spending the evening with Norris then she'll be OK. She tells Roy to get the laptop. She wants to book their Spring trip now. Anna and Jenna look worried.

There's a game of darts going on in the pub - Tim, Steve and Lloyd have a bet on. "Epic fail!" says Steve when a shot goes wrong. Michelle is surprised. Who does he know who says "Epic fail?" Tim says Faye does. That causes Michelle to get more scathing about Steve wanting to be down with the kids. Lloyd, who's obviously smitten, asks about Andrea. But when he calls her sexy, Steve looks awkward and Michelle looks angry. Andrea herself arrives, wondering if she left a cardigan there. Liz coolly says they've had none handed in. Lloyd invites Andrea to play darts with them, against Tim's protestations that they're in the middle of a bet. Andrea loves darts. (She would!) Her first dart is a double-20.

Sophie's at the charity kitchen asking about Maddie and protesting that she's not accusing anyone. Maddie arrives and calls her hypocritical. Sophie says she only came to ask if Maddie had seen anything, because she was there at the time. Maddie didn't. As Sophie turns to leave, though, she says to tell Sally that her driving licence picture doesn't do her any favours.

Lily needs changing and Max is bored. So when David comes in to say Kylie's left the police station but he can't find her, Gail insists he take Max out. And if he finds Kylie, "Tell her to get a grip." Gail says they're still parents and she's not going to pick up the pieces again.

David and Max are out in the street near the salon. Around the corner, Kylie gets off the Weatherfield Wayfarer. David asks Tina if she's seen Kylie. Tina hasn't and she's not shy about saying what she thinks of Kylie. David defends Kylie, saying he provoked her. Max wants to go to the park but David says they have to find his Mum first. "Do we have to?" asks Max. He'd rather go on the swings. Kylie hears all of this.

In the cafe, Roy's getting anxious about leaving for the hospital appointment. Norris comes in and sees his coat on the floor - Roy's cleaned up after the snowmen. Norris can't believe the state of his coat. Hayley's found a lovely cottage - four bedrooms but with a wonderful view. Then she finds one with a thatched roof. Roy wants to go but she refuses. She wants to book the thatched cottage first, in case someone else books it before they get back. Roy thinks this is unlikely and he's worried about the sales traffic. "Please, Roy. While I still believe I can."

Norris is full of the gossip about Leanne and Nick. He's not sure he wants Nick in the Kabin. "What if I gave him the wrong change?" But before he can tell Jenna and Anna more about it, Leanne comes in and orders two coffees to take out. No, I have no idea why someone who owns a bistro with a coffee machine would go somewhere else for coffee but I suppose the writers had to have Leanne and Norris meet somewhere. Norris shuts up and Leanne looks at Jenna and Anna's faces. "No, forget it!" she says, turning and walking out.

Andrea coughs and puts Steve off his shot. "Epic fail!" she crows. Michelle's lips tighten. "Nothing you don't get from Andrea?" she asks. Andrea goes off to buy a round and Lloyd calls her a babe. He seeks confirmation of this from Steve, but Steve knows Michelle is listening and can't cope.

Kylie comes in and Liz steps forward to meet her at the counter. "One sniff of trouble and I will make Tina look like a pussy cat," she warns. She tells Tina that goes for her, too. Kylie hasn't come for trouble. She's come to apologise. Tina tells her to call David. He's worried. Kylie says sorry again and goes. Michelle can't believe she just heard Kylie apologise twice.

In the bistro, Stella's working on her day off. She tells Leanne it's because Eva's gagging at the smell of alcohol but she admits to Gloria that it's so she can keep an eye on Leanne and Nick. It's quiet and Leanne tells the two of them to go home but they refuse.

Rita and Norris come in. Norris wears his old coat and Rita thinks he smells like a wet dog. Leanne asks Norris if he'd like a closer look at her eye, or maybe to feel the swelling. Rita's not aware that Norris has been telling everyone about Nick hitting Leanne and Norris protests that he didn't know it was a secret - after all, Nick told him. Stella's annoyed when she hears this. Nick says he was trying to protect Leanne - she shouldn't have to lie about something he did. He tells Leanne's family that he didn't mean to hurt Leanne, he won't do it again and he doesn't need babysitting.

Roy and Hayley have finally arrived at the hospital, after an argument with a taxi driver because Roy forgot his wallet. Hayley says it's her fault they are late because she wouldn't leave when Roy wanted to.

Tim, Steve and Lloyd sit and drink with Andrea. She tells them she was spurred back to study by her 20-year-old daughter. She was a young mum. Steve comments that she and Michelle have a lot in common but shuts up when he spies Michelle's face. When Tim tells her he's got an 11-year old and his partner has a teenage daughter, he stops and says, "I'm a dead man!" and races off. Andrea jokes to the others about Tim being under the thumb. Steve doesn't look as if it's something to joke about. When Lloyd goes to the bar, Andrea asks Steve whether Michelle dislikes her. She says she's single and "not a complete munter" and some women don't like that. Steve says Michelle's not like that - he's got lots of single, attractive female friends. Lloyd comes back and sits closer to Andrea.

Lily's crying when Kylie comes in. "Where the hell have you been?" Gail asks. David deserves to know where Kylie is. And what about her son and baby girl? She holds out baby Lily for Kylie to take. Kylie says she'll only mess her up. "She wants her mummy," Gail says. But Kylie slams out of the house.

Tim's got flowers and chocolates for Sally. Unfortunately he's left the "Reduced to 1.99" sticker on the chocs. Sophie says Maddie's more or less admitted taking Sally's bag. Sally wants to call the police again but Sophie defends Maddie. She's not saying the girl was right to take the bag, but she knows how hard it must be, living on the streets at this time of year and seeing everyone else with happy families at Christmas.

Hayley and Roy discuss the model used in a health promotion poster. They're not so late because the doctor's running late. They're called in and Hayley stops. "What if it's bad news?" she asks. "We will deal with it," says Roy. "Daffodils!" says Hayley.

Hayley and Roy have been ushered into the doctor's surgery, and Roy wants to forget the small talk about the weather and traffic, and anxiously asks her to give them Hayley's results.

They are told it's not good news, she has a particularly aggressive type of cancer, and it hasn't responded to the chemotherapy and has spread to her liver. Roy earnestly tells the doctor they must try something else in that case, but she tells them she is very sorry, but there is nothing else that can be done.

Hayley wants to know how long she has got. The doctor tells her it is difficult to know as each case is different, but pressed, she tells them her guess is that they are looking at weeks now, rather than months. Hayley is quietly disappointed, saying she had been hoping to see the daffodils come up, and the doctor tells her that each case is different. The other lady in the room - whom I guess is called upon when the news to be given is as bad as it can get - tells Hayley she will be given full palliative care, and goes on to say she will be referred to a specialist nurse who can manage her symptoms. Hayley asks if she will be in a lot of pain, and the doctor tells her she will be given as much pain relief as she needs, as and when she requires it.

Hayley girds her loins, paints on a smile and thanks them both for all they have done. Shaking hands with the doctor, she tells Roy, who is sitting there absolutely stunned, that it's time to go.

Leanne and Nick are talking in the Bistro, he is saying he feels like he is in a freak show. Leanne agrees, and apologises to him. He asks why she is apologising when the whole thing is his fault. She replies she is not blaming him for it, so nobody else should. He looks at her black eye, and quietly thanks her for feeling that way.

Gloria and Stella don't feel that way however, Gloria tells Nick that they know it isn't his fault, but they don't know what he is going to do from one minute to the next, and they are now very worried for Leanne's safety. Nick agrees with them, and although Leanne tries to console him, he can't believe what he did to her, of all people. He tells them he needs to go home and try to clear his head.

After he leaves, her mother and grandmother start on her again, Gloria is of the opinion that if a fellow hits you once, he is bound to do it again. Leanne doesn't agree, saying he would never have done it in his right mind. Stella agrees, but points out he isn't in his right mind right now, and she doesn't know what he will do next. Leanne tells them she will not abandon her husband. Stella makes the suggestion that possibly they should just have a bit of space between them while he sorts himself out.

Walking out through the waiting room, Hayley is looking at the Christmas decorations, saying it's nice they make the effort the cheer the place up for the kids at Christmas. She then asks Roy if he would like to go and see the pantomime in town - right now. Roy is stunned at her request, saying he thinks they should just go home. Hayley is talking very fast, saying the last panto she saw had Charlie Drake in it, who had thrown some Murray Mints into the audience and hit a girl right in the eye. With a catch in her voice, she tells Roy she really wants to go - "Now please Roy". Putting his arm round her, he nods silently and leads her out of the hospital.

We are at the theatre now, and there are crowds of people lining up for tickets. Hayley asks Roy if he has ever been to a panto before. He tells her his mother took him to one once, and Tommy Cooper was in it, whom he found rather frightening, so didn't enjoy it at all. (Tommy Cooper? Him with the fez and the magic tricks that never worked? Hardly frightening.) Hayley is smiling, but her voice is trembling. She is looking around at all the happy laughing kids, saying there is nothing like the laughter of children, and asks Roy to promise her he will take Hope and Ruby to the panto when they are older. He answers that he feels sure Fiz and Tyrone will want to do that themselves. She agrees, saying it's fine as long as somebody does, then starts to say she would have quite liked to bring them herself, then breaks down in deep sobs and buries her face in Roy's chest. This happens just as they reach the front of the queue, and the woman selling tickets is not best pleased that they are holding up the line, because the play is about to start.

Roy holds her tight, and murmurs they can come back tomorrow, but still wants it to be her decision. With everyone staring at her, she sobs for him to please take her home. Oh dear, it is delayed reaction, and it has now hit poor Hayley hard.

Max and David are playing Hungry Hippo's, and David is losing once again. Between games, David is wondering to Gail where Kylie might be. She has no idea, and is more interested in making a brew.

Nick arrives, he is still beating himself up about what he did to Leanne. David points out that she has forgiven him, but that doesn't make Nick feel any better. He is not convinced it won't happen again, and tells Gail that her family were disgusted with him and frightened for her, and he doesn't blame them. Gail tells him they don't know him like she does, and she knows it won't happen again. But Nick tells her even she no longer knows him - nobody does, least of all him.

Kylie is not far away, she is sitting nursing a cup of tea in the cafe. Anna wants to close, but Kylie is insisting on finishing the tea she has been sitting with for over an hour. There is a scuffle, and the tea ends up on the floor, just as Hayley and Roy walk through the door. Kylie starts kicking off, saying she wants her money back for the spilled tea. She doesn't get far though, because Hayley, our sweet gentle Hayley, who always sees the good in every situation, screams at Kylie to stop it. She goes on to shout at her, saying if she is just doing it for attention, nobody is looking, because everyone has their own lives, their own worries, and that is just the way of the world. Kylie protests that she wasn't doing it for attention, but Hayley cuts her off, asking her what she is trying to achieve then? She points out she is young, healthy and has two beautiful little children, and asks her what more she could possibly want from life? Roy tries to calm her down, saying she should go upstairs, but Hayley tells him Kylie needs to hear what she has to say. She tells her when she thinks about the hours she has wasted in her life, being angry, or worried about things that really don't matter, she could weep, and she tells her she will too one day, because time runs away faster than you can ever imagine, regardless of what you do with it. Leaving Kylie to think about that, Hayley heads upstairs.

Upstairs, Roy is offering Hayley a mince pie, but she doesn't appear to hear him. She is pondering over her life, feeling very insignificant in the overall scheme of things. He reassures her that her life has been very important, that she is loved and will be missed by everyone. She is not placated though, and tells him she is here now with him, drinking tea, and in a month she won't be, and she is supposed to live with that. With those words, her anger gets the better of her, and she flings herself at the Christmas tree, smashing it to the floor, saying Christmas means nothing, and sinks sobbing into Roy's arms, saying "I'm not even fifty, it's not fair, I'm not ready!" He tries his best to console her, telling her he understands, nobody could be ready for something like this. She is shaking all over, and tells him how scared she is. Anna knocks on the door asking if everything is alright, as she heard the crash from downstairs. Hayley breaks away from him and runs into the bedroom, not wanting anyone to see her like this.

Roy answers the door, telling Anna everything is fine, and will be down later. She tries to peer into the flat, but he shuts the door, leaving her puzzled outside. He can hear Hayley sobbing her heart out in the bedroom, and decides to give her some space to let it all out.

Kylie has moved over to the Bistro now, and is making one drink last a long time there. Leanne comes over and Kylie asks how things are between her and Nick, but Leanne declines to talk about it. Instead, she suggests Kylie goes home. Still feeling sorry for herself, Kylie asks where her home is, and Leanne reminds her that her home is where her kids are. She tells her she doesn't want to spoil their Christmas, so Lee asks if she doesn't think she is spoiling their Christmas by not being with them, by getting bladdered and arrested? She tells her she doesn't know who she is trying to punish, but is sure it isn't Max and Lily.

Kylie tells her she can't just rewind to where they were before, just forget everything that has happened. Leanne asks her why she can't? She goes on to say that the only thing stopping her is her own stubbornness. She tells her she can't change the past, but how things go in the future is up to her, and she shouldn't let her anger or pride let her make the wrong call. This gives Kylie a bit more to think about.

Hayley is all cried out now, and she emerges from the bedroom to find Roy patiently putting the Christmas tree back together. She comes over and insists on helping him, as she feels she made the mess, and should help clear it up. He asks how she is feeling, and she states she is better for having a little cry, tells him she recommends it. Picking up ornaments from the floor, she notices Hope's angel is in pieces, she is very upset, saying she must have worked so hard to make it. Roy tells her he will try to fix it. Before he can move away though, she leans in to him, and gives him a long tender kiss on the cheek.

David has put Max to bed, and is talking things over with Gail. He is still beating himself up about the situation between Nick and Leanne, but Gail assures him they will get through it, because they love each other. Kylie arrives home, and David asks her how she is, and assures her he was just going. She tells him not to bother on her account. Excited, David asks her if she means she doesn't mind if he stays? She tells him resignedly that she doesn't give a toss whether he goes or stays as it's his life.

Nick arrives home and hears crying coming from the bedroom. With his head down, he goes out again and closes the door behind him.

He's fixed it! The toilet roll angel is together again, and Hayley is very grateful especially as she knows Roy doesn't believe in angels. He pops it back on top of the tree where it belongs. Plugging in the lights, Hayley smiles, saying it is as good as new. She tells him the angel will now probably be good enough to last until next year. He replies that he doubts he will bother next year. This upsets her, and she tells him he must. He reminds her that she had said herself that Christmas means nothing. She tells him she was just lashing out, and it's not true. She goes on to tell him that he means everything to her, and she knows that loving him has made the time she has had worthwhile. She apologises for putting him through all this. He assures her no apology is necessary, because nothing he is feeling could come close to what it must be like for her. He goes on to tell her that for him, she has turned an apology of an existence into a life fuller and more joyous than he could ever hope. He then says "But you are wrong, I do believe angels are real", lifting her face up to look into her eyes, he goes on, "How could I not?" (Excuse me a minute, I have to get a tissue - again!)

Nick comes back home, and this time Leanne has pulled herself together and is in the kitchen. She asks him if he is alright, as he is so late. He tells her he needed some time to think. He goes on to tell her he is so proud of her, the way she has stood beside him through all this, it makes him feel very humble. She tells him not to be daft, she's his wife, it's her job. Nick points out that it shouldn't be a chore though, and it is, he knows she is finding it hard. She admits she is finding it a strain, worrying about him, Simon and juggling it all with the Bistro, but it won't be forever. He tells her it might be, they have no idea how long it will be, or if it will ever get better. He goes on to say he can see the toll it is taking on both her and Simon, and feels it would be best if he moves out.

Leanne is shocked, and tells him it's OK, she can manage. But he tells her he can't manage. He can't live with the thought he might hurt her again, he cares too much for her. She tries to reassure him that she trusts him, but he tells her he doesn't trust himself, and needs to get his head together. She can see he is serious, so tells him if that is what he wants, she will be the one to move out, as he doesn't need the upheaval, and it's easier for her to just go and stay with her mother. She tells him she knows it won't be for long though, because she is not giving up on him, she loves him.

We are back now in Roy & Hayley's flat, and she is telling him that she had thought she would handle the terminal diagnosis better than she did. She had thought once it was definite, it would be just a case of dotting the 'i's and crossing the 't's, her reaction had taken even her by surprise. Roy tells her he was very surprised how composed she had been in the office, and she wryly smiles at him, telling him she must have been saving it all for him. She tells him she always knew the clock was ticking, but could drown it out before. But she can no longer do that, it is all she can hear. She tells him it's real, and it's close and she can feel every heartbeat taking her further and further away from him and everything she loves. With that, she breaks down in tears once again, while Roy holds her close. He tells her he will always be there right by her side, it's the only place he can be, where he has always belonged, and they will face this together.

The next few weeks are not going to be easy on any of us I fear.

Deirdre is disconcerted by the vision of Rob wandering downstairs wearing only his underpants and reminds him this isn't a nudist colony. Tracy swans in behind him and teases her mother for her discomfort. Deirdre points out having their sexuality shoved in her face all the time isn't comfortable. Rob does look a bit chastened.

Hayley is in bed and in obvious discomfort. They are listening to Opera. Roy tells her it is an aria about someone who is about to lose their loved one. Apt. Hayley gets serious after a little joke and tells him they have to tell close friends that she hasn't long. He doesn't know how and what to say. The truth as it is will probably be best.

Sean exits the shop and is nearly run over by a radio controlled car, navigated by Simon. Peter apologizes to Sean. Down around the corner, Leanne comes out of the Victoria Court flats with her carry all. Nick has returned from buying new trainers and sees her. She's just picking up some spare clothes. He's still clearly embarrassed that people might think this separation is permanent. She looks awkward as well as they say good bye until they see each other at work. He watches her go, sadly. Back across the road, Peter follows Simon and the car back towards the flat, observed by Tina who is in turn observed by Rob who comes over to ask what's up with her. They agree that what happened the other night didn't mean anything. She tells him she's got a lot on his mind. She's off for the bus into town and he offers her a lift, just as a mate.

Sophie arrives at the soup kitchen and though she's looking around (for Maddie), she asks if there's room for one more volunteer. Absolutely, she's told. Also, she's told they're starting a magazine up and looking for volunteer contributors, all profits going to the society. Sophie muses that she did get an A in English. Looks like she's considering it. Maddie comes in as the supervisor takes a call. Maddie is snarky to Sophie.

Nick ties up his new trainers as Kal arrives. Nick's workout outfit is a bit odd looking but practical, with black thick tights on under baggy shorts (and a workout type jacket). Kal admires the new trainers. Nick expresses his appreciation and hops Kal can help him. They start off with a few stretches.

Roy is industriously scrubbing the grill, being uncommunicative, more than usual. Anna gently asks him how it went at the hospital. He admits to her that the chemotherapy didn't work and Hayley only has a few weeks to live. To her credit, even when Roy turns back to the grill, Anna holds it together, albeit with difficulty, pats his shoulder and says how sorry she is. She turns to greet Deirdre at the counter and take her order for breakfast. Deirdre is cheery but realizes Anna is pretty much just only functioning and asks if Roy is all right. Anna can't find the words and just shakes her head. She goes over to Roy and asks if he still supports Hayley's plan to which he confirms that he does. Fiz and Tyrone come in and can tell Roy is upset. When Tyrone hears that Roy has to tell them something, he suggests somewhere private and Anna suggests they all to go Number 9, she can hold down the fort for a bit.

Rob must have waited for Tina to shop and has brought her back. She says she's working on New Year's Eve. He says he's going to a club in town with Tracy. Thanks very much, and she leans over and kisses him on the cheek, which is seen by Peter.

Roy has told Fiz and Tyrone the news and comments that it doesn't seem real. They make some small talk while Fiz is becoming more and more emotional yet trying not to break down in front of Roy who witters on about the trip to the Lakes which must be cancelled. She gets up and turns her head away from them. Tyrone is holding her hand while he lets Roy walk about the Lake District.

Peter notices Tina goes back towards Barlow's Buys when Rob comes out with a shopping bag, one she'd left in his car. Peter is still watching, steam starting to come out from under his collar. Another kiss on the cheek and when Tina leaves and Rob goes back inside, Peter charges over to the shop. He confronts Rob for playing around on his sister. Roy isn't sure what any of it has to do with Peter. Peter is aggressive, backing Rob up to a wall and then attacking him by grabbing him round the neck. Tracy runs in and assumes Rob has wound up Peter. Rob is ticked that she didn't take his side and Peter leaves, telling Tracy she has terrible taste in men.

In the pub, Tracy has come in after Peter to find out why he went after Rob. She accuses Peter of being a bully and then Liz and Tracy exchange some childish insults. She leaves and Liz gives Peter a dirty look.

Sophie has joined Maddie who is being nasty about Sophie writing for the magazine for the homeless. Ironic, since she's living in all the comforts while Maddie is on the streets. Maddie doesn't see what Sophie could possibly have to contribute that's relevant. Sophie defends herself but it doesn't really work with the defensive young woman. She tells Maddie she's got a chip on her shoulder but Maddie flippantly tells Sophie to think of her when she's in her comfy bed tonight.

Hayley appears to be dozing when Roy comes in to check on her but she hears him and says so. He tells her that he's told Anna, Fiz and Tyrone who all want to visit. Hayley doesn't want anyone to come and tells him to tell Carla as well. He wants to know if the news brings her decision closer. She doesn't answer him.

Peter is in the flat in the dark with a cup of coffee. Carla arrives and says she's had a mouthful from Tracy about the incident. Peter doesn't really get into details, obviously but he's also obviously still a bit wound up. Carla just wants everyone to get along. He tells her Simon is with Leanne which spurs her to express some sympathy for what Leanne is dealing with. They have a cuddle just as the door buzzes. It's Roy who arrives carrying his satchel. Why is this important? Stay tuned. He has come to tell Carla the bad news and she doesn't take it well. She immediately grabs her coat to go see Hayley. Roy tries to put her off but you know Carla, that's not going to happen. She tells Peter to meet her in the pub later. Carla rushes Roy out the door and the satchel is left on the table. I realize that Roy goes few places without it but would he really bring it to nip across the road for 5 minutes?

Outside, Tina is scraping muck off the windowsill of the Rovers windows. Liz comes out and sees Carla and Rob heading across the road. She mentions something about Peter kicking off with Rob which is news to Tina.

In the cafe, Carla barges in just as Anna is clearing up. Roy tries to stop Carla and manages to pull her back and Carla realizes she needs five minutes and sits down to compose herself. She promises she won't stay long. Roy realizes he's left his bag and gets a bit anxious about it. Carla comments that there's time to worry about the bag later, it's not going anywhere. Roy isn't happy about it.

In the corner shop, Kal is having a chat with Dev when Leanne arrives. They greet and she asks if Nick has signed up for training. She's glad but is worried he's trying to do too much too soon. Kal assures her that he's done a lot of training men after trauma such as domestic violence. That sends Leanne off defensively because he knows nothing about the situation and she'll thank him to keep his nose out of it. That's him told. He gives up.

In the pub, Deirdre is passing the time with Sean. Sean says he's not working New Year's (you'd think it would be all hands to the pumps!) Deirdre remarks she may need to get her locks changed to discourage Tracy from having Rob around. Sean mentions that he's a bit down about Hayley. Deirdre is a bit down after seeing Rob in his pants. Sean jokes that she should take a photo and send it to him for safe keeping. Deirdre points out she's seen better, but also a lot worse. The pants in question arrive along with Tracy, much to Deirdre's dismay. Tracy tells them about the bust up with Peter though she doesn't know why. Rob orders drinks while Deirdre defends Peter. Deirdre is also exasperated that she can't find a moment's privacy from the pair of them. In a wonderful exchange, Tracy whinges that most parents would be glad to spend time with their offspring. "Most parents don't have offspring like you!" Deirdre snaps. She hops off the barstool to go to the ladies' but overhears Tracy suggest that Rob move in with her to save on rent. He's not sure.

Tina has come to Peter's to give him a mouthful over his fight with Rob. She accuses him of being jealous and he admits it fully. He tells her it's her fault for making him feel like this. They move closer. He says Carla is going to be away for awhile. She admits she shouldn't be there because she can't trust herself. Closer. Closer. Yep, they're snogging and dragging the clothes off each other as they fall on the sofa.

Oh dear.

Continuing with the second half of the update from this one hour episode ...

Carla bursts into Hayley's bedroom but poor Hayley just feels like huddling under her covers. Carla makes to leave, telling Hayley as she goes that even if she feels cut off from everyone, they're all rooting for her. Hayley perks up at this and invites Carla to stay for a cup of tea although she warns her she may fall asleep.

Peter and Tina are lying naked together on the sofa. They're obviously not the least bit worried that Carla might come back because they jump up and run into the bedroom together, presumably to carry on where they left off.

In the Rovers, Deirdre is nursing a glass of red wine while, over by the bar, Rob and Tracy are discussing the merits, or otherwise, of him moving in. Tracy suggests that the reason Deirdre doesn't seem keen on the idea maybe because she's secretly lusting after Rob. Tracy tells him her mam's a very passionate woman who's had a good few flings in her time. "So that's where you get it from!" declares Rob.

As she predicted she would, Hayley has fallen asleep. While Carla sits at her bedside, she and Roy have a whispered conversation. He's very anxious to get his bag back which he left in their flat. No problem, says Carla, she'll sit with Hayley and lend Roy her keys so he can go and fetch it himself. Roy's worried about going in with nobody there but Carla isn't concerned. As she tells Roy, it's not like he's going to go rummaging through her knicker drawer. Looking more embarrassed than ever, Roy sets off with the keys.

While they eat their tea together, Sophie tells Sally and Tim that she's been offered the chance to write some articles for the soup kitchen charity magazine. Sally suggests she could write one about the girl who stole her handbag. But Sophie tells her mum she wants to help girls like Maddie, not get the police after her. Sally just can't understand Sophie's very different outlook on life to her own.

Carla and Hayley are sitting in bed together talking about how they might spend New Year. Hayley wistfully jokes about seeing the sunrise over the Serengeti and then laughs that her New Year's resolution is to finally get on the X-Factor. "What's it like?" asks Carla, suddenly. Hayley describes how she's jealous of the fact that everyone is going to continue with life but that she has to get off.

In the Bistro Gail and Stella are making polite conversation about shower gel but what Gail really wants to talk about is Leanne moving out of Nick's flat. Gail's keen to point out that this isn't a straightforward case of domestic violence and that it was brought on by Nick's brain damage. Stella asks her if she knows the separation was Nick's idea but Gail says she's just worried that a blow like this will tip him over the edge. As Stella points out, one more blow and there might not be a relationship.

Back in Hayley's bed she's telling Carla a story about how she got stuck on a chairlift with her mother when she was a child. Her mother was terrified and Hayley says she never understood that fear until now. "I'm so scared," sobs Hayley as Carla takes her in her arms with tears running down both their faces.

Meanwhile, Carla's bed is currently occupied by Tina and Peter. "What have we done?" asks Tina. "Something rather beautiful," replies Peter. [Yuck! I rarely add comments to my updates but this was so cheesy it had me feeling positively nauseous.]

While this is going on we see Roy downstairs fumbling with the key in the lock of the front door. As he's going this, Rita and Dennis come along the street and stop to ask him about Hayley. Rita's very upset to learn that Hayley isn't responding to treatment and only has weeks to live.

Upstairs Peter and Tina are now back in the living room, hastily putting their clothes on as they hear the key in the lock. Assuming it's Carla, Peter quickly sends Tina back to the bedroom.

Peter is hugely relieved when Roy enters the flat. Roy collects his bag and Peter ushers him out as fast as he can. "What are we doing? This is so wrong," says Tina once the coast is clear and she emerges from the bedroom.

Leanne arrives at the Bistro. Stella tells her that Gail isn't very happy about Leanne moving out but Leanne reassures her it's a joint decision and it's to help both of them. In fact, Nick adds as he joins the conversation, he's decided to turn over a new leaf, starting with reducing his hours at the Bistro. He tells Stella and Gail that it will mean he'll need them to give more support to Leanne. In the middle of all this, Sean comes in to book a table for him, Todd and Eileen for dinner the following evening.

Carla is about to take her leave of Hayley. She tells Hayley that although she might feel like she's in the loneliest place in the world she should remember she's not alone. Roy arrives back and returns Carla's keys and she looks surprised when he tells her that he found Peter in the flat. After Carla's gone Roy asks Hayley if she enjoyed her visit, commenting that Carla has a habit of cutting to the chase. Hayley says she thinks that's what she needed. She tells Roy that she's going to take control and looks at him with meaning.

Peter and Tina are tidying up the flat. As he bundles up the dirty bedclothes he tells her he'll finish up and she can go. "I hate this," says Tina, suddenly keen to leave. As she steps out into the street, who should be coming along but Carla. Tina tries to change direction but Carla spots her and stops for a chat. She tells her how she's been to see Hayley and that what she needs now is a big hug from her man. "I bet you do," says Tina, almost squirming with embarrassment.

Upstairs in the flat Peter is vacuuming when Carla comes in. She dissolves into tears as she tells him how much Hayley has gone downhill. Instead of being suspicious about Peter washing the sheets and giving the flat a thorough clean, she readily accepts his explanation that he stayed as home because he was worried about her. Peter gives Carla a big hug and tries his best to comfort her.

Over the road, Deirdre arrives home to find Rob and Tracy busy in the kitchen. They've really pushed the boat out with stuffed marrow and a cheese sauce out of a packet. Tracy points out that if Rob was to move in Deirdre could look forward to that sort of treatment every day. Not to mention the fact that they'd save loads of money and be able to afford all sorts of treats. Deirdre promises to think about it before observing that what she could really do with is a nice new telly. One of those plasma screens, she explains.

Tina has returned to her own flat. We watch as she sits forlornly and begins to sob.

Over at Sally's Sophie takes a call from the charity about the article she's going to write. Sally's mind is starting to go into overdrive as she sees this as the launch of a career in journalism but Sophie, who has the complete measure of her mother, tells her to stop going on and on about it.

Hayley has been making arrangements to meet with the woman who is going to organize her humanist funeral. Roy observes that things are beginning to gather momentum. Hayley agrees and says that they're taking control. "So why do I feel so out of control?" asks Roy. He tells Hayley that he knows she's going to take her own life but he doesn't know when and he wakes up every morning wondering if today's the day. Hayley promises that she'll never, ever keep him in the dark and when she's ready she'll tell him. She says that it won't be today and probably not tomorrow but when he asks her when, all she can tell him is that it will be soon.
