Deidre tells Dev about Sunita and Duggie. Dev thinks that he is too old for her.

Dennis reminds the boys that it is their mother's 40th birthday coming up. They need to do something special for her.

Peter turns up an hour late for work. He doesn't seem unduly worried. Rob says he will deduct an hour's pay from him. He still wants to get Rob's money back to him so that he can go out with Shelley again.

Candice and Sarah try to persuade the boy responsible for the graffiti in school to own up. He refuses.

Candice gets a call on her mobile, she is wanted at work. She skips school.

Dennis tells Steve, Vik and Janice about Eileen's birthday. Janice says a woman of 40 wants something really personal and feminine.

Duggie asks Betty to do an extra shift so that he can go out. When Shelley tells her he is going with Sunita, she thinks of him as a cradle snatcher.

Rob tells Peter that head office has told him there has been a better offer for the business. As a last act he gives Peter his cards.

Charlie asks Sarah where Candice is. She says that she went home sick.

Peter tells Shelley that he has been sacked. He tells her that he intends to put the money back.

Gina is having an argument with her mother.

Duggie asks Betty and Shelley which of his suits he should wear on his date.

Steve wants to know how Peter intends to return the money.

Sarah tells the boy responsible for the grafitti that she is not going to standby while her friend Todd takes the blame.

Steve and Vik joke with Eileen about still doing the job even though she is going to be older. As she leaves them, the sing (in football chant) four - nil; four - nil.

Duggie and Sunita are both dressed up for going out.

Steve suggests smashing Rod's car window and putting the money in.

Charlie gets a call from the head teacher. A boy has confessed to writing the grafitti.

Gina argues with her mother. Her mother thinks that Dev is not suitable. She argues that he is from a different background. The fact that he is Indian it won't suit. Gina says it is the man that she loves. Her mother says he is of a differnet religion. He will worship strange things.

Charlie and Matt come round to Eileen and Dennis to apologise to Todd. Denis thinks they should all bury the hatchet.

Duggie and Sunita enjoy a candlelight dinner in a resturant. They talk about family relationships. She says she likes being with her parents, but does not agree with arranged mariages. Duggie tells of his son Tom, the hairdresser. He would like to hear from him again.

Gina's mother likens Dev to when the GIs came over in the war. Women liked them because they were different. She asks Gina what she knows about Hindus, and what they eat and drink. She is not convinced when Gina tries to explain that he was born in Birmingham (Central England). The mother also says he will be in and out of the temple, worshiping things. Gina tells her to go. The Mother says if Gina goes with Dev she won't be part of the family.

Sunita tells Duggie how she likes mature men.

Peter tells Steve that he is going to do it now.

Gina tells Dev about the problmes with her mother. She says the problem as far as the mother is concerned is that he is a Hindu. He decides he is going to invite his parents to meet Gina.

Peter goes to force his way into Rob's car. The alarm starts. Peter manages to hide away.

Wednesday 3 October

For those of you expecting Janette today - sorry! She is having to work, so you have me again!

Eileen is feeling a bit down. Les shouts to her that maybe she is not getting enough! He asks about a party on Saturday. She is not aware of a party, because according to Les she is past her sell-by date.

Deidre asks Sunita how the date with Duggie went. She says nothing happened. They went for a meal, chatted and then he took her home.

Gina tells Dev that she will cook vegeterian for his parents. She wouldn't want to offend them, being Hindus, by serving meat. Dev says there is no need to put on any special, just be herself because they will love her.

Dev tells Sunita that if she is serious about Duggie, to be careful and don't get hurt.

Shelley meets with Peter. He explains that he couldn't get into the car to put the money back. Shelley thinks it is getting worse, breaking into a car.

Candice has bought a new top from the factory. She is showing it to Sarah who is not impressed. She says she is going out on Friday with some of the factory girls. She asks Sarah to cover for her again at school.

Gina's mother comes to see Gina. She wants to apologise. She claims that Gina doesn't understand. She calls her mother bigoted.

Shelley offers to help put the money back. Peter distracts Rob at the bar while she puts it into his jacket.

Gina apologises to Dev for her mother's behaviour. Dev says his parents are more relaxed.

Charlie tells the Head teacher that Luke (the boy who scrawled the graffiti in the classroom) that she has tried to encourage him from falling behind in class. Then Luke and his mother arrive. They recognise each other, it is her birth money (who she has only just met!), which makes Luke her brother.

Sunita and Duggie make another date.

Charlie explains to the Head about the relationship. Charlie says Luke should have spoken to her first before putting making the graffiti.

When Rob goes to leave the pub, she realises that she put the money in the wrong jacket.

Eileen dreams of all the things that she wished had done over the years.

Shelley tries to remember who's been sitting in the pub and whose jacket she might have put the money in. Shelley is convinced it is Les. Then they see Ken walking down the street in the jacket.

The Head thinks that Charlie and the mother ought to sort things out between them. Charlie still wants Luke punished.

Ken takes money out of his pocket in the shop much to his and Deidre's amazement. Peter rushes in claiming the money is his, but Ken wants an explanation.

Gina is dressed up ready for Dev's parents. They arrive. The mother is not impressed when Gina says she works for the local pub.

Ken says £5k is the exact amount stolen from the betting shop. He calls Peter a common thief.. Peter says if Ken had given him the money in the first place, he wouldn't have needed it.

Dev's mother looks in the kitchen at the food. She doesn't approve. The mother thinks Dev needs a strong woman with brains. She says it doesn't take much to pull pints. She doesn't want Dev to make a wrong decision.

As Dev's father is leaving he asks for the receipe for the food, although the mother is not so pleased at the thought.

After they have gone Gina says she is upset about Dev's mother.

Ken shouts to Peter to take responsibility in his life. He gives him an ultamateum to return the money by Friday or he will go to the police.

Written by Peter Mills Directed by Ian Bevitt

In Roy's Rolls, Janice presents Dennis with Eileen's "wish list", so that he can get something for her 40th birthday. Ken, again, threatens Peter with the police unless the £5,000 is given back to Rob today...

In the Corner Shop, Geena whines to Dev about their parental problems, but he has a business to run and things to do, so they'll talk later. Geena not pleased at his response.

Charlie moans to Matt that she's been rejected by her mother and that she's just found out about a half-brother, Luke, who sits in the front row of her English class. She's taking the morning off. Matt suggests that, if she needs a note, he'll get Gail to forge one for her.

In the Corner Shop, Sunita is serving behind the counter. Candice congratulates Eileen on her 50th birthday - well, she thinks all old folk look the same! Eileen storms off. Duggie, in the hubbub, shouts an invitation to Sunita to go out with him again.

Fred and Eve, back from honeymoon, notice the "Under New Management" sign above the bookies. Rob arrives, but doesn't know who the new owner is, but he's going to find out! Mr and Mrs Elliot take themselves off to the Rovers.

Inside the bookies, Rob finds Peter with his feet up on the office desk. Peter lights a cigar and it's not long before Rob finds out the new owner's identity - Peter. To add insult to injury, Peter offers Rob what he calls a "golden handshake" on his termination of employment - £5,000 - which Rob realizes is his own money. Rob isn't going to call the police, but he'll 'sort Barlow out', one day...

In the Rovers, Eve and Fred tell Maxine and Ashley about their wonderful cruise. Ashley tells Fred and Eve about his operation. Fred is delighted to hear that they may have a "babby" on the way soon and Ashley tells Fred that he and Maxine are great together. (Maxine looks a trifle perturbed.) Duggie welcomes Eve and Fred back - when can she start work again? Now. Eve meets Geena behind the bar; neither has seen or heard of Linda since the wedding... Sunita comes in and tells Duggie that she'll go out with him again. She tells Geena that, not to worry, Dev's parents will come round eventually. Peter tells Ken that everything is 'sorted'. He invites Shelley to perform the opening ceremony of his bookies and she agrees. Everyone is invited to attend.

Charlie's mother comes to see her at home and asks her to resign her post at the school; she doesn't think it a good idea for Charlie and Luke to be at the same school.

INTERVAL

Charlie and her Mum have a heart-to-heart talk. Charlie feels that her Mum has betrayed her and has taken the 'easy way out'. Charlie wants to get to know her Mum, but her Mum now has her 'other' family and doesn't want to know...

In the Corner Shop, Geena's mother arrives to see Dev. Of course (!), Mrs Gregory is not at all concerned about Dev's being Indian - it's just that he's, well, different. She tells him that, in these mixed-race partnerships, it's always 'the kiddies' who suffer and, of course, she'd like to be a grandmother one day. Her parting words are to the effect that, if Dev respects her daughter Geena, he'll leave her alone. Mrs 'Bigot' exits, leaving Dev to ponder such intolerance and bigotry...

Shelley opens the bookies. Duggie wonders where Peter, his ex-barman, has got the money from. Dennis tells Janice he can't afford any of the delights on Eileen's "wish list". However, Janice suggests that 'a cruise' could consist of a trip on a canal boat, with flowers and wine. Peter presents Shelley with a bracelet (the same one he tried to give her previously, which she refused!) and they exchange a couple of kisses, while Duggie looks on...

In the Rovers, Fred appears with a large bouquet of flowers for his wife, to whom he has been married for 4 weeks, 3 days. Eileen complains to Janice that Dennis hasn't remembered her birthday. (Janice has obviously taken Eileen's word for it that she didn't want a fuss - but Janice hasn't 'read between the lines'!) Matt finds Charlie in the Rovers, where she tells him about the news of her mother's visit - her Mum doesn't want to know her. Eve is worried about Linda. So is Geena...

In the (closed) Corner Shop, Dev and Vikram are sharing a few glasses of whisky. Dev sees the problem with Geena's mother as being all to do with her bigotry and that he'll have to do something about it. As Dev says to Vikram: 'Watch this space!'.

Sunday 7 October

Weatherfield as usual is isolated from real events. Before getting on with the update I would ask for a consideration of all who may be adversely affected but are innocent in both past and future wars.

In the cafe Jason and Todd have "prepared" a breakfast for Eileen as it is her 40th birthday. Croissants, Champagne (and Orange Juice which Roy reckons is an English concoction and onions around the boy's necks - oh la la!!. Later we see a banner hanging over the Grimshaw residence telling the world that it is her birthday - formerly the banner was a sheet on Jason's bed! Not keeping this birthday secret, especially as a brass band walks up playing amongst other tunes "Happy Birthday". Even later in the Rovers Dennis presents Eileen with her present - a real trip to Paris, just after her 40th and not just before but almost. She thanks Dennis and we are left wondering if Janice regrets turning Dennis down - perhaps he has a little romance after all. However she has Les - speaks volumes doesn't it.

Sunita and Duggie have arranged another date this evening - but when asked Geena turns down Duggie's request for a shift - sadly Betty has already phoned in ill and Duggie is short handed. And he continues to be more tongue tied than Sunita as if he was only about 15!!

Geena is unhappy, Dev has disappeared, allegedly to the Swinton shop (there's always trouble at the Swinton shop) but Geena does not believe him and chats it over with Sunita in the shop. She cannot stand the hassle being handed out on account of Dev's background from either family but Sunita tells her that Dev is used to it - they have both suffered all their life - and it has not bothered her until now?

Peter Barlow is finding it impossible to cope in the bookies as the lad has phoned in sick and dashes into the Rovers and co-erces Ken into helping him (anything to get away from a quiet drink with Blanche after all). Blanche extracts her pound of flesh - a fiver to buy some drinks. Peter is still operating under Skinner's licence at the moment. We see an unfamiliar face in Roy who with some help places a small bet on a nag with Hayley's name. It is an outsider but later he is rewarded with the news that he has won 40. In the bookies Peter tells Steve and Karen about the threat from the former manager and Les notes the oddity that Steve is able to frequent the place despite Peter's way with Karen!

Eve tracks Karen down but no-one seems worried about Linda's whereabouts. Karen cracks a joke about the search parties but no-one is laughing. Eve at least seems concerned about the disappearance.

Later in the Rovers Eve and Fred arrive - and Duggie sees her as his saviour and offers her time and a half! She accepts and then tells him that she is working anyway as she has swapped a shift with Shelley - so Duggie still has no way out. Sunita arrives and he explains - but she accepts the inconvenience - she could not convince Geena to cover the shift.

Finally Duggie points out to Eve that it is slow this evening and wonders if she can cope while he and Sunita have a bite in the back. Fred takes pity on him and offers to take over the bar whilst they eat. In the back Duggie is very nervous, laying the table and babbling over the poor arrangements. He had booked a table at Delphine's but had had to cancel it and he promised he would take her in the future. In the meantime Sunita decides to shut him up and gives him a kiss. This comes as a surprise but they both enjoy it and Duggie admits he has wanted to do it for a while. The tension drops as it would appear a relationship is about to start.

Meanwhile Geena has made her mind up. She is packed and moving out. Dev finally arrives and she announces her intentions. She cannot stand the hassle and it is over - after all he has not told the truth about his whereabouts today. He asks her to stop and reasonably points out that she wanted to tell her parents and meet his. And then he goes down on bended knee and asks her to marry him. She cannot believe her ears and he then extracts a ring box and she stupidly asks him what it is. And within seconds she wants to wear the ring - and they are engaged.

Monday 8 October

Gina comes down to breakfast which Dev is preparing. He teases her as to who is behind him, whether it is Vera or Janice that he is engaged to. He suggests to invite both sets of parents round at the same time and give them new of the engagement. That way they will have to behave or they will be showing themselves up.

Peter is cleaning the windows of the bookies. Vik jokes with him that a couple of weeks ago he would have said that it is not part of his job description.

Eileen persaudes Vik to give her the morning off so she can go shopping for her weekend in Paris.

Gina goes into the cafe and meets the girls from the factory. She casually asks what they got up to over the weekend. She then shows them her ring.

Dev tells Vik, Sunita and Deidre about his engagement.

Peter tells Ken that all is on again with Shelley.

Richard finds Gail in the cafe with Audrey. He invites her away for a break. She says she would love to, but for the kids.

Duggie tells Gina he is worried if it is catching . First Eve, and now her (getting engaged).

Dennis comes in to the Rovers for a beer. Duggie thinks he should be on wine getting ready for Paris.

Dev explains to Vik that the reason he is inviting his parents over for a meal is to tell them about the wedding.

Dennis reminds Ryan that he owes £200 for the car stereos. He threatens him unless the money is paid by Friday.

Ryan comes into Baldwin's office in the factory, while Janice is counting the wages. He wants a loan of £200. She says Baldwin would not allow it.

Fred asks Audrey if she can recall when Mike and Linda were arguing at the wedding.

Eileen tells Dennis she has bought some clothes for Paris, but intends shopping for more while in Paris.

Richard asks Audrey if Gail mentioned anything about the offer of a holiday. He wonders if he was a bit over the top. Audrey assures him it was only her thinking of her kids that prevented her from going.

Gina and Dev have arranged for their parents to come over on Wednesday night for dinner.

Dev invites everybody in the pub to an engagement party at the weekend.

Ginas asks Eve if she has heard from Linda. She says she hasn't. However Audrey tells her that Mike told Fred that he was divorcing her.

Eve confronts Fred for not telling her that Linda was about to divorce. Fred tells her that Linda had an affair which Mike's son, Mark and Harvey Reuben. Eve is concrned something is not right.

Friday 12 October

Written by Joe Turner Directed by Tony Prescott

Fred drops Eve off at the Rovers for her work. She is upset at the disappearance of Linda, her daughter, and she accuses Fred of not understanding her concern, especially when Fred says that he's also concerned about Mike, his friend - and the very person who slapped Linda!

Outside the pub, Fred is having a rest in his car when Ashley taps the window, giving him a fright. Fred hasn't slept well last night, he tells Ashley, but he's tried to apologise to Eve who won't listen.

Eileen, full of the joys of life, is packing for her holiday in Paris with Dennis. She promises Dennis that she'll show him how much she loves him while they're there. Todd, washing the dishes, tells his Mum that "je t'aime" means I love you...

At Gail's house, it's the usual rush in the morning. Gail is ironing. Richard arrives with some brochures of holidays, but he'll have to wait his turn for her attention. The kids leave, and Richard wonders if Audrey is fit enough to watch the children while they're on holiday.

Some gossip at the factory. Fiz states that she thinks that Baldwin has 'done Linda in' since she betrayed him. Furthermore, if 'her' Tyrone betrayed her, she'd... Her Tyrone? Only a matter of time. Karen apologises to Ryan about the girls' gossip - only a laugh.

In the Rovers, Gail and Richard pore over the holiday brochures. Eve throws Fred his wee present back - a box of Belgian chocolates. All she wants is her daughter back, not some chocolates. Fred not best pleased. Richard tells Gail that he doesn't like flying, but it's his treat - wherever Gail wants to go, that's ok by him.

At the factory, Janice is in charge. Lunchtime. Eileen arrives to ask her a favour - can she keep an eye on the boys while she's away in Paris? Of course. Janice wonders what Les has planned for their anniversary; after all, Dennis is not the only romantic man on the Street, and she wants to be surprised...

In the Rovers, Toyah is looking forward to the engagement party of Geena and Dev. Geena confides to her that her Mum is against the marriage because Dev is an Asian. Toyah thinks that Dev would be every Mum's dream man for a daughter. Fred is moaning to Ashley that his marriage is falling apart, once again. Eve is still upset at there being no news of Linda, and she blames Mike...

Eileen and Dennis are off to Paris, leaving Todd and Jason at home with dire warnings to behave. Les quietly warns Dennis not to go up the Eiffel Tower, just in case the thin air might cause him to propose marriage. The taxi departs for the airport. Todd and Jason look happy - as they say, 'the weekend starts here'.

INTERVAL

In the Rovers, Eve tells Ryan how much she is worried at not having heard from Linda. Bobbi is looking forward to the engagement party for Geena and Dev and that she's going into town to look for something special to wear. Toyah blurts out that Bobbi wouldn't like to meet Geena's Mum, but Geena immediately springs to her Mum's defence. Toyah apologises for 'having obviously misunderstood'. Karen mentions the theory about Mike having 'done Linda in', which is overheard by Audrey, who warns her about such malicious talk. Peter tells Eve that it was Mike who more or less murdered his sister (Susan) and that he is a 'bad lot'. Ryan confronts Peter, telling him not to wind his Mum up, but Peter says that they'll all know about Baldwin soon enough.

Todd and Jason talk while Jason cleans his motor-bike and they talk about the weekend without Mum. Jason advises Todd to make full use of the double bed. But Todd asks Louise, on her own, about how Candice feels about him; Louise will only say that, as far as Candice is concerned, he is 'God's gift'...

At the factory, while the girls are at lunch, Eve arrives to see Ryan; could Linda be at Nita's? No, he's already checked. Eve, distraught, barges in to Mike's office to 'look for clues', much against Ryan's advice. Janice appears and the situation calms. However, Eve wants to know where she can find Mike, but Janice doesn't have any idea.

Gail is packing for her holiday with Richard. Audrey is there and Gail offers to contact Martin to look after the children, but Audrey insists that is not necessary - she's looking forward to a busy house again and, yes, she still misses Alma.

Back at the Rovers, Toyah tells her Mum that she's so proud of her for running the factory in Mike's absence. Janice asks Toyah if she thinks that her Dad (Les) would like the group Guns 'n Roses, for she'd like to get tickets for their concert as a surprise. Toyah says that, well, the group all have long hair and they're loud, so that should be perfect! Fred and Eve eventually start talking again, Fred telling her that "your worries are my worries". The police arrive and ask for Mrs Elliott. They've found Mike's Jaguar car in a river in Yorkshire, but they don't know yet if anyone is inside it...

Friday 19 October

Written by Phil Ford Directed by John Anderson

Ashley is off to the races, leaving Maxine to go to her work at the salon. She looks glum and not a little preoccupied...

Jason is polishing his motor-bike again. Todd says that he's a poser, but Candice thinks he has style.

Sally arrives at the garage with Sophie and Rosie and the girls apologise to their Dad for having told him that he's always in a bad mood. Kevin tells them that he's sorry too, and he'll try harder. Sally adds that 'trying is not good enough'.

Mike is surprised, but pleased, to hear that they are, as Deirdre puts it, on his side. Ken does admit to Mike: 'You may be many things, but you're not a murderer!' Mike thinks that Linda will be enjoying his misery just now, wherever she is...

In the Kabin, Rita, Betty and Blanche are having a good gossip about Mike and Linda, exchanging what little bits of information they have. Blanche adds that, in France, this alleged murder would be a crime of passion. Fizz enters and finds Tyrone looking for a magazine. He doesn't need a magazine - he's got her, to do as he likes with, she states. Tyrone wants her to take things easy; he still misses Maria. As Tyrone and Fizz leave, the three ladies enjoy the idea of Tyrone being torn between two lovers!

In the salon, a tearful Maxine off-loads her worry about who the baby's father is to Audrey, who suggests a second pregnancy test to confirm the first. Maxine refuses, but she can't continue to live a lie. She has to know who the father is - Ashley or Matt.

In the Rovers, Molly is telling Kevin a few home truths, as a mate of course. She tells him that he has to realise that Sally is not his any more and he has to 'let go', and grow up. Ryan is still seething with anger at Mike and Eve has to restrain him from going to see him - the police will deal with him.

In the Corner Shop, Fizz sees Tyrone again, this time to tell him that every boyfriend she's had only wanted 'the one thing' and, after that, they had all dumped her. She tells Tyrone that, if he wants Maria, she's welcome to him, and Fizz tells him they're finished.

Back in the Rovers, Mike enters; Eve avoids serving him. Molly is still on at Kevin to get on with his life. If he holds on to the past, he'll only hurt the girls. Janice is looking very unhappy. Eileen and Dennis come in and invite her to go with them to the Bowling tonight, but Janice is not in the mood. Mike offers Fred a drink, but he refuses (under the gaze of Eve). Mike understands. The police arrive and ask Mike to come down to the police station; he goes with the police, saying he has nothing to hide.

INTERVAL

At the police station, the police make it clear to Mike that, as far as they're concerned, no crime has been committed, but they want the 'full picture'. Mike says that Linda has just 'done a runner'. He is amazed to learn that the police know about Linda's infidelity with his son, Mark.

In the Rovers, Blanche needs another drink to get over the shock of Mike's having been taken away by the police. Rita can scarcely believe what she's hearing. Janice asks Ryan what is going on, but he denies any knowledge of what she's talking about. Eve continues to hope that Linda is still alive - hope is all she has left...

Kevin spies Sally and Martin having a discussion outside Sally's house. Martin is going to look after the girls, which they seem pleased about, while Sally goes to the cash and carry. Kevin intervenes, saying that he can watch the girls and he takes them off to 'watch him work'.

Matt sees Charlie off to her work. Maxine waylays Matt and invites him into the empty salon. She lets him know that she's pregnant, but he insists that the baby is probably Ashley's.

Tyrone catches up with Fizz as she's going into the factory and presents her with a box of her favourite chocolates as a peace-offering; he explains that Maria was the first girl that he'd 'known' and therefore he feels she is special. With Tyrone and Fizz visible in the background, Jason asks for Dennis' advice - he fancies a girl, but it's the ex-girlfriend of a mate. Dennis assumes, rightly, that he's talking about Maria, and tells him that Tyrone seems to have moved on but, he's a mate, so there is a certain etiquette...!

Back at the salon, Maxine and Matt heatedly discuss the options. A DNA test can be done, but only after the child is born. Matt doesn't want both their marriages to be destroyed. Audrey enters and concludes that Maxine has told Matt, who's incensed that Maxine has told someone. 'You could have put a notice in the window, along with your blow-dries!'

In the police station, the police probe ever deeper into Mike's marital disasters and Linda's affair with Harvey Ruben. Had Mike ever hit Linda? They want to search his flat, just as a matter of routine.

Jason is polishing his bike again; he has the afternoon off, he says.

In the garage, Sophie and Rosie are bored. And hungry. Keven tells them that their Mum will be back soon but Sophie tells him that they'll 'be dead by then'. Kevin gives them some money and they set off for the corner shop, crossing the road just as Jason is driving his motor-bike along the wet street. Martin shouts a warning, and Jason ends up skidding his bike on the wet cobbles, landing on the ground...

Sunday 21 October

Hi Corrie Addicts! I'm back again whilst Richard is on a well deserved break in Italy. We seem to be having another "feast" of episodes, there was an extra one last Thursday, and a double whammy tomorrow.

The scene opens on the Street, with Jason and his motorbike on the ground, and Kevin, Rosie and Sophie nearby, with Martin rubbing his elbow. "Girls alright Kev"? enquires Martin. "Showing off that's wot" says Eileen to Jason, who by now is standing having removed his helmet. Dennis is in the background and remarks that Martin saved Rosie and got a bashed arm for his trouble. Eileen marshals her troupes and tells them to get indoors and leave "that stinking thing" (the motorbike) where it is.

We cut to Mike Baldwin down at Weatherfield Police Station "helping with enquiries". This time he's got his female solicitor present. The flat has been searched. The D.I. asks him to repeat what happened the last time he saw Linda at the Paisley Bridge hotel. She took off in his car and Mike didn't report it, so how come the car ended up in the river which is 5 miles from town. Mike's response is "Spite".

Jason's Mum, Eileen is having a go, blaming Dennis for buying the bike in the first place, Jason for being an idiot. Dennis says he'll square it with Kev and that the police won't be involved - he goes to leave and she screeches a him "Don't walk out on me" to which he retorts "Well don't treat me like something you've just stepped in".

Ken Barlow and Adam arrive back at Mike's flat to find the police searching it. "Got a warrant" enquiries Ken. At that moment a uniformed officer steps into the lounge and asks the D.S. to come and look at what he's found. The D.S. advises Ken and Adam to leave.

Sally has arrived on the scene, round at the garage. "You idiot I asked you to make sure they were safe" she screams at the hapless Kevin. He admits "I took my eyes off them for a second, the phone rang" "Well you nearly didn't have any daughters to look after" retorts Sally and marches off. Dennis appears and says to Kev "Looks like we're both in the dog house mate" Kev replies that !he'll not make that mistake again and neither will Jason". Dennis says "he'll appreciate it".

Dr Matt and his alcoholic school-teacher wife are at the bar in the Rovers. Eve and Fred are in the background with Linda's brother. Audrey arrives and asks for a G&T. Betty informs her that Matt's on his 3rd double inside the hour. Audrey decides to leave the G&T and rushes off.

Back at the Nick, Mike is being informed that Linda was not just his wife but also his business partner and that he's killed her to avoid a payout. The D.S. who was at the flat enters the room and whispers in the hecklers ear. He resumes his interview and informs Mike "You told us she'd taken her passport, so how come it's here, as he waves the passport in its scene of crime plastic pouch. Mike is duly cautioned and charged with Linda's murder.

Meanwhile Audrey has rushed round to the Peacocks and as she enters asks Max if Ash is around since Matt's getting drunk at the pub. Don't say anything cautions Audrey to a tearful Max as Ash enters and is sympathetic, assuring Max that in time she will get a baby, now he's hap the op. Sniffling she says "But I am pregnant and I'm going to have a baby". Ash is bemused but decides she's been acting funny and it's down to her hormones.

Deidre and Ken are chatting in the shop, she refuses to believe that Mike's a murderer. Ken tells her the police found something whilst he and Adam were at Mike's flat.

In the Charge Room the data is being given for the tape and Mike agrees he was born on 16.2.42 and that his full name is Michael Vernon Baldwin. For the benefit of the tape the officers state that he is under caution. "You told us she'd been back and taken it (the passport)". "Well" says Mike "Everyone kept going on at me so I said she'd been back and taken her passport to shut them up". "OK says the D.I. but why not tell us the truth?" Mike replies "Lies grow, you know how it is" "So you've been violent to your wife" "I was provoked and I lost my temper" admits Mike. "You know what she's like". "But Linda was in fear of her life and thought you were going to kill her" says the D.I.

Fiz, Tyrone and Jason. Jason wants to know if Tyrone would mind if he asks Maria out. "No" says Tyrone "You've allus been fond of her and now I've got Fiz and have moved on, so do what you like".

Kevin and the District Nurse are sitting in the Rovers. Kevin admits he was jealous of Martin and that's why he wanted to look after his girls. "Pack your bags and move away" is her advice.

Janice and Dennis meet in the Street. He thanks her for standing up for him and wonders if he can buy her a drink, she shakes her head. "Can't mates by each other a drink now" he says "Well now you know I made a fool of myself" says Janice "and we're more than mates and that's wrong". Dennis feels he should still be able to buy her a drink.

Ash is just coming out of his front door with Max behind, all he wants to do is tell everyone. Audreyt is passing and cautions them to wait.

Kev comes to apologise Martin who is at Sally's. He says he hopes they will be really happy and goes to shake hands, but Martin is unable due to a sprained wrist.

Down at the Police Station the hectoring continues. "You hated her, spending all your money, she didn't love you, you didn't love her - did you, you hated her. Divorce would cost you. You moved money out of your account. Did you know that since Linda disappeared not one penny piece has moved from her account. Her shoe we found in your car, she didn't dump the car." accuses the D.I. Mike says "She was making a fool out of me, all these men on the side". The D.I. continues "You really hated her, wanted her dead?" "Yes" shouts Mike.

Back at the Rovers Blanche is saying to Rita and Betty, "The police found something at Mike's flat" "Incriminating?" "Don't know but he's still down at the station".

At the Rover's bar, Fred is over the moon that he's going to be a Granddad. Glances pass between Max and Matt, who's continuing to drink.

Classis shot of cell door closing with Mike inside, protesting.

The episode ends.

So folks get ready for a double dose on Monday night 7.30 - 8pm and then 8.30 to 9pm.

Friday 26 October

Written by Phil Ford Directed by David Kester

Janice wakens in bed, with a man's arm around her; she thinks it's Dennis at first, but it's Les, back from his all-night taxi run to Brentworth. He tells her that Terry Duckworth is in Brentworth Jail, charged with attempted murder. Les wants to make love to Janice, but she offers him a fry-up instead.

At Eileen's, Dennis is brooding. Eileen wants to know when Jason is bringing Maria round to meet the family - they're very careful when it comes to women, she says. Dennis blames his dreaming on a 'dodgy pint' and leaves for work.

At the B&B, Vera tells Tyrone that she should never have caused the row with Jack, who then appears. Vera thinks that he's changed his mind about not seeing Terry, but he hasn't - he's come to take her home.

In the Kabin, Blanche and Audrey are talking about Terry to Rita. Mike enters, spoiling their gossip. Blanche notices a letter from New Zealand - from Anthony? Yes, but it's private! Janice comes in and tells Mike about Jimmy Sykes' breaking into the factory last night and Dennis' rescuing her. Mike receives two nuisance calls on his mobile while in the shop...

Back at the B&B, Vera tries to persuade Jack that they have to stand by Terry. Jack refuses point blank - if Terry got a life sentence, that would be a blessing.

Charlie, outside her house, notices that Luke is there again on the street. (It's half-term, so the schools are on holiday.) Matt offers to speak to him, but Charlie says he'll get bored with whatever he's doing. Matt again suggests moving house, but it'll take more than a spotty teenager for her to move house.

Dennis, at the garage, is trying to work on a car while Janice, in the background, is enjoying a cigarette at the factory door. Les arrives and invites Dennis for a pint later - on him. Dennis is non-committal. Les tells Dennis that he's going to get something very special for Janice; Dennis wonders if it'll be a microwave, to go with the deep-fat frier!

In the prison, Vera meets Terry, who learns that he's been in the national press - famous at last! Vera, however, is worried about her son.

In the Rovers, Geena finds Shelley joking about Linda's disappearance, and warns her not to joke about her friend.

Terry protests his innocence to his Mum. It's a complicated story, he says, but he claims that he's being framed by the police for something he didn't do, by the cop in charge of the case, whose wife Terry had been seeing...

INTERVAL

Luke again passes Charlie's house and she stops him to ask what he's doing. He admits that he's hanging around hoping to see Sarah.

In the prison, Terry tries to convince Vera that he's telling the truth and that the cop, Reardon, has decided to frame Terry for the attempted murder. Terry tells his Mum that he's sunk, for the cops all pull together...

In Charlie's house, she's talking to Luke and trying to get to know him, as a half-sister, not as a teacher. Luke says it's only chemistry, and Charlie corrects him - it's biology. She then tells him that she'd love to have had a brother.

In the Rovers, Mike thanks Dennis for his help in stopping Jimmy Sykes wrecking the factory, and Janice pleads with him not to tell Les - he'd only make a fuss. Mike agrees that it'll be their secret. Rita confides to Audrey that she's been invited, by Anthony, to New Zealand, and asks Audrey what she would do. Audrey can't advise Rita, but Rita has already decided to stay 'where she belongs', here. They chink glasses - 'here's to belonging!' Janice and Dennis have a talk about what to do after their night of passion. Janice thinks they should follow their feelings, but Dennis isn't sure - people get hurt. Eileen arrives, Janice leaves.

Terry tells Vera that he's tried to be a better person and never meant this to happen. His Mum is the only one who loves him and he breaks down sobbing.

Charlie asks Luke to stay for lunch, but he thinks not. He wants to know why Charlie turned up in his family life. She just wants to make friends. Matt arrives and Luke leaves. She tells Matt to 'give it time'.

In the Rovers, Mike tells Eve to call off her Rottweiler of a son, Jimmy, who's been stalking him. Evelooks quite pleased, even managing a smile, as he leaves the pub.

Janice sits at the table in her house and takes off her rings, just as Dennis appears to say sorry for letting her think their love-making was just a one-night stand. He can't get her out of his mind, and they end up in another passionate clinch.

Outside the prison, Jack asks Tyrone what he would do in the circumstances. Tyrone still would stand by his mother, but he says Jack is right to abandon Terry who, Jack says, is pure evil. Vera comes out of the prison and pleads with Jack - they've got to help him.

Sunday 28 October

Busy week - I gather there were extra episodes and I have not yet caught up with the storylines so much of tonight made little sense. Nice new update from Gareth and thanks to Amanda for standing in last Sunday. I could still do with some volunteers - particularly to take over responsibility for Sundays on a permanent basis.

Anyway events in Weatherfield are sponsored by Cadbury's Crunchie, whilst they were scripted by Jo O'Keefe and directed by David Kester.

Vera is bemoaning Terry's hopes - a poor solicitor, a bunch of dodgy coppers. Tyrone remarks that Mike is bound to have a good solicitor and Vera is going to spend the family fortune (do they have one) on a better solicitor.

Mike arrives at work on his phobile moan - caller does not want to talk and we see Linda's other brother (names lacking due to absence) in a phone box watching the disturbance he is causing to the Baldwin lifestyle. This scene was noiseless so was missed entirely by my daughter, ITV you are not thinking of the disabled!!

Rita has decided to consign Anthony to the discard pile so is off for a walk - Audrey goes with her. Rita has her business and friends and her courting days are over.

Dennis is looking after a bike for a friend and Janice pops to tell Les that his breakfast is ready. Eileen runs her hands all over Dennis and Janice seems bothered although I cannot understand why. (PS. I see Dennis and Janice have both been playing away in my absence - it becomes clear later in the episode).

Vera is wandering by telling Maria about Tyrone's wonderful support in this trying time (what has R'Terry done this time and Vera must need her head examining after the kidney scam and the motor car that killed R'Judeh - let alone the earlier troubles he inflicted on his parents, does this woman really have the memory accorded to goldfish?).

Eileen has invited Maria round for tea with Jason - her new boyfriend - and Vera becomes aware of the situation. Vera is not surprised - he is a nice boy.

Blanche, Ken and Emily are discussing Terry. Ken is concerned for Jack and Vera but Blanche reckons he is bound to be guilty (unlike Deirdre who was innocent of course).

Geena has a poster for the Halloween entertainment at the Rovers - Orlando is a hypnotist and psychic. Blanche and Emily do not think much of the entertainment. Dev's mother appears in the Rovers and invites Geena for lunch - as a little secret for now. Geena looks worried.

Vera arrives at Mike's for some advice. Even Mike knows about the trouble Terry is in. She wants to know a good solicitor. Mike gives Vera the obvious advice - do not spend the money. Vera reckons Terry has been set up by bent policemen. Even Vera thinks Mike should be given the benefit of the doubt. Mike hands over his solicitor's card - she is one of the best, but she is not cheap. Mike receives another wrong number call.

Sunita, Vik and Geena are discussing the planned lunch meeting. Vik reckons she is being softened up - Auntie is a canny lady. Vik wants to know if Dev has decided on a best man, Sunita remarks that (and presumably she is a bridesmaid) that he has to be smart, intelligent and well organised - which rules Vik out. Geena is not going to be scared off.

Later Dev arrives at the Rovers and asks after Geena to be told she has gone shopping. Vik reminds about the wedding and Sunita points out that he is angling to be best man, Vik's response is to point out that her lunch break is over! On the way out she calls Duggie "Tiger" and he gives a growl.

Rita, Audrey, Emily and Blanche recall their departed husbands. As Audrey notes they have all loved and lost and they raise glasses. (Anthony himself was not a great character but I did like the 2 or 3 comic pieces with Norris - rather entertaining).

Auntie Irmla (she has a job as the resident non-European solicitor in The Archers) takes Geena into a "classy" restaurant offers to let her choose the wine which Geena refuses (oh go on Geena, just choose the most expensive - make her pay). Geena feels strange - Dev not knowing that she is there. Dev's mother wants to know about Geena - is she going to continue working in the bar. Geena enjoys working and she is not going to rely on Dev. Geena will discuss future arrangements with Dev when the time is right - not his mother.

Linda's brother storms into Mike's flat and they struggle and argue - they believe he knows what has happened to Linda and Mike is denying any knowledge, although apparently he has lied about some aspects of the story so far in relation to the passport (allegedly collected at some point when I went away).

Geena and Dev's mother get along badly - mother would like to see Dev married to someone more suitable. Geena lets fly but she lives in the real world and dumps her share of the meal on the table. Mother asks Geena to stay a little longer, smiles and says they should start again.

Mike is recounting Jimmy's visit to the flat at the Rovers. Fred asks Mike not to join him - Eve is about to arrive. Audrey and Ken agree that Mike does not deserve this. As Fred is sympathising with Mike Eve arrives and rows with Fred. Fred tells Eve that Mike has had an unpleasant experience but she reminds him of his promise not to talk to Mike and storms off.

In the garage Janice and Dennis are kissing. (On her income how can Janice afford that haircut - do the production team have no say in the appearance of cast members?). Dennis is torn. Tyrone blunders in and makes comments about keeping his hands busy (but on motorbikes). Janice departs and then Tyrone. Tyrone is wandering around with Fiz. They meet Maria who chats about Vera and Fiz claims her property. Maria is summoned to tea with Jason. Maria looks back with regret.

Eve demands to be taken home by Fred but he wants to sort things out with her and Mike - he wants to talk about it but she does not. They love each other and Fred decides to take Eve to see Mike and to listen to his story.

Dev's mother and Geena are leaving the restaurant and Geena makes an appeal that Dev be allowed to live his life. Mother-in-law-to-be suggests she needs to go hat hunting. Geena corrects her - a sari is needed - it is to be Hindu wedding with a Christian blessing - it is what they both want and it is not Dev's idea.
