Thursday 2 August

In the cafe, Beth is gossiping to Roy about Michelle and Ryan. Steve comes in and is quick to leap to Michelle's defense, pointing out that she brought Ryan up on her own. Just then Michelle herself comes in, and says that Ryan was kept in overnight and they'll be interviewing him this morning. Roy says that he thinks she was very brave, it must have been a difficult decision. Michelle isn't sure Ryan will see it that way. She's going to go down to the police station to sit and wait, so Steve offers to take her.

Karl and Sunita are discussing Stella's demand that he signs over his share of the pub, or she'll tell the police that he took the money. She's seen a solicitor and there doesn't seem to be anything he can do. Sunita too, has spoken to a solicitor, an old friend, and what Stella is doing is blackmail. She thinks they should tell Stella they're not going to play her games. Sunita thinks Karl is entitled to a share of the pub and she's not going to take no for an answer. He wants to think about how best to handle it. Sunita says this is the time for doing, not thinking, and if he won't do anything then she will!

Over at the factory, the workers are discussing the situation with Ryan, the drugs and the police. Rob comes along and hears what they're saying, and thinks it's good that he heard it and not Michelle, she'd be upset if she thought they were gossiping about her.

Down at the police station, the police officer tells Michelle that Ryan has admitted taking cocaine, knowing it to be a class A drug. He won't tell them where he got it but insists it was a one-off. He'll just be cautioned – this time. Michelle heaves a sigh of relief.

Gary and Izzy are in the cafe when Owen comes in and sees them. Izzy says she had to get out of the house. Just then Katy comes in with baby Joseph, and Izzy looks distraught for a moment or two. However, she composes herself and is able to talk to Katy and Chesney quite normally, although she sneaks a long look at the baby.

Stella is chatting to Rita over the bar, when Tina comes in and asks for time off tomorrow night. She and Tommy are planning a trip to Blackpool. Stella agrees, and Rita says she's pleased that Tina and Tommy have got themselves sorted, and if she calls in to the Kabin before they go, she'll give them some magazines.

Sunita comes into the pub and asks Stella for a word. Without even looking round, Stella says she's busy. Sunita says it won't take long, so in the end Stella takes her through to the back. Sunita tells her that Karl won't be signing over his share of the pub. Stella tells her to expect a visit from the police. Sunita points out that blackmail is against the law and if she wants Karl's share he'll have to buy her out. Stella tells her that Karl gambled away his share of the pub, and Sunita is deluded if she thinks she owes Karl anything.

In the cafe, Roy asks his mother how Milton is, but Sylvia hasn't heard from him, he failed to make their online rendezvous.

Steve and Michelle have arrived back with Ryan. Michelle wants to know where he got the drugs from. “It was Kylie, wasn't it?” says Michelle. After a bit more pressure, Ryan tells her yes, it was Kylie. “Happy now?” he says, walking off.

In the garage, Tommy thanks Tyrone for allowing him the time off, he's really looking forward to going back to see his mates in Blackpool with Tina on his arm.

Michelle and Steve walk on down the Street and see Gail and Kylie. Michelle shouts to her, saying that she should have been the one locked up, after giving Ryan cocaine. “What?” says Kylie. Gail tells Michelle not to be ridiculous, but Michelle will not be put off. She says that David might have dragged Kylie out of the gutter, but she's still a bad'un. Kylie out outraged and threatens violence, while Gail tells Michelle that Kylie is a mother, she doesn't do drugs. Kylie points out that it was David who told Michelle about Ryan and cocaine because he was so cross that Ryan tried to get Kylie to do it with him. Michelle takes a swing at Kylie then, but are pulled apart by Lloyd and Steve. “You call me a bad mother Michelle? You want to try looking in the mirror!” says Kylie.

Tina is in the Kabin taking the magazines from Rita. Kirsty comes in just as Rita wishes Tina a good holiday. Tina says she's really looking forward to a week away, just the two of them. “Going away?” enquires Kirsty. Tina explains that Tyrone has given Tommy the week off, and they're going to Blackpool. “Lovely,” says Kirsty, but doesn't look as if she means it. Rita turns her attention to Beth and Julie, and serves them, while Kirsty stares into space with a face like thunder. Rita notices and asks if she's all right. “Fine,” says Kirsty, rearranging her expression.

Karl goes into the pub and tells Stella he'll sign over his share of the pub. He owes her in so many ways, it's the least he can do. He adds that she only has to say the word and he'll be back in a heartbeat. She tells him that's not going to happen, and puts the contract in front of him.

A distressed Sylvia comes down into the cafe and tells Roy that Milton has had a fall and broken his leg, possibly his hip too. She's very worried as he's not getting any younger.

Karl goes back to Sunita's and tells her he's signed the pub over. She asks why, and he tells her he thinks it's best to put it all behind them and make a new start.

Ryan wanders into the living room. Michelle has been thinking and she reminds him of all the things that have happened since he got home. And now the drugs. He says that he had the cocaine from uni and wanted to show off to Kylie. Michelle can't believe her ears and tells him how she's nearly had a stand up fight in the street with Kylie and Gail because of what he told her. He says it was what she wanted to hear.

Tommy is in the pub to see Tina, and he thanks Stella for giving Tina the time off.

Gary, Izzy, Owen and Katy bring Chesney into the pub for his first legal drink. He takes one sip and pulls a face, he's not sure he likes it!

Kirsty comes in and Tommy orders her a drink as she makes her way over to where Tyrone and Lloyd are playing darts. When he brings the drink over, he thanks Tyrone again for the holiday and the holiday from making his loan repayments. Kirsty doesn't look too happy.

Back at their flat, Michelle is cutting up Ryan's credit cards so he can't buy more drugs. He promises never to do drugs again, he never wants to see the inside of a police station again. She warns him that if there is ever a next time she will throw him out and wash her hands of him.

In the pub, Kylie and Gail are having a drink. Kylie is pleased with the way Gail stuck up for her against Michelle, and Gail tells her that she's a wonderful mother to Max and perfect for David.

Over at the bar, Owen tells Gary that Izzy will bounce back after what has happened, and he will too.

Over at Tyrone's, Kirsty makes it plain that she knows about Tyrone letting Tommy off paying back the money.

Michelle goes into the pub and apologises to Kylie and Gail.

Rob and Eva come in, and Izzy asks if it will be all right to go back to work next week. He says it is, and says he'll see her on Monday.

At the bar, Steve orders Michelle a drink, and she apologises to Stella. Stella says she would prefer the apology to come from Ryan, and Michelle assures her that he will come in as well.

Back at the flat, Ryan, who a few minutes ago promised his mother he would never touch drugs again, goes to his jacket pocket and pulls out a small packet of white powder. He sits back on the sofa smiling.

Tyrone comes into the kitchen to find Kirsty furiously chopping vegetables with a sharp knife. She's angry because he didn't tell her about Tommy, she had to find out by accident. Within moments they're yelling at each other and he says he knew she would over react. “Over react? I'll show you over react!” she cries, grabs the tube from the vacuum cleaner and starts beating him ferociously with it. He cowers on the floor until she realises what she's doing and stops. “I'm sorry,” she gasps, going towards him. “Get off me!” he snaps back, still crouched on the floor. Poor Tyrone.

Friday 3 August

It's morning and as Tyrone examines his bruises, Kirsty sees him and her manner is very awkward. She asks if he'd like to come with her - she has a hospital appointment to get her blood pressure checked (no, I don't know why the medical centre at the end of the street can't do this). "I do love you," she tells him. "I just can't help it when I think you don't love me and you're putting other people first." Tyrone denies doing this and Kirsty says giving Tommy a repayment holiday meant he thought Tommy was more important than her and the baby. She insists that Tyrone say sorry to her and to the baby.

Michelle asks Ryan about his plans for the day. They get into a discussion about whether or not he's still taking drugs and he assures her he isn't. "I don't want to end up in prison and worst of all I don't want to upset you.

At the garage, Kevin thanks Tyrone for holding the fort while he moved house. He assures Tyrone he'll repay the favour when the baby arrives. Tommy's very cheerful because he's spoken to Doreen and she's thrilled that he's going to visit. He's very very grateful for the chance. Despite his workmates' cheerfulness, Tyrone is quite abrupt with both of them.

Tracy's nagging Amy to get down to breakfast. At the breakfast table, Norris comments that Tracy isn't paying any rent and isn't contributing to the household expenses, "and we're supposed to support her and her child." "I can hear you, you know," Tracy tells him. Norris invites her to tell him if he's got a mistaken impression. Emily speaks up. "I think you have the mistaken impression that this is your house," she says. (Peter Whalley writes Norris's scenes so well I wonder if Norris is his favourite character) Tracy smirks and Norris says Emily has three lodgers but only one who pays rent. Emily says that's wrong. She's got one lodger and two guests and they're welcome to stay as long as they want.

In the taxi office, Lloyd asks Steve whether Ryan told the police where he worked. After all, they depend on good police reports in order to get their taxi licenses renewed each year. Lloyd thinks it's time Ryan moved on. Michelle comes in and asks to talk to Steve outside. Eileen and Lloyd watch them go with comments about Michelle batting her eyelashes and Steve doing anything she wants.

Outside, Ryan's slouching against a car but he straightens up and, prompted by Michelle, apologises to Steve and asks to keep his job. Of course he agrees. Steve tells him his first job is to clean the cars.

Back in the office, Steve tells Eileen and Lloyd. Lloyd tells him straight out that he's only being good to Ryan because he wants to get off with Michelle.

David and Kylie walk down the street saying nice things about Gail. No, it probably won't last long but at the moment they admire her for standing up for Kylie. Ryan approaches them to apologise to Kylie but has a job doing so because David's trying to thump him. Steve has to intervene and keep them apart. Kylie seems prepared to accept the apology but David's still furious.

Emily calls into the Kabin and tells Norris that Tracy has offered to clean the house from top to bottom. Norris is appalled to think Tracy might be going into his room. He thinks she'll be opening drawers and nosing around. Emily assures him Tracy won't be doing more than vacuum and dust. Rita wonders what Norris has in his drawers that he doesn't want Tracy to see. When Emily's gone, Rita tells off Norris for being happy for the elderly Emily to do his cleaning but refusing to let Tracy do it.

Tyrone's moving gingerly around the garage. Kirsty arrives with cake and asks how Tommy took the news that he couldn't have his holiday. Tyrone's surprised at this but covers by saying he hasn't had a chance to tell him. This annoys Kirsty because he's had all morning to tell Tommy. She says Tyrone can stay and tell Tommy and she'll go to the hospital on her own.

Norris interrupts Jason's lunch to drag him away on an urgent security-related job, but only after Jason's negotiated double time for the job.

Sylvia's been talking to Milton. The only company Milton has is his Cuban housekeeper. Oh, and maybe a nurse in a crisp white uniform. She's very grumpy with Roy when he asks about Milton and slams things around the cafe.

Tommy's also grumpy because Tyrone's told him he can't have next week off. Tyrone loses his temper and shouts that he has to stay and work and Tommy owes him money so he has to stay and work as well. Eileen calls in to inquire about one of the cabs which is being serviced and Tyrone shouts at her as well, threatening to move the cab to the back of the queue so it won't be ready until next week. Kevin has to apologise for Tyrone's behaviour.

Tina and Stella talk about Doreen. Tommy comes in and breaks the news about having to work. Tina's convinced Kirsty is behind the decision. She's determined to go and confront her but Tommy says Kirsty's not home. Tina decides to talk to Tyrone instead but Tommy gets her to wait because Tyrone's in such a foul mood.

Norris is back in the Kabin. He won't tell Rita what he's done but says he's sure Emily will tell her. He says he's made sure his privacy won't be invaded.

Steve calls in at the factory office to see Michelle. In a poor attempt at seeming casual, he tries to ask her out for a drink or a meal. He's interrupted when Michelle has to answer the phone.

Tyrone goes into the pub for a drink and Stella holds Tina back and serves Tyrone herself. She tells Tina not to create a scene and Tina agrees. She should have told Jason, though, because he launches into Tyrone for shouting at Eileen. Tyrone seems very beaten down and apologises for shouting at Eileen. He apologises for what he said about the taxi. "I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry for even existing!" He rushes out and Tina looks very worried.

Michelle finishes her phone call and tells Steve that his request to take her out makes her think Steve's only been nice to Ryan in order to make her grateful. "And it's worked. Good plan, Steve. Make a pass at me if you won't but don't insult me while you're doing it." Steve tells her he thinks she's the most wonderful woman in the world but Michelle accuses him of taking advantage of her son's drug problem and says Steve isn't to be trusted. "Get out, Steve. Leave me alone."

Tracy and Emily examine the large hasp and padlock attached to Norris's bedroom door. Emily suggests they just ignore it. Tracy says she'll try but she can't promise.

Steve tells Lloyd about making a pass at Michelle. Lloyd's pleased it all went wrong because now they can sack Ryan. Steve disagrees. If they sack Ryan it will just prove Michelle was right.

In the pub, Tiny tells Tommy she's going to go and talk to Tyrone.

In the cafe, Roy asks Sylvia whether Milton has said anything about wanting to see her. At first she's sarcastic and then admits Milton is desperate to see her and that he commented he just hopes he gets the chance to see her again.

Tyrone's in the garage office spraying something on his bruises. He's interrupted when Tina arrives and sees the marks. He tells her they're nothing. Nothing to do with her, anyway.

The end of episode one.

Tina is questioning the bruises on Tyrone's body, but he is covering up well for Kirsty. She knows he is lying, but before she gets a chance to quiz him further, Kirsty arrives, and the conversation is at an end. Tina, still looking worried, takes her leave.

Tommy asks Tina how she got on when she arrives back in the Rovers, and she starts to tell him what she has seen, but her phone rings which prevents her from finishing. It's Tyrone, begging her to say nothing to Tommy, and that he will explain it all to her later. Tina is confused, but promises she will keep quiet. After she hangs up, Tommy presses her to finish her story, and she tells him to forget it, that she had been thinking of something else.

Steve and Lloyd are propping up the bar, and Steve is telling Lloyd how he really had wanted to help Ryan, but Lloyd isn't buying that one, he points out that it's pretty obvious that the one he was trying to help was Michelle, help her into his bed, and now he has blown it big time.

Talking of Michelle, we switch to Maria's flat, and she and Michelle are talking about Steve. Maria is pretty anti-Steve for using Ryan to get to Michelle, but Michelle is not as angry as she might be, and murmurs that he has been good with Ryan, and seems concerned that he might not try again with her. Maria is exasperated with her, and Michelle agrees that she doesn't understand herself either.

Emily arrives in the Kabin, she is more than a little peeved that Norris has fastened a padlock onto his bedroom door. Norris is not contrite though, in fact he seems rather proud of his efforts. Emily points out that he is making it perfectly obvious that he doesn't trust Tracy, to which he agrees wholeheartedly, and reassures her that he doesn't, not one inch. Rita remarks that she thinks a padlock is going a bit far, and that he should have just spoken to her instead. Norris asks both ladies if they have forgotten that Tracy is an ex-convict who was in prison for murder. Emily reminds him that Tracy had just wanted to hoover the carpet, and that she is the one who wants to murder him, not Tracy. "In that case", says Norris, "It'll keep you both out then won't it?"

Ryan arrives in the cab office with a latte for Steve. He thanks him and tells him to take the rest of the day off, as they are quiet. Ryan asks why he didn't get together with his mother when he had the chance, as he had thought they were good together. Steve tells him that he screwed up big time, and that Ryan should make a study of his life, and do the exact opposite. Having buttered Steve up, Ryan then asks him for a £20 advance on his wages, but surprisingly, soft Steve turns him down, saying he has already upset his mother once today, and doesn't want to do it again.

Tyrone is giving Tommy a job to do over in the garage, but before he does it, he asks if Tina had a go at him earlier about taking away their holiday. Tyrone tells him she didn't, but when Tommy asks him when they might be able to have a holiday, he gets angry with him and tells him to just get on with the job he is being paid for.

Lloyd is coming into Streetcars just as Steve is taking a text. He is over the moon because it is from Michelle, inviting him out for a drink tonight. He crows to Lloyd that the old McDonald magic is back in action once again.

In Number 3, Emily, Norris and the two guests are just finishing dinner, Tracy and Norris start their usual bickering. He announces he is going to the Rovers later, but in the meantime, is going to his room to lie down. Tracy reminds him not to forget to padlock his door before he goes out, and he assures her that is one thing he won't forget to do. As the camera pans into Tracy's face, you can see the cogs turning in that evil brain of hers.

Tyrone gets home from work, and Kirsty starts in on him again, accusing him of taking Tommy and Tina's side against her. She tells him that this is why they are having the troubles they are, because he is never on her side. He quietly tells her that it won't happen again. She goes on to tell him that she knows he thinks of them as their friends, but they are not, they are his friends, as is everyone round there. Ty tells her that he hadn't thought of it that way, and that it won't happen again. He then offers to make the tea, and mentions that he has to pop out later to meet Kevin for a drink, as there is garage business to discuss. Kirsty is fine with this, and tells him that she will probably be asleep anyway, as she is tired. (Oh dear Tyrone, I hope that lie doesn't come back to bite you on the bum, or wherever else Kirsty decides to land her punch)

After the break, we see Tracy surreptitiously opening Norris's door, while we can hear him happily humming as he gets ready to go out inside. She removes the padlock which is hanging on the inside, closes the door again, hooks the lock through the hasp and snaps it shut. I think Norris has been well and truly hoisted with his own petard!

Steve and Michelle are sitting down with their drinks, and are both apologising to each other for their behaviour earlier. Michelle explains that she knows he only wants what's best for Ryan even if he does have an ulterior motive, and that she should accept his help graciously. They both decide that Ryan cannot be trusted at all, so they both agree on something, and that's a start.

Roy comes down into the cafe from upstairs, and even the griping from his mother cannot dampen his obvious pleasure. He tells her he has booked her a flight to Palm Springs to see Milton, (Aww isn't he a nice man). Does Sylvia throw her arms around him and kiss him and thank him for his generosity? No, of course she doesn't. She complains to him that she is not a love-sick teenager who can't manage without the sight of her boyfriend, she reminds him that they are both in their 70's. She goes on to point out that he has no idea what Milton would think to see her waltz in unannounced, what if he has other lady friends there? She tells him that he is hopeless at reading people. Roy replies that he thinks he has read her correctly in this instance, but she snaps that he hasn't, and should cancel the booking and get his money back.

Michelle and Steve have reached an agreement that between them they are going to watch Ryan like a hawk and compare notes. He starts to ask her out for dinner, but she senses what he is going to say, and tells him that he should wait until she asks him - and she will, she assures him.

Tyrone comes in just as Michelle is leaving, which is Tina's cue to take her break. Ty asks her if they can just forget about the whole thing instead, as he would rather not talk about it. Tina tells him she is not having that, she can't forget what she saw, and she can't forget how scared he had looked when Kirsty walked into the room earlier. So they go over to a table to talk.

Rita arrives looking for Norris, but nobody has seen him. Meanwhile over in the booth, Tina is pressing Tyrone to open up. He finally admits it was Kirsty who caused the bruises, but he points out that she didn't mean it. He tells her that she had hit him with the tube from the Hoover, but it wasn't her fault, she just couldn't stop herself, he explains that it was his fault because he had made her so angry she just lost it. He goes on to say that she gets like that sometimes. Tina is horrified to hear that this isn't the first time. Very angry now, she tells him that she always knew she was a nutter, and now this proves it. Tyrone immediately springs to Kirsty's defense, and tells her that she is not a nutter, that the fault lies with him because he provokes her. He goes on to say that it is also Tommy and her (Tina's) fault, because of the business with the money, and now the holiday just gets them rowing, and causes it to happen. Tina can't believe what she is hearing, she asks him to clarify that what he is saying is that it is everyone else's fault except Kirsty's. Tyrone replies that what he is saying is that it's not just Kirsty who is at fault, they are all doing their part in causing it.

Just then Tommy comes in, and Tyrone begs her not to tell him. She promises she won't, goes over to the bar, spins Tommy a story, and he should just get his pint and leave her to sort things out with Ty. Tommy is OK with this, so she goes back to the booth.

We are out on the cobbles now, and they are getting rained on - hard. Norris is calling for someone, anyone from his bedroom window. As luck would have it, Ryan walks by and hears him. Norris calls down asking if he knows Jason Grimshaw, he says he does, so he asks if he will find him and bring him here, as he has somehow gotten himself locked in his room, and needs Jason to get him out. Ryan asks for £20, says it's a loan, as one good turn deserves another. Norris has no choice, but to pay up. Ryan pockets the 20 quid, and strolls away chuckling to himself, that's the last Norris will see of his money, or Ryan tonight!

Roy is washing the floors at the end of the day, and Sylvia appears from upstairs. She is still finding excuses as to why she can't go, saying she will never be able to pack in time. Roy points out that he hasn't told her when the flight is, but she admits she took a look at his computer, just for academic reasons of course. He retorts that in that case, she knows she has time to pack tonight. Roy can see she is still dithering about going, so begs her to please go. She asks him why he is doing this, and he tells her it's to make her happy. He can tell she is worrying about Milton, and wants to make her happy. She then tells him that she feels she doesn't deserve it. Roy then tells her that there is a condition, that she must come back, that he doesn't want her stopping over there. She hastily assures him that she couldn't, she wouldn't, and moves towards him. Roy immediately backs away, and Sylvia points out that she only wants to give him a hug. So awkwardly he allows not only a hug but a kiss on the cheek as well, as she thanks him sincerely. When she reaches the door to the stairs, she turns, obviously wanting to say more to him, but he has turned his attention back to the dirty floors, so she thinks better of it.

Emily and Tracy come out the front door, and hear Norris shouting out the window for help, why they couldn't hear him from the inside is anybody's guess, but there you go. Tracy asks what he is doing, which sets Norris off on a rant, saying she knows full well what the problem is. After a bit more argument, he throws the key down to Tracy, who says she will let him out after he has said 'Please', it almost chokes him, but he does it. Emily goes back inside as well to put the kettle on.

Rita is fed up with waiting for Norris, and leaves. Tina is still talking things through with Tyrone, but not getting anywhere. She wants him to get out of the relationship immediately, but he is adamant that he loves her and is staying. He tells her that he is the one who has to change, that he has to learn to stop provoking her. Tina cannot believe what she is hearing. Ty makes her promise not to tell anybody, because he will sort it himself, so she promises, but is very unhappy about it. She offers him her support, and tells him she is there if ever he wants to talk. He snaps back that he is not likely to want to do that, that this is for him and Kirsty to sort out, nobody else. He then tells her he has to leave, and shoots off home.

Tommy thankfully doesn't ask too many questions, so Tina doesn't have to lie, but as she rests her head against his shoulder, you can see she is very troubled indeed.

When Tyrone gets home, Kirsty is awake, and asks him to tell her the truth, has he really been speaking to Kevin? Ty answers that he has, she asks if he told him what had happened last night, and Ty immediately assures her he hasn't. She gets upset and tells him she couldn't stand for anyone to know, and he asks if that means she won't even tell a doctor. She replies that she obviously didn't mean a doctor, but anyone round there, she just couldn't bear it if word got out. He reiterates that he hasn't told Kevin anything. Kirsty goes up to bed, and Ty sits looking very worried, but we don't know if it's because he has told someone, and is scared she will find out, or whether he is scared that she won't go to see a doctor. Maybe a bit of both.

Tyrone is glumly making a cooked breakfast when Kirsty comes down. He winces when she puts her hands on his shoulder. They discuss whether she should go to the doctor for help. She's reluctant as she finds it difficult to admit to anyone else. Tyrone reckons it's as simple as pregnancy hormones. She more or less agrees and with a bare nod, Tyrone thinks she's going to make an appointment.

In the Kabin, Norris is being sarcastic again about Tracy living under his roof and how likely it was that he locked himself in his bedroom. He deduces by eliminating all the usual suspects, even saying that Emily lacks the motivation. I wouldn't be so sure about that! Emily looks very long suffering and finally stops Norris in his tracks. He says it's obvious it was Tracy but Emily says he deserved it because he's been nothing but hostile since they moved in.

Michelle says that Carla has been sending an onslaught of emails from wherever she happens to be. I'm assuming they're still in port because I very much doubt there's a good internet or phone signal on a small boat in the middle of the Atlantic. Rob suspects Carla doesn't trust him to run the factory properly. Kirsty knocks on the office door and asks for a bit of time off to go to a doctor's appointment. Rob starts to give her the third degree but Michelle cuts him off sharpish and allows the request.

Tina and Tyrone are having a hushed conversation where he's blaming himself as much as Kirsty for the problems they're having. Tina isn't buying it. In the garage, Kevin is talking to Tommy about some toy he's bought Jack that scares him. When Ty comes back in, Tommy jokes that he's chatting up Tina behind his back which doesn't go over well.

Michelle is having a coffee with Ryan and chatting about university. Ryan admits to missing the girls and the band he had but the lead singer was a bit of a control freak and egomaniac but then smiles and admits he was the lead singer, himself! They'd only done two gigs anyway. Steve comes in and smiles at Michelle who smiles back, noticed by Ryan. Norris is asking Mary to cover for him in the Kabin as he has an appointment. She's busy helping out Roy in the cafe and refuses to leave him in the lurch even though, in the background, Roy comments that Mary shouldn't be working there due to insurance issues. Steve sits down with Ryan who tells Steve his mother wondered why he hadn't been playing any music since he came back.

Kirsty is in the medical centre waiting for her appointment. Deirdre is making small talk about washing powder. When it's her time to go in, Kirsty bottles it and leaves. Tyrone sees her as she comes out and asks her how it went. She lies and says it was fine and basically the problem is hormonal. Tyrone is relieved and reassured. Deirdre has come outside for a ciggy and is watching with interest.

Steve asks Lloyd about a mate of his who has a pub that features live music. He asks Lloyd to put a word in for Ryan. Lloyd teases Steve about trying to do nice things for Ryan in order to get Michelle into bed. Steve has no idea what he's talking about. Really. (And to be fair, I think partly Steve really does want to help out Ryan)

Tyrone has told Tina what the doctor told Kirsty but Tina is skeptical. She doesn't think the doctor knows what he's talking about. Deirdre comes in to meet up with Eileen. Paul calls over from a booth that Eileen is doing her ironing and Deirdre should meet her there. Before she goes, she asks Tyrone about Kirsty and tells him she swerved her appointment. Tyrone says Kirsty is fine but leaves the beer with Tommy and Kevin and hurries out the door. Deirdre orders a red wine from Tina who's watching Tyrone with a concerned eye.

After the break, we're in the Streetcars office. Tracy comes in griping because he taxi is late. And by the way, when is she getting her share of the house sale. He says never because it's his house. (but he also told her, back when he bought it, that her name was on the deed too). He tells a newly calling customer that her taxi is delayed in traffic and promises to come get her himself. He throws Tracy out of the office and follows her out.

Tyrone is questioning Kirsty about what the doctor said and then reveals he knows she lied. She admits she was ashamed. She feels sick when she thinks about what she does and she was scared the doctor would tell her she was mad or would be a danger to the baby. Tyrone assures her she wouldn't be.

In the cafe, Roy is wittering on to Mary about insurance but she brushes him off, she's just helping a bit, wiping tables etc. She tells him about another Elgar concert in Malvern on Friday. She passes him the details on a flyer. He thinks it's a very good idea and even offers to buy the stickiest, on him as a treat. She's giddy with excitement and offers to book the hotel because it's a bit far to come back late at night.

Steve and Lloyd are in the pub and he's talking about the cab job he had to take and the traffic problems he encountered. He then tells Steve that he talked to Lloyd's mate and can offer Ryan a short spot on the open mike Monday night show. Steve asks Lloyd to tell Ryan himself because he doesn't want anyone to know it came from him. Lloyd takes the mick, naturally. Michelle comes in with Rob so Lloyd takes the opportunity to tell her about the gig for Ryan. Lloyd gets all the praise, leaving Steve frowning.

Deirdre is walking Eccles down the ginnel. Tyrone and Kirsty are in their back yard, arguing. She obviously heard them.

Tracy is eating blackberry pie and talking about nothing in particular, annoying Norris. Emily enters but when she sees the pie, she scolds Tracy. She'd made that for a friend. Norris points out with a sneer that Tracy is claiming she's not feeling well. Tracy assures them she's not well and during the ensuing argument, Amy knocks over a pot of blue paint she's been using, all over Norris' shoes.

Ryan is tuning his guitar. He's a bit nervous of the pub gig, tonight! She tells him he'll be great and this could be an opportunity as well. Ryan agrees to go it. She'll planning to go and watch. She heads into the bedroom to check her wardrobe and Ryan, spotting her handbag, steals some money out of her wallet and makes a phone call.

Kirsty comes out to talk to Tyrone and make up. He accuses her of changing the subject and insists they need help. She tries to turn it on him, saying he has to trust her, they need to trust each other! He points out that she's already proven he can't trust her because she lied about the doctor. Tearfully, she says she can't trust him because he's always breathing down her neck. It's not easy being pregnant. He fires back with the fact that it's not easy being hit by the woman you love. She's more concerned about her own embarrassment, not about him. She's got a funny way of showing how she loves him. He hollers that he should knock her around the yard and see how she likes it. Naturally, just then, Deirdre is returning from her walk with Eccles and overhears it. Tyrone turns away and is going to go back to work. Kirsty grabs him from behind to stop him. He pushes her away but a little too hard and she falls and hits her head on the wall, crying out. Deirdre peeks around the back gate to see if she's all right. Uh oh.

Kirsty is lying on the ground in the backyard. She has a nasty bump on the head. Ty has come over all concerned and Deirdre has come over all suspicious. Deirdre offers to ring Dr. Carter to see if he can come and check Kirsty over while Ty leads her back inside the house.

Ryan's on the phone to his dealer but the minute his mum walks through the door he makes out it's a mate who's going to go and watch him play later. He's not keen to have her join him in the pub for drinks beforehand, although Michelle naively assumes that's because it wouldn't be cool to have his mum tagging along. However, he's quite happy for her to rock up at the gig later.

Over at Emily's, Norris is still furiously trying to scrub blue paint of his dancing shoes. Tracy tries telling him it was an accident but Norris doesn't believe her for a moment and gets even more upset when Tracy and Amy get the giggles. Emily has to explain the reason: the paint has now found its way onto Norris's face and the more he tries to wipe it off the further it spreads.

Michelle sees Steve in the street and tells him she's going to book a cab to take her to the gig later. She still believes she has Lloyd to thank for setting the whole thing up.

Dr. Carter has called in to see Kirsty. Ty looks anxious and offers to make him a brew but he's more interested in checking out his patient. While Deirdre sits in the background looking worried, Dr. Carter reassures Kirsty that everything seems to be fine with both her and the baby. While Ty shows him out, Deirdre uses the opportunity to have a quick word with Kirsty. She tells her that if she ever needs to talk ... Kirsty wants to know what she means by that so Deirdre explains that she overheard her and Ty arguing in the back yard. She says that she doesn't know what it was about but that she knows things can get out of hand sometimes. Kirsty tells Deirdre that it was an accident and that she slipped and fell but Deirdre clearly doesn't believe her. Ty comes back in and there is a distinctly awkward atmosphere in the room as Deirdre leaves.

Back at Emily's she's suggesting Norris tries turps on his shoes. Tracy tells him that nobody will look at his feet but Norris points out that they're dancing shoes and that everyone will be looking at them. Just then there's a knock at the door and while Emily goes to answer it, Norris tells Tracy just what he thinks of her. He certainly calls a spade a spade when he describes her as pure evil. The visitor turns out to be Steve so Norris fills him in on what's happened to his shoes. Amy comes running in and asks Steve if Tracy can join them at the pictures. He reluctantly agrees but Tracy declines, saying that she's feeling very tired. Norris is horrified at the thought of being left alone with her. Steve asks her if she's alright and Tracy responds that she's just got a really bad pain in her neck as she glowers in Norris's direction. As Steve goes to leave with Amy Norris follows them out into the hall. He begs Steve to tell him that there's some chance of a reconciliation so that Tracy will move out but Steve says there are only two chances: slim and none; and slim has just left town. Norris stomps back into the sitting room where Tracy has fallen asleep over the table.

We now move to the ginnel where Ryan is having a shady assignation with his dealer. Ryan hands over twenty quid in return for ‘some good stuff for the weekend'.

Kirsty and Ty are sitting at the table over two plates of fish cakes but Kirsty's lost her appetite. She apologises but says that the whole thing was a bit of a shock and she's just not hungry. Ty says he feels terrible when he thinks about what could have happened. Kirsty's tone changes when she says that now knows how easy it is. She tells him she knows he didn't mean it but she still ended up on the floor with blood on her face. Ty looks shocked and says that it was an accident. He starts to get angry when KIrsty implies that it's the same as when she hurt him. He says it's not the same at all as he never meant to hurt her. KIrsty gives him a look and tells him that it's not what Deirdre thinks. She tells Ty about their conversation and says that she put Deirdre straight but Ty starts to get more and more upset. Kirsty says that just because she was the one who ended up with the bruises she knows that she's still the bad guy.

In the cafe Mary is turning the shop sign to closed. Roy tries to tell her that she doesn't need to stay and do any more work but Mary is more than happy for the excuse to remain. Roy tells her he must pay her but Mary insists she's just helping a friend and she hopes that if she ever needs help in the future he would be happy to reciprocate. At that moment the door opens and Hayley walks in. Mary is most put out and tells Hayley she thought she wasn't returning for another day. Hayley and Roy seem delighted to see each other and Mary stands forlornly in the background as the pair disappears up to their flat together.

We return to Kirsty and Tyrone where tension is mounting. Ty wants to know how they've got to into this state and points out that they're about to have a baby at any moment and they ought to be happy. Kirsty says she doesn't think she knows how to be happy and Ty tells her that's why she needs help. Kirsty says it will be better once the baby's there but Ty isn't convinced and wants to know what will happen if it's something more serious. He voices both their concerns when he suggests that she might hurt the baby in the same way that she's hurt him. Kirsty wants to know why Ty puts up with her and he tells her it's because he loves her but she wants to know how he could love someone like her. Finally, Kirsty agrees that she'll get help. She says she just wants a normal life. "Me too," says Ty. Kirsty promises she'll go and see the doctor and Ty promises he'll make her happy and they'll be the happiest family on the whole street. Then Kirsty makes a suggestion. She thinks they should do something really normal for a change and tells Ty to go and have a pint with his mates in the pub while she goes and has a lie down. He doesn't seem sure but she finally convinces him, telling his as he goes that she loves him and that he's a very special man. The moment that Ty walks out of the house, Kirsty breaks down and starts to sob her heart out.

Ty is standing at the bar in the Rovers while Kevin and Tommy sit in the background, discussing the fact that he seems distracted. Kevin puts it down to the impending arrival and tells Tommy how you don't realise it until it happens but having a baby changes your life and helps to makes sense of everything. We can practically see the cogs whirring in Tommy's brain as he takes in this information and then looks across at Tina behind the bar. Meanwhile, Ty is telling Tina that everything with the business of Kirsty and the doctor is all sorted and everything's fine now. At that moment Deirdre appears on the scene wanting to know how Kirsty is. Tina immediately pricks up her ears so Ty quickly brushes off the incident and says Kirsty just had a little accident. Deirdre says she's surprised to see Ty in the Rovers so he immediately goes on the defensive, explaining it was Kirsty's idea. He starts to shout, then apologises, and says Deirdre's right, he shouldn't be there and he heads off home. "Summat's not right there," Deirdre comments to the assembled company.

Over at Emily's, Norris is really irritated when he goes into the sitting room to find Tracy is fast asleep and hogging the sofa. He tries coughing loudly but when that doesn't work he gets out the vacuum cleaner and turns it on to full power. As Emily comes in wanting to know what's going on, Tracy wakes up and says she's not feeling at all well and has a temperature. She really doesn't look great and tells Norris that if she wasn't feeling so ill she'd knock his lights out. Norris is furious that she's threatened him with violence and Emily is forced to remind them both that it's her house. Tracy begs her not to throw her out and says she's going upstairs for a lie-down. As she goes out into the hall we see her clutching her stomach and it's clear that she's definitely not faking her illness.

Roy and Hayley come downstairs on their way out and are surprised to find Mary is still in the cafe, mopping the floor. Hayley says she does hope that Roy's paid her for her time but Mary tells her that you don't pay your friends for helping out. She then goes on to tell Roy that she's booked two rooms in a hotel in Malvern. Hayley looks slightly taken aback by this news until Roy explains it's for the night of the Elgar recital. Then Mary is the one to look upset when Roy reveals that he's managed to book three tickets for the concert as Hayley's going too. Seeing how she's feeling, Hayley tactfully suggests Mary might like to join them for a drink in the Rovers but Mary declines in favour of going home to listen to the Enigma Variations on her noise-cancelling headphones.

We go back to the Rovers. Having heard from Kevin how a baby changes your life, Tommy decides to put the idea to Tina while she's pulling pints behind the bar. She seems more interested in finishing off her packet of peanuts and tells him to put the idea on hold for at least five years although she does agree to let him know when her biological clock starts ticking. At that moment, Michelle comes in full of maternal pride for her "hugely talented son". Even Ryan has the grace to look embarrassed when Michelle boasts about how brilliantly he performed at his gig and tells Tina and Tommy how he was asked to join three different bands. She gets out her purse to buy everyone a drink but before she has a chance to notice she's missing some cash, Ryan jumps in and offers to pay for them. Michelle asks if anyone's seen Lloyd and Tina tells her he's out the back.

Emily is having a drink with Norris and attempting to pour oil on troubled waters but Norris is still upset about the paint Amy poured on his shoes. He starts going on about how Tracy is trying to get him out of the house and how she's feigning her illness to play on Emily's sympathy. Emily sighs in a resigned fashion and sips her sherry.

Michelle has found Lloyd in the backyard of the Rovers and he looks quite taken aback when she thanks him for getting Ryan his gig with a smacker on the lips. She starts waxing lyrical about how good Ryan was and tells Lloyd how success depends on having the right contacts. He replies that he's glad it went well but then admits he really can't take all the credit.

We move to Ty and Kirsty's house. He's coming in the front door after calling in at the chippy while she was about to leave after calling for a cab. Trouble is, the cab's late and she's only got as far as packing her bags and writing a farewell note for Ty. She tries handing the note to him but he rips it in half. He begs her to talk to him but Kirsty's made her mind up. She tells Ty they're bad for each other and, if she stays, it's only going to get worse and she doesn't want that to happen.

Michelle has gone round to the cab office to see Steve and it looks like she's on a mission. "It's all your fault," she tells Steve. "I've just kissed Lloyd." Steve looks confused until Michelle explains herself: she's worked out that he was the one who got Ryan the gig. She carries on with her grievances: first Steve got Lloyd to lie for him and then he caused Michelle to make a massive fool of herself. Steve looks quite put out and tells Michelle he was only trying to do her a favour. And then she breaks into a smile and tells him that she only came round to say thank you but she just couldn't resist winding him up. She tells Steve that he doesn't need to play games with her and that Ryan was a massive success ... yes, we're beginning to get the picture by now - Ryan is a budding rock star. Then Michelle makes Steve's day by saying that she might even let him take her out for a drink.

Back at Ty's he's desperately trying to persuade Kirsty not to leave. She tells him that he's the only person who knows what she's really like. Ty tells her that's why she needs help but Kirsty replies that she's beyond help. She says if she stays she'll hurt him again and she can't bear to do that to him. She says she can't do anything about it with Ty around and she needs to concentrate on the baby. Ty reminds her that it's their baby which is why they need to be together but Kirsty says that it's being together that's the problem. She tells Ty it's not his fault but hers and that he deserves so much better than her. Ty begs and says he'll do anything but as she tenderly strokes his cheek, Kirsty reminds him that she's made so many promises to him and then she's broken them all. She says he should have kicked her out ages ago and Ty sobs he'd never do that. "I know," says Kirsty. "And that's why I have to leave you."

We hear the taxi outside and, as she hugs him, Kirsty tells Ty she doesn't think she'll ever love anyone the way she loves him. Kirsty finally walks out of his life, leaving Ty collapsed on the bottom of the stairs, sobbing his heart out.

Thursday 9 August

We open with a distressed Tyrone leaving a message on Kirsty's voicemail, begging her to come back and sort it out. He won't give up on her or the baby. Suddenly there's a loud knocking on the door, and he rushes to open it. It's not Kirsty however, but a delivery man with a large box, the picture on the box shows us that it's a baby's cot. As he finishes signing for it, Deirdre comes along and Tyrone apologises for yesterday. She says he's bound to be stressed with the baby coming and she asks how Kirsty is. Tyrone says that she's fine, putting her feet up today. Deirdre tells him to make sure he makes a fuss of her.

Mary and Norris are in the cafe having breakfast, and Mary is very excited about the forthcoming Elgar concert. Just then Hayley rushes in, also excited, and tells Norris that Valerie and Clive, the dancers who were supposed to be dancing in the regional finals tomorrow are now out of action because Clive has given himself a hernia. Their dance coach wants them, Hayley and Norris, to take their places. As Norris goes off to get his costume sorted out, Roy asks Hayley: "Tomorrow you say? But what about the Elgar recital?"

Tyrone goes into the cafe. Rob and Michelle are in there and Rob asks after Kirsty, wondering how she is as she didn't come back to work after her doctor's appointment. Tyrone tells him she's still not herself and won't be in today. Rob persists, asking when she will come back as they have an order to get out. Tyrone loses his temper and shouts that he's not a doctor, Kirsty is 8 months pregnant and sick so packing knickers into a box isn't top priority right now. "Got it?" he yells, and storms out.

Katy has decided that she's like to have a Christening for Joseph. A family do with a spread in the Rovers. Chesney looks doubtful, but tells her that if he has a good week or two at the market they might manage it.

Norris is at Emily's, desperately trying to clean the paint off his dancing shoes, but without success. He thinks he's going to have to buy a new pair, but dancing shoes have to be broken in. His bunions are going to suffer! Emily then brings out a pair of black patent men's shoes, they were Ernest's dancing shoes, she offers them to Norris. Norris however, looks worried, he's not sure about wearing a dead man's shoes. "They're not possessed, Norris," snaps Emily, obviously offended. Eventually Norris accepts her offer.

Ryan goes into the taxi office and tells Steve he's had the offer of another gig, but will have to turn it down as his amp has blown. He asks for an advance on his wages so he can get another one. Steve tells him to leave it with him.

Tracy wanders into Emily's living room, she's not feeling very well and reckons it was Norris's fault for waking her up with the vacuum cleaner. Emily tells her that she's arranged for her to earn a bit of money helping the local florist decorate the church for a wedding. There may also be the prospect of more work in the future if it goes well, but Emily wonders if Tracy is feeling well enough to do it. Tracy assures her that she is.

Ryan walks down the Street, talking on his phone, arranging to see someone later.

Tommy and Tyrone, who is fiddling with his phone, are sitting outside the garage when Chesney pulls up in his van. It's been playing up and he'd appreciate it if Tyrone could look at it as soon as possible. Tyrone takes the keys from him, but wanders a short distance, making a phone call to Kirsty's mum, asking if she's seen Kirsty today. It would seem that she hasn't. He turns round, angry, and kicks the van, which by now has smoke coming out from under the bonnet. Kev snaps at him to be careful, and Ty storms off, saying he's going for his dinner. "What the flamin' 'ell is the matter with you?" shouts Kevin as Tyrone marches across to his front door.

Tracy is asleep on the sofa when Emily returns home. She's furious because Tracy didn't show up at the church to help with the flowers. Tracy says she was too tired after all. Emily is cross because she didn't even pick up the phone and call to say she wasn't going.

Just then Norris comes in, he's managed to buy some patent leather shoe cleaner which he thinks will bring Ernest's shoes up a treat. "Ernest's shoes?" Tracy looks shocked. Emily tells her that she's given Norris the shoes. Norris then finds that someone has glued the tongues to the insoles on both shoes..... They both turn and stare at Tracy, who stammers that she had no idea they were Ernest's shoes, she was just trying to teach Norris a lesson. Emily is furious, she asks when Tracy is going to grow up. She thinks she can do anything she likes regardless of the consequences. She's lazy, feckless and spiteful and it might be best if she finds somewhere else to live.

In the cafe, Hayley tells Roy that she really, really wants to go in for the dance competition. Roy tells her in that case she must do it, and he must be there to cheer her on. Hayley however, urges him to go to the recital.

Tracy is out on the pavement with her suitcase. Emily tells her she can stay until she finds somewhere else, but Tracy says she won't stay where she's not wanted. Ken comes along then, he didn't think it would be long before Emily had enough of Tracy. When he hears that she didn't take up the offer of the work for the florist he's not surprised. Tracy says that she's not feeling well, but they don't believe her. She begs Ken to let her come back to his house, she's got nowhere else to go, but he refuses, saying she has to learn her lesson. He offers to have Amy, but Tracy says no, they're a family and they stick together.

Tyrone comes out of his house and Chesney rushes over, asking why he hasn't looked at his van yet. Tyrone says he had something to do. Chesney says he needs the van, he can't move his stock without it. "I'll look at it in a bit," says Tyrone, brushing past him. Chesney grabs him. "Look at it now!" he says. Tyrone loses his temper again and shoves Chesney up against the van, shouting that he's got more to worry about than his poxy van. Kevin and Tommy pull him off, and Tina, who was passing, soothes Tyrone saying it's all right. Kev says it's not all right, Tyrone can't attack the punters. "I'm going home," snaps Tyrone, and rushes off again.

Steve arrives back at the taxi office shoving a large, and very heavy amplifier. He tells Ryan it's the answer to his problems. Ryan doesn't look very pleased, however.

Beth sees Tracy in the cafe, and learns that Emily has thrown her out. Beth says she and Amy can come and stay at her flat.

Mary comes into the cafe and Roy tells her that Hayley will be staying for the dance contest, but he will still go to the Elgar concert. "Oh," says Mary, delighted, "so it'll just be you and me?"

Chesney's sitting at home looking glum. Katy comes back, and before Tyrone can get a word in she tells him she's been shopping and happened to pass the church and just happened to see the vicar. He thinks he could fit the Christening in next week, and she's spoken to Anna who says she'll help with the food. They'll have the do at home, but obviously they'll have to buy the food, and a new outfit for Joseph and she herself could do with a new pair of shoes. Tyrone looks worried and sighs.

Tina is in with Tyrone. As he puts the cot together, he eventually confesses that Kirsty has gone, walked out and left him. He blames himself, it was first Molly and now Kirsty. Tina tells him he has been let down by people who didn't deserve him. Tyrone reckons that Kirsty was out of his league in every way. She was beautiful, clever.... "A control freak and a bully," says Tina, and tells him that in the long run it will probably be the best thing. Tyrone wonders how she can say that. He loved her, he loved the future they had together and now that's all gone. "I've lost my child - again, and you think that's good news?" He gets really angry and tells her to go. Once alone again he kicks the cot, and then starts crying.

Friday 10 August

Hello, and welcome to a Friday's first episode.

Michelle's wearing high, ugly heels as she heads for the factory. Of course, that's only my opinion and maybe they're very trendy. . . That doesn't matter to Norris, who's just intent on letting her know that Ryan owes him 20 pounds, without actually specifying why or where or how this debt was incurred. Steve arrives and stops the discussion by handing over 20 quid, to Michelle's slight annoyance. Steve says she can buy him a drink later.

Carl's having a smoke out in the yard which, oddly, has a fence instead of a wall between it and the next yard. Carl tries to initiate a chat with Tyrone but Tyrone's not in a good mood. He's in a throwing-bits-of-cot-into-the-yard mood.

Back in the house, Carl moans to Sunita about Tyrone and tells her he can't go with her and the kids to the seaside because he's got to look for work.

In the cafe, Anna, Hayley and Roy discuss the planned trip Roy and Mary are making to Malvern. Roy's a little worried that he should stay behind to watch Hayley in her dance competition but she assures him she's fine and will be back at lunchtime to wave him off. Once she's gone, Anna questions Roy quite forcefully about exactly where he's going and why he and Mary will be too tired to drive the 100 miles back after the concert.

Steve comes in and admires Amy's football strip. She's taking part in a holiday football programme. Steve's taking her there and Tracy's picking her up. Tracy claims she's not feeling well but Steve refuses to agree to pick up Amy.

Tina arrives at the garage and discovers Tommy hasn't been to check on Tyrone. She stomps across the street. Behind her, Chesney explains how much he needs his van and Kevin promises to look at it.

Tina bangs on Tyrone's door and goes inside before he has a chance to stop her.

In the factory, Julie and Hayley and Beth discuss the dance competition. Beth wouldn't want to be in such close proximity to Norris, though Hayley says he's quite different on the dance floor. Rob shoos them back to work. He wants to know whether anyone's heard why Kirsty isn't at work. This segues into a discussion of honorifics on the maternity ward and he has to grumble them back to work again.

Tina's made Tyrone a cuppa and tells him to look on the bright side. "What? Like, me life's falling apart but at least I won't have any more bruises?" He tells Tina he'd rather have the bruises than lose Kirsty and his baby. He's sure Kirsty won't be back. She's too proud. There's a knock at the door. It's Hayley, asking about Kirsty. Tina tells her only that Kirsty won't be at work today and then shuts the door. Tyrone realises that everyone will think Kirsty's had the baby and will bother him about how she's doing. He determines to make sure everyone knows Kirsty has left him.

Back at the factory, Rob's annoyed that Hayley hasn't come back with a better explanation.

Tracy arrives at her parents' house. She complains to Deirdre that she doesn't feel well, has a pain in her belly and has had diarrhea. She thinks maybe it's down to eating in the cafe, but Ken diagnoses it as Lazyitis. Then he refuses her request to pick up Amy.

At the garage, Kevin's trying to tell Chesney that the kindest thing would be to put his van out of its misery. Tyrone stomps across the road, followed by Tina. He tells them to listen up, then realises that's American and tells them to just listen. "Kirsty's left me. She's gone and she's not coming back." He's noticed Julie earwigging and tells her to make sure everyone in the factory knows.

Julie's in the factory office telling Rob and Michelle. Then she tells the other machinists. Beth realises Tina was in Tyrone's house and puts one and seventy-three together. After all, Kirsty's heavily pregnant and it's only another woman who would force her to leave in that state.

In the cafe, Mary's arrived to help Roy with his packing. Anna's appalled, so she's even angrier when Tracy comes in and loudly asks whether anyone's had food poisoning from the cafe.

Carl's at the taxi office getting confirmation that he won't get his job back. He asks if Steve can make sure Sunita knows he's been in. That's his job-hunting over for the day. After all, everyone deserves a holiday, he says.

Tyrone's absolutely furious that Chesney's unfixable car is still in the way outside the garage. He wants it moved to make way for proper customers.

Deirdre and Ken wait for Tracy and Amy. They're taking Amy for lunch and can't work out why Tracy is later. She's not answering her phone. Ken thinks it's Tracy paying them back for not being sympathetic or helpful.

In the pub, Beth tries to get Kirk to find out whether Tina's having an affair with Tyrone but Kirk sees Tina and Tommy kissing and is sure she isn't seeing Tyrone. He doesn't get a chance to deduce much else because Rob tells him he's late with an order which needs delivering this afternoon.

Steve's on the phone being cross-examined by Deirdre when Michelle comes in with Amy. Amy was walking home on her own. Steve sends Amy off to Ken and Deirdre's so they can take her out to lunch.

Hayley arrives at the cafe to discover that Mary has helped Roy with his packing. "Just you try and stop her!" he says. When Roy and Hayley go out to the van, Anna keeps Mary back in order to lay down the law. She warns Mary to keep her hands off Roy, though Mary professes innocence.

Steve calls round to find Tracy has been asleep. She says she feels awful. Steve doesn't really believe her and shouts at her.

Carl arrives home and is startled to find Sunita and the kids there. Rats! He'd planned a relaxing day lazing around. Sunita says they didn't want to go without him and can wait until he's earning. He says he's had no luck in his job hunting.

Tyrone's had Chesney's van towed - though I'm not sure why they'd hire someone else when the garage has its own tow-truck. Tyrone's sort of manically gleeful - from now on he's only going to do what he wants, he boasts.

The senior Barlows and Amy arrive back from lunch at the cafe. Inside the house, Tracy lies unconscious on the floor.

The end for now.

Deirdre is in total panic mode, and being totally annoying, as are all Coronation Street characters at times of crisis. Instead of just letting the paramedics get on with their job, she is all "Will she be alright?" "What's wrong with her?" etc. etc. At least she isn't angry with the medical staff yet, as most characters tend to get in an emergency, which really annoys me. As they cart Tracy away however, Deirdre shouts at her that she will be alright because her Mum's here. Whew I bet that's a load off Tracy's mind.

Tyrone is sitting staring into space, and doesn't jump to attention until the smoke detector goes off, indicating that the toast he has under the grill is on fire. Getting things under control, he manages to burn himself, which doesn't help his mood at all. Just as he is throwing a wet tea towel over his cremated meal, there is a knock at the door. Flinging it open, he snarls at Kevin, asking him what he wants. Kev has brought him a kebab, which he refuses, but his partner is not taking no for an answer, and tells him that if he is going to lash out at people, he might as well do it on a full stomach.

Stella is opening a gift of a blouse that Leanne has given her for her birthday. She loves the gift, but is a little down because she hasn't spent her birthday on her own for a very long time. Leanne assures her she isn't on her own, that she has her daughters for company. Stella is obviously missing Karl, and Leanne tells her not to waste a single thought on that man, as he is not worth it. She goes on to tell her that she has a table booked at the Bistro this evening for the two of them to celebrate her birthday, and that she has already arranged for Tina to cover, so no arguments.

Kevin is asking Tyrone if he is coming back to work, but Ty tells him he isn't in the mood. Kevin tells him he shouldn't have had Chesney's van towed, but Tyrone protests that it was a write-off. Kev points out that it wasn't his decision to make, it was Chesney's. Tyrone, knowing Kevin is right, asks him why he is losing his temper so much these days, as he never used to be like that. Kevin tells him it is because he is worried about Kirsty and the baby. This touches Tyrone where he is hurting, and with a breaking voice he tells Kev that all he ever wanted was a family of his own, but he feels he is not in control of his own life any more.

Kevin tells him that there is only one thing he can do, and that is that he must fight for his baby. He must get in touch with the police, hire a solicitor, contact Social Services, do everything he can to fight for his child. Tyrone pulls himself together and agrees that this is what he is going to do, and he is going to stop being such a flamin' pushover.

Deirdre is sitting beside an unconscious Tracy's bed in the hospital, and unconscious or not, they have managed to get some urine samples from her, along with some blood, and are sending them to the lab, telling Deirdre they will know more when they get the results.

Deirdre asks if it has anything to do with her having undergone a kidney transplant years ago, and is told that it is too early to say, but her symptoms do indicate a kidney infection and possible blood poisoning. The doctor goes on to say that her lungs are not working well, so they will be keeping a close eye on her blood oxygen levels. Deirdre asks her for her prognosis, but is just told they are doing everything they can.

Hayley is rushing along in the rain, and is accosted by Norris who wants to know if she is all set for the dance competition tonight. She assures him she is, and he reminds her not to forget her deodorant, as there is nothing that spells loser like a sweaty contestant! She clip clops off to pick up her costume, as the taxi will be picking them up in five minutes.

Michelle and Steve bump into each other, and confirm arrangements for that drink tonight. Steve tells her that he is glad Ryan is back (unlike me then!) because it's been ages since they spent this much time together. I think he means him and Michelle, not him and Ryan! Just then he takes a call from Ken, who fills him in on the news regarding Tracy, and asks him to pick Amy up from Emily's and take her to the hospital. Steve tells Michelle he will call her later.

Mary and Roy have reached their destination, and while Mary replenishes the windscreen washer for the journey home, Roy frantically tries to find a spot where he can get a signal to call Hayley, without any luck. He is having misgivings about being there at all, and feels he should be supporting his wife on her important day. Mary assures him that everything is exactly the way it should be, and they are going to enjoy the concert. She firmly links her arm through his, and leads him away.

Steve and Amy have arrived at the hospital, and Amy is anxious to see her mother. Deirdre explains to her that she is asleep, but she can go in to see her with Granddad.

After the break, Michelle meets Ryan coming out of the Corner Shop. She tells him that Steve has cancelled their date tonight because of Tracy. Michelle is skeptical, and suggests that Tracy is probably faking it. She goes on to say that the client she had been meeting tonight had also cancelled. Ryan tells her that the stuff he bought in the shop would be enough for two, as long as she cooks it.

Back at the hospital, Amy has seen her mother, and Ken is about to take her home. Deirdre confides to Steve when they are alone that she is really scared that Tracy is going to die.

Mary is on the phone to the hotel in the intermission, and breaks the news to Roy that they have no record of the booking she made online. She goes on to say too that they are full because of the recital. Roy is not only upset about that, but upset that she could get a signal on her phone and hadn't thought to tell him. He suggests that they leave for home immediately then, but Mary laughs that off, saying they still had the other half to listen to, and sleeping arrangements were no problem, because she had put fresh sheets on the beds in her motor home this morning. (At least, I think she said beds in the plural). I must say at this point, that wherever they are filming this, it is absolutely beautiful.

Leanne and Stella are ready to head for the Bistro, with Stella wearing her new blouse. She is making an effort, but her mood really hasn't improved, so Leanne suggests they start the evening with a drink.

Chesney and Gary are having a game of darts, and Ches is crying the blues about losing his van. He hasn't told Katy about it yet, and doesn't know how, as she has her heart set on Joseph's Christening, but with him not being able to make any money without his van, he has no idea how they will afford it. Tyrone comes in and apologises to Chesney, telling him he has spoken to the bloke who took it, and has his word that he won't do anything to it until he hears from Chesney. Ches is not cheered by this, because the bottom line is that he still has no van. All Tyrone can offer is to ring round people and try to find him a good deal, but this doesn't help either, because Chesney is totally skint.

Back at the hospital, Tracy is coming round. Deirdre thinks this is a good sign, but the doctor warns they won't know for sure until they get the results back. Oh here we go - I knew it! Deirdre angrily shouts at the doctor, asking when the results are going to come back, as they had been waiting for hours. Steve tells Deirdre not to upset herself, Upset herself? What about the doctor? Deirdre angrily turns on Steve then, telling him she has every right to be upset, her daughter could be dying here. Steve thanks the doctor, who assures them they will let them know the results as soon as they have them. Deirdre then turns the blame onto herself, saying that Tracy had been saying she wasn't feeling well, and if anything happens to her, she will never forgive herself.

In the Bistro, Stella and Leanne are being greeted by Lewis, who knows it is Stella's birthday as Leanne had mentioned it when she booked, and tells them he will bring them a glass of complimentary champagne to celebrate the occasion. (Incidentally all you Lewis fans, Nigel Havers has just signed a new contract to stay until 2013, putting paid to the rumours that they were going to kill him off soon) Just then, who should walk in but Karl and Sunita. Stella is furious, and is all set to leave, but Leanne won't let her, saying they are not going to chase them away, after all, they were there first. Karl then spots Stella, and he too is uncomfortable, and wants to leave, but Sunita won't have it either, and tells him that Stella needs to accept that they have all moved on, and so does he.

It's the end of the concert, and Roy is rushing back to the camper van at top speed, ignoring Mary's protests that she wants to stay for the encore. Roy is on a mission, a mission to head home right now, as he has no intention of spending the night in the camper van with Mary. He pleads with her to take him home, saying that this trip has taught him that Hayley means everything to him, and even though he won't be home in time to watch her compete, he wants to be there to celebrate if she has won, and commiserate if she has lost. It finally dawns on Mary just how much in love with his wife this man is, and she tells Roy that she prays that one day she will find a man who cares as much about her as he does about Hayley, and mutters she only hopes Hayley realises how lucky she is.

Sunita gets up to go to the toilet, which means she has to walk past Leanne & Stella's table. Just as she passes, Leanne says loudly, while looking at the menu, "Quite a selection of tarts" Sunita turns and suggests they act like grown-ups. Stella tells Sunita not to talk to her, and Sunita replies that she doesn't want a fight. Leanne retorts that she flamin' wants a fight. Both Stella and Karl try to calm their companions down, as does Lewis. Stella asks the latter to stop them bothering them so they can celebrate her birthday in peace. Karl looks taken aback, he had obviously forgotten that it was Stella's birthday. Stella tells him she didn't expect him to remember, when he is so busy watching his life go down the toilet. Karl then grabs Sunita and tells her they are leaving. Sunita protests, saying they shouldn't let her win, but Karl tells her they have done enough to her, without ruining her birthday as well.

Tracy is coming round again, and wants to know what has happened to her. Deirdre tells her she has a kidney infection, but it will be cleared up in no time. Tracy replies that she always was a rubbish liar, and goes on to apologise for all the horrible things she has done over the years. She then tells Deirdre she wants her to go home, because if she is away all night, Amy will know things are serious, and she doesn't want to worry her. Isn't it amazing that she can come out of a coma, and even know what time of day it is? Deirdre doesn't want to leave her, so Steve offers to stay with her all night so she can go home.

Norris and Hayley are heading home, over the moon because they won second place, and have trophies in their hands to prove it. Just as Hayley is saying to Norris that she wishes Roy could have been there to see it, up pulls the motor home and Roy flings himself out of the door and into Hayley's waiting arms. Norris remarks to Mary about the fact that they have only been away from each other a few hours, but Mary, who now understands the deep feelings between Roy and Hayley, explains to Norris that when you truly love someone, any time apart is too long.

Roy is so pleased for Hayley, and tells her that he should have been there at her moment of triumph. She asks why he is back so soon, and he tells her it is a long story. She said she loves long stories, and that he should join them in the Rovers, where they were just heading to celebrate their win. Roy agrees, and invites Mary to join them, but she declines, and sadly watches them head into the Rovers, excitedly chatting to each other.

Back to Steve and Tracy in the hospital room. Tracy wants to get things off her chest, as she obviously thinks she is going to die too. She apologises to Steve for all the diabolical things she has done over the years, and tells him that it was all because she couldn't have him, that she always loved him, and always will. He replies that she has a funny way of showing it, but she assures him it's true nonetheless. He then tells her that she has given him Amy, and he will always be grateful to her for that, as she wouldn't be the beautiful girl she is without her. He goes on to say that part of him will always love her because of that. Tracy latches on to that last sentence, and tells him that maybe all this has been worth it, just to hear him say that. She then tells him she needs to sleep, and makes him promise not to leave her while she is sleeping. He promises, and she happily goes off to sleep.

Steve apologizes for canceling his date with Michelle. She asks after Tracy and he says he was back and forth to the hospital all weekend with Amy. They still don't know if she's going to recover. Michelle says she's taking the day off and waiting for a furniture delivery. He promises to make it up to her.

Sunita comes strutting around the corner, seen by Stella who fires off a few insults. It rolls off her shoulders.

Across at the garage, Tyrone tells Kevin he's going to fight back. Kirsty can't just walk out with the baby. Kevin asks if he's reported her missing yet and thinks he's got as good a chance as any of getting custody. Tyrone turns to go to the office to call the cops.

Chesney is gazing at his sleeping baby. Katy asks if he's off to the market yet. Ches wants to spend the day with his family. Katy says she's got to make a few phone calls about the christening but then maybe they can all go to the seaside. Chesney gulps and makes excuses about having to empty out the van and the traffic will be mad. He suggests the park and swings.

Tracy is sleeping. Ken is craving a hot drink but isn't allowed to bring it in the room because it has to stay sterile (yet they're not wearing protective suits!). Deirdre tells Ken to go stretch his legs but she's staying put. Tracy stirs and pulls at the oxygen mask. She asks after Amy and is told Steve is bringing her in later. Immediate she starts glorifying Steve and looking forward to the rest of their lives. The doctor arrives with some good news. Tracy's stabilizing and the antibiotics seem to be working. Her kidney is starting to work again. She's not out of the woods but it looks promising. Deirdre is ecstatic.

Roy knocks on the door of Mary's camper van and getting no answer. Across the road Gary greets Chesney and Katy and lets the cat out of the bag about the knackered van. Mary hollers through the door for Roy to stop knocking, implying she doesn't want to see anyone. Katy is hollering at Chesney and the baby is crying as they unlock their door. Forget the park! He protests, he was just trying to find the right time to tell her. That doesn't help her newly darkened mood.

A man comes into the cab office and Ryan is there. Apparently it's a drug dealer, someone Ryan knows. He wants a cab so he can do his deliveries. Ryan freaks out and tries to get the man out of there, refusing him a car. The dealer offers him a bit of his new stash as commission. Ryan hesitates but says no. The man thinks he's got him interested.

Outside, Steve sees Michelle who tells him she's already got her furniture and needs someone to help her move the sofa around. Back in the office, Ryan tells the dealer he's skint. Michelle comes in, having overheard the last bit and realizes who the stranger is, and loses her temper, rightly so. Steve throws the guy out before he calls the police and orders him to stay away from the business. Ryan is the target for Michelle's rage even though he protests, he didn't buy anything and wasn't going to. Liar! She screams.

After the break, He's telling Steve his mother is never going to believe him. The man is an idiot he met in a club and the guy came here on his own initiative. He didn't call him to come over. Steve is skeptical. Ryan insists he doesn't do drugs. Steve explains Michelle is just worried about him and promises to talk to her. He makes Ryan promise that he doesn't do drugs. Promise given (liar!)

In the cafe, Sunita finds Karl going over the job section in the newspaper. Hayley is chattering about her dance competition to Roy who clearly has things on his mind. He admits he was thinking about Mary who was rude. He can't understand the change in her. She couldn't have gone off chess that quickly. Hayley is curious to hear that Mary would have a habit of taking long periods to contemplate her next move. Hayley's suspicions are roused. Roy thinks he must have said something on the Malvern trip that put her off and mentions the hotel mix up which further raises Hayley's suspicions. She asks for all the details about the hotel mix up. He says the hotel says there was no booking and when he says that Mary offered the used of the camper van, Hayley turns a bit green. He says Mary had the beds made up and ready but agreed they could come home when he wanted to return to see her. He's completely oblivious of her motivations but Hayley isn't and decides to nip out for a moment.

Steve has come to talk to Michelle. He doesn't think Ryan is lying about this guy, Niall, who really did seem to come out of the blue. Michelle says Ryan swore his cocaine use was a one off but now he knows a dealer? Steve reckons Ryan was saying no and isn't stupid. Michelle hopes Steve is right but she's very worried. He sits down with her and points out that if Ryan is in trouble then "we" have to help. She is appreciative.

Hayley is knocking insistently on Mary's door. Mary looks scared but answers the door. She tries to back away but Hayley confronts her. She has designs on Roy and never did book the hotel. Mary protests that she did indeed. Hayley accuses Mary of having made a play for Roy. She denies it but says even if she did, he only has eyes for Hayley. Uh oh, Hayley thinks she really did come on to him. Mary invites her inside.

Back to Michelle who is worried Ryan's gone off the rail because of something she did. Steve assures her she was a great mom. Ryan is not a junkie, he's just experimenting and they're dealing with it. He diverts her by complimenting the new sofa and he agrees to move it for her.

In the camper van, Mary admits she is a walking disaster when it comes to men and she's always making a fool of herself. She admits that she and Roy made a connection through chess and music and culture. She admits to an infatuation but points out that Roy is devoted to Hayley. Mary knew she didn't have a chance. Hayley is worried and scared and feeling threatened even though Mary's words are reassuring that Roy stayed steadfast.

Steve has moved the sofa. Michelle apologizes for dumping her problems on him. He says he was an idiot to mess her around. She leans in and kisses him, knowing he's been hoping for it for awhile. They both admit they've been wanting each other. She tells him she's also got a new bed and they scurry in to christen it.

Tyrone has done a small job on Paul's car. They chat as they walk to the car but Tyrone spots a police car driving up and hurries over.

In the hospital, Deirdre and Ken are sitting with her and encouraging her. She goes on again about Steve. She wants to fix herself up a little for Steve. She talks about what he'd said and thinks Steve wants to make a go of it again. He said he'll always love her. Meanwhile, Steve and Michelle have clearly found the bed to their liking. He's off to take Amy to the hospital to see Tracy and will see Michelle later and meet her in the pub.

Kevin knocks on Tyrone's door later after the police left. Tyrone says he didn't feel like working. He thinks it was a waste of time. Kevin invites him for a pint and Tyrone sighs and agrees.

Steve and Amy arrive in Tracy's room. She's had her hair brushed and lippy on. She gives Amy a hug and tells Steve he's next.

Ty tells Kevin that he doesn't have any legal rights yet and Kirsty left him so it doesn't count as "missing". The cops clearly don't think it was a police matter. He might never see either of them again.

Tracy has grabbed Steve for an awkward hug. She insists that his presence was instrumental in helping her pull through. He's very uncomfortable with all her gushing. She wants to plan a future together. He still doesn't apprise her of the truth and lies that he meant it when he said he will always love her. (Spineless idiot!) She assures him they can make it work and be a proper family.

Steve is staring dejectedly into his pint in the Rovers when Michelle bounces in, full of good cheer. She can see he's not happy but Steve puts it down to the hours spent by Tracy's bedside with nothing to talk about. Michelle asks how she is and Steve tells her she's sitting up complaining. "So everything's back to normal then," says Michelle. She drapes her arms round Steve's neck and suggests he goes round to hers so she can cook him something nice. Steve looks slightly awkward and says he promised to drop some stuff round at the hospital so he'll have to do that first.

Chesney and Katy are at home and he is down in the dumps over their finances. Katy tells him it's not his fault about the van but Chesney feels bad because it means they can no longer afford the christening. Then, like a knight in shining armour, Gary walks in dangling a set of keys. He offers to lend Chesney his van until he gets his sorted out. Chesney doesn't want to accept but Gary insists, telling him that if you can't help your family out then who can you help? Katy is chuffed to bits and gives Gary a big hug.

At Sunita's, Karl has got himself dressed up to go out. Sunita wants to know where he's off to so Karl tells her a mate of his might have a job for him. He's a bit elusive when Sunita asks what the job is but she wishes him luck and gives him a farewell kiss.

Ken, Deirdre and Amy arrive back at the house after visiting Tracy. Amy is asking where they're going to live when Tracy gets out of hospital because, as she explains to her grandparents, Tracy has told Amy that she, Steve and Tracy are going to be a family again. Ken gently tells Amy that nothing's been decided yet, much to Deirdre's annoyance. "That's right, burst her bubble," she grumbles at him but Ken is wise enough to know that she could be disappointed. Amy pipes up that Daddy told Mummy that he loves her so Deirdre tells her that both her parents love her and, no matter what happens, they'll both be there for her.

Anna's in the Kabin buying herself a bar of chocolate. Norris confesses that his favourite indulgence is a can of whipped cream on top of his cocoa. Just as they're having a chuckle together over their secret treats, Mary comes in and looks quite put out. Anna leaves and Norris observes that the wander returns and comments that it's a shame that Mary had to miss the end of the concert. He starts to tell Mary how Roy's absence from the dance competition played havoc with Hayley's Pasa Doble and then suggests that if Mary's staying she should put the kettle on. But Mary says that she's not staying. In fact, she's decided the time has come to move on and she's going to hit the road. Norris is completely bewildered and asks her where all this has come from. None of it makes sense to him. Mary doesn't really explain and simply says that she'll be leaving in the morning and will go where the fancy takes her. Norris gets quite agitated and suggests she should go in the back for a cup of tea so that they can talk about it but Mary is insistent. Norris can't quite bring himself to say what he really means so he tells Mary that there are folk who will miss her. "Are there?" she asks hopefully. "Well yes," he replies. "Roy and Emily". They look at each other awkwardly again and Norris reaches out and shakes Mary's hand. She walks out, leaving Norris looking visibly upset.

In the Rovers, Rob, Eva and Stella are discussing whether they'd come back as a man or a woman in their next life. Stella says she'd choose to be a man as they always manage to wake up in the morning looking as good as they did the night before whereas sadly it's not the case for women. "Some women maybe," says Rob, looking at Stella but Eva thanks him, thinking the compliment is directed at her. The subject moves to Karl and Eva starts on about how he's a lying, cheating scumbag so Stella asks if they can talk about something else. Rob comments to Stella that her daughter's a bit fiery and Eva agrees, telling him he'd better not upset her and then gives him a smacker on the lips.

Kevin and Ty are playing a game of darts. Kevin says it's Ty's round but Ty wants to call it a night so Rob offers to play instead. Eva looks on contentedly but we get the feeling Rob's just looking for an excuse to get away from her.

Elsewhere in the Rovers, Chesney, Katie, Gary, Izzy and Kirk are enjoying a drink together. Kirk is keeping them all amused with his theories on the benefits of chanting (yes, really). When there's a lull in the conversation, Chesney and Katie take the opportunity to ask Izzy and Gary if they would be Joseph's godparents.

Deirdre and Amy have gone to the chippy to pick up their dinner. They have Eccles with them so Deirdre leaves Amy outside with the dog with strict instructions that she's not to move until Deirdre comes out. Across the street we see Steve coming round the corner and Michelle walking towards him, laden with shopping for the meal she's going to cook. They stop and have a chat. Steve apologises for everything that happened earlier and when Michelle tells him that it's O.K. he says that he must be the luckiest guy in the world to be given a second chance with her. They fall into each other's arms, not noticing that Amy is standing just behind them watching everything that's going on. Steve opens his eyes and looks horrified when he sees his daughter looking at him. "Why are you kissing her?" Amy asks, accusingly.

Steve is carrying a screaming Amy around the corner. Lloyd sees them and wants to know what's going on so Steve puts Amy down and she runs into Lloyd's arms. Steve tells Amy that he'll take her round to Ken and Deirdre's in a minute but first he needs to explain something important to her. To Michelle's horror he says to Amy that she mustn't tell anybody about what she just saw. Lloyd asks what she just saw so Amy tells him that they were kissing, pointing to Steve and Michelle. Then Amy accuses Steve of telling lies. "You told mummy you wanted us all to be together, so why were you kissing her?" she asks, glowering at Michelle. "Good question," says Michelle, giving Steve a look.

Deirdre comes out of the chippy to find Amy has disappeared. Meanwhile, Steve is telling Michelle the situation's complicated. Then he tells Amy that her mum's poorly so it's best for her if they keep things secret for a bit. Lloyd tells him he's unbelievable. Michelle is in full agreement. Steve tells Michelle he can explain what happened so she says she'll be back in ten minutes and his explanation had better be good. At that moment Deirdre comes round the corner looking for Am. Steve quickly bends down and begs Amy not to say anything to her grandma. He asks her to do it for Daddy. Deirdre comes up to them and tells Amy how worried she was when she'd disappeared so Steve explains that it was his fault because they were having a little chat. Amy has her mouth clamped shut but she doesn't look happy.

Gary is leaning against the bar in the Rovers. Izzy can see he's looking pensive as she goes up to him. He explains to her that although he's really made up about the fact that they've been asked to be Joseph's godparents, it's made him think about all the things that they'll never get to do. Izzy says she understands and takes hold of his hand.

Steve is waiting for Michelle in the cab office. When she turns up, Lloyd makes himself scarce. Michelle starts by asking Steve if he has any idea how much he hurt her when he went behind her back with Becky. She tells him she can't go through that again. Steve then tells Michelle that he said a load of stuff in the hospital to try and make Tracy feel better. However, he swears he never told her that they were going to get back together. Michelle replies that in that case it's about time he put her straight and then she leaves.

In the cafe Roy and Hayley are closing up for the evening. Hayley is trying to reassure Roy that he'll find someone else to play chess with. At that moment Norris comes in to ask them if they've heard the news. He tells them that Mary is leaving for good. Hayley looks upset as she realises it must be her fault but Roy says he should take the blame. Norris just looks confused. Hayley asks Norris to leave so that she can have a private chat with Roy. She goes back in and tells Roy how she went to see Mary and accused her of having designs on Roy. Now Roy is the one to look confused because he doesn't know what Hayley's talking about. He tells Hayley that Mary is just his friend. Hayley explains that it might be how he sees it but Mary has feelings for him. She tells Roy that Mary confessed as much to her.

Over at Ken and Deirdre's, Amy comes downstairs in her pyjamas. Deirdre can see she's upset and gives her a hug. Amy asks her grandma a question. She wants to know if someone tells you a secret and asks you not to tell and then you tell that secret whether that's bad. At this point Deirdre is all ears, especially when she finds out that the person who told Amy the secret was her father. Deirdre reassures Amy that she can tell the secret to grandma because she'll make sure nothing bad happens. So Amy spills the beans and then asks whether she did the right thing by telling her grandma. "Oh yes, love, you certainly did," says Deirdre through gritted teeth as she gives Amy another hug.

Ty's still in the Rovers. He orders another pint from Tina but she's not sure whether he should have one. Kevin comes over and says he'll take him to get some food. He tries objecting but Kevin insists and Tina tells Kevin to look after him.

Back in the cafe, Hayley is still trying to get Roy to understand what Mary was up to with the plans for the concert but Roy is adamant that she had no ulterior motive. Hayley is nearly tearing out her hair with frustration that he can't see it. Just then the phone rings and Roy goes to answer it. After he puts the phone down he explains to Hayley that it was the hotel in Malvern to apologise for the mix up. It appears that Mary did book two rooms after all and the fault was all theirs. Hayley looks contrite and Roy observes that the free dinner for two which they've offered as an apology won't be much of a consolation to Mary now.

Karl has returned home from his job hunt and Sunita meets him on the doorstep. He's been unsuccessful so Sunita offers to cook him something nice to cheer him up. At that moment Rob walks past and Karl asks if he's got any work at the factory. At first he says no but then he thinks again and says he might have something in packing if Karl could do a bit of delivering too. Karl says he has a clean licence so before we know it he's being told he can start on a trial basis tomorrow.

Gary and Izzy are round at Anna's having a cup of tea and a chat. She tells them they should be chuffed at being asked to be godparents but Gary explains that with not being able to have kids of their own it's a bit like rubbing salt into the wound. Anna is sympathetic but points out that it needn't be the end of the road and that there are other options as far as kids are concerned. Anna goes upstairs to check on Faye and Izzy and Gary continue the conversation. Gary tells Izzy that his mum's always saying that adopting Faye was one of the best things she ever did. Izzy says that they could look into it at least and, in true soap style, Gary replies that there's nothing like the present and that they should go off and check it out on t'internet.

Steve has returned to the hospital to visit Tracy. She's still attached to various drips and looks pleased to see him. When she hears he's brought her in some spare underwear she tells Steve that just shows how close they are. He doesn't look convinced. Tracy starts talking about their living arrangements when she's allowed home. She puts Steve's look of total panic down to his reluctance to toss Lloyd out of his room to make space for Amy and tells Steve it's alright because she's asked her Mum if they can all go back there to live. As we see Deirdre arrive in the corridor outside, Steve is telling Tracy to stop what she's saying. Deirdre listens in as Tracy tells him that she really thinks that they're meant to be together and this whole experience has made her see things clearly. "I love you Steve," she says as she takes hold of his hand. Steve looks awkward and comes out with the old chestnut of needing a bit of space and time on his own. When Deirdre overhears him telling Tracy that he's just not ready to be with anyone right now, Deirdre bursts through the door and accuses Steve of being a lying toerag. Tracy looks confused as Deirdre asks if Steve's going to tell her or if she should. Before he has the chance to answer, Deirdre tells her that Steve's been seeing someone else. Tracy wants to know who, Steve is too busy squirming to answer, so Deirdre fills in the gaps for her, adding that Amy saw Steve kissing the face of Michelle in the street. She doesn't spare any of the details, including the fact that Steve asked Amy to lie about it. Tracy is upset and angry and hates Steve for what he's done. Steve still loathes Tracy (but at least he's now being honest about it) and Deirdre hates Steve for what he's done to her daughter. So things are more or less back to normal. But Tracy gets in one final dig as Steve walks out. Through her sobs she shouts after him that Amy's going to hate him too for what he's done.

Thursday 16 August

Hi I am not Anne who is away and here is a quick update for the above episode, written by Ellen Taylor and directed by Duncan Foster with copyright remaining the property of ITV Studios.

Izzy and Gary are off to the adoption agency - they are wished well by the family.

Roy did not get much sleep - he has realised that Mary did perhaps have some feelings although Anna believes she should go both Roy and Hayley regret the actions which have caused her to decide to go.

Steve and Michelle are walking along the Street discussing watching a dvd back at hers with some popcorn. Other action is also being anticipated by Steve. He makes Michelle laugh and they are about to cuddle until he sees Deirdre. Steve has to suffer a tongue lashing from Deirdre and both ladies call him a coward. Michelle cancels tonight's action film.

Rob has employed Karl who turns up for work and the former winds him up - and leaves Kirk to show him the ropes - Kirk then shows him both sizes of box they use. A little later Eva spots Karl and wants to know what he is doing - once Kirk tells her she storms off to look for Rob.

Along at the Kabin Emily is trying to convince Doris to he should stop Mary leaving - who then comes in for some wine gums and he charges her £1. Emily hopes she will come back to visit. He offers her the wine gums on the house.

Deirdre re-assures Tracy - the latter cannot believe that Michelle has taken Steve back. Deirdre tells Tracy she made it too easy for Steve - and Tracy should face facts and Steve does not love her back. He comes in with a box of flowers and offers to explain himself.

Hayley finds Mary waiting to leave and she goes into the mobile home and tries to apologise. Mary has a rant at Hayley and feels they all treat her badly as scary Mary - but Roy had not done that and had treated her as a normal person and Mary also apologises as she did overstep the mark. Hayley asks her not to go.

At the end of the adoption briefing the lady in charge wants to know why they want to adopt and Izzy admits to a recent miscarriage. She tells them they have to wait twelve months before progressing. Izzy asks about a criminal record and it seems that a conviction for assaulting a police officer indicates instability and she reckons they would not be able to progress an adoption. She apologises and Gary and Izzy are stunned that this route is closed.

After the break Tracy is giving Steve a hard time - as usual Steve is in the wrong - but then where else is he ever going to be with Tracy. So why Michelle asks Tracy who then says that Michelle is taking advantage of him. Tracy accuses him of a mid-life crisis and finally Steve stands up for himself and Michelle and he leaves.

Mary and Hayley are drinking black tea as the milk has been given to the ginger tom - the mangy one. Mary knows it must have been difficult for Hayley and they agree that Roy understands outsiders - and Hayley admits that she was jealous of the connection which Mary and Roy had made.

Gary and Izzy argue in the Street - but Gary feels that Izzy has made it impossible for them to have kids - and that has made him angry. Katie is walking past and hears the end of the argument - but Izzy will not explain.

When Rob returns to the office Eva gives him a telling off for employing Karl - notwithstanding that Rob is on the phone. Karl also gets a telling off from Eva.

Deirdre returns and tells Tracy to forget about Steve and get better. Tracy agrees that she needs to get her full strength back so that she can get her own back on Steve and Michelle as they are so going to regret crossing her.

Gary is bringing Katie up to date on events and the only option left is surrogacy. So the closest he will get to being a father will be as a godfather to Joe. Katie suggests that she could be a surrogate and he tells her not to be stupid. Gary tries to dissuade her - but Katie keeps talking about providing him and her sister with their own child.

Hayley brings Mary back to the cafe where Roy is clearing up. Mary has decided not to go away after all, so perhaps they can resume their chess games and then Hayley tells Mary not to make any moves she wouldn't and laughs telling them she is joking. Mary and Roy start talking in chess terms and there are smiles all round.

Izzy turns up at Katie's and she and Gary tell Izzy that Katie will be her surrogate. Izzy is completely against it and tears Gary off a strip. Izzy and Katie argue. Izzy is called an ungrateful cow by Katie who thinks the whole idea is bonkers. Then Gary and Izzy argue over the miscarriage - he really wants to be a dad and Izzy admits that she really wants to be a mum. Roll credits.

Friday 17 August

We begin this Friday episode with Gary and Izzy in the cafe. She's very grumpy and although they are supposed to be having breakfast together, she says she has to help Katie with the food for the christening and goes off to do that. Roy comes over to see whether the food is OK and Gary snaps at him, though he apologises immediately.

In the pub, Eva's late for work but doesn't care. She's still annoyed that Rob has hired Karl but Stella tells her there's no point in losing her own job over it.

Tina's buying a gossip magazine in the Kabin and is worried when Norris doesn't give her a lecture about it. When she leaves, Norris turns to the magazine racks with a sigh and starts to tidy them. He's surprised when Mary walks in. He thought she'd be well on her way. "Have your plans been revised?" They have. "In that case, I'll put the kettle on!"

Owen turns up to bring Katie a whole lot of drinks for the christening party. He tells her how happy she's made him, not realising Izzy is in the kitchen and can hear him. He apologises and tells her he's sure "all this" will happen for her one day.

Tracy's ordering her mother around as she packs to come home from the hospital. Deirdre's worried about all this business with Steve and Michelle. She doesn't want Tracy to get upset. "I'm not going to," Tracy says. "I'm going to get even."

In the backyard, Izzy apologises to Katie. She says it's not her problem, though Katie reckons it is because she's Izzy's sister and wants to see her happy. Izzy protests that Katie's too young. "Now you're starting to sound like him," Katie says, referring to Owen. She points out she'll be 18 in a few weeks.

Hayley's in a really good mood and positively bounces down the stairs in the factory. She and Kirk have a conversation about what to wear to the christening. Karl listens, amused, and says Chesney's done all right for himself because Katie's a good-looking lass. Eva overhears this and snaps at him. Rob comes across to check how the Cartwright order is going. It's vital that it gets there on time if they are to get any more orders from Cartwright's. Karl promises they've got it sorted.

Steve and Lloyd sit together on the paving outside the taxi office and smoke. Steve reckons he could save 50 quid a week if he gave up. Maybe he could join a gym. Lloyd laughs and asks him about Tracy. Steve admits he's not looking forward to her coming home. Michelle arrives kisses Steve, saying he tastes like an ashtray. When Steve goes into the office to answer the phone, Michelle admits to Lloyd that she didn't think she and Steve would get back together. Lloyd says he's a good bloke but he's got more baggage than Heathrow. Michelle knows he means Tracy but says she isn't scared of Tracy.

Owen's in his suit and sees Gary in his, running into the medical centre.

Gary bursts into Dr Carter's consulting room where Izzy and Katie have explained the surrogacy plan. Gary's a bit annoyed because he got a text from Izzy saying she was going to see the doctor and thought she was ill. Dr Carter explains that Izzy would have to undergo the hormonal stimulation and egg-harvesting and fertilization procedure as with IVF but any resulting embryo would be implanted in Katie's womb. So the baby would be Izzy and Gary's biological child. But he warns that as well as being intrusive, the procedure would be expensive - a minimum of seven thousand pounds.

Hayley's off to the christening and Karl tells Kirk he might as well go now. Karl sticks the labels to the completed orders and then Rob calls him into the office. Eva sneaks down the stairs and switches the labels.

As Gary, Izzy and Katie head for home in the pouring rain, Katie says Chesney will understand and give them his blessing when they explain things to him. Gary pleads with Izzy not to give up the idea. He'll find the money somehow. Izzy realises she's running out of time to get changed for the christening.

Kevin's reading some do-it-yourself instructions as Sophie holds a very smiley baby Jack. He suggests she take Jack for a walk so he can get on with the work.

Baby Joseph isn't smiley. He's distracted by the boom mike, as are most babies on TV shows. Owen calls upstairs to Katie to hurry up. Anna asks Kirk if he'd like a cup of tea. "Have you got any lapsang souchong?" he asks. No. In that case his answer is No. Izzy and Gary arrive. Owen's suspicious about why they're late.

Rob takes Michelle to the pub for lunch. They're almost there when a taxi pulls up and Tracy and Deirdre get out. Tracy snaps at Michelle for stealing her husband while she's lying on her deathbed. Michelle snaps back. Rob says: "If you two are going to start wrestling can you wait until I get my phone on camera mode?" Insults are traded - evil, devious, spiteful, cow - with each threatening bodily harm to the other. Deirdre drags Tracy inside and Rob tries to get Michelle into the pub but she says she needs to walk round the block to calm down first.

The christening attendees arrive at the church. Fizz is quite taken with the "fit" vicar. Before they go in, Owen drags Gary aside and asks what's going on. He saw Gary running into the medical centre. Before Gary can tell him anything, Anna comes and drags them inside the church.

In the pub, Tina tells Lloyd she doesn't find Rob at all attractive - he's got no sense of humour. Eva comes in and Rob tells her she's welcome to join him and Michelle for a drink but Eva refuses. Rob gets a phone call. It's clear one of the customers is ringing to complain about getting the wrong order delivered. He tells Eva that Karl has screwed up and races off. Something tells Tina that Eva might have had something to do with this and she admits she did.

In the church, the vicar's speaking but that doesn't stop Owen demanding that Gary tell him what's going on. Gary tells him they went to the doctor to talk because they've found someone willing to be surrogate for them. Owen glares at him as Anna shushes them.

Eileen's trying to read when she hears banging and drilling noises coming from next door. Paul arrives home as she leaves the house. She says she's going back to work because it's too noisy. He doesn't think it can be much - just Kevin doing a bit of DIY. And then he hears it!

The vicar's leading the prayers and responses and Owen demands to know why Gary didn't tell him anything earlier. Gary says it's because the doctor advised them to think about it and that's what they're doing - no decision has been made. But he lets slip that Katie was with them. As Anna tries to shut them up, the vicar asks if everything is all right. All falls quiet as Owen demands to know why Katie was there. Gary says it's because she's offered to have their baby for them. Everyone present is shocked, but nobody more than Chesney.

First line of this episode: "OVER MY DEAD BODY!!" and I am sure you can guess that those words were yelled by Owen Armstrong. Everyone in the church sits in shocked silence as Owen once again disrupts everything and makes a total prat of himself. Gary tells Owen that it's not his decision to make, but the irate one firmly believes that any decision made by either of his daughters should have his approval first. Things almost get physical with Owen pushing Gary, and Gary screaming back at Owen that Katy offered, nobody asked her to do this. The only person obviously enjoying this unexpected floor show is Faye, who has a front row seat. Finally, mild mannered Chesney takes charge and screams above everyone else that they all need to belt up and have some respect!

Rob is on his mobile in the Rovers placating a customer who has had his order go missing. He assured him that it will be with him within the hour. After hanging up, Tina lets him know that she knows it is probably something to do with Karl because Eva told her. Michelle arrives, and Rob puts her in the picture on Karl's supposed screw-up, and tells her it is sorted now, with the exception of speaking to Karl about it. He questions her about her altercation with Tracy, and she tells him that she is just one of the problems that comes with dating Steve McDonald. Rob asks her what she sees in him, and all she can think of is that he makes her laugh.

Chesney is now questioning Katy outside the church as to what exactly is going on, and Owen jumps on that, saying he can't believe that nobody has even told Chesney. He relishes in being the one to fill Chesney in on the fact that his girlfriend is planning to have Gary's baby. Katy quickly apologises to Ches, saying she didn't intend for it to come out this way, and that it would totally be Gary & Izzy's baby, not hers, and it was their chance to make a difference. Owen is still screaming at Katy that it would be the biggest mistake of her life, and Gary tries to intervene, telling him that it really has nothing to do with him. Oh that's it, Owen's really angry now, and lunges at Gary, but Anna gets quickly between them.

The guests are feeling embarrassed, and decide it's time to go home. Chesney is upset at this, and tells them he wants them all to come to their place for the reception, it's Joseph's day, and he has promised him a party. He then turns to Owen and tells him that he is not welcome. Owen has the audacity to be surprised, saying he is the only one who has been talking any sense. Izzy agrees with Ches, saying that he is doing Katy a huge disservice by calling her a child, that she is more grown up and kind hearted than the rest of them put together, and nobody has ever made a more generous gesture for her sake than Katy has.

Owen tells Izzy that she is just as deranged as her sister, and storms off, followed by Anna. Katy thanks Chesney for standing up for her, but Ches tells her that he didn't do it for her, takes Joseph from her and walks off too.

Karl is skiving off from the factory and has gone home for a little lunchtime rumpeh pumpeh with Sunita, she is a little concerned that he might get into trouble, but he's not worried as he tells her that he and Rob are best mates. (Soap Opera Phrase of Doom alert). Back in the factory, Rob is trying to reach Karl, and is getting very annoyed that the 'Muppet' still isn't picking up his calls.

Steve arrives telling Michelle that he has heard from Deirdre about her fight with Tracy. He is all for going over there and putting her straight, but Michelle tells him not to, as he will be playing right into her hands, and she will use Amy against him. Michelle gets called away momentarily, and Rob comes back in. He tries to lecture Steve about allowing his wife to give Michelle a hard time. Steve points out that the last person to try to put his wife in her place ended up dead, and questions his right to lecture him on his relationship. Rob points out that he and Michelle go back a long way, and he would hate to see her get hurt. They reach an understanding, but Steve is gurning and muttering under his breath unbeknownst to Rob.

The Christening guests have shown up for the feast as requested, but are feeling pretty uncomfortable with the atmosphere in the room. All of them that is with the exception of Kirkeh, who is just tucking happily into the cake. Both Chesney and Gary are brooding, lost in thought. In the kitchen, Izzy and Katy are discussing the day's events, and agree that their father behaved unforgivably in the church. Katy thanks Izzy for the kind words she had said to her father about her, and Izzy tells her that she meant every word of it. She goes on to say that their father was totally wrong, and that if Katy is really certain, she is definitely interested in taking her up on her offer. They are so busy talking that they didn't see Chesney standing in the doorway, with his mouth open in shock when he hears Izzy's words. He just can't take it any more, and apologises to everyone, but the party is over, and would like everyone to leave - now! Izzy asks if that includes them, and he snaps "Especially you two!" As everyone makes a quick exit out the door, he hisses to Katy that they need to talk!

After the break we are back in the factory, and everyone is surprised to see the Christening guests back so soon. Karl also comes in, and Eva delights in telling him that Rob has been looking for him. On entering the lion's den, he is immediately attacked about where he has been, and Karl lies that he was held up in traffic, he is then attacked about the order mix-up, and he denies that he could possibly have got it wrong. Rob is angry, and tells him he needs to take responsibility for his mistakes. Michelle intervenes, and gives him his next job that must go to Stockport, Rob sarcastically tells him that it's Stockport, not Stockholm. Karl is angry now, and demands an apology, which of course is not forthcoming from Rob, who tells him just to get back to work. So Karl retorts that he doesn't have to take this from the likes of him, Rob spits back that he definitely doesn't have to because he is fired! Karl throws down his keys and storms out, Eva looks on with a smirk on her face and makes a sarcastic goodbye remark as he walks out the door. She is totally delighted!

Owen is asking Anna - several times - if she knew what Katy was planning, he finally believes that she didn't. She tries to point out that his behaviour wasn't appropriate, that he had ruined Joseph's Christening, but he is unrepentant, that the end will justify the means if it results in Katy not ruining her life. He points out that what you see with him is what you get. Anna agrees, and tells him that what people see is a loud mouthed bully. He looks shocked, and tells her that she is not being fair. She agrees, but tells him he must admit he could have handled things a whole lot better. He can't see that though, saying that whatever he did wrong, doesn't make him any the less right. Anna just cannot get through to him that he is handling this situation all wrong.

Katy and Chesney are alone now, and it looks as if Joseph has gone to bed. She starts the conversation by apologising to Ches, but he is hurt that she hadn't spoken to him about such a huge decision. She replies that she was going to, and would have if Gary hadn't opening his mouth at the Christening. Ches is not having that, saying it's nobody else's fault, that he thought they were a team, and they should have talked it through before speaking to anyone else. She apologises again, and tells him she will make a brew, then she will talk, and he should listen.

Eileen comes into the living room and is amused to see Paul asleep on the sofa with headphones on. She can't resist, and turns the Ipod up loud, making him jump out of his skin. When she asks what he thinks he is doing, he tells her that he really needs his sleep while on nights, and can't get any with Kevin working on his house next door. He has finally had enough, and opts to go next door and reason with him. Kevin is not about to be reasoned with however, and tells him he will be making even more noise next week when he starts sanding down his floorboards. Paul points out that he has to sleep during the day when he is on nights, but Kevin points out that he has to do it during the day while Jack is at the child minder. After some argy bargy back and forth, it's stalemate and Paul returns home and Kev goes back to his tools.

Sunita has picked up the twins from a birthday party, and is just herding them into the house when Eva passes by, of course she can't wait to let Sunita know that Karl has lost his job, and also lets her know that she is more than a little happy about it.

The discussion about Katy carrying a baby for Izzy and Gary is continuing in No. 5. Chesney doesn't like the idea at all, pointing out the problems she had after Joseph was born, but she reminds him that she was coping with looking after him, this would be totally different, it wouldn't be her baby, all she would be doing is carrying it and giving birth to it, the rest would be up to them. She pleads with him that she wants to do this for her sister, that she deserves it, and asks him to please think about it some more. He agrees to do that, and they hug each other.

When Karl comes home, Sunita is waiting for him with the job section of the newspaper. She tells him about Eva delightedly filling her in on the news. Karl has sussed that she was behind it, but tells Sunita that even if he could prove it, Rob would never believe him over her.

Fiz has come over to check on things, and finds Chesney and Joseph in the back yard. (I think the little baby who plays Joseph must be very fond of Jennie McAlpine who plays Fiz, because he gets all excited when he sees her, and bounces up and down in Chesney's arms, she doesn't ignore him either, and touches his hand the whole time she speaks her lines) Chesney asks her what she thinks about the idea of Katy being a surrogate mother, and she replies that she is pretty confused about the whole thing. He admits he is too, and has told Katy that he will think about it. Fiz tells him that Katy can't ask for more than that, she goes on to say that she thinks he has handled the situation brilliantly, and that Joseph is very lucky to have him as a dad. Ches replies that he is the lucky one, and although he still thinks that Owen was wrong to do what he did, he can't help sympathising with him, because he is not so sure he would react any differently had it been his daughter. They both agree that being a parent is very hard.

Back in Number 7, Karl is feeling very sorry for himself. He tells Sunita that he feels he is dragging her down, and that if he was her, he would be gone. She tells him that she loves him, and that she is in it for the long haul. He responds by telling her he loves her too. (Do we believe him? Like heck we do! If Stella snapped her fingers she wouldn't see him for dust!)

Izzy has arrived at the yard to see her father taking out his frustrations on a poor unsuspecting door with a hammer. She asks if they can talk, and starts by apologising for what happened at the church. He accepts her apology, figuring she has come to her senses about the whole thing. However, she quickly tells him that she hasn't changed her mind, she is only sorry about the way he found out about it. He turns away, saying there is nothing else to discuss then. She pleads with him to listen, that she too had been skeptical at first, and had underestimated Katy, just as he was doing. She points out that this might not be the solution, but surely it was worth investigating. She is crying now, and is begging him to at least keep an open mind about it, because for the first time in her life, she wants something for her, and asks if it is too much to ask of him. He replies that it is, if it means trampling her little sister in the process. She sobs that he knows she would never let Katy get hurt, and he says that he knows she wouldn't intentionally, but that he needs her to say she will drop this lunacy. She tells him through her tears that she can't promise that, and if he can't accept it, she wants nothing more to do with him, they are finished. She turns and wheels away, Owen tries to say something to make her stop, but the words won't come out, and he watches her go with tears in his eyes.

Anna's calling a family meeting and orders Owen to attend. He's still in full-on rant about the whole situation and reckons Katy's in "cloud cuckoo land". Anna argues that Katy is doing a very generous thing. He points out that the baby would be Anna's grandchild and that's why she's supporting them. She spits that he's going to be a lonely old man, pushing away everyone, his family and his girlfriend. He asks if she thinks he is supposed to say nothing? She agrees he is entitled to an opinion but shouting the odds isn't the way to do it. She tells him the meeting is at 10. No shouting!

In the factory, Fiz has told Rob that Izzy won't be in and tells him it's "women's troubles". He doesn't quite buy it but isn't arguing the point. Fiz tells Hayley that everyone's up in arms about the surrogacy offer and not everyone is keen. Hayley thinks it's a very kind offer, just the same but it is indeed a tricky situation. Fiz thinks Anna's going to bang a few heads together at the family meeting. Over at the machines, Julie declares it's Brian's birthday and she wants to do something special for him. Cue lots of naughty suggestions with innocent Hayley offering the idea of a nice cardie and some stay-pressed slacks. She makes my head hurt sometimes, does Hayley! Rob wants someone to do some packing for a few hours and volunteers Beth. Eva looks smug that Karl isn't being hired back.

Karl has returned home from the job centre but was unsuccessful. He has had an invite from his mate Tez who's invited him to Amsterdam for a stag do weekend. He's truly fed up and Sunita comforts him. She thinks they need to put on a happy face for Eva so she knows she's not got to them. She brightly chirps that they're happy and nothing Eva can do will change that. Karl looks less than chirpy but appreciates her efforts.

Anna has pastries in the hopes that that may soothe the tempers, as the family meeting begins. Owen arrives to see Gary, Izzy and Katy looking at him balefully and he starts straight in, accusing Katy of having her stroppy teenager face on. She points out she's angry because he ruined the christening. He does apologize for that. Anna's grasping any positive point she can.

Ryan is chatting to someone over the phone at Streetcars. Lloyd hears him saying to the person on the other end that he's working there to help out. Slumming it, really. He's chatting with his eyes shut so he doesn't see Lloyd or hear him (he's got a headset on). Lloyd pulls the plug and hollers at Ryan for flirting with the customers and blocking the switchboard which immediately starts ringing straight away. Ryan, to wind up Lloyd, tells the customer she has a really sexy voice.

Back to the meeting, Izzy and Katy are telling Owen they're taking it really slowly and considering everything. Katy wants Izzy to be a mother like she is. Owen is concerned that Katy is too young and she won't be able to give the baby up. Katy says she knows the baby won't be hers. Owen zeroes in on a quiet Chesney. He says he'll support Katy but it doesn't look like he's all that keen.

Tina has brought lunch to Tommy and Tyrone who isn't there at the moment. They discuss Tyrone and Tommy reckons Tyrone hasn't heard from Kirsty yet. Tina thinks an invite to their flat for a curry might be a nice thing to do. Tommy agrees.

Across the road, Paul has come home from his night shift and sees Kevin taking supplies into the house. He tells Kevin he really needs to sleep but when Kevin suggests earplugs, he shudders and says he can't put anything in his ears. Kevin says he can't give the DIY a rest while the childminder has Jack (Um, doesn't she have Jack every day while he's at the garage anyway?) Paul makes vague threats to expose him as the neighbour from hell but it rolls right off Kevin.

Owen sees Chesney heading to the cafe and calls out to him. Owen admits he's having a hard time getting his head around it and reckons Chesney is too. He starts pouring on the sympathy and gets Chesney to admit he is worried it's going to end badly. Hearing what he wants, Owen plays the understanding card.

Michelle and Steve encounter Tracy and Amy. Tracy is aggressive and Amy is silent but then says that Tracy told her that Ryan is a dangerous druggie. Oh great. The adults start arguing and insulting each other and Michelle insists Ryan is trying hard to conquer his problem. Steve asks Michelle to leave and then starts to holler at Tracy (in front of Amy) who plays the high moral ground, insisting she's protecting Amy.

Owen and Chesney are continuing the conversation. He thinks Chesney needs to be the voice of reason and put his foot down. Katy is too good and could be taken advantage of easily. Then he starts talking about how dangerous it is being pregnant, all the possible complications. Of course Katy is young and healthy but people do die. Chesney is alarmed but even though Owen says not many do, it does happen. Owen asks Chesney to try to make Katy see sense before it's too late!

After the break, Rob is in the street just as Sunita and Karl comes outside. Sunita runs over and asks him to rethink sacking Karl. Karl points out that Eva was the one that messed up the orders and made it look like it was his fault. Rob doesn't believe Eva would do something like that. (He *is* new here, after all). He refuses to give Karl the job back.

Anna offers to treat Owen in the cafe for making such an effort. He thanks her for her efforts, too, at least his daughters are speaking to him. (until they find out he's been making Chesney his puppet) She is still on board, though and thinks he could be a granddad again in a year! He looks thoughtful.

In the factory, Izzy is telling Fiz how reasonable Owen was at the family meeting. The rest of the girls are having a cuppa in the kitchen and talking about Karl. Beth doesn't think much of Karl and Julie sighs about Brian. They didn't get together until he was free of his first marriage and was most definitely worth the wait, bedroom-wise. Rob comes out of the office and overhears Eva admit to the girls it was her that got Karl sacked and asks her for a word. She follows him and declares that Karl had it coming. Rob hisses that it lost money for the factory and hurt their reputation. She grudgingly says sorry and he storms off and doesn't sack her for a reason that was entirely justified.

Ryan now has the music on and is singing loudly to it. Lloyd comes rushing in and reveals that the radio was on, Ryan was broadcasting his mini-concert and none of the drivers could get through back on the radio and the customers can't get through either. Lloyd is fed up and tells Ryan to "do one" (I think he sacked him) and he'll pay him for the rest of his shift. Result, says the oik.

Anna is reading a surrogacy story in a magazine that is supposed to be "Chit Chat" but the Chit part looks suspiciously like a different word that doesn't start with C. (odd camera angle and foldy magazine cover). She reads out the story about a woman that carried her sister's baby and it was all happy endings. Tommy and Tyrone come in to see Tina who invites Ty to come over for curry to keep her company while Tyrone works. He's reluctant.

Paul accepts a cup of tea from Eileen. He's not had much sleep and is complaining. She's bought him earplugs and he freaks out when she tries to put them in. She calls him a wimp but he shies away every time she comes near. Kevin's machinery starts up again and he hollers in frustration. She chases him into the kitchen welding the earplugs!

Steve brings Ryan back for an apology. Steve defends Ryan and says they're supposed to be helping him. Lloyd accuses Ryan of being a wind up merchant. Steve keeps talking and Lloyd can see he's outnumbered.

Paul is still moaning about Kevin. Eileen and Paul wonder if the sudden silence means Kevin's done for the day. They sit on the sofa and talk about DIY. Paul talks about when he was allowed to paint his bedroom as a teenager and he picked black. The floor grinder starts up again. Eileen loops an arm gently around Paul's neck and pulls him over to put the earplugs in.

Chesney is shoring up his nerve to confront Katy. When she comes in with the magazine, all excited, he has to interrupt with his rehearsed speech. Izzy and Gary are taking advantage, exploiting her good nature, manipulating her, emotionally blackmailing her. She insists it was all her idea. He points out she's saying she's tired all the time now, what will it be like to look after Joseph while she's pregnant. Mini-Owen says she can't do it, it's not fair and it's too much to ask.

Izzy and Gary are in good spirits. She's outside the corner shop, tucking into a chocolate bar and he's joking to her about the mother-to-be eating for two. But just as Izzy's telling Gary how she plans to give up drinking to support her sister once she's pregnant, they witness Chesney coming out of the house and Katy shouting after him that it's her body and she can choose what she can and can't do with it. Oh dear. It looks like all may not be going according to plan.

Over the road, a car pulls up outside the garage and Ty and Tina climb out. Ty tells Tommy that it's a repair job he's been to collect and he gave Tina a lift home as she was weighed down with a load of shopping from Freshco's. Tina reminds Ty he's going round for a curry later but as she walks off we see Ty's stricken face as he glances down and spots a sticker inside car's back window. It reads "Baby on Board".

Gary and Izzy have gone round to see Katy. She's telling them that Chesney won't let her have the baby for them. She's insistent that she hasn't changed her mind and she won't allow Chesney to make her choose between him and Izzy. Izzy's only concern is for Katy and her relationship with Chesney but Gary's more worried about how it will affect their plans. He points out that Chesney didn't say anything before when they had their big chat and Katy stomps up the stairs complaining that Chesney's just being selfish. Izzy points out that it's a really big deal and that she can't take it on if she doesn't have Chesney's support. But Katy's desperate to help her sister and points out how brave she's been all her life, especially when she lost the baby. She says that she's doing this for Izzy and if Chesney doesn't like it then it's his problem.

Tracy comes out of the corner shop just as Ryan approaches from across the street. He makes a rather poor attempt at flirting with her. She gives him short shrift but at that moment Michelle comes out, sees Ryan consorting with the enemy and shouts at him to come here. Ryan makes out they're having a friendly chat and tells his mum Tracy's a good laugh and they should have her round for tea one day. Michelle looks at him as though he has several screws loose.

In the factory Rob is slaving over a hot desk when Eva goes in to the office apologise to him. He's really not interested in talking to her but she carries on anyway and tells him that if he wants to take Karl back on she won't make things difficult for him. She then tells Rob that she's got old fashioned values and that if you're with someone she believes you should be honest and loyal and shouldn't do anything to hurt them. She's referring to Karl's behaviour of course but Rob hasn't got the time or inclination to discuss her mother's love life. As he goes back to punching the numbers on his calculator, Eva tells him that she'll be in the Rovers later and would like to buy him a drink. He doesn't reply so she tells him that she'll be in there anyway and would really love to see him.

Izzy and Gary are in the cafe, discussing the baby situation with Anna. Izzy suggests that her Dad might have been intimidating Chesney and Gary agrees that he'd be made up if Chesney didn't want to go along with the idea but Anna says that Owen has promised he won't interfere and she believes him. Gary tells Anna that Katy's said she's going ahead anyway but Izzy glowers at him and says that doesn't mean it's the right decision. So Anna decides it's time for another family pow wow. She says she'll cook something nice for everyone's tea and instructs Gary to get Owen and Chesney to go round later. Sensing what he's like, Izzy tells Gary he mustn't go sticking his oar in with Chesney. He promises he won't but he tells Izzy that like Katy said before, it's her body, not Chesney's.

Eileen's out in the street talking to Kevin about his on-going building work when Paul comes storming out. He's furious because he's overslept and Eileen didn't wake him. Kevin rather insensitively makes a joke about kipping in the daytime. Eileen wants to know why Paul didn't set his alarm. It turns out he did but he didn't wake up because she'd made him wear earplugs. He jumps in his car and drives off in a huff.

Over at the building yard, Chesney's talking to Owen. He tells him he talked to Katy but she wouldn't listen. Owen says he's not talking loudly enough. Chesney explains how Katy said it's her body and for her to decide what she does. So Owen tries another tack and suggests to Chesney that things could go wrong. We then see Gary coming up the stairs just at the moment that Owen is telling Chesney that there's only so many times Katy could go through pregnancy and they might want more children of their own. At this point Gary walks in and a row erupts between the three of them. Owen tells Gary to get lost and threatens him with losing his job if he doesn't leave. In exasperation Gary does as he's told, leaving Chesney and Owen to continue their cosy little chat.

In the Rovers, Eva walks into the bar dressed up to the nines. She's wearing one of her plunging necklines and she's curled her hair. Stella tells her she looks gorgeous but Eva wants to know if she simply looks gorgeous or whether, in fact, she looks likes she's trying to look gorgeous. Stella realises that this almost certainly has something to do with Rob. Eva decides the curls are too obvious and goes off to undo some of her earlier handiwork.

Michelle comes into the pub with Steve. She's telling him how Tracy and Ryan were trying to act like best mates earlier in order to wind her up. She asks Steve if he knows how soon after someone's been discharged from hospital it's acceptable to give them a slap. He replies that in Tracy's case, it's the hospital car park.

Over at Anna's, Faye is trying to set the table for seven as per her mother's instructions but Gary tells her he knows for a fact that there won't be seven people sitting round the table. Anna comes in with the shopping and wants to know if Gary got hold of Chesney. From his reaction she can tell something's happened so she sends Faye upstairs to play on her laptop. Before she goes, Faye points out that there's only so much being sent out of the way that she can take. Once she's out of the room Anna starts in on Gary, assuming he's had a go at Chesney. When Gary finally gets a word in he tells Anna how he overheard Owen trying to poison Chesney against the idea of Katy carrying Izzy's baby. Anna can't believe it and tells Gary that Owen gave her his word but Gary tells her that it's Owen who's trying to mess things up and not Chesney.

Anna's on the warpath. She goes marching round to see Owen at the yard to give him a piece of her mind. He tries telling her that Chesney came to talk to him but she's having none of it. She tells him that Chesney should be talking to Katy, not him, and then storms off before Owen has a chance to reply.

Ty is still at the garage, working on the car he brought in earlier. Tina turns up to tell him the curry's ready but Ty says it's a complicated job and he could be some while. Tina offers to help with the car to speed things up but Ty admits he's really not in the mood for socialising and working on the car is just an excuse. He says he's sorry but he means it.

Out in the street, Anna finds Chesney sitting in the bus stop. She tells him he has to go home and sort things out with Katy. Chesney tells her he's already told Katy what he wants to say but Anna corrects him and points out he's only told her what Owen instructed him to say.

Eva's moping behind the bar, waiting for Rob. Stella suggests she goes and watches telly and she'll let her know if he turns up. Then, lo and behold, who should walk through the door but the man himself. Eva perks up immediately and offers to get Rob a drink but he reacts as though she's offered him a glass of rat poison. Stella comes over and suggests he should allow Eva to buy him a whisky chaser, at which point he's the one to perk up; Rob clearly sees Stella as a more appealing proposition than her daughter. However, he allows himself to be led across the room by Eva, stopping on the way to have a chat with Steve and Michelle. Before Eva knows what's happening, Rob's started to tell a funny story and settled himself down in the booth with Steve and Michelle, leaving Eva to look like a spare gusset in a knicker factory. She wanders disconsolately back towards the bar where her mother tells her she needs to have patience. Elsewhere in the Rovers, Izzy and Gary are still talking about the surrogacy. Gary insists that Katy wants to have the baby for them but Izzy tells him that what Katy wants is to make her happy. Izzy tells Gary it would be so wrong if their happiness caused Katy to lose hers but Gary is sure that won't happen.

Meanwhile, back at their house, Katy and Chesney are talking about the same subject with Anna. Chesney brings up the fact that she could die in childbirth and Anna realises that was probably an idea planted by Owen. Chesney and Katy continue their argument so Anna steps in and sits them both down. She says it's clear they both love each other, they belong together and that they're both on the same team. She tells Katy that some of Chesney's fears may be over the top but that's thanks to Owen. Anna points out to Katy that what she's planning to do is a really big deal and she needs to stop being angry at Chesney for being concerned. Katy and Chesney both agree that they love each other but Katy says she loves Izzy too and wants to make her happy and to have what they've got.

Everyone seems to be angry today. Now it's Paul's turn. He's arrived back from work and is thumping on Kevin's front door. Kevin answers it and is also annoyed because Paul's knocking has woken baby Jack. But Paul's concerns are a lot greater; he tells Kevin he could have cost him his job. At that moment Eileen comes past, wanting to know what's going on. Paul tells them that because he overslept and was late, someone had to cover his shift, he's lost a day's pay and now they're "talking disciplinaries". Kevin thinks he's over-reacting but Paul points out that being late if you're a fireman is a lot more important than if you just tinker around with cars. The implication of his words is not lost on Kevin.

Tracy sees Ryan coming out of the chippy and goes over to tell him that she was impressed with the way he pretended to be bezzy mates with her to get at his mum but he retorts that he doesn't need any respect from her since she accused him of being a drug dealer. He tells her he's clean but she ignores his protests and tells him in a very suggestive manner that anytime he wants to flirt with her to wipe the smile off his mum's face he should call her. Ryan's left looking slightly puzzled, as well he might.

Tina has decided that If Ty won't go to the curry then the curry will have to go to Ty and she turns up at the garage with a meal for two all prepared. She tells Ty that even miserable people have to eat. He looks grateful and as they start to eat, Tina tries telling Ty that hard though it is, he'll meet someone else, maybe someone even better. She cites her relationship with Graeme as an example but Ty points out Graeme doesn't have her baby. Tina tells Ty that he will have rights to see the baby and that he shouldn't have to put up with what Kirsty did to him. Ty just looks at Tina and tells her that Kirsty loved him. "She did, you know," he insists.

In the Rovers, Eva's still moping. She tells Stella that after Steve and Michelle left, Rob went straight over to the jukebox and he hasn't spoken a word to her. Stella's advises Eva to tell Rob how he feels so when he wanders over to the bar she takes her chance. She tries tempting Rob with the offer of going upstairs to watch Karl's box set of Battle Star Galactica. He tells her he's more of a horror fan himself so Eva tells him suggestively that he'd get that if he saw her without make-up first thing in the morning. Rob responds by saying he's just put a quid in the jukebox so Eva tells him to listen to his five songs and then come upstairs if he fancies making friends with her ...

After Eva's gone, Stella goes over to Rob in a very businesslike fashion. He orders another pint and she asks if it's to take upstairs. Rob deliberately misinterprets this and tells her she's being forward. "I meant to Eva," says Stella, in very matter of fact manner. Rob continues to flirt outrageously and Stella tells him she's old enough to be his mother and reminds him that Eva's her daughter but Rob replies he likes older women. When it's clear he's not getting anywhere, Rob leaves. He asks Stella to tell Eva that he had to go because he had too much on his mind.

Katy and Chesney are holding Joseph and having a cosy chat on the sofa. Katy explains to Chesney that part of the reason she'd like to help Izzy is down to guilt. When Izzy was at her healthiest she missed out on her childhood because she was too busy helping her Dad to bring her up Katy after their Mum died. Chesney tells Katy that's not her fault and it doesn't mean she owes her sister anything but Katy says she wants things evened out a bit. She tells Chesney that it's not as though she's not listening to him or that she doesn't love him because she does. She says that if it meant choosing between Chesney or having Izzy's baby then she'd choose him. These words finally swing it for Chesney and he tells Katy that if she really wants to do this for Izzy then he'll take care of her and he seals his promise with a hug and a kiss.

Over at Anna's she's still looking livid when Owen walks through the door. He tells her he's been keeping out of her way to give her a chance to cool off. She reminds him that he'd promised to keep out of it with Chesney and Katy. He says he's sorry but that's not enough. Anna asks him if he's got any idea of how his bullish behaviour is affecting the family. Owen tells her that what the kids are doing is wrong. Anna isn't backing down and tells him that if he carries on like this Katy will wash her hands of him and then he'll have no influence whatsoever. He still isn't listening and tells Anna that they're his daughters. "My, my, my," Anna shouts back at him. "They're themselves, Owen, they're themselves. At this rate you'll end up with none of them." She finishes off by telling him to get out of her sight. She's fed up with trying to steer a way through for him, only to have it thrown back at her. Owen finally gets the message and goes home.

Thursday 23 August

We begin with Anna blanking Owen as she steps out of the cafe and he works outside his yard.

Tommy and Tina discuss Tyrone. He says Ty is obsessed with Kirsty but Tina thinks the best thing is for them to help distract him, keep him company and wait for him to get over Kirsty.

Paul is very snappy as he and Eileen leave the house. He's still furious about missing payment for his shift, Eileen tells Marcus.

Rob sees Stella looking at the ads in the Kabin's window and they make flirty little jokes about an ad for German tuition.

Tommy sees Marcus and asks for his help finding Kirsty through the maternity unit's records. Marcus refuses. It's unethical. Tommy pleads that he needs to tell her about Tyrone, who's not doing well at all, but Marcus is adamant.

Paul meets Kevin in the cafe and complains about the noise and about being out of pocket. Kevin, in his turn, moans about not getting any sleep after Paul woke baby Jack. Sally and Gail are in the cafe having a cuppa and overhear the conversation. Gail tells Paul that he's welcome to go over and sleep on her sofa if he wants. She's very flirty, with a twinkle in her eye and using her little-girl voice. Ick!

The garage is still locked so Tommy goes over to see Tyrone. He discovers Tyrone's slept on the sofa because he couldn't be bothered getting up to go to bed. Tyrone tells him the police have found Kirsty. She's safe and well but doesn't want Tyrone to know where she is. Tommy asks what his plan is for finding Kirsty and getting her back but Tyrone's only plan is to mope. Tyrone tells him to back off and mind his own business.

Gail, her voice an octave higher than usual, gets Paul settled on the sofa.

In the pub, Izzy's worried that her desire for a baby is causing problems in Katie and Chesney's relationship. Izzy feels guilty but Gary thinks the blame should be on Owen. Owen arrives and Gary snaps at him but Owen says he's the only person listening to Ches. Katie and Chesney then arrive to tell the others they've talked about it and they're going ahead with the surrogacy plan. Chesney thanks Owen for his advice. Hmm. . . Owen might have to think of another plan.

Marcus takes Liam to the cafe because Liam fancies some chips. Tyrone's hardly touched his meal and offers his chips to Liam. Marcus tells him he's sorry to hear about Kirsty and Tyrone thanks him for his concern but barely shows any emotion at all.

Eva and Rob are in the factory office. He thinks he deserves a rollicking but Eva's in a forgiving mood. He tells her he knows how much Nick hurt her by blowing hot and cold and that's why he thinks they should break up - before he hurts her and while they're still mates. Eva's horrified and sort of slumps out of the office, but Rob is suddenly more cheerful.

David discovers a sleeping firefighter on the sofa and screams "Fire!" - which Paul doesn't think is funny once he realises he's not at work. He cheers up when he realises he's had four hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Kevin chats with Owen and agrees with him the surrogacy idea is a disaster waiting to happen. Owen says Katie's only 17 and the scheme will mean curtains for her and Chesney. Kevin comments that Owen will have to take care it's not curtains for him and Anna. "It doesn't matter what the kids are getting up to - don't lose Anna."

David's in the pub and teases Eileen about finding Paul on the sofa. Eileen is not amused.

Marcus goes to the garage to see Tommy. He says he can see why Tommy's so worried about Tyrone. Tommy shouldn't say where he got the information from, but Kirsty's booked in to do a tour of the maternity unit this evening.

Owen goes into the cafe and orders a coffee and a cuddle. "Eighty P and no chance," says Anna. She tries to tell him that sometimes his opinion is not called for but Owen thinks not giving his opinion would be a dereliction of his duty as a parent. Anna points out that she also has a duty as Gary's parent. Owen goes behind the counter and tells her that he loves her and doesn't want to lose her. He asks if she will help him get his head round the surrogacy thing. Anna will.

At the hospital, people gather for the tour, watched by Tommy. Kirsty arrives and when she sees Tommy her first instinct is to look for Tyrone. He tells her Tyrone needs her. "So, you're a bossy cow. But there are worse things you could be," he says. Tyrone is stuck and she's the only one who can do anything about that. The group is asked to move off on the tour and as Kirsty leaves the room, Tommy tells her she looks like Tyrone - dead behind the eyes.

Paul arrives in the pub and cheerfully kisses Eileen. He says he got four hours' kip and Eileen asks how come. He puts it down to the ear plugs but Eileen reveals she knows the truth. Paul says he didn't tell her because he knows she and Gail don't always get on.

Rob comes in and is surprised Stella's serving him politely. It's clear she doesn't know he's dumped Eva so he tells her. "We'll be better as mates."

Katie, Chesney, Gary and Izzy are all in Fiz's front room discussing their surrogacy plans. Owen arrives. He's come to say he's sorry. He says he doesn't mean to be a party pooper but things come out wrong and he'd like their help to come to terms with this. Izzy says he should try harder but she and Katie thank him for coming.

Tommy's waiting for Kirsty at the end of the tour. He's stalking her till she sees sense. Kirsty tells him her relationship with Tyrone is complicated. It was difficult to walk away but it was the best thing she could have done for Ty. Tommy disagrees. When he looks at them he just sees two halves of one couple. He can't just watch Tyrone going down with his spirit broken. Kirsty cries as Tommy pleads for her to come back. "I knew you were a control freak. I didn't have you down as cruel."

The End.

Friday 24 August

Me again! Here's the first Friday episode.

Tina and Tommy walk towards the street talking about Tyrone. Tommy agrees with her now. It's time Tyrone put Kirsty behind him. They see he's at work and the garage is open. They tell him they're there for him if he needs them.

Izzy and Katie talk about their plans. Katie is annoyed at any objections that she's too young. After all, she's mature enough to have had a baby. Izzy says she's grateful but doesn't want to take advantage of her sister.

Tommy's singing along to the radio in the garage but Tyrone turns it off. That was Kirsty's favourite song. He says he gets angry when he thinks about what she's done but it's only a few seconds before he misses her again.

Sunita suggests to Karl that they go out for a drink. He's skint but she's got some cash. She suggests it's time they went for a drink in the Rovers. Dev can have the kids.

Paul arrives home and meets Kevin on the pavement. Kevin's only stopped working so he can go and get some more pads for the sander. Paul calls across to Gail and asks if her sofa is free again. Eileen's furious, especially when Gail offers him something to eat as well. One eye on Eileen, Paul refuses the offer. When he goes inside, Eileen tells Kevin the world's smuggest woman just got smugger.

This surrogacy storyline is getting very wearing. If I have to type "surrogacy" one more time I might explode! Oh no, Gary and Izzy are talking about it. They tell Owen they're off to the fertility clinic to find out more about it. Owen doesn't explode. He offers them a life, which they refuse.

Sunita's in the shop asking Dev if he can have the twins tonight. Dev refuses and tells her he has plans. Tommy's in the shop while this is going on.

When he gets back to the garage he tells Tyrone about it and suggests they go for a drink tonight. Tyrone agrees, saying it's better than sitting at home feeling sorry for himself.

Kevin tells Paul that if he was on Gail's sofa he'd be sleeping with one eye open. Paul says he's got no choice because of the inconsiderate prat next door.

Anna and Owen talk about Izzy and Gary going to the fertility clinic. Anna's had a text message to say they got there an hour early.

Eileen tells Julie that Gail is man-mad and desperate. Julie reveals she saw Gail buying some dark-chocolate biscuits earlier. Oh no. Paul loves dark chocolate.

Eileen bangs on Kevin's door. She tells him he needs help to get the work finished quickly and she's that help.

Gail's making a fuss over Paul, offering softer pillows, drawing the curtains, offering dark chocolate biscuits, a bed upstairs . . . She's a good listener, she says. But all Paul wants is sleep.

Tommy meets Tina in the pub and tells her he's making progress with Tyrone. Tina thinks they make a good team.

Gary and Izzy tell Katie and Chesney what they've found out at the clinic - hormone injections to synchronise the women's cycles, PMT while that goes on, counseling, psychological testing, blood tests, legal advice . . .

Eileen's all overalled and masked and Kevin explains the sander to her. When she turns it on, it drags her across the room.

Izzy and Gary are still giving a Fertility 101 lesson to Katie and Chesney.

Eileen's got the hang of this sanding lark and removes the mask with a satisfied look on her face. For some reason Kevin's got her sanding the floor while there's still lots of stuff in the room, so the floor will have unsanded bits around the edges. If you don't tell him, I won't.

In the pub, Tyrone thanks Tommy for getting him out of the house. They're going to play darts.

Sunita and Karl come in. Stella tells them they're welcome to have a drink but she doesn't want any trouble. Dev comes in and Sunita makes a comment about this being his planned night out. He asks about the twins and she says they're on a sleepover. Karl says they're minding their own business and Dev should do the same.

Eileen's carefully sanding a corner and Kevin brings her a cuppa.

There's also a cuppa for Paul as Gail wakes him. He says he's imposed enough but Gail says she thought he might stop for his tea - she's got food for him and it will only go to waste.

Dev looks at his watch. Tommy tells Tina that Tyrone's not mentioned Kirsty once. A rather attractive young lady arrives and greets Dev, to Sunita's apparent annoyance. She's brought a friend with her - a lovely young blonde lady. Dev panics a bit. He asks Tyrone if he can keep the blonde occupied so he can get to know the first woman a bit better. Tyrone's not exactly happy but he agrees to do it.

Anna goes to the yard to see Owen. She's heard nothing about the appointment apart from a text to say it went well.

Karl's also had a text, from the lads going on the stag weekend that he can't afford.

Tyrone's introduced to the new women as a man who runs his own business. The blonde one is very interested in that. Sunita's very put out and makes disparaging comments about the women. Karl thinks they look all right. In fact, he thinks Dev's punching above his weight. The women have noticed Sunita keeps looking at them. Dev says she's a neighbour. Tyrone is teaching the blonde to play darts when Kirsty walks in. "I thought you were supposed to have a broken heart!" she says.

Uh oh.

We open with Krazy Kirsty storming out of the Rovers with Tyrone hot-footing after her, she is screaming angry at finding him with another woman, and he is pleading his case that the girl belonged to Dev, not him. He is standing up for himself pretty well, and trying his best to put the blame onto her for leaving him, and wanting nothing to do with him, but we all know that he won't win in the end, even if he gets her back, don't we? She finally agrees that he deserves an explanation for her behaviour, and they head into No. 9 to talk.

In the Rovers, Tommy and Tina are discussing the possibility of Tyrone getting back with Kirsty. Tina is dead set against it, but Tommy tells her he loves her, and needs her back. Tina says that it isn't love, it's an addiction, and like any other addiction, she is bad for him. She wants to head off out to see what is going on, but is stopped by Tommy and Stella.

Dev's two women are not best pleased to discover that one of the men they were with was engaged, and the other is married. They have sussed that Dev is using them to show off to his wife, who is sitting across the room. However, when he promises that the whole evening will be on him, they decide to stay.

In No. 6, Anna is reminding Owen that Izzy and Gary are coming for their tea, and is reminding him that they are keeping them in the loop now about their clinic visits, so to keep his cool. Owen knows he is going to have to work on that.

Kirsty is pacing because the baby is kicking. Tyrone asks if he can feel it. Her first reaction is to refuse him, then checks herself and tells him he can. He asks her why she walked out, and she replies that she is a horrible person, not good enough for him, (she's certainly got that right!). She goes on to say that the chemistry between them is not right - toxic even. Tyrone doesn't agree. He asks about the baby, and she tells him she has had her ups and downs, making a lot of visits to the hospital. He asks why she told the police she never wanted to see him again, and she tells him that any fool can see he is a lot better off without her.

He questions whether she thinks he is a fool, and she denies it. He tells her he just wanted to know how she and the baby were. She insists that she really felt he would be happier without her, which is why she stayed away. He asks why she came back then, and she tells him it was because Tommy had convinced her that he wanted to see her, and knew he (Tyrone) had probably put him up to it. Tyrone swears on their baby's life that he knew nothing about it, but that he is very glad she did come back.

Eileen comes home to No. 11, and calls out for Paul, but there's no answer. She thinks she knows where he is, and doesn't like it one little bit. She storms out again, planning to track him down.

Her suspicions are correct, we next see Paul with his feet under the Platt's dinner table being served a generous helping of what looks like Lasagna, although Gail refers to it as her special pie. She tells Paul that although she is not Jewish, she does like their idea of serving chicken soup to cure all that ails you, and this is her version of that. There is a knock at the door, and a smiling Gail sends David off to see who it is. (I think I prefer Gail when she is angry, she is really scary when she's smiling!) Talking of angry though, Eileen marches into the room, and she is very angry, very angry indeed, and asks Paul what he thinks he is doing sitting there eating that slop. A smug Gail just smiles at her, and offers her some of her special pie, which Eileen refuses, saying it resembles school dinners! (Ooh, there is no insult greater than that one! Have you ever eaten school dinners?)

Paul gets up to leave, but Gail hasn't left him much room to get through between her and the table, and she's not moving. She squeals appreciatively as he squeezes by, causing Eileen to scream "YOU - OUT!!" He jumps to attention, and beats it out of there, Gail sweetly tells Eileen that she must give her the recipe some time, Eileen's response to that is to squeeze the brown sauce all over her meal, much to the amusement of everyone sitting at the table, and Gail is highly amused to see that she has managed to upset Eileen that much too.

Stella is trying to collect Sunita & Karl's glasses before they are empty. She suggests to them that they find themselves another local, as it's not right that they are there, when Sunita's ex is trying to get on with his life.

Speaking of Sunita's ex, he is still trying to impress the girls, but shows his age by mentioning Reginald Perrin. They look at him blankly, "Who?" they say. (Oh come on, they re-made the series only a year or two ago with Martin Clunes, surely they saw that!)

Tina is worried, and asks Stella if she can take her break. Although Tommy protests that it is none of their business, she insists on checking on Tyrone to see if he is OK.

Talking about Tyrone, he has made Kirsty a brew, and they are still talking things through. She tells him that she came to see if they could patch things up, which makes Ty's face light up, but it falls again when she goes on to say that they would only be papering over the cracks. She admits that the same old feelings were at the surface when she saw him with that girl, and even though she knew he wasn't doing anything wrong, she just can't handle it. Just then, a knock comes at the door, and Tina calls Tyrone's name. (Why do people always look at the door when it knocks, or look at the telephone when it rings? I don't know why, but they always do in soaps don't they?) Kirsty is upset that Tina is there, reminding him about her blood pressure, so Tyrone scurries off to get rid of her. Instead of getting rid, Tina pushes her way inside, followed by Tommy. Kirsty is angry at Tyrone for allowing them in, Tommy apologises, and Tina gets mad at Tommy for apologising.

Kirsty begs Tyrone not to get back with Kirsty, she pleads that he will be making the biggest mistake of his life. Kirsty is angry with Tina now, and accuses her of being threatening. Tina retorts that she leaves that and the bullying to the ex-copper. Kirsty makes a move to leave, which really pleases Tina, but not Tyrone, who tells the two T's to leave, as they have a lot of talking still to do. Kirsty makes off out the door, with "Good Riddance" ringing in her ears from Tina. but Tyrone is furious now, and screams at them to leave - now! Which they do.

After the break, Dev is suggesting the ladies go home, and he will pay for their cab. They are surprised, saying all the time he is paying, they are willing to stay, but he tells them it is never going to work, and calls for a cab.

Tyrone catches up with Kirsty at the bus stop. She tells him that she told him not to follow her. He explains that some people think he is stupid for loving her, but he doesn't, and he sometimes thinks that she thinks that too, and that is what this is all about. She has no faith in herself, and she is wrong. Kirsty is crying now, and Tyrone puts his arm around her, and begs her to come home, saying they can just ignore people like Tina.

Kirsty tells him that before she left, she was terrified that people would find out about her, know too much about her. Tyrone tells her that she needs to face her fears.

Tommy is confronting Tina about why she interfered in Tyrone's life. She replies that Kirsty is a psychopath, but Tommy contradicts her on that one. Tina just tells him that the bottom line is that it's a good thing that she's gone. Tommy then confesses that he was the one who brought Kirsty back into Tyrone's life. When he tells her what he did, Tina goes ballistic, telling him that he doesn't know the facts.

In No. 6, Izzy and Gary are excitedly telling everyone about their visit to the clinic. They have informational packages for both Katy & Chesney and Anna and Owen. The latter busies himself doing the washing up, and bites his tongue. Izzy beams that in a couple of weeks when Katy turns 18 they can set the ball rolling.

Tommy is demanding to know why Tina is having such a hard time with this, he just can't see what her problem is with Kirsty. Tina tries very hard to keep her promise to Tyrone, but Tommy keeps pushing and pushing until she finally breaks down and tells him. At first, he thinks it's funny that Kirsty hits Tyrone, but Tina points out that what Kirsty does to him is not funny at all, that she batters him, that she leaves bruises, that she abuses him. Tommy now is not laughing.

Eileen comes into the Rovers for a quiet drink, but it is not to be because a still very smug Gail comes over and lords it over her that Paul at least had a hearty meal inside him before he went off for work. (He did? I didn't think he got more than a mouthful before he was dragged away) Anyway, Eileen is determined that Gail is not going to get to her, but is having her patience sorely tested. She finally decides she will have her drink at home, which Gail protests about, saying she was about to buy her one. "I would rather drink with Freddie Krueger" are Eileen's parting words. Chalk another one up to smiling Gail.

Sunita and Karl get up to leave too, and a little sniping takes place between her and Stella. Karl drags her away before it gets any worse. Dev comes back into the bar from seeing the girls into their taxi, and Stella joins him asking how it went. He is mortified, saying the evening was a total disaster, and he had made an utter fool of himself. She contradicts, saying it was Sunita who had made a fool of herself. He tells her he thought he was over Sunita, but he's not. Stella tells him that whether they are over them or not, they are not coming back, so they have to move on. They make a pact to be there for each other should they need to, but it's onwards and upwards.

Tina and Tommy are still discussing Tyrone and Kirsty. He is asking her how long it has been going on, and whether Tyrone fights back. Kirsty explains that she is so manipulative that she has not only battered him physically, but has battered his self confidence as well, and has convinced Tyrone that she is always in the right and he is in the wrong.

Tommy is now feeling really guilty, and angry about getting them back together, and tells Tina that he can't hit her, but she can. Tina points out that she can't do that, because she would only take it out on Tyrone. They come to the conclusion that it's OK now because they have split up anyway, but Tina makes Tommy promise never to let on to Tyrone that she told him.

Izzy and Gary are leaving No. 6, and are congratulating themselves on how well the conversation went. Gary confesses to Izzy that he gets nervous when they talk about it together, as he is afraid that Katy will back out or something. Izzy admits she has some of the same fears, but is sure she won't.

Tina and Tommy are kissing each other goodbye out on the street, but then stop dead in their tracks as they see a loved up couple going into No. 9 with their fish & chips. It's Tyrone and Kirsty - back together again.

Tommy can't understand how Tyrone can just take the abuse from Kirsty. Tina points out that if Ty hit back, he'd be accused of being an animal and if he doesn't, everyone thinks he's a wimp. She reminds him that she's thought Kirsty was a whack job all along and warns Tommy not to say anything to anyone and not to let Tyrone know he knows or Kirsty will take it out on him.

Over in Number9, it seems Tyrone has slept on the sofa while Kirsty slept upstairs. He's making her breakfast. They're tentative with each other and she accepts his offer of breakfast and tea. He goes to pour the freshly boiled kettle but the top falls off and boiling water scalds his hand. Kirsty jumps up and helps him put his hand under cold water.

Sunita is nagging Karl to put his dirty laundry in the hamper rather than leave them on the floor. She further nags him about what he's doing about a job. He complains that it's a bank holiday to further sarcasm from her. He says he'll get a job eventually but is going to enjoy the time off while he's got it. More mithering but then she spoils his plans of an afternoon with a football game on telly by telling him she's cancelled the expensive subscription to the sports satellite channels. Neither of them have jobs and she can't make ends meet very well by what she's getting from Dev. There's no money for extras. She shoves the job section under his nose.

Kevin witters on about Weatherfield County's team while Tommy grafts under a car. Kevin notices he's been miles away and asks where Tyrone is. They all planned to work today, holiday or not. Tommy ruefully says Tyrone doesn't tell him much these days and tells Kevin about Kirsty's appearance last night. Kevin takes a call for a breakdown and tells Tommy to fetch Tyrone if he doesn't show up soon.

Inside, Kirsty is wrapping a bandage around Tyrone's hand. She doesn't do that great a job but he says it's fine and decides he'd better get to work. He says it's ok, his hand will be fine. She wants him to skive off as it's a holiday but Tyrone says the garage can't afford holidays at the moment. She says she'll wait home for him.

The factory workers are also doing overtime. Rob arrives, dressed in a nice suit he's had made. He's heading to a country club in Cheshire to chase up a new contract. It's an important presentation. He's got that in hand and for some reason he's going to print it off rather than take the laptop and wow them with a multimedia slideshow. This little contrivance will make more sense later in the show.

Maria and Marcus are having a bun and tea in the cafe and wondering what to do. They've decided against shopping in the crowded Trafford Centre as well as in the park which will also be crowded. He says Aiden is coming round that evening and Maria suggests a dvd night with her and Jason. Sorted. Over at the counter, Ryan has come in for a coffee, complaining because there's no cappuccino. Roy, in a delightful oratory, points out that if there was an Italian piazza or duomo outside, he might consider serving something appropriate but "when I opened up this morning, it was still a terrace in Northern England". Steve comes in for a coffee as well and asks Ryan what he's doing for the day. He offers him a night out at a gig. He's got tickets and invites Ryan along. Ryan accepts, pays for his coffee and offers Roy a "ciao" to which Roy politely returns "Grazie". Wonderful.

Ryan turns to go and walks right into Rob who's dashed in, naturally spilling the coffee all over his new suit. (the lid of the cup popped off in the collision). Rob hollers, now he's got to change and there's coffee all over his printed presentation. He's horrified and may be late to his meeting now. He tells Michelle to meet him in the Bistro later for a debrief.

Tyrone finally arrives at the garage. Tommy is horrified, seeing the bandage. Tyrone jokes that it's Kirsty's fault, meaning the badly done dressing but of course Tommy doesn't believe Ty's excuse that he did the scalding himself, not now he knows what he knows. He grills Tyrone on how it happened and ascertains that Kirsty is back for good. Tyrone thanks Tommy for his part in it.

After the break, Maria has told Jason about the dvd night. Jason isn't too keen because he thinks he's going to have to sit through a romantic comedy or musical. Maria points out that they might as well get to know Aiden because he'll be around more if Marcus and Aid get on well.

Steve practices sucking in his gut. Lloyd, naturally, takes the mick. Steve is having a bit of an insecure day because of Rob looking so sharp in his new suit and he thinks maybe Rob has his eye on Michelle and could very well woo her and break down her defenses. He reckons Michelle is out of his league and Lloyd doesn't disagree but argues that Michelle loves him anyway. Steve moans that he doesn't want to lose Michelle. Ryan comes in and Steve makes a snap decision. He tells Ryan he's got to swerve the gig as something has come up. He gives Ryan the tickets so he can find someone else to go with but Ryan doesn't seem impressed.

Tina comes to the garage and is appalled to hear about Tyrone scalding himself. Clearly she's inclined to think Kirsty did it but Tyrone insists he was the one to blame and adds that he wouldn't lie to her. He doesn't have to anymore. She's not happy to hear that Ty and Kirsty have worked things out. Ty's not happy that she's not happy for them. She says his bandage is dirty now and it needs changing. She says she will do it for him. He agrees to lock up and go to the flat since Tommy is out on a break and Kevin is still on the breakdown call.

Karl comes home with cans and a bottle of wine. He's got a deal on with his mate Tez, a job lot of Chinese smoke detectors. 250 of them, and it will only cost 500 quid. They can sell them for a minimum of a fiver and make their money back twice over. She says they don't have 500 pounds to spare.

In the flat, Tina is wrapping a bandage neatly around his hand and asking him about Kirsty. He insists things are better already and are going to be all right. She makes him state again that she didn't cause the burn and gently points out that she cares about him and worries about him. She doesn't like to think he's living in fear or being hurt and couldn't live with herself if she didn't try to do anything about it. He reassures her. They've worked it out. His phone rings and it's Tommy. Tyrone tells him that Tina is fixing his bandage and they'll be right down. He assures her it's all good.

Sunita apologizes for raining on Karl's parade but was trying to be realistic. He says big businessmen make gambles and they had to start somewhere. He says he can't get the smoke alarms on credit and they won't get this chance again. He suggests she could take the money out of her and Dev's joint account as a loan. Dev never need know once they put the money back post-sale.

Kirsty comes out of the corner shop and spies Tina and Tyrone walking back to the garage. I guess she hasn't changed after all. She stalks over and starts screaming at him for being with Tina. Tina defends herself. Tommy comes up as well while Kirsty accuses Tina of being after Tyrone. Tommy faces up to Kirsty and shouts that she has no cause to accuse anyone after what she's done. Tina tries to pull him away but he's going for gold. He tells Kirsty he knows she's abused his mate and it makes him sick to think about it. Kirsty's face freezes in shock at the betrayal.

Written by Chris Fewtrell and Directed by Judith Dine Kirsty is very upset with Ty and wants to know what he's been saying about her. Unfortunately she chooses to have a go at him in the street in front of Tina and Tommy. Tommy believes Kirsty was the one who burned Ty's hand. Ty denies it and accuses Tina of telling things to Tommy and Kirsty is then fit to burst with anger when she realises it means he must have been talking to Tina. Tommy tries telling Ty what he thinks of Kirsty and Ty tries to wallop him one. "Don't touch me," Kirsty screams at Ty hysterically before running off up the street. Not very fast, obviously, since she's almost nine months pregnant.

Over at Sunita's, Karl is trying to talk her round to lending him the money for his smoke alarm deal. He tells her it's virtually risk free but Sunita's worried in case he doesn't sell them and she can't put the money back in the bank before Dev finds out. She tells Karl she doesn't want to hurt him more than she already has so Karl gets all narky at that one. He accuses Sunita of nagging him on the one hand and then not supporting him when he tries to pay his way.

Audrey is talking to Lewis in the Bistro. He's telling her about a romantic getaway he's booked for the two of them. Just then his phone rings and, would you believe it, it's Nick calling to say he's stuck in a traffic jam and he doesn't know when he'll get back. It looks like their plans might have to be put on hold.

Meanwhile, Rob comes in and joins Michelle who's waiting for him at one of the tables. She asked how his pitch to the client went but it seems Ryan's accident with the coffee put the mockers on it. He tells Michelle he couldn't have looked more of a mess if he'd tried and the whole thing was a disaster. At that moment, who should come wandering in looking all nonchalant but Steve. Michelle's surprised to see him there so he tells her that one of Ryan's friends wanted to go with him to the gig so Steve gave him his ticket. Rob smiles to himself as Steve asks whether he could join them in the Bistro instead.

We cut to Ryan in the flat. He's on the phone to Sophie and arranging to sell her two spare tickets to a gig which just happen to be surplus to requirements ...

Back at the garage, Tommy and Tina try talking to Ty but he's really angry with Tina for divulging his secret to Tommy. Tommy defends Tina saying he's worked out something was up and he'd had to drag it out of Tina. Tina gently tells him that it's because they care about him but Ty is really, really angry. He tells them that Kirsty is the love of his life and reminds them she's about to have his baby and if she leaves him again it will be all their fault. Tommy says people don't change - meaning Kirsty - and that it was bound to come out in the open sooner or later and he suggests Ty will thank them for it one of these days. But thanking them is the last thing on Ty's mind right now. He tells them that if things don't work between him and Kirsty then he's finished, before walking out of the garage.

Jason and Maria are preparing for their evening of wine and DVDs. Jason's not looking forward to being the only hetero male in the flat but when Aiden and Marcus turn up it turns out he needn't have worried. Whilst Marcus would happily watch Mamma Mia on a continuous loop it seems Aiden's film choice is far more in keeping with Jason's and it looks as though the two of them will be bonding over the remote control, leaving Marcus and Maria to enjoy the white wine.

In the Bistro, Audrey and Lewis are still waiting for Nick to turn up so they can leave for their night away. Audrey laments that at her time of life she should be taking it easy but each time she starts to smell the roses, a member of her family whips out a pair of secateurs. Lewis tells her he could do with a proper break but he's not sure he could take the time off because, unlike Audrey, he isn't the boss. Audrey points out that she is the boss's grandmother and tells him to leave it with her.

Lewis goes over to take the order from Rob's table. Rob is still grumbling to Michelle about the fact that he lost the order with the client because of her son's stupidity. While Steve rather ostentatiously orders some very healthy sounding dishes off the menu, the other two start a full-scale row about Ryan. Rob tells Michelle that he's a complete waste of space and if he's got any sense left in his drug-addled head then he'll stay right out of his way. He then gets up and walks out, leaving Steve and Michelle on their own. As soon as he's gone, Steve tells Lewis to change his order to chicken wings, a rib eye steak with all the trimmings and a pint to wash it down with.

In the Rovers, Tina is behind the bar and having an argument with Tommy. She tells him she gave him specific instructions not to mention what she'd told him about Kirsty and Ty in confidence. Tommy still thinks he was right to say something and asks her if she thinks that in the long run Ty will be better or worse off because of it. Tina shrugs and says she doesn't know, it depends what Kirsty does as a result. Tina says that as long as Kirsty's carrying Ty's baby, there's no way he's going to want her to go anywhere. Tommy gives Tina a kiss and says he'll see her after work.

Ty arrives home to find Kirsty doing the ironing. She's in one of her angry moods and wants to know where he's been. He tells her he went for a walk and that he was scared of coming home to an empty house. Kirsty stands behind the ironing board with the steam coming out of the bottom of the iron in a way which looks positively threatening. But she doesn't actually attack him with it and instead lets off steam with her words. She's most angry about the fact that it was Tina whom Ty chose to confide in. She wants to know why he's raked up the past when they're trying to put it all behind them. She tells him he needs to tell her everything and that she needs to understand it otherwise she'll be out of there and next time she won't be coming back.

Kirsty has finished the ironing but she hasn't finished having a go at Ty. As she angrily puts everything away she accuses Ty of being far too close to Tina. While he denies there's anything more than a close friendship between them, Kirsty tells him that Tina fancies him like mad. Ty tells her he'd never be unfaithful to her but Kirsty retorts that some betrayals go much deeper than sex. Ty apologises again for talking to Tina but the fact that he'd made Tina promise not to tell anyone else about it only makes it worse in Kirsty's eyes because it meant that the two of them had shared a secret together. Ty tries to explain how Tina found out when she walked in on him when he was treating his bruises and then he confesses that he needed to talk to someone because he couldn't hold it in any longer. He says he couldn't understand how things could be so good and yet so bad. By now Ty is starting to cry and Kirsty has fallen silent. Ty tells her he loves her and that he tried to fix things but she wouldn't let him. As he continues, Kirsty starts to nod and then finally she tells him she's sorry. Ty says that this morning it felt like heaven and everything he could wish for but that other days … "it's hell," Kirsty finishes for him. Ty says he just wants something in between, just normal. "Please don't leave me," he begs and Kirsty takes him into her arms.

Outside in the street, Dev arrives home after a day out with the children. They're an hour late and Sunita is angry with him because she'll have to pick up the pieces now that they're overtired. The children stand in between them listening as Sunita accuses Dev of spoiling them with trips to the cinema and designer clothes and he points out that it's his money which he's earned building up his businesses and that he started them long before he had the misfortune of meeting her. It seems like he's made his point although at what cost to the children who had to witness the entire exchange?

At Jason's flat, Marcus is in the middle of the sofa, sandwiched between Aidan and Jason who are snoring happily away. They've managed to fall asleep during their macho movie so Marcus and Maria decide that they'll never notice if they pop Mamma Mia into the DVD player instead.

Meanwhile, on Sunita's sofa, Karl is reading the paper. Sunita has finally managed to get the children to bed and she settles down next to him. She appears to start picking fleas out of his hair although as no mention is made of this fact we have to assume it's her way of showing a bit of gentle affection. Karl tells Sunita he still can't find a job so Sunita raises the subject of the smoke alarms. It looks as though she might be having second thoughts about lending him the money to buy them but, as she explains to Karl she's got to be sure that he could pay the money back. He says he wants to be able to provide for her and the kids and this is a way of him being able to do it. So Sunita agrees to take the money out tomorrow and Karl tells her she won't regret it.

Ty and Kirsty are enjoying a cosy takeaway chicken madras. Kirsty tells Ty she wishes she could undo what she's done to him. He tells her they've got to forget about it but she points out they've said that before and it keeps happening. Ty raises the subject of a counselor but whilst Kirsty tells Ty she'd be willing to do anything for his sake she thinks it's now too late because the truth is out there. She says she should never have come back but Ty is adamant she's wrong. He says that he'll publicly deny anything which people say and tell them to keep their trap shut. "Like you did with Tina?" asks Kirsty. Ty promises that he'll lay it on the line with them and points out that Tommy and Tina have to go along with what they say because they owe them money for one thing. But Kirsty wants more: she tells Ty he has to choose between Tina and Tommy or her and the baby. As far as Ty's concerned, there is no choice and he takes hold of Kirsty's hand to show her his decision.

We now move to sofa number three of this evening's episode where Steve and Michelle are cuddling up after their meal out. Michelle is admiring his shirt which he confesses he put on specially to go and see her in the Bistro. In a lightbulb moment Michelle realises that the whole evening was about Steve being jealous of Rob. She thinks it's really funny and then tells Steve he needn't worry because it's him that she loves. He tells her she's no idea how relieved he is to hear her say that and then with one swift move, undoes the over-tight waistband of his smart trousers.

Tommy and Tina are coming out of the Rovers. Just as Tommy is wondering if they should go and see if Ty is all right they see him coming out of the front door. They ask if he's alright but he walks past telling them that there's no going back after what happened today. Tommy tries saying that they did it for his own good but Ty turns around and says he's not interested. He tells Tommy he's no longer his mate and that he's fired. He adds that the only time he wants to see him from now on is every Monday morning with the next installment of the loan repayments. Tina tries to protest but Ty tells them that he's doing what he has to do to protect his family and that's all that matters now. As he walks away he leaves Tina and Tommy standing on the pavement looking utterly bewildered.

Thursday 30 August

Tommy goes to the garage to try and make peace with Tyrone, but Tyrone isn't having any of it. "You and me, we're finished!" he says.

In Sunita's house, Karl is looking at the consignment of smoke alarms. He tells Sunita they'll have the money back in Dev's account before he realises.

Michelle is worrying about Ryan, when she discovers his bed hasn't been slept in. Steve tells her he probably had too much to drink at the gig and stayed over. He'll turn up at Streetcars later, he's sure.

At Eileen's, Sean is in high spirits and goes off to work. Paul playfully pushes Eileen down on the sofa when she yelps. A spring has gone in the sofa. This is a blow, now she'll have to save up for a new one.

Stella is in the back room of the pub when Eva brings Rob in. He's come to say he thinks he and Eva should give it another go, they should get to know each other properly. Just then the phone rings and Eva goes off to answer it. While she's out of the room, Rob tells Stella that if he and Eva are back together it gives him more chance to see her, Stella. Stella does not look pleased at this, but then Eva bounces back in and Rob asks her out to lunch. He asks Stella if she'd like to join them, but she says she's working.

Karl is in the cafe trying to sell Roy what he calls the Rolls Royce of smoke alarms. In the end Roy gives in and buys one.

Michelle and Steve are at the taxi office when Ryan arrives back. Michelle is cross with him for not ringing her. As she's about to leave, Sophie comes in and thanks him for giving her the gig tickets and starts to say how amazing it was. Michelle stops in her tracks. "Is this the gig last night?" she asks. Ryan looks extremely uncomfortable as the penny drops with his mother.

Tommy sees Kevin in the cafe and asks for his job back. Kevin didn't even know Tyrone had sacked him, but says there's nothing he can do.

In the taxi office, Michelle and Steve are shouting at Ryan. They realise that he sold the tickets and has spent the money on drugs. Michelle tells him he's too stupid to see what he's doing to himself, and without her behind him he'd probably be in the gutter. Ryan turns to leave. Steve jumps up and reminds him that he works there, he can't just come and go as he pleases. Ryan says he'll be in tomorrow, so Steve sacks him.

Karl has now reached the garage, and is selling his 'top of the range' smoke alarms to Kevin. Kev points out he can get two for £9.99 down the road. Karl want a tenner each for his. Karl plays his trump card, reminding Kevin that he has a little one upstairs and this shouldn't scrimp on safety. In the end, Kevin buys 2.

When Karl has gone, Kevin talks to Tyrone about Tommy. He asks why Tommy was sacked, but Tyrone just says that he didn't want him there so he sacked him. Kevin asks Tyrone what he thinks Jack would say about it all, and tells Tyrone he ought to go and see Tommy and sort it out with him. Tyrone says it's too late.

Ryan has gone round to see Sophie. She realises that he bought drugs with the money from the tickets and is furious with him. She's seen what drugs do to people at the refuge. "Well, that's not going to be me," says Ryan.

Tommy is in the pub when Kevin, Tryone and Kirsty walk in. As Ty and Kirsty talk affectionately together, Tommy can't stand it any longer. "Are you having a laugh, you?" he blurts out. All eyes turn on him, and he announces to the pub that Kirsty has been knocking Tyrone about for months. Kirsty says he and Tina are just trying to split up her and Tyrone, they can't bear for Tyrone to be happy with someone else. "I'll never forgive you for this," she says, and walks out. Tyrone then tells everyone that it's not true, and Tommy is just trying to get him back because he was sacked. Ty then tells everyone that Rita was late for her wedding because Tommy was using the garage to pack cars full of drugs. He then storms out after Kirsty. Shocked eyes turn on Tommy, who looks very uncomfortable. Kevin demands to know if it's true, and Eileen is very disapproving - fancy making up stuff about her hitting him! Tina tries to say that the woman is a monster, but no one is taking her seriously. Kevin is furious and says that if Tommy sets foot in his garage again he'll call the police. Tommy walks out, and Stella tells Tina she should finish her shift now.

Ryan is in the flat, staring at his guitar, propped up in its open case. Then, taking a deep breath, he gets up, picks it up and marches out.

Back at Tyrone's, a distraught Kirsty is convinced that now everyone will hate her. Tyrone hugs her and tells her that everyone thinks Tommy and Tina are lying. Anyway, things are going to get better now that she's seeing the counselor. She tells him she loves him, no one has ever loved her like he does, and she doesn't know what she'd do if she lost him. He assures her she won't, and she gets him to promise that Tommy and Tina will never come between them again. He tells her that she and the baby are all he needs.

Eileen and Sean walk back into their house and are shocked to find a new sofa installed, along with a new sideboard on top of which is a hideous vase. "Who on earth would buy that?" says Sean, just as Paul comes into the room. Apparently these were things he had in storage, he says he figured they might as well use them rather than buy new. He brought the vase because it always sat on that sideboard. "Nice..." breathes Sean through a fake smile. Eileen sits down as Paul goes out to the kitchen to put the kettle on. Sean asks Eileen if it means that she and Paul will be having a kiss and cuddle on dead Lesley's sofa. Eileen jumps off it, smartish!

A very chuffed Karl goes back to Sunita and shows her a handful of cash. He's sold lots of the smoke alarms, one more day like that and Dev's money will be back in the bank. She's delighted and he leads her off upstairs.

Stella's out cleaning the pub windows when Rob comes past. She tells him that for some reason her daughter seems to think he's something special, and warns him not to disappoint her.

Rob carries on down the Street and runs into Ryan. It doesn't take more than a few moments for him to realise that Ryan is off his head on drugs. He tells him to keep out of his way, he's a waste of space.

Steve and Michelle are in the flat when Ryan comes in. she realises that he's high as a kite in a just a few moments also, and is quick to go through his pockets. She pulls out a pack of white powder and flushes it down the sink. She's also pulled out a paper which shows her that he's sold his guitar. She's furious and upset and Ryan rushes out again.

Tommy and Tina see Tyrone across the road and rush over. Tommy asks how Tyrone could do that to them. Tyrone tells them they did it to themselves, they had no right to say what they did. He's done nothing but put himself out for them, and that's why he and Kirsty row so much. He's protected them, lent Tommy money, and now they want to spoil it for him because they don't like his choice of girlfriend. Tina protests that they told the truth because they care. Ty reckons this is his chance of being happy, he's not going to let them ruin it for him. They're done, finished. He walks into his house, and Tommy and Tina walk on. It's not long before they're rowing about it. She says she told him not to say anything about Tyrone's situation, and not only that they're up to their eyes in debt and haven't got a penny, and now he's got sacked. She tells him he'd better get it sorted, and quick!
