Wednesday 2 April

A battered and bruised Les is being interviewed at the police station by DC Meadows, who reminds him that, contrary to his [justified!] claims of police brutality, the police have sworn statements from two police officers (Hopwood and Watts) to the effect that it was Mr. Battersby who instigated the attack. Les is beside himself with rage, and his solicitor advises him to be calm.

Emma leaves for work, and Curly tells her to take care, since there are a lot of folk like Les out there. Emma looks a bit sheepish [as well she might!] and drives to work.

In the garage, Mike arrives to complain loud and long to Kevin about his mechanic's taking over his flat and his car. Tyrone pleads that it was 'only a prank' and Mike also adds that Tommy's daughter, Katy, was involved too, a latter-day Bonnie and Clyde. Tommy is incensed to hear this. Mike threatens to call the police, and exits in high dudgeon.

PC Hopwood and Janice both leave for work, Janice convinced that her boyfriend is completely innocent and that the cops should lock Les up and throw away the key. [Mick looks unconvincing as the victim.]

Underworld, and Mike is not a happy person. He breaks off his conversation with Joe and Karen when he spies someone he'd like a word with - Angela - who knows nothing about what has gone on. Mike tells her that she ought to have more control over her family, and that she's lucky still to have a job after her daughter's 'life of Riley' in his flat with Tyrone.

In the Kabin, Blanche and Bev (Shelley's Mum) meet up. Blanche insists that Peter and Shelley should have a traditional wedding, with the bride's family paying for the whole thing, and Bev counters by claiming that Peter is 'second hand'. [You're close, Blanche!!] Norris tries to intervene between the two protagonists, but is shouted down by both ladies.

In the garage, Kevin is not happy with Tyrone's 'prank', which the hapless Tyrone sees as having been a 'bit of fun'! Tommy warns Tyrone to stay away from Katy, and his family, otherwise...

Bev storms into the Rovers, fuming after her 'chat' with Blanche. Shelley reckons that she's so lucky having such a lovely fiancŽ as Peter. [I can't wait to see when the lovely Shelley finds out the truth about the man she thinks she's going to marry!!]

Chez Les, and Fiz bathes his battered face. She believes his story. Kirk does too. Steve arrives, and is shocked to see how badly Les has been bruised. However, he offers Les little in the way of sympathy, since he'll have to do his shift for him... [I never thought I'd ever say this - poor Les!!]

Mick meets Emma in the police station, and thanks her for her collusion in the reports of Les' alleged attack. Emma looks extremely uncomfortable.

Les gets into the Rovers for a pint, and meets Janice, who's also shocked by his appearance. However, she opines that he's had it coming, from a better man than he is.

In Underworld, Mike tells Joe that he'll have to go to the trade fair on his own, but Joe has other ideas; he could take Karen with him, for experience. Mike warns him that he's dealing with dynamite. Fiz and Janice have a set-to about what happened to Les, and Karen intervenes to break up the argument, while Joe watches from the office with approbation.

In the Rovers, Shelley tells Blanche to lay-off her Mum about the wedding plans, since they're none of her business. Blanche claims that she's 'politeness personified'. [Oh yeh?] Norris once again tries to be the peacemaker, but is again rebutted by the two ladies. [Norris will never learn.]

Underworld, and the lascivious Joe suggests to Karen that they go off to the trade fair together. It'd be good for her learning curve, he claims. Karen rebuffs him. Joe grins, as she storms off...

The Nelsons', and Tommy and Angela tell their wayward daughter to go and grovel to Mr. Baldwin for her idiocy.

Blanche comes into the bookies and halts Peter in his tracks - she's had her eyes opened and knows all, from the horse's mouth. Peter, of course, being the idiot he is, misinterprets Blanche's revelation, and he considers that he's a lucky man. [But for much longer, we wonder?]

Katy goes to see Mr. Baldwin just as he's closing the factory, and confesses her idiocy. Mike listens, but he hasn't yet decided what to do, but she'll be the first to know.

Back at the Rovers, Tracy tells Shelley (Peter is there too!) the sordid details of her sacking from the florist's, and of her former boss's liaison with some rake, her pregnancy, her marriage and her flight from this worthless man. Shelley is appalled by what she hears, and thinks how lucky she is to have such a nice man as Peter.

Les appears at Curly's, but Emma is still at work. Les wants justice, but Curly throws him out.

Rovers, and the wily Tracy turns the screw on her equally wily brother - what can he do for her, now that she's lost her job? Mike decides to put the wind up Tyrone, and accuses him of stealing a wad of £10 notes, which he wants back - by the weekend, or else!

Emma eventually tells Curly the unpalatable truth about her having lied about Les' alleged attack on Mick. Curly cannot believe that his wife has perjured herself to protect Mick. A cover-up? No, a fit-up!!

Friday 4 April

It's morning chez Les and he's getting dressed for court. [What do you call Les in a suit, shirt and tie? The defendant!] Kirk suggests to Fiz that a little eye make-up wouldn't go amiss, but Les' bruises are real, and he has no need of cosmetics. Les has the truth on his side, and is believed by Kirk and Fiz, but will that be enough?

Next door, chez Watts, Curly still can't believe that his wife, Sergeant Emma Watts, is prepared to see an innocent man, Les, suffer for something he isn't guilty of, but Emma sees things differently - she owes loyalty to a colleague, Mick, whom she describes as a 'good copper'. Curly pleads with Emma to tell the truth, and Emma promises to think about it. Curly asks her what "Inspector Watts" would think about her actions...

Back at Les', and he's ready to leave for court. Fiz mentions that Les has been no angel, but wishes him well. Kirk tells Les to look out for Tyrone in court, and spills the beans about Tyrone's recent sojourn in Mr. Baldwin's flat, and the apparent disappearance of some cash there from.

In the cafŽ, Tyrone confesses all to 'Aunty Vera', who first of all concludes that Tyrone has 'put a bun in Katy's oven'! Vera then concludes, as only Vera can, that it's all Katy's fault and that she never trusted that Nelson family anyway.

The crooked copper, Mick, arrives in his car to collect Emma, just as Janice appears and tells him that Les is a devious swine, just as the afore-mentioned, bruised and innocent, comes out of his house to go to court. Glances are exchanged. Tyrone meets up with Katy and tells her of the missing money from Mr. Baldwin's. Katy tells Tyrone that it's his problem, and storms off to school.

Peter speaks to Sally, en passant, and mentions that they might need an extra pair of hands at the bookies. [Has Peter, perchance, picked a possible poodle for his purpose?] The other crooked copper, Emma, gets into Mick's car and she tells him that she's told Curly the truth about Mick's assault. Mick pleads with her to stand by him, otherwise he'll lose his job and pension.

In the factory, the 'girls' discuss the missing Baldwin cash. How much was it, they wonder? Mike and Joe overhear this conversation, and Mike decides on a round figure of £1,000. [Very loud stage whisper, which the 'girls' all hear.] Mike reminds Joe never to underestimate the power of gossip!

The hapless Les, after his court appearance, comes into Streetcars, wondering when he can start work again. Dev is there, and has made up his mind about Les' guilt, so he sacks him, despite Eileen's protestations. Poor Les has 'brought Streetcars into disrepute', according to the saintly Dev.

In the Rovers, the cheating Peter slinks in and Tracy demands a drink from him; after all, thanks to him, she now is unemployed. Does he remember why she's unemployed, she chirps. [I think Peter has a rather good idea....] Peter offers her a job in the bookies, which she accepts ungracefully.

In the cafŽ, Tyrone wonders about how he's going to raise £1,000 to pay Mike back. Kirk promises that, if the worst comes to the worst, they'll all sign his plaster cast.

In the Rovers, Angela and Tommy discuss their errant daughter's recent escapades with Tyrone, which have to cease, now! Steve and Karen are all lovey-dovey, and Joe appears, intent on getting Karen to accompany him to the trade fair. [Joe doesn't give up easily, but how long will it be till Karen gives in?] Steve leaves for work, and Joe presses home his opinion: to wit, that Karen is ruled by Steve, and that Karen has to do what Steve says.

In the garage, a penitent Tyrone approaches his boss, Kevin, and asks him for a loan of £820, which he'll pay back with interest. Kevin is not interested.

Tracy swans into the bookies and hangs her coat up, much to Sally's surprise and chagrin. Peter vacillates, again.

Chez Nelson, and Katy is getting a grilling from her parents. She must never see Tyrone ever again.

Streetcars, and Steve is on duty on the phones when his wife storms in for a 'meaningful discussion' [that means a shouting match!] about their respective careers. The upshot is that Karen has decided that she's going to go to the trade fair with Joe, on a purely professional capacity of course, and Steve will just have to accept that.

Mick drops Emma off at her house, just as an inebriated Les passes and accuses the dreadful duo of being complicit in lies, lies and more lies. Emma, visibly upset, seeks the sanctuary of her home, telling Mick to go home and leave her alone. [Les swings a blow at the dissembling Mick, but misses. Drat!!]

In the Rovers, Bev sidles up to Peter to discuss the impending wedding. She tells Peter that, if anyone hurts her daughter, Shelley, he'll have her to deal with. Peter assures Shelley's Mum that he will honour his commitment to Shelley, come what may.

Chez Watts, and the discussion continues about the rights and wrongs of Emma's actions, which Emma declares are not black and white. [Les would claim 'black and blue', rightly!] Curly is disgusted at his wife's lies, which are going to determine the wrongful punishment of an innocent man - Les.

Tyrone, desperate to get some cash together to pay Mr. Baldwin back for the 'missing' money, threatens to steal a car and sell it for a quick injection of capital. Katy appears, and pleads with him not to do this, but Tyrone is determined to clear his name, even if it means stealing a car and selling it to 'a man he knows'. Tyrone wants Katy to stay away from him; he thinks he has no choice....

Curly is still annoyed at Emma for ma king a statement against Les, he has a go at her and tells her she should tell the truth.

Tyrone is in the pub at 6, waiting for Mike. Kirk and Fiz are waiting to watch the fun. Mike comes in and Tyrone insists he didn't touch any money, Vera sticks up for him...........but Mike makes him turn out his pockets, poor lad has about £20, so Mike takes it to pay for the broken figurine, Tyrone tells him he will pay the £1,000 back at so much a week.......Mike says what £1,000??? he admits it was a trick to pay him back for using his car and flat....and warns Tyrone that it had better not happen again!!!!!

Karen is all packed for her trip, she tells Steve that she loves him, but he feels so unsure about this trip. he asks her what is most important?? Her job ...or her marriage???? He tells her if she goes, not to bother coming back....their marriage is over!!!!!

Monday 7 April

Karen is dressed for her trip to the trade fair [with Joe Carter] and still insists to her husband that it's business only. Steve is not convinced, and pleads with Karen not to go. If she goes, she needn't come back, Steve says. She goes.

Chez Nelson, and the wayward and bored Katy tries to curry favour with her Dad, by making him a bacon butty, to atone for her recent stupidity with Tyrone. Angela asks Craig about how the [alleged] play is coming on. Katy goes off to school.

Janice and Mick share an early morning snog in the street, before they go off to work. [Mick is moving in to Janice's today.]

Outside the factory, Joe has hired a flash car to whisk Karen and him to the trade fair in Wolverhampton. He is delighted with his toy. [The car - not Karen!]

Ashley asks Curly for tips about hiring a nanny, but Curly can't help. [Curly, of course, has other worries on his mind - being married to a self-confessed bent copper.]

Steve watches, silently, as Joe and Karen drive off for their business trip together. Les appears and asks Steve about his having been sacked, but Steve doesn't see this as a good time to broach that subject.

In the cafŽ, Katy tells Tyrone that she's been banned from seeing him, but she'll ignore her parents' wishes and rushes off to school. Vera opines to Tyrone that Katy is trouble. [Tyrone objects to Vera's description of him as "not the brightest button in the tin".]

Steve arrives in Streetcars to find Eileen and Patrick having a chat; both sense that Steve has something on his mind.

Back in the cafŽ, Jack and Kirk pool their ideas for a competition in a magazine - Your Ideal House. Kirk comes up with some zany ideas, like a round bed and a round bath... ... while Vera rounds on Mike, when he enters for a cup of tea, for winding Tyrone up. Mike counters by accusing Tyrone of acting illegally, and that he got off lightly.

Back room of the Rovers, and Bev raises the tricky subject of babies with her daughter and Peter; when can she expect to be a Grandma? Peter thinks that he and Shelley should try for a baby immediately. [The deceitful Peter seems to have got over his grief about Lucy's departure rather quickly methinks.]

In Streetcars, Steve tries to phone his wife, but her mobile is switched off.

In the Rovers, Jack and Kirk continue their quest for a snappy slogan for the magazine competition. [Don't apply for Mensa, lads!] Les' allegations about police brutality, apparently, have been logged, Mick states. Emma feels [and looks] guilty. [She is!] Steve has a few drinks with Dev and pours out his worries to him, just as Mike enters, and Steve finds out from him that Joe and Karen are staying at Westhope Court Hotel.

Joe stops his flash car at the hotel and asks Karen for a smile. She complies. Just. All she wants, she says, is a proper business relationship and nothing more, but Joe keeps up his tactic of innuendo.

Steve phones the hotel, but there is no room in the name of Mrs McDonald, only a double room in the name of Mr. Carter. [Are Steve's worst fears now confirmed?] Les arrives in the office, hotly pursued by Kirk, who hands him a recorded delivery envelope, which contains divorce papers sent by Janice's solicitor. Les pleads with Steve for his job back, but Steve's mind is on other things. Les still claims that he is the victim. [Which he is. Poor Les.]

Back in the cafŽ, Katy comes up with a snappy slogan for Tyrone's and Jack's competition. She borrows Tyrone's phone and arranges to meet one of her old friends, Louise from Sheffield, tonight.

In the Rovers, Steve tries to persuade Dev to accompany him on a binge, but Dev has other plans and declines. Shelley is excited at the thought of being a mother, and she looks forward to a night of passion with the weasel Peter. Janice and Mick drop in for a pint. Mick has completed his move, much to Janice's approval. [If she only knew the truth about this sleuth!]

Katy gets permission from her Dad to 'do her homework' with a friend, promising to be back by 10h30. Angela and Tommy are pleased that she's making friends.

Steve is in a bar in town, drowning his sorrows, and meets a young lady, Julie, who chats him up and buys him a drink. [Julie thinks that Steve has 'lovely eyes'...]

The day's work at the trade fair nearly over, Joe and Karen meet for pre-prandial drinks before their clients arrive. Joe tells her that Mike is the old face of Underworld, and he and Karen are the new faces. [As chat-up lines go, this seems fairly original, but I'm no expert.]

Julie makes her intentions clear to Steve; she fancies him. And Steve doesn't seem too worried about the idea.

Back at Westhope Court, Joe continues his pursuit of Karen, now that the clients have gone. It'd be a shame if a beautiful woman like Karen were to sleep alone, he suggests. Karen listens to his chat, but eventually decides to go home to Steve, for if she stays...

Steve entertains Julie at the flat and assures her that his wife is in Wolferhampton [spelling?] in a hotel with her boss. Couple of glasses of wine, a quick snog and they head for the bedroom... Steve and his newly acquired friend, Julie, are in bed together, and Steve gets up for some water, just as the phone rings. Steve panics when he hears Karen's voice on his answering machine - she'll be home soon.

The Nelsons', and Craig puts on a rather tacky preview of his play for his parents, who applaud. [Out of courtesy, I think!] They all wonder where Katy is.

Katy is at a restaurant with her pal Louise, and they catch up with all the gossip.

Steve almost drags Julie out of his bed and urges her to leave immediately. He offers her £10 for a taxi, but she decides to walk home. Julie says that she'll see him again, but Steve is just anxious to see Julie's immediate departure. [Is his panic over?]

Mick and Janice cuddle up on the sofa after he's moved his stuff in.

Steve hurriedly makes the bed and tidies up, and Karen arrives home to a less than warm reception. Steve is not enthralled to hear that she's forked out £100 for her taxi fare home, and becomes all suspicious about why she left the hotel to come home. Did she and Carter have a row? Why was there no room in the name of McDonald at the hotel? And [guess what!] they have a ding-dong row.

Katy and her pal Louise promise to meet again soon for a gig.

Steve and Karen eventually make peace, albeit temporarily, and cuddle on the sofa. Karen asks what Steve did and he prevaricates. More cuddles. [How long can this peace last, we wonder?]

Meanwhile, chez Nelson, Katy is late back and Tommy notices that she's forgotten to take her English books with her, which would be a tad essential for her to complete her homework. Katy offers some lame excuse and storms off upstairs to bed, accusing her parents of not caring whether she has mates or not.

Steve offers Karen a glass of wine and [realizing that he hasn't washed the two glasses from his previous guest's visit], he rushes in to the kitchen and hides the two dirty glasses. Karen tells Steve [who looks guilty, because he is] that they have to trust each other, and everything seems alright with the two of them. Cuddles ensue.

Janice and Mick drink a toast to their future together. Mick worries about his imminent appearance in court, regarding Les' alleged assault claims, but Janice considers that he has nothing to worry about. Any jury will believe Mick, not Les. [Poor Les, I say again.]

In the Rovers, Les again proclaims his innocence to all in ear-shot, while Curly listens, knowing that what Les says is true. Les and Mick almost come to blows, but Curly intervenes and defends his wife's honour. [Emma, meanwhile, looks on bemused and proud of her husband for defending her.]

Karen and Steve seem reconciled, but when Karen goes into the bedroom she discovers a blond hair on the pillow, as well as a sniff of a strange perfume, which is not hers. Steve claims innocence, at first, but Karen accuses him of sleeping with another woman and she goes on the offensive. Steve admits his infidelity, claiming it was a one-off, but Karen goes berserk and attacks him, verbally and non-verbally. Steve attempts [vainly] to explain his philandering, but Karen says that they're finished, for good. Steve tries all in his power to convince his wife that he loves her, but Karen has been accused of cheating by Steve; instead, it's the other way round, and she [with tears of anger and sadness] storms out of the flat, despite Steve's pleas for her to stay...

In the Rovers, Jack asks Vera to fill in the form for the magazine competition, but Vera points out a slight detail - the closing date for the competition was 1 May, 2002!!

Chez Watts, and Curly now [after his defense of Emma in the Rovers] feels he's embroiled in the deception. What'll happen to his reputation if the truth comes out? He's married to a bent copper, and he's now, thanks to her, a bent councilor.

Janice and Mick are enjoying an al fresco supper of greasy chips when they spy a tearful Karen sitting in the bus stop, with nowhere to go. They approach and offer support and advice, but Karen snaps at them, through her tears, saying that her marriage is over, for good.

Wednesday 9 April

Well I hope it doesn't take too long for Freeserve to get this episode to you.

Steve gets up after having "hit the bottle". Takes a drink of milk. Then he starts smashing things in the kitchen.

Karen has been staying with Janice and Mick. She can't face going to work, and is in tears.

Katy wants to go to a gig on Saturday night. Her mum is not too happy and tells her she can't go. Dad says he will think about it provided she behaves herself and stays away from Tyrone.

Tommy sees Tyrone at the garage on his way to drive Katy to school. He says he wants a word with him (Tyrone) when he comes back. Tyrone looks surprised.

Fred reminds Ashley that they are interviewing for a nanny. Fred says a nanny should be like a good side of beef, from good stock, sweet and firm! Ashley says they differ because he likes his beef rare whereas Fred likes it well done! (Any nannies out there fit the description?).

Tommy sees Tyrone. He tells him not to go with his daughter again. Tyrone says he wasn't with her, but Tommy says Katy said she was, at which point Tyrone tries to cover by saying he may have seen her for a while.

Joe asks the workforce where is Karen. Janice says she is not well. Fizz asks how she knows. Janice replies that maybe she rang everybody and nobody else was in.

Kirk comes into the cafe and asks Jack what he is doing. He says he is writing a best seller! Kirk is about to leave when Jack tells him to sit down and help him with a £50 crossword competition. Tyrone comes in and is also interested.

The first nanny arrives late. Fred answers the door to her and brings her into Ashley. The way she is dressed, she could be described as a "tart" (I am sorry if you don't understand the word, but it means a lot to British people, but I can't think of another word to describe her). Her name is Madonna. Fred asks her if her mother was religious! Ashley asks her if she has any (post-school) qualifications like NNEB, BTEC or GNVQ. The answer was a "whaaat?" Ashley asks her why she wants the job. She says that it probably is not as smelly as her previous job in a dry cleaners. She says she doesn't really like kids, but it is probably a good job. Fred asks her if she has any questions. She asks if this is the place where it all happened - where the woman got murdered.

As everybody is leaving the factory, Joe asks Janice for more information about Karen. She says that she doesn't know anything more.

Steve goes to Streetcars. Eileen tries to joke with him, but he says he is not in the mood. [oh, just remembered, the actor that played Jim McDonald was in 'Casualty' a long running hospital series last Saturday - so he was - this has no relevance to tonight's story, but just thought I would throw it in! - back to the story] Steve tells Eileen that Karen has left him. She asks him why and he tells her the story. Eileen is not surprised she walked out.

Jack is struggling with the crossword. Neither Kirk or Tyrone can help. Roy overhears the question and gives the answer.

The next interviewee for the post of nanny chez Peacock. This is a bright looking girl called Claire. She is taking a qualification. Fred is worried that "we" will be paying for the classes. Ashley asks her if she knew about what occurred there. She says that she had read about it and offers him deepest sympathy. Ashley indicates to Fred that she is very suitable. Fred says she has no actual experience, and wants to see the others.

Tommy tells Angela that he has spoken to Tyrone. She is annoyed that he gave in to Katy this morning.

The next nanny arrives. She is an formal two piece suit. She wants to make sure that Joshua is well disciplined. She wants to set the rules that Ashley would have to abide by. She will stand no nonsense. Fred nods that he prefers her. Ashley tells Fred that she showed "no joy". Fred thinks she is most suitable, and tells Ashley that he more or less hinted to her that the job would probably be hers. Ashley says he will sleep on his decision.

Tommy tells Katy that she is not going to the gig. Katy is very annoyed and is ready to storm out, but both her parents tell her no.

Janice comes home to Karen. She tells her that Joe was asking about her. Janice said she told him that she (Karen) was sick. Janice confirms that she has not told Joe anything.

Steve is getting drunk in the Rovers. Eileen walks in and he offers her a drink. She thinks he has had enough. She suggests that he ought to go home. Then Joe comes in and Steve starts an argument. Joe tells Steve that he has not since she left him in Wolverhampton. Steve accuses him of fancying his wife. Joe confirms that he does. However he has seen other men fancying her, but she is not interested. Joe tells him to go and find Karen.

Friday 11 April

Katy asks her Dad not to keep picking on her. He says he doesn't. She says all she wants to do is to go to a gig like every other normal person. Craig accuses her of trying it on with her Dad. She wouldn't do it with her Mum. At this point her Mum walks in and says he is right, and the decision is final she is not going to the gig. Katy walks out without having breakfast. Her parents are worried that she needs food for her diabetes.

Janice reminds Karen of her rights. She tells her that she is entitled to 50% of worldly goods. Karen is worried what she is going to say to Joe. Janice tells her not to worry.

Craig meets Katy at the bus stop and gives her a banana, so that she can have some food.

Steve sees Karen and Janice walking to work. He calls to Karen who ignores him.

Ashley tells Fred that he has slept on the decision of who is to be the nanny. He says that Fred has worn him down and he will hire the disciplinarian. Fred thinks it is perfectly right. Ashley says that Joshua needs someone with experience.

Joe takes Karen into the office. He asks her what is going on. She tells him that she has left Steve. While she was getting home, he was showing how much he loved her. He was with a "slapper". Joe sees his chance and starts to make an advance, but Karen is not interested.

Rita asks Emily about her health as she is looking a bit under the weather. Emily is about to open up to Rita when Norris comes in to the shop to discuss an order. Emily leaves and Rita turns to Norris and tells him that Emily was about to open up to her. Norris says he understands her problems it is just trauma.

Fizz asks Janice what she knows about Karen. When she says she doesn't know anything, she asks Haley. Then Karen's mobile rings. Fizz picks it up, it is Steve. Disappointed, she hands the phone to Karen, who immediately switches it off.

The much nicer girl who applied to be a nanny, Claire, comes round to Ashley to collect her references. She left him with the originals by mistake (how convenient!). When the phone goes, she starts to look after Joshua.

Steve catches up with Karen after work. Fizz is interested. Karen tells Steve to come out with the excuses, about it was a "one-off", a "mistake", "it won't happen again" She tells him to go away.

Claire gets on very well with Joshua. Ashley decides to offer her the job. When Ashley asks her if she has any questions, she says that Fred was very rude to her. Ashley tells her not to worry. She is very enthusiastic and wants to start straight away.

Fizz is still trying to get information from Janice. Fizz says she is not the only one who wants to know. Janice says if Karen wants to tell anything then she will. Karen comes into the main factory and Fizz asks her. Karen says it is nothing to do with her.

Katy goes to the garage to see Tyrone. Tommy comes in and sees them and is very annoyed.

Karen goes to see Joe again. He apologizes. She also says sorry, but accuses him of starting her starting the disagreement between herself and Steve.

Steve tells Dev that Karen has left him.

Katy asks Craig what he is going to do when their parents find out he's not in the play. However she has a plan. The idea would be for him to see her old mates, and his mates as well.

Betty is surprised that Ashley is letting a stranger looking after the baby. Fred says it will be a rest for him as well.

Blanche tries to get Tracy together with Deirdre and Ken. It (naturally) doesn't work.

Craig tells his parents that the play that evening is off, they have postponed it, and they are having a dress rehearsal instead. Parents are not invited. He would like someone to watch and nominates Tracy. (It is obviously a scam).

Ken tries to make "small talk" with Dev. When Dev and Tracy go to the bar, The Barlows think that could have gone better.

Blanche sees Tracy as invites her round for dinner on Saturday.

Ashley tells Fred that he has taken on Claire. Fred is not not happy.

Steve comes home to find Karen inside and has changed the locks. He begs her to stay, but she is having nothing of it.

Sunday 13 April

Oh you must have done something bad in your lives ;-) Not only have you had to put up with my reports since last Wednesday, but you have me tonight and tomorrow (Sue is away for the next couple of weeks). Don't worry, all is not lost though, Iain is back on Wednesday.

Steve gets up at Eileen's where it almost dinner time. He considers that it was only one night and everybody is getting over-excited about his one mistake. Eileen thinks he should grovel to Karen and if that doesn't work, grovel again.

Emily is in the cafe with Norris. Roy asks her if she is ok, he doesn't think she looks too well. She says she is ok. Then Vera comes over and asks her the same question.

Craig is "rehearsing" for the play that he is not in, in front of his parents. They ask him if he is sure that no parents are allowed at the rehearsal. He says that is right. He says Katy can come. She pretends not to want to watch. However she is "persuaded" to do so. Tommy offers to pick him up afterwards, but he insists he will be ok if he comes home with Katy.

Norris tells Karen that he noticed a locksmith outside her house recently. He asks why, she thinks about it for a moment and then says it is because she lost her key. He tells her that she must provide her landlady with a key. Rita tells Norris she is capable of asking herself. She tells Karen that she can drop it by when she has a moment.

Jack and Tyrone are looking through a newspaper. They eventually find the crossword page and see that Mr. J Duckworth has won.

Norris discusses with Rita, Emily's healthy. They arrange to coincidentally meet with Emily in the Rovers later.

Katy and Craig go off to the "rehearsal". They make arrangements to meet later, although Craig is worried they will be found out.

Janice tells Steve in the corner shop that Karen has chucked him out. Dev thinks he must try and get back together with her quickly.

Blanche has organized for Tracy to come with Dev for dinner at Ken and Deirdre's. Dev knows nothing about it , and is surprised that he should be asked again.

Katy meets her old mates.

Janice goes round to Karen's. The place is in a mess. Janice thinks maybe she should forgive Steve, particularly as it was only a one-night-stand. She tells Janice that she still loves him.

Ken and Deirdre return home. Blanche is cooking Shepherd's Pie. Then Tracy arrives. She says she thought it was just her and Blanche. Blanche says she is lucky that Ken and Deirdre are there. Tracy is embarrassed.

Tyrone tells Maria that he and Jack have won the crossword competition. [I do wish they would get back together again]. Tommy is pleased to see Tyrone in the pub. He knows that he is not with Katy.

Ken tells Blanche, in the kitchen, that it was a risky move what she did. Deirdre reminds Katy that they did talk together yesterday .... briefly. There is a knock on the door. It is Dev, just in time for dinner.

Vera tells Jack that Roy helped with the crossword, therefore they only won just over £16 each.

Norris brings Emily into the pub, and they spot Rita.

A man spots Katy returning from the concert.

At the Barlows dinner table there is embarrassed conversation. Tracy and Dev say they have to leave early, much to the annoyance of Ken and Deirdre. Blanche tries to smooth the path.

Rita gets Norris to get drinks in while she chats to Emily. She is worried that that when they investigate Richard Hillman's affairs, it will lead to her. She sold him her house, in good faith, but would the investigators believe her?

Steve meets Karen in the pub. Janice leaves. They both says they will do anything to get it right. They are both in tears. He says is so sorry. They want to make it work. However she wonders if she can ever trust him again in the future? She runs out crying.

Tommy and Angela return from the pub. They almost spot Craig waiting for Katy. They meet up. The guy (Andy) who spotted Katy earlier has followed her home. He rings his mate to say that he followed her home. He says that by this time tomorrow the family will be dead.

Will we find out tomorrow? Will the family survive? Do we really care? I will be back with two reports (squeezed into one) tomorrow night.

Monday 14 April

Apologies for the late delivery of this report. I prepared it all last night, but could not get my modem to connect. Luckily I saved the document before my PC completely crashed, and I have brought it into work!!!

Anyway, this is what happened last night in the UK.

Rita's shop is busy (for once). Craig wants something, but for some reason he is not speaking to Rita. He is pointing at things, and Rita is trying to second guess him. Vera is also in the shop as is Sarah. Vera tells Sarah that she is waiting for her mother to come home from holiday. Rita gives Craig a half used pad of 'post-it' notes. (I bet you call them something else. They are usually yellow, small rectangular pads with a very light glue on them. You write on them and stick them on someone's monitor or somewhere else prominent!).

Sarah tells Todd that Bethany will be staying with "Aunt" Emily. It will mean they can spend their last day together.

At the Nelson's, Craig is not talking to anyone. Nobody can understand why. However as soon as Tommy and Angela go out, he talks to Katy. It seems it is a ploy for him to not "performing" in the play. Katy emphasizes nobody must find out what happened last night.

Fred says the house is in a mess. He tells Ashley that he should have taken on the other nanny with a starch pinny. Ashley explains to Joshua that he and Fred will not be far away, as he hands him over to the new nanny.

Karen is having problems with the sewing machine in Underworld.

Roy is trying to work the overtime rota at the cafe. It takes into account, age, experience, length of service and other circumstances. (I am sure he has a graph to work it out!).

Jack tells Vera that he has won another competition in the Gazette.

Rosie tells Katy that she wants to see 'Sands' (?!), but her mum has told her that she is too young. Katy offers to lend her, her copy of the CD.

Ashley returns unexpectedly during the day. The nanny says there is no need to worry.

Angela overhears Craig arguing with Katy as she arrives home. She then calls him a liar when he starts pretending he can't talk again. He then confesses to Tommy and Angela that he is not in the play. They want to know where he has been, what he and Katy have been doing while he has pretended to be at rehearsals. Tommy says that he wants the answers when he comes home from work.

Eileen is having trouble at Streetcars. Lot of people are calling for cars, but she is four drivers down. Dev comes in and is concerned to hear her irritated on the phone. He says she should be more pleasant on the phone. Steve is no help, just hanging around.

Karen is talking to Joe. He says he can help, if she needs time off or anything. She says time off would just give him more time for him to grovel at her.

Todd meets Eileen in the pub. He tells her that it is his and Sarah's last night together, and wants to borrow some money so that he can make her something special.

Dev comes in and sees Steve. He tells him that someone had to wait for an hour to get a cab from Streetcars. He tells him that there is no need to mope around but he should to do something positive.

Angela asks Harry if he has seen Craig. He has been missing since dinner time. She asks Fizz, who thinks she is overprotective

Two guys in a car are waiting at the end of the street. They are looking for the Nelsons.

Roy spots Craig in the street. Hayley says she will have a word with him before ringing his mother. She tells him that as a kid she would run off at east once a fortnight. She asks him if he has eaten. He says he has hasn't. She invites him into the cafe for food.

Todd and Sarah are spending their last night together before her mother returns home. She says her mother would go up the wall if she found out how much he had spent at the house with her. The phone rings and it is Gail. She tells her that she has put Bethany to sleep and she is revising. Todd is smirking behind her.

The guys in the car spot Katy coming from a house. They wait there while Steve is ringing Karen's doorbell and entry phone system.

Jack tells Harry that he hasn't exactly won £100 as he told Vera. He has won a voucher that entitles him to £100 of his next holiday! He goes over to tell Vera. Within moments one can here voices being raised.

Guys arrive mistakenly at Sally's home. They say they are old friends of Tommy and Angela and want to know where they live. Sally obligingly tells them.

The men arrive at the Nelsons. Katy is the only one in. One of them goes round to check the house. They shout at Katy and ask her where her mother is. They don't believe her when she says she has gone out for the night with her dad.

Steve is going through Karen's house taking his stuff. They shout at each other. He accuses her of starting it by drooling over Joe. They start to smash up the crockery.

Katy tries to plead with the men to go and they won't be caught. It is to no avail.

Tommy and Angela pick Craig up from the cafe. They want answers from him. He is reluctant to give them. He apologizes to them.

Todd wishes Gail would stay in Canada for another week.

Katy wants to get her insulin injection for her diabetes. She says she needs it otherwise she will go into a coma. The men snatch the syringe away from her.

Fred is surprised at how well the new nanny has tided the place and got on well with Joshua. She says she is not meeting her boyfriend till 8pm and could take him for a walk.

Sally is talking to Kev. She mentions how two men came looking for Angela and Tommy. Kev is suspicious and says he will go and check on the house.

Steve is trying to take the tv away from Karen's flat. Karen is shouting behind and hitting him.

Kev knocks on the door of the Nelsons. There is no reply. Kev looks through the window. He can't see anything. He tells Sally to call the police.

Craig explains to his parents in the cafe that he missed the audition, and made up the story so that he could get some freedom.

Sarah tells Todd that something seems to be going on across the Street. Todd presumes it is Steve.

Kev goes next door to Fred to find out if he has heard any funny noises from the Nelson's house. He says he hasn't, but says he and Ashley haven't been in long. Sally who is in the dark about the witness protection scheme, wants to know what is going on.

Tracy is talking to Betty about relationships. Peter thinks that at last she has seen sense. Then Dev comes along.

Joe joins Karen and Janice in the pub. They talk about Steve taking the tv. Karen says she is not so stupid. She still has the remote control!

Dev gives Tracy a credit card on his account.

The men in the house worry about the police coming. Katy pleads for her injection.

At Eileen's, Jason sees Steve's tv. He asks for the remote control. When Steve realizes he hasn't got it, Eileen says that it is possible to change stations manually. She also tells him that they used to have black and white tv.

Tommy and Angela arrive home with Craig just as the police arrive. Kev explains to them all what maybe happening. The police won't let Tommy or Angela get near the house. Katy starts screaming. Tommy rushes in. Two shots from inside ring out ......

Iain takes over on Wednesday to find out who is dead, alive, injured or could it be a bullet in the ceiling ?!!

Wednesday 16 April

We start, not surprisingly, chez Nelson, where the cops burst in to the happy home where the gruesome Morgan brothers are attempting to exact revenge on the family for the jailing of their brother on a murder charge. Katy is in a near-coma on the couch, after they'd deprived her of her life-saving insulin, while Tommy, who had bravely tried to rescue Katy, lies motionless on the carpet. The gun-toting Nick is overpowered in the garden by one of the cops, while the other brother, Andy, has managed to escape the clutches of the law. [How this low-life can break into a run after smoking non-stop is beyond me! And this latter should see his dentist right away - try some Pepsodent occasionally, pal!]

Next door, in the meantime, Ashley is pining for Joshua, and wants to go out to look for him, but the wise Fred stops his son from being Sir Galahad, and advises caution; Joshua will be alright, he opines, with Claire.

Outside, in the street, mayhem ensues. Gunfire has been heard, and a distraught Angela screams to be let into her house, just as the cops drag a reluctant prisoner [sorry - suspect!] out of the house and into the awaiting cop van. [Ah, 'tis the dreaded Nick, who has just been nicked. Sorry, couldn't resist that obvious pun!]

Angela eventually forces her way into her house. Tommy seems ok, and Katy is being looked after by a paramedic. However, both father and daughter are to be taken to hospital for treatment. Tommy has been shot, but where is the bullet?

Again in the street, word spreads about what has been going on [with some embellishment]. Sarah and Todd view the scene, and Todd assures Sarah that little Bethany will be the better for not having had to witness this latest lawless activity. Tommy Nelson is wheeled out to the ambulance, and the assembled crowd watches.

Ashley is still fretting about where wee Joshua is, and Fred makes some crass comment about "Justice", perhaps not very apt in the circumstances post-Maxine. However, Claire brings little Joshua home, safe and sound, and Ashley clasps his son to his bosom. [Joshua is wearing what looks like, to the writer, a Cub cap, which the writer remembers wearing as a wee boy when he was in the Cubs. Of course, you're all much too young to remember such things... Nostalgia isn't what it used to be, I suppose.] Ashley has come to a decision: Joshua needs his Dad, not a nanny, but Fred thinks that 'no harm has been done'.

Sally is being interviewed by a policeman for further details [especially about the chain-smoking yob who has escaped] and, after the cop leaves, Sally quizzes Kevin about what he knows about the Nelsons. Kevin, rather reluctantly, tells Sally that they're on a Witness Protection Scheme, and that he's known about this for some time. Sally is not impressed by Kevin's promise to Tommy about 'discretion', and accuses Kevin of not caring for her safety, or for the safety of the girls. [Sally mentions 'trust' - oh yeh?]

The Peacock home, and Ashley tells Fred and Claire that Joshua needs a parent, not a stranger, to look after him. Ashley apologizes to a shaken Claire, but she's redundant, as of now, and he takes little Joshua up for a bath. Fred explains to a doe-eyed Claire that Ashley has had a 'difficult year', and that Ashley needs Joshua even more than Joshua needs him. Claire departs... [Awww - I liked wee Claire - sob!]

In the Rovers, Sally and Kevin discuss the Nelsons' travails [not much in the way of sympathy from Sally]. (Just in case you wondered, the girls are on a sleepover at Lisa's tonight...) Kevin orders a pint of lager, but the keg needs changing; Maria seems not to know how to do that, while an eagle-eyed Bev watches disapprovingly. Vera is overheard by Kevin to criticize the Nelsons, and he jumps to their defense, citing Terry as, well, not exactly a model of respectability. Vera remains, for once, silent... [It's alright, folk, this will not last!]

At the hospital, Angela and her son, Craig, wait and worry. The consultant, William Gerald, arrives and, while Craig is sent on an errand for drinks, Angela learns the truth about Katy and Tommy. Katy is on a drip and is stable, so she ought to be ok to go home tomorrow. Tommy's situation is a bit more serious - the bullet has lodged near an artery - so the outcome is much less certain. Angela asks if Tommy could die. Yes, that is a risk...

Chez Eileen, and Steve is making himself at home [on the infamous blue sofa!] in front of the television, while Jason gets himself ready for a night out. Eileen suggests to the lippy Jason that he take Steve with him, but Jason doesn't seem very keen...

Back at the hospital, Angela visits Tommy, who tells her that he's now prepared to stand up for himself against the Morgans: this must stop, now, whatever it takes. Tommy tells Angela that he feels he's only half a man, but a tearful Angela disagrees.

Back at the Rovers, Bev has changed the keg of lager, which Maria seemed incapable of doing. [Bev smirks!] Norris is telling all and sundry [well, Blanche and Rita] about his imminent stint of being a juror and Blanche reminds him that, if a burglar is caught for one burglary, it's probably the first time he's [she's??] been caught. Kevin, Sally and Martin discuss the Nelsons, Sally pleased that neither she nor the girls were caught up in any crossfire. Bev and Maria exchange a few non-pleasantries.

Jason is having dinner at his Dad's, with his Dad's partner, who has gone to all the trouble of phoning the local Chinese take-away for their meal. [Of course, Eileen has no idea that Jason is dining at his Dad's.]

Gail's house, and Sarah wishes that her Mum would stay away and leave her, Todd and Bethany in the house together for their idyllic existence. However, Sarah mentions Oxford, and Todd pales at the prospect.

In the hospital, Tommy is feeling fine, although he may have to have one of his arms amputated. Craig kisses his Dad and tells him he loves him: Craig hasn't done that for years, Tommy remarks.

Steve and Eileen discuss Jason, Todd and, well, Steve himself. Steve mentions Andy [the brainy one of the family, he says] who's in Barcelona teaching EFL [English as a Foreign Language] and look at him (Steve) - sprawled on a couch in Weatherfield...

...while Jason continues to bemoan his lot in life to his Dad, who promises to see to a job for him, soon, and then he can do what he likes, no matter what Eileen says.

Hospital again, and Angela finds out that the horrible Morgan brother, Andy, has been captured. Angela breaks down and weeps, saying that she can't cope any more. She's tried to be strong, but she's failed. Will they have to move, yet again?

Friday 18 April

Angela has a quick snooze at the hospital, but is wakened with the good news that Tommy's operation has gone well and he ought to be home in a few days. Martin lets Katy know the good news about her Dad, and wonders why she 'forgot' to take her medication. [Oh, sorry, there was a guy waving a gun around at the time, Martin!] Katy sees it all as her fault, though. Craig arrives, beaming, to tell Katy that their Dad is going to be ok - and he's awake; they can see him any time.

Maria waylays Fred, who's on his way to the back room of the Rovers; she doesn't like to complain [as if!] but Shelley's Mum, Bev, is giving her a hard time, so could Fred have a word? Fred reluctantly agrees, and Maria rewards him with a hug... ... and Fred enters the back room, where Shelley and Bev are having a mother/daughter cuppa. Fred tells them that the nanny, Claire, has departed, and Ashley is now in charge of Josh-minding. Bev goes off to do some dishes, and Fred broaches the subject of Bev's 'doing down' Maria [allegedly!] but, of course, he makes it clear that Shelley is the manageress and can handle things how she likes. He adds that he'll be busy today so he won't be around. [Wise Fred - three women v. one mere man? No contest.]

Back at the hospital, Angela visits Tommy and he rues his recklessness in rushing into their house. Angela reckons that someone must have blabbed, but who? Kevin? Hayley? [Nope!] If she finds out who blabbed, Angela will not be responsible for her actions, and weeps.

Back in the Rovers' back room, and Shelley tries diplomacy with her Mum who, naturally, jumps to the right conclusion immediately: that little waste of space [Maria] has been complaining, and the said W.O.S. should have been sacked a long time ago, in Bev's opinion. (Meanwhile, little Maria listens at the door and hears what she wanted to hear...) Bev has obviously overstayed her welcome, and will go, forthwith... [Shelley's diplomacy - "could do better"!]

Chez Gail, and Todd takes his leave of the family home before Gail arrives back from Canada. Todd's parting shot is: "Love you both!"

At the Grimshaws', Jason is being quizzed about getting a job by his Mum, and Jason assures her that he 'has contacts'. [Little does Eileen know that his 'contact' is his Dad...] Lover-boy Todd arrives home with a load of washing, and offers to do it himself.

Back room of the Rovers, where Shelley and Bev have another bonding session, after Bev threatens to leave. All is forgiven! However, Bev will have to go home for some changes of clothes, but she'll be back!

The Nelsons gather around Tommy's bed in hospital and Katy drops the bombshell that it was she who led the gruesome twosome Morgan brothers to their new abode. [They say that 'confession is good for the soul'.] Angela blows a gasket, and accuses her errant daughter of being stupid and, well, stupid. Katy agrees, and is suitably contrite.

Tracy breezes into the Rovers to meet Dev. (She's dressed in a nice new frock [trs dŽcolletŽ, naturellement!] thanks to Dev's credit card gift to her. Let's hope she's worth it, Dev!) Hayley and the girls arrive and express concern for Tommy's recuperation, while Sally expresses concern for herself and her daughters. Maria sees Bev leaving, and is delighted at what she thinks is her departure...

Martin and Katy have a heart-to-heart chat in the hospital, but Katy objects when Martin refers to her as a 'kid'. Martin confesses that he has made mistakes too. Angela arrives, smiling, and yet another mother/daughter bonding session ensues. [Methinks that Martin is getting very, as it were, 'close' to young Katy...]

Gail, Audrey and David arrive back from Canada and Gail [now sporting a very nice blond hairstyle!] asks what has been going on. Sarah tells her that, well, there's been a shooting, but nothing much else. Gail laughs... ... but her laughter is cut short by Vera shouting accusations of her being profligate with the Duckworths' money.

In the hospital, Angela admits to Katy that they've all been stupid - after all, she told Hayley about their plight months ago. More hugs.

In the Rovers, Tracy has a bright idea; she and Dev should invite Shelley and Peter for dinner. Offer offered, and accepted. A box has been opened for contributions to the Nelson fund, but Vera moans that nobody started a collection for them after they were ripped-off by Richard.

Gail is happy to be home, and happy to hear that Sarah has been working hard on her studies. [Gail should know better by this time!]

The Nelsons [minus Tommy, of course] are happy to be home too, when DI Smith arrives to dampen their spirits. Yes, the dreaded Morgan brothers are in custody, charged with attempted murder, and no bail, but the Nelsons will have to move again. Angela tells DI Smith that they're not moving again, and that they're no longer wanting to be on the Witness Protection Scheme - they want to be free. The Nelsons celebrate.

Maria is a happy bunny in the Rovers, even giving Blanche a free drink, when Bev makes her entrance. Maria wants to know what is going on, and Shelley tells her what's what and who's who.

Just as the Nelson family celebrate, the doorbell rings again - Sally. She loses no time in telling Angela to get back to the housing scheme from whence they came, and leave her family in peace, and storms off to her happy, secure, loving family just across the street. [And not a word about 'Happy Easter' from Sally!]

Iain McDougall

Sunday 20 April

The hospital, where Tommy agrees with Angela's decision to stay where they are and not move again. They also agree that the events weren't Katy's fault. [What's this? A married couple on the Street who are happy? Whatever next?] Martin arrives, and Tommy demands to be let home; he's feeling fine, and he's bored doing puzzles and talking to vicars. Martin will run him home after his shift. [A hospital is, as they say, no place for sick people!]

Sally is still in a grump with Kevin about the Nelsons' shenanigans, while Rosie isn't too happy about being limited to a mere half-hour watching tv. Sally accuses Kevin of trying to play happy families. [And I thought that was Sally's forte.]

Chez Gail, Todd looks quite at home playing with little Bethany, but decides he'd best go home for lunch. David objects to there being hymn-singing on the tv and goes off to play. Gail thanks Sarah for being so attentive to her revision. [Does Gail never pause to think?]

Dev's flat, where Tracy is poring over a recipe book, and refuses to go back to bed with Dev. Tracy suggests that he lay the table. [Don't think that's the sort of lay he had in mind, somehow!] Dev heads off to the Rovers for an apŽritif.

Martin drops Tommy home, and Kevin and Martin sing a few lines of Peters' and Lee's ditty "Welcome Home!" [What do you mean - who are Peters and Lee? Tsk tsk - no culture!!] Tommy shouts across to Sally that he's sorry to inform her that he's pulled through, a comment which Kevin finds distasteful and uncalled-for.

In the cafŽ, Steve and Jason compare notes about their respective siblings, Andy and Todd. It transpires that Steve and Jason have much in common, neither having achieved much in life after wasted school years, unlike their brothers. Roy offers Fiz a hot cross bun [why are they so-called, when they're normally cold?] which she declines, but tells an amazed Roy that Hayley knew all along about the Nelsons' secret.

The Nelson house, and Martin joins the family for champagne to celebrate Tommy's return home. Katy thanks Martin for being so good to her, and he makes light of his help. [Katy looks very 'taken' with Martin - mmm.]

In the Rovers, Shelley thinks that two bottles of wine should be taken to Dev's, for their luncheon date. Peter opines that wine should help to dull the pain, just as Dev arrives for his pre-prandial brandy. An awkward bit of small talk ensues between Peter and Dev, each claiming [wrongly] that they're all looking forward to having lunch together. [Peter attempts a joke - has Dev taken the batteries out of the smoke alarm? Weeks ago, counters Dev, weeks ago.]

Martin arrives, post-champers, at Gail's, for lunch, and Gail tells him that she thinks that Sarah's and Todd's relationship is 'going from strength to strength', and that Todd is such a sensible lad. Martin grunts his agreement, as Gail smiles with pride in her daughter.

In the Rovers, Audrey discusses the re-opening of the Salon and her search for a new stylist after the demise of Maxine. Fred cautions Audrey not to canonize Maxine, just yet. The unwilling lunch guests, Shelley and Peter, set off for Dev's, leaving Fred to do some work for a change.

The Grimshaw home, and Eileen goes off to 'do things', leaving her two sons to cope with the dishes. Todd advises Jason to 'clear it' with Mum if he wants to continue seeing his Dad, Tony.

The luncheon party, and Tracy makes some apposite references to swans [the napkins are folded to look like swans] and the fact that they mate for life. [The swans - not the napkins!!] Peter squirms, but Shelley assures Peter that his first marriage was a mistake and that she and Peter will be happy ever after. Shelley and Tracy go off to the kitchen, to do whatever women do in the kitchen together [gossip, probably!] leaving Dev time to wonder out loud about what they're plotting. Peter squirms again, and lights yet another cigarette.

Eileen meets Gail in the Kabin, and tells her that she's glad that Todd is eventually home again after his "love-in". Maybe he'll now get down to some revision. Gail pales at this latest piece of news.

In the Rovers, Audrey says she plans to open the Salon again a week tomorrow. Fred, although no 'follicle oracle', assures her that all her former clients will be beating down her door. [Well, not the clients she treated for Archie, presumably...] Roy tells Hayley that she was right keeping the Nelsons' secret to herself. Gail enters, in high dudgeon, and accuses Martin of not having checked-up on Sarah's cavortings while the family were in Canada. Gail makes a hasty exit, followed by Martin...

... who attempts to comfort a tearful Gail in the street. She has been taken for a fool by her daughter once again, it seems.

Tony arrives at Eileen's house to a rather frosty reception, although his chance of a job for Jason has borne fruit. Eileen doesn't want his help; he's about 19 years too late for that.

Meanwhile, at the luncheon party, much alcohol has been imbibed and various truths are being aired. [In vino veritas, as they say, in these parts.] Tracy reckons that she'll shortly be leading Dev up the aisle, instead of the garden path, while the two men remain quite ignorant of the girls' chat.

Back again at the Websters' and Sally whinges on to Kevin about his lack of trust in her; they're partners, and should be 100% honest with each other. Kevin is sorry, and Sally smiles, eventually.

Sarah and Todd arrive at Gail's to a frosty reception. The two young lovers have been found out - not a lot of revision has been done, and Gail is not pleased that they've been cavorting in her bed, so Gail lays down the law. Sarah is forbidden to see Todd until her last exam has been sat, at the end of June. Sarah thinks her Mum is joking, but she isn't...

Monday 21 April

Part 1:

Eileen is scoffing chocolate (before breakfast, apparently this is a warning signal chez Grimshaw), Todd comments on this to be told that his brother is in contact with his own father. Eileen is none to pleased about this, Tony (the father) hasn't done a hand's turn on his son's behalf until now, Eileen is understandably also none too pleased that Todd knew and said nothing.

Roy is in the cafe furiously grappling with a piece of errant gift wrap when Hayley waltzes in, it's their anniversary apparently. Pressie turns out to be a silver bracelet fashioned into tulips, to remind them of their time in Amsterdam. Can't help wondering WHY she would want to remember her sojourn in Amsterdam under the circumstances! Particularly since she nearly got arrested at the airport on the way back in! She trots off and comes back with a pressie for him as well, he's delighted with himself opening it until he realizes it's a voucher for driving lessons. Hayley wants to buy a car, Roy looks visibly disappointed. Hmmm.

Todd is in the back yard texting Sarah Lou when lo and behold in she comes. (You recollect Gail has forbidden them to see each other, a high piece of foolishness, IMHO). Sarah is adamant they will see each other anyway. So there.

Bev arrives down to brekkie at the Rovers, Fred is "falling over her", Shelly says "you've got a fan there, Mother, I seh, you've got a fan there" in a passable imitation! Bev reckons if you put a gorilla in a blonde wig and a short skirt he'd make a pass at it. She's probably right, but she wouldn't want to be standing next to the gorilla at the time, she'd be decidedly outshone. Betty very cynically announces that she gives him a month before he decides to propose, seeing as Fred is a serial proposer and all. She names out all the women he's proposed to, the ones he's married and the ones who have taken off and left him. Which is all of them in the end.

Eileen is in the base trying to persuade Steve to reinstate Les, He's iffing and butting about it. She's having a whine to him about Jason and his father. Steve is somewhat sympathetic towards Jason, well he would be, wouldn't he? Eileen is afraid of losing her son. And speaking of the devil, Tony arrives on the doorstep to find Jason in his dressing gown half asleep. Tony told him he'd found him a job and they went off for the day together. Ooooooh!

Hayley is singing (untunefully) Tulips From Amsterdam for Karen in the Rovers. I'm sure it was greatly appreciated. Karen is being philosophical about her marriage and says she can't stand the sight of Steve. Hayley quotes "Love Story" and the bit about never having to say sorry. She seemed to be implying Karen should apologies, is she gone mad?

Maria is bemoaning Bev's presence to Betty. So what's new? Peter is telling Shelley about Dev insisting he's not going to propose. Shelley says "Oh that's awful! Poor Tracy" She wouldn't be saying that if she knew the truth. Peter would want to keep his damn gob shut there if you ask me!

Audreh has stuck a sign in the window advertising for a stylist, Gail is skeptical about her chances of success, how often do unemployed trained stylists happen to be strolling down Coronation St? Good question. Audrey is tempted to headhunt Tristan from Maison Renee down the road. Don't go there Audrey! Gail is going back to work tomorrow. She took her time didn't she? As she turns away Todd comes barreling down the road all apologies for having deceived her. Gail is dead set on keeping them apart. Todd gets all masterful (a quite amusing sight really) and insists she listens to him, he points out that Sarah is determined to see him anyway so better she does it out in the open, (fair enough) he even managed to throw in a "with all due respect, Mrs Hillman". Todd thinks she'll be all upset and angry and he announces he's not Aidan Critchley and that he loves Sarah. He says not all men are liars and cheats like Richard, and then promptly apologizes. He swears to make sure she does her homework etc etc etc. Gail relents with a bad grace and invites him rather sourly for his tea at 7.30. If he can tolerate THAT face hers, he must be thoroughly besotted. Plenty of lemons on the menu I'd say.

Intermission (ice cream, trip to the bathroom, kettle on etc.)

Eileen is bemoaning Jason and his father again, Todd (who really is a shining light in this episode) points out that Jason wants to get to know his dad, Eileen says that Tony will only let him down and Todd says he'll have to find that out for himself. That both he and Jason are entitled to know "where they came from" (and this guy wants to go to university???)

Hayley's setting the table in the cafe for a romantic diner a deux, wine glasses and all. Roy says "alcohol?" with a surprised look on his face. He'll stick with the elderflower cordial. What a devil he is!!!

Maria's serving Audrey and Bev butts in, saying that the glass is dirty and sends Maria off for a clean one. Audrey goes into catty mode asking if Shelley is still the manager. Bev gets the claws out as well, pointing out that she has more experience, Audrey says "I bet you do" Tee hee, I smell a good clean catfight in the offing, bring your knitting ladies. Deirdre remarks to Bev that she is making a good impression on Fred, Bev tells her that she's having trouble keeping him at arm's length. Fred's teeth can be seen corroborating this in the background. I think the rest of his face is there as well, not sure though.

Sarah is innocently remarking that she thought David was having his tea elsewhere (why the extra place?) Gail informs her of their impending dinner guest. About how they talked, or rather he talked and she listened (she actually noticed that!) and that he is a good lad. The word respect gets bandied about a fair bit here. Gail trots out the old chestnut about how she needs the truth in future from Sarah Lou, not lies, after all they've been through, yadda yadda. We've heard all THAT before haven't we?

Tony is telling Jason about the job, it's only labouring to start with. For the benefit of the uninformed, that does not mean Jason will be required to give birth to children, it means being a general dogsbody on a construction site. He's advising him how to manage the job, Jason is looking suitably impressed, and delighted to be out having a pint with his father. Todd arrives in, Tony can barely remember his name, apparently Eileen wants to see Jason, who wants to stay in the pub. She's backing a loser there for a start. But eventually he agrees to go.

Bev is giving "manhandling" advice to Deirdre and Karen. Reckons she's only had one significant other and that's her husband. Men fall into groups, biggest group being beer drinkers. Yes, I concur with that one.

Eileen and Jason are having a mother/son heart to heart. He's piddled off that she told Tony to stay away from Jason. I can see both points of view on this one. Words are borrowing words here, apparently Eileen told Jason Tony wanted nothing to do with him, Tony says he proposed and she turned him down. It's getting heated here........................ ! Jason points out that Eileen went through man after man, oooh he calls her a whore!! (Cheeky little plonker!) That results in a well deserved clatter across the chops. He looks all hurt, what did he expect???

Back to Bev's homo-psychology. Deirdre is recapping on what she said, pint drinkers are straightforward, half pint drinkers can't be trusted because they are only willing to go halfway, like Ken (she says) I'd query that one, he could set up his own harem if all his paramours were still alive. Spirit drinkers drink to forget their problems but they have hidden depths. Shelley says, that's just like her Peter. HA! Wine drinkers, on the other hand are caring, considerate and good lovers. (I'm passing the corkscrew to my other half as I type this, hope springs eternal) They dare Bev to get a kiss off the next man who comes in the door, they all wait expectantly, the door opens and in walks................Roy Cropper shopping bag, closely followed by its owner Much giggling and poor Roy doesn't know why. Awwww.

Eileen is waiting anxiously at the bottom of the stairs, Jason comes down, all righteous indignation, suitcases flying in the wind. She apologizes for hitting him. Long overdue really. He reckons they could have had happy families if she hadn't chased all the men away. So she starts crying, tells him to see if his father will put up with him slobbing around, thieving etc. All right I will, and I won't come back!

Another intermission. More ice cream.

Martin, you're going to kill me, I didn't get the second episode, Malachy must have turned off the video. I will commit murder, or better yet, I'll send him to live with Eileen Grimshaw. They deserve each other!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday 23 April

no episode shown

Friday 25 April

There was no Wednesday episode, thanks to football coverage, but a double episode tonight...

Merle's place, and Jason tries to make himself useful by preparing some butties for his Dad and him. Maybe he'll cook a curry for them all later? Merle makes it crystal clear to Tony that Jason is not part of their little mŽnage ˆ deux, and a harassed Tony promises that he'll 'have a word'...

... while a moping Eileen gets on with Jason's ironing at home. [Can't quite imagine Merle doing Jason's ironing, somehow.]

The Rovers' back room, and Bev is slightly under the weather, as is her daughter. Fred bursts in [not sotto voce!], closely followed by Harry, but they're ordered to 'shove off'. They do. Shelley broaches the prickly subject of Maria with her Mum; will Bev apologies to Maria? [Will Les take Holy orders?]

In the cafŽ, Maria makes it clear to Fiz that she'll never go back to the pub. Hayley notices that Roy has got something on his mind, but he keeps stumm... ... until the men of the world, Fred and Harry, appear and Roy asks their advice about women. Harry promises to lend Roy a book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus", which should solve his problem! [The writer orders a copy forthwith...]

In Streetcars, there is tea and sympathy for Eileen from Patrick. She wants Jason back.

The cafŽ again, and Shelley pleads with Maria [her 'best barmaid'] to come back, and Shelley promises to sort out the differences between Bev and Maria. Maria agrees to return. Sally calls in for a couple of butties, and finds Tracy taking the morning off work; Sally is left to inform Peter of this.

In the Rovers, Shelley attempts some diplomacy with her errant Mum and the equally errant Maria. [How long can this 'peace' last?] The factory girls are in a huddle when Angela enters and prepares to join them. However, Angela is told that they have something to do which is private and she leaves, near to tears. (It transpires that, far from shunning Angela, the girls have managed to accumulate £52 for her, but it's a surprise.) Hayley learns about Bev's joke at Roy's expense, and she loses no time in telling a silent [for once] Bev exactly what she thinks of her 'joke' which leads to bullying, humiliation and discrimination. Maria overhears this harangue, and enjoys every moment. [Me too!!]

Jason and his Dad chat during their lunch break at work, and Jason learns that his Grandfather was on the SS Windrush from Jamaica; Jason seems happy to have found a family, at last, but Tony would prefer him to go back to his Mum, which idea doesn't find favour with Jason.

In the cafŽ, Roy eventually admits his little secret to Hayley - he has an admirer. Of course, he wants to let the lady down gently, but Hayley advises him to say nothing.

Back in the Rovers, Bev appears to have regained her composure after Hayley's tongue-lashing, for she prides herself on what she calls her 'dignity'. Peter tells Bev that she chose the wrong bloke. Tracy arrives, full of the joys of her impending matrimony with Dev, and Shelley suggests they go into town to shop for the wedding. [Shelley's wedding, that is.]

Back in the cafŽ, Harry arrives with his recommended book, but Roy tells him that he has no need of its advice; he has decided to do nothing about his admirer. Harry advises caution in doing nothing.

Merle's flat. [The latter word is a noun, not an adjective!] Jason and Tony share a carry-out Chinese meal, as a disgruntled Merle arrives home. [Sweet and sour, perhaps?]

Janice, Fiz and Hayley arrive chez Angela and make the presentation of their whip-round to her. Angela accepts the cash and it's hugs and kisses...

In the Rovers, Audrey hands Gail a cheque to tide her over. Shelley watches, as Tracy and Dev canoodle in the corner. Tracy once more broaches the subject of weddings with Dev, who claims he's not like other men. [What can he mean?]

Hayley quietly informs Roy that Bev's play for him was a joke. Roy looks almost relieved and suggests a game of Scrabble instead of going out to the Rovers. Maybe they should buy the French version? he suggests. [IdŽe gŽniale, Roy!]

Peace has not quite broken out in the Rovers between Bev and Maria, and things come to a head when Bev accuses Maria of not only being incompetent, but lippy. Maria decides that executive action is called for, and throws the pint she has just pulled in the general direction of Bev's face but, ever the professional barmaid, Bev ducks and the brew lands instead right in the face of Shelley, who makes a sudden [and sodden!] decision - Maria is sacked...

Tracy is painting her toe-nails at Dev's flat and casually mentions that she could, if she wanted, upset all the plans for Shelley's and Peter's impending wedding, but she'll keep her secret until the wedding. [Who that then? Shelley? Tracy?] Dev, wisely, goes off to work.

Merle again complains to Tony about Jason's continued presence in her flat, and she insists that Tony go to see Eileen to get shot of his son, right away.

Audrey enters the Salon, to find the place in a mess. However, help is at hand, in the form of Maria, who is at a bit of a loose end after being fired from the pub. [Do they do beer shampoos in Alma's too?]

In the street, Sarah and Candice are off to school, but Sarah waits for Todd and Candice takes the opportunity to go and talk to Audrey in the Salon...

... but Audrey makes it clear that she wants an experienced stylist this time, so neither Maria nor Candice (in spite of their bitchy remarks to each other) are on the short leet. Exeunt Maria and Candice. [Maria and Candice both try to be nice to Audrey, but fail miserably.]

Back room of the Rovers, and Shelley makes it clear that Maria will certainly not be back. Peter nips off to work, and meets Tracy, who asks him what plans he has for his wedding/wife/divorce, but Peter will sort that mess out. [Tracy, of course, has her own agenda, which concerns Dev.]

Dev calls in at Streetcars and gives an unhappy Eileen his received wisdom in the matter of women, marriage et al: no marriage, no kids = happiness.

The factory girls are breaking for lunch and Karen is waylaid by Joe, who invites her out for a quiet repast, but she rejects his advances although she has no plans to get back with Steve. [Get back AT Steve, well, that's another matter.]

Shelley and Tracy have lunch in town together, and they talk of weddings. When pressed, Tracy admits that Dev hasn't actually proposed to her, but it's only a matter of time before he does. Shelley ponders this.

In the Rovers, Vera vents her rage at Emily, concerning Richard's having stolen her life savings. Audrey and Gail arrive, hear the accusations, and tell Vera to leave them alone.

Tony arrives in Streetcars, proverbial cap in hand, and tries to persuade Eileen to plead with Jason to come home to his Mum, but Eileen sees this for what it is - Tony and his paramour, Merle, want rid of Jason, simple as that.

In the Rovers, the girls go back to work, and Karen lingers to have a word with Joe: she has no intention of getting back with Steve, but has no plans to seek pastures new for the moment. Joe will wait. Before leaving, Vera has yet another pot-shot at Gail, and hopes that she (Gail) can live with her conscience. [If Gail could live with Richard, she should be able to live with her conscience, eh?]

Tracy and Shelley arrive back in Weatherfield on the bus and head off for coffee together in the back room of the Rovers, where Tracy confides to Shelley that all she wants is a quickie divorce from her husband (he can have everything) and she'll then move on to her next husband, Dev. Shelley sees trouble ahead.

In the cafŽ, a contrite Bev arrives to apologies to Roy for her 'joke'. Roy accepts her apology and they shake hands. Dev offers Steve the benefit of his wisdom about women - if he wants Karen back, tell her!

In the Rovers' back room, Shelley tells Tracy what Peter had confided to her; in short, Dev has no intention of marrying Tracy. The two concoct a ploy to test Dev's intentions.

Eileen attempts to enlist Todd's help in winning back the affections of Jason, but Todd isn't willing to help his Mum.

Back to the ploy! Shelley phones an unsuspecting Dev, while Tracy listens. Shelley tells Dev that she's heard that he and Tracy are to get engaged soon, so could she help by arranging the engagement party. A stunned Dev asks Shelley if she thinks he has taken leave of his senses; marriage to Tracy? No. Not ever. [End of a beautiful conversation, and a relationship.] What will Tracy do now? She thinks for a moment, and then decides: 'Get even!'

Monday 28 April

Here we go with two episodes wrapped on in one easy to hold bite-sized package, and available in the colour of your choice!!

We start off with Steve waiting at the street corner. He is watching out for Karen to arrive at the factory. Meanwhile Dev arrives at the corner shop, in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, yelling to Steve "don't ask, don't ask". As he looks over to Underworld he sees Karen and Joe having a "friendly frolic" with her.

Tracy meets up with Deirdre. She goes over a smarmingly says that her ex, is now my ex.

One of Sally's interchangeable twins is trying to persuade Kevin and Sally that she needs a mobile phone. She initially says it is for her safety but changes it to wanting to talk to her friends. Sally says she sees her friends all day at school so she would have nothing to talk about.

Steve comes into the StreetCars office and tells Eileen and one of the drivers to clear off because he wants to make a private call and his mobile is not working. He rings Karen to tell her that he wants to see her alone. She says she can't make either the evening or lunchtime. Joe queries her talking personal calls during business hours. She said it was nothing important.

Audrey is anticipating the 9am opening of the salon. After the past few months she hopes things will be quieter and more relaxed. She thinks it is a perfect opportunity to spare a thought for Maxine. Shortly there is banging on the door as the first customers arrive.

Janice advises Karen that Steve can wait. Steve is rushing to get to the pub, but his car has a puncture and there is no spare wheel.

Les tells Kirk that he once had a bad experience with hypnosis. Kirk is urging him to remember if there were any witnesses to the police incident. Les does recall there was a dog around and Kirk suggests to Les it maybe worth trying to find the owner, who may have seen something.

Karen has lunch in the pub with Joe.

Deirdre comes into the corner shop and slaps Dev. She doesn't know what he did, but thinks he must deserve it. She says she knew it was coming even if Tracy or Dev didn't realize it at the time.

Steve arrives at the pub, only to be told that Karen has been and gone. Janice and Fizz tell him she is working late and then going out with Joe.

Kirk comes to the pub with lots of of cut up photos of dogs. He explains to Les that he can make up a "photofit" of the dog that looks the one that he saw.

Dev comes in to the Rovers and sees Peter and Shelley. He is very annoyed at them talking to Tracy.

Les makes up a picture of a Jack Russell dog.

Audrey is very busy in the salon. Candice drops in, but Audrey is too busy to talk to her. Blanche complains that she has not had a cup of tea. Audrey asks Maria to make a cup, even though she has backlog of customers.

Angela comes into the pub. She has a chat with Kevin and a forced conversation with Sally. She tells them that she likes it so much around Weatherfield that she won't be going back to Sheffield.

Tony and his floozy Merle come into the pub with Jason.

Audrey puts her feet up after a hard day at the salon. There is a knock at the door; Archie opens it. It is Candice who asks Audrey for another work placement. Audrey agrees to take her on, but says she may regret it when she realizes how much work there is.

Dev is getting drunk and reveals to Steve that he slept with Deirdre. Steve cannot believe it.

Eileen comes into the pub. Jason doesn't want to talk to her. Deirdre tells Tracy she slapped Dev. Tracy would rather that Deirdre hadn't hit him. Deirdre tells her that she warned what he is really like, and uses the immortal words "I told you so".

Dev tells Steve that he needs a holiday. Steve is more interested in trying to prevent Karen going out with Joe. He turns up at Underworld. Karen says she doesn't want any trouble. He agrees that the just need to talk. Joe buts in, but Steve hounds him down.

Steve begs for forgiveness from Sharon.

Steve and Joe start shoving each other. Mike wants to close. Steve says he is not going to go without his wife.

Tracy and Merle discuss Jason. Merle says that Jason shows no sign of leaving.

Kirk is out looking for a dog. Spots a young girl and asks her about the dog in the photo when a policeman detains him. He is in a red-light area and she was obviously a decoy.

Steve tells Karen she can make his life a misery if she wants. However he will be 10 times more miserable without her.

Bev is discussing with Deirdre about the colours she should wear for the wedding. Bev thinks green would be the right colour.

Dev tries to persuade Tracy to come home. She is told she can have Gran's room, much to Blanche's annoyance.

Kirk explains to the police officer that he was trying to talk to the girl about the dog.

Joe and Mike go into the office and break off Karen and Steve . Karen tells Steve to go back to the flat and wait. She says she wants two minutes alone with Joe. Joe goes into the office to put his "case".

Tony tells Jason that they are "solid". He points out that his mother is looking very glum. Tony says he will not be disappointed when Jason moves out. He then says that that he and Merle are going out/

Joe is trying to persuade Karen that she should choose him. She is getting very confused with mixed feelings. She tells him that she is gong to leave to go back to her husband. Joe reminds her the time she left him in the hotel.

Vera tells Audrey that she she wouldn't come back to her salon. She believes the whole family were involved with Richard. Audrey then offers her half price cut and colour. Vera relents!

Joe is piling on the pressure to Karen. Steve is rattling around in the flat being all alone.

Eileen tells Jason that she has rented his bed to Steve he is quite annoyed. Then she tells him she was joking.

Kirk tells Les that he will lie for him and say that he was a witness.

Karen tries to leave tries to leave, but Joe is holding her back. Eventually Steve's temper gets the better of him and rings her mobile. She thinks that he doesn't trust her. He threatens that if she is not home within 5 minutes ... and Karen switches off her phone.

Deirdre and Blanche tell Ken what happened with Tracy and Dev and how she ripped up his clothes. Dev is pleased.

Steve goes round to Underworld and bangs on the door, while Joe and Karen "enjoy" each other's company.
