Friday 1 November

The Barlow household, and Deirdre regales Ken with an episode from her past when, with another pupil, she played truant and her pal was caught shop-lifting. Deirdre received a thrashing with a stick and she's never done that again - crime and punishment! Ken bites on his toast and remains impassive.

In the cafe, Blanche is telling Emily all about how kids are out of control now and how teachers are all young and wet behind the ears, not like in her day when corporal punishment was the norm. [Why do I have the impression that Blanche would favour CAPITAL punishment?] Roy continues to think about the possibility of buying the shop next door and extending the cafe, which Hayley is completely against. Kirk arrives and informs Emily that he's "found one", and he and Emily go off into a huddle in the corner, just out of earshot of a curious Blanche. (Replacement for the little shi tzu, Mr Woo. I checked the spelling!!)

Eileen is stunned to hear that Todd is considering not going to Oxford, but has plans for maybe Manchester University instead, or a job...

Chez Hillman. Gail has been talking to Audrey on the phone, discussing fireworks for November 5, and Richard tells Gail that his deals are going well, so Gail deserves a treat - a meal out tonight. He'll ask Audrey to child-mind. Gail smiles. Richard smiles. [A bad sign!]

Ken has just been speaking to his union rep., Jack Martin, who thinks Ken has a case against Ade since he's been the victim of extreme provocation by this boy. Deirdre pleads with Ken to stop being a martyr and to fight for his job, but Ken reckons he'll be able to land another job.

Kirk collars Archie in the street to ask him for his professional advice: do dead bodies fart? Archie does admit that corpses do have to get rid of any build-up of gas. Archie thinks that Kirk is interested in becoming an undertaker. [No, I don't know why Kirk wanted to know that either!] Richard tells Archie that he and Gail are going for a meal tonight, Audrey child-minding. Archie bravely volunteers his services [not his professional services!!] if Audrey can't manage... Richard meets Audrey and asks her if, when she's buying fireworks for the kids, could she buy some rockets and he'll get some Catherine wheels. [Oops - Richard 'forgets' to ask Audrey to child-mind...] Kirk and Norris are off to Skipton to collect the new Mr Woo, priced at 450 pounds.

The Barlow home, and Deirdre apologises to Ken for hassling him earlier. Ken tells her that he does not believe in violence, and Deirdre hassles him once more with some hypothetical situations - what if...? Ken is sticking to his principles, for those make him the man he is. Deirdre tells him to act like a man, and she storms out.

At the hospital, Sarah is making steady progress, Candice keeping her company. Todd arrives and Sarah suggests to Candice that she go. She goes, but not before guzzling some of the grapes which Todd had brought for Sarah. Sarah's dressing is coming off today, and she wonders what her face will be like, thanks to Ade.

In the cafe, Roy returns from the bank with the news that their finances can't quite run to buying the shop next door, but a loan is possible and, with changes to their 'operational style' (Hayley giving up working for Mike and working in the cafe instead) they could then get rid of Vera and Toyah. [Hayley's turn to storm out.]

Chez Sally, and Kevin has bought a nice bike for Sophie's birthday. Sally is pleased.

Ken has had time to muse on his future and informs Deirdre that he will not resign for, if he did, then the bully, Ade, would win. [Good on ya, Ken!] He'll withdraw his resignation and accept suspension on full pay. Deirdre is pleased.

The Kabin. Archie meets Audrey, who is buying sweets, and he assumes that they're for the kids. Is she not child-minding tonight? Audrey says she isn't - she's going home to cosset herself. [The plot thins - what is the dastardly Richard up to this time?] Norris arrives with a rather large box and introduces Emily to the new Mr Woo.

Sally and Kevin share a glass or three of wine and a cosy chat, reminiscing about presents he's given her and she's given him over the years. Kevin still treasures the watch Sally gave him, with its inscription "Nothing compares to you". Kevin goes to put the kettle on. Sally is pleased.

Back at the hospital, and Todd wonders if Sarah, while in her coma, knew what was going on around her and what was being said to her. The hapless Todd goes on to remind Sarah that what he said still applies - she's the most beautiful girl he's ever known, he loves her and can't stop loving her. They share a tender kiss. Todd is pleased.

Blanche and Deirdre are watching an old Barbara Stanwyck film on tv when Ken bursts in to tell Deirdre to come upstairs right away. [Ooooh, Ken!] He's found a cheap holiday for them both in Gran Canaria via the Internet, and they leave tomorrow. Deirdre is pleased. Blanche is not.

In the street, Audrey and Archie come out of the Rovers and they meet an angry Gail, who reminds her Mum that she was to child-mind for them tonight. Audrey protests that she knows nothing about that, but Richard assures her that, just maybe, he's mistaken. Audrey offers to look after the children now, but Gail says it's too late, and storms off, leaving Audrey slightly confused, but still convinced that Richard didn't mention anything that morning about child-minding. Richard is pleased. Gail is not.

Back at the hospital, Todd bares his soul. He doesn't want university: he wants something else - Sarah. He can leave school now and get a half-decent job. Sarah reminds him that she's only 15 and that he's only 17, and goes on to tell him that, although he's special to her, she doesn't want a boyfriend in her life. All she wants, now that she's cheated death, is to be with Bethany.

Sunday 3 November

It is almost Guy Fawkes night. There are lots of bangs and flashes in the streets .... except in Coronation Street!

Richard is making breakfast for Gail. She is upset that she hasn't shown enough concern for Audrey.

Sally reads Kevin's horoscope and it talks about not looking back. Sophie comes into the room and tells them that she wants a bike for her birthday. They look at each other knowingly.

Todd tells his mother (Eileen) that he told Sarah his true feelings about her. She responded that she wasn't interested. Eileen sympathises but is really pleased because she would rather he concentrated on his studies.

Norris comes back to the Kabin having walked Mr Woo 2. Emily warns him not to get too attached to the dog because Rita is due back tomorrow. They hope Rita doesn't notice that the dog has been changed.

Hayley tells Janice and Fizz about Roy's plans to extend the cafe. They say it would be awful if she left Underworld.

Eileen opens the door as Gail is leaving for the hospital. She calls to Eileen to ask Todd if he wants a lift. Eileen answers no, and says the further away Sarah is from Todd the better. Gail and Richard look at each other surprised.

Sarah tells Candice that she is not going to get into a mess over a fella ever again. (Famous last words!)

Jason tells Todd not to throw everything away but concentrate his studies into going to Oxbridge, (I presume everybody knows this is an amalgamation of the two prestige universities, Oxford and Cambridge).

Hayley asks Curly if there is anything he could do to stop the arcade. He says it is out of his hands, but the planning permission maybe turned down.

Hayley is talking to Roy. She says she doesn't want to give up working at Underworlds to work in the cafe full time. She gives Roy an ultimatum.

Richard see Audrey. She explains she is depressed about the various things that have happened recently. She is convinced someone is getting into her house. She is going to have the locks changed. Richard looks annoyed.

Eileen surprised to see Todd working. She thought he had given up the idea of going to Oxbridge.

Audrey tells Richard someone is getting into her house. Richard offers to change the locks for her. She says to do the job properly she wants a professional locksmith.

Curly tells Emma that getting a baby-sitter is difficult for one child. Getting two would be a problem.

Sally and Kevin join Curly and Emma at the Rovers. Emma confides in Sally and Curly with Kevin the problems they are having about having another child. Kevin explains that he and Sally are not sleeping together.

The locksmith fits the locks at Audrey's house. He is about to give Richard the keys when Audrey walks in.

Roy tells Hayley that he owes her an apology. He says it wasn't right to expect her to give up her job. He agrees he was over optimistic about the extension.

Sally kisses Kevin and invites him to bed. He is suspicious and says he doesn't want to be just good friends.

Audrey goes round to see Gail. She also apologises to Richard for being ratty. She gives Gail a spare set of keys, and says she at last feels safe in her own house. Richard looks smug.

Wednesday 6 November

Can I please welcome for the first time to this list Willma our newest reporter. Please give her a lot of encouragement!

**************

We start in the Webster's around the dining table, Sally and Kevin have just told them that they are getting married again, and the girls are dead excited. Sally want's to keep this news to themselves for a while, Kevin say's "ok, but you won't stop me smiling all day"

Peter is so upset that Shelly can't go with him on his weekend at the races, but she tells him that she can't as she has to work, but to go and enjoy himself, this took a lot of persuasion....not, as we all know what he is up to............... Peter teases Vikram about the money he lost last night on the dogs and Vikram tells him he won, Peter tells him he knows he didn't as he was there .

Maria bumps into Vik and tells him not to take any notice of Fizz and Toyah, she knows he let her down but is prepared to forgive him and that he can take her out again" go wash yer hair" he tells her.

Peter phones Lucy and tells her that he has booked the hotel, its expensive so it should be lovely.

Gail and Richard go and pick up Sarah from the hospital, but the doctor warns she has to take it easy for a while.

Vik is still loosing and Peter pulls the plug on his credit, warns him that he wants his money back. Vik say's" so what is it, a few hundred" Peter tells him "you owe me 2 grand, Vik is a little taken back at this and goes off to see his cousin Dev for a loan. Dev asks him "how much do you want, think of a number". Dev then tells him to grow up and engage his brain, if he borrows from him to pay Peter back, he then owes him, so Vik say's that it is better to owe Dev as he won't have to pay it back so quick. But Dev refuses as he knows that Vik will only go and waste it gambling again, Vik says he wouldn't, but Dev isn't going to give him the chance.

Audrey has offered to cook the family a lovely roast beef and Yorkshire pudding meal. when she sees Richard she tells him that she has to go and do a dead clients hair first, but she will put the timer on the cooker before she goes and everything should be nearly ready for when she gets back. So...this is fuel to the fire for Richard, he sets off to Audrey's. He arrives whilst chatting on his mobile, telling someone that he is about to come into a substantial amount of money, then he says "oh dear Audrey, you seemed to have switched the timer off by mistake"....... click, and he leaves smirking.

Sally gets a phone call at the bookies from the hotel that Peter will be staying in, she can't get hold of him. So when she sees Shelly, she tells her that they are looking for him as they want to know if he will be dining in the restaurant as they are getting fully booked, Shelly says knowing Peter, a bag of crisps and a bevy will do him. Sally is shocked at this and say's "oh, are you not going with him" then, Shelly tells her "no, she isn't, as she has to work, why". Sally then tells her that its just that they said the booking was for Mr. Barlow and guest" she then tells Shelly that she better sort it out as Peter will be upset that she has to work, Shelly say's "yeah, I will" with a puzzled look on her face.

Everyone is at Audrey's for there dinner, all are happy to see Sarah home and even David has to agree it is the happiest day of his life. Sarah and David jokingly start to bicker and Audrey say's isn't it lovely to see the young ones bickering again. Gail tells her to go and see to the dinner, then Audrey realises that she can't smell the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen, tells Richard to open the bottle of wine while she goes to check on it. cue Richards smirk.

Shelly speaks to the hotel on the phone and informs them that she is Peters partner and she isn't going with him, so he will be on his own, but they will have to contact him for the details.

Eileen is in the shop getting some chocolate, but then remembers that she isn't having anymore". are you on a health plan" asks Rita," no, it's just that I'm saving up for when Todd goes to Uni.". she then turns and sees Rosie and Sophie and say's it will you two next going off to Uni.," no, it won't say's Sophie, we are going to be bridesmaids", "bridesmaids" declares Eileen," who for"," mummy and daddy, there getting married again" the girls inform Rita and Eileen. "MARRIED". Rita is obviously in shock at this news, but Eileen knew, but keeps up the pretence. "when did all this come about" asks Eileen," last night" say the girls, Eileen replies" brilliant news that, eh!", Rita say's yes, but her face say's it all, she is not so happy as the others.

Sally and Kevin go into the Rovers for a quiet drink, Curly, Martin and Rita are all there, Martin orders some drinks to celebrate, asks how they knew, Martin says ",you can't keep gossip like that quiet, not round here anyway". They all raise their glasses and say congratulations, all are pleased for them, but Rita, she has a very different face, and Sally knows why......................

Friday 8 November

The Hillman household, and Gail is worrying about her Mum going senile, saying that things don't make sense. Richard is of the opinion that, well, things add up, and tenderly comforts Gail. David appears, quietly, and asks them not to pretend to him that things are alright when they aren't - he is big enough to face up to what is going on.

Shelley (who knows that Peter has a double room booked at the hotel) is packing his bag for his weekend in Chepstow, and Peter assures her that he'll be in bed by ten o'clock each night most likely. [Ah, but with whom, Shelley wonders?]

An enraged Vik is giving Tyrone a hard time at the garage about his taxi not being fixed properly. Kevin leaves Tyrone in charge while he goes off with Sally to arrange their wedding. [Is this going to be a happy marriage this time round? Personally, I'll not buy any confetti just yet...] Audrey and Rita stroll along the street, and Audrey confides that she has an appointment with the doctor. Steve passes the garage, and Tyrone complains to him about Vik's attitude towards him.

Hillmans' again, and Martin has popped in to see Sarah and bring her sweets. He and Gail share a cuppa and discuss the imminent nuptials of Kevin and Sally - maybe they've both found love again?

The office of Streetcars, where Eileen and Todd are waiting for their taxi to take them to the station en route to Oxford. Vik is on the radio, threatening all and sundry with P45s if they don't pull their weight, and Steve wonders why Vik is in such a foul mood.

In the Rovers, Shelley confides in Sunita that she hasn't told Peter about her knowing about the double room. Sunita pleads with her to ask Peter about it. Shelley serves drinks wrongly to Audrey, and Rita points out to Audrey that even young people can make mistakes, and Archie gets Shelley to smile by remarking that his customers never complain. Audrey tells Rita that she has an appointment with the doctor a week on Wednesday.

Dev sidles up to Steve in the street and warns him to keep his eye on Vik, for he's spending too much time (and money) in the betting shop. A car draws up, and it's Sally and Kevin back from the Registry Office, where they've just been to book their wedding. Both look happy, and share a kiss.

In Peter's betting shop, Vik is asking for more credit, which Peter refuses. He instructs Sally that Vik has to place any bet with cash, and any winnings have to towards clearing his debt. Sally mentions to Peter about the hotel phoning about his double room, and she adds that Shelley knows about the phone call. Peter's face changes colour to an ashen grey. [Has the cheating scumbag been rumbled?] Thinking quickly, Peter explains to Sally that it's a surprise for Shelley and he hurries off to 'sort a few things out'.

In the Rovers, Harry tries to cheer Shelley up, but Shelley is convinced that Peter has another woman. Dev enters and sees Vik poring over the racing pages of the paper. Dev advises Vik to go easy with his gambling, but Vik warns him not to interfere: after all, he refuses to help. Peter appears and has a surprise for Shelley. She has the weekend off, with Fred's blessing, and he has booked a double room for them in Chepstow. Harry will help out in her absence. A relieved Shelley rushes off to pack, while Peter breathes a sigh. [Peter has once again demonstrated that, if you can fake sincerity, you can fake anything.]

The Hillmans' yet again, and the topic is Audrey's apparent drift into senility, which discussion is interrupted by Audrey's arrival. While Audrey and Gail talk, the wily Richard tries to slip something into Audrey's handbag but is seen by Gail, who wonders what he's doing. Richard explains to Gail that she had left her handbag open and that he was closing it for her. [Phew!]

Peter arrives in the back room of the Rovers, Peter explains Shelley's absence to Fred and pleads with Fred to let Harry cover Shelley's shifts. Fred agrees, rather reluctantly. [Peter fights to live another day.]

Chez Hillman. While Gail and Audrey chat, Richard manages to retrieve Audrey's purse from her coat pocket and slips a piece of paper into it, unseen this time... [You can't keep a bad man down, as they say.]

Shelley is doing some ironing in the flat for her 'surprise' weekend, when Peter arrives. Shelley confesses to him that she imagined his having another woman. Peter feigns astonishment that she could ever think such a thing, before hurrying off to 'see to a few things'.

In the Kabin, Sally is buying sweets for Rosie and Sophie, who are having a sleepover at a pal's house. The girls leave, and Rita wishes Sally all the best for her impending re-marriage - never mind what some people may say. [Oops, that was a barb in the tail, Rita!]

Peter arrives chez Lucy, who is all packed for her dirty weekend, and explains why their trip is off. Of course, Lucy forgives him, and then adds that, well, as things are, an old boyfriend is back in town so she'll not be at such a loose end after all. [Oh dear - Peter looks quite disappointed.]

In the Rovers, Kevin announces to Martin and Tyrone that Sally and he are getting married within a month and, naturally, Tyrone suspects Sally is preggers. No. Audrey and Richard enter and she insists on paying for the drinks. When she opens her purse, she finds a ticket for the dry-cleaner's, for a dress, which she immediately realises must be 'the' dress that she 'lost' recently, although she has no recollection of having been to the dry-cleaner's. [A new use of the phrase 'being taken to the cleaners', I think!!] A shocked Audrey fails to notice a smirk on Richard's face...

Sunday 10 November

Good evening once again.

We begin with Archie round at Audrey's place. He is comforting her before her doctor's appointment. He suggests that she cancels her appointments for the day. He will come with her to the surgery. She says she will, but there is one woman she has to do for Archie, who for obvious reasons cannot wait!

Eileen is unable to contact Vik on the radio. Steve asks her if she has noticed anything unusual about him lately. She replies where should she start.

Audrey and Archie go to the dry cleaners. She looks at the dress that she collects and it is the one that went missing a few days ago. She asks the dozy shop girl if she remembers her (Audrey) coming in with the dress. Because the girl is more interested in her navel where she has had a button inserted, she doesn't understand Audrey.

Ashley is in the pub. Fred remarks that he is starting early, but he says Maxine is out shopping for a birthday present.

Mike goes over the divorce papers with Doreen. Mike invites her out to dinner that evening.

Vik returns to the cab office.

Audrey and Archie are in the waiting room outside the doctor's surgery. Audrey asks Archie to come in with her. Just as she is called in, Archie's mobile phone rings.

Steve tells Vik there is a query about money going into the account. Vik gets very annoyed and insists he paid in all the money.

The doctor gives Audrey some simple tests, eg who is the British Prime Minister, count backwards from 100. She tells Audrey there seems to be nothing wrong with her short term memory. Audrey even answers a question the doctor forgot she asked! She says she will refer her to a specialist doctor (psychiatrist) as a precautionary measure. However the doctor feels sure Audrey is ok. Audrey is not convinced in herself.

Audrey tells Gail about her visit to the doctor. Gail says she would have come if she had only mentioned it. Audrey says it was ok, because Archie had come along. Audrey thinks it will be about three weeks before she is seen. Gail thinks it is too long for this to be hanging over her.

In the pub Archie and Rita try to convince Audrey that she is ok. Fred joins in and says she is ok, he tells her that we all do daft things from time to time. Rita mistakenly talks about Anthony's wife who had altseimers.

Vik gets very annoyed with Dev. He seems to be poking his nose into his business.

Audrey tells Gail that when Alma died she still had her mind. Richard comes over and asks if there is anything he can do to help. Audrey says she is ok. Audrey then tells Gail that she has a good man, and she should keep hold of him. Some women, she says, would die for someone like him!

Mike tells Doreen over dinner that the "right man" will come along for her

Dev warns Steve, in the pub, to watch out for Vik.

As Mike and Doreen leave the restaurants she spots an ex-neighbour of hers, from when she was married. Mike thinks it might not be a good idea for her ex-husband to see them together.

Rita sees Richard in the pub. She asks him where Audrey is. She thinks she might have upset her. Richard goes and says he is going to see if she is at home.

When Doreen tells Maxine that she has had dinner with Mike, Maxine is a little suspicious. She then remembers the neighbour she saw in the restaurant is a member of Neighbourhood Watch.

Gail tells Richard that she has arranged for Audrey to have an appointment on Tuesday.

Monday 11 November

The Hillmans' household, and Gail suggests to Richard that they take her Mum out, and Richard agrees, for he's worried about Audrey too. David is quick to seize on the phrase 'take her out' and, with a wink at Richard, pretends to shoot an imaginary Audrey, mafia-style.

In the Corner Shop, Shelley is waxing lyrical about her wonderful weekend at Chepstow with the (cheating) Peter, who treated her like a princess. [Exactly!] Curly asks Sunita if she can babysit for Emma and him tonight, and she smilingly agrees.

Peter, meanwhile, is on the phone to Lucy, with his version of the weekend. Lucy can see him tonight, but not before ten o'clock.

Chez Watts, and Emma informs Curly that she can't go out with him tonight, for she's going to some colleague's fortieth birthday party - all part of the job, she says.

In the Rovers, dizzy Doreen tells a confused Mike that she's already phoned Derek, her estranged adulterous husband, to pre-empt his hearing of their cosy dinner last night from the neighbours whom she saw in the restaurant. Mike points out to Doreen that, if she hadn't blabbed to Derek, he would never have known about it.

Hillmans' again, and Audrey has phoned to say that Archie will pick her up, while a serious-looking Richard tells Gail to expect the worst when Audrey sees the specialist tomorrow.

Rovers, and Mike leaves, declining another drink from Doreen. Peter enters, to tell Shelley, still on cloud number nine, that he has to work late. Martin remarks, seeing Gail and Richard sitting with Audrey and Archie, that when he was married to her, they hardly ever were out together... ... while the quartet above discuss Audrey's imminent visit to the specialist. Richard offers to run Audrey home whenever she's ready.

The Watts home, and Sunita arrives for her babysitting duties, just as Emma is off out. Never mind, Curly scoots off to the Rovers on his own, leaving Sunita in charge.

The Rovers, and the ever-attentive Richard gets a round of drinks in, making sure it's a double for Audrey. Curly slurps his beer, while listening to Peter giving his opinion on women's infidelity - the women do it, so why should we men feel guilty? Curly listens, and thinks of Emma, out on the tiles on her own. Archie has booked a taxi for Audrey, so Richard won't have to drive her home. Fred sits down and proposes a toast to Audrey, while Richard sits impassively by...

The Hillmans are now home, and Gail wonders why Richard seems so sullen. Richard explains that he's just 'hyped-up' about Audrey. Gail suggests an 'early night', but Richard tells her to go up to bed and he'll follow later. 'Are you keeping anything from me?' Gail asks. [I refuse to supply the obvious riposte!] Richard consults his watch, as Gail goes off to bed.

Archie walks a tipsy Audrey from the taxi to her door and, once she's safely inside, he asks Steve to take him back to the Rovers for a much-needed drink.

Peter arrives at Lucy's, only to find a friend of hers, Dan Kelly, there, with whom she has spent some time over the weekend. Peter is obviously discomfited by the presence of Dan, but he accepts a drink, while Lucy and Dan talk about old times.

Chez Audrey. She starts heating some milk on the gas stove, but decides to go to bed instead, turning off the gas and the lights before she goes upstairs.

In the Rovers, Fred and Rita agree that there's nothing much wrong with Audrey - she's just feeling run-down, that's all. Curly bends Martin's ear about Emma's having a full-time job and, well, she's always tired.

Lucy's flat, and Peter feels quite uncomfortable being there, with Lucy and Dan, not what he had in mind at all.

Richard drives to Audrey's house and, Audrey being in bed sound asleep, he lets himself in.

Emma arrives home unexpectedly early, and Curly attempts to 'talk' to her, but Emma isn't ready to talk, especially when they've both been drinking.

Richard skulks around Audrey's kitchen, while she's zonked-out in bed, and carefully removes the battery from the smoke alarm. [I'm beginning not to trust Richard!]

Back at Lucy's, Dan has just left and, while Lucy states that he's just a friend, Peter is so obviously jealous that they exchange a few words, but then agree to start again, as though Dan hadn't been there. [Been where?]

Richard lights the gas under the pan of milk, and leaves Audrey to her fate...

The Rovers, and Archie, Fred and Rita, blissfully unaware of what is happening chez Audrey, all feel that she has 'nowt to worry about'...

...just as the milk pan overheats and starts a fire in the kitchen at Audrey's, while she sleeps in her bed upstairs.

Now to Part 2 of this evening's dramatic episodes...

While Audrey sleeps soundly, the fire in the kitchen takes hold and smoke billows around the house.

Richard arrives home after his dastardly deed and looks out of the window, seemingly pleased with his night's arson, while his wife sleeps soundly in their bed.

In the Rovers, a few stragglers are left, including Archie. Steve enters and hands Archie Audrey's spectacles which she must have dropped in his taxi. Archie tries to phone Audrey, but he can't get connected and eventually persuades Steve to run him back to Audrey's to deliver the specs, which she'll need in the morning.

The Watts domicile. Emma is tired , as always, and Curly is having yet another can of beer. He tells Emma that he feels 'brain limp' from spending every day with wee Ben, while he accuses Emma of playing Cagney and Lacey every day.

Back at Audrey's, where she's still sleeping soundly as the fire gets ever worse.

Gail comes downstairs to find Richard still up. He explains that he must have dropped off to sleep on the sofa, and the hapless Gail concludes that Richard is worrying about her Mum. Richard tries to reassure Gail that Audrey will be fine. [Apart from being burned to a cinder, of course!]

Audrey wakes up, coughing, and stumbles to the door of her bedroom, which she opens, only to be faced with the house full of smoke. She trips, and falls down the stairs in the darkness.

Chez Lucy, and Peter is not in the mood for making love at the moment; he is overcome with jealousy. Lucy suggests that, if he feels that way, they should stop seeing each other, but Peter seems to want both Shelley and Lucy. [Not, maybe, in that order...]

Steve and Archie arrive at Audrey's house, which is visibly ablaze downstairs. Steve jumps from the taxi and runs to the front door, while shouting to Archie to phone the Fire Brigade. Steve kicks in the front door and enters the smoke-filled house...

... while Richard lies awake in his bed (time: 23h03) with Gail, asleep, at his side.

Steve tries to find his bearings in the smoke and heat, finds an unconscious Audrey sprawled on the floor at the bottom of the stairs and drags her from the stricken house, just as the Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance arrive. Audrey and Steve are taken to hospital.

Back at Lucy's flat, she accuses Peter of being too possessive and that, if she wants to sleep with anyone, she can, and will. She is not going to hang around waiting for Peter to phone her when he fancies a bit on the side. Peter thanks her for her observation, and leaves for home.

The doorbell rings chez Hillman, and the dreaded Richard opens the door to find Archie, with sad news to relate. Audrey is in hospital, but she's still alive, he relates, and Richard is at pains to find out from Archie just how bad Audrey is. Gail and Richard rush off to get dressed to go to the hospital. Archie will stay with Sarah, David and Bethany in the meantime.

Chez Watts yet again. Emma has been in bed for a while, during which time Curly has had a few more cans of lager, and comes downstairs to talk, about having another baby mainly. They start off rowing, but then decide they should talk later, about their respective roles, they hug and go off to bed. [Perchance to sleep?]

Gail and Richard rush into the hospital, to be told that Audrey is in Intensive Care and sedated, but she's alive! Richard comforts Gail and tells her, tenderly, that 'it'll all work out for the best, for all of us'.

Archie talks to Sarah and David, over mugs of hot chocolate, and tells them that their Gran is a tough old bird, and a fighter. The kids ask Archie how the fire could have started, but Archie doesn't know.

Back at the hospital, Steve arrives back from Accident and Emergency to the grateful, and tearful, thanks of Gail, who hails him as a hero for rescuing her Mum. A nurse arrives, and says that Gail can see her Mum for a few moments, while Richard flies into a rage, demanding to know the truth. [Oh yeh?] The nurse tells them not to be unduly alarmed, and sees his outburst as an indication of his concern...

Peter arrives home, where Shelley is waiting up for him, and he explains his lateness by having had a flat tyre. Peter's only worry is that he has no fags left, but Shelley tells him that there's a packet in the drawer and wants him to come to bed. Peter seems to prefer having a fag, however...

Back in the hospital, Gail and her evil husband are at Audrey's bedside, where she's hooked-up to all sorts of machines. The doctor tells them that, probably, the only reason she's still alive is the fact that she fell downstairs and therefore was below the level of most of the smoke, which would have killed her. The doctor comments: 'She is a very lucky woman.' Richard's response closes this episode, when he muses: 'Isn't she just!'

Wednesday 13 November

Archie and Richard are in the cafe, Vera congratulates him on what he did for Audrey and tells Richard that she hopes he is paying for Archie's meal, Archie tells her no, Richard say's she is right and to put his money away, it's the least he can do (i can think of many other things) "hey, there's not many son in laws that would do that is there" she say's, people are very happy that Audrey is o.k, but Richard does not think they have cause for celebration just yet, and that he thinks this is just the beginning, as they cannot stop her from draping her washing over the fire, leaving a pan on, and they can put in as many smoke alarms as they like, but it isn't going to stop her from taking out her batteries. "it's not as bad as that" Archie tells him. "did you set fire to her house" asks Richard, and Archie replies that he didn't, "no, Audrey did," says Richard. "now we don't know that" replies an angry Archie. Richard then tells Archie, maybe not yet but she is a danger to herself.( He nearly has us believing him).

Martin comes into the cafe and after ordering a ham and salad barm sits down with Archie and Richard (hahaha, the good, the bad and the ugly). Martin asks after Audrey and Archie tells him she is coming home today, martin then asks them if they are ready for the long haul, Richard asks him what he means by this, he then reminds him about his house fire, "i was looking at two weeks tops, but it was near three months when i moved back in, and that was just smoke damage" .

The new family have just arrived outside dr. I'll be you free fertility drug ramsdens old home, the daughter is not happy with it and thinks coronation street might be a dump. Dad tells everyone to get out of the car, as he and mum go to the boot to collect their suitcases, the kids holler as they are locked in the car, dad asks mum if they could do a runner, mum is not impressed at this. (mum and dad were in where the heart is, he was Simon goddard and she was the original Cheryl, she was also in fat friends) as the new family enter there new home, Vera and blanche say hello and ask if they are settling in, mum rushes them inside and slams the door leaving Vera and blanche gob smacked. (if this family can leave blanche quiet, they are going to be a welcome sight for the street) "hey, great back garden" say's dad, "is thee" replies a delighted mum. "oh, great, we can have a barbie for us tea" moans the daughter as she goes upstairs, "do you think we can really live here" say's mum, "do we have much choice " asks dad and they both look at each other.(mmm, what is their little secret, and why did they move in before viewing the house, it's as if someone made them move here) at that moment the girl starts to shout that her little brother has bagged the biggest bedroom without her even getting to look at them. Gail goes to visit Audrey at the hospital and say's that she thought it was her behind the curtains, Audrey is ever so pleased to see her .Gail asks her if she has had her dinner, Audrey says yes, but she stayed away from the smokey bacon crisps, and then she asks Gail if she has seen the consultant. "seen him, i nearly hugged him last night", Audrey makes light of it and tells Gail not to be greedy as she has a wonderful good looking hubby (time to take off those rose coloured glasses Audrey, i think). Gail then tells Audrey that they have boarded up all the windows and doors and that Richard is going to meet the fire inspector to see what caused it and how much damage there was, and that they have even sorted out the insurance for her and she has to worry about nothing. Yeah right.

The fire inspector is now at Audrey's with Richard he tells him how it started and then goes to check the smoke alarm, he sees that there is no batteries inside and say's that he is not at all surprised and that he thinks people just buy them cos they look pretty. Richard tuts and shakes his head.

Back at the new families house (sorry, still no names as yet) mums cleaning and dad and daughter are watching telly and she is still moaning about her bedroom, when there is a knock at the door, mum is worried who it is and sends dad to answer it, "it's someone with flowers" say's dad. Behind them is none other than Lucy, she tells him they are for next door but there is nobody home, he say's that he doesn't know them and he saved by a passing Archie who recognizes Lucy, asks her what she is doing here, explains about the flowers for a mrs. Roberts, "Audrey, well they knock the shine off mine" he say's, they stand and have a chat on the new family's doorstep, Lucy turns to say thanks, but he shuts the door in her face. Archie then persuades a reluctant Lucy to come have a drink in his local, Lucy only agreed after she heard the name rovers. They go in for a drink and Fred insists they are "on t'house" after what Archie done for Audrey, and then Lucy is introduced to Shelly. Peter is also there and is not best pleased. Shelly thinks that peter doesn't go back to work just yet as he cannot be parted from her, but as soon as Lucy leaves, so does he, he catches up with her and asks her what she thinks she's playing at, and that it was a snidy trick, Shelly has done nothing wrong and to leave her out of this and never to go into the rovers again, just then Karen goes by, sees peter and ask if he had heard about her Steve, peter say's yes and that everyone has, she then asks Lucy if she gets many orders for flowers for men, Lucy tells her that she does these day's, its quite common, Karen then senses that she is interrupting something and says goodbye, Lucy also leaves. Audrey is now at Gail's and Archie arrives with he flowers, they are from nick and Steven, Gail and Richard go to pick up David and Bethany, but not before she makes sure Archie is going to stay with her, Audrey then tells Archie that she can't blame them for not trusting her, as she can't trust herself anymore and is frightened that she will do something daft and hurt the family. She also tells Archie that Richard told her how the fire started and that she remembers putting the pan on for a hot drink, but could not be bothered to make it, so switched it all off and went to bed, she knows she switched it off, and as for taking out the smoke alarm battery there is just no way she would have done that, but it seems a clever Richard convinced her otherwise.

Maxine, Doreen and baby Joshua go to visit the new family, with a cup of sugar (it is supposed to be a tradition to welcome a new family to the neighbourhood) they introduce themselves, and then the dad say's "hello, i'm Tommy nelson, this is my wife Angela, daughter Katie, son Craig" and then he goes upstairs to do something, this leaves a worried mum, Doreen shakes her hand and says she is Doreen heavy, then Angela remembers she has a letter for her, it came through there door by mistake and hands it to her. Doreen opens it there and then, and she starts ranting and raving that her ex has cut off her money and half the house, and also named mike Baldwin as her lover. Maxine tells her they can go home and discuss it, and say's her goodbyes. Dad hears this and comes downstairs again, and they take the micky out of Maxine and her mum, Maxine hears this as she is in the hallway coming back for her cup "it's just that it was part of a wedding present" she tells them. Oops

Meanwhile, Audrey tells Gail that she want's her to book her another appointment with the psychiatrist again.

Doreen has a word with mike, but he tells her that he wants nothing to do with it or her and that she was on her own, Doreen is gutted, she has lost everything.

Tommy and Craig go to the chippy for their tea, Tommy convinces Craig that he want's to give Katie the bigger bedroom, but Craig only agrees to this after some cost to his father £20.00p. When they get home, Craig tells Katie the rooms hers, mum say's "nothing changes then" Tommy asks her what she means by this, Angela say's "whatever daddy's little girl want's she gets" dad say's "nowt to do with me, it was all Craig's idea" they all smile, and girl feeds dad a chip, mum smile turns to a frown when she sees this.

Martin comes to collect David as he is going to sleep at his dads while Audrey is at theirs. Richard has a quick word with martin about Audrey's medication, martin explains what pill is for what, Richard want's to know what ones are lethal, "er! They all are, but i don't have to tell you what paracetemol can do, do i Richard" say's a shocked martin. Richard say's of course not, it was just that as she is so forgetful he can't take the chance of her overdosing. (more like, making sure she has just the right amount to overdose).

Friday 15 November

Breakfast at the Hillman abode, and Audrey (still asleep upstairs) is being discussed by Gail, Richard and Sarah, since Gail reckons her Mum is suffering from Alzheimer's. Gail promises to look after her Mum, and Richard swears that he'll go along with whatever Gail decides to do.

Kevin is leaving for work, and he happens to mention to Sally that, when he was speaking to Nathalie the other day (Sally is suspicious of his having spoken to Nathalie!), she had told him that the house across the road had been bought by a housing association, so the new family who've just moved in must be renting.

Chez Hillman, and Audrey comes downstairs to go to work, but she is dissuaded by Gail, Richard and Sarah. Richard reminds Audrey that he'll deal with the insurance details, and then asks her if she's taken her medication. Audrey decides to stay home today.

In the [mysterious] new family's home, the boy and girl are leaving for their first day at their new school. The father forbids the girl to write to her friend, Kelly, and adds that 'it's the way things have to be'... The girl retorts, 'And whose fault is that?' The mystery deepens.

Peter and Shelley's flat, and the cheating Peter is in a bad mood, which Shelley puts down to too much ale last night. Peter claims that he was drinking to forget, and has now forgotten. [The old jokes aren't always the best ones.]

Richard is paying the newspaper bill in the Kabin, and tells Rita that he's very worried about Audrey's state of mind. Archie enters, en route to pay Audrey a visit, but Richard doesn't think that that's a good idea, at least for the moment. Rita and Archie both agree that that Audrey is indeed lucky to have Gail and Richard by her side.

Chez Hillman, where Fred is paying Audrey a visit. He thinks that 'out of evil can come good' - maybe this is fate giving her a nudge to take things easy, to sell up and move into a home. Richard arrives home, and asks Gail what Fred is doing there - it'll only confuse Audrey further. Fred leaves, looking forward to seeing Audrey in the Rovers later. Gail has to take Sarah to the hospital, but Richard offers to stay with Audrey to look after her.

In the Rovers, Vik orders a pint and wants his change in coins, to feed the fruit machine. Doreen and Mike have a cosy chat about their 'relationship' - he'll resume their friendship, just as long as he's kept out of her divorce proceedings. Vik wins 30 pounds on the fruit machine. [At least someone's happy, albeit temporarily!]

Chez Hillman again, and Audrey is prepared to go out for a walk, on her own, down by the canal, which Richard cannot allow. However, he gets his jacket and will go with her. Audrey would rather be on her own.

In the betting shop, Vik puts all his winnings on a horse, against the sage advice of Sally, whose father was addicted to gambling.

Gail and Sarah arrive home from the hospital to find Audrey and Richard arguing. Audrey sees herself trapped by her family, who all think she's now senile, but Gail assures her that 'me and Richard will always be there for you'.

Vik's horse loses, again, and he is beginning to look desperate as he leaves the betting shop.

Gail and the hideous Richard discuss what options they have, as Audrey (they think, wrongly!!) is sleeping upstairs. Audrey comes out of her room, in time to overhear her daughter agree with Richard that, since Audrey's mind has obviously flipped, they ought to take out power of attorney over her finances. After all, Richard suspects that someone could well take advantage of her...

Streetcars, and Vik is on the phone to the bank, transferring two thousand pounds from the business account to his personal account.

Gail and Richard, still convinced that Audrey is fast asleep upstairs, decide to have a cup of tea, and Audrey seizes her chance to escape...

... and runs past David in the street, pleading with him not to tell, which of course he does, and the ever-supportive Richard goes off in hot pursuit.

Peter arrives at Lucy's and, after assuring her that he doesn't have any intention of finishing their affair, and that he'll no longer be jealous, they fall into each other's arms. [As Pepys often said - 'and so to bed']

Richard catches up with Audrey walking along the canal bank, and rushes to meet her, promising that they can 'sort this out', together. Audrey fears for her safety, eyeing Richard and the cold waters of the canal, and she runs off, while Richard runs off in the opposite direction for his car.

Lucy and the deceitful, conniving Peter are in Lucy's bed, and they both agree that their relationship is brilliant and must continue, just as it is, with no strings attached. Lucy assures Peter that he has nothing to be jealous about.

A terrified Audrey arrives at Archie's house and bangs on his door for sanctuary from Richard, who arrives in his car seconds later and tries to persuade Audrey to come home with him, for Gail is worried sick. Archie opens the door to the distraught Audrey, and Archie seems to be taken in by Richard's explanation of Audrey's state of mind: after all, what Archie sees is her family doing their best for her, and he leads a tearful Audrey to Richard's car.

Peter arrives home early, and immediately embraces the innocent, faithful Shelley, promising her his undying love.

On the way out to Richard's car, Audrey's mind is in turmoil but she suddenly realises the dreadful truth of the whole situation, and laughs, then blurts it out - Richard wants her money and is going to kill her to get his hands on it. Naturally, Richard protests his innocence, but Archie is persuaded by his good friend Audrey to let her stay with him for the time being, and not to send her back to Gail's with Richard. Archie takes a shaken Audrey inside, much against Richard's wishes. While Richard stands outside a slammed door, Audrey assures Archie that Richard wants to kill her...

Sunday 17 November

It is a four-hander tonight! ITV are saving a bit of dosh by just using four actors for the whole of the programme.

Audrey gets comfort from Archie while Richard is banging on the door.

She is convinced that he is after her money. Archie lets him in and Audrey starts to scream. Archie talks to Richard outside. Archie tells Richard that he believes it is delayed shock. He offers to put her up for the night in the spare bed. Richard wants to take her home to Gail, but Archie says there is no way that she will come with him.

Gail is waiting anxiously for Richard's return.

Audrey explains to Archie that she overheard Richard and Gail talking about her will, and getting Power of Attorney (a legal process to give them access of her affairs). She says she would be worth a quarter of million pounds. She is convinced that she is neither confused or mistaken.

Richard returns home. He explains she's staying with Archie. Gail thinks she should come home. Richard explains that she thinks he is after her money and trying to kill her.

Audrey tells Archie that there is nothing wrong with her mind. She will prove that she is ok. She says she was only referred to a psychiatrist because she made the doctor do so, because she wanted a second opinion.

She asks Archie to perform a test that she did at the doctor's. Ask her four simple questions that she will know the answer to, and then she will answer them after she has counted backwards from 100. While Audrey is counting Gail rings. Audrey tells Archie to tell her that she is not going back. Gail says she will be round first thing in the morning, but to contact her if there is any change to her condition or problems.

Audrey explains how she would go about changing the battery on the smoke alarm. She would need to use a stool to reach it, and she is convinced she would remember if she did that.

Archie reminds her that she did leave her glasses in the taxi, but it was lucky she did because that is when he spotted the fire.

Richard talks to Gail about her mother and how clever and intelligent she was before she got altzeimers.

Audrey tells Archie how Richard saw her take the dress out to take to the cleaners. She remembers Richard took her round to Archie and didn't take it into the dry cleaners. The time Archie took her back the cleaners would be closed. She can confirm the date by the ticket. Archie is a bit dubious but goes to check his diary. When he confirms the date he wonders what Richard's motives would be.

Richard recounts some more of his life stories about himself and his mother to Gail. He looked after his mother even though she was suffering and very confused. He thought at one time he could just push her down the stairs to end all her suffering. She was completely unaware of what she was doing. The next stage was that she became a zombie. Gail and Richard are in tears. He watched her die slowly in a hospital ward, and often wished he pushed her down the stairs.

Audrey recalls how Richard tried to dissuade her from having the locks changed at her house. Then she remembers nothing unusual happened to her while Gail and Richard were on holiday.

Archie remembers that Richard said there were no batteries in the smoke alarm before the fire brigade came and found it. Audrey is relieved that he finally believes her. He also remembers that when Richard identified the wrong body of what was thought to be his wife, he wanted her cremated as soon as possible. He now thinks this was to get rid of the evidence.

Wow what an exciting episode! Will Audrey convince everybody else of Richard's foul deeds? ..... Keep watching these pages!

Monday 18 November

Wednesday 20 November

Audrey and Archie are at the police station, Audrey does not want to report Richard but feels she must, a detective comes to see them, "i hear you have a crime to report" he say's. "yes, it is attempted murder. my son in law is trying to kill me" say's an upset Audrey.

Tommy Nelson comes down the stairs and asks Angela if he should wear a tie, she tells him, "only if you are going to make a fan belt out of it".(I take it from this he is off for his interview with Kevin) They laugh and Angela tells Tommy it will be oak and he tells her that he hopes he gets it as it would be dead handy as he could be home in seconds, Angela tells him he will get it, no problem and hands him a large brown envelope containing his references. They kiss goodbye and Tommy leaves as he does Angela has a frightened look on her face and bites her nails.(mmm, gets more puzzling).

Sally and Kevin are outside the garage and Kevin tells Sally that as they are saving a lot of money on the wedding they can decorate the house, Sally asks "what put that in yer head". "I just thought it'd be nice, a new start and all that" Kevin replies. Sally then asks him if he is going to do it, he tells her that he does not have the time, but the guy who's van he is doing up is a painter and decorator, and he will ask him for a quote. Sally tells him that they better take references as they don't want any old cowboy so Kevin say's "is that a yes then" and she tells him that it can't do any harm to get a quote, they kiss and then she leaves. Tommy turns up for his interview and states the obvious, "i'm here for my interview", 'best follow me then", replies Kevin. " have you seen anybody else yet". Kevin tells him that he has but the job is still up for grabs. back at the police station the detective asks Audrey why she thinks Richard is trying to kill her, she tells him " for money " and that when she dies her daughter Gail stands to inherit the lot hearing this the detective asks if Gail is in on it. " huh, of course not" says a very miffed Audrey "well does she know he is trying to kill you" he asks "well i tried to tell her but she doesn't quite believe it yet" answers Audrey. The detective asks her why not and Audrey tells him it is because she loves him she supposes as that it is hard to believe that your husband wants to kill yer mother. the detective then laughs and say's that his wife would. Archie then steps in and say's, " you think this is funny" and want's him to take it seriously, the detective assures them he is taking it very seriously, but Archie want's to know why he isn't taking any notes and also wants to know is it because they are over 60. The detective reassures them that at the moment it is just an informal chat at this stage. Archie tells him that the do not want an informal chat, they want Richard charged with attempted murder. Archie then goes on to explain about Patricia, how she disappeared and that he identified a body that was drowned and he had identified it as Patricia and he asked Archie to do a quick cremation on her, they detective is outraged by this until Archie explains that he is an undertaker.

In the garage, Kevin rings up Tommy's old firm for a verbal reference, but the man he has to speak to is not there and Kevin will have to write to them for one, Kevin tells Tommy of this and also say's that " there is a car out front, if you get it going by this dinner, i'll start you tomorrow, and let the paperwork chase us up". Tommy is delighted with this and goes off to fix the car.

At the police station the detective asks Audrey when she first suspected that Richard was trying to kill her.

a change of scenery, the cafe. Roy interrupts Todd by telling him that it is a pleasure to see some-one in his cafe reading poetry, he then say's to ken, do you know about this, Ken asks Todd what he is reading, Todd tells him it is William Blake, Roy asks Ken if he had heard of him, Ken answers," yes i used to teach it" , Roy say's " yes of course, how silly of me" answers Roy as he takes the book from Todd, and starts to recite from it. He then asks Ken what character he is in the book, Ken decides he is between the two, Roy then asks Dreeeeerdrie what she thought and she tells them she is baffled by it all.

At the garage Tommy gets the car working and Kevin takes it out on a test drive, " make a brew while i'm gone". Tyrone want's tea, white and one sugar, Tommy is all smiles until he sees a police car turn in, he then makes a hasty retreat to make the cups of tea wearing a very worried looking face. Back home Angela is worried that he has not come home yet, Katie tell her mum to call him, "you know i don't have a mobile". she tells Katie. Katie replies by saying that she does not need one, she could just stand on the doorstep and yell. Angela is rather horrified by this and she also say's that you don't start work straight after yer interview.

The police arrived to take Richard in for questioning as there has been some serious allegations made about him.

Kevin and Tommy shake hands, the jobs his if he wants it and that they can go to the pub to celebrate, Tommy tells him that he better not and that he had better get home Katie hears this and tells him he had better and that her mum is worried about him. Tommy introduces Katie to Tyrone and Kevin. Tyrone is delighted to meet her and say's to Kevin, " i wonder how olds she is. Kevin tells him "still at school" " too old for you, yes, but i am only 19, remember". "tell you what, you speak to Tommy tomorrow and see what he says", Tyrone tells Kevin that he could not get a word out of him today. " he will be even more unsociable if you go chasing his daughter".

Richard tells the detective that Audrey is in the early stages of dementia, the detective tells Richard that she is not losing her mind "you were playing with it" he tells him. "Ask anyone that knows her, they will back this up" says' an irate Richard. No they won't says the detective, Audrey has an independent witness that will back her story up".

Meanwhile, Gail arrives home to a worried Sarah, she didn't know whether to tell Gail or not, Gail assures her that she did the right thing, Sarah then asks what's going on. "don't tell David, but yer Gran thinks Richard set fire to her house and she must have gone to the police". Sarah tells her mum that she thought the police would have better things to be worried about. " I know" says Gail. (no Gail its you who should be afraid) Gail decides that she has to go to the police station to see what's going on and asks Sarah to ring her work and tell them that she will not be in any more today.

Back at the police station, the detective asks Richard if he has a spare set of keys to Audrey's house. Richard tells him yes, as Audrey gave them to them when she had her locks changed, and that was after she went paranoid. The detective then asks him what he was doing on Monday the 11th of November, "was that the night of the fire? if so I was at home with my wife and children. "when did you find out that there was no battery in the smoke alarm" "when the fire investigator told me" answers a now irate Richard. 'well we have an independent witness that says you knew before that" says the detective. "WHO" demands Richard. "Never mind who" he tells him, "your lying" mocks Richard. "its not me that's lying, how come you knew there was no battery in that smoke alarm". Richard tells him that it was an educated guess, the smoke alarm didn't work and she was getting very forgetful and that it was not a great feet of detective work if that was all he had to go on, and that if it was he was going to sue him for wrongful arrest. The detective tells him he hasn't been arrested, so Richard decides on harassment instead. (maybe this is going to be a new money making idea for Richard).

He then goes on to ask him about the dress that Audrey was going to take to the dry cleaners, but Richard convinces him that she must have took it before he gave her a lift to Archie's. Richard now twigs that it is Archie who is the independent witness (oops, victim # 3) Richard then goes on to tell him about Audrey's visit to the doctors, the detective tells him that he knows about it and he also know the doctor does not think she is mad, "oh, so why is she sending her to see a consultant neurologist then" Richard asks him. "When is she supposed to be doing this then," asks the detective. "oh, she didn't tell you did she", Richard smirks, "she has to see a mr speers, it must have slipped her mind, as she is getting very forgetful lately". The dc tells him that he will have to get it checked out, he then asks him about Patricia, reporting her missing and then identified a body to be that of Patrician's, then asking Archie to do a quick cremation, and did he want her out of the way. "no, I wanted to her to be laid in state on the town hall steps", what did he think, he had never seen a dead body before and the police had all but convinced him it was her before he went in, it was a very traumatic (his word, not mine, lol) time for him. The person that registered her missing was on the other side of the world, and that she was unaware that Patricia came to see him just before she was going and he told her that her best friend she was going to live with had made a pass at him whilst they were still married. As far as Richard was concerned, she wasn't missing, just needed to get away from everyone and they would be the last person she contacted . Richard went on to suggest that they try to contact charlotte morris and she will confirm it, and dr speers, and while he was at it, ring his wife Gail, she will tell him that her mother is going loopy. (flared nostrils, gritted teeth and a curled lip, mmm, is he angry now or what)

Tommy and Angela are at home having lunch and Tommy tells her that his new boss invited him to the pub for a pint to celebrate him getting the job. "it will be great you working so close to home, I just hope the references don't take too long in coming" Angela tells him. "I'm more worried about the police going next door, they seem to attract attention, that's all we need". " probably summat to do with the mad Grannie" says Angela, but with that worried look n his face.

Gail goes to the police station and confirms Richard story, so does the consultants secretary, and also Charlotte Morris in Australia. the dc is upset on hearing this as he thought he had a good juicy case on his hands.

Dreeeerdrie is trying to convince Ken that he want's to help Todd with his poetry, and when Todd asks dreeerdrie if she had any drinks with caffeine in, she asks if he will be burning the midnight oil, and Todd tells them he is having difficulty understanding it. Ken then offers to help hear him read and help him any other way if he can. After much discussion, Todd agrees that Ken can help and asks him to look over his first page essay, Ken tells him he would be delighted to, Todd leaves the shop and dreeerdrie tells Ken that this sort of stuff will look good in court, Ken assures her that he did not do for that reason. (He then gives her the, now then look).

Back at the police station, Richard is released and the detective tells him that he is sorry, but he has to follow these things up, Richard then tells him, " it's oak, but if she comes in here next week claiming to be Nell Gynn, do not buy an orange from her". Gail cuddles him and say's that she is so sorry for all of this and Richard tells her that it is ok. and that the police would probably not believed her if it wasn't for the fact that Archie Shuttleworth had backed her up. Gail is shocked and angry at this, she feels her mother has an excuse, but Archie Shuttleworth............ he should have known better, and she is heading straight round there as she decides that her mother is no longer going to live there, she is bringing her home. Richard tells her to leave it, it's over. " oh, no it isn't, not by a long shot".

Kevin brings the decorator home to meet Sally and to do a quote. (hahaha, 100 pound for the decorating and throw yer missus in for free). Sally already knows him as he is the doctor that got something out of her eye the day before in the cafe, he tells them that he can do the work, but not for a couple of day's as he has to finish a job off round the corner first. Sally asks him how long the job on their house will take and he tells her that he will be out of their hair in a no time, also that he isn't from here, he is based in Stevenage, and has to get back there. (well, i only live 50 mins from there, so i am now looking at what room needs decorating cos he is dishy, hehehe)

Meanwhile, Gail and Richard arrive at Archie's, Richard is doing the hurt puppy look, for Gail's benefit (and probably thinking how close he was to going to prison). when Archie opens the door he is surprised to see them, Gail say's "i bet you were not expecting us were you", Archie tells her that he is a little surprised and that Audrey does not want to speak to them. There are a few heated words and Gail accuses Archie of wanting her money, "is that what you do Archie, play on defenseless old widows. Audrey appears at the door and tells Gail to apologize for that remark and that it is Richard that is trying to kill her. Richard tells her that she is not well and need to be with her family, A Audrey shouts "you are not my family". Gail then sends Archie and Richard away while she talks to her mum on their own, she tells her that she wants her to come home "I have no home, your husband took care of that" and angry Audrey tells her. Gail tells her that Richard was with her the night of the fire and that she told the police that. "so, you are in on it too, you want me dead as well" Audrey cries. Gail decides that she wants no more to do with her mum.

Friday 22 November

Well tonight Iain has come down South to civilization (!) to visit his family. So I am sitting in his hot seat .... and it is very hot - what does he do there ?!!

We start at Archie's house where Audrey tells him that she is annoyed that Gail wouldn't listen to her. Archie suggests that she should ring to apologise. However Audrey thinks that will make matters worse, because it will look like she is changing her story which would make her look even more senile.

Richard tries to explain to Gail from Audrey's point of view. He thinks that she just can't come to terms with what is happening to her, because she has had quite an lively and active brain before.

The phone rings, and it is Audrey. When Audrey fails to apologise for everything Gail says she doesn't want to talk with her again.

Mrs Nelson (don't know her first name!) gives Tommy sandwiches for his first day at work.

Dev and Vik try to make up with each other. Vik says he has given up gambling.

Tommy starts work in Kevin's garage. When Kevin points out there is a problem with a rattle on a car, Tyrone butts in and suggests what the fault is.

Sarah goes to the corner shop. Rita asks her about Audrey. Sarah says she is ok, but is very evasive.

Vik treats Maria to a drink at the Rovers. He asks her about her boyfriend. She tells him that it is none of his business. He admits he is jealous. She says she will give him a final chance and agrees to go out with him that night.

Richard and Martin talk about Audrey. Richard says she's not spoken to him since the fire. He tells Martin that she seems happy at Archie's.

The police come to see Audrey and Archie. They tell them that they are dropping the case against Richard. Richard has plausible alibis for the incidents. Everything is circumstantial evidence they explain. Archie says that Richard is the best liar he has met.

Archie buys a magazine for Audrey. Rita asks how she is. He says that Audrey just wants peace and quiet for the time being, when Rita suggests popping round to see her. Rita airs her suspicions with Ken that something is going on.

Kevin and Tyrone take Tommy to the Rovers. Reluctantly he joins them.

Jason has difficulty with his work which Ken is helping with. Ken guesses it must be his love life, and gives him "fatherly" advice.

Sarah is making tea while Gail and Richard are out shopping. She asks David to help, but he is busy watching tv. Audrey calls round and invites them out for tea. David is enthusiastic, particularly when she offers to take them to the pizza. However Sarah is reluctant.

Tommy is introduced round in the Rovers. Doreen, his neighbour seems very interested in him. Tommy soon makes an excuse and leaves. The others are suspicious about him.

Maria is dressed up to go out. Vik comes in early and when Maria comments on his early arrival, he tells her that something has come up and he can't make it. She is obviously not happy.

Sarah keeps stalling before going out with Audrey. She says she has to get something for Bethany back in the house. Then when Audrey insists that Sarah and David get into the car, but Sarah insists she isn't going into the car with Audrey.

Tommy tells Mrs Nelson about the drink. He tells her that the neighbours were quizzing him about his background.

Gail and Richard arrive home. Audrey makes a final attempt to persuade David to come with her. With the commotion going on people start looking. She accuses Richard in front of Martin. Gail tells her to go and get help for herself.

Iain will be back here next week, and I will be back on Sunday after a visit to the circus in the afternoon (unless of course they keep me in!)

Sunday 24 November

Well it is me back again for another report.

Sarah is looking at her hair, hoping that it will soon grow back to normal after her accident. She discusses with Gail about Audrey. Sarah doesn't think she is really bad, she wasn't trying to hurt us. Richard thinks that they ought to report the incident to the police, but Gail says no. She is hoping her mother will get better. However to rub salt into the wounds Richard says that his mother never recovered.

Sally is on the phone to Peter, he has lost a file. RoseSop (an amalgam of the two because I can never remember which is which!), wants to find a marker pen. She is making a surprise for Sally and Kevin's wedding.

Archie tells Audrey that he has to go out. Audrey thinks that he is angry with her for trying to take the kids. He says it doesn't help her case. Audrey says she will see a specialist to get it finally sorted that she is sane.

Sally goes round to the betting office to help Peter find the file. Lucy rings on his mobile phone, and Peter just reaches the phone before her. After finding the file he shows her Vik's account. It seems he has already spent £1000.

Vik goes to see Maria at the Rovers. He invites her out again. Much to her better judgement she agrees. He then qualifies it by saying he can't go out till the middle of the week, because he has some "business" to deal with.

Mrs Nelson prepares dinner for the family. The son says he wants to see his "mate" David. His parents agree to let him go.

David asks Gail about Audrey. Her and Richard explain to him that she is not well and often forgets things. Richard says she is old and sick, which annoys Gail.

Peter meets Vik in the street. He says he's cancelled his 'slate', and has a week to pay back the money he owes.

In the cafe it is very quiet. There is Roy and Vera behind the counter, and Jack sitting waiting for her. Sally comes in with Alex. Roy rushes to serve them, and is disappointed that they only want a snack instead of a meal.

Kevin introduces Tommy to Curly and his family. However Tommy moves on quickly once he realises that Emma is a copper.

Jack is about to leave the cafe, and Rita tells Vera that she may as well go as well.

Peter makes a surprise visit to Lucy.

David is in the street chatting to Craig (master Nelson!).

Peter and Lucy end up in bed (again!).

Emma meets Mick (a work colleague) in the Rovers. She discusses with him her problems with Curly, particularly him not wanting to have another baby.

Roy comes in to the pub. Hayley asks how much he made in the cafe. He says £9.45 She says he should have closed earlier. However he feels he has a duty to his customers to stay open, just in case they want to come in. He feels guilty about closing early today. Emily then sees him and says she has been knocking on the cafe door to no avail. She wants him to put up a poster for the church jumble sale.

Archie has a document which he shows Audrey. He thinks this may help her case.

Richard says he may need to raise some money, but will probably rent out his flats to help.

Kevin tells Sally that he thinks Alex seems a nice bloke.

Audrey goes round to Gail and Richard to say that it is no use him trying to kill her anymore. Gail interrupts, but Audrey insists on being herd. She says she has changed her will, and Richard will not get a penny.

Wednesday 27 November

Peter is on the phone trying telling Lucy the he is trying not to look suspicious after Vik saw them at the casino. Shelly returns to collect her handbag that she forgot and nearly catches Peter out. Peter say's to Lucy "talk about sailing close to the wind" he does not know what to do but sit tight and wait for Vik to make the first move.

Still on the decorating at hussy sal's, he strips the wallpaper off the living room wall, and we old viewers get a treat, he uncovers Hilda's old mural, he tells Sally that he can restore it, but Sally and Kevin decide not to bother on see-ing this, Kevin decides to take a trip down memory lane, but Sally cuts him short and then Alex notices that she has a new top on and this pleases Sally no end and he tucks her label in, Sally has a beaming smile on her face (mmm).

Steve and Vik are in the cab office discussing Vik's car, Steve asks him if he fixed it yet, Vik tells him he has, (we all know this to be lies, as it was never broke in the 1st place as he was at the casino), Vik then tells Steve that he had some good luck last night, Steve assumes he means with Maria, and Vik tells him he was on his own and that" I could not believe how fortune was smiling down on me in a way I never thought possible".

At the Nelson's, Tommy is trying to get Angela to go find a job and reads a list of vacancies from the local paper, after giving her some ideas she tells him NO, Tommy tells her that the way she is carrying on, anybody would think she didn't want to get a job, she tells him that she want's her old job back with her friends. Tommy tells her that he knows it is hard, but it will get easier and then she won't have to hide behind sofa when the neighbours come calling. Angela is hurt by this remark and tells Tommy, " you didn't have to say that" and also that she will find one, but he must not rush her.

Sally is in the bookies counting out a mans winnings and she seems to be on a high, Peter tells her that it was a 50 pence stake and " he ain't won the lottery", she say's she knows and there is no need to bite her head off, Peter then tells her "it's an 8 pound win, not 80, she apologises and corrects it.

Maxine and Kevin are chatting about getting her car in for service, she asks him about his new mechanic and Kevin tells her he has had no complaints so far, why? she tells him that Angela did not even answer the door when she went round, and that she knew she was in. Kevin tells her that maybe she is just a shy person, Maxine decided " unfriendly more like". When he goes back into the garage, Tyrone tells Tommy to try the pub for a job for Angela, Kevin tells him that he thought it would be the last place , Tommy asks him what he means by this and Kevin says it's because she is quiet. Tommy starts to raise his voice and wants to know who has been saying that," her next door, I spose", Kevin tells him that she wasn't being nasty and to calm down, Tommy then flares up " just cos we ant had the neighbours round for cocktails don't mean were weirdo's". Kevin tells him to relax and Tommy apologises and say's that " it's just that I hate nosey neighbours". Kevin then tells him to try the factory, there always looking.

Over at he Rovers, Vik kisses Maria and asks her out on another date,( she agrees again, when will she ever learn) he then asks where Shelly is.

Alex and Sally are discussing the paint and was she sure about the colour, Sally tells him the she loves them, and then suggests that they go for a walk, he is worried about getting the decorating finished o time( oh i see, has scruples when it comes to his work, but never mind sleeping with another mans wife, eh)she then tells him that it is nearly 1pm and even he is entitled to a dinner break, she will even buy him a sarnie, he tells her " how can i resist".

Peter is with Lucy discussing Vik and how worried he is that he tells Shelly, Lucy informs him that that's the last thing she wants as well ( yeah rightio then, be the 1st mistress that didn't) she tells him to call his bluff as its not like he has any photo's of them. Peter tells her that Vik saw them, draped all over each other, Lucy tells him that if Vik say's owt, deny it.

PART TWO

Alex and Sally are in the park enjoying the fresh air, Alex is worried what her husband would do if he saw them together, Sally informs him that Kevin is not her husband and then goes into detail about there life.

Vik is in the bookies putting another bet on, Peter refuses and asks him for his money, Vik tells him they had a deal, but Peter screws the betting slip up and tells him to do his worst.

Sally and Alex are still talking in the park, she tells Alex that she is marrying Kevin for security, but he has upset the apple-cart, Alex asks how, and Sally tells him "cos i have feelings for you".

In the Rovers, Vik and Peter arrive, Maria asks where he is taking her tonight and Vik tells her the casino, "i've heard it's great in there, "what do you think Peter?". Peter then tells him that Shelly will not believe him as she trusts him. Vik thinks it is about time she knew what he was up to.

Joe(the slime) is back and is excited, he has just landed a big contract for a chain of shops, Mike tells that he hopes he has not bitten off more than he can chew as he is on his own for a fortnight, just the Tommy knocked the door and asks if this is the managers office, Mike tells him that it is, Tommy tells then that he is looking for a job for his wife, Joe say's to Mike, talk about great timing, he tells Tommy that there is and to come and sit down.

Back at the Rovers Vik asks Shelly is she has got a minute, just then Peter bowls in with " don't believe a word he tells you, he is trying to blackmail me" " blackmail you, what for" Shelly asks. Vik then tells her that Peter is seeing another woman behind her back, and that they were all over each other at he casino, Peter tries to tell her not to believe him, but she tells Peter to be quiet, she then summons Peter to the back room. Maria asks Karen if she heard that, Karen tells her that she is not worried about Peter, its her hubby she's bothered about, Maria asks why, Karen tells her that Vik told him that his car was broke. Maria then asks why it is that blokes have to lie.

At the Nelson's Angela is not impressed that Tommy got her an interview at the factory, she tells him that she can't even sew, he tells her that it is not a problem as Joe is going to train her up. Angela then tells Tommy that it is up to her where she works. Tommy tells her he knows why she is scared, but she just needs a little nudge and she will be ok.( I wish someone would tell us why it is).

In the Rovers back room, Shelly is going mad at Peter, he tells her that, yes he was at the casino, a rep took him and that there was a hen party there, a woman from the group took a shine to him and asked him to show her the ropes, "what ropes are these" she asks him, roulette and poker, that sort of thing, and that when she won she just jumped up, throw her arms round him and planted a kiss on his cheek, and when he looked up, who should be staring at him, "Vik" Shelly say's. "But what made him think he could get away with it" Shelly wants to know, Peter tells her of Vik's serious " and I mean serious" gambling debts and to ask Sally what he is like when he comes in. Peter swears he is not lying to her and for her to tell him that she believes him, Shelly say's nothing.

Sally and Alex realise that they both have feelings for one another and kiss by the lake and then head back.

Vik is in the cab office when Peter pays him a visit, he tells them that Shelly did not believe him so Vik say's ' more fool her". Peter then tells him that he is his worst enemy and that he has sold his debt on so someone else, Vik is shocked at this and say's he cannot do that, Peter tells him, he can and he has, Vik is worried and asks Peter Can't they sort it out, and that he will pay him back monthly, Peter tells him that he is too late, someone else will be collecting it from now on, Vik asks who, Peter tells him that's none of his business. ( will it be cuz dev, mmm)

Vik arrives and places a bet, he tells Peter it is on account, Peter say's " i beg yer pardon", Vik has decided that Peter should sort out his account for him, Peter tells him no he won't, then Vik asks if he enjoyed himself at the casino the other night and who was the young lady he was with, Peter tells him to keep his voice down and that they will have a word in private.

Sally throws a sicky and goes home dead excited at the prospect of see-ing Alex, meanwhile Peter tells Vik that he is not prepared to wipe his slate clean, Vik then tells him that he has never blackmailed anyone before, and the ever so quick Peter asks if that is what he intends on doing (duh, if he was bright he would never have got himself in this position in the 1st place). Peter tells him "no, I wont do it", so Vik tells him that he will not let the fact he saw him with another woman go, and that maybe it was time Shelly knew. Peter offers to let Vik pay it off monthly, but Vik is having none of this, he laughs and say's " no way, I want the slate cleared and a new credit of, shall we say, another thousand added" Peter asks him how will he know that he wont come back for more once that has gone, Vik say's " you don't".

back at number 13, Sally seems to have forgotten her headache is all smiles when she gets home, Alex laughs and tells her he thinks that she is checking up on him, Sally also laughs and say's she has been rumbled and asks Alex if he would like a cuppa, the smile is wiped off of her face when he tells her that he is off out, but it is back on again when he asks her to go with him.

Friday 29 November

Breakfast with Peter and Shelley, who tells the cheating Peter that she doesn't know what's going on in his life and that he's 'moving away' from her and that his real life is not here. Peter looks glum and plays the 'my partner doesn't understand me' bit.

In the street, Steve stops Vik in his taxi and confronts him with the fact that Vik has been seen in the casino; Vik states that it's none of Steve's business, and drives off.

The Webster household, and Kevin comments to Sally that their decorator, Alex, doesn't seem to be getting on very quickly. [Yes, he is, Kevin, he is!] Kevin asks Sally if she can come to town with him while he chooses a new suit for their imminent wedding, but she'll be too busy. Kevin departs for work, while Sally awaits the arrival of Alex.

Tyrone is waiting for the garage to open, when he spies Katy (from the mysterious new family, the Nelsons) on her way to school. Katy says she hates the area and her new school, just as her father, Tommy, arrives for work and accuses Tyrone of 'courting' his daughter. [I never imagined the kids on Corrie 'courted', but just jumped into bed at the drop of a pair of pants.]

Peter again tries to reassure Shelley of his undying love for her, but Shelley still harbours grave doubts about what Peter does, or where he goes. She confronts him with the obvious question - is there another woman? Peter, of course, denies this vehemently, and asks Shelley if she's got another fella which, of course, she denies vehemently, and continues by saying that she knows little of what goes on in his life.

A smitten Sally eventually finds the errant decorator having a coffee in the cafe, and the pair have a heart-to-heart chat about what they did (kissed) and what they both wanted to do. [No clues!] Sally reckons it's a case of pre-wedding jitters, maybe, and, all doe-eyed, she hands her keys to Alex, promising to see him at dinner time.

The Hillmans' happy home, and Richard tells Gail that he's concerned about Audrey - after all, they're all in the one family - and he persuades the hapless Gail to go to see Archie to mend the rift with Audrey.

Angela Nelson phones Joe Carter at the factory and withdraws her application for a job there. [No, I have no idea what the family's 'secret' is!]

Karen and Janice come out of the factory for a fag, and Tommy asks them if anyone's been for an interview for a job this morning. No.

Vik pulls up his taxi to talk to Peter, just as he's going into the Rovers. He wants to know if Peter really has sold-on his debt to a second party. He has. (Dev is a witness to this little meeting, but is out of earshot.)

Chez Nelson, and Tommy persuades Angela to try again for a job at Underworld - she can't stay indoors for the rest of her life...

Gail catches up with Archie outside the Rovers and is dismayed to learn that her Mum has gone away for a while, but he won't divulge where, just maybe to the Lake District or even Scotland.

Angela Nelson arrives at the factory and asks Joe for another chance for a job, which he eventually grants her.

In the Rovers, Peter is still glum, silently sipping his pint. Shelley pours him another, and they, again, discuss their future together, or not, which chat culminates in Peter's leaving, in a bad mood, without drinking, or paying for, his pint.

Sally has rushed home from her busy stint at the betting shop to see how Alex is getting on. They are just about to, well, get closer, when Kevin arrives with his new suit, of which both Sally and Alex approve. [Sally is now dewy-eyed.]

The Rovers, and Shelley tells Betty that her relationship with Peter is going from bad to worse. Vik, in for a quiet drink, has to suffer the wrath of Maria and Steve, neither of whom trust him any more. A smirking Dev joins the trio, and is glad to hear that Vik has his problems sorted... Kevin tells Tyrone that he's not had Tommy's references confirmed, and wonders why not. Joe confirms to Karen and Janice that he's just hired someone new at the factory. [Now, who can that be?]

Peter has arrived at Lucy's flower shop, which she closes for a heart-to-heart chat, and she tells Peter a few home truths about women being more sensitive than men [nothing new there then!]. Peter says that he's sick of trying to cover-up his shenanigans, Lucy adding that she knew it would all end in tears.

Alex hands in the keys to Sally at the betting shop, where Sally again is doe-eyed when she sees him. Will he see his fiancee this weekend? Yes. Will he come back on Monday? Yes. Promise? Alex promises.

The Hillmans, and Gail divulges that she's spoken to Archie about her Mum, who's gone away somewhere, destination unknown. Richard grabs his jacket and sets off to confront Archie.

In Lucy's flat, Peter unburdens himself to her, and tells her she is wonderful, then says he's going to sort out his life. [Why is this lovely girl, Lucy, always 'available' when Peter chooses to grace her with his presence?]

Richard arrives at Archie's, to 'clear up this misunderstanding' but, in spite of Richard's sinister threatening attitude, Archie is giving nothing away about Audrey's whereabouts, no matter how much the dreaded Richard huffs and puffs. Richard, before being summarily ejected by Archie, threatens to find out where Audrey is, but the heroic Archie is not cowed at all by Richard's threats.

Peter arrives in the Rovers and asks Shelley for a chat in the back room and, once there, Peter asks Shelley to trust him and moreover, to prove his commitment to her, he proposes to Shelley. "Will you marry me?"
