Friday 1 February

The episode opens in Roy's Rolls, where Toyah is labouring alone (Roy is off sick and Vera can't work until the afternoon) while the love-lorn Sam hovers at the counter wanting to talk to her. All Toyah wants is to get home, write the two essays she has for college and get to bed. The doleful Sam becomes even more doleful... Karl arrives to talk to Tyrone. He has another job for him, and Tyrone agrees, since Kevin will be away from the garage in the afternoon.

Duggie calls into the Corner Shop for some pain-killers - he has a hangover. Sunita goes to fetch some for him, while Duggie takes the opportunity to ask Deirdre's advice about plans he has to whisk Sunita off for a romantic weekend. Sam is there, waiting to be served, and overhears...

Steve is helping Shelley to move her many bits and bobs to Peter's flat. Peter arrives and Steve is just about to drive off when he's approached by Duggie, who wants a phone number from him. Karen, in the background some way off, sees their conversation and concludes (wrongly!) that Steve is going to buy one of Duggie's luxury flats, which she's been pushing for. Steve drives off. Karen offers to help Shelley with her stuff, but her offer is declined. However, Karen does happen to mention that she and Steve are moving soon to a luxury flat, before she goes on her merry way.

In the Corner Shop, Deirdre tries to wheedle some information from Sunita about where she'd really love to go for some imaginary romantic weekend. Sunita has guessed that Duggie has put Deirdre up to this and admits that she loves Blackpool with its Pleasure Beach.

Shelley and Peter have her belongings in the flat, which looks like a bit of a tip. She wonders if she and Peter's relationship will work out, but Peter assures her that it will. Peter wants to celebrate her moving in, but Shelley orders him to go to work - she'll be there for him later, every day and night.

In the cafe, Richard and Duggie meet up, the latter still suffering while the former looks chirpy, and anxious to advise his friend about investments. Duggie thinks his money is safe enough where it is. Sam talks to Tyrone about his problems with Toyah - what can he do to win back her affection? Tyrone advises him to do something special for her and the hapless Sam seems happy to listen to Tyrone!

In the Kabin, Rita asks Karen if she's managed to find a flat, just as Vikram appears. Karen preens herself and divulges that she and Steve are moving to one of Duggie's luxury flats - the best one - and she'll have to shop now for furniture. Karen leaves, all smiles. Vikram asks Rita if she's having a party to celebrate the departure of the 'couple from Hell', but Rita wishes them well. Vikram, for his part, wishes Steve all the best - he needs it, with a wife like Karen.

Back in the cafe, Sam tries to talk Toyah into a short break; his treat. Toyah sees so many pressures on her at the moment - her Mum, Les and college - so she's not interested. The ever-doleful Sam now looks clinically depressed.

Tyrone is locking-up the garage when Karl appears and hands him a few extra pounds for his work. Karl wants an extra small favour from Tyrone, in the form of an MOT certificate. Tyrone at first refuses, but Karl puts the pressure on - they're mates, eh, and he doesn't like to be let down.

In the Rovers, Sam receives some advice about women from Vikram, who also advises Steve that he's a mug, buying a luxury flat for Karen. Steve cannot imagine why Karen has been telling everyone about their imminent move, as he's made it clear to her that they can't afford it. Peter thanks Eve for her help in getting Shelley to move in with him. Eve will be the first to receive an invitation to their house-warming party. Karen comes into the pub and joins the little group of Steve, Vikram, Tyrone and Sam. Steve wants an immediate 'word' with her, but she won't listen to him as she's convinced that she'll soon be moving to a luxury flat. Steve goes off on an errand, while Karen sets up the drinks.

Deirdre eventually catches up with Duggie and tells him what Sunita's wishes are - bright lights. Vegas? Ibiza? South of France? No - Blackpool!! Duggie rushes off and calls a pal on his mobile; his pal has a little cottage in Ireland, ideal for a romantic weekend. Rita passes, and Deirdre tells her that she'll never help anyone again, for this advice she's given is going to end in disaster.

Back in the Rovers, Duggie has booked the cottage. He meets Shelley and expresses his sadness that she's moved in with Peter. Shelley pleads with him to give Peter a chance, for she's happy. Peter comes back and the happy couple go home, but not without issuing an invitation to Duggie to their flat-warming, which Duggie accepts. Karen brings a tray of drinks to the table. Where's Steve? Vikram is glad to see her, as he is getting depressed about the miserable pair he's sitting with - Sam and Tyrone. Karen is very happy.

Back to Peter's flat, where Shelley has effected a transformation. Peter is delighted.

In the Rovers again, Deirdre warns Duggie about his ill-chosen venue for a romantic weekend with Sunita - is there a theme-park in the vicinity? Steve reappears and tells Karen that he's finalised their plan to move. Karen insists that they go right away to see their new flat - the Rovers will no more be their local, she crows!

In Duggie's flat, he tells Sunita about the little cottage in Ireland and then admits that they're off to romantic Blackpool in a few weeks, thanks to Deirdre's telling him about the crazy woman he's involved with.

Outside, Steve tells Karen that he can't afford one of Duggie's new flats, but he's bought a house. Karen is delighted, and insists they go to see it immediately.

Sam follows Toyah home and pleads with her to tell him what is wrong. She complies with his request - she is fed-up with Sam's following her around like a lost puppy and she slams the door in his face.

Steve, as Karen requested, drives her to their new house and stops outside number 11, his Mum's previous house which she was trying to sell. Karen explodes in anger and claims that she'd rather 'kip on the streets' as stay in that house.

Sunday 3 February

Rita overhears an argument between Steve and Karen. It is so loud that most of the street can hear it as well.

Sam confides in Tyrone that he is having a problem with Toyah. He likens her to a car, where if a part is broken you can fix it. However he does not know how to handle her. [An amusing bit in this scene is when he likens her to the car, her refers to reliable cars such as Vauxhall, Ford, - a couple of other brands to keep the lawyers happy! but didn't mention .. Toyota !!!!!]

Karl the crooked car dealer comes round to see Tyrone. He wants a job done as an emergency. He threatens Tyrone and he therefore agrees to do it.

In the Kabin they are all talking about the row. Rita says she will go up to see them.

They are arguing about the house. Karen had her heart set on one of Duggie's luxury flats, but Steve wants to move into no.11 (his mother's old house). As Rita arrives Steve storms out. Rita finds Karen crying.

Vik goes round to pick up Hazel only to find that her husband is coming as well.

Rita offers sympathy to Karen. She thinks that her marriage is a joke. Rita tells her that a bit of fire in a marriage can be good. Rita encourages her to take a look at no.11, it will be better than a small flat they have now. She suggests that Karen should ask for it to be decorated to her taste, so that Steve has won entirely.

Hazel manages to tell Vik that she will call him during the week. He tells her not to bother, he doesn't want to get involved with deceipt.

The girls in the factory want to know what the row was all about. She tells them that it was not a row but a lovers tiff over the number of bathrooms they are going to have in their new house.

Deidre and Sunita are talking about relationships, and how they can waste their time on them. Toyah says she wonders if they are always right. She asks whether Ken is right for Deidre. Deidre says she thinks he is. Toyah thinks Sam is not right for her.

Sam tells Tyrone he wants to see Toyah. Tyrone lets him go while he locks up, and Karl arrives. Tyrone then gives him a blank MOT certificate (a test of car's roadworthiness).

Steve comes home to a greetings from Karen. She tells Steve what she wants in their new house. Steve is surprised at the change of attitude. He tells her that as she was so adamant she didn't want it he has re-rented it to Eileen. She is very angry to put it mildly!

Sam comes round to see Toyah. She says she is busy cleaning the cafe later. Sam offers to help.

Karen tells Fizz that her and Steve are staying on at the flat. She explains that Rita has had a couple of turns, and not been well, and she says she is staying on for Rita's safety.

Duggie and Sunita discuss Shelley. Of course he then walks straight into a trap by describing his feelings for her.

Rita comes into the Rovers and Fizz calls over and asks her about her turn. Rita is surprised but as Fizz continues to say that Karen told her, she carries on with the story to Karen, and how she is looking forward to Karen looking after her overnight.

Sam arrives at the cafe. Most of the work has been doen. Toyah wants to talk to Sam. She wants to finish their relationship. She tells him he is like a puppy, he would be pleased to be with anyone. She says she really doesn't feel anything for him. She says she wants more life in him. Sam leaves in tears.

It is me again tomorrow with an hour special, which means those of you in Canada who are having your programme suspended for the Olympics will unfortunately fall even further behind.

Monday 4 February

As I said last night we had an hour long episode tonight. Those of you across the pond will probably catch up with us around xmas day!! LOL

Les is chatting with Sam saying that he is surprised, and in view of all that he had done for her, he shouldn't just accept that that Toyah has dumped him.

Sunita and Duggie look across the Street at each other - daggers drawn!

Richard wants to go and look at the house again. Duggie is not happy that he is continually watching the men at work. When Richard leaves, Duggie rings through the foreman to tell him to get the men looking busy.

Shelley invites Toyah and Sam, Roy and Hayley to her housewarming party. Toyah says she has split from Sam but would come. Roy declines for himself and Hayley explaining that parties aren't "their thing".

Richard arrives at the house. There seems to be work going on. He sees the foreman who explains that a lot work needs to be done. Richard is very suspicious. A lot of the fittings have been taken apart.

Shelley tells Peter, in the pub, that Toyah and Sam have split up. Peter goes over to Sam and invites him to the party. Shelley tells Peter that Toyah has already accepted an invitation.

Vik, Bobbie, Steve and Karen all try to give Sam advice on how to handle Toyah.

Les talks to Toyah and tells her to think again before dumping Sam.

Hayley is annoyed that Roy has turned down the invitation to the party. She wants to go.

Richard tells Gail that he thinks they are gutting the house unnecessarily. However he is not sure if he is right. He says he will go tonight when nobody is around to have a good look around.

Les tells Sam that Toyah does want him. He ought do something spectacular and spontaneous.

Blanche tells Eve that in her day women waited for the men to propose before moving into their houses.

Duggie apologies to Sunita. He says he's a good friend to Shelley and nothing more. She thinks he is jealous of Peter and Shelley.

Hayley buys Roy a "loud" (mauve striped) shirt for the party. Roy looks a bit perplexed.

People arrive at the party. Toyah tells Peter not to worry about Sam. He has as much right to be at the party as she has.

Gail arrives at the pub. Audrey asks where Richard is. She says he had a couple of things to do, but would be along later. Duggie is standing next to her listening.

Shelley explains to Sunita why Duggie hates Peter. She says he was fiddling the whisky while working in the pub, and Duggie got caught by the weights and measures.

Richard goes round to the house. He has a look around. Then Duggie comes in. He asks Richard what he is doing there, Richard says the same thing to him. Richard accuses Duggie of the work not being up to scratch. He says he has spoken to other builders and they think things may not be progressing quickly enough. Richard accuses Duggie of doing the work on the cheap.

Sam tells Bobbie that he is trying to pluck up courage to talk to Toyah. She says she is waiting. He eventually plucks up the courage to go over and then blurts out that he wants to marry her. The party goes quiet. She says no, in no uncertain terms. She wants to know why he thinks that she would want him. She just wants him to leave her alone.

Richard says he has been to an Architectural Society about the house and they said that some of the stuff dug up would be worth a fortune. Richard tells Duggie that he wants him out, and sacks him. Duggie then falls through a bannister down the stairs.

Richard goes down to him to see what has happened. He gets no response from him. Then he searches his pockets for his keys, and drives off.

Eve tells Blanche that the Rovers is like a morgue because everyone is at the party. Blanche says that she shouldn't mention the morgue, it is too upsetting for her.

Sam follows Toyah. She tells him to go away. She tells him there is no future for them.

Blanche then thinks it may help to talk about unhappy memories. She says it is 39 years to the day that her husband was killed in a road accident. Deidre, aged 7 at the time, saw the whole thing, it obviously had a lasting effect on her, which shows by her choice of husbands. She considers Ken is a surrogate father to her.

Richard is running around the streets trying not to be seen. He goes into Diggers flat.

Roy and Hayley arrive at the party. Karen teases him about the shirt.

Richard gains entry to Duggie's flat. The alarm goes off. He notes the date on a trophy near the alarm, and puts that into the alarm, and it turns it off.

Sunita goes to look for Duggie. She sees a light on in his flat and goes up and knocks on the door. Richard is inside being quiet. She calls him, there is no response, so eventually she goes away and back to the party. Shelley tells her that he doesn't play games like not answering the door. Unless she heard him inside he must either not be there or dead.

Vik tells Steve he is staying clear of Hazel since he met her husband.

Richard returns to the house. He hears Duggie's mobile phone ringing. He puts the keys back into his pocket.

Everyone at the party persuades Roy to dance, and when he does it is to great cheers.

Richard meets Sam in the street. He seems depressed, so he brings him into the pub. Sam decides to go home. He explains his lateness because he met Sam who looked lonely. Audrey and Gail think that it was a very nice thing to do.

Richard says before he goes to the party he wants to ring Duggie. He rings his mobile and speaks to the voice mail to leave a message for him.

Back at the party, Sunita is still trying to contact Duggie. His mobile rings and rings (spot the inconsistency!!)

Phew!

Friday 8 February

In Roy's Rolls, Fiz is showing-off her new real gold necklace, which Tyrone bought her, to Vera, who remains unimpressed. Hayley says she likes it but then, says Fiz, Hayley has taste. Steve tells Vik that his 'fancy woman' has been on the phone for a taxi that afternoon, but Vik doesn't want to know. Steve wonders about picking her up and is warned by Vik that there may be a husband as well. Before leaving for work, Fiz flashes her necklace to Audrey and Maria. Audrey confides to Maria that she's glad Richard was there to support Gail when the body of Duggie was found.

At Gail's house, Richard expresses his remorse about Duggie's death, but Gail assures him that, while he obviously doesn't want to speak ill of the dead, it was all a tragic accident, although Duggie had cut corners on the flat-refurbishing contract. Gail advises Richard just to tell the truth to the police... Richard looks suitably remorseful.

In the factory, Karen is suspicious of Fiz's new expensive jewellery - did Tyrone buy the necklace for her, or was it them?

In the Corner Shop, Sam asks Sunita how she is and she admits that she's so upset, but is trying to hide her grief. Sunita tells Sam that they were 'an odd couple' but Sam doesn't see it that way. The ever-diplomatic Les arrives for cigarettes, jumps the queue and tells Sam to forget about Toyah and concentrate on the countless beautiful girls in the world - and nods in Sunita's direction. Shelley arrives, concerned about how Duggie's flat is to be emptied. She and Sunita agree to complete the sad task together.

A police officer is talking to Richard and Gail about Duggie's death. Had Duggie any enemies? Why had he been in the flats the previous evening? Richard reluctantly admits that Duggie did cut corners on the conversion and that Duggie's least concern was the matter of safety. The police seem to have concluded that the incident was just a tragic accident.

In their shared flat, Peter asks Shelley why she has to get involved in tidying Duggie's effects; is there no family? Yes, he has a son, who works as a hairdresser on a cruise ship and Sunita has already e-mailed him. Can Peter be jealous?

In the garage, Sam tells Tyrone that he doesn't understand women. Kevin appears, collects his mug of tea and moans about all the paperwork he has to catch up on. Sam spies Toyah and rushes off to tell her just how rotten she has been to him - good riddance.

In the Rovers, Sunita tells Shelley that she's had a reply from Duggie's son, who says he'll be grateful if they could empty Duggie's flat. Shelley gives her opinion that his son didn't care about his Dad. Karen is still suspicious about Fiz's being in the money just now and tells Bobbi and Hayley that she thinks Fiz had a winning ticket in the hospital lottery and pocketed the cash - 5,000 pounds. Fiz, she says, will not get away with this scam...

In the garage, Tyrone eventually admits his theft of blank MOT certificates to Fiz, who doesn't see any harm in what he's done. Tyrone is plagued with guilt. Sam and Kevin go off to the pub for lunch.

Back in the Rovers, Kevin and Sam have a pint and Les tells Sam to forget about Toyah. Karen is still seething about the alleged rip-off and makes her feelings plain to Bobbi and Hayley, just as Fiz appears. Karen wastes no time in accusing Fiz of ripping them off, which Fiz flatly denies and storms off. Hayley does warn Karen that there is no proof...

Sunita and Shelley have just arrived in Duggie's flat when they are startled by a knock at the door - Richard. He excuses his intrusion, but he explains that Duggie and he had been in business together and he needs plans and papers that Duggie had. Sunita asks Richard's advice: apparently, Duggie had told her that he had money stashed away in the flat and, if they find it, or any valuables, what should they do? Richard advises them to hand over any money or valuables to Duggie's solicitor; only right and proper...

In the cafe, Les sits down with Toyah and he tells her about Sam's being miserable. Toyah explains that she's not going to get back with Sam just to put a smile on his face. Les departs.

In the factory, Fiz tries to persuade Hayley of her innocence in the alleged scam, but it's obvious that even Hayley has doubts. Fiz then finds Karen going through her bag and finding a lot of cash (the residue of the money Karl paid to Tyrone for the blank MOT certificates) and a fight ensues, only to be broken up by Hayley. Karen warns Fiz that she'll not get away with this...

Toyah phones her Mum, Janice. They both pour out their problems to each other. Maybe it's time for Janice to come back to be with her daughter?

In the Rovers, Audrey and Maria arrive for a drink. Tyrone approaches Maria - he wants to speak to her. Steve regales Vik about his having collected Hazel that afternoon. Vik appears disinterested. Tyrone admits to Maria what he's done and she tells him, in no uncertain fashion, how stupid he's been. Audrey planks her drink down and rushes off to see how her daughter, Gail, is coping. Tyrone looks, and feels, so guilty.

Audrey arrives at Gail's, all concerned about how she's feeling, just as Richard arrives. Audrey tells Richard that, while she hasn't been very welcoming to him, she's now so pleased that Gail has him by her side in this trying period of her life.

Back in the Rovers, Fiz joins the guilt-ridden Tyrone, and tells him of the horrible day she's had. Peter wants to know how Shelley got on at Duggie's flat; not much TLC there! Sam is at the bar and Toyah arrives. Both apologise to each other and agree to remain friends. Fiz again complains to Tyrone about how she's being treated at the factory and Tyrone goes off to sort the mess out. Maria seems to be enjoying Fiz's discomfiture.

In the garage, Tyrone has confessed his theft to Kevin who, understandably, is incensed at what Tyrone has done, all for a few hundred pounds. Tyrone apologises, but to no avail - Kevin fires him and never wants to see him again...

Peter, Mike and Ken are sorrowful as they remember that it is the first anniversary of Susan's death.

Mike sympathises with Richard about Duggie. Richard believes that he is insinuating that there is something more to Duggie's death than an accident.

Janices asks Mike for her old job back again. He tells her that she can start again straight away, however she says she needs to sort out somewhere to live first. Mike remarks that she has just got her job back, and now wants time off.

Gail confides in Matt that Richard is not sleeping. He suggests that he ought to try a hot bath and a warm drink.

Shelley and Sunita reminisce about the party at Duggie's a few days earlier.

Les sees Janice in the pub. She says she will be working for Mike Baldwin again. He tells Toyah that now her mum is back, he doesn't mind if she wants to see her 2 or 3 times a week.

The foreman comes round to see Richard. He suggests that he contacts Steve McDonald to be the new "gaffer".

Steve tells Vik that Hazel wants picking up. It leaves Vik wondering what to do.

Richard introduces himself to Steve and explains the job to him. Steve tells him he is not in the trade anymore and is not intersted in the job.

Shelley says that she wishes everybody would stop talking about the house. It is depressing her.

Karen thinks Steve ought to have taken the job. He says no. He has a gut feeling about the job.

Vik asks Steve if he would take Hazel. He says he won't, so Vik asks another driver over the radio.

Charlie meets Matt at the surgery. She tells him that there is another place available on the skiing trip and was he interested. He is overjoyed.

Shelley comes home to Peter. The room is full of smoke. He apologises to her that he was short with her. It was because it was "the day".

Gail catches Richard throwing food away. He says he has lost his appetite. She says that she has discussed him with Matt. Richard then loses his temperand says not to talk to him. He just wants to be left alone.

Janice is looking in the paper for homes to let. Les sees her and suggest she looks for a one bed flat.

Tryone asks for a reference from Kevin. He says that he won't. HOwever Molly who is there, persuades him to change his mind.

Shelly and Peter are talking about their memories, their previous boy and girlriends.

Richad apologises to Gail. He says he will get on top of things once they are married. The phone rings, Gail answers it. Then tells Richard it was the police. They want them to be present at the inquest.

Apologies for any incoheriences and spelling erros. It is late a night and I am very tired!!

Steve then asks Richard for a word and tells him yes he does think he can manage to look after the house but on one condition that him and Karen get first option to buy one when the work is complete at 10% below valueation. Ritchard tells him 5% but Steve says 7% and he has a deal so Richard agrees and they go off to talk money. Shelley tells Eve that Richard has got over the inquest quickly, but Eve does tell her that he did not know him as well as she did.

Over at the Garage, Molly is coming to see Kevin as she hears him turn business away as he is too busy and it is daft, she says no responce from the advert then and Kevin tells her no and she tells him to give it time but he tells her he can not cope, Molly then telks him she came to see if he wanted a spot of lunch but the anserwer will be no. Kevin then asks her if she could give him a hand but Molly tells him she knows nothing about cars and he asks her if she would write Tyrone's reference she also says she can't do that. Friday 15 February

The scene opens with Richard, at breakfast in Gail's house, but not having much appetite, while Sarah complains about having to do so much around the house while David gets away with doing nothing. Gail tells Richard that he doesn't have to move in right away if he'd rather be on his own at the moment, but he doesn't see Gail's kids as a problem - it's the imminent funeral, which he says he has to attend.

In the Corner Shop, Matt and Charlie are going away for a few days; who do they leave their key with? Gail. And Richard... Sunita and Shelley support each other in their grief for Duggie; no one else cares as much as they do. Sunita reminds Shelley that she and Duggie had planned to go for a Valentine's weekend to Blackpool.

Chez Ken and Deirdre, Ken is mulling over the idea of taking on some supply teaching and gets some encouragement from Deirdre. Blanche thinks it's a great idea and a cushy job - 9am to 3.30pm and all those holidays! Blanche looks through the post - nothing for her? Deirdre reminds her Mum that she and Ken have exchanged Valentine cards, as always. (Blanche comments that they've saved all of 54p on postage - romance is not dead here!)

Vik is cleaning his taxi and Steve warns him about getting involved deeper with Hazel. She's married, and much older. Vik tells Steve that Hazel is a lady, not a kid like Bobbi.

Matt and Charlie call in to see Gail about leaving their keys with her while they're off on holiday - no problem. Gail and Audrey have received no Valentine cards, but the girls, Sarah and Candice, have - obviously from their respective boyfriends, Luke and Todd. Not much romance there either... Gail tells Audrey about Richard's moving in; Sarah and David are looking forward to it, and it'll make Gail happy, but Audrey's expression betrays some doubt about that.

In the back room of the Rovers, a wreath for Duggie has arrived from the florist's - an oblong array of yellow flowers with the word CRUSHER picked out in red flowers. After some debate, Sunita and Shelley decide that, in spite of it's being a tad undignified, it'll do. Fred reminds them that, like Duggie himself, it's a bit big and brash.

The Kabin. Richard, although having stopped smoking some time ago, is buying cigarettes, to get him through the funeral. Rita recommends a few brandies instead. Martin enters and Richard tells him that he'll be moving in soon with Gail - any objections? Martin wishes him luck. Norris and Rita have overheard this conversation, and Norris expresses his suspicions, again, of Richard. Rita thinks he's being too critical of Richard, but Norris insists that he'll be proved right.

In the Rovers, the bar is packed with folk attending the funeral. Fiz shows off her Valentine card to Bobbi and laughs loudly. Did Bobbi get a card? Bobbi says that Vik will 'give her one later', much to Fiz's amusement at her choice of words! Mike appears and Fiz asks him if he got a Valentine. No. Fiz compares Duggie to Mike - she'd rather be dead than miserable...

Outside the Rovers, the hearse arrives. Lots of mourners there, but no family. Richard and Gail join the mourners, Richard looking increasingly distraught. Fred, Eve, Shelley and Sunita wonder if Tom, Duggie's son, will turn up for the funeral; maybe he'll be at the crematorium. (Richard listens with interest.)

Again, chez Barlow, Ken tells Deirdre that he has an interview for supply teaching on Monday. Deirdre finds a Valentine card and assumes that it's a cack-handed attempt by Blanche to engender some romance between Ken and her (Deirdre). The card is torn up and consigned to the bin.

In the Rovers, after the the funeral, Karen, Fiz and Bobbi have a cheap laugh at the assembled rugby players. Shelley, Sunita, Gail and Richard sit having a quiet drink. Duggie, apparently, had wanted to put things right with his son. Shelley says that money can be transferred to anywhere in the world these days, so Tom won't have to come home to collect his inheritance. Richard looks relieved. Fred, in the absence of any of Duggie's family, calls the pub to silence and delivers a short eulogy to his friend.

Blanche looks through the post at the Barlow's - nothing for her? Deirdre tackles her Mum about the Valentine card, but it transpires that the card Deirdre tore up was for Blanche - not Deirdre! Ken's amazement at Blanche's receiving a Valentine is cut short with Blanche's retort: "I'm not that much older than you!" Blanche has met Archie, at the cemetery and, not only is he alive, but very charming too.

Matt books Vik's taxi for a secret run to town tonight for Charlie and him. Steve overhears this and again warns Vik about getting involved with Hazel. Vik doesn't listen.

In the Rovers, Ken buys brandies for Deirdre, Blanche and him. (Double for Blanche!) Mike appears and admits that it's his birthday - 60 today. Drinks all round. Bobbi tells Vik that he's no fun to be with, especially as he's working tonight, and she's left alone in the pub. Happy Birthday to Mike - pity Adam is still in Scotland.

Vik arrives at Hazel's, much to her surprise...

Mike leaves the pub and goes home. Deirdre suggests a late party for him and Ken suggests Sunday - he'll then have something to 'make his day'.

Back at Hazel's, Vik tells her that he realises she won't leave her husband but he suggests that they see each other whenever, or wherever, they can. Hazel agrees to the affair...

Sunday 17 February

Gail is having a clear out to get ready for Richard to move in. There is a big bouncing ball which David claims that he wants to keep.

Sarah and Candice moan on about boring days.

Shelley is surprised that Peter is up and cleaning the flat on Sunday morning. He is too house-proud for her. He says it is navy practise of getting everything in order.

Gail has lost her Blue Peter annual signed by Valerie Singleton (this is a very long running childrens' tv programme - for those of you who don't know - and Valerie was one of the original presenters).

Richard turns up in a new car and gives his old one to Gail.

Blanche arrives in a hearse, accompanied by Archie (Roy Hudd). Blanche introduces him to Deidre, and Emily. He says he already knows Emily. As he is introduced he guesses everybody's height, because he is an undertaker and used to measuring for coffins.

Shelley drops some crumbs on the floor. She tells Peter not to clean up. She doesn't want everything perfect. She wants to help with the housework.

Everyone is gathering at Ken's for Mike's surprise party. Blanche introduces Archie to Jack and Vera (he measures them up). Fred is annoyed when Archie refers him to what they call in the trade a "wide load".

Mike arrives at Ken's on the pretext that Ken has a message about Adam for him. When he invites him in everybody cheers, and Mike seems pleased, especially when he finds Adam there as well.

Blanche says she met Archie after she wrote a letter complaining that one of the pall bearers at a funeral was chewing gum. They have been seeing each other since xmas. Emily says they are very compasionate.

Ken, Jack and Mike start talking about their fathers, and they believe they are becoming their own fathers!

Adam is looking very unhappy. Emily comes to comfort him. He has had a sad year. Emily says that her mother died at about his age, but she still remembers and misses her. She starts singing a song to him, that her mother used to sing.

Dev finds Deidere outside smoking. Dev is surprised that Ken is organising the party for Mike. He is thought to be the last person that would do it. Dev asks what she sees in Ken. Whereas Mike is dynamic etc., Ken is a "carpet and slippers" man. She says deep down she does really love Ken. Deidre says she has spent her life around Coronation Street.

Jack asks Rita to dance with him at the party. Rita asks Vera permission!

Archie bumps into Audrey. He says he knew Alf, and he knows that he was really devoted to her.

Ken tells Mike that he is wanted to make a speech. Mike thanks Ken for organising the party. He says Emily did the catering, Deidre did the organising, and Ken says everybody is using his electricity.

Deirdree tells Peter she hopes he is right and Peter tells her she is Jealous but Deirdree says she is not and he has not got a clue what he is talking about. Over at the bar, Bobbi is making arrangements for Vic's party and she tells the crew that she will tell Vic to meet her in the Rovers at 8 and meanwhile you will be back at the flat waiting. Les then tells sam he never had much but he thought he could always count on his family but first it was Janice and now Toyah and he said if he won the lottery tomorrow he could not replace what he has lost. Sam tells him that they are only across the street but Les tells him it is not the same they do not want him and Sam says he is sure that is not true and les tells him he does not blame them as who would want to live with a loser like him. Over at the bar, Steve mentions a stripagram or something and Bobbi tells her that is tacky not unless Sam was to do it and they agree ok then.

Vic then goes outside and reads his message from hazel and tells her he wont be able to manage on his birthday so he tells her to meet him tomorrow instead somewhere and she agrees to do so.

When Gail comes in Sarah apologizes and Gail is amazed at the state of the place and the fact that alcohol has been drunk, Todd sticks up for Sarah and Candice apologizes and says they will tidy it up but Gail tells them to go home before she tells Eileen. When they have gone she starts on Sarah and tells her she thought she could trust her after all they have been through and tells Sarah to get out of the house now.

Friday 22 February

Kirk and Jason are in the cafe when Maria enters and admits that she's been neglecting Jason, but will make it up to him tonight at Vik's party. Kirk decides to invite himself along too, for he seems to imagine that Bobbi fancies him! Toyah asks Bobbi and Vik how they're going to celebrate his birthday and Bobbi says they're going out for a meal. Vik doesn't look too enamored at the prospect...

Chez Grimshaw. Todd is still smarting from Jason's betrayal with Candice; one word leads to another and they scrap, only to be interrupted by Eileen, who learns what has taken place.

Candice arrives at Gail's and begins to tell Sarah about her and Jason when Gail arrives home, amazed to find Candice has the nerve to show her face. Candice apologises profusely, and apparently sincerely, and admits to having a duplicate key made which she hands over to Gail, who lets Candice know that she strongly disapproves of Candice's having drunk whisky and having sex with Jason. Candice denies that sex took place.

Eileen presses Jason for details of what happened between him and Candice. He admits honestly that they slept together (wonderful euphemism!), tells his Mum about the duplicate key, the fight in the street and reassures his Mum that no pregnancy will result.

In the Corner Shop, Dev wishes Vik 'Happy Birthday' and asks him why didn't meet Bobbi the other night - Vik says he was working, but Dev realises that this isn't true. Dev says nothing to him about his suspicions...

In Gail's, Candice is regaling Sarah with how manly Jason is compared to Todd - a man as opposed to a boy. Eileen arrives to try to sort the mess out, but Gail is more concerned with how Candice is. Eileen makes it clear that Jason will never make the same mistake again - neither she nor her son want a 'repeat performance'.

In the Rovers, Les is full of the joys of life. He tells Sam and Tyrone that he's met a woman, Sandra, and that she's brought sunny days to him again. Janice, Bobbi, Karen and Steve arrive and talk about the imminent party, which conversation is overheard by Les, who loudly proclaims that he has a previous engagement, with a lady friend, so won't be able to attend. Eileen arrives and spies Jason. She tells him that he's a lucky lad - Candice is sticking to her story that no sex took place, and that Gail believes her. Jason promises his Mum that he'll never go anywhere near the little tart again... Steve is disturbed to hear that Bobbi plans to move in with Vik; of course, Vik knows nothing of Bobbi's plans!

Outside, Vik is phoning Hazel to arrange a meeting for tonight. Todd and Jason meet up again and, right on cue, Maria is seen arriving home. Todd loses no time in rushing to tell her of Jason's cheating on her with Candice. Maria is incensed and orders Jason to 'get lost'.

In the cafe, Bobbi suggests to Vik that they could go clubbing after their meal, but Vik doesn't seem to care. Bobbi asks him if he'd like to know about her present to him - but he wants to be surprised.

Maria is just about to board the bus to go for her exam, but tearfully turns back, only to bump into Tyrone, whom Maria informs about Jason's recent dalliance. Tyrone immediately strides to the hardware store to 'sort' Jason, which he does by punching him and knocking him to the ground, watched by Kirk who adds his threat to the luckless, recumbent, Jason. Maria expresses her disgust for both Jason and Tyrone. A flashy, red, sports car arrives. Hazel has arrived to collect a smiling Vik.

In the Rovers, Les is dressed for a night out with Sandra at a nice Italian restaurant. He tells a skeptical Sam that, although he and Sandra have just met, it's quality that counts, not quantity.

In Vik's flat, preparations are well under way for the surprise party, but Bobbi feels that Vik has been pre-occupied these last couple of weeks. Steve offers the explanation that some customers have been very demanding recently. Bobbi asks Steve if it's wise for her to move in with Vik, and Steve thinks it's a great idea...

Hazel and Vik are parked outside a burger restaurant. She's bought him an expensive-looking bracelet. Vik goes to buy burger and chips for them both when his phone rings - Steve. Hazel asks Vik if she should answer it and shock him. No.

Again chez Grimshaw. Eileen wonders if Todd has had sex with Candice. No. In spite of her own experiences with men, Eileen tells her son that, one day, someone will come along who will appreciate him. Jason appears, complete with a black eye. When Eileen learns what has happened, she thinks that justice has been done, for he appears to have his brains in his underpants. Jason tells his Mum that he's leaving, right now.

Back at the party, everyone is waiting for the birthday boy, and Bobbi is becoming agitated at his being so late. Steve, who knows what is going on, tries again to phone Vik, but to no avail.

Jason comes out of the house, and meets Candice and Sarah who are waiting for him. Candice wants to see Jason again, but he makes it clear that she's just a kid and he never wants to see her again, before disappearing into the night, with Sarah's words 'You're a pig!' echoing in his ears.

Hazel drives Vik home and Vik invites her in. He'll phone Bobbi and call off their dinner date. Hazel agrees.

Meanwhile, the hapless Kirk is trying to impress Bobbi, who can't even remember his name and why he's there in the first place.

Just as Hazel and Vik are about to enter the flat, her phone goes. Her husband, John. She has to go, but reminds Vik to remove his bracelet before he goes home. Vik's phone goes - Steve, who warns him of what is awaiting him. Hazel departs and Vik opens the door to his flat...

Vik enters to a great welcome from the assembled guests, apart from Bobbi, who is livid at his being so late. She demands to know where he's been and what he's been doing. He hasn't been working; she knows that. "Why do I bother?" she asks him, while the guests remain silent. "Don't!" is Vik's reply. Bobbi leaves hurriedly and Steve offers his pal a can of beer: "Happy Birthday, mate!"

Sarah then asks if the only reason she wants to get back with Todd is to get her own back on Jason, Candice then asks why she is asking all these questions and Sarah tells her she does not know and tells Candice she keeps changing her mind and one minute it is all Jason and the next it is all Todd again, Candice then tells Sarah that sometimes you go off a lad when you have been with him and she should know that.

Out on the Street, as Sarah is taking Bethany for a walk Candice says oh no as she notices Jason at the other side, Sarah tells her it does not matter if she has gone off him and Candice tells her that she does not want him to see her going into their house, she tells Sarah she will walk round the corner with her. Then Jason comes and says hi but Candice ignores him leaving Sarah to say hi instead, he then asks Candice if she has lost her voice and she tells Sarah to come on.

As Jason walks up the street, he bumps into Maria who says hi and asks him if that was his new girlfriend she saw him with and Jason tells her no as it was just something that happened, Maria tells him he just could not resist it and she tells Jason that fellows are all the same. Todd then asks why and Candice asks him what he means so he tells her is she sorry she went with Jason or because of what happened after, Candice tells him all of it, but Todd tells her really because he is the one she fences and Candice tells him she has said she is sorry and it is not fare. Todd then tells her it would be nice if she meant it and Candice tells him to forget it and they are finished and he agrees and she tells him she is glad she went with Jason and walks out.

Back at Karen and Steve's flat, Bobbi tells them she should go round to see Vic, but both Karen and Maria tell her she can't and Karen tells her she does not go after him and he comes after her, Maria tells Bobbi that if she dies that then he will always have her where he wants her and Maria looks at Karen and they both agree she is hopeless. Bobbi then asks how is going to come after her if he does not know where she is and Karen asks if she has his number and Bobbi says yes so Karen says she will phone him and then he will know where you are but Bobbi is still hooked on going round there. Both Maria and Karen tell her not to go and Maria tells Karen she thought she was soft but Bobbi is softer and Karen agrees and Bobbi tells them she just wants him back.

Back at Vic's flat, Dev is telling him something that he has never to tell Geena, he tells him that he has had affairs with married women and Vic asks how many but Dev says the point is not how many it is that he knows they can be exciting with the added ingredient of the danger the secret phone calls or what ever, he then says to Vic that they always end in disaster and it is divorce time or she gets tired and he will be stuck un the middle so Dev tells him to get out of the triangle.

Back at Karen and Steve's flat, Karen has phoned Vic to tell him that if he wants to talk to Bobbi then she is round there, Bobbi then asks if he is coming so Karen asks him if he is and he says ok.

Monday 25 February

I typed this at approx 8.30pm. It is now 10.15pm and I am wondering why my report hasn't appeared. I have just realised why - I logged on, took in the messages and closed down the browser before sending. The report is somewhere in my machine ... gone for ever. So, luckily I still have my notes. Oh senility is setting in!

I do recall saying though, although a year older since my last report - still the fastest reporter!!

Emily gives Ken and second hand brief case for him to start his first day back as a school teacher. Deirdre checks with him that he has his dinner and handkerchief!

Deirdre confides in Blanche that she thinks he is a little nervous. Blanche recalls that on Deirdre's first day about an hour after leaving her, Blanche had a phone call from the school, that Deirdre had been "caught short" and could she come in with some clean underwear!

Norris is sorting Rita out with maps and mobile phone for her birthday trip with Emily, Blanche and Betty.

Sally comes into the shop and is surprised that the alarm doesn't go offer when she opens the door. She finds Jason in there half naked. (Wait it for girls!)

Out on the road Rita thinks she is going the wrong way. Blanche who has the map says she is taking her on a short cut.

Vik entertains Hazel in his flat. He tells her that he and Bobbie have split up.

Rita stops the car and they realise they are lost. Blanche says it is because Rita doesn't know her left from her right. They see a guy running towards them. He stops and says he has run out of petrol. He is on his way to see his mother in hospital. Rita agrees to take him to a garage.

Sally tells Eileen about Jason. She felt she had to tell her despite his wishes. Eileen just wishes he would come home.

Betty, Blanche and Emily suggest that they take the guy directly to the hospital. Rita is a bit suspicious of him, but cannot tell the others. When she says they are on their way to meet Deirdre they think she has gone barmy. Rita stops the car and says that he has a bag of money, and asks him to get out of the car. He then pulls a gun on them. He tells them all to get out of the car. Emily is so terrified she can't budge.

Eileen comes into the shop and tells Jason that he can't stop at Sally's shop again. She tells him that if he doesn't come home she will smash up his CD collection.

The police arrive at Rita's car just as the guy is trying to get Blanche out of the car. Rita hits him from behind with her handbag. The police arrest him.

Vik is in bed with Hazel (yuk)

The police tell Rita that she is brave and stupid. Police call for an ambulance, to check out the women. Emily is in shock. It has brought back the memories of when her Ernest was shot.

Jason returns home. Todd arrives home and says that he is not sleeping under the same roof as Jason. If Jason is staying, he will go.

Ken comes in from school. He tells Deirdre that he felt shaky at first, but he was ok. She continues chatting to him while working in the kitchen, and turns round and realises he has fallen asleep on the couch.

Todd accuses his mother of taking Jason's side. She says she knows what he did was wrong, but no girl is not worth wrecking a family for.

Rita and co. arrive back in the Rovers. Norris is not so sure whether they are not elaborating on the truth. Emily is still shaken. Norris sums things up by telling Rita that as birthdays go this one was quite eventful. Rita says with all the excitement she has quite forgotten about it. She thinks she must be getting old! Norris agrees!!! However he does drink a toast to the brave ladies.

Oh well - second time lucky!
