Monday 2 April

Written By Ellen Taylor Directed by Laurence Moody

Eileen watches Paul bring a box of things downstairs. He says they'll be able to move in though the work isn't quite complete. They argue about it, he clearly not wanting to go but she doesn't see there's any choice. It's just not working. He thinks all her friends have influenced her, or Jason, but she says it's best for Lesley. He won't accept that Lesley needs 24 hour care, he took vows and intends on keeping them and won't put her in a home.

Sunita tells Aadi to get his swimming trunks but Dev tells the lad to finish breakfast first, contradicting her but giving her the silent treatment. They bicker and he brings up the drunk tank. She's sharp with him for bringing it up in front of the children who immediately ask what a drunk tank is. She orders Aadi to get his things and he's very rude to her and kicks his sister before stomping upstairs. Dev mutters about them setting a bad example for them.

Back to Eileen's. Eileen tries to explain that the homes have trained people to care for Lesley. He hisses that she just wants rid. She agrees, she's had enough and is miserable, isn't he? He begs her not to make them leave because he loves her. She says she loves him too but the whole thing is a mess. Lesley comes down to ask Paul to help with the bathroom. Eileen doesn't want them there when she comes back.

Marcus carries Liam as Maria is off to the salon. Sean has Dylan there for a visit and Marcus picks him up after putting Liam down. He offers to care for Dylan all day, excited to spend time with him. Maria has to go to work because Audrey has sacked David and now gone away for a holiday so she's there on her own. Sean spies Eileen coming out and calls over to let her know Dylan is there but she just gives a half hearted wave and goes across to the factory. Marcus advises Sean to go be with Eileen and he'll look after Dylan.

Tyrone kisses Kirsty goodbye. She shows him a dvd she's got on water birth. He blanches and says he'd made plans to have a pint with Tommy. Again? She spits. He said it will only be a couple and then he'll come and watch the dvd with her. She's not pleased. She offers to come along. He's hesitant but she believes she needs to build a few bridges for his sake. He's quite pleased if Kirsty can make up with Tina.

Karl has brought some post in, mostly overdue bill reminders. He hides them and hands Stella the rest of it, junk mail. They have a joke about it and he takes a call. He goes out into the hallway and it's clear that it's from the bank, he's overdrawn and they're harassing him for money. He promises money by the end of the week and then quickly closes off as Stella has come through. He lies that the call was from one of the other drivers who wants him to go for a pint later. But she looks suspicious.

Tyrone tells Tommy that Kirsty is coming out with them. He's expecting fireworks because Tina is working too. Behind them, Kevin is telling Dev he can't fix his car until tomorrow. Dev moans about having to pick up the kids (Oh come on, Bessie St. school is only a few blocks away. Walk it!) Kevin mentions he's going to see Sally and says she's doing better and should be home soon. Dev is pleased to hear it. Sophie goes by and Kevin hollers over. Turns out she didn't get his text, she's lost her phone. He tells her Sally might be coming home today. Sophie is going to clean up just in case but thanks Kevin for his offer of help. Kevin turns to Dev and vows to get his family back together. That seems to strike deep with Dev who's family seems to be falling apart these days.

In the factory, Beth is trying to talk about Lesley and her escapade with Amy. Sean tries to change the topic of conversation but it's no use. The gossips are too interested in gossiping. Beth reckons Lesley should be locked up but Izzy points out it's not Victorian times but Fiz wonders if she is dangerous, she did go off with a child. Eileen is visibly upset and has to leave. Sean hisses at the rest of them for their insensitivity. Fiz takes a call from her child minder who's become ill so she's got to go get Hope.

Matt sees Eileen in the street. He asks after Lesley and wonders if she and Paul have thought any more about residential care. She quietly tells him that they've split up and he will be taking Lesley home. She thanks him for his help. She then passes Jason and tells him she's finished with Paul and expects him to say he told her so. He just says he's sorry and hugs her.

In Number 11, Lesley is taking her things out of the box that Paul has put them in. Some of the things she recognizes and some she doesn't including the wedding album. He shows it to her and starts looking at photos and telling her stories about their wedding. She begins to remember things, a poem, people. She looks tearful and apologizes to him. He holds her close and then puts the album in the box. She flips back out again and asks where they're going. When he says they're going home she asks if Eileen is coming. No, he says curtly.

In the salon, Maria has Liam in one arm and scissors in the other, trying to cut hair and apologize to the group of waiting women behind her. Fiz is sitting in the corner with Hope on her lap. (both use the same child minder). Marcus comes in with Dylan and surveys the situation. He rescues them and takes both kids off their hands happily. Fiz and Maria are grateful! Why can't they make straight men like that, Fiz exclaims! Indeed.

Sunita tells Stella things aren't good with Dev. Karl says he's got to go. Stella tells Sunita she is suspicious, Karl has his shifty face on. Dev has arrived. Clearly something on his mind. He says he wants to talk. They're all miserable and he wants to talk together like adults. He offers to cook and that raises a smile.

Ken offers to work the switch for Steve to help out. Steve says it's fine, there's no need. He clearly doesn't want Ken underfoot even for a free shift. Sophie comes in wondering if her mobile has been turned in as she left it in a cab. She tells Steve Karl picked her up outside the hospital. Steve is flabbergasted and asks if Karl had a proper Streetcars ID. Of course, Sophie says, that's why she tapped on his window for a lift. Steve tells her he'll see if Karl has the phone.

Eileen hasn't returned to the factory and they all wonder where she is. Beth makes a disparaging remark just as Eileen returns. She tells them that she and Paul have split up and she's asked them to leave. She doesn't want them to be nice to her or she'll cry. Beth invites her for a pint after work. The rest of them invite themselves. Fiz returns and when told, hugs Eileen sending her into floods of tears.

Sunita greets Tina who's come in for her shift. She's in a better mood it seems. Tyrone and Kirsty come in. Tina's cool but surprised when Kirsty offers her a drink as well. She's skeptical as well. Tommy comes in. Things seem awkward between everyone with Tyrone in the middle trying to be peacemaker.

Paul finds Lesley tearing up wedding photos from the album, distraught and angry because she thinks Paul has married someone else. She doesn't recognize herself in the photos. Paul is horrified! She screams and he hollers at her. She demands to know who the woman is and he pushes her back, raising his fist screaming that it's her!!! He doesn't hit her and stops short, further horrified at his reaction.

In the pub, Kirsty pushes Tyrone and Tommy over to the dartboard. She starts with Tina, first, saying she wants to bury the hatchet. "Where, in my head?" Tina retorts. Kirsty attempts to apologize but Tina's not having it yet. Kirsty admits Tina and Tyrone never gave the impression they fancied each other, it was all her. Then she spins a sob story about an ex boyfriend who had an affair with her best friend and once caught, destroyed Kirsty's self esteem badly. Tina buys it but she says though they aren't friends, they can at least be civil. Kirsty tells her that Tommy told Ty that he really likes Tina. Tina pretends she doesn't care.

Sophie comes to the garage to tell Kevin that Dev has asked her to work back at the shop and she asks Kevin to finish cleaning the house. He agrees.

Kirsty comes to play darts with Tommy and proves she's a dab hand at it. She plays match maker and tells him that Tina's into him in spite of what she'd accused Tommy of being. He doesn't believe her but the seed is planted. Karl arrives in a bad mood. Steve comes in behind him and tells him he knows Karl has been moonlighting on the firm's name. Karl takes Steve in the back to explain.

Outside, Beth and Eileen come across the street and encounter Tracy who wonders who's looking after the madwoman. Tactful as always. She tells Eileen that Paul couldn't have moved out because she could hear the shouting earlier and then a door slamming. Eileen runs back to her house. She and Beth come in and find the tatters of wedding photos and Lesley cowering in a corner behind a chair, Paul nowhere to be seen.

Eileen and Beth have been left with Lesley. Beth looks none too keen when Eileen instructs her to look after Lesley while she attempts to track down Paul.

Round at the Rovers, Steve is giving Karl his marching orders for moonlighting in his Streetcars cab. Karl tries to explain about his debt problems but Steve is having none of it. Just as Karl is begging Steve not to drop him in it with Stella, she walks through the door. Against his better judgement, Steve pretends the "secret" they were discussing was a lads' night out but the moment Stella's out of the door he makes it very clear to Karl where he stands on the issue of his job.

Sunita returns home to find the table laid with candles. Dev has farmed out the kids and is preparing a romantic dinner for two. Sunita is delighted when she sees a travel brochure sitting on the table and hears Dev is planning a holiday for the family in Mallorca. However, her pleasure is short-lived when she sees that the resort boasts two championship golf courses and it's a 15 minute drive from the beach. Her mood becomes even darker when she discovers that it's a fait accompli as Dev has already booked the holiday.

At the corner shop Sophie is arranging the flowers outside when Kevin comes past full of excitement to say that Sally is allowed home from the hospital and he's off to collect her. Sophie can't go with him as she's minding the shop but she says she'll text Sunita.

Ty and Kirsty come out of the Rovers and he's keeping her amused with tales of Jack's pigeons and impressions of the way he used to talk. Kirsty comments that it's weird that Tommy is the one who was related to Vera and Jack and yet Tyrone is the one who loved them.

Sunita is still furious that Dev has booked the holiday without consulting her and tells him he's not going to get round her with his shahi paneer. She shouts at him that it's going to cost a fortune, is in the middle of nowhere and if he doesn't change the booking to somewhere else she's not going.

Maria and FIz turn up to collect the children from Marcus. They've been having fun painting as we can see from the evidence daubed all over Marcus's clothes. Just as Sean joins them on the doorstep, Fiz's phone rings. When he hears it's Eileen Sean says that if she's looking for Paul he's just seen him in Roy's Rolls.

In the cafe Paul is looking desperate but Sylvie's only concern is that he's in the way and she wants to sweep the floor. Eileen comes in and, at the sight of her, Paul completely breaks down. Roy and Sylvie are left looking on awkwardly.

Karl is in the corner shop trying, unsuccessfully, to get money out of the cash machine when Sunita comes in and asks Sophie if she thinks Sunita is an unreasonable person. When Sunita lets Sophie leave early to go and see her mum Sophie tells her she's the most reasonable person she knows. Karl is still unable to get any cash out so Sunita allows him to owe them the money for his shopping, just to annoy Dev and, to really stick the boot in, she tells Karl she's not going to do Dev's job for him and is going to lock up early.

Back in the cafe Paul is pouring his heart out to Eileen. He's devastated that he nearly hit Lesley. She reminds him that he didn't actually do it but his guilt runs very deep and he says he can't bear the pointlessness of the situation and the fact that he's lost the Lesley who he knew and loved. Eileen tells Paul that Lesley is so lucky to have him but gently points out that Paul can't carry on like this anymore.

Sally arrives back from the hospital. She's still looking quite fragile and, at the sight of Fiz across the street, asks to be taken inside as she doesn't want everyone staring at her.

Eileen and Paul come walking along the street, hand in hand. Dr. Carter sees them and asks how Lesley is. Paul is about to say she's fine then thinks better of it. He can't quite bring himself to say that he thinks it's time Lesley went into a home but Dr. Carter offers to arrange for them all to go and take a look without committing themselves.

Sally is settling in at home when Fiz comes round for a visit. Sally's pleasantly surprised when, instead of telling her what a fool she's been as she expected, Fiz hands her a box of chocolates and says she's just come round to check that she's O.K.

Sunita comes home to an apologetic Dev. He says he's sorry for not consulting her but unfortunately he's called the holiday company and they can't change the booking without losing their deposit. But Sunita knows Dev too well and, on checking the phones, discovers he hasn't called them at all. She tells him to go on his precious holiday but that he has to take both of the children with him and she's stopping at home. Sunita then announces she's off to the Rovers and, as a parting shot, adds that she let Sophie go home and has shut the shop.

Sally and Fiz are still chatting. Sally is sure that everyone must be saying that Anne should have left her for dead but Fiz reassures her that all anyone is talking about at work is what's going to happen to the factory. Fiz then goes on to tell Sally that she knows just how it feels to have everyone looking at you and judging you. "Me, you mean?" asks Sally. But Fiz says no, she didn't mean that, and that she doesn't blame Sally for the way she felt about Fiz. Fiz tells Sally that if anyone says anything bad about her she'll be the first one to defend Sally and we're left with the impression that the two of them really have buried the hatchet.

Paul, Eileen and Lesley arrive at the residential home for their visit. It gives every appearance of being at the top of the league tables as far as care homes are concerned and Lesley is taken off for a session with the music therapist while Paul and Eileen go on a tour.

Tyrone and Kirsty are enjoying a night in over a takeaway pizza. All seems blissfully happy between the two of them which almost certainly means it's not going to stay that way for long.

Paul and Eileen have reached the end of their tour of the home. The lady showing them round explains that it's easier for them to look after people because they're not fighting history and that if Paul decides to send Lesley there, it doesn't mean that he's failed. Lesley appears to be enjoying the music session and Paul reminisces to Eileen that she was once a great dancer. He still looks torn at the idea of sending her there, especially when Lesley spots him and asks why they are there and if they can go home now.

Sean and Marcus are on their way home with a takeaway. Marcus is exhausted after his day with the kids but he seems to have enjoyed himself. It prompts Sean to raise the subject of adoption again and to ask Marcus whether he feels let down by Sean. But Marcus reassures him he feels fine about it and says he was just destined to be a small part of lots of kids' lives rather than a big part of one or two and that this way it gives them more freedom to enjoy themselves.

Eileen is back at home, sticking photographs back together which Lesley has cut up. She picks up a piece showing a picture of Lesley in her wedding dress and pops it into her handbag before Paul comes into the room. He tells her Lesley can't remember the visit to the home and then points out he hasn't done a very good job of leaving Eileen. "One more night won't kill me," replies Eileen. Paul tells Eileen that he's still not sure he's ready to give up on looking after Lesley and then changes to subject to talk about the night they got married. He returns to the topic of the home and asks Eileen if she'll take him back if Lesley goes there but Eileen replies by saying that the decision can't be about her. Paul then admits that he knows the time has come and that he'll phone the home in the morning to say that Lesley will be going in.

Stella's locking up the pub. It's been a long night and she looks grateful when Karl offers to finish up in the bar and put the takings in the safe. She tells him it's worth lots of Brownie points so he takes his opportunity to remind her that he's going on a lads' night out. After Stella has gone upstairs Karl goes to the safe. He sees a pile of £20 notes in there which he shoves into his back pocket. He's about to put the bag of takings into the safe when he hesitates, removes it along with the rest of the cash, closes the safe door, picks up his jacket and walks out, taking all the money with him.

Thursday 5 April

Karl and Stella come downstairs to find the front door wide open. She asks whether he locked the door last night, wondering how much he and Steve had to drink. They check the bar, both tills seem intact and there's no drink missing. They go into the back room where the safe is wide open and empty.

Paul is trying to explain to Lesley that she's going to be living somewhere else for a while. "Like a holiday?" she asks, and then gets worried because she hasn't brought her swimming costume. Just then Eileen comes in, and Paul tells her that the care home has called, they can take Lesley this afternoon, for a trial period to see how she settles. He's worried about how she'll be when he has to leave her. Eileen tells him that whatever happens he won't be on his own.

Dev is preparing to go off on his holiday. Sunita comes downstairs. "You're still going then?" He says he told her what he was going to do. "Yes, you told me, you never asked me," she points out. He says he's asking her now. "Come with us, please. If not for me, do it for Asha and Aadi." Sunita says she can't. "You mean you won't," he says. "Same thing," she replies. "No, it's not," says Dev. She tells him to have it his way. "You usually do." And she walks off.

Stella is staring at the empty safe when Leanne comes in. She says she didn't hear anything. Stella says that Eva stayed at Nick's. Karl comes in and says nothing has been touched upstairs. They then argue over whether or not he locked the door and set the alarm. She goes to call the police, but he stops her, saying he'll do it. She goes back into the living room and the puts the phone back down on its cradle.

Dev and the children are getting into the taxi. He tells Sunita it's not too late to change her mind. She says he could change his. They eventually agree that it's probably better to have some time apart right now.

At the care home, Lesley is being shown her room by one of the staff, who then offers to show her the garden. Lesley goes off without a backward glance at Paul and Eileen.

Carla takes the morning post to Peter in the bookies. There's a letter from Leanne's solicitor regarding her application for custody of Simon. Peter is being asked to attend a mediation meeting. Carla asks if he's going to go, and Peter snaps that of course he's going to go, she and Simon are the most important things in his life at the moment. He then apologises to her for snapping and she tells him maybe he should start fighting for Simon rather than taking it out on her and everybody else.

The staff at the Rovers are discussing the break in, and start wondering why the police haven't shown up yet. Karl then confesses that he didn't call them, and starts to waffle on about not setting the alarm and not locking the door properly and wondering how that would affect the insurance. Stella is furious and grabs the phone to do it herself.

Tommy arrives at the garage as Ty finishes a phone call. Tyrone tells Tommy to ring Doreen. Tommy wants to know why, and Ty eventually tells him that his Granddad Geoff has had a heart attack, he was rushed to hospital but didn't make it, he died. Tommy is stunned and sits down, saying he can't believe it, he only spoke to him the other day. Tyrone suggests he goes home, but Tommy doesn't want to be on his own, so Ty then suggests he closes up while Tommy rings Doreen, and then they'll go to the pub and raise a glass to Geoff.

At the care home, Paul hands over Lesley's cases to the staff and gives her a hug and kiss goodbye. As he and Eileen walk off they hear her ask, "They were nice, who were they?"

Stella has finished her call to the police. Karl wants to know what she told them. She says she told them that the door was unlocked and the safe empty, and the police were interested in why nothing was forced. Karl tries to suggest that maybe someone hid in the toilets when they closed up. Tina says they always check the toilets. Stella says it doesn't explain how they opened the safe, unless they knew the combination, and everyone who works there knows the combination. She suggests that maybe Sunita and Tina were maybe talking one evening and someone overhead. "So you're saying it's our fault?" queries Sunita. Stella says that two and a half grand has gone missing and something isn't right. Sunita puts her coat on, telling Stella they were accused before of taking money from the till. She comes there to work, not to be called a thief, so she's going home. Karl turns on Stella and asks what she did that for, and the next minute they're shouting at each other, and then he storms out.

Peter accosts Leanne in the street and says he got the solicitor's letter. He thinks this is her way of getting even. She tells him it's about what's best for Simon. He tells her to forget it, Simon's staying with him. "I'll see you in court," says Leanne.

Karl knocks on Sunita's door to see if she's ok, and she asks him in.

Stella takes Tina a cuppa and mutters that she's sorry. Tina says she can understand why she's upset, but she and Sunita would never steal off her.

Back at Sunita's house, she's telling Karl about her problems with Dev, and how Amber was almost an excuse for them to lash out at each other. Karl says that most couples row, he and Stella do. Sunita says that Stella still loves him, but she's not sure if she still loves Dev. Hesitatingly, Karl starts to say that it's not just about him and Stella any more, and seems about to confide in her, and then changes his mind. When she asks what he means he says he's just got a lot on his plate at the moment. She says she needs something stronger than coffee and gets a bottle of wine from the fridge.

In the pub, Tommy is full of regrets about all the times he could have given more time to his grandfather. Just a couple of days ago Geoff had rung but Tommy was in a hurry to go out. He'd given curt, one word answers and practically hung up. He'd give anything to have that chat now. Just then Tina comes up and sees them both looking really glum. "Flamin' 'ell, who's died?" she jokes. Tommy mutters that it was his granddad. Tina tells him that's not funny. "He's not joking," says Tyrone, and Tina is mortified. Tyrone suddenly remembers he should have been home to meet Kirsty half an hour ago, and rushes off.

We see him run down the street and in through his front door. In the living room the table is set with a meal, but there's no one there.

Sunita is telling Karl how she feels trapped, and wonders if she needs some excitement in her life. He tells her it's over rated and advises her not to do anything now that she'll regret later. She says it sounds like he's speaking from experience. "Let's just say you're not the only one who feels trapped," he says. She presses him to tell her what's making him unhappy. He says he's ashamed of what he's become. She says he's not making any sense, she doesn't understand. Eventually he says, "It was me, the break-in, it was me."

Eileen's cooking and asks Paul to set the table. Without thinking he sets 3 places. Then he tells her it's going to take a while to get used to not having Lesley around.

Tyrone's sitting at home when Kirsty comes back, all seething and frosty. He asks where she's been and says he was worried because her phone was off. "That's because I switched it off," she says. He asks why. "Because I couldn't bear to hear any of your pathetic excuses about where you'd been and why you couldn't be bothered to turn up," she snaps. He tells her he'll explain if she'll just give him a chance. "Go on then," she says, "but I'm warning you this better be good." He starts to say that he went to the Rovers with Tommy, but before he can go any further she tells him to go back there and picks up his dinner and smashes the plate to the floor. As he starts to pick up the pieces she screams at him to go back to Tommy. "He doesn't need me now, he's got Tina," he says. When she asks what he means Tyrone explains that Tommy was upset. "His granddad died today."

Sunita is cross with Karl and asks him to go. He begs her not to tell Stella any of this. "What, that it wasn't me or Tina who took the money, it was you?" she snaps. He tells her he was desperate and needed the money to pay off his debts. "What debts?" she wants to know. He says she can take her pick - bank, bookies, credit cards, he's up to his eyes. He kept thinking if he just got one big hit on the tables, everything would be all right, but it just got worse. She urges him to tell Stella, saying the police will know something isn't right. He says he can't. "Then I can't help you," says Sunita, and she shows him out.

Friday 6 April

Hello and welcome to another Friday night.

We begin the first episode with Tyrone coming out of the Kabin and spotting Tommy sweeping the garage forecourt. He points out it's Good Friday and the garage isn't open. It's clear Tommy's just trying to take his mind off his grandfather's death. He tells Tyrone he's not going to Jeff's funeral.

At Eileen's, Paul's on the phone finding out that Lesley seems to be settling in well at the care home. Jason has been summoned so Eileen can tell him she's asked Paul to move in and Sean and Marcus will also be moving back in. Jason's grumpy and impatient and refuses to give Eileen and Paul his blessing.

In the pub, the police question Karl and Stella about the theft. Tina and Sunita watch on. Tina wouldn't put it past Stella to blame one of them but she suspects Stella might have done it herself for the insurance.

Sylvia asks the machinists in the cafe whether everything is back to normal. Izzy points out that it's likely to change because nobody knows what's going to happen to Frank's half share of the business. Sally comes in, looking quite unwell, and they bombard her with questions. Can Carla make decisions? What will happen to Frank's shares? Can they still run the business with one partner dead?

In the back room of the pub, Karl and Sunita chat. He's desperate that Stella doesn't find out the truth about the theft of the money. He tells Sunita he doesn't want her to lie but he doesn't want her to tell the whole truth, either. He says he got himself into this mess and he'll get himself out. Sunita wants to help but he says she can't - he needs £300. To his surprise, Sunita says if he comes round at lunchtime she'll have the money for him.

Tyrone closes the garage door and tells Tommy to phone Doreen. Tommy snaps at him and stomps off. Tina's passing by and Tyrone tells her the problem.

In the cafe, Paul tells Eileen he's back on day shifts and Eileen's glad they can start to have a normal life. Tracy comes in and is very sarcastic about Lesley and is glad she's "locked up." She thinks that's only fitting for any loony who abducts her daughter. She's being very nasty, as only Tracy can be, when Jason comes in and tells her to keep her evil thoughts to herself. Eileen tells Paul that on second thoughts, "normal" might take longer than they thought.

In the pub, Kirsty and Tyrone discuss what to do with the day. She wants Tyrone to choose but the best he can come up with is going to the Red Rec. Kirsty says it's not fair if she chooses, but she whispers her choice to Tyrone anyway. His face lights up and he says he's gone off the idea of the Red Rec.

Owen finds Fay sitting in the street. She's bored because all her friends have gone away. She tells him Anna doesn't believe in Easter so she hasn't even got any Easter eggs.

Across the road, Karl calls at Sunita's and she hands him an envelope. He tells her he's going straight to put the money in the bank. However, as he walks past the bookies' he sees Peter and exchanges a few words. He hesitates briefly then goes inside.

Owen arrives at the cafe with a HUGE Easter egg for Fay. Owen tells her Fay's lonely and deserves a treat. Anna comes in and tells Owen he shouldn't have got the egg, but she offers him a sticky bun so can't be too upset.

Sally calls at Tyrone's house to ask if he knows where Kevin's gone. Tyrone's in his dressing gown and puffing hard. He tells Sally's he's been doing some exercise recommended by Ryan Giggs.

In the pub, Sylvia's having trouble deciding what to drink.

Peter and Carla are at a table and Peter checks that Carla will be OK looking after Simon while he goes to his mediation meeting. Sylvia is still dithering over her choice. Tina asks for the afternoon off. Carla gets a phone call from Sally asking for a meeting but Sally won't tell her what it's about.

In the cafe, Anna hears what Fay told Owen and points out that the cunning miss had a whole tray of Easter eggs at breakfast! She admits that Fay misses out because they can't afford to go away. Owen offers Anna a rent break but she refuses angrily, thinking Owen's trying to buy his way back into her life.

In the pub, Sylvia dithers away. Tina sits with Tommy, telling him he needs a shower. He's sad, angry and upset and doesn't want Tina having another go at him. But she says she's in charge and he needs to sort himself out so she can knock some sense into that skull of his.

At the pub, as Sylvia gets close to deciding what she'd like to drink, a bailiff arrives, looking for Karl. Karl owes money on a loan. He's failed to make any repayments and the bailiff is empowered to seize goods to the value of 3758 pounds. While Stella takes him through to the back, Sunita makes a panicked call to Karl. He says he can't come back right now but it's clear that as she listens to him, Sunita can hear the sound of the racing announcers in the background.

At home, Tommy's still not keen on getting cleaned up. Tina tells him he should think about what Doreen's going through and there's a train to Blackpool at three. Tommy says he can't face it. He feels he let down Jeff by going round the world when Jeff wanted him to go to college. He thinks he'll fall apart if he talks to Doreen or goes to the funeral. Tina gives him a chat about what happened when her dad died and says it took a good friend to put her back together. Now she'll help put Tommy back together to pass on that good turn. "Don't argue. Trust me."

At the bistro, Eva rushes in and grabs money from the till, telling Nick her mother needs the cash urgently and will pay him back.

Tommy's on the phone to Doreen, saying he's on his way, and Tina has a taxi ready and waiting to take them to the station. No, I have no idea why a barmaid would order a taxi to take them there when the Metrolink line (which goes straight to Piccadilly station) is right above their heads.

The bailiff is happy with the money Eva's managed to get but warns he'll be back if no payments are made. Sunita asks if everything's OK but Stella tells her it's not. Karl owes thousands of pounds and now she's worried that it was Karl who took the money from the safe. She asks Sunita to look after the bar while she and Eva try to find out what's going on.

Carla and Sally meet at the bistro. Sally says the workers are worried about Underworld's future. Carla has no idea what will happen to Frank's share of the business. Sally's already consulted her solicitor - the shares are likely to be sold on the open market and if Carla can't afford to buy them, Sally can. She's still got her scratchcard money in the bank. Carla's stunned (and very afraid, I'd say) and tells Sally she'll have to give the proposal a lot of thought.

Karl's debts are far worse than Stella feared. He owes four grand on one credit card and there are at least two more, plus some envelopes she dare not open. It seems he maxes out a card then gets another and never makes any payments. Eva's found bills in his sock drawer and on top of the wardrobe. There are bills and reminders and Karl's ignored the lot. "I don't know how I am ever going to pay any of this back," says Stella. "We're bankrupt. I'm ruined. I am seriously going to kill him!"

The end for now.
Does Stella kill Karl? Will Sylvia ever make her mind up? All might be revealed in the second episode.

Stella is going through paperwork and is not liking what she is finding. They are up to their ears in debt, all thanks to Karl, and she cannot for the life of her figure out what he has done with all the money. Eva is sympathetic, but can't shed any light on what Karl has been up to either.

In the cafe, Faye is asking Anna if she can eat the enormous Easter egg she was given. Anna tells her she can't, in fact she suggests she give it back as she doesn't need an egg that big. As a compromise, Faye offers to share it with her, but Anna says she doesn't want any because she knows why it was given. Faye wants her to expand on that, but Anna declines. Faye then asks why Anna has to work all the time, and Anna gives her the obvious answer that they all have the nasty habit of getting hungry at regular intervals. Unconcerned about that, Faye goes on to tell her that a friend of hers is going to Alton Towers soon, and asks if they can go with them. Anna once again gives her a reality check, and explains that they just don't have the funds to do that, that they don't have money for anything except the overdue bills. She points out that she knows that is the reason why Owen is trying to get back into her good books, and she is not having it. "Why not?" says Faye, "I like him now, and he can buy us stuff". Another little gold digger in the making methinks. Anna explains to her that she is not for sale, and she doesn't spend time with people just because they buy her things, she would sooner starve. An angry Faye then grabs her egg and makes out the door, retorting that in that case, she won't be wanting any of her egg then.

Fiz comes in just as Faye is leaving. Takes one look at Anna, and tells her she looks as if she could do with a drink. Anna smiles weakly.

Karl comes into the Rovers full of the joys of Spring and asks Sunita for a pint. Instead, Sunita advises him to go straight through to the back as Stella has been looking for him all afternoon. Sunita looks more worried than he does - so far...

Anna and Fiz arrive, and a very tipsy Sylvia accosts them suggesting they trump up for a large dry sherry in exchange for the gossip of what has been going on in there.

It's pretty obvious that Karl knows what he is in for, because he takes a deep breath before going into the back room. However, he puts on a big smile, and greets the two women in his life with an apology for being unreachable, but he got tied up in town. Stella quietly asks Eva to leave, which she does, scowling at Karl on the way out.

Unnerved, Karl asks Stella what's going on. She replies that it is a question he should be answering, not asking. She then questions him about the robbery of the safe, and as to why a bailiff had been looking for him to recover unpaid debts, to which he tries pleading ignorance, but she shouts that he should just stop it, that she has found his stash of unpaid debts amounting to thousands of pounds, and demands an explanation.

Leanne and Peter are in the office of a mediator, and she is asking if they know why they are there. Peter responds that he has no idea, as far as he is concerned, he has a son, he is the boy's natural father, Leanne is not the boy's natural mother and he stays with him - end of story! Leanne responds that Peter is a recovering alcoholic. Peter interrupts her saying that the emphasis should be on the 'recovering', that the boy should not be punished for his past mistakes, that he is his father and he belongs with him.

The mediator tells them they are there to try to find some common ground, and to do what is best for Simon. Both Peter and Leanne agree with that. However, they cannot agree on which of them he should live with. Peter is convinced that she only wants Simon to punish him (Peter). Leanne says that she wants him because of Peter's erratic lifestyle, and he would have a more stable life with her.

Tommy and Tina are back from seeing Doreen Horton. Tommy thanks her for her support, and tells her he couldn't have gotten through it without her. She tells him she understands totally how he is feeling, having gone through what she did when her father died. She tells him that it's not over yet, he still has the funeral, and that's the easy part. The grieving will kick in after that. She continues talking about the feelings he can expect to have, and notices that Tommy is crying. she moves in, puts her arms around him, and is about to kiss him when they are interrupted by Jason arriving home.

In the back room of The Rovers, Karl is still trying to talk his way out of this one, and it's not working too well. He tries to explain that it all got out of hand, what started with a little flutter here and there got worse and worse until he couldn't stop. "Besides", he said - "I did it for you". Not a good tactic Karl, because Stella jumps off the deep end at that. He tries to tell her that it was so she could have the money for the pub, and live her dream. She is not having that, oh no! She is not going to let him turn this whole disaster back onto her. Good try though Karl.

The mediator is still trying to make Peter and Leanne come to a decision that is in Simon's best interests. Peter cannot see why they are having the discussion at all, as far as he is concerned, he is Simon's only biological parent, and he lives with him, end of story. So Leanne has to dig a little deeper into the dirt and asks him how many times in the last 6 months he has fallen off the wagon, which of course he doesn't answer. So she then digs down a bit further and asks him why he confessed to a murder he didn't commit, and knowing he wouldn't answer that one either, tells the mediator that it was because he couldn't remember whether he had done it or not, due to being drunk on the night in question.

Peter then tells the mediator that he will never agree even to joint custody, because Leanne is driven by anger and jealousy. Leanne retorts that she couldn't care less about him and Carla, they can both drink themselves to death for all she cares, all she cares about is what is best for Simon. "Then in that case," says Peter, "He will live with me where he belongs". He then turns to the mediator and tells her that this meeting is not getting them anywhere, and he is leaving now because he wants to see his son before he goes to bed. With that he marches out the door, leaving Leanne sitting there shaking her head.

Tina is in the Rovers bending Sunita's ear about how stupid and insensitive she feels she has been towards Tommy by trying to kiss him when he was so upset over his Granddad. Sunita tells her that she doubts it, and besides she is not the only one in there tonight with problems.

LOL!! I didn't think they would do it, but Anna and Fiz have duly lubricated Sylvia with her large dry sherry, and are getting all the gossip about Karl and Stella. Norris has been doing it all wrong all these years, he could learn a lot from Sylvia on how to turn gossip to your own advantage. He gives it away for free!

The big fight is still going on in the back room, and Karl is still adamant that he did it all to protect Stella, that if only he could have had one big win, it would all have been sorted. He promises her he will pay it all back, and when she questions how he plans to do that, he tells her he will knuckle down and work every hour that God sends. Stella tells him she has a better idea, why not fake a robbery and claim on the insurance? Karl knows he has been rumbled, and tells her he was desperate, and didn't know what else to do. Stella however has an even better idea, and throws him out, telling him never to come back! She does it through the front door too, so all the punters are witness to it. As soon as he has gone, she announces that the pub is now closed, they can take their drinks with them if they wish, but to please get out - now! Once they are alone, she tells Eva that she will have that gin and tonic now.

After the break we open with Tina and Tyrone eating chips outside the Chippy. He asks Tina how Tommy is doing, and she tells him that he is grieving. She is still beating herself up about trying to kiss Tommy at a time like that. Tyrone can't see what the problem is, he points out that she knows that Tommy has liked her for ages. However, Tina thinks he won't now she has made such a fool of herself. Tyrone suggests that she just talk to him.

It must be a day for women beating themselves up, because Stella is doing it now in the Rovers. She just can't understand why she couldn't see what was going on under her nose. Eva points out that men have been devising ways of deceiving women for centuries. That being said, she tells Stella how impressed she was that Nick hadn't even questioned why she wanted to take money from the Bistro in such a hurry, that he trusted her. She tells Stella that although she may not want to hear it right now, she really thinks that Nick is one of the good ones. Stella assures her that she really needs to hear something like that right now. She tells Eva that she should hold onto him, but at the same time, she should never trust him, never turn her back on him and never give him an inch, she then dissolves into tears.

Karl is sitting on Maxine's bench, and Sunita comes over full of sympathy at how cold he looks. He tells her that he left without his jacket, and that it's probably part of a bonfire now in the back yard. Sunita invites him to her place for some warming tea.

Jason comes into the room and finds Tommy still sitting on the sofa. He asks if he has eaten and is told he is not hungry. Jason tells him he has to eat, that it's important. He goes on to explain how Tina had reacted when her father died, locking herself away and not eating. He presses him further to at least have a biscuit or something.

Tommy tells him that he feels there must be something wrong with him, that he has just come from his grieving family, and all he can think about is Tina. Jason tells him that is normal, that at times like that it's easy to get your emotions confused. Tommy assures him he is not confused, that he has always known that she is the one he wants. Jason suggests he tells her how he feels, but Tommy thinks that she would think he was taking advantage of her when all she was doing was helping him through it all. So Jason tells him to leave it a few days then, he doesn't know, but he does know that he has to eat something, and he mustn't stop eating!

Now it is Sunita's turn to have her ear bent by Karl, not that she is minding very much. He tells her that he hadn't wanted to come to Weatherfield in the first place, that it had all been Stella's idea. She hadn't even told him at the time about Leanne. Sunita tells him he can't blame Stella, after all, he hadn't told her about his gambling. She tells him that she does know about lack of communication in a relationship, after all, she is here and Dev and the children are in Majorca. Karl asks her if they will split up, and she replies that she doesn't know. She then asks if he and Stella have. He answers that he thinks they have, because he can't see her taking him back, and he is not sure he wants to go back.

Fiz and Anna have moved over to the Bistro, and Anna is drinking water to save money. They are speculating as to whether the pub will reopen or if it's closed for good. Anna tells Fiz that their money worries has served to put hers more into perspective.

Jason joins Eileen and Paul at their table, and fills them in on the gossip in the Rovers, and tells them that Stella has closed up. Both Paul and Jason go up to the bar at the same time, and have a little good natured banter over who is going to pay for Jason's drink. Eileen smiles to see them getting along so well.

Tommy is trying to do as he is told, and is dunking what looks like a digestive biscuit into his tea. It's only half there, but I would guess the rest fell in rather than it went into Tommy's mouth. He suddenly looks as if he has made his mind up about something and leaves the biscuit where it is, and walks out the front door, and bumps right into Tina who was on her way in. They both stutter over their explanation as to why they were both looking for each other. Tina says that she really needs to tell him something, Tommy says "No, me first", she puts her hands over her eyes and takes a deep breath, but Tommy gets in first with "I love you". She looks at him in amazement, says nothing, but throws herself into his arms and kisses him.

Peter is relating the meeting with the mediator to Carla, and his version of course has the whole thing as a setup by Leanne. In his mind, she knew it would push all his buttons, forcing him for walk out. LOL, he is amazing isn't he? Carla asks what will happen next, and he tells her he expects it will go to court.

He then asks her how Simon had behaved for her while he was gone. She asks if he wants the truth or the sugar coated version. He opts for the latter, and she tells him he was such a little angel. So he then asks how bad he really was, Carla tells him that he is in bed, and she hasn't opened a bottle, so they must be making progress. She then tries to reassure him that there is no way Leanne can take him. Peter remarks that the lawyers can twist things around and make anything happen that they want. Carla tells him they will then get better lawyers themselves, because she has money being injected into the company in the name of a new partner called Sally. She tells him that Sally is hardly her idea of an ideal partner, but if they can stabilize the company, they can put all their energies into making sure the little angel stays under their roof.

Leanne has now been filled in on the day's events at the Rovers by Stella and Eva. Stella is telling them that it will take her years to pay off all Karl's debts. Eva and Leanne offer to help, but Stella declines, saying the problem is all hers, she took her eye off the ball, and it was hers to sort out. Leanne asks her what she is going to do about Karl. Stella says she knew he always sailed close to the wind, that is why she fell for him in the first place, and she is sure he will come crawling back in the morning telling her he loves her, and begging her to forgive him, but she is not sure she can do it any more.

Tommy is on the sofa again, at least it looks like a sofa, but not the same one he was on before. This time however, I think it might be a sofa bed, and he is naked, and so is Tina, and they are covered up with a fluffy blanket. They must have done the deed, because he is asking her if she has any regrets. She tells him she hasn't and asks him the same question. He replies that he only regrets that it took them so long to get together. He tells her that his Granddad would have liked her, she replies that her Dad would have liked him too.

Karl makes a move to leave Sunita's, but she tells him he is not going anywhere. She reminds him that he owes her £300, and that she knows he spent it in the bookies because she could hear it in the background when she called him. She tells him that she doesn't have money to throw away, she took it from the shop, and now he has lost it all. "Actually", says Karl, "I won". He goes on the tell her that when he was down to the last £10 the horse came in, so after the whole afternoon in the bookies, he broke even. "You still gambled my money", says Sunita. He hands her the £300 and tells her to take it back, otherwise he won't be able to walk past Barlow's in the morning.

As he makes to leave, she asks him where he is going. He doesn't know, but feels he is no good for anyone. Sunita tells him that he needs help, and that she intends to help him get it. She assures him that no matter what happens with Stella, he still has her. He asks her why she is doing this, and is told that she cares about him, that she believes in him, he needs her and she will never let him down. She tells him he can't stop her, so to get himself another beer, and she will make up the bed on the sofa. He kisses her on the cheek and tells her he doesn't deserve her. By the look of rapture on Sunita's face, I would say they probably deserve each other.

Monday 9 April

Eva and Leanne find Stella in the darkened pub thinking. She tells them Karl has stitched her up. Eva suggests seeing the accountant for some help. She doesn't think it will help but her two daughters give her no choice. Stella agrees and goes to call. Leanne asks if Stella will be ok. Eva thinks her mother is pretty tough. She'll have to be, ruminates Leanne.

In spite of the fact that there are two empty child-size beds, Karl has spent the night on Sunita's mini-sofa. She finds him folding up the duvet. He admits he didn't sleep much and thanks her. He's not sure he'll see Stella straight away. She wishes him good luck.

Tina greets Jason and hands him a coffee. Jason went out with his mother and Paul the night before. Sounds like he's finally coming to terms with it and at least Paul makes Eileen happy, he says. He asks what she did last night. Tommy comes out of the bedroom and they snog to Jason's amazement but he's made up for them.

Lewis and Audrey are back from their holiday. She's going in to do some stock taking before tomorrow. David comes around the corner with a sarcastic remark. He tells her he's got a new job at a new salon in town. He reckons it's in the bag.

Leanne is having a late breakfast in the cafe when Peter, Carla and Simon come in. Of course Simon is keen to see Leanne. Peter starts to pull him away but Carla stops him and tells him that maybe he should let Leanne see more of Simon. It will be better for Simon if they aren't tearing lumps out of each other. He's reluctant but he gets up and offers Leanne to have Simon for the day. She is happy to take him up on the offer and Simon is tickled, too. He sits back down with Carla, clearly not sure about that decision.

Karl comes into the pub. Eva gives him a cold word or two. She tells him he owes her 256 quid for the bailiffs and expects it tomorrow. She turns and leaves. Tina stays out of it.

Sally approaches Carla to ask about the buy in. Carla puts her off and says she's not decided yet.

Tommy waits outside for Tyrone to get to the pub. Doreen calls him and he takes the call. Down the road, Stella gives Peter a hard time for taking Karl's money. She reveals that Karl has gambled away 20 grand. Peter had no idea his gambling was that bad. He asks if she's going to lose the pub. She doesn't know yet. He says he won't serve Karl if he comes in.

Tommy looks thoughtful. Seems his granddad left him 12 thousand pounds in his will. He's gobsmacked and doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. He explains it's the first time in his life he's ever had money, he's got the girl of his dreams but he's lost the only real dad he ever had. Ty leads him down to the pub and says he should splash a bit of money and do something nice with Tina, to remember his Grandad.

Karl comes to the pub to talk to Stella. She informs him she's been to the accountant who wasn't much help but suggested she see an insolvency practitioner to work out an agreement with all his creditors. They may or may not agree to the plans. She tells him business isn't booming so who knows if they'll have the money to work it out. She gives him a hard time for putting them in that position and he promises never to gamble again. He's also going to ask Steve for his job back. We hear the phone ringing in the background. After Karl leaves, Tina pops her head round and says the brewery is on the phone but says she'll put them off.

Karl comes out of the pub and walks towards Streetcars but finds a bit of money in his pocket. He pulls it out and nearly drools at the sight of the betting shop.

Kevin is in the shop talking to Sophie. Sally comes in to invite Sophie into town later for company but Sophie has to work late. Kevin invites her to the pub later if she can stand his company. She smiles and agrees. Sophie looks at her father and shakes her head. He never gives up does he? He grins.

Karl comes into the bookies and Peter refuses to serve him causing him to go out growling.

David has started at the posh *new* salon in town but is set to sweeping up and is told he has to start at the bottom like everyone else. It's a new business. Wouldn't they all be starting off together?

Sunita comes into the pub which is quiet. Tina tells her that Karl and Stella are rowing but Stella's hiding it. Sunita knows there's a lot more to it and Tina wants to know how she knows. Stella comes out and wants to know the same thing, bristling. Sunita admits Karl has confided a bit about it. Stella isn't best pleased and wants to know more. Sunita and she go into the back for a private chat.

Peter admits to Carla that she probably was right about letting Leanne spend more time with Simon. Carla tells him that Sally is still keen to buy into the factory. Problem is, Sally's a pain in the backside but she needs the money infusion. He reckons Sally is the devil you know and she should talk to Sally about it.

Sunita admits to Stella that Karl was confiding in her and she feels stuck in the middle between him her promise of confidentiality and Stella. She doesn't react all that well and tells Sunita she just wants to be alone and wishes people wouldn't keep her in the dark.

Tommy splashes out on an armful of flowers from Dev's. He tells Sophie he's not a sleazebag nor is he in the doghouse. He's bought the flowers as a declaration.

Leanne brings Simon into the back room of the pub, surprising Stella. She sends Simon to get crisps and tries to comfort Stella who feels stupid. She knew Karl was gambling but didn't realize how bad it was getting. Leanne commiserates, she always knew Carla was the Black Widow when it comes to other people's husbands... Stella interrupts her as Simon returns. Stella goes to help behind the bar.

Tommy finds Tina in the smoking shelter gathering glasses and keeping out of Stella's way. He makes her close her eyes and brings in all the flowers. She's pleased but dismayed at the cost. He tells her not to worry and he's got another surprise at the flat.

Peter comes to get Simon. Stella thanks him for letting Leanne see Simon and for the chat about Karl. Peter admits that Karl did come into the betting shop and he didn't serve him. Stella sighs and is on the warpath.

Tommy comes into the flat. Jason has a stack of dvds and a curry on order and is ready for a bank holiday night in. Tommy asks him to go out because he wants a romantic evening. In order to bribe Jason, Tommy ends up promising to do all the housework for 2 months.

In the bookie flat, Peter and Carla are happily bickering in the kitchen. Simon isn't hungry because he's had crisps. Peter is annoyed but Carla tries to smooth things over. Simon asks what a Black Widow is. Carla cozies up to him and tells him it's a scary nasty spider, trying to tease him into a giggle. Simon admits Leanne had called her one. Uh oh. Peter is upset, Carla tries to minimize it but Simon smiles to himself, recognizing a nerve hit.

Stella is waiting outside the pub. He tells her that Steve wasn't around. She confronts him about betting. She then tells him to pack his bags. She doesn't want the aggro and she doesn't want him. She wants him out of her life.

Tvor

Written by Mark Burt and directed by John Anderson

Karl comes downstairs with his bag packed and his tail between his legs. When Stella shows him she's got out his favourite football shirt ready to take, it's clear she really intends to chuck Karl out. He tries to talk her out of it but we can see Leanne, Eva and Sunita hovering around in the background listening in to Stella telling him she means it. Karl leaves and Stella sobs in Eva's arms.

Over in the salon Audrey is praising Maria for the excellent takings in her absence while Lewis seems to have taken on a new role as tea boy. Audrey is concerned David may have been a nuisance so is surprised to hear that Maria hasn't heard a peep out of him. Lewis doesn't look too convinced when Audrey suggests they may have turned a corner with David.

If only Audrey could see what her grandson is actually up to. He's been reduced to sweeping up hair at the trendy salon in town and it doesn't look as though his supercilious new boss is going to let him near a pair of scissors any time in the next ten years, especially when he hears that David was taught to cut hair by his grandma.

Over at Peter's flat, Carla is trying her best to get on with Simon but he makes it very clear he's not interested in meeting her halfway and stomps off to his room. Peter is furious with Leanne for provoking the situation. Carla tells him that Simon will get used to her in time but that's not enough for Peter. He's all for calling Leanne but Carla says he can't go ringing his ex-wife every time she says something nasty about her. As Carla leaves she tells Peter to promise he won't go making matters any worse. No sooner is Carla out of the door than Simon emerges from his bedroom.

Tommy has prepared a romantic dinner for two. He's just making adjustments to the lighting when Tina comes in with her arms full of the flowers which Tommy bought for her. The meal turns out to have an international theme, which is Tommy's way of telling her what he has planned. He explains to Tina that his granddad left him £12,000 in his will and asks her if she'll go with him on a round-the-world tour.

In the pub Sally and Kevin are having a drink. Sally's been shopping and tells Kevin that one of the perks of being divorced is that she no longer has to hide the receipts. Carla arrives to find that Sally has already taken the liberty of buying her a drink.

Stella arrives back behind the bar and apologises to Sunita for taking so long. She tells Sunita she can go home but Sunita is concerned that will leave Stella on her own. "I'm on my own either way," replies Stella, giving Sunita rather a pointed look.

Sally and Carla are discussing the factory. Sally says she's up for the challenge so Carla replies that she's game if Sally is and that, as soon as Frank's shares become available, she'll expect Sally to make her an offer. Sally says she's lost for words and Kevin quips that Carla should savour the moment.

Leanne asks Stella if she's O.K. and Stella reassures her that she's fine. At that moment Leanne's phone rings. It turns out to be Peter who has clearly ignored Carla's request to leave well alone and is on the warpath. Leanne tells him she'll go straight over but on her way out, goes over to Carla's table and tells her she's been summoned.

Karl walks in and slaps a wad of notes onto the bar. He tells Stella it's a grand for her and Eva. She hands it straight back and tells him she doesn't want his gambling money. But her expression soon changes to one of incredulity when Karl tells her how he came by the money: he's sold his precious semi-final football shirt. "I thought you said you'd never be parted from that shirt," says Stella. "I said the same thing about you," replies Karl. "And look what happened."

Karl arrives on Sunita's doorstep with his suitcase. She lets him in without speaking a word.

Simon is delighted to see Leanne but his pleasure is short-lived as he's packed off to his room so that Peter can talk to her. He takes Leanne to task for undermining him and then calling Carla a black widow within Simon's hearing. Leanne attempts to defend herself and wants to know why she's suddenly been labeled as the baddie in the whole situation. But Peter isn't giving an inch and reminds Leanne that she's only Simon's step-mother whilst he is his father and then tells her he doesn't want her seeing Simon any more.

At Sunita's, Karl is filling her in on what happened between him and Stella. Whilst Sunita is pointing out to him that Stella must be hurting, we can see that Stella's likely to be hurting a lot more fairly soon if the way Sunita's skirt is riding up her legs and her chest is trying to escape out of her top is anything to go by. As the two of them sit ever closer on the sofa, Sunita tries suggesting to Karl that he needs help with his gambling but he says he's not interested in joining any kind of self-help group when he's got Sunita to talk to. He wants to know why she bothers with him so Sunita tells him it's because she cares and, just to prove what she means, kisses him full on the mouth. She apologises for her actions but Karl looks more than happy with the turn of events and we can see things are about to get very hot and steamy on the sofa.

Meanwhile in the Rovers, Stella is talking to Eva about Karl. The fact that he sold his precious football shirt has made Stella realise how much he cares and she's clearly starting to regret throwing him out. Eva tries telling her mother that she can't feel sorry for a man who owes her twenty grand but Stella tells her that she still loves him.

On the other side of the bar, Sally is talking profit-sharing schemes with Carla while Kevin watches, obviously impressed with his ex-wife's business acumen. Carla tells her she appreciates Sally's input while Sally retorts that she appreciates not being patronised. Sally then tells Carla that this isn't some vanity exercise and that, if she goes into business with her, she'll be in it for the long haul. Carla can tell when she's beaten so she replies that she'd like to see Sally's ideas on paper. While Carla goes off to buy them all another drink, Kevin tells Sally he thinks she's terrific and that he's never seen this side of her before.

Back at Peter's flat, Leanne is desperately trying to get him to change his mind about her not seeing Simon any more. She tells Peter that by hurting her he's only hurting Simon and that they've got to think about what he wants but Peter isn't budging. He tells her that he has to look to the future and he's sorry but Leanne isn't part of it.

We return to Sunita's where she and Karl are putting their clothes back on. Sunita looks awkward when her phone rings; it's the kids' bedtime and Dev is calling her from Mallorca. Just as Karl is telling her he should go, there's a knock at the door. Sunita has a quick peek through the curtain. "It's Stella!" she tells Karl in horror.

Tommy and Tina are enjoying their candlelit dinner while Tommy waxes lyrical to Tina about the places they'll visit on their trip. He seems to have the whole thing planned out but Tina doesn't share his enthusiasm. She says she thinks it sounds brilliant but there's no way she's going to allow him to blow his inheritance in this way. Tommy looks disappointed but Tina tells him that his grandfather would have wanted him to use the money to change his life for the better and that, thanks to Tommy, she's already happier than she's been for a long time.

Stella is sitting on the sofa where, only a few minutes previously, Karl and Sunita had been sharing their moment of passion. Sunita is listening while Stella tells her all about the football shirt and how she blames herself for a lot of what went wrong between her and Karl. Meanwhile, we see Karl hiding round the corner in the kitchen, listening to every word. Stella is now on a roll and tells Sunita how Karl has stood by her. When Sunita says it sounds as though Stella is having second thoughts and asks whether Stella still loves Karl she replies that it's hard not to. With that Stella says she has to get back to the pub and asks Sunita to let her know if Karl gets in touch. No sooner is Stella out of the door than Karl emerges from his hiding place.

In the Bistro, David is telling Kylie all about his new job or, rather, the new salon. He carefully omits to tell her what his work actually entails. At the bar we see Audrey listening in as she has a drink with Maria who is telling her how wonderful Marcus has been with the kids. She tells Audrey that she can't keep taking advantage of him so they really do need to look at getting in another stylist to help her out. Kylie overhears and tells them not to look in David's direction as he already has a new job with new opportunities. She turns her attention back to David, wanting to know what his new boss Aaron is like. His fairly non-committal but as Audrey joins in the conversation, Kylie volunteers that Aaron thinks David is management material. "I wouldn't go that far," says David, in the understatement of the year.

Back at Sunita's she's telling Karl that she's no mind reader but she thinks Stella wants him back. They look at each other awkwardly and then both agree that what just happened was a mistake. Sunita suggests Karl should go out by the back door, just in case.

Carla returns home. She can't believe what she's hearing when Peter tells her he's banned Leanne from having any contact with Simon. Just then Simon comes into the room so Peter says they need to have a little chat. He tells Simon he has to start being nice to Carla and then drops the bombshell that Simon can't see Leanne any more. "That could have been handled better," observes Carla, in the second understatement of the evening.

Over at the Rovers, Karl has returned. Stella assumes he's spoken to Sunita which he denies. Stella tells Karl she was wrong to throw him out but he replies she had good reason. As Karl sits down and takes Stella's hand in his he tells her he'll pay the money back. "You're damned right, you will," she responds before telling Karl she doesn't want any more secrets. "Not a chance, you can trust me," says Karl as he takes her in his arms and the titles roll.

Thursday 12 April

Karl bounces into the living room at the pub, and tells Stella he'll sort out the cellar and then go and see Steve about getting his job back. She tells him to forget the cellar, she doesn't want him doing any more work at the pub, she can't trust him near the drink and the money. She also takes his bank cards off him, saying it's all too tempting for him.

At the Platt's, David comes downstairs dressed in an old jumper and jeans. Gail asks if all the stylists dress as scruffily as that. He tells her that they do, and Kylie says she thinks he looks great. Gail asks how much it costs for a cut at his place, and he tells her it is a whole lot more than at Audrey's. Gail was thinking of making an appointment, but Kylie tells her it wouldn't do much for his credibility, his mum turning up. Kylie kisses him goodbye and says that Audrey will regret sacking David. Gail says Audrey will regret a lot before she's finished, when Lewis has taken her for everything she's got, and she's glad the salon is still in David's name. He and Kylie arrange to meet after work, and off he goes.

Peter's on the phone, and turns and asks Carla if she'll pick Simon up from holiday club. He's been asked to go to a meeting. Reluctantly she agrees, and when he's finished his call he asks her if it's a problem. Carla points out that Simon won't be too pleased to see her. "Well your his mum now, not Leanne," says Peter (what planet is this man on??) adding that she shouldn't let Simon see he's getting to her.

Much to everyone's surprise, Sally walks back into the factory. Fiz is glad to see her, but Michelle is rather frosty. Carla comes out of her office, and before she can stop her Sally announces to them all that she thought it would be a good idea to buy Frank's shares in order to help Underworld get back on its feet. She's the answer to Carla's prayers. The look on Carla's face doesn't seem to reflect this, however.

A somewhat sombre Tommy and Tina return from his granddad's funeral. Tommy tells her that she's got a big fan in his grandma. He's got lots of regrets though, thinking that he should have spent more time with Geoff. She tells him that his granddad must've been happy with him or he wouldn't have left him all that money. Tommy's been wondering what to do with it but he assures Tina he's not thinking of Thailand any more.

Kylie goes into David's new place of work and is shocked to see him sweeping up and being ordered about by the senior stylist. The stylist, Aaron, turns round and asks if he can help her. Thinking quickly she says she wants to make an appointment for right now. He says he's free, but it's David she wanted. She's come to see if he remembered her, he used to do her hair in Weatherfield. "So if you're free?" she smiles. David hands the broom and coffee cup to Aaron and escorts her to a chair.

Leanne is just leaving to go and see a solicitor regarding Simon. Stella says she can't believe Peter is being so unreasonable. Leanne can, he thinks his word is law regardless of what anyone else thinks, including Simon. She goes off and Stella then turns to Karl who has come back in, Steve is out so he's going to go back over there later. He offers again to do the cellar but she tells him instead to go to Frescho, and gives him a list and the money, saying she wants a receipt and the change. Sunita has arrived, and she asks Stella if she can go a bit early as Dev and the kids are due back. Stella says she's sure she'll be glad to see them, but Sunita doesn't look quite so pleased.

Kevin and Tyrone are outside the garage when suddenly Tommy pulls up in an old, very beaten up camper van. They fall about laughing, especially when he tells them he bought it as a surprise for Tina, he plans to take her touring this summer!

David has finished Kylie's hair and she pulls out a card to pay. Aaron takes it from her and looks at the name - Kylie Platt! A row then breaks out as Kylie protests that David is a brilliant stylist and shouldn't be sweeping floors. She calls Aaron a poser and says that David is ten times better. The result is that David is sacked and the two of them leave. "Now what am I going to do?" asks David as they step out into the street.

Karl is in the taxi office, pleading with Steve for his job back. He says he knows he was out of order, but it won't happen again. "What if you'd had an accident?" Steve asks, and says he would be stupid to give Karl another chance.

Stella tells Sunita and Tina that she can't pay their wages until Monday, but offers a sub of 30 pounds to Tina to see her through the weekend. Sunita quietly asks if Stella's going to be all right, and Stella says she will, but asks that she doesn't say anything to anybody.

Steve and Karl come into the pub, and Karl tells Stella that Steve has given him his job back. Steve mutters that he's short of experienced drivers. Stella says that she'll be picking up Karl's wages. Steve starts to laugh but soon realises she's not joking, and makes a hasty exit. Karl asks Stella if she had to put the boot in. "I've just had to tell my staff I can't pay their wages, so if you want to compare notes on embarrassment, feel free," snaps Stella.

Sunita's in the hall putting on her coat to go home to greet Dev and the kids. Karl comes out and tells her that he's going to try and make a go of it with Stella, it's the least he can do after all the trouble he's caused.

Sally takes cakes to the factory workers and tells them she wouldn't blame them if they were wary of her because of her involvement with Frank Foster. Izzy pushes her cake aside and says she can't help thinking back a month or two, Sally was singing a different tune then. Fiz says Sally had her head turned, and Kirk says Frank fooled him too. Just then Michelle comes along, but refuses a cake when Sally offers her one.

David and Kylie go into the Rovers. He wonders where he's going to get another job from. Kylie points out that he owns a salon. It's his business, not Audrey's, and he ought to be across there right now bringing in younger clients. David reflects on this and then says she's right. "So what are you going to do about it?" she asks.

Tommy brings a blindfolded Tina along to see the camper van. When he pulls the scarf off, she stares, much to the amusement of Tyrone and Kevin. "Am I supposed to know what that is?" she asks. He tells her that in a few weeks it will be a mobile palace that can take her to all the places her dad told her about. Tina is speechless. He tells her they can travel round Britain and Ireland, even Europe if she wants. They can do it in her dad's and his granddad's memory. She then says that this is the most thoughtful thing that anyone has ever done for her, and kisses him. Tyrone and Kevin look astounded.

Leanne comes out of the pub and sees Carla walk past on the other side of the Street with Simon, who she has obviously just met from school. Carla's taking him back to the factory and says he can sit at her desk if he wants.

In the salon, Audrey gets a call from David who wants to meet her for peace talks. She puts on her scarf while Maria tells her that she's too soft. Audrey says she just wants all this nonsense to be over.

With clipboard in hand, Sally approaches Carla and asks if she's had a chance to look at the new ideas she put forward. Carla says she hasn't as yet, but suggests she develops them further. Michelle can barely contain her disgust and looks the other way. When Sally's gone, Carla tells Michelle to look on Sally as rich auntie that you have to put up with because of her money. Simon then appears, saying that after school he usually has a drink and something to eat. Hayley jumps up and takes him off for a hot chocolate. "How come Hayley knows what to do with him and I don't?" mutters Carla.

Kylie comes rushing into the salon and tells Maria she's seen Ozzy running loose in Viaduct Street. She tells Maria she'll watch the salon if she wants to go and find him. Maria rushes off, and then David comes in, locks the door and, grinning, kisses his wife!

Dev and the children arrive home. Sunita has prepared a table of food for the children and they tuck in immediately. Dev asks if anything has happened while he's been away, but she tells him it's been boring. He says the holiday was good but would have been better if she'd been with them. He realises she was right, he takes her for granted, but from now on things will be different, he's a changed man. "Don't make promises you can't keep," she says. He says he means it, he loves her. He gives her a hug. "And I love you," she says quietly.

Running down the street, Maria sees Audrey and tells her that Ozzy has run off. Just then they see Kirk walking along with Ozzy on a lead. Maria tells them that Kylie told her Ozzy was on the loose. "And David didn't meet me in the Bistro," says Audrey. She rushes over to the salon but can't get in. She bangs on the door and asks David what he's doing. "Reclaiming what's rightfully mine," says David. "And making sure Lewis doesn't get his hands on it," says Kylie. Audrey tells them not to be ridiculous but it's no good, they won't open the door. Kirk offers to break the door down, but Audrey won't let him. She says she'll be back tomorrow and they'll be out of there. As she goes to leave Kylie calls her back. "Enjoy your retirement," she says.

Friday 13 April

Welcome to another Friday night, where we begin in the salon. David and Kylie are both asleep when Gail arrives with their bacon butties for breakfast. She mentions Audrey's high blood pressure and the stress they must be putting on her but Kylie pooh poohs this. "Yeah, and shacking up with a male escort will do her the world of good." Owen arrives to change the locks.

In the street, Leanne meets Ken and discovers that Peter hasn't told him she's banned from seeing Simon.

Owen's finished fitting the new locks but they don't have time to lock them before Audrey comes charging in, demanding to know why Owen didn't ask her. He manages to escape so Audrey rounds on David, telling him he's not only bitten the hand that feeds him but he's swallowed it whole. He's destroyed 15 years' worth of her blood, sweat and tears. David protests that he's trying to save the business for her.

Tommy's in the VW Kombi van. It's pouring out so much smoke I suspect it's the one we took round Europe in 1984 with a re-spray. Nick comes over to the garage and tells Tommy you can smell the exhaust in Victoria Street. Tommy plans to take the van on its maiden voyage, taking Tina for a countryside run. Tyrone and Kevin laugh at the very idea. Tyrone tells him it's a money pit. "You said it was a death trap a few minutes ago. Make up your mind!"

Peter goes to see Ken to ask if Simon can go there after school and for his tea. Ken tells him he's wrong to ban Leanne from seeing Simon but Peter's determined. He says Leanne's been trying to turn Simon against Carla. Ken points out that banning Simon from seeing Leanne won't make him love Carla any more.

Stella is on Leanne's side. While she and Leanne talk, Karl says he's going out for a paper. On his way out, Sunita asks if he can bring up some mixers but he points out he's no longer working there. Neither of them notices St Ella watching what's going on.

Tommy and Tina are in the van. It doesn't start first go but soon they are off, to a barrage of heckling from Tyrone and Kevin. And as they turn from the garage forecourt on to the street the engine farts and dies.

At the bistro, Audrey tells Nick and Gail and Lewis about the locks being changed, against a background of Gail snarling at Lewis. Lewis tells Gail she should show some respect to her mother. Nick is sick of their bickering.

Audrey and Lewis leave the bistro with Lewis wondering whether they should revise their holiday plans, but Audrey refuses to let David force her into that. They meet Rita, who has been to the salon only to be told that Audrey doesn't work there any more. She doesn't want her hair touched by anyone else but Lewis says Audrey can't do much with premises. Audrey isn't so sure about that - and she's looking directly at Mary's motor home.

In the Kabin, Mary's busy putting magazines on the shelves and singing that old Musical Youth number, Pass The Dutchie." Audrey startles her into silence and asks questions about the motor home. Mary gets very defensive. She's got a perfect right to park it where it is. And of course it's got water and electricity. Audrey wants to hire it. "Are you going on holiday?" asks Norris. "No, Norris, I'm going to work!" Audrey says.

Tyrone's got his head in the Kombi's engine compartment - a position familiar to all Kombi owners (There's no point in writing in - I write from bitter experience and won't be changing my mind). It seems Tommy didn't even look at the engine before buying the van. Tyrone thinks the kindest thing would be to let it die with dignity. Tommy pushes past to have a look for himself and just succeeds in spraying himself with oil.

Mary's moved the motor home to directly in front of the salon, which brings Kylie and David out shouting about it blocking the salon's light. Mary gets out of the driver's door, slams it shut and locks it, to Kylie's horror. She's even more horrified when Audrey emerges from the back of the motor home and announces she'll be using it as her own salon. She's even got her first customer, Rita. The two go inside the vehicle and shut the door. David's face is a picture but Kylie tells him: "One punter who happens to be her best mate don't mean nothing!"

In the pub, Stella takes Sunita aside and tells her not to worry about Karl. She noticed how short he was with Sunita earlier. She asks Sunita whether Karl has told her anything about what's going on with him. Stella knows there's something. Sunita denies knowing any of Karl's secrets and Stella says Sunita must let her know if he gives her any more hassle.

The bistro is so full that Lewis talks to Nick about the possibility of expanding into the empty unit next door. Tommy and Tina arrive. Tommy hopes to salvage the afternoon by treating Tina to a nice meal but there's no room at the bistro. Even when Tommy passes Lewis a folded note there's no joy. Especially when Lewis points out it's a receipt for Nuts magazine. Tommy scrabbles around for the tenner he meant to hand over and makes excuses to Tina. "It was an old receipt . . ." But she's had enough and heads off to the Rovers for a butty.

Peter and Owen chat outside the betting shop. Peter's unsure whether he's doing the right thing by Simon but Owen assures him that being a Dad isn't about popularity.

David is going on about whether celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke had this much trouble with his family when Kylie, who has been keeping watch through the venetians, spots something and drags him outside. The something is Emily. Just as Audrey steps out to welcome her into the motor home, Kylie and David point out that Emily is in their appointment book. Audrey points out she always does Emily's hair. "Yeah, well, I wouldn't brag about it," sneers Kylie, looking at Emily's hair. "No offence," she tells Emily as an afterthought. But it's too late. Emily's offended and moves towards the motor home but Kylie grabs her by the arm. Audrey grabs the other. "She's mine!" There follows a tussle which only finishes when Emily manages to escape, telling them she's nobody's and "I don't want my hair done by either of you!"

Ken arrives home with Simon but won't let him have a treat before his tea. Simon says "Mum" always used to let him have something when he got in. He then becomes quite weepy and wonders what he's done to upset Leanne. He has friends whose parents have separated and they still see both parents. Ken relents and sends him into the kitchen to get a biscuit while Ken makes a phone call.

Kylie and David are depressed when they see another customer go to Audrey's temporary salon. Kylie says they have to attract a younger crowd and make the salon funkier. David has to take ownership of it.

Simon's reading Pinocchio when Leanne arrives. He hugs her very tightly.

In the pub, Sunita warns Karl that Stella knows there's something going on but not what. She thinks it might be best if she stopped working there.

David says farewell to someone - it's a sign writer who has just put a bally great "Under new management" sign on the salon's window. Audrey's aghast but Kylie doesn't think she's getting the message. "This is our place, now!"

Starting up where we left off in the last episode, Audrey is ranting at David and Kylie about the 'Under New Management' lettering on the Salon window. The row moves inside the Salon, along with Lewis who has just arrived. David tells Audrey that they are about to give the Salon a complete makeover, which upsets her all over again, and she accuses him of ruining her business. David retorts that he is not ruining it as much as Lewis would have had he been given half a chance. Lewis protests that he cares very much for Audrey, and has no designs whatsoever on her business.

Kylie joins in the attack on Lewis by telling him that she knows he is just upset because they have spoiled his little nest-egg. "It's MY nest-egg" pleads Audrey, but it falls on deaf ears. Lewis leads her outside to calm her down.

In the Rovers, Tommy is still taking a ribbing from Tyrone over his clapped out camper van. But Kirsty tackles Tyrone instead about still having the Pinup Calendar on display in the garage. Tyrone blusters that it belongs to Kevin, and that he's tried to get him to take it down, but he won't listen.

Tina appears, and Tommy apologises to her for the missed lunch. Tina is fine about it, and tells him she will let him off seeing as how his van has blown up. Tyrone then swings right back into old car jokes, like "why has your camper van got a heated rear windscreen?". Tommy has heard that one before, and tiredly groans "To keep me 'ands warm while I'm pushing it". Kirsty tells Tyrone to stop kicking a man when he's down, but Tommy assures them that he's not down, and that his camper van will rise again. "Just before it's dropped into the crusher", laughs Tyrone.

Back in the Salon, Kylie is in the process of hiring Owen to remove Audrey's sign from the window. He has a few misgivings about that, as he is worried about Audrey's reaction. Kylie assures him that Audrey has no say in the matter, and asks if he wants the job or not. Money is money, so Owen takes the task on.

David on the other hand is having an attack of guilt, and tells Kylie after Owen leaves that they are maybe going too far, because taking Audrey's name down will really hurt her. Kylie dares him not to go soft on her, and reminds him that Audrey sacked them both without a second thought for the child they have to support. David is still wavering, so she sticks the boot in, and reminds him that they are doing Audrey a favour by saving her from Lewis. Kylie presses on that they have to take it all the way if they are going to achieve anything, and that includes taking Audrey's name down. David is obviously going to cave in, but still has the decency to look a bit uncomfortable about it.

Peter arrives home to find the room filled with candles and dinner on the table. "Have we had a power cut?" he asks Carla. She sexily helps him off with his coat, and whispers that as Simon is having his tea over the road, she thought they might make the most of it. He is surprised to say the least that she might have gone to the trouble of cooking an exotic meal, but she admits she picked up a takeaway, but she has been keeping it warm, and by her attitude, I would say the food isn't the only thing that's a little warm either! Peter gets the message, and decides he is more than willing to take anything and everything that is on offer.

While they are preoccupied, Leanne is in her element playing a game of 'Guess Who' with Simon, who is obviously also in his element to have his Mum there. Leanne is no match for Simon, who beats her soundly. Ken then intervenes and suggests it's time Leanne was making tracks, she hugs Simon, and he begs her to please come back very soon. She promises to try.

On the way out, she asks Ken if she can see him again. Ken is not sure, as it puts him in such a difficult position, but tells her he will think about it. She thanks him for this visit, and kisses him on the cheek.

A shaken Audrey is finishing her drink in the Rovers, and Rita, who is there with Norris, asks her if she is feeling better. She replies that she would like to keep drinking to oblivion. She is still obviously hurt and angry about the 'Under new Management' sign, and can't believe her own family would treat her this way. Norris being Norris remarks that Audrey's family make the Borgias look like the Walton's. Lewis shuts him up by saying this is just a hairdressing salon, not the papacy, which affronts Audrey, as she feels he is trivialising her problems. He assures her he isn't, but feels it is not important enough to risk her health for.

Rita agrees with him, and tells Audrey that she is on her side, and is all for her getting her salon back, but she must look after her blood pressure. Audrey agrees that if she was on a monitor right now, it would probably be sky high. She goes on to beat herself up about putting the salon into David's name in the first place, and remarks that people probably thought she was out of her mind at the time. Norris is in the throes of agreeing with her, when he receives a swift kick under the table, and Rita assures her that everybody knows she only did it to take care of her Grandson after she goes, and to give him some stability while she is alive. She goes on to assure her that it was a well meant gesture. Lewis agrees, and tells her she must stop blaming herself, as the blame lies solely with David and Kylie.

Stella is collecting glasses from the smoking area, and is holding up a glass in disgust. Sunita appears, and Stella asks her why men always have the compulsion to throw their fag ends into the dregs of their beer. (I have often wondered why they do that too, such a disgusting habit! My mother used to own a cafe, and know first hand that some throw them into the dregs of their tea too! Ugh!) Anyway, Sunita is not there to discuss men's bad habits, but to hand in her notice.

Stella wants to know why, and she replies that it's just not working out for her, what with juggling shifts with the kids etc. Stella counters that she knows full well why, she knows that it is because of Karl. Just as a stricken look comes into Sunita's eyes, Stella clarifies by saying she knows it was because of the way Karl had spoken to her earlier in the day, and she is not to worry, because she will mark his cards about that. She will not accept Sunita's resignation, saying she will sort it, and she really needs her to stay. Sunita finds herself agreeing to stay on.

Back inside, the subject is still David and Kylie round the table. Rita tells Audrey that she feels the problem lies more with Kylie than David, that she brings out the worst in him. (I don't know about that, he wasn't doing too bad on his own before he ever laid eyes on Kylie). Anyway, Norris agrees with Rita, and remarks that Kylie makes her sister look like Doris Day - in fact she is practically feral. LOL!! Lewis agrees, and remarks that she would have better table manners had she been raised by wolves.

Audrey is now sounding defeated. She admits she cannot go on cutting hair in Mary's camper van, as it is less than ideal, and that David and Kylie have the law on their side. Rita is not having that, and tells her that she has 'right' on her side, and everyone from round there agrees that all the time her name is over that Salon door.... (oh dear), Mary, who has appeared from nowhere, interrupts right there, and tells Audrey she has just seen Owen taking her sign down.

Audrey rushes across the road and is horrified to see her name gone from the window. No longer defeated, her dander is now well and truly up, and she declares that this is now all out war!

After the break a triumphant Kylie is serving up a brew to David, and they are speculating on what they will call their Salon. David suggests 'Plaits' (as in Platt's), but Kylie's not keen on that, for a start, she thinks it has to be spelled differently to their name, but is not sure, and besides, it sounds as if they would be catering to little kids. She would rather have something more sophisticated like 'KD Hair Design'. David's not keen on that, because it would make people think of KD Lang, and would probably only appeal to Sophie Webster. He doesn't get much chance to follow that train of thought any further because his Gran and Lewis burst into the Salon, virtual guns blazing, and ask the young dynamic duo what they think they are doing.

Kylie tells her they were just thinking about what to call themselves, and asks Audrey if she has any ideas. Now if this went out after the watershed, I think Audrey might had told her, but as it doesn't, she just says "Yes, I can think of plenty, lady!" Audrey is now screaming angry, and demands to know what they were thinking of to remove her sign. Kylie smugly tells her that it's not personal, but business. She goes on to tell her that Marks & Spencer probably kept their name after they snuffed it because it was history. but in Audrey's case, she's just history.

Audrey doesn't see the nail file in Kylie's hand, she sees a red rag, and blows her top. When David tries to speak, she shouts him down, and tells him that she has done more for him over the years than any other Grandmother would have ever done, and this is how he repays her. On a roll now, she removes her coat, grabs what looks like a large file, and starts to scrape off the 'Under New Management' sign from the window. Kylie shrieks that this is criminal damage and is going to call the police. David first tries to stop Kylie, then tries to stop his Gran, but Lewis blocks his way, as we can hear Kylie speaking to the police in the background.

Ken is getting Simon ready to go home. They are having a discussion about the size of Ken's nose, as to whether it is big or not. Simon declares that it is bigger than his, which Ken concedes, but wants to know if it is extra big. Simon decides that it kind of suits his face, and that people are unlikely to stop and stare at it in the street, so Ken has to settle for that. Simon is still bubbling happy about seeing Leanne the previous evening, but Ken decides he had better warn him not to mention it to his father. Simon can't understand why, and asks what he should do if Peter asks him what he has been doing. So Ken tries to explain that it would only be a white lie, and asks if he knows what that is. Simon certainly does, and asks if it's like a woman asking her husband if her bum looks big, and the husband tells her it's not. Ken smiles, and tells him that indeed it is something like that. Simon agrees, but tells him that it's a good job they are not like Pinocchio, or they would both have big noses!

Tyrone is still cracking bad camper van jokes in the Rovers, like "How do you triple the value of your camper van instantly?" Tommy has heard that one too, and groans "You fill it up with petrol". Kirsty is getting tired of hearing them and tells Tyrone to get some drinks in. Tommy immediately tells him that he will get them. Kirsty tells Tina that she has a good one in Tommy, that he has been buying their drinks all night, glaring at Tyrone and says it's a good job that she at least has been on orange juice. Tommy replies that the drinks are not on him, but are on his Granddad, and they all raise their glasses to Jeff.

Ken has Simon home now, and the latter has been sent to brush his teeth, while Carla has nipped to the factory for a file. Ken takes the opportunity of trying to get through to his son about Leanne. He tells him he should be doing what is right for Simon, by allowing him to see her. Peter is adamant that he just needs time to adjust, and will get used to Carla quicker if he is not being confused by seeing Leanne. Ken advises him that the lad has a very close bond with Leanne, and if he breaks that, he could be breaking a whole lot more. He asks why he is going down that road when he doesn't have to. Peter insists that it is necessary, but can't elaborate as Simon appears and shows him his clean teeth. Peter remarks that it's nice to see him smiling again, and that he will have to ask Granddad what his secret is. Ken looks guilty, but mutters it was nothing special, they just played a game. Simon, seems to be enjoying this game of lying, and tells Peter that he won. Peter asks "Did he give you a kicking eh Granddad?" Ken, mutters he supposes so, but looks uncomfortable when Simon mimes a growing nose behind Peter's back.

Back in the Salon, Audrey is still ranting and scraping away at the letters on the window. She tells Kylie that once she gets the Salon back, she will bequeath it to the Weatherfield Dog's Home in her will. (Now that would be a first, we have never had a dog groomers on the Street before! Hey! Now that could give Kirkeh a meaningful job! I really like that idea.)

Lewis offers to take a turn at the scraping, but Audrey turns him down, telling him she is finding it quite therapeutic. Kylie is angry, and wants Audrey to get over there and stop her, any way he has to. David tells her he can't get physical with her, as she is his Gran. Audrey bristles now every time he refers to her as his Gran, she wants no part of him, and tells him not to be so squeamish, as a punch in the face would be akin to an olive branch considering what he has done to her already.

Oh dear, Mr. Plod the policeman arrives, and wants to know what is going on. Kylie's version is that a mad woman is attacking her front window with her best nail file. Audrey's version is that she is removing the graffiti from 'her' front window. The officer tells Audrey to put the file down, which serves to raise Audrey's voice up yet another octave, and refuses, frantically scraping. He asks her name, and she squeaks "Roberts, it's Roberts, my husband used to be Mayor, and he would be turning in his grave about now". The policeman is not impressed with who her husband used to be, and tells her again to put down the file. Again Audrey refuses, and Kylie is chirping in the background that he should be arresting her, as she is obviously drunk. David is sitting looking very upset at the turn of events.

Even Lewis is now urging Audrey to co-operate with the police, but the officer has had enough of Mr. Nice Guy, and pushes him aside, and moves in on Audrey, demanding she hand over the file. He places his hands on her shoulders, which startles her, and she whips around, sending the policeman off his balance, and he falls into a tall cabinet, and goes down, cabinet and all. Oh dear, this is not going to improve his disposition is it?

Tina arrives home to find Tommy laughing his head off at a 10 pin bowling chimp on TV. She wants to know where the big TV set has come from, so he tells her he bought it for £600. Her flabber is totally ghasted, and asks if it brings them a brew in the morning for that price. She tells him there was nothing wrong with the old telly, and what was he thinking? He looks crestfallen, and tells her he thought she would be pleased. She explains that she is touched that he wanted to do something nice for her, but it bothers her to see him squandering Jeff's money on gadgets they don't need and rounds of drinks. She assures him that with her especially, he doesn't have to buy affection. He asks what is the good of having money if you can't spend it, and Tina replies that there are better things to spend it on. She then says "We, no I mean you should be making plans for the future". He tells her he liked it better when it was "We", and she replies that she didn't want him to think she was making plans for his money. He tells her that as long as the plans are being made for the two of them, he is fine with it.

Things have become pretty ugly in the salon now. The officer is pulling himself back together, and Audrey is apologising to him, telling him she really didn't mean to push him, that she just got carried away. He is not impressed with her explanation however, and tells her she can save her excuses for the station. Lewis tries reasoning with him, but it falls on deaf ears, and Audrey is charged with Criminal Damage and Assaulting a Police Officer. Kylie can barely keep a straight face, she is so delighted, but David at least has the good grace to look horrified.

Ken arrives at the Rovers to have a word with Leanne. He breaks the news to her that it was too much for him to watch Simon lying to his father, and he hates lying to his own son too, and feels they cannot have a repeat visit. Leanne is devastated, and begs Ken to reconsider. He tells her that he doesn't agree with Peter at all, but cannot be put in that position any more. Poor Leanne is left heartbroken.

Norris, Mary and Rita are leaving the Rovers, and spy the police car across the road. They of course are speculating on the turn of events, and Mary states that she will be so glad when it's all over, because the hair is getting everywhere in her home, says she picked up an apple and it was more like a kiwi fruit, but then gets a dirty look from Rita when she elaborates to say that the 'kiwi fruit' was mainly orange hair.

Just then they are shocked to see Audrey being led out of the Salon under arrest. As she is being bundled into the car, she shoots a glare of hatred in David's direction and tells him that this is the end of things between the two of them, from now on, they are finished! David turns to Lewis and begs him to tell his Gran he is sorry, that he didn't mean it to go this far, but Lewis gives him short shrift, saying the whole thing is his fault. Kylie immediately contradicts him, and tells David that none of it is his fault, all he did was stand up for himself, and she is dead proud of him. However, David doesn't look exactly proud of himself as he watches his Gran being driven away.

Monday 16 April

With a heavy heart, I bring you tonight's update. We shall finally hear of the passing of dear Betty Williams.

We open at the end of the Street. There's a new sign on the unit in the viaduct next to the Bistro and workers unloading gear. Nick observes that it looks like a new bar, competition! Eva thinks he should try to buy the place but he reckons it's too late. Nick sees David and Kylie and calls out but David ignores him. Nick was hoping to guilt trip David since Audrey has been at the police station wondering if she's going to be charged. Across the road, Sunita is helping Dev unload the car. Stella and Karl come out of the Kabin and chat too Nick about the new bar's sign. Karl watches Dev and Sunita laugh together over their task. Dev invites Sunita to a nice lunch. They seem happy, much to Karl's chagrin.

In the cafe, the Barlow juniors are having breakfast. Simon asks Roy what today's special is and is not best pleased to hear it's liver and onions. He was looking for an alternative as to where to have his tea, you see. Peter suggests having it at home but that's rubbish according to our erstwhile food critic. He and Roy confer again, with Simon suggesting Roy start with a new special. Carla offers to talk Peter into letting the lad go to his granddad's for tea, basically as a bribe to try to get him to like her. Peter sighs with frustration. At another table, Tommy and Tina are talking about furniture placement in the flat. Tommy comes up with a surprise, he wants to buy the flat! She's delighted!

Rita's been baking. She tells Dennis that Betty's son, Gordon, is going to take her and Emily to see Betty so she's made a carrot cake. Norris brings out a large carton of leftover Easter eggs, grumbling about the overage stock. Leanne comes in just as Norris mentions they'll have to be marked down to half price eventually. Rita lets Leanne have one cheap now assuming it's for Simon. Leanne whispers it is but will have to talk Ken into giving it to him as she's still banned from seeing Simon.

At the police station, Audrey is done with the police. She's got off with a caution and bickers a bit with the sergeant. Lewis is there to collect her. Audrey feels humiliated and is in a bad mood and isn't happy about having to plead guilty to get the caution.

In the salon, Kylie is putting up new photos. Gail comes in and asks David to sort things out with Audrey. David is reluctant and would only do it if Audrey backs down, insisting he's not going to sign the salon over while Lewis is around. Gail points out it's all out of hand and he needs to sort it out. David insists the salon stays in his name. End of.

Tommy wants to take an early dinner to go to the bank. Jason greets them and Tommy tells him about the mortgage and wants to buy the flat. Jason is chuffed but snickers because he's covered the camper with shaving foam.

Audrey comes back to the salon. She turns down the loud music and shouts at David and insults Kylie and threatens to get back what's rightfully hers. She orders David to sign back the salon or else.

Ken is in the pub when Leanne comes in. Ken admits he hates to keep her away from Simon but he's stuck in the middle. Leanne tells Ken that she saw Simon at the playground looking really dejected and sad. She's worked on his emotions and when Leanne presents the Easter egg to him, Ken admits Simon will be at Number 1 after school and she can give it to him then.

In another booth, Emily and Rita chat to Dennis about visiting Betty. They're waiting for Gordon who comes in just as Rita gets up and walks into him. Gordon looks shattered. Rita takes him to the booth to sit down. It's clear he's upset and when Emily asks if something's wrong with Betty, he breaks the sad news that Betty died in her sleep. Gordon speaks softly. He'd been half expecting it for a long time but it's still a shock. He tells them that they had a nice weekend together with lots of laughs. Ken has joined them by now as well. He relates that Betty was reading a childhood favourite book of his, Five Children and It, and she was determined to finish it. She took it to bed with her and when he went to bed himself, he noticed her light was still on so he checked on her. She was there with the book open to the last page, but was gone. He recalls how peaceful she looked and how he sat there until it was light. Ken asks if the undertakers have been. They have and Emily offers to go to the registry office with him to register the death. Tina brings over a tray of drinks, on her, telling them Betty was her mate, too. Rita, with tears on her cheeks, says she will be missed.

Audrey is complaining to Nick in the Bistro about David. She makes a valid point that even if Lewis is out for her money (he objects!) it's still her money to decide, not David's. It's nobody else's business. Nick tells them that Gail had a word with David who might be willing to meet them half way but Audrey won't have any of it. Lewis has an idea and leaves. Gail arrives, looking upset. Audrey starts in on her but Gail finally interrupts her to tell her the news about Betty.

Rita and Dennis come out of the pub. Rita is still shaky. She tells him about her relationship with Betty, the advice, the laughs, the support. Rita sobs, hoping Betty knew how important she was to her friends. Dennis is sure she did and it went both ways. He promises to take care of her.

In the pub, Tina tells Jason about Betty and even he's a bit sad. They chat a bit about Tommy buying the flat when Owen comes in looking for Tommy. Seems the camper van is in the way and he needs it shifting because it's in the way of a delivery. The new boss is going to be coming round.

Sunita has come in for her wages and Stella asks her if she can work later and tells her that Betty was one of the first ones to accept her in the pub. She reckons there will be a lot of people coming in once the news really spreads. Sunita does have something to do but promises to be back later after lunch with Dev. Stella makes a remark about a woman always needing to have her own money in case her fella lets her down, knowing Karl is listening from a booth nearby. She goes into the back, leaving Karl and Sunita to talk. He thought she was quitting but she couldn't and said she'll stay out of his way. He thinks he can handle it if she can. He watches her go.

In the cafe, Norris is looking down, sad about Betty of course. Mary makes a few ill thought remarks as per usual. Norris is upset and feeling that as his older friends pass on, he feels his mortality looming over his shoulder. Carla arrives for a sandwich. When Leanne spots her she charges out, followed by Carla who tries to defend Peter's stance on Simon. She does think Peter's right for the time being though she also thinks once things settle down, Simon should be allowed to see Leanne. Leanne isn't too thrilled with that idea.

Lewis has made a scurrilous sign propped up on the pavement between the salon and the camper-van/salon, with "Amateur" and an arrow pointing to the old salon and "Professional" pointing to the camper van. Kylie growls and hisses a bit and runs back inside to tell David. He pulls her back from property damage saying he's got a plan.

Down the road, Owen and Jason are supervising a breakdown truck in the process of hooking up Tommy's camper van to be hauled away. Tyrone shouts at them and argues with Owen but Tommy comes around the corner just then, saying he's going to be able to get a mortgage. A car drives up, Owen says it's the new gaffer. Tommy and Owen shout at each other and the new owner of the bar gets out of the car. OhmyGod it's Terry Duckworth! Owen promises things are being sorted. Jason doesn't seem to recognize him and Tommy certainly doesn't. He and Terry exchange words and Tommy shoves Terry. The two of them get into a fight with Tommy getting the worst of it. Tyrone comes back around and is stunned. "Terry???!!!" he exclaims. Tommy is surprised Tyrone knows this "goon". Tyrone tells him, "Tommy, this is your dad!".

The episode opens with Tommy picking himself up from the cobbles after being knocked flat by his father. "Are you my Dad?" asks Tommy incredulously. But all Terry cares about is getting Tommy to move his wreck of a camper van which is in the way of the builders. When Fiz and Sally emerge from the factory and catch sight of Terry they get short shrift from him. Terry drives off, leaving Tommy standing bewildered on the street. He has to ask Ty to confirm that it really was his Dad.

Gordon and Emily go into the Kabin. They're in sombre mood having just returned from registering Betty's death. Rita is full of sympathy and tells Gordon how Stella has suggested they all gather in the Rovers to have a drink in Betty's honour. Gordon's concerned about them closing the shop but Rita reassures him that people would far sooner be remembering Betty than buying a newspaper.

In the cafe, Ty and Tommy are discussing Terry's sudden appearance. Tommy is desperate to see the good side of the situation and suggests Terry might have intended to turn up and surprise him and then get to know him. Ty tells him that if that's the case, he'd run for the hills if he was in Tommy's shoes. At that moment Tina comes in and wants to know if what she's heard about Terry turning up is true. She asks if he was looking for Tommy and Ty replies that he was looking for a scrap. "So are you, Tyrone" retorts Tommy who is upset with the way Ty keeps putting his Dad down. He refuses to see what a good-for-nothing low -life his father really is.

Leanne arrives at Ken and Deirdre's for her secret rendezvous with Simon who is thrilled to see her. Ken tells Leanne how he hates lying to Peter and making Simon lie too but he agrees that Simon needs to see her. He goes off to the pub for Betty's drinks and tells Leanne that Peter isn't due back until seven but he'll return by six to be on the safe side.

Rita and Audrey are on the way to the pub and Rita is lamenting the fact that she didn't go to see Betty the day before. As Audrey is in the middle of trying to reassure Rita that she shouldn't be so hard on herself as she couldn't see into the future she's distracted by the sight of a sign outside the salon. It shows an arrow pointing towards Mary's camper van with the word "Professional" and one pointing towards the salon with the word "Amateur". Lewis pops his head out of the van window to explain that it's his handiwork but Rita soon puts a dampener on his boyish enthusiasm when she tells him the news about Betty. Audrey is close to tears with all the upset and says that maybe she should simply call David and suggest they start again but Rita is the voice of reason and tells her that she should put all that aside for one evening and go and have a drink to Betty as planned. The ladies head off for the pub and Lewis goes to move the sign but not before Kylie comes running out of the salon shouting that he's only doing it so that he can then accuse Kylie and David of nicking his sign.

In the pub things are getting busy. Sunita arrives for her shift but there's no sign of Tina. Karl offers to help out but Stella tells him she doesn't want him near the bar. Then Steve asks if he can pull a few pints for old time's sake and Stella happily agrees. Karl doesn't look impressed and tells Sunita that Stella is treating him like the cabin boy on her ship.

Steve serves Ken and, while they're talking about Betty, Steve remembers that there used to be a lovely photo of her behind the bar when he lived in the Rovers.

Over at their usual table, Rita and the gang are also talking about Betty. Emily reveals that, when she and Gordon went to the Register Office, he mentioned that he was thinking of holding the funeral in London. Everyone is totally shocked by this suggestion and, as Rita points out, Cyril is buried near Weatherfield and Betty would certainly have wanted to be laid to rest with him. Rita decides that they'll have to raise the subject with Gordon and the sooner the better.

Back in the cafe, Tommy is still trying to stick up for his Dad while Ty tries to get him to understand how awful he really is. Kevin comes in demanding to know why the garage has been abandoned and the tools have all been left lying out for anyone to take. He can't believe his ears when Tina tells him it's because Terry Duckworth has turned up. "Even more reason to lock up the tools," says Kevin, much to Tommy's annoyance. When he looks like he's about to thump Kevin, Tina persuades Tommy to leave the cafe. Outside Ty tries to tell Tommy he's better off without Terry and to remind him that Geoff and Doreen were like his parents. But Tommy isn't listening and Tina tells Ty that he has a right to sees his Dad. Ty insists he's just trying to protect Tommy but the row escalates and Tommy questions whether Jack and Vera were really the saints which Ty makes them out to have been. Tommy finally pushes Ty over the edge and, just as he's about to hit him, Ty reveals that Terry actually sold Tommy to Geoff and Doreen when he was a baby.

Tommy and Tina are now back in the flat and discussing the latest revelation. Tina tries to reassure Tommy that Jack and Vera were well known for their tall stories but it has set Tommy thinking. He's clearly wondering if it could be true and recalls how Geoff and Doreen never had any money when he was growing up. He reveals that the only time Geoff hit him was when he threatened to go off and find his dad and how he was told that they had sacrificed everything for him and that's why they had nothing. He wishes he'd thanked Geoff while he still had the chance. When Tommy tells Tina that he needs to find out if it's true that his dad sold him she tells him to call Terry, pointing out that his dad won't be around forever.

Sally, Kevin and Fiz walk into the Rovers together. They're also discussing the hot topic of the unwelcome appearance of Terry Duckworth. Sally comments to Sunita that it's unusually busy in the pub and she breaks the news to them that it's because Betty has just died.

Gordon is sitting with Rita and the usual suspects, reminiscing about his mother. He's regretting the fact that she didn't live closer to him and saying how much easier it would have been to see more of her if she'd lived round the corner. They even manage to have a laugh about the abrupt way she would sometimes speak to people. "She once called me an interfering weasel," chuckles Norris as the others exchange glances showing their agreement with Betty's sentiment. Emily then manages to steer the conversation around to the topic of the funeral and suggests to Gordon that Betty would have wanted to be laid to rest with Cyril. He admits that all he really knew about her wishes was that she wanted to be buried rather than cremated and she didn't want people wearing black at her funeral.

At Ken and Deirdre's, Leanne is making Simon a sandwich when Ken comes back to ask if she'd like to pop over to the Rovers for a drink to Betty. She replies that she'll be going over later and then tells Ken she spoke to Simon about Betty. She says he was quite upset but then adds that he's feeling very vulnerable at the moment. Just then they hear the front door open but realise to their horror that it's Peter and Carla coming back early. Leanne just has time to grab her coat and hide in the kitchen. As they're chatting we can see Peter's hand resting right next to Leanne's bag which she's left on the side. Simon picks up on this so asks to go home. He has to turn his whining up a notch when Peter offers to take out the rubbish and heads towards the kitchen. Finally they leave and Leanne emerges from her hiding place.

Out in the street Jason is explaining to Gary why Tommy didn't know Terry was his dad when he turned up earlier. Owen comes out and Gary asks whether they're short-handed on the new job. It would seem they are so Owen tells him to get into the van and they'll talk about it over at the yard. At that moment Tina comes over and asks Owen if he has the number of the man he's working for. "Ask him yourself" says Owen as Terry steps out of the building they're renovating. He's accompanied by a man who we learn is a councilor but who asks Terry to call him on his mobile next time, not the office phone. Quite clearly there's something fishy going on.

Tina attempts to speak to Terry but when he tells her it's not a good time to talk she follows him inside the building. She tries to get Terry to understand that Tommy wants to get to know him but he makes it perfectly clear he wants nothing to do with his son. Just as she's about to walk away, Tina turns back and asks Terry if he sold his son to his grandparents. He tries to laugh it off, gets nasty and then says of course he didn't and growls at her to get out before he calls the police.

In the Rovers Stella has found the photograph of Betty which was tucked away in a cupboard. It gets passed around for everyone to admire. Gordon asks for a copy and he's told he can keep that one and they'll get another one made to hang behind the bar. He says they would run out of wall space if they hung up pictures of all the barmaids who had ever worked there but Rita gently points out that Gordon doesn't realise how important his mum was to them. They talk some more about how special Betty was and then raise their glasses in her memory. Gordon turns to Emily and says that maybe she's right and that she belongs up in Weatherfield and should be buried there and not down in London. He thanks everyone for being there and for sharing his mum's life and they raise their glasses again.

Out in the street, Simon is in a cheerful mood. Carla comments to Peter that he actually made eye contact with her and Peter agrees that he's brighter than he's seen him in ages. He asks Carla if she'll now admit that he was right and that keeping him apart from Leanne has obviously done some good.

Audrey comes out of the pub with Lewis and Rita and notices that the light is still on in the salon. As she goes over, intending to have a chat with David, Kylie emerges, accompanied by a policeman. He asks if she's Audrey Roberts and then serves her with a "first instance harassment warning". Lewis and Rita look shocked as the policeman explains that it means Audrey can't go near "Mr. Platt's business" or to approach David and Kylie. Despite Lewis telling her not to, Audrey signs the form and says she's done fighting. Rita tells Audrey she's going to go and have a drink with her but before leaving she turns back to David and Kylie to give them a piece of her mind. She says that Audrey was about to go and see them to try and sort things out and that that is what you do when a dear friend dies: you try to fix things. David asks which friend and Rita tells him it's Betty. "Ah well, she were ancient, weren't she?" observes Kylie. "Shut up, Kylie," retorts David.

Tina goes back to the flat where Tommy thinks she's been to see Stella. She explains she actually went to see his dad instead. Tommy wants to know if what Tyrone said was true and Tina admits that she thinks it might be. His instant response is that they should pack a rucksack and leave together on the first ferry to France. Tina points out he can't just run away. There's her job to think about for a start, not to mention Betty's funeral. But Tommy doesn't want to listen to common sense and says that if she won't come he'll have to go on his own. He says he can't stay there, not now Terry's around. "I'm sorry Tina, I've got to go, soon as," are his final words on the subject.

Thursday 19 April

Tina and Tommy are chatting about their travel plans when Jason comes in and asks if they're going on holiday. Tommy tells him it's more than a holiday, they're going to take a year out and go travelling. "But you are still buying the flat?" asks Jason. Tommy says he's sorry but there's been a change of plan, and he'll talk about it later. Then he rushes off to work. When he's gone, Tina tells Jason that it's down to Terry turning up out of the blue, Tommy can't get away fast enough.

Gary is leaning on the back of the truck, reading the paper. "Oi you!" Terry's dulcet tones ring out as he comes over and tells Gary to start unloading. "The name's Gary," says Gary, "and I only take orders from my boss." At that moment Owen gets out of the truck cab, and tells him that as far as the boss is concerned, they'll get moving as soon as he gets the cash for the materials. Terry expects Owen to buy the materials and he'll square up with him at the end of the week. Owen insists he needs the cash up front, and wants £500. Just then Tyrone walks over and asks why Terry has come back, adding that Tommy was happy until he turned up. Terry starts slinging insults around, and Fiz comes up and tells Tyrone to come away. The insults get worse, but before it can really kick off Gary intervenes as well, and Fiz leads Tyrone away. Owen repeats his request for cash, and Terry says he'll have to go to the bank. "Fine," says Owen, "we'll be in the cafe."

Tommy meets up with Tyrone and gives him a chocolate bar as a peace offering. "Cheers," says Tyrone. Tommy is mildly surprised, he thought he'd be groveling all day after the way he treated Tyrone yesterday. Tyrone says it was all down to Terry, Tommy has nothing to be sorry for.

In the factory, Hayley, Sean and Fiz are reminiscing about Betty. Sally comes along and wants to know why they've not started work, it's 3 minutes past nine. Sean tells her they're thinking about Betty, the much-loved resident who died recently. Sally admits that it's really sad, but she had a good innings and now they should get to work. Fiz asks what's the hurry, Carla won't be in until dinnertime. Sally says that just because Carla isn't there, it doesn't mean they can slack off. Sean wants to know why Sally is giving them orders, she's just a humble machinist like them. "Not for much longer," says Sally, "there's going to be some big changes round here."

Terry arrives back with the money. As Owen starts to count it, Terry protests that it's all there. "Just as well to check," says Owen, "then there won't be any misunderstandings."

In the pub, Rita, Emily and Stella are also reminiscing about Betty. Just then Gordon, Betty's son comes in. Stella gets up to get him a drink and he sits down at the table. He tells them that there's so much to do, he's been on the phone to the gas, electricity and water companies. Emily says that often these things can be a distraction.

Terry comes in and Stella calls Tina to serve him. As she pulls the pint, she tells him that Tommy won't be around for much longer, they're off travelling round Europe. He knows that Terry sold him and he wants nothing to do with him. Terry then starts loudly insulting Tina, and Rita calls over from where she's sitting. She tells Tina that she and Tommy mustn't have anything to do with Terry, he's rotten to the core.

Gordon says that the next job he has to do is go to Betty's house and sort out her things. Emily, Rita and Stella all offer to go with him and help and he thanks them, saying he'd appreciate it.

Over in the factory, the workers are chatting as they work. Sally comes out, all officious, and says she's going to suggest to Carla that they split some of them up. "What, like at school?" says Hayley. Just then Carla comes in. "What's going on here then?" she asks. Izzy tells her that Sally is pointing out where they're all going wrong with their lives. Carla then suggests they all take an early lunch, and asks Sally to step into the office.

In the pub, Terry is just finishing a phone call to someone, telling them that they'll get their money. He turns to Stella and says that he knows she's not a big fan of what he's doing down the Street, but hopes they can be friends. "We'll see," says Stella. Just then Gary and Jason comes in, and Terry offer to buy them drinks, which they accept. "And whatever you're having love," he says to Tina. "No thanks," says Tina. Terry turns to Jason and Gary and gets chatting. He says he understands that Tommy was going to buy the flat, but now is going round Europe. "That garage must be paying damn good money," he says. "No," says Jason, "it was his granddad, Geoff, he left him the money." Terry raises his eyebrows and smiles. "Good for him," he says as the cogs whirr in his brain!

In the office, Carla is tactfully trying to tell Sally to back off from the workers, Hayley is the supervisor. Sally thinks Hayley is too soft on them. Carla says Sally will be more valuable if she can work on ways to expand the business. Sally already has ideas for nightwear, dressing gowns etc. and rushes off to make coffee so she can tell Carla all her thoughts. "I am SO looking forward to us working together," she tells Carla. "Me too!" says Carla, feigning enthusiasm. When Sally has left the office, Carla sits down and buries her head in her hands.

Terry comes out of the pub and sees Tommy and Tyrone walking down the Street. He rushes over. "How are you son?" he asks. Tommy tells him not to call him son, he gave up that right when he sold him like some puppy he couldn't be bothered looking after. Then he and Tyrone turn and walk away.

Gordon and the ladies have arrived at Betty's house. Gordon says it's weird to come in without his mother being there. Emily puts the kettle on and they all set to work, with Gordon getting a little tearful. Rita tells him there's no crime in missing her. Amongst her things they find her mayoral medal of office inscribed "Elizabeth Turpin, Lady Mayoress 1994-1995".

Terry's bought a new picture frame with a photo of a baby in it. Sitting in his car he takes the photo out of the frame and screws it up. Then opens it out again and tears a corner. Then he puts it in his inside jacket pocket, and smirks.

Sunita is working on her own in the pub and Karl quietly tells her he misses her and she looks 'flamin' sexy!' Sunita looks mildly embarrassed, but pleased. She's pulling pints for Gary, Jason and Owen when the factory workers come in and it gets busy. Karl offers to help her but she tells him she's fine, and she'll call Sean in if it gets too busy.

Tommy and Tina are looking at a book about Italy when there's ring at the door. It's Terry, come to talk. Tommy tries to shut the door but Terry stops him. He says that Tina told him they're going off travelling and he knows that since seeing him again he's handled everything wrong. Tommy tells him he's handled the last 20 years wrong, and Terry says he knows, but he wants the chance to explain. So Tommy lets him in and they go upstairs, where Tina is not pleased to see him, and tells Tommy she wants Terry out - now! Tommy however, wants to hear what his father has to say, and says he'll make a brew.

Back at Betty's, Gordon goes off to take some things to the charity shop, while Rita looks though some letters and papers. She's shocked to find a letter from Annie Walker (an earlier owner of the Rovers for those who don't know) saying that she wanted Betty to have the Rovers when she died. Along with the letter is a copy of Annie's will confirming this. "What does this mean?" asks Stella. Rita thinks it means that Stella doesn't own the Rovers, Gordon does.

In the Rovers, poor Sunita is getting more and more snowed under as it's really busy. Karl offers again to help, but Sunita says she's under strict instructions. She says she tried calling Sean but he's not answering his phone. Owen then starts asking for jacket potatoes, and Karl says it's ridiculous, he could at least sort out the food. Sunita relents, but says he's not to go anywhere near the till.

Terry tells Tommy that his mother had just died, he was grieving and had no idea how to look after a baby. "So you sold him!" snaps Tina.

At Betty's house, Rita, Emily and Stella are pondering the latest development. Rita can't understand why Betty never said anything, but Emily thinks she probably didn't want all the responsibility. Stella points out that she did pay for the place, fair and square, and she has enough money worries going on at the moment. She asks if they'll just keep quiet about it for a day or two to give her enough time to see a solicitor.

Things have quietened down in the Rovers, people are leaving, and Sunita thanks Karl for helping. Just then his phone rings, it's Stella, and Sunita looks very unhappy. As Beth approaches the bar to be served, Sunita says she has to go and get some orange, and disappears out the back. She hovers in the hall while Karl finishes his call, and then flirts with him. He kisses her, as Beth starts calling from the bar. She giggles and says she'd best get back. "To be continued..." says Karl.

In the flat, Terry is apologising to Tommy for lashing out, saying he reminded him of the worst thing he's ever done, but now he's sorry. There's a pause. "Is that it?" asks Tina. Terry says it is. Tommy tells him it makes no difference, he wants him out. As he walks to the door, Terry pulls out the crumpled photo and says it's all he's ever had of Tommy, they sent it to him soon after he left, and he's carried it with him ever since. He'd always wondered what his son would look like grown up. "Now I know, eh?" says Terry. Tommy stares at the photo for a few moments and then hands it back. Terry heads off out of the door, leaving Tommy looking very thoughtful.

Friday 20 April

The first scene is the bar of the Rovers Return. In the backgound we hear Karl, Stella and Leanne discussing arrangements for the day as the camera pans along the bar to a picture of Betty.

Tommy and Tyrone take breakfast in the cafe. Terry comes in, acting very friendly and suggesting he and Tommy have lunch together. Tyrone answers for Tommy and is not very welcoming at all. Roy and Hayley seems to have vanished. Terry complains about the lack of service and goes out. Tommy tells Tyrone that he managed to start the Kombi van.

In fact, he's moved it to outside Tyrone's front door, where Kirsty is disgusted to find she's been parked in. She's got an appointment with the midwife in 20 minutes. Tina offers to help guide her out but Kirsty ungraciously mutters that she can do it. She's sure Tommy's trying to wind her up and won't listen to Tina's protests that he isn't. Across by the salon, Terry watches with interest.

Back in the cafe, Audrey's annoyed at Betty asking for colourful clothing at the funeral. She'd rather wear black. Lewis and Roy both worry about whether or not to wear a tie. Roy says the cafe's going to be closed from midday. Hayley comes in. She's in a grumpy mood, hasn't been able to work out what to wear and thinks she's got a cold coming on.

In the pub, Leanne and Stella talk about the letter from Annie Walker, someone neither of them's ever heard of.

Deirdre's very annoyed at having to sponge something off Ken's jacket - he's still wearing it. Tracy tries to get out of going to funeral, claiming she barely knew Betty. Ken points out Betty was her godmother. But Tracy wants to go and buy a top that's in the last day of the sale. Ken and Deirdre both insist she come to the funeral.

Tina and Tommy discuss the van and Kirsty's reaction to his parking. He says he's changing his mind about going away over the summer.

Audrey arrives at Gail's with Lewis. That doesn't go down very well with Gail but Audrey tells her to wind her neck in, especially today. Audrey's also determined not to let "Bonnie and Clyde" get to her today.

At the site of Terry's new bar, Gary and Jason fill him in on the animosity between Tina and Kirsty.

Emily and Rita talk about the funeral. Mary has agreed to watch the Kabin so Rita and Norris can both go to the funeral, though Emily says Norris has been going on about Betty's paper bill. They talk to Stella about the letter from Annie Walker, telling her they feel obliged to mention it to Gordon. Stella seems a bit taken aback.

Out in the street, Terry wraps a hammer in cloth and attacks the van's bumper and front right headlight with it.

Eileen's hard at work but she feels like a holiday. Sally wanders past and picks up a piece of Eileen's work to inspect it, saying she's seen worse. The machinists ask whether she's just going to criticize what they do but she tells them she's head of strategy. They tease her about having the power to decide what kind of biscuits they have and she snippily tells them she also has the power to hire and fire. Carla heads off out and Michelle tells Sally that Carla's having lunch with one of their regular clients.

In the pub, Ken's reminiscing about Landladies He Has Known. Gordon wonders why his mother never took on the pub and Steve tells him she like to pull pints and then go home. Ken remembers when Betty managed the pub temporarily and thinks she quite enjoyed it, though she didn't get on with Fred Gee or Billy Walker. Deirdre wonders whether Gordon's the rightful owner of the pub but Leanne points out that an offer like Annie's doesn't stay open indefinitely. It's clear Betty turned it down. She thinks it's time they all went outside.

"Bonnie and Clyde" are in the salon. Kylie's quite happy peering through the venetians and sneering at David's relatives assembling outside the pub. He thinks they should go out to show their respect and they have a bit of a disagreement about it. He says he liked Betty and round her that's what you do when someone dies. Kylie agrees that Betty was all right "as far as old biddies go."

As more and more people come out to line the street, Gordon gets quite emotional. "She's coming now," says Emily as the hearse rounds the corner at the viaduct end of the street. As it moves slowly along we see all the watching faces from the viewpoint of someone in the vehicle. This slow view made me cry. The hearse pauses outside the Rovers.

In the bistro, Carla and her client are just about settled their business, in the manner of people who've been dealing with each other for a long time. But then Sally rushes in and seats herself between them, apologising for being late and introducing herself to Neil Trimbly as Carla's business partner. Carla tells her she's got everything under control and suggests it would be really useful if Sally could go back and keep an eye on the factory but Sally ignores her. She tells Mr Trimbly she's been looking at the previous orders and has some ideas. Has he ever thought of going for a different demographic? Has he thought of rebranding. Trimbly's not the most elegant name, is it? As Mr Trimbly takes offence, Carla mutters under her breath, trying to stop Sally.

Tommy and Tyrone discover the damage to the van. Tina arrives and is sure it's down to Kirsty battering her way out of the parking space.

Karl's sweet-talking Sunita as she tries to set out the food for the wake. He kisses her and is surprised when she tells him she can't risk being found out and she thinks they should call it a day. "Let's quit while we're ahead."

Tyrone inspects the damage to the van and argues that Kirsty wouldn't have done it. She arrives back from her midwife appointment (she needs to keep her feet up, she tells Tyrone) and Tommy and Tina accuse her of damaging the van. Tyrone points out there's no damage to Kirsty's car but Tina reckons someone in the police would know how to avoid that. She accuses Kirsty of playing the pregnancy card. Next thing, Tommy and Tyrone are grappling and have to be separated by Terry, who helpfully wanders along. Tyrone shouts at Tommy that the two of them are finished as mates. Terry smirks.

The end of episode one.
More of Betty's send-off in the second.

We open with Tina, Tommy and Terry inside the flat. Terry is demanding Tina make Tommy a cup of tea, as he has had a shock. Tina retorts that he can do it! Terry's excuse is that he doesn't know where anything is. Tina decides the easiest route is to follow orders, and leaves the way for Terry to spout poison into Tommy's ear about how nasty Tyrone is.

Tina interjects that the fault is far more Kirsty's than Tyrone's, but Terry says that's no excuse, as he is siding with her over Tommy. Tommy tries to make excuses for Tyrone, saying that it is because she is carrying his child, but Terry insists that it is no excuse. Tina has to get back to work, so Terry tells her he will finish making the brew. I guess he has suddenly decided he can figure out where everything is. Tina actually thanks him for stepping in and protecting Tommy, little does she know.....

In the Bistro, Sally is still putting her foot into her mouth, and Carla is desperately trying to smooth things over, and brings the meeting to an end as quickly as possible. After the buyer leaves, Sally turns to Carla and says "I think that went well". Carla's response to that is to tell her that by rights she should make her pay for her own meal. Sally is taken aback and asks her what's wrong, that he had seemed taken with some of her ideas. Carla is furious, and tells her that she needs to learn to keep her mouth shut!

The topic of conversation in the Rovers is Betty of course, and Ken remarks that if they had three 92 year olds, they would be back somewhere between Louis 1X and Napoleon. (No, I didn't get it either, because you would have had to have had the 92 year olds consecutively, not all together!) They chuckle and tell him that Betty wouldn't appreciate hearing that. The banter and reminiscences continue with Emily recalling that she had found three aces hidden under the tablecloth one night after they had all been playing cards together. Rita confessed that it had been her who had placed them there all along, and had allowed Emily to think it was Betty for the last thirty years.

Kevin and Sally bump into each other on the street, and Sal asks if he went to the funeral. He tells her he was surprised he didn't see her there, so she told him she had a meeting instead. He then notices the garage is closed, and is not pleased about that at all. He hightails off to the pub to look for his errant partner and worker.

In the flat, Terry is still putting the boot in about Tyrone to Tommy. He is now accusing him of obtaining No. 9 under false pretenses. Tommy protests that he is sure it was all done above board, and that Tyrone bought it from Jack. Terry asks if he ever saw the paperwork, and plants the seed that Jack had been old and senile, and didn't know what he was doing. when he handed it over to Ty. He tells Tommy he is too naive and trusting, as was Jack, and makes out Tyrone is only everyone's best mate on the surface, but is doing the dirty underneath. (Ooh, I just want to slap that Terry upside the head!) Tommy is doing his best to defend Tyrone, but he is no match for Terry, who has an answer for everything, and none of the answers put Tyrone in a good light.

The smokers have retired to the smoking section, i.e. the back yard of the Rovers. They consist of Steve, Karl, Dennis and Lewis, and the only one of these three that I knew smoked was Steve, but I guess for this occasion the others do too. Dennis is nervous that Rita will find him smoking out there, and gets a ribbing from the others for being scared of her before they are even married. He denies fear, but Lewis is certain he is quaking. Steve brags that he was the one who wore the trousers in all five of his marriages, that nobody told him he couldn't smoke, or what time he had to be home. (Ooh Steve, I can see your nose growing from here!). Karl nods wisely, and tells him he is the same, ha ha! Lewis on the other hand remarks that he quite likes being told what to do, that there is no fun in coming home late if there is no curfew.

Back inside, Tina and Tommy are discussing Terry. Tina can't help being suspicious as to why he is now all over Tommy, when he didn't want to know the other day. Tommy tells her he has offered him a job, overseeing the new project he is working on. Tina asks how much it will pay, but Tommy admits they didn't discuss that. He tells her that he is not planning to take the job anyway, as he is happy where he is. Tina figures it's not such a bad thing for him to get to know his father a little more anyway, and has definitely softened towards him now he has saved her boyfriend's good looks from a battering.

The men folk come back in after their show of rebellion against the wishes of their various women out in the smoking shelter. Only problem with that theory is that the various women had no idea where they were, and they were not about to tell them. Saved by the clinking of a glass, Ken stands up, calls everyone to attention and speaks on behalf of everyone there. He makes a very touching speech about how loved Betty was by everyone, and how very much she will be missed. He mentions how much Betty always seemed to enjoy life, how they could learn from her, and most of all, they will never forget her. Looking around the room at the faces who worked with and loved Betty Driver for so many years, you could see it was their friend and colleague they were saying goodbye to, every bit as much as they were bidding farewell to the character.

Ken then hands the floor over to Gordon, who tells them that he found some letters among his mother's things, one of which was only written the previous week, with instructions to be read at her wake. He read as follows:

"To my dearest friends, I wish I could be with you today, but unfortunately I can't. I hope that when you are listening to this, you are all sat in the Rovers with a drink in your hands, and a smile on your face. Some of you might not know, but I was born around the corner at No. 6 Tile Street, so you can see that in 92 years, I didn't get very far. I worked here for longer than many of you care to remember, especially you Ken, and you Emily. They hadn't even put a man on the moon when I started, but it seems like yesterday.

I've never been one for retirement, I've never even really liked holidays if you really want to know the truth, but how many people can you say honestly enjoyed their work? Not many I bet. I've been lucky, but the reason I carried on is I like you all. The landladies and landlords I've worked for like Annie and Bet, Liz and Steve, and many of the regular customers that I got to know so well. Steve McDonald's love life was always hard to keep up with, but I tried. I hope you eventually find happiness Steve. Dennis and Rita, I wish you both luck, who says you shouldn't keep trying. And as for Ken and Deirdre, I hope you finally realise you are both as bad as each other, and you may as well just face the facts, you belong together.

To everybody else who might be listening, I'll miss you.

Well, that's about all from me, I'll sign off now as my pen is running out. But listen, have a drink, don't be glum, and remember, as the old song goes, it's later than you think. All my love, Betty"

By the time Gordon reaches the end, there isn't a dry eye in the room, including Gordon's, and my own are pretty moist too if I'm honest. Steve raises his glass to Betty, and everyone echoes "To Betty", and drinks to her memory. We reach the end of part one with Gordon looking lovingly at Betty's photo on the bar.

After the break we see Audrey & Lewis leaving Betty's wake, and stop dead in their tracks outside the Rovers when they catch sight of the new sign up across the road. "David & Kylie's" right across the top of the shop front of the Salon. You can almost see Audrey's blood pressure explode out of her ears as she grabs her mobile to call her solicitor.

Carla and Sally are having a brew in the factory, and are attempting to clear the air a bit. Carla apologises for being so abrupt earlier, but tells Sally she really didn't need her in that meeting. Sally digs her heels in though, and tells her that they have to treat each other as equals. Carla points out that the arrangement hasn't even been formalized yet, but Sally will not be fobbed off, and tells her that it has been agreed in principal.

Carla takes a big breath and tries to explain to her that she has to know the clients and treat them accordingly, and that her rabbitting on about sexy knickers and racier names for his company was not the way to treat that one. Sally protests that she is just bursting with ideas and that she should let her fly, and Carla says she understands, and she will let her taxi on the runway, but one step at a time. Sally seems pacified with this.

Peter arrives just then, and Carla tells Sally to go home. However, she still has the bit between her teeth and tells Carla she is happy to work late. Carla firmly tells her that she doesn't have to revolutionize the whole company in one week. Sally concedes, but threatens her with more ideas tomorrow. "Can't wait" says Carla weakly.

After she leaves, Peter tells Carla that he has a date for the custody hearing, and he is suddenly very nervous.

Back in the Rovers, the wake is still going on. Norris sidles up to Gordon, and tells him it was a wonderful service, that Betty deserved every minute of it, and that Betty was a wonderful person, and you just know he is up to something. Gordon doesn't know him as well as we do though, and thanks him sincerely. Norris goes on to say that Betty was an avid reader. Gordon looks surprised, but agrees that she liked a good thriller, the gorier the better. "Hmm," says Norris, "Newspapers too". (Oh you know what that little weasel is about to do don't you? He is going to ask him to pay Betty's paper bill ) Gordon hasn't cottoned on to this yet, and is going along with the conversation at face value. He tells Norris that his mother just loved the Weatherfield Gazette and devoured it from cover to cover, and if the paperboy should be late, there was hell to pay. "Did you say pay?" chirps Norris. Gordon patiently explains that he was referring to Betty being angry with the paperboy. Norris tries a different tactic and tells Gordon that Betty was always very prompt on paying her paper bills. "Was she?" says Gordon, "That's very good to know, now please excuse me, I have to thank the vicar." Gordon moves away leaving Norris deflated.

Audrey and Lewis are now in the Bistro, and Audrey is just hanging up from speaking to her solicitor. She apparently has told him that David bullied her into putting the salon into his name, and then changed the locks. Lewis is quite impressed that she can be so devious, but she defends by saying that if they can get dirty, then she will have to, and besides, she has had a drink. Lewis warns her that if she goes down that road, it could get very ugly, but she either stoops to their level like that, or let them win. It is left that the solicitor will issue an injunction in the morning.

Back in the Rovers, Gordon is handing an envelope to Sean, saying he has no idea what it's about, but that it has instructions on it to be opened only after Betty's death. We don't find out what's inside right away, because just then Stella arrives with drinks all round, which are on Betty. Apparently, she had arranged that before she died too. (Blimey, it's a good job Gordon changed his mind about having the funeral in London isn't it?) Gail chuckles that she doesn't think she has ever had a drink off Betty before. Deirdre laughs and tells her "Better late than never."

Sean is reading the contents of his letter, however what he is reading sounds very much like a recipe. Tina comes up and looks over his shoulder asking him what he is reading, and he immediately clutches the letter to his bosom and tells her it is top secret, that Betty has left him her recipe for Hot Pot - shhhhhh!

Rita is on her way home, and she is as drunk as a skunk. She suggests a game of cards with Emily, but I don't think Emily wants one. Mary is pushing Norris to try to get the paper bill paid by Gordon one more time, but this time he is reluctant, and tells her that sometimes the customer just gets away with it.

Tyrone opens the door of No. 9 to Tommy, who asks if he can come in and talk to him. Ty is short with him, but lets him inside anyway. Once inside, Tyrone is obviously still very angry at the way Kirsty was treated by Tommy earlier, and tells him that he wants no more of it. Tommy agrees, but tells him that he didn't come to talk about Kirsty, he came to give his notice, that he is leaving the garage as of right now. Tyrone is taken aback by this, but Tommy goes on to say that they have been very good mates, and he doesn't want to spoil that, so has decided to back off and give them some space. Right on cue, just as Tyrone seems to be regretting losing a mate, Kirsty's voice wafts down the stairs asking if Tyrone has got her hot water bottle yet. Tommy tells him to get back to her, and makes his exit.

Back in the Rovers, Gordon is now speaking to Stella about the letter to Betty from Annie Walker and tells her that it was addressed to his Mother, and whatever the legal implications might be, she had made her decision a long time ago, and as far as he was concerned, that was the end of it. Stella gratefully accepts the letter, and thanks him.

Everyone is leaving now, and Gordon says goodbye to Tina, who sincerely tells him that she had loved his Mum, that she was top. Gordon agrees with her, and looks fondly over at her photo again. (Here I go again with the waterworks!)

Tommy finds Terry in the location next door to the Bistro, and tells him he has made friends again with Tyrone, which doesn't please Terry, but then tells him he has quit the garage, and wants to take him up on the offer of a job. Now this does please Terry, he has his son, or more to the point, his gullible son with an inheritance.

Norris is all alone in the Kabin. He is bringing the paper book up to date by taking out his wallet, paying Betty's paper bill into the till, and you see him write 'Account Closed' against her name. Awwww, he has a heart after all.

Stella and Tina are speculating why Betty didn't take on the job of landlady all those years ago. Tina reckons it's because she was too smart, which affronts Stella a bit, but she goes on to say that there is no way she would want to be down that cellar at 6:30 every morning. She figures Betty managed to stay so cheerful because she didn't have the responsibility of running a pub. They talk a little more about Betty, about how hard it is going to be to take her name off the Rota, and out of Stella's phone, then Tina makes tracks for home.

Stella takes down one of the pictures on the wall, and hangs Betty's up in its place. Then as she switches off the lights and leaves, we hear Betty's voice saying many of her well known phrases, like "Anyone for 'ot Pot?" "You're not too old to get a thick ear lady!" "Hey, I've only got one pair of 'ands you know!" etc. Then the camera pans to her photo on the wall, which has underneath Betty Williams, Landlady, 1984 - 2012.

As the credits roll, that is our dear Betty laid to rest. I will miss her, and funnily enough, I will miss Gordon. It was so nice to bring Bill Kenwright, the original actor back without his on-screen wife, because that would have ruined it, she always hated Betty.

That being said, there were a few things about this episode that really annoyed me. Someone else has probably had a beef about this in an earlier update, but the biggest was the fact that they completely changed history by having that letter from Annie Walker bequeathing the Rovers to Betty. Annie didn't own the Rovers, and it wasn't hers to bequeath. Wouldn't have happened - couldn't have happened.

Secondly that they made our Betty into a thief by stealing glasses from the Rovers. She would never have done that, she would storm out in a huff at the merest hint that she might have been dishonest, she would never have stolen from anybody, and I think they did her character a disservice. If they did it for the humour, it went right over this fan's head!

Last annoyance was the photo of Betty placed on the counter, and later that same day hung on the wall. When it was placed on the counter, there was no wording underneath it. Later on, when it was hung on the wall, the matt had been cut and the wording had been added. Now I know we are talking St. Ella here, but surely even she didn't have time to get it done that quickly! In my opinion, if they had to add wording, it would have been far more fitting to put Betty Williams, Barmaid, 1969 - 2012 to reflect the many years of service in the Rovers, plus of course they should have had it under the picture all along for continuity's sake.

Monday 23 April

Written by Ellen Taylor and Mark Burt Directed by Ian Bevitt

It's morning in the garage and jobs are getting assigned but Tommy has arrived to confirm that he's quit. Tyrone hadn't told Kevin because he thought Tommy might have second thoughts. Tommy insists he's looking to his future. He shakes Kevin's hand and leaves. Kevin asks Ty what job Tommy's got but he doesn't know.

A car comes around the corner. It's Audrey and Lewis. Audrey is nervous and wondering if they're doing the right thing. David is still her family after all. They get out of the car and can hear loud music emanating from the salon. They enter, turn it down and an argument with David ensues. She gives him a letter from her solicitor detailing an interim injunction order which says that David forced Audrey to sign over the salon! The injunction means they can't keep Audrey out nor can they do anything to harm the business.

Terry uncovers the new sign for the club and shows him the flyers advertising it. He hands a box of those to Tommy to distribute around and promises he can help interview some of the new staff later. Tommy broaches the issue of wages but is knocked back, informed that it'll be a profit sharing scheme. Tommy, (dumb as a rock) thinks that all right then. Terry assures his son they'll make a great team.

Peter invites Carla out for a meal since Ken will be minding Simon. Sally brings in an updated stock list which Michelle snatches out of her hand. Carla has an email from Frank's solicitor asking her to meet up. Sally is instantly cheered up, assuming it's about the shares that she plans to buy. She scurries back to the shop floor, followed by a dirty look from Michelle. Outside, Sally tells everyone the deal looks to be happening. Peter offers to go with Carla but she's fine. He leaves and Michelle starts to add her opinion. Carla stops her and though she understands the problem, she doesn't have a lot of choice.

Leanne is getting ready to go out and pick up a few things for Simon. Stella offers a lift and advice, be careful. Leanne says it's all in hand. They go through the bar and say good bye to Karl who teases her, thinking she's going shopping for his birthday present. Sunita asks and is told Karl's birthday is Friday. Stella reveals that he's going to be 49. Karl hints at a bluetooth car stereo which Stella dismisses immediately. They leave Sunita and Karl to commiserate.

Tyrone is getting lunch in the cafe when Tommy comes in with flyers for the club. Roy allows him to leave some (though doesn't look at them first). Tyrone sees, though, and so does Norris and Tyrone realizes Tommy is working for Terry. They argue and Tommy defends himself, pointing out he and his dad are building something from the ground up. Tyrone truthfully counters with "Terry Duckworth doesn't build, he destroys".

Beth ask if anyone is interested in a pint at dinnertime. The girls aren't up for it and Sally reckons it gives the wrong impression and is taken down a peg or two for trying to act like management when it's not happened yet. Izzy defends Sally for having a bit of ambition and Sally lightly jokes that she'll always be the same old Sally. "That's what worries us" cracks Beth as Sean hurries in. He's feeling down and intimidated by having to be responsible for the hotpot recipe and is avoiding Stella. Sean says Betty is a big act to follow and Fiz jokes that Sean can't cook to save his life. Fiz and Beth try to buck him up.

Audrey is scowling over the lengthy cancellation list of her old faithful clients. There's more bickering and Audrey, who doesn't look well at all, tries to get them all to let it go. She explains that she and Maria will handle the existing clients and David can bring in his own new ones. A client comes in and Maria follows her to a chair.

Norris is griping about the club in the pub. Karl doesn't see the problem and neither do Sean and Beth when they come in. Tommy and Terry arrive and overhear some of the comments. Terry offers free VIP memberships to friends and neighbours. Norris grumbles. A woman comes in asking for directions and Terry introduces himself to her, Cherry, who's come for an audition. She's brought her own music, turns it on and starts strutting around the pub, winding a scarf around Norris and undulating her bits against him. Stella comes in just then and is horrified. She turns off the music and asks what's going on. Tommy is also a bit confused but it's all clear once Terry admits it's not just a late night venue, it's a lap dancing club! Jaws drop all around the pub. (I suppose a seedy back street hole in the wall under a viaduct is appropriate!)

After the break, Stella throws Cherry out. Terry defends himself, it's a bar with dancers! Many of the punters have a very negative reaction to something like that opening in their neighbourhood. Karl and Beth don't seem to be bothered. Tommy does seem a bit put off but sticks to the game plan even when Stella points out it's exploiting women. Terry and Tommy take off and Stella gets ready to have a few words with Sean. Beth, who nominally has come to support him, leaves him to it.

In the salon, David is waiting on the phone. When Maria asks if he's really going to let it go to court, he points out that Audrey gave him the salon, something he didn't ask for. He gets through to the vendor and tries to cancel the fancy massage chair but Kylie takes the phone out of his hand and says to bring it anyway. She hangs up and announces there's no surrender. Yeah. right. David half heartedly agrees.

In the Bistro, Audrey and Lewis are having lunch complete with a large glass of wine. Nick has rung the council about the lap dancing club. Gail thinks Audrey and David should be talking rather than taking legal action. Nick reckons Kylie is pushing all David's buttons. Gail and Lewis bicker about David while Audrey rubs her neck and looks very stressed.

Norris has brought the news about the club into the Kabin. Scandal! He says there was one in the pub earlier dancing. "She could have had someone's eye out with the bust on her!" (and nearly did!) Norris has organized a meeting in the Rovers later to sort out a protest committee.

In the pub Stella shows Sean the last hotpot from the freezer. She wants to know where the new batch is. Sean says there's technical problems because technically he's not a good cook. Stella asks for the recipe but Sean refuses to breech the confidentiality. She gives him an ultimatum, hotpot by the end of the day or it's the high road. (I don't think that's a legal reason for sacking someone).

In the factory, Carla has arrived back from the meeting and asks Sally into the office. How to tell her? Carla gently says that Frank left her all his shares so she doesn't need Sally's input after all. Seems he never changed his will back after they broke up. Michelle smirks from the corner. Sally is deeply disappointed and trying to hold it together. Carla is very gracious about it and tries to assure Sally that she's still a valued member of the team. Sally makes a few general comments and goes outside quietly, leaving Michelle to do a happy dance though Carla hushes her. Outside the girls see Sally's not bouncing around and she's aware they're watching her.

In the pub the organizing committee is starting to gather members. Even Tyrone says he's in when Kirsty reminds him that Tommy was vile to her.

A fancy leather chair is being delivered to the Salon and Kylie expounds it's virtues. Across the road, Leanne knocks on the front door of Number 1. Swing back to the delivery truck and Audrey and Lewis have returned from the Bistro and another argument ensues. Audrey is not having that chair in *her* salon...more hollering and carrying on. The delivery guy closes up the van and doesn't want to get involved. Back across the road, Ken finally opens to door to Leanne, apologizing as he'd been upstairs and didn't hear her when she had knocked on the back door. Simon runs outside for a hug but unfortunately they're seen by Peter!

Peter stalks across the street and pounds on the door, demanding to be let in. Leanne says there's no point hiding, they're busted. Ken lets Peter in. Peter tries to drag Simon out. Of course he doesn't want to go but is no match for Peter who forbids both Leanne and his father from seeing Simon.

Michelle and Carla talk about the good news. Carla can't get over having a bit of good luck for a change. She thinks it's a new beginning and she's going to do great things with the factory!

Everyone is squabbling in the salon. Gail arrives to add to the mix. Insults, shouting, Audrey begging people to stop hollering. She's off to one side and clearly not well and after things start to get physical between Lewis and David, she collapses, her arms folded up over her chest. David immediately calls an ambulance with a suspected heart attack.

Written by Julie Jones and directed by Ian Bevitt

The ambulance has arrived and they are ministering to Audrey. She's conscious but clearly in pain. Gail asks David to ring Nick and tell him what's happened.

Sally and Kevin are walking companionably down the street together. Kevin suggests he could go round and spend the evening with her over a take-away and a glass of wine while Sally puts her feet up. "Go on then, why not?" she responds. At that moment they see Audrey being carried out of the salon on a stretcher.

David is asking whether Audrey will be alright but Gail just tells him to get out of the way. Nick rushes over to find out what's happened and gets told Audrey's had a heart attack. David can't believe it when Lewis goes with Gail and Audrey in the ambulance and he's not allowed a look in but, as Nick points out, he's the last person their Gran wants to see. He tells David and Kylie that it's all their fault then refuses to let David get in the car with him when he sets off to follow the ambulance to the hospital. The only person who doesn't look too bothered is Kylie who says that Audrey will be fine because she's as tough as old boots.

Peter is standing outside Simon's bedroom door trying to convince him to come out when he thinks he hears Carla coming up the stairs. However, it's Leanne and Peter tells her to get out. She tells him that she's only come to find out if Simon's O.K. and, on hearing her voice, he comes rushing out of the bedroom, flings his arms around her and asks if she's come to get him. She tells him that she's sorry but she hasn't and he runs to the sofa, sobbing his heart out. Peter and Leanne start shouting at each other and Peter tells Leanne it's all her fault because she keeps winding up Simon. She goes over to Simon to comfort him and tell him that she'll see him really soon before giving Peter a look of despair and leaving. When she's gone Peter tries to take over but Simon pushes him away and tells Peter he wants him to get back with Leanne. Peter explains that it isn't possible. Simon says he's been told by Ken that Peter has fallen out of love with Leanne and then shouts at his Dad that he's fallen out of love with him, too. Peter tries to tell Simon that one day he'll realise Peter tried to do his best for him and with no one else there to comfort him, Simon falls sobbing into his father's arms.

Tina and Tommy are in the cafe when Norris comes in on the war path. Tina doesn't know what Norris is on about when he refers to Tommy as being the son of Hugh Heffner so Tommy has to explain to Tina that he was going to tell her about his Dad's plans to have a few dancing girls in his club. "Dancing girls, my eye," retorts Norris. "They're strippers, pure and simple." Tina is not impressed by this news and tells Tommy that it's exploitation. Norris informs Roy that there's going to be a meeting in the Rovers about it that evening but Roy is unable to go on account of the fact that it clashes with the quarterly meeting of the Weatherfield Bat Fanciers.

Over at Sally's, Kevin is pouring out two glasses of wine. Sally confesses she was expecting to be on the Champers and Kevin tells her how sorry he is that it didn't work out for her, buying into the factory, and says that he thinks that it's Carla's loss.

Back at Peter's Carla arrives home. She's in the mood for celebrating but Peter tells her to keep her voice down because Simon's in bed having cried himself to sleep. He tells her how his Dad's been letting Leanne see Simon but Carla doesn't seem that surprised and says she could see it coming a mile off. Peter is really annoyed and sees it as a lack of support. Carla says she thinks Simon needs to spend time with the people he loves but Peter accuses her of siding with Leanne and Ken. He starts getting really nasty and accuses Carla of disliking Simon. She tells him how unfair he's being and how hard she's been trying but Peter's on a roll. He looks her in the eye and says that she doesn't love Simon. Carla can't tell him that she does but she says she loves Peter and she really wants to love Simon. She tries to get Peter to see that Simon has been better over the past few days since he's been seeing Leanne but Peter turns it back in her face, accusing Carla of only wanting to palm Simon off on her.

In the hospital, Audrey is asleep in bed, wired up to a selection of machinery. In a rather obvious statement, Gail observes that she looks terrible. The doctor comes out to tell Lewis, Gail and Nick that Audrey has had a heart attack but she's stable. She describes the medical treatment and explains that the next 48 hours are critical.

Back at home David is on the phone trying to get news of his gran but it seems that nobody wants to take his calls. Kylie comes in with Max and tells David that everyone will have their phones switched off. Once Max is out of earshot David tells Kylie it's all their fault that Audrey's had a heart attack. Kylie's view is that Audrey was just as bad as they were but David doesn't agree. He tells Kylie he doesn't care about the salon. He's genuinely worried that his gran might die and, if she does, he says it will be as if he murdered her and he'll never forgive himself. Which is quite a character change considering he once tried to kill his own mother by pushing her down the stairs.

In the Rovers Emily is telling Kirsty and Tyrone about a petition she'd drawn up to try and stop Terry's lap dancing club. Kirsty is skeptical that it will make any difference as she's sure there's something dodgy going on with the councilor so Emily tries to get Karl to sign it. He's also not keen but in his case it's because he's in favour of the club but Stella soon puts him straight - if he won't sign it she'll do it for him. Emily sees a couple more potential signatures when Norris and Rita arrive but Norris is as unconvinced as Kirsty. He says they need to do something which will make people stop and take notice. Kirsty agrees and says they need to take direct action and start tonight. Stella is right behind their plans but Karl wants to know who will be running the Rovers while she's out fighting the cause. "Not you, that's for sure," she tells him.

Over at Eileen's, Sean is still struggling to perfect Betty's hotpot recipe. It doesn't taste right but Sean can't work out where he's going wrong. Marcus and Eileen offer to help but he's not letting anyone clap eyes on the secret recipe which has been entrusted into his care. He could live to regret this decision after he pins the only copy onto the cooker hood and it falls into the saucepan which is bubbling away on the stove.

At Peter's flat he and Carla are busy apologising to each other after their latest row over Simon. He says he can be such a prat at times and she says no he's not, even though any idiot with half a brain cell would agree with him. Carla says perhaps they should have tried harder to stay away from each other but Peter tells her not to say that as he believes their relationship is the only thing which makes any sense. Then Carla finally gets to tell him her good news that Frank has left his shares to her and the factory belongs to Carla. When Carla tells Peter that she's sure she'll manage to win Simon round in the end he tells her that there isn't a man on earth who could resist her.

David arrives at the hospital, desperate to see his gran but he's waylaid by Nick in the corridor who tells him that Audrey hasn't come round yet and all they can do is wait.

At Eileen's, Sean and Marcus are trying to rescue the hotpot recipe with the aid of a hairdryer. Unable to get into the kitchen to cook her tea, Eileen has had to resort of eating fish and chips. Sean is heartbroken because Betty entrusted the recipe to him and now they can only read half the ingredients.

Back at the hospital, Gail and Lewis are keeping a vigil at Audrey's bedside. Lewis reassures Gail that as soon as the effects of the morphine wear off she'll come round and his tender words make Gail realise that he does genuinely care about her after all. Just as Lewis is telling Gail that Audrey is a wonderful woman she starts to speak and says she could get used to hearing this. She comes round slowly then tells them that she thought it was the end. As Lewis takes her hand she says she'll be fine as long as she has him by her side and Gail looks at them, finally seeing their relationship for what it really is.

Terry arrives back at Tommy and Tina's, heads straight for the fridge and helps himself to a beer. Tina has a go at him about the night club, but Terry defends it by saying it will bring employment to the area in tough times. "Employment with no knickers on," says Tina. But Terry's not the slightest bit concerned about the views of the local residents. However, the smug expression is soon wiped off his face when Owen arrives to tell him they have a bit of a problem. When Terry asks what it is, Owen tells him he'd best come and see for himself.

At Sally's she's just come off the phone from talking to Rosie. Kevin joins her on the sofa and she tells him that Rosie didn't win the reality television show so she and the girls have decided to stay in London and get a flat together. She's feeling very down and says to Kevin that soon Sophie will leave home as well so he tries to cheer her up by telling her that at least he and Jack will still be around. Sally reflects on all the ups and downs they've gone through together over the years and Kevin says that he's been the cause of the worst time and that what he did is the biggest regret of his life. He tells Sally that he was so stupid and that if he'd only stepped back and looked at how lucky he was and what he had he would never have done it. Sally listens to all of this and then leans forward and kisses him.

Over at the building site for the lap dancing club, Kirsty, Tyrone, Emily and Rita are snuggled up in deck chairs ready for an all night sit-in. Rather conveniently, Norris claims that he can't stay as he has to do the early morning shift with the papers. At that moment there's a banging on the door. Terry has turned up and he wants to know what's going on. He sarcastically asks if it's a meeting of the knitting circle but he hasn't reckoned on the strength of feeling amongst Emily and her gang. When Terry tells Owen to go and get a chain saw Emily shouts through the door that if he lays a finger on them they'll sue and Norris adds that they've organised an around the clock sit in and that they have a rota and everything. Terry takes Tommy to one side and tells him they have to get this mess sorted out pronto. If they don't there won't be a night club. Delays cost money and he's already deeply in debt.

Back at the hospital Gail is apologising to her Mum about everything that's happened. At that moment David comes bursting through the door. "Come to see if I've croaked, yet?" asks Audrey but David looks really upset and tells her that's not true. He says he doesn't want the salon and nothing means more to him than his gran getting better. But Audrey isn't having any of it and refuses to listen, despite David's desperate pleas.

"Get out of my sight. Go away, David. Go away," she tells him as the titles roll.

Thursday 26 April

Baby Jack is howling when Sophie comes downstairs. Kevin tells her that he and the baby stayed over - in Rosie's room. Sophie takes the baby and says she'll take over now.

David is sitting staring glumly into space. Gail is off to the hospital and asks him if there's anything he'd like her to say to Audrey on his behalf. David can't see any point, she won't listen. Kylie can't see what all the fuss is about. Audrey's an old woman and old women have heart attacks, she can't see why everyone is blaming David. "A heart attack brought on by stress," says Gail, suddenly all 'holier-than-thou' as if she never had anything to do with the aforementioned stress, and goes on to add that this stress was brought on by all the arguing over the business. Kylie says she thought Gail was on their side. "You were wrong," snaps Gail. David eventually tells his mother to tell Audrey that he's sorry and he hopes she's ok. Kylie tells her to tell Audrey the second bit but not the first, from her. When Gail's gone, David starts wondering whether to change the sign back, but Kylie thinks that will confuse the customers. David just wants to show his gran that he's sorry.

Sally and Kevin are enjoying a cosy breakfast and discussing Terry and his new lap dancing club. Kevin can't understand why Terry would want to open one round there. As Sally gets up from the table, Kevin tells her he'll clear the plates. "Thanks, love," smiles Sally warmly, and then realises what she's said. "Er....thanks."

Over at Eileen's, Sean is getting stressed. He's trying to make a batch of Betty's hotpot from the old recipe, but it isn't tasting quite right. Something's missing and he doesn't know what. Marcus is making sandwiches for those who've camped out in Terry's proposed club. Eileen asks if he's coming to work, but he tells her to say he's got a headache and he'll be in later. She tells him to make his own excuses.

Eileen steps out through her front door as Beth is coming along. They look across the Street and see Sally come out of her door, giving Kevin a quick goodbye kiss on the doorstep. "Back in the old routine Sal?" shouts Beth. Eileen wonders what's going on over there, Beth thinks it's obvious.

Gail has gone to visit Audrey. With Lewis at the bedside, she's sitting up and tells Gail that she's been given instructions about diet and exercise. Lewis goes off to get coffee and when he's gone Audrey tells Gail that he's been wonderful. She knows Gail still has doubts about him, but she shouldn't have. Gail tells her that David is very sorry and hopes she's feeling better. Audrey says she's glad to hear it but can't forget what David did. Gail thinks Kylie might have had a lot to do with it, and Audrey admits that she brings out the worst in him, but there must have been something there already for her to bring it out.

Terry is fuming about the sit-in and, accompanied by Owen and Tommy, marches up to the door of the future club and hammers on it. Emily, Sean and Tyrone come to the glass window, and Terry shouts at them. He says he could sue them and it's all going to get very expensive. Tyrone shouts that he's glad Terry's dad is not there to see what his son is doing. Emily reminds Owen that he has daughters and a grandson, she's surprised at his involvement. He replies that he's just a builder, it's bricks and mortar to him, nothing else. A whole lot more shouts and insults are exchanged until Terry gives them one hour, then he's calling the police. When he's gone, Emily asks Tyrone if an hour is long enough. He says he's not sure, and pulls out his phone.

David is in the salon telling Maria and Kylie his gran is doing ok and should be released from hospital soon. He thinks they should change the sign back and he asks Maria if she can think of anything else he can do that would help. Kylie butts in and reminds him that the salon is still his, and he should be telling Maria what to do. Maria says if he tries it she'll be out the door. "Off you go then," says Kylie. David tries to calm the situation down and tells Kylie he's not bothered about who is right and who's wrong, he just doesn't want any more of it. He asks Maria to take care of the appointment book while he arranges to change the sign. Kylie is disgusted that all this is going on just because Audrey has had a heart attack.

In the pub, Stella is talking to Eva and Tina about the lap dancing club. She doesn't want it on her doorstep, but then apologises to Tina saying she knows her boyfriend is involved. Tina says that doesn't mean she's in favour, and anyway, she doesn't think Tommy is all that keen, he's just going along with it because Terry is his dad. Just then Sean arrives with a big pan of hot-pot. He admits to Stella that he had a bit of trouble with the recipe and doesn't know if it'll be as nice as Betty's, it's as close as he could get. Then, with a wan smile, he rushes off to work.

Gail and Nick are visiting Audrey. They've been told that Audrey was treated in time and her heart has suffered little residual damage, she won't need an operation and she can go home in a few days. However, she has to take the drugs she's been given and must rest for at least 4 weeks. Lewis says he's going to make sure she does.

The hour is up, and Terry and co. go back to the club premises. While they're talking to the protesters through the glass, a police car draws up and out gets Kirsty. Tommy tells Terry that it's no good, she's Tyrone's fiance. "No," says Kirsty, "it's PC Soames to you." Then she asks Terry what the problem is. He tells her this is his property and he wants them out. Norris calls out that they've been threatened with violence, so Kirsty tells Terry that if he continues to behave in a threatening fashion she will have to arrest him. Owen decides this whole thing is a farce, and leaves, followed by Tommy, while Terry rants that he's going to get some proper coppers. Kirsty says they'll tell him the same as her. "I'll be back!" mutters Terry as he walks off.

Sally sees Kevin outside the garage. "Would you like to come round tonight?" she asks. He looks pleased and says he'd love to.

Sean is on his way to the pub with Beth and Eileen. He's worried about the hot-pot, he doesn't think it was very good. However, when they get into the Rovers, Stella tells him that the hot-pot was excellent, it went down very well and she could have sold twice as much. She tells him that he'll either have to share the recipe with them or make a new batch every day! Sean is puzzled. "It must have better than what you thought," says Beth. "It wasn't though," says Sean, frowning.

Rita is asking David and Kylie about Audrey, and whether she's up to having visitors. She shocked when David says he doesn't know, so David hastily says they're going in later.

Over at the bar, Terry, Owen and Tommy are discussing their situation. Terry wonders if they can get to the back of the club premises via the backyard of the Bistro. He thinks they can go in there at night and scare all the protesters, they'll be fighting to get out. Owen says he's not into scaring old ladies. "You're with me though, yeah?" Terry asks Tommy. Tommy nods, but doesn't look too sure.

Sean has a quiet word with Tina who admits to him that she tried the hot-pot and it was horrible. She tells him she then added Betty's secret ingredient - a bottle of stout!

Maria is visiting Audrey. She tells her that she's told the customers that Audrey is just having a few days off and she'll be back soon. She also adds that David has had the sign above the salon replaced to what it was. Lewis thinks that's really good, but Audrey says that all of sudden it doesn't seem that important.

Kirsty goes back to the club and tells Tyrone that she hopes Terry doesn't take proper legal advice, because she doesn't think he would have a leg to stand on. He says they're just trying to get people's attention, that's all. She says she can't keep riding to the rescue, and he hopes that if enough people are made aware, she won't have to.

Rita is visiting Audrey, who confesses that she feels like she's had a warning. She may not have many years left. Rita tells her to make the most of what she's got.

David and Kylie approach Audrey's room, but are fielded off by Lewis who tells them that Rita is with her at the moment and she's not allowed any more visitors - that's it for the day. He says he'll pass on their good wishes. Kylie is outraged and tells David to see the game that Audrey is playing, trying to make him feel guilty so he hands the salon back. He tells her to leave it out, he's fed up with her going on all the time. She snaps that he won't hear one more word from her, and storms out.

Kevin arrives at Sally's and bring baby Jack with him. Sophie is delighted to have him but Sally, although she says she's pleased to see him, doesn't really look so sure.

Accompanied by Tommy, Terry goes into the Bistro. He tells Eva he wants to see if there's a way into the club through the back. She tells him there isn't. He wants to see for himself and isn't happy when she bars the way. He starts threatening her when Nick comes along and demands to know what's going on. He tells Terry that even if there was a way through the back, he wouldn't let Terry use it, because he's planning on opening a lap dancing club right next to his restaurant. Terry says he was going to give Nick free tickets. "Now you have insulted me," says Nick, "out!" When Terry's gone, Nick tells Eva that if that 'scummy club' is opened, no-one will come near them, they'll be finished.

Over their meal, Sally asks Kevin if he thinks she's being a tease, asking him to stay over and expecting him to sleep in another room. He says he would have insisted in sleeping in another room. She smiles flirtatiously at him and says she doesn't know what will happen tonight then, because she's planning on asking him to stay over again. She puts her hand over his on the table.

Tea is ready and David calls Kylie downstairs. She comes down, but heads for the front door. She tells him he doesn't want her advice or support, so she's going. She's fed up with being told that everything is her fault. "Well most of it is," says Gail. Kylie asks David if he heard that and if he's going to stand up for her. He says nothing. "Thought so," says Kylie and goes off out the door.

Friday 27 April

Here we are with another Friday's first episode and I have bad news - Sally is happy. Yes, she's making a fry-up and smiling. Kevin's happy, too, and Sophie wants to know what's going on. The only person not happy is baby Jack, who is crying.

David's getting Max ready for school and Max wants to know where his mummy is. David makes excuses but once Max is out of the room Gail tells David he'll have to tell Max the truth eventually. David says Kylie will be back by tea-time. He's going to work. The least he can do is make sure Audrey still has a business to come back to.

In the pub, Eva's worrying over what to wear. Karl comes in and is almost ignored by Eva and Stella. It turns out Stella has remembered his birthday but all he's getting is a card and some sarcasm. Eva says she'll treat them both to a slap-up meal at the bistro but not tonight because they're fully booked.

Out in the street, Terry's on the phone demanding that someone come to the site. Tyrone glares at Terry and Tommy as they pass the garage. When he goes into the garage, Kevin is sarcastic (yes, sarcasm is tonight's theme) about him taking time off from the protest to come to work. Sally, still happy (oh no!) bounces over to deliver cakes and pastries just as Kevin gets a call from baby Jack's childminder. She's ill and someone will have to collect Jack. Sally offers to do it since she's got the day off. She gives Kevin a quick kiss as she leaves and now it's Tyrone's turn to be sarcastic. Kevin's fallen on his feet and has got his own way again, Tyrone thinks.

In the salon, it's Maria's being sarcastic as David arrives late and Kylie's nowhere to be seen. David should be thinking of Audrey. "Remember her?" Maria asks.

Gail's outside her house when Fay and Anna come out of theirs, with Anna upset because Fay's scuffed her new shoes.

Also outside, Sunita greets Karl cheerfully. She's remembered it's his birthday and she wants to know why he's so glum. He tells her everyone at home is ignoring his birthday this year - part of his ongoing punishment.

Sally's got Jack in his stroller and meets Anna and Fay at the bus stop. I can't help feeling the timeline was out of whack in this episode. Sally's cooked a full breakfast, been to the cafe to collect sweet treats, delivered them to the garage and has been to the childminder to fetch Jack and come back and Fay's still waiting for the school bus. And Eva works in a business that is open until late. What's she doing getting ready for work so early? Anyway, Anna coos over Jack and tells Sally she must enjoy the thought of being a mum to Jack and doing all the childrearing again. Sally looks very thoughtful.

In the Kabin, a furious Terry tells Rita and Kevin that the "old biddy at the cafe" refused to serve him. Kevin's a bit sympathetic and Terry reckons it's because Kevin appreciates the artistic nature of the performances which will be staged in the club. Kevin says he doesn't think Sally would agree with him and so Rita and Terry discover that Kevin and Sally are back together. Terry's still trying to work out how to get the protestors out of the building site and asks Rita if she sells teargas. No, she doesn't. "And you know what? You're barred from here and all." She snatches the Gazette from his hands. "Get out."

In the Occupy Lapdance protest camp, Anna and Roy arrive with hot drinks for Norris and Mary. It's cold and Mary suggests they sing to keep their spirits up. Norris objects to We Shall Overcome and We Shall Not Be Moved. Anna says they need something with a bit of a tune. Mary launches into Onward Christian Soldiers but Norris objects to anything religious. Mary wonders what they can sing that's not chanty, not religious and that they all know.

Outside, Owen's arrived and he and Terry argue because Owen can't wait forever. Terry wants to smoke out the protest. Tommy hushes them. He can hear singing. The three of them press their faces up against the window in the door. There follows a moment so wonderful that I think you should all go to Youtube.com and search for "Coronation Street Bohemian Rhapsody" immediately! Mary, Anna, Norris and Roy perform Queen's hit, re-enacting the staging and lighting of the original video! The main difference is Roy doing his "Galileo" in a very Roy-ish resigned sigh, rather than singing. Totally, totally wonderful and I still smile when I remember it!

Tommy thinks it sounds pretty good but Terry's not impressed. He's calling councilor Peake!

Sally's in the cafe with baby Jack and meets Fiz. Baby Hope has just had a vaccination and Fiz says she was more upset than Hope. She has a different view of motherhood and says Sally won't want to go back to the mess, the noise and the nappies.

As Owen drives away, we see Kylie heading for the bistro in the company of two young men. Eva tells her David is worried sick but Kylie doesn't care. She's going to the bistro to have a good time. One of the young men has his wealthy dad's credit card, so Eva needn't worry about them being able to pay.

Carla's now met Sally in the cafe. She hopes there are no hard feelings and she says she still respects Sally as a businesswoman and thinks Sally will be in business on her own before too long. Sally asks how she's getting on with Simon and Carla frankly admits she isn't. But eventually Simon will come round and then she'll be a mum - something she's actually looking forward to. Carla tells Sally that she'll know where to come if she ever needs parenting advice.

In the bistro, Kylie and the blokes are noisily downing shots. Eva tries to get them to go but they refuse and Kylie gets aggressive. Nick telephones for reinforcements.

Sylvia's started a list of people banned from the cafe. So far, only Terry's name is on it. Gail comes in for a sticky bun and asks after Fay. She tells Anna she couldn't help overhearing the earlier discussion between Fay and Anna. Anna is very short with her and slams her purchase down on the counter. Once Gail's gone, Roy asks Anna why she didn't treat the customer with politeness and respect. Anna says Gail was sticking her nose in. She tells Roy how hard it is struggling to make ends meet when all you want to do is spoil your daughter rotten.

Karl's on the switch in the taxi office. Stella comes in singing Happy Birthday. She's got him a present after all. It's a 2.99 pounds car-wash kit. He's lucky to get anything at all, she says. Karl sarcastically tells her to rewrap it and give it to him again at Christmas. Stella tells him he needs a reality check. "Because of you we can't afford anything and we'll be paying off your debts for years, so get used to it!"

Baby Jack is crying and calling for Daddy.

Kylie's dancing on the table. David (the reinforcements) arrives and orders her down, asking if she wants Max to see her like that and reminding her she's got responsibilities. Kylie tells him she stood up for him and all he did was throw it back in her face, so she doesn't have to do anything he says. David turns the music off and reminds her she's a mother and a married woman. Kylie says she thought being married meant she and David would stand side by side. But David says the situation with Audrey wouldn't have happened if Kylie hadn't pushed him. "If not for you, none of this would have happened." Wallop! Kylie socks him one and then Nick has to hold David back. Kylie warns David to stay away from her. She turns to leave with the two blokes, stopping them from paying and snapping that David can pay.

In the Kabin, Rita asks Sally about being back with Kevin. Sally's face crumples into tears. "I'm a horrible person," she sobs. "I've just made a terrible, terrible mistake."

The end.

Directed by: Ian Bevitt

Auntie Rita has taken a sobbing Sally into the back room for a brew, which cures all ailments as you know. Rita presses her to tell her what the problem is. Sally unburdens by telling Rita that while she loves Kevin, and wants to spend the rest of her life with him, the problem is Jack. She hates herself for feeling this way towards an innocent little boy, but every time she looks at him, she sees Molly, and Kevin with Molly, and all the pain of that union comes flooding back.

As an aside, while little Jack is indeed very cute, he has a bit of an unnerving way of looking at people out of the corner of his eye that makes him look a bit akin to the spawn of the devil. But I am sure he is a very nice lad despite that.

Sally continues that she knows that if she continues on with Kevin, it will mean she will be bringing Jack up, and will be his mother, and she is not sure she can do that. Rita tries to reassure her that it is early days yet, that she may feel differently as time passes. However, Sally tells her about the conversation she had with Fiz, that she recognised the love Fiz feels for Hope as being the same she felt for the girls when they were little, but she really doesn't think she can ever feel that way about Jack.

Rita tries to assure her that she has always been a great mother, and that she will be again if she just gives it time. But Sally protests that she can't stop the horrible thoughts that go through her head every time she picks him up, and how long should she wait for those to disappear? Will it take a week? A month? A year? She tells Rita that she can't live like that, and she can't be the mother he needs or deserves. She feels she has to make the decision not to take Kevin back because of it, even though her heart is breaking.

David arrives home and Gail questions him about Kylie. He fills her in on the row they had in the Bistro, and the fact that she has stormed off. Gail asks if she will be coming back, and what about Max? David is sure she will come back because of Max, because he knows she loves him. Gail is not convinced about that, and rightly points out to David that she has both left him and sold him before.

She can see how upset David is, and sympathizes with him. He tells her that he didn't mean any of this to happen, it all just got out of hand. He tries to justify it by blaming Lewis, saying he was just trying to protect his Gran. Gail points out that Kylie made it much worse by egging him on, but David tells her he is every bit as much to blame as she is.

Gail asks what his plans are now, but he really doesn't know what to do. So Gail suggests he thinks about whether or not Kylie is worth all this trouble.

Rita is still comforting Sally, who is telling Reet that she feels that Jack can read her mind - (Yes! That must be what he is doing when he looks at people sideways!), she thinks because of this he isn't comfortable with her, and it is the reason she couldn't calm him down earlier when he was crying in her living room.

Rita urges her to talk to Kevin about it, but Sally wants to know how she can begin to tell him that she can't stand to be in the same room as his son. Rita assures her they will work it out, they have worked their way through big problems before. Sally agrees to talk to Kevin, and Rita hugs her, and tells her she will always be there for her, should she need her.

Sunita has arrived at the Streetcars office with a big interesting looking gift-wrapped parcel for Karl. It's a car stereo, and she tells him it is Bluetooth, so he can plug in his MP3 player if he wants. Karl is thrilled and gives her a long lingering kiss in thanks. They are interrupted by Steve calling on the phone, so Sunita takes the cue to get back to the Rovers.

Kevin comes home and Sally is all fired up to speak to him about the way she is feeling towards Jack, however, he cuts her words off by asking her if she can take care of him a bit longer as he has a rush job on. She looks crestfallen, but tells him she will.

Kirsty has shown up in the future lap dancing emporium to feed the rebels with toasties. Just then their meal is interrupted by a banging on the door, and the police announce their arrival. Kirsty opts to be the one to speak to them, and after satisfying herself that they are really the police, she opens the door and tells them that it is a peaceful and legitimate protest. The officer begs to differ by telling her that it is an illegal protest, that they are trespassing on private property, and unless they leave immediately, they will all be arrested. Giving them two minutes to decide if they are going to leave, or go to prison, the policeman in charge, who happens to be Kirsty's boss, tells her that he expects her to convince them to come to the right decision.

Terry is unhappy with this method of removal, saying he was hoping for tear gas and tazers, but the police officer tells him it will be done his way. Discussion is going on inside, and the only two who want to stay and fight are Tyrone and Mary. Mary takes us into the break trying to get the others on side by raising the battle cry. "Who is with me?" she cries.

LOL!! Obviously nobody is, because after the break we see them leaving the fortress with their hands up. Although Kirsty does assure them they can lower them. Mary is still militant though, and she tells Terry that the fight is not over, that they will not allow his sleazy enterprise to contaminate their community. Terry's response to that is to tell the policeman to lock her up first.

Kirsty's boss takes her aside and gives her a rollicking for getting involved in something like that. She tells him that she lives in the area, and it was a peaceful protest. He wags his finger in front of her nose, and tells her to make sure there are no more protests, no more hassle from Mr. Duckworth, and to make this problem go away.

Terry can't resist gloating to Tyrone about the fact he has won, so Ty tells him that he agrees with Mary, and he hasn't heard the last of it. Terry is not worried, and tells him that he has friends in very high places, and that his club will open no matter what they do.

Anna bemoans to Dev that now the excitement is over, it's back to the grindstone of trying to make ends meet. Dev tells her he was about to put a card in his window advertising for evening help, and asks if she would be interested. She tells him she will think about it.

Cue baby Jack looking sideways again, as Sally arranges his blankets. There is a knock on the door and a relieved Sally runs to open it, thinking it is Kevin come to take his baby. Instead however, it is Auntie Pam, and she is very agitated, as she has heard from Tyrone that Kevin and Sally are back together. Before Sally gets a chance to answer, she spots Jack, and figures that answers the question for her. Sally protests that she is just watching Jack as a favour to Kevin, as he had trouble with the child minder. Pam is hurt by this, because she has told Kevin he can call on them any time he needs help with Jack. She is terrified that if they are back together, Kevin will cut them out of Jack's life altogether.

She verbally attacks Sally, asking her if she has forgotten already what Kevin did to her with Molly, and Sal assures her she hasn't forgotten, and asks her where she received her information. Pam doesn't answer that, instead she asks her what she is thinking to allow Kevin back into her bed. She asks if he hasn't hurt her enough already. She points out that if he has hurt her once, he will do it again. Sally sucks a thoughtful tooth.

Rita drops by the garage and asks Kevin if he remembers what she had said to him this morning. Kev replies that he does, and he is determined he will not let Sally down again, that he has learned his lesson the hard way. Rita reminds him that Sally has had a lot to forgive to have come this far, and that she hopes it works out for them. Kevin agrees, and tells her he is not going to blow it this time.

Terry and Owen are inspecting the premises left by the squatters, and Owen is impressed that they have left the place in better shape than before they arrived. It is agreed that Owen will be back on the job first thing in the morning. Terry wants to know if the job will be completed on schedule, but Owen tells him that they have been put behind by the protest, and if he wants the date to be the same as before, it will cost him more money, and extra manpower. Terry agrees that it won't be a problem, but the club must open on schedule.

Pam is still having a go at Sally, telling her that Kevin is bragging to anyone who will listen that they are back together, and she is asking if that is correct, just as Kevin walks in the door. He asks Pam what she is doing there, and she snaps back that she could ask him the same question.

Sally explains that Pam has heard that they are back together, and has come round to express her disapproval. Pam tells them that there are only three people she cares about, the poor little baby, Tyrone and her Molly. Kevin tells Pam that he was going to invite her and Bill round anyway, and that whether she likes it or not, he has never stopped loving Sally, and they want to make it work. He goes on to say that No. 4 is the best place for Jack, because at least he is with a real family, when he says this, Sally averts her eyes. Pam replies that she supposes the plan is to shuffle them off, and they will never see Jack again. Kevin protests that it isn't the plan to do that at all, that they will always be part of his life.

Karl arrives home and Sunita is surprised to see him so early. He tells her that Steve has let him off early as it is his birthday. She asks if he liked his present, and he tells her he loves it, and now he always has a little bit of her in the cab with him. (Oh gag!) He then tells her he will have a pint pulled by the most beautiful woman in the bar before he goes through to see Stella. Sunita notes that as she is the only woman in the bar at the moment, she doesn't have a lot of competition. He banters that in that case he will wait until someone more beautiful than her enters the room. Just then the door opens and in walks Mary. "Still number one", Karl mutters to an amused Sunita.

Norris is looking for Rita, but nobody has seen her. Sunita lets them know that it is Karl's birthday, so Mary wishes him many happy returns. Anna appears, and Karl whispers to Sunita that she hasn't knocked her off her title either. Anna announces that she has just landed another job thanks to Sunita's husband, Sunita immediately puts her straight that Dev isn't exactly her husband. Anna tells Mary and Norris that landing this job will really help her to keep Faye in the manner to which she has never been accustomed to before. Mary is irritated that Anna's priorities have wavered from the cause at hand, and reminds her that they are running a campaign to keep smut off their streets, not a part-time employment bureau.

Karl appeals to Mary to suspend hostilities today at least, as it's his birthday, and suggests the three of them have a drink on him. Anna is more than happy to accept.

Gail and David are watching the telly when Kylie comes in, slamming the door behind her. She immediately announces she is only there to get her stuff, then she is gone. David asks if she received his texts, and is told she deleted them. Gail offers to make her some tea, and Kylie snaps that she doesn't understand her, one minute she is being accused of trying to murder Audrey, and the next there is tea on offer. Gail responds that she is doing it because she is still David's wife. Kylie looks at David and says "Hopefully not for much longer". she then flounces upstairs to collect her things.

Auntie Pam has gone now, so Sally badly wants to speak to Kevin. She suggests he sit down, and she will bring him a beer. He tells her he just wants a quick shower first, and then he kisses her tenderly, and tells her that she has been great today the way she stepped into the breach with Jack. He dashes upstairs leaving Sally speechless once again.

Kylie is now rushing back downstairs with not only a suitcase but poor little Max, who looks bleary eyed as if he has been woken up. Gail and David protest, and tell her she can't take Max with her. She replies that she can do just that, as he is her son. David suggests they sit down and talk it through, but she is not having any of it. She tells him that she knows how he and his whole family feel about her, and frankly she is happy to be out of it. Angry though she is, it is noted that her voice is wavering as she says it, and has tears in her eyes. David tells her he doesn't want her to go, and she replies that what he wants doesn't come into it. Gail asks her where she is going and how she is going to manage with Max. She replies that she only knows she is going as far away from them as she can, and since when does Gail care what happens to Max. Gail protests that she does care, and David tells her that he loves her. Kylie is totally confused by this, and accuses them of blaming her for everything, then when she runs for the door, they act surprised and tell her they care. She turns to David and asks him to say again that he loves her, he tells her he does. She tells him that she really loved him, and would have done anything for him, but when the chips were down he chose his Mum and his Gran over her, so now hopes they will all be very happy together.

With that, she turns and marches out the door with David running after her, begging her to come back home. She refuses, and tells him to leave her alone. He protests that he loves her and wants her to stay. She stops and tells him that to love her it's all or nothing, and he chose nothing, and that he should go back to his precious little family. He counters that she and Max are his family, but she replies that she has always been on her own, and always will be. With that, she leaves with tears running down her face, dragging Max along with her.

Kirsty is going over the events of the day with Tyrone. She can't understand why her boss would involve himself with a little incident like that, she feels that it goes much higher, and someone's palm is getting greased. Tyrone wants to know why, in that case, she told them to give up the cause, and is told it is because he is her superior officer, and he told her to. "That's how it works", she tells Tyrone. "He could have made things very difficult for me at work if I hadn't".

Kirsty is very suspicious, and then remembers that Terry had told Tyrone that he has friends in very high places. Tyrone wants to continue on and put a stop to Terry, and the investigator in Kirsty would love to get to the bottom of it too.

A nice and clean Kevin comes into the room, and Sally greets him with a beer, and an announcement that they need to talk about Jack. The camera pans to Jack, and he is looking malevolently sideways at them, (I don't want to be mean about a cute little child, but his stare really is quite off-putting). Anyway, Kevin wants to know why she wants to talk about Jack, as he had understood from her that he had been fine earlier. She finally manages to get the words out, that she feels little Jack deserves a proper Mum who can love him unconditionally, and she doesn't feel she can do it. He tells her he knows it is going to be hard, and that it will take time, but she replies that it won't work, it just can't work.

Sally goes on to tell him that she really does love him, but cannot love Jack, and cannot be his mother. Kevin tells her that she doesn't have to be his mother, but Sal responds that because he is part of him, she has to love him and be just that, but she can't. Crying now, she tells him that each time she looks at his little face, she feels sick inside, remembering the betrayal and the cruelty, which makes her feel so ashamed, and so much like a bad person. She goes on to say that she can't bear to have the little boy in the house, and if she can't have that, then she can't have Kevin either.

The credits roll with Kevin looking totally gobsmacked.

Owen and the crew are waiting to be paid and no work is done until that happens. Terry drives up and hands him a thick envelope of cash and it's all hands to the deck. Owen needs more help. Terry phones Tommy.

It's all very domestic at the Websters with Sophie holding Jack and Sally and Kevin at the table. Kevin gets a long and informative text from the child minder who's got glandular fever and will be off weeks. What to do? What to do? Kevin hopes Sally will mind the baby but she's already told him how she feels. He was hoping if she spent more time with Jack, she'd grow to love him. He thinks they can sort it out but she doesn't. He pours on the flattery but she's still reluctant even when he asks if she still loves him, which, by the way she does, but can't see how they can be together with this situation over their heads.

Tommy arrives at the building site and is dismayed to find out his father wanted him to help with the labourers but heaven forbid Terry gets stuck in, right? He's off to meetings.

Tyrone and Terry exchange a few words on the street. Terry defends his business plans and licenses as legit. Tyrone something fishy is going on and knows Terry is and always was a lowlife. Terry brushes him off but Tyrone persists in insulting him so Terry tells him not to push his luck.

Brian and Julie are heading down the street. It's the day of her 12 week scan and Brian isn't sure he's going to be able to make the appointment. Julie's upset about that. He said he'd be a hands on dad and he seems to find work more important. He promises he'll be a good dad but.. but... She accuses him of uttering empty words of support and walks away leaving him sputtering.

Anna is dismayed that Garry's working for Owen and can't look after Faye that evening while she's working at Dev's. Mary is in the cafe and offers her services. Anna is reluctant. She chats with Norris, Emily and Mary about Sylvia's ban on serving the builders. Mary thinks their energies should be focused on the Weatherfield in Bloom contest as a more productive use of their time. Kirsty and Tyrone come in. Ty has told Kirsty about Terry's menacing attitude. Unfortunately there's no evidence Terry has broken any rules and Kirsty points out that people do get permission to open such clubs. Tyrone refuses to throw in the towel. Kirsty says she can't get involved and they should contact their local councilor. Emily offers Deirdre as an advisor, she "used to work for the local council" (I fear Emily is losing her marbles. Deirdre spent some years AS a local councilor). Tyrone gathers the troops to go find Deirdre. Off they go, bacon butties in hand.

Sunita watches Karl washing one of the cabs with a flirtatious admiring smile. Stella comes along and wants him to take her into town. Music is blaring from the cab. He leaves the cab still half covered in soap though has managed to clear the wind screen and gets inside with her. She notes the new stereo straight away. He said he got it off a cousin.

Deirdre seems to have forgotten her past as well, pointing out she was only a PA for the council. Her friends want to know who would be in charge of this sort of thing. Deirdre instructs them about the name of the person in charge of special licenses but he's probably retired. She also passes on a rumour that that person was on the take. Tyrone immediately reckons Terry has bribed someone and they should storm Town Hall. Mary thinks storming the garden centre is a better use of their time and Norris doesn't think they can do much. Tyrone is determined and it looks like he'll have to go it alone.

Kevin has recruited Pam to mind Jack for the day, pretending he doesn't want to put too much on to Sally while they're trying to get back together. Apparently Pam is going to use the Webster house as the base for minding Jack rather than taking his things to hers.

Kirsty is cooking when Tyrone comes in ranting about bent councilors. She doesn't think there's anything he can do even if he's right. He's going to find something, some way, and he can't stand Terry getting away with it and Kirsty realizes it's more about Terry than the club. He agrees. Terry let Jack and Vera down over and over and he's determined to expose him.

After the break, Mary is armed with a hanging basket of flowers for Norris and Emily. Emily doesn't want to accept the plant. Mary is expecting everyone to get involved and runs over to see if she can borrow Owen's power drill to put up the basket herself.

Karl's cab comes around the corner, blasting Eric Clapton out the window. Sunita is returning from a shopping trip. She's wearing 4 or 5 inch spike heels. Seriously? He gets out and thanks her for the radio and told her the lie about it he'd told Stella. She wants to meet up as does he but they have to be careful.

Kirsty advises Tyrone that he can't go into town hall with all guns blazing. He tries to persuade him to help her. She's reluctant but ends up agreeing as long as he does all the talking, not her. It won't hurt to have a second set of eyes and ears at least.

Sally and Kevin are having a sandwich, sitting on the factory steps, and talking about the "situation" when Pam comes round the corner wheeling Jack in his pushchair. Sally goes back inside and Kevin comes over to see them. Pam compliments him on his fathering skills. He agrees he never did a lot when the girls were young but is really enjoying this hands-on experience. Pam gets right to the point, how does Sally like being a mum again. Kevin unconvincingly says she loves it and is confident they'll be back together permanently. Pam says she and Bill will help with Jack when needed. Kevin's got an idea and asks her to take Jack overnight so he can take Sally out. Kevin says he'll bring Jack and his things over later when Pam says she'd be delighted.

Julie arrives for her scan but Brian isn't in evidence yet. She witters on about Brian being important then sits down to wait.

Gary's come in for the tea for the builders. Anna serves him but warns against being seen by Sylvia. Mary is there and offers her services again. Eventually Anna agrees, having no choice.

Julie is still waiting but Brian shows up. He moans about the parking. They sit down to wait and chat. She's got her baby book there ready for the scan photo. They are called in by a technician that Brian recognizes.

Kevin tells Sally he's booked a table at the Bistro for them to talk properly.

Ty and Kirsty arrive at Town Hall. Kirsty advises him to stay calm and is there on behalf of the neighbourhood and wants to object to the lap dancing club when he gets to see councilor Peake. They arrive at the reception desk. The receptionist puts him off for a minute and Kirsty impulsively strides forward, flashing her police badge and takes over. Peake isn't there at the moment and they are instructed to wait but Kirsty sees Peake's office and slips inside.

The scan is underway. Julie is excited. Brian establishes that he used to teach the technician who seems to be having trouble finding the baby. Hiding, most likely. Brian continues chatting to her and Julie admonishes him for taking the attention away from the task at hand. And away from her. The technician excuses herself to consult with a colleague. Julie is immediately worried and Brian reckons the woman just doesn't know what she's doing. He tries to assure her but Julie is worried.

Kirsty starts looking around through the papers and plans on the councilor's desk. She finds his car key fob, with a Mercedes logo on it. She tries to access his email but it's password protected. councilor Peake comes in! Followed by Terry Duckworth!!!

Tyrone and Kirsty are standing in the councilor's office, looking guilty but when he asks what they're doing in there and threatens to call the police, Terry points out that Kirsty is the police. She adds that she's also a Weatherfield resident and that they're very concerned at the prospect of a lap dancing club being opened at the end of their street. The councilor tells them to go through the proper channels and make an appointment but Kirsty tells him not to try fobbing them off and that they want answers.

In the hospital, Julie is waiting anxiously to find out what the problem is with her scan. The consultant radiologist comes in says he know she's worried but asks her to bear with him for a few minutes.

Back in the councilor's office he's telling Kirsty and Tyrone that all the correct procedures were followed but Kirsty points out that nobody they know was consulted about the planning application. Ty wants to know what Terry's doing there if they're not in cahoots but it seems he has a perfectly legitimate reason as he claims he's made some small alterations to his plans which he wanted to run past the council.

The radiologist is looking at Julie's scan and we can tell by his face that it's not good news. He wants to go into his office to talk about it but Julie gets worked up and wants him to tell her what's wrong. Without much bedside manner he comes straight out and announces that she's not pregnant and there is no baby. He's still keen to take her through to his office but Julie is beside herself so he tells her there and then that the scan revealed a growth on her ovary and that it could have caused a false positive pregnancy test. Julie is, understandably, utterly distraught at this news.

In the street Mary is standing on a chair outside Emily's house, wielding an electric drill in a rather alarming manner, ready to hang their basket for the Weatherfield in Bloom competition. Emily observes that it's a bit sparse but we discover this is only the beginning of Mary's horticultural odyssey as she reveals her plans for the window boxes and the back yard.

Tina comes out of Dev's shop and is really annoyed when she catches sight of Tommy doing labouring work at the strip-club building site. She wants to know where Terry's got to but isn't surprised to learn that he's not around. Tina tells Tommy that she just doesn't like to see him getting used.

Meanwhile, Tyrone and Kirsty have arrived home. Ty's angry at the outcome of their run-in at the council. When she doesn't speak, Ty thinks Kirsty is annoyed with him but it turns out she's thinking. She tells Ty that although she was initially skeptical, she's now certain that there's something dodgy going on. In fact, she'd stake her career on it - or what's left of it after today. As Kirsty says, when you've interviewed as many crooks as she has, you get a feel for when someone's lying. The trouble is, she says, even if she's right, how do they prove it?

At Anna's, Faye comes bouncing down the stairs to ask what time Gary's coming over. Anna explains there's been a change of plan and Mary's coming instead. Faye can't believe her mum is serious. When Anna tells her she needs to be on her best behaviour Faye points out she can't do that or Scary Mary might come again. At that moment Mary arrives and Anna almost has second thoughts but Mary bundles her out of the door before fixing Faye with a look and saying that she's sure they'll get on like a house on fire.

In the Bistro, Kevin is treating Sally to a meal out. As Sally drools over the prospect of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Kevin flatters her by telling her how slim she's always looked. She asks him if he's hoping to get lucky later and then points out that they won't have the house to themselves as Sophie will be there. Kevin responds by telling her that he's lucky every night now that they're back together.

Back at Ty and Kirsty's they're still discussing the councilor. Kirsty says he wouldn't be the first one to take a back-hander and that people like Terry are always trying to cut corners and pay good money to get what they want. When Kirsty says she'll ring an ex-colleague who once handled a similar case he observes that she's really got the bit between her teeth. "I could always . " begins Kirsty but when Ty asks her to expand she tells him to forget it, it's too risky. She was thinking that she could always go onto the computer at work to see what she could dredge up. Ty reminds her that she's always saying that good coppers have got to go out on a limb sometimes and that if she found something which led to him being arrested then she would get Brownie points. "Yeah, and if I got caught I'd be for the high jump" says Kirsty. "Can't you do it when nobody's looking?" asks Ty. "No I can't," replies Kirsty, abruptly. "So don't ask me. "

Mary is laying down the house rules with Faye, the first one of which is to put down her computer game and look Mary in the eye when she's talking to her. We sense she means business.

Anna arrives for her shift at the corner shop, just as Dev is trying to break the news to Sunita that Aadi has won a place in a golf tournament. It's in Scotland, over a bank holiday weekend, and it will involve staying over. Dev is pleasantly surprised when Sunita doesn't take much persuading that they should be allowed to go, provided he does something for Asha to make up for it.

In the Rovers Brian looks on in concern while Julie drowns her sorrows. As she points out, there's nothing to stop her drinking as much as she likes any more. Brian tries to make all the right noises but as well as the news about the baby Julie is worried about the growth on her ovary. With misplaced optimism, Brian tries suggesting that they may be able to treat her problem with a couple of pills but Julie tells him it's wishful thinking. "I'm glad I've got you," says Julie. "And you always will have," replies Brian.

Kirsty arrives back home with several bags of shopping, including ten jars of mussels in vinegar (just in case we need reminding that she's pregnant). When Ty comments she was gone a long time, Kirsty casually mentions that she called in at work and tried looking up councilor Peak's name on the computer. She starts by making out there was nothing on him but then reveals that she remembered the details of the car he drives. So she did a bit more digging and . bingo! The registered owner is none other than a T. Duckworth. "What, he bought his car off Terry?" asks Ty, never one to be quick off the mark. "Or he gave it him and they haven't reregistered it," suggests Kirsty. Either way, she tells Ty that councilor Peak will have some awkward questions to answer which is why one of her colleagues is round there right now, paying him a visit. Ty is thrilled with this news and he and Kirsty hug each other and dance around the room.

At the building site, Owen and his men are knocking off for the night. Terry is in expansive mood as he describes his vision for the lap-dancing club to Tommy. He tells him he wants it to be classy, which, in Terry's eyes, is a club full of footballers and celebrities knocking back Champagne, while their stretched hummers wait in the street outside. Tommy tries to set him straight by suggesting it will be a magnet for undesirables. He tells Terry there is another way they could do it. They could forget the lap-dancing idea and turn it into a dance and music venue. Terry suspects Tina has put ideas into Tommy's head and tells him to keep her on her toes but he tells his Dad that he thinks the whole thing is a bit naff.

In the Bistro Kevin has been on the phone to Pam to check on Jack. He's in a buoyant mood and wants to order Champagne to celebrate them having dinner together like a happily married couple but Sally reminds him that the reason they're having such a good time is that their massive problem is away for the night. Kevin asks Sally if she really hates him that much. She replies that she doesn't hate Jack at all, she likes him, but she can't be his Mum. Kevin tells her that he's only just got her back and he's not going to let her go again but Sally replies that it's not just about what they want, there's a child to think about. "I'll give him up then," says Kevin but Sally tells him not to say that, she knows he loves Jack to bits and she doesn't want to hear him talking like that. Kevin is distraught at the thought of letting Sally slip away again.

Owen goes into the corner shop and Anna looks decidedly nervous when she sees who her first customer is. Dev leaves them to it and Owen asks if she was headhunted by Dev or if she just wanted a change of scene. Anna explains that she hasn't given her other job up but she wants to be able to give Faye a few more treats. "Speaking of Faye, who's with her now?" asks Owen as we cut to the scene at Anna's house. Faye is on her hands and knees, shining shoes, while Mary hovers over her with a pair of rubber gloves and a tin of polish.

At the Rovers, the beer barrel needs changing. Stella says she'll fetch Karl but, quick as a flash, Sunita offers to go for her. She finds Karl in the back room and casually mentions the fact that Dev and the kids are off to a golf tournament, leaving her all alone in the house .

Out in the bar, Tommy is outlining his ideas to his father about an alternative use for the club but Terry isn't buying it. He tells Tommy that, once he starts to see a return on his investment, they can then talk about a second club and he'll give Tommy carte blanche. At that moment, Ty and Kirsty come in, eager to break their news. Just as Terry is telling Rita, Norris and Emily that they're a bunch of nosey old cranks who should move into the 21st century, Ty and Kirsty join in the conversation. At first Terry looks confused when they start talking about the car he drives and then the penny begins to drop. Reality sinks in when Kirsty tells him that the police have just arrested councilor Peak for accepting bribes.

Back at the Bistro Kevin and Sally are still discussing Jack. Kevin tells Sally she's right, he could never give away Jack permanently. But there is an idea forming in his mind. Pam and his dad have offered to look after Jack any time, so why not make the most of their generous offer and make it full time? Sally is understandably horrified at this suggestion and she certainly doesn't want people thinking that she got Kevin to shunt Jack out of the way. But he doesn't see it like that at all and seems to think there's nothing wrong with dumping Jack with his grandparents so that he and Sally can be together. Despite Sally's protests that it's a terrible idea, Kevin tells her that he's still going to speak to Pam.

In the Rovers Terry is trying to convince the assembled company that all of his dealings with the council have been completely above board but Kirsty tells them that the police are doing a full investigation of all the planning applications which Peak dealt with and says that if there has been rule bending or arm twisting they'll find out about it. "I'll twist your arm," threatens Terry menacingly when it becomes clear he's been rumbled. "Does this mean it's the end of the club?" asks Norris. "It looks like it, thanks to Kirsty," says Tyrone proudly. Norris decides to break the habit of a lifetime and have a whole pint to celebrate. Emily joins him with a large sherry and Rita quips that she'll drink the whole bottle.

Outside, Terry is marching furiously down the street. When Tommy catches up with him, his father tells him that his mate's stupid, interfering wife's blown it for him. "It's over. I'm done for. It's over," he tells Tommy before climbing into his car.
