Wednesday 2 May

Toyah has reverted to being trapped in the house and jumps in terror when Les breaks a plate in the kitchen. She hates the thought that Phil Simmons was in their house and was going to do it again. She runs upstairs. Peter comes calling. Janice tells him Toyah is best left alone for the moment and thanks him for his help.

Over in the cafe, Ken tells Roy he's proud of Peter. Alma joins them. She hasn't heard the news and is clearly distracted. She bumps into Curly and tells him she won't be in work today. Martin is also there with the kids. They wonder why he's going round for his tea when it's not the non-weekend. He lets on they have something to tell them but won't say what. Curly checks that Roy will be at the election debate tonight. He says he will and comments that the opposition candidate looks good. Audrey doesn't appreciate him.

She meanwhile is missing the Spanish sun and suggests she and Alma move over there. Frank can come too if she wants. She apologises for her words the other day. It was a bit of a shock but she is happy for Alma. She deserves some happiness after the tough times she's been through.

The Gazette is still touting the smear scare. Mat isn't happy but Gail thinks it will bring people in for testing. Martin strolls in and checks it's all OK for tonight. He tells Gail the kids know there's something up. They agree they want to tell them the news together and have no idea how they'll take it.

At the Rovers, Audrey asks Ken and Deirdre if they'll be at the debate, but Ken has planned a celebration for Peter. He gets a free pint from Betty. He wasn't scared, he just acted on impulse. Duggie tells him the Gazette have been on the phone. They want an interview with the local hero. He's not interested.

Audrey has arrived back home and is complaining to Alma about voter apathy. It's clear that Alma hasn't moved since Audrey left and she forces a confession out of her. She may have a growth.

Rita and Emily discuss Toyah's recent attack. Emily's glad she has a man in the house. Rita takes some time to recognise this description of Norris. David and Sarah are in the Kabin too. He's dead excited about tonight. The only news he can think they'll have is that Martin and Gail are getting back together. Sarah is more realistic. Maybe Martin is moving to Dubai with Rebecca.

Interval

Alma has told Audrey the whole story. She agrees to keep it confidential. Alma hasn't told anyone else, not even Frank.

At the Battersby's, the police arrive and tell them that Phil Simmons has been charged. He's denying it, but they'll take a DNA test and get the results in a couple of days.

David is beaming in anticipation at the Platt's dinner table.

Audrey arrives late to the debate. Curly is looking very anxious. The opposition candidate is finishing his speech. He says that the community has grown stale and needs a change. He makes a snide comment about Audrey's lateness. Emma takes her badge off. The trip to Spain is mentioned. He won't waste money on foreign trips but return a sense of purpose to Weatherfield. Audrey hasn't read Curly's notes and speaks ad hoc. (we don't hear this).

The kids can't stand it any longer. Sarah asks Martin if he's going to Dubai. No. David can think of only one other option. So you're moving back in with us? Gail explains. They know that she and Martin decided not to live together any more. Well now it's official. They're divorced. Was that all the fuss? Sarah leaves.

Audrey finishes her speech. I hope you'll do your best for me and vote for me. No, comes from the audience. Curly asks for questions. Someone asks about the state of the children's playground. Audrey says the council's current priority is housing, so she can't do anything about it. A woman asks for more police on the street, citing the recent rape. The opposition candidate will make this his top priority (is this locally-controlled?) At this point, Audrey says she isn't feeling well and leaves.

Martin and Gail are still explaining. Martin assures David they'll carry on as they have been. He asks for ice-cream.

Curly reminds the audience of Audrey's years of commitment to the community, and of Alf before her. The opposition thinks it's easy to rely on past glories. Curly retorts that it's easy to rely on easy promises by a very young and ambitious politician with an arsenal of glib phrases. (laughs from the audience). He doesn't think they should get personal. Curly points out he was getting personal with Councillor Roberts and if he can't take it, he shouldn't dish it out. Curly sums up by asking if they want to replace a tradition of public service and hard work for the community by a smooth talker in a shiny suit. They should consider what they'd be losing.

Audrey is back home. She doesn't' want to talk about the meeting but admits it went terribly. She couldn't think straight. She makes Alma talk to her again.

The people at the debate make a triumphant return to the Rovers, calling Curly the best politician in Weatherfield. Has he not thought of standing himself? Charlie and Mat are there. She tells him that Toyah is terrified Phil will come back seeking revenge. Gail and Martin arrive. Emma tells Curly that Audrey doesn't deserve him. She clearly can't be bothered with the election and he should do something about it. He'd feel disloyal if he stood against her. But Emma thinks she's being disloyal to him by letting him do all the work. Does she really think he can do it? Yes. Ok, he'll register first thing in the morning. This talk of power makes them passionate and they rush back home.

Gail is surprised by the kids' reaction. They reflect that they're tougher than they think. But we see that David is out by the rabbit hutch, cuddling Barney and crying.

Alma is crying too, though she's cuddling a G&T. She's interpreted what the doctor said as bad news and is terrified at having any tests as this will confirm her worst fears. She's sure there's something wrong but if she can keep it out of her mind it won't exist. But she can't stop thinking about it and is really, really frightened.

Friday 4 May

It is just gone midnight here in the UK. Rushed home from a quiz evening (we came 6th, out of about 25), and switched on the video. Fi is going to bed!

Alma has made an excuse to Frank to say that he can't come over. Audrey thinks she ought to tell him the news. She says Alma ought to go to the hospital.

Curly comes round to talk about the meeting. He tells her that they are not doing each other justice. He says he is going to stand in his own name for election. He promises not to slag her office. Audrey says she doesn't mind.

Sarah and David discuss their dad's announcement.

Norris is trying to get information about the arrest from Emma. She refuses to say anything.

Tyrone and Maria want to watch a video, and they hint to Jack and Vera that maybe it would be better they weren't there. They don't take the hint.

Gail talks to Molly at the health centre about Martin. Gail invites her around for dinner.

Alma and Audrey go to the hospital. The consultant introduces herself, and asks Alma if she knows what the tests are all about. Alma asks her to explain.

The police come round to see Toyah. They tell her that Phil's DNA results have come back positive. However he is still denying it. The police think that he will go for psychiatric tests which will probably show that he is a pathological liar. Toyah thinks he will twist the story and say that she didn't resist.

Norris comes round to the Duckworths for their census form. They have not filled it in. Jack says it has not been filled in. When Norris goes on about it, Jack says he will fill it in.

Audrey comes in to hear the consultant's result about Alma's test. She says that Alma has got a tumour. She can't say whether it is malignant or benign. She tells her that she definitely one tumour, but there is a possibility she has others. She has arranged for Alma to have a body scan.

Janice urges Charlie to confirm to Toyah that DNA is positive proof. Toyah thinks he will deny everything. Janice says like he tried to hit Toyah's head against a wall. Toyah is still very worried. Charlie tries to comfort her.

Alma comes back from the x-ray. Audrey asks the radiologist what she can see. She says the report will go to the consultant, and refuses to say anything more. Alma is aprehensive and wants to go home.

Curly tells Emma that he surprised that Audrey didn't seem bothered about him standing.

Norris comes round again for the census form. Jack says he has filled it out the best he can. Norris says that it has to be completely filled out.

David is talking to one of Sally's daughters. He says now they are divorced they won't get back. He thinks his parents will.

Audrey is urging Alma to talk. Audrey says Frank has left another message on the answering machine. Alma says she can't talk to him, Audrey or anyone.

When Maria goes home, Jack is surprised that she wants to go home. He hints to Vera she could have stayed over with Tyrone as they are engaged.

Alma apologises to Audrey for being so rotten. She is in tears. Alma listens to Frank on the answering machine. She feels she can't answer the phone.

Sunday 6 May

Thank you Amanda for covering my updates whilst I have been partially disconnected from the rest of the world (electronically at least). I at least now have the computer in its new location and some wires connected briefly to the electricity supply and telephone networks.

So tonight events in Weatherfield are courtesy of ITV Television and are sponsored by Cadburys Caramel

Written by Mariam Vossough directed by David Kester.

Alma has been awake most of the night and has been up since 5:30. Audrey re-assures Alma that it is going to be all right. Alma has been thinking about the things which normally keep her awake - but it is merely the test results that worry her. Frank phones but Audrey lies that Alma is on an extra shift.

Tyrone has been walking Maria home every night but Jack and Vera have twigged that they are sleeping together and suggest that she can stay over - now that they are engaged. Jack and Vera could only use Vera's father's potting shed. Tyrone is embarrassed and rushes off.

At the Battersbys Leanne is on the phone and Toyah is not letting them tell about her attack. Leanne is going to spend the day on the beach. Janice reckons Toyah should start going out a little more. She agrees to join them for a drink in the Rovers.

Frank wanders into the Rovers and meets Curly - is he busy? Yes. Well he should not lumber Alma with double shifts. But Curly replies that Alma is at home with the flu. Frank apologises for his mistake.

Further along the bar Norris is taking a quick drink before going out chasing up unreturned census forms. Betty reckons he should not chase them at the weekend. Vera observes it is only a form. Norris points out that is the wrong attitude and bustles off. Vera reckons that people will do anything to get that nosy parker off your back.

Elsewhere in the bar Curly and Emma look like they are working and Jack teases them about working but Curly explains that he is planning to stand for the council and is working on his manifesto. Edna is sitting in the background and decides to offer her opinion on the rubbish round her way. Curly is also worried about litter - after all he was a binman once. Edna volunteers another long list of complaints - start with the canvassing always being during her tea time - and she is never eating a salad ...

In the Street Rosie catches David coming out of his house with a football - can they play a game? David is off to see his father but they agree to play computer game head to head later.

Tyrone and Maria are walking across the Street and Tyrone explains that Vera has invited her to tea and to stay over. Maria is happy to accept.

Edna is still complaining - about pooper scoopers and junk mail. Edna gives up - and Emma wonders how he has the patience.

The Battersbys arrive and order three pints. Duggie and Betty are genuinely pleased to see her - the place has not been the same. Toyah sees Peter and goes over to apologise and say thanks for the help he gave the other day. Peter accepts and tells her to forget about it - he has.

Alma has heard from the hospital - they want to see her immediately. They are putting on their coats when Frank arrives. He wants to know what is going on - she cancelled the weekend, she refuses his calls and there is not a word. Has she decided to change her mind? Frank is worked up and shouting. Audrey tries to get him to leave but Alma explains that she is waiting for some test results - what for he asks - not for something serious is it? Alma responds that it is.

Jack and Vera are discussing if they are doing the right thing in letting Maria stay over. They discuss Tyrone's face when discussing it - Jack observes that he probably thinks that old dinosaurs like them only discuss it and Vera observes that that is all they seem to do these days. Jack has a bad head coming on.

Duggie delivers three pints free to the Battersbys and Duggie asks if Toyah has thought about coming back to work - he will keep her job open as log as she needs to decide.

Vera congratulates Curly on his decision to stand. Both Jack and Vera sign his form.

Rosie and David are playing the computer game - and David just wins. Rosie is missing Danny - he was good at games. Rosie reckons that her mum will simply get another boyfriend - has David's mum got another boyfriend? No she hasn't. Rosie is not sure why they get another friend - although they do is row and split up. David is certain his parents are not going to get married again - Rosie is sure they will - he just has to wait. (Out of the mouth of babes!).

Frank is finding it hard to take in Lama's news. He apologises for making a scene. Audrey wants to get going. Frank offers to join them at the hospital but Alma decides that she wants to go on her own. She cannot deal with him as well as hearing the news herself.

Rosie is telling David about the reason people get married - babies. But he does not want babies - he has seen enough nasty things with Bethany! Si arrives and catches David hanging around with girls. Si accuses him of having a girlfriend but David denies it and sends Rosie packing with "she just a dumb kid - get lost isn't it past your bedtime!". She storms out and David and Si go off together.

Maria tells Tyrone that her family have accepted the news and she has protection against the paper thin walls - a ghetto blaster with 3 CDs. Tyrone asks if he sees her as a three CD man and she remarks that there is hope that one day he might! Anyway with the noise there is no chance they will be caught.

Edna comes over to the Battersbys to observe that she could not be as brave as Toyah. Janice tries to put her in her place but her comments upset Toyah and they depart - Les having just bought another three pints.

Curly and Emma now have the signatures they need. Curly is worried about how quiet Audrey has been but they are unaware of the drama at the hospital. Emma notes that one potential complaint has not been voiced - a particular constituent is concerned that she will not receive much attention from the new councillor. Curly re-assures her.

Si and David observe the goings on. They notice Norris with his shopping trolley for his census forms. David grabs the trolley and observes that he is now an old saddo - turning into an old woman with hairs growing out of his chin. Norris starts to emerge and David dashes off with the trolley. Norris immediately spots that it is missing and starts shouting at Betty. Has she seen his trolley? Surely Betty rejoins the saying is "off your trolley not lost your trolley". As she departs Norris sees the trolley (it is bright yellow) with the two boys and crosses the Street to recover it. Norris tries to recover the trolley and finds the boys have loaded it with bricks. The wheel comes off and the trolley lands on Norris's foot.

Jack and Vera greet Tyrone and Maria - Maria says they will go and listen to some music until dinner is ready. Vera observes they were blushing again. Vera hopes that Maria does not stay over too often - as it will cramp their style. She gets up and Jack gives thanks - clearly he is not terribly keen on s - e - x at the moment.

Alma and Audrey arrive at the hospital. It is not good news Alma has cancer of the cervix. Audrey launches off - is the doctor sure - the biopsy is definitive. The MR scan makes it even worse - the cancer has spread elsewhere. Audrey suggests compensation and proper treatment - she suggests going private. Alma suggests an operation, but it is too late for that - the cancer has spread too far - all they can do is make her comfortable until the end. But Alma says she feels fine. Alma then asks how long she has got - but the doctor cannot say.

I will admit I am not on form tonight - out of practice!

Great pieces from David this evening - the scriptwriters are obviously using their little star well, both with Rosie in a sensitive piece over families as well as denying her existence when challenged by a mate and then in pure comedy with Norris.

Alma's departure has been known for some time. If it means that one woman is spared IRL from the horrors by having proper tests at the right time (and nearly 20 years ago I can recall instituting arrangements for older female staff to be regularly tested at the company where I worked) then the storyline is worthwhile. I would have been happier without the link to the incompetence storyline and tonight we were informed that Alma herself missed a test - so it is not just one cause and one result.

And finally will someone put us out of Edna's misery - do women like this really exist?

Be back next week.

Monday 7 May

A special 45 minute edition tonight.

Audrey wonders if the doctor's diagnosis for Alma is right. She says they could be a mix-up. Alma says that it is not a mistake, she is very depressed and starts to cry.

Sam asks Roy if he knows anything more about Toyah. He says Janice says she is as well as can be expected.

Curly is planning his election campaign. He is hoping Emma will help him, but she is on duty.

Audrey tells Alma she must fight her illness. Alma says she doesn't believe in miracles. Audrey says she ought to get a second opinion. Maybe there is a cure in America or somewhere.

Frank comes round to see how Alma is. She tells him that she has cancer. He tries to reassure her that they can do amazing things these days. She says it has gone too far.

Norris tells Gail that David hid his shopping trolley with the census papers. He says they contain very sensitive information, and if foreign powers got hold of them it could be very dangerous.

Betty is getting upset that she is doing extra shifts. Duggie says he can't afford to hire extra staff.

Frank asks Alma if she is in pain. She says nothing but an odd twinge. Frank thinks that they should have spotted it earlier.

Vera wonders if she should call Maria and Tyrone down for tea. She doesn't want to disturb them. They then come down saying they have been listening to music.

Audrey wonders if it is a good idea for Alma to go to the cottage with Frank. She thinks it is miles from anywhere and if she needed a doctor, it may be difficult. Alma asks to be left alone, when she bursts out crying.

Maxine and Ashley bump into Matt and Charlie, they are all going out shopping being a bank holiday.

Duggie tells Peter that he has been thinking over what Betty was saying and he will advertise for a new barmaid. Edna volunteers, she says she can be "chirpy", but neither think that is a good idea. However Duggie reluctantly agrees to give a trial.

Vera hints to Tyrone that he and Maria must have slept well in the bed. Maria comes down and says she and Tyrone slept well.

Alma is reminiscing over old photos. Audrey then says that Frank is a nice man and if she wants to be with him, she should.

Jason turns up, much to Sally's surprise, at the shop. He says he was bored.

Curly is trying to explain to Emily about time and space. Basically he says he is going to find it difficult to get around all the constituency. Emily agrees to help.

Matt comes round to see Alma. He asks how she is feeling. She says frightened, angry. She blames herself for missing a smear test. Matt offers to help as much as he can. He confirms the hospital will do their best to help her, as he will.

Maria tells Tyrone that last night was brilliant. She wonders if Jack and Vera heard anything. He doesn't think so.

Sam asks Charlie about Toyah. She second-guesses him by saying that he feels guilty about what happened.

Frank comes round to Alma again. She offers to make him something to eat.

Emily tells Curly they should go for the over-60s as the target voter. Norris thinks he should miss a certain area, because they are low on the evolutionary scale.

Edna turns up at the Rovers all dressed up and smart.

When Ashley's meat van fails to start, she loses her temper and jumps out and reminds him that she is a vegetarian.

Matt tells Charlie that one of his patients has terminal cancer, due to the mix up at the hospital. He tells her that she has three months at the most, but she doesn't know that. There is a knock at the door, it is Ashley looking for jump leads for the van.

Edna tries to make conversation with Maxine, she tells her to mind her own business. Fred comes up to her and asks why she is not at the pictures, she tells him that the van broke down.

Edna complements Fred on his appearance. Peter tells Duggie that she is trying hard. Duggie can't believe it is the same one.

Frank tells Alma she is very brave. Alma says you are only brave if you have a choice. She hasn't. Frank says he's plucked up the courage to say he can't take her to the cottage and watch her die. Alma tells him she didn't know how to tell him that she wasn't coming. It wouldn't be fair.

Norris tells Edna that she has given him two pence too much change. He says as a servant of the government there can't be any scandal.

Duggie offers Edna the job permanently until Toyah gets back. She says she realises it is hard work being "chirpy". She would rather go back to her dusting and polishing job.

Maxine accuses Eve of being a gold digger towards Fred. Fred then comes over with Ashley and says he has invited Eve to dinner at Ashley and Maxine's next Friday.

Frank says he can't watch Alma becoming ill. Alma says he should remember her how she is. They have a final emotional hug as Audrey comes in. Alma hugs her and says she doesn't want to die.

Wednesday 9 May

Janice looks at the calendar and sees Friday is ringed. No-one knows who did it. No, it wasn't Les going to surprise Janice with a romantic night on the town. But Toyah looks uncomfortable.

Audrey is disappointed that Fred is so spineless. Alma wonders if she would prefer her to go to the cottage after all. No! She has lots of friends here who care about her. In fact, shouldn't she start telling them? No! shouts Alma. Her first session at the hospital is today and Audrey's taken a day off to go with her. Alma doesn't see the point. She's going to die and radiotherapy will just make her feel bad. Audrey says she's selfish. There's been appointments cancelled at the salon. If she wants peace and quiet, she can go to Shropshire. Now dress up nice in case they see a dishy doctor.

Duggie comments on how bright the Rover's bar is. Edna should play to her strengths. They're trying to cheer her up at her return to being a cleaner, but she's quite happy. And Duggie has lined up a new barmaid.

Over in the café, Maria is making Tyrone beg. Will she stop over again? She thinks they should ask Jack and Vera but he ;persuades her.

Charlie is trying to setup some speakers for the TV when Toyah arrives. He first year exams start on Friday but she knows she won't pass if she sits them now. So Phil is still wrecking her life.

The canvassing for Curly's election campaign has been passed over to General Bishop. She wants to start in the centre but that's where Audrey lives. Emily says he'll have to fight her on her home ground, that's politics. He comments on how well she's taken his defection. Oh and let's have a do for Alma, she leaves on Friday. Emily remembers Norris's party and wonders if a surprise is a good idea. (Wise words, but sadly ignored).

A blonde arrives at the bar and Peter immediately starts flirting with her. He fails to guess what she does. She does what he does, but she does it better (wink). Then Duggie appears and gives her a big bear hug. They're clearly old friends. This is Shelley, the new barmaid who used to work at the rugby club. Peter and Gina are not impressed.

Audrey and Alma are back from the hospital. She feels nauseous. Audrey says she needs to give it time before she'll feel better.

Interval

Toyah reflects that even without all this she was doing too much to pass her exams anyway. Charlie says she could have done 3 weeks cramming and passed. She's not using the rape as an excuse. She has to concentrate on what's right now. Toyah thinks Charlie is much stronger than her, but she had Mat to help her. She assures Toyah she's doing fine. Toyah uses their phone to call the college.

Alma is asleep on the sofa as Audrey reads. She wakes up after an hour but doesn't feel any better and isn't hungry. She decides to go to bed.

Out on the streets, Curly is engaging with the public. "Pride in your environment..." "Reclaiming your cultural heritage..." But he's recognised. If he really wants to do something to help, he should take a few pence off the baked beans at Freshco. 25p he charges!

Toyah tells Janice about her exams. She's agreed with the college to take a year out. Janice is upset at first and says she shouldn't let Phil win. But this is Toyah's decision. Well, whatever she wants is fine with Janice. And though she and Les don't understand about college, Toyah can still talk to them. She asks Janice to explain to Les. She's also been speaking to Roy and has agreed to return to work. In fact, she'll start now. Look at these tables, the place has gone downhill without her. Roy whispers to Janice that he'll keep an eye on her.

Curly has now made a doorbell stick. A burly man opens the door and isn't happy. It cost him £40 to fix that and you're going to pay! Emily manages to unstick it. Right, what d'y'want? They look sheepish.

Shelley is flirting with Les while Gina looks on, scowling. Duggie thinks she's just what the place needs, a bit of class (?!) The blokes can't take their eyes off her! Gina thinks this is because there's plenty of her on view (this isn't actually true and is sour grapes from Gina). Duggie wonders why Gina can't be more friendly. She bristles. You saying I'm not friendly? No, no, you're doing a fine job, keep it up and Duggie makes a hasty retreat. Meanwhile, Peter brings a crate of mixers up from the cellar.

Curly and Emily have retired to the Rovers. 3 hours and they haven't finished one street. Emily could hear some people giggling inside their houses, pretending to be out. Les offers to show Shelley the sights of Weatherfield. They used to be the 7 wonders but they've had to add 2 now she's arrived (!) Janice arrives and tells Shelley his wife will have a pint.

Max and Ash are all spruced up for a night out. She'd rather get a cab than go in the meat van but he persuades her to get in. She finds a pork pie on her seat. Sadly, it's after she's sat on it. This is the last time he'll see her in this tripe wagon. We are getting a car. He tries to say they don't need one, but can't face the ferocity of her gaze and the retort peters out.

Peter asks Duggie about the score with Shelley. They were close once but no hearts got broken. Now they're just friends. But he warns Peter, she may be a barmaid but she's no pushover. Gina translates this as Hands off. Peter didn't think he said that, but confesses to not being sure about what Duggie did say.

Curly asks Duggie to print some campaign leaflets and arrange a do for Alma on Friday. Shelley tells Duggie she likes it there. Do they have a lock-in like at the club?

Roy arrives at Audrey's. He wants her advice about a going away present for Alma. She agrees that a book on country cottage gardening would be lovely. After he's gone, she sits down and looks despairing.

Friday 11 May

Alma comes down and Audrey asks how she feels. She says a bit better, but after her next dose she will probably feel lousy again. Audrey offers to go with her to the hospital but Alma wants to go alone.

Curly tells Emily that he hasn't had much response with his campaign.

Shelley mentions to Peter, Edna, Betty that she has polished the optics. Edna is annoyed.

Toyah starts work back at the cafe. Charlie offers to take her for a drink to celebrate.

Maxine asks Audrey if she is working today. It annoys Maxine when she says she has more important things on her mind, and cannot do a full day.

Ashley and Boris look at a magazine about cars, and admire the bodywork. Blanche overhears them and gets the wrong idea.

Emily advises Curly to launch his campaign as clean up the streets, and the town hall. A big clean up campagin.

Shelley annoys Betty by serving the food and adding a bit of her own seasoning.

Alma tells Curly in the pub that she may not be going to live with Frank. Curly is surprised as he is a good man.

Sam about to walk in the cafe for food, but when he sees Toyah he goes to the pub instead.

Tyrone asks if Maria can stay over. Jack and Vera agree, although Jack thinks her parents must be missing her. She says it is ok.

Audrey goes to see Matt about Alma and her radiotherapy treatment. She is worried about the effects it is having on her. Matt says it will help prolong her life. Matt tells Audrey it is important that she supports Alma, which is more effective than any treatment he can give her. Audrey wonders if she can support her.

Curly tells Alma that he is surprised Audrey has not said anything about him running for the Mayor.

Matt tells Audrey that in the end it maybe better for professionals to take on the onerous task of looking after Alma.

Sally gives Jason his wages and says he has done a wonderful job.

Blanche tells Sally that she should alter the sign outside the shop, because it refers to Danny.

Fred and Eve comes over to Ashley and Maxine's for dinner. Fred persuades Eve to help Maxine, much to Maxine's reluctance.

Toyah catches up with Sam in the street. She tells him not to keep avoiding her. She suggests he buys her a drink.

Ashley mentions about a new car. Fred says it is important decision. Eve agrees, and says often it is more important than a girlfriend.

Vera offers Maria a cupboard in the kitchen to put her bits in as she spends so much time there. Tyrone believes Vera has hinted that she wanted Maria to move in. Maria is surprised, she said she never expected it. She will ask her parents first.

Eve gets Ashley out of the kitchen to have a private conversation with Maxine. She thinks they ought to cause a truce. She says she realises that Maxine doesn't like her, and she doesn't like Maxine. She says she is not offer Fred's money. Maxine accuses her of not looking after her own children.

Audrey finds Alma at home, after worrying because she didn't turn up at the hospital. Alma said she had a good day, drinking with friends. Audrey thinks she ought to go for the treatment, as it gives her more time. Alma says it is no use if she feels awful afterwards. Therefore she has decided not to have more treatment. Despite Audrey's pleading she says her mind is made up.

Eve and Maxine have a slanging match in the kitchen. Fred tries to calm the situtation, but they carry on arguing, and make accusations at each other. Eve and Fred leave and Maxine is left in tears.

Sunday 13 May

Sadly the new study is not finished - still no carpet on the floor. However most of the other contents are back in place and I am internet connected and the tv and video are all in place, so time to rock and roll off to Weatherfield (and a reminder of the quality - the Street received another Bafta tonight).

Events are sponsored by Cadbury's Caramel.

Written by Jo O'Keefe and directed by Ian Bevitt

Ashley tries to convince Maxine that Eve is not as black as she thinks. Max is particularly concerned by the hex on their ability to have children. Max reckons Eve is a gold-digger who will chew up Fred and throw him out.

Audrey has prepared a huge breakfast for Alma - and tries to convince her to resume treatment. Alma is not changing her mind - it is a positive decision and she will have no further treatment of any description. Alma's thoughts turn to Frank - Alma is not yet ready to tell the world.

In the Street Maria and Tyrone are discussing her moving into share with him - Tyrone reckons she can his breakfast every morning to which she answers "In your dreams". Jason is pestering Sally to let him do some sorting out and organising at the shop and she eventually agrees - although she cannot afford to pay any overtime. Curly has borrowed a newspaper boy's bag from Rita and Matt asks why - for delivering the election leaflets. Curly reminds Matt that it is Alma's farewell in the Rovers later.

Shelley, the new barmaid, is seeing to her makeup (lots of it) when Geena arrives. Shelley has already made the butties for the do later. Geena says that growing old does not bother her. Shelley has been a barmaid for ten years. Shelley thinks she has an admirer - Peter Barlow - and she asks Geena how she should play it - there is no response.

Max and Ash are leaving the house. Ash gives her the content of his wallet so she can buy a handbag to cheer her up. Then Ash tells her that Eve is coming to Alma's party. Max flies off the handle - she won't go if Eve does. Max departs.

Along at the DuckEggs breakfast is in progress with Maria and Tyrone enjoying a legendary fry up - Jack tries to nick some of Tyrone's bacon which he is not allowed. Tyrone and Maria start talking about Maria's parents being worried about her not eating properly and both Vera and Jack are surprised that both Tyrone and Maria think the latter is moving in - especially when they hear that Maria is moving her possessions the same day.

Kirk Sutherland (Maria's brother) is surprised that Jason is working on a Sunday - he reckons it must be that Sally is such a fit bird. Jason tries to tell him otherwise but it gets nowhere. It turns out the two of them are planning to repaint the exterior sign which still says D & S Hardware and DIY. Jason wants the job done properly.

Max turns up at Audrey's and asks if Alma is packed. She avoids answering and Alma asks them all to go for a walk and then they can all go for a drink. Max goes to the toilet and Audrey asks if Alma is going to let on that she is not going. Alma is unsure.

Jason has removed the "D&" and is now planning to put "Sallys" in its place. Max, Audrey and Alma arrive in the Street and Max asks Alma to come in as she has a leaving present for her. Whilst they vanish Audrey sees Matt and grabs him for a word. David and Si spot Curly with his bag and David suggest that Curly is a little old for a paperboy. Curly tells them to be careful or they might choke on the crisps. OOoooooOOOohh!! Audrey is trying to get Matt to insist on Alma on her treatment but he says it is patient choice and he cannot interfere.

They all arrive in the Rovers - a huge banner says "Goodbye Alma We'll miss you" and the crowd clap and cheer. Duggie is dispensing food. Audrey reckons it is a nightmare and Alma tells her to keep smiling. Fred orders champagne and Duggie rushes off to get it. Hayley delivers their leaving present. Curly arrives with Emma's apology. Shelley is not serving anyone and is standing around chatting. Geena asks for help but Shelley is too busy chatting.

Duggie is about to say a few words when Alma interrupts and reveals that she is not moving but staying in Weatherfield for the near future. This rather flattens the convivial atmosphere.

The Duckworths are rather surprised by the quantity of goods which arrive with Maria - plastic sacks galore. Maria's father offers some money which Jack would have accepted but which Vera turns down as she is practically family. They are sorry to see her go - but she will be fine with Vera and they are delighted to have her - although this was not quite their plan.

Geena asks Shelley to bring up some crates from the cellar - she tells Geena to ask Duggie as it might damage her nails. Matt asks Alma how she is feeling. She replies she is fine. Matt relays Audrey's concerns. Alma asks him to wait for another time. Fred and Eve are discussing Alma's news. Fred reckons that time works its healing properties. Alma tries to return Roy and Hayley's present - but Roy suggests working on Audrey's garden. Curly tells Alma he is sorry it has not worked out with Frank and perhaps she will return to Freshco? She says that early retirement seems like a good idea and she will not be coming back. Roy chips in that she will now have the time to do all those things she has thought about doing - it will be a whole new chapter in her life. So Curly reckons they have something to celebrate - a long and happy retirement.

Gail is questioning Audrey on what has happened and is getting no answers - and Gail is looking worried.

Shelley's pump has run out of beer and she asks Geena to change the barrel - Geena refuses as she is busy and Shelley says that she is better in the bar than in the cellar.

The Duckworth's looks like a bomb site - it will not fit in the bedroom so Vera offers them the front parlour - she and Jack do not use it. Tyrone and Maria are being spoilt rotten.

David and Si are kicking a ball around when Curly wanders up and offers them a job. David says he has to name his price for the 500 leaflets. 10. Not good enough. 12. Nope. 15 between them. 10 each says David. Curly has no choice but to agree. (Curly mate you have been well and truly done over).

At the other end of the road which runs at right angle to the Street (memory not working) we can see D & S Hardware behind Curly and the boys. On closer inspection Jason has painted "Sallys" rather badly in place of D & S and Sally is deeply unhappy at the damage he has done - it is obviously very amateurish (but much better than I could do, I hasten to add) and does not match the other lettering. It looks a right mess. Sally complains - Jason had no right to change it.

Back at the Rovers Ash asks Eve if she has seen the shops yet - no she hasn't. Max is surprised - she thought Eve would have valued them all. Eve says that is Fred's business, not hers. Fred is enjoying a joke with Shelley who tells Eve to let her know when she is finished with Fred.

Gail is chatting to Alma, telling the latter she is glad she is not going. Alma is also glad. Gail is worried about Audrey - she is not herself. Eve then goes up to Alma. Max decides to go and listen. Eve calls Fred special, gentle and generous. Max has another go at Eve - Eve responds that Fred is a gentleman and knows how to look after woman in an old-fashioned way. Eve was an old fashioned woman who liked being looked after and who would only take what she was given. Also she would love Fred and give in return and take care of Fred. Max does not believe her. Eve observes that if Max can show her a woman who does not like a man looking after her she will show Max a liar. This gives Max cause for thought.

Jason apologises to Sally. He has seen his mum's boyfriends come and go and he knows it gets easier. Sally admits that it was her fault and Jason comforts her, observed by Kirk who believes his suspicions concerning Jason and Sally have been confirmed.

Geena complains to Duggie about Shelley not pulling her weight. Duggie reckons she is selling more beer with the banter and reckons Geena should take a leaf out of her book. (Obvious revenge Geena - tell Shelley to get involved with Peter Barlow).

Alma and Audrey are discussing the day. Alma has had a great day. Alma departs and Gail moves to talk to her mother. Audrey is offered tea but she decides to depart. Gail is sensing that something is wrong. Audrey and Alma exchange glances observed by Gail and she is convinced that there is something wrong.

What more can I say?

I don't like the Alma storyline, I don't like each episode ending with a mention of "issues" and the website contact. I accept that all regular soaps - The Archers, EastEnders, Brookside and the Street often feel the urge to examine "issues" from time to time. It is not something the Street has done often and yet within a few weeks we have had Toyah's problem and now Alma's turned into "issues".

I was not updating whilst Toyah's problems were centre of attention. I am not female, I don't know if it was well portrayed or not. I think it was brave to do it in a 7:30pm slot and I thought that Toyah remains an outstanding young actress who carried it off remarkably well.

Alma deserves better - a fairytale departure with Frank was what was deserved and I think it is a pity that "issues" intervened.

Monday 14 May

David is being tested by his friend on the wives of King Henry VIII

Maxine and Ashley are getting excited, they are getting a new car.

Jack is cutting his toe nails in the front room. Vera is annoyed at his disgusting habits. Maria is annoyed that Tyrone used her hairbrush to brush the dog.

A woman comes into the hardware store for a bath plug. Jason hasn't got one but offers to get one from the store room.

Curly and Emily talking to a local reporter about the campaign. He wants to know why he is standing against Councellor Roberts. Curly says he doesn't want to talk about her.

Jason comes back with a plug. Sally comes in and says she is surprised because they are out of plugs. He says he brought his own, and made a good customer relationship.

Molly has taken her car to Kevin's garage. He tells her that she is not going to get far in it. He says he will get Tyrone to deal with it, but she wants Kevin to fix it.

The factory girls are looking at an article about men in a magazine. They joke about how they can't remember important dates without prompting. Then one girl says she has a book about how to "train men" [HUH}.

Audrey comes to the surgery. Gail is surprised because she has not got an important. As Audrey goes in Dr Matt picks up a leaflet about coping with cancer. Gail is suspicious and worried.

Gail asks Molly if she knows why her mum keeps going to see the Doctor. She says she can't break patient confidence.

Matt tells Audrey different patients accept bad news in different ways. He is concerned that Audrey is sleeping ok, and not working herself to a frenzy. She is upset because she is quite helpless. She confesses it is the hardest secret she has kept in her life.

Kevin is in the cafe, and the nurse is annoyed that he is not fixing her car.

Jason apologies to Sally for painting over Danny's name on the shop. She said it was just a bit of a shock.

Peter was caught by Shelley helping himself to a scotch. He tries to guess what her drink would be.

Ashley comes into the pub. He tells an excited Maxine that she will soon see their new car.

Gail goes round to Alma to ask about her mother. Gail says she keeps coming to see the doctor. Alma tells her it is serious, but it is not Audrey, but her. She says she made Audrey promise not to tell anyone, and for once she has kept to it.

Ashley shows Maxine the new car, and after her initial joy she realises it is a two seater sports car with no room for the baby, and baby changing stuff.

Alma says that she should have told Gail, Roy and Hayley but couldn't quite get used to it. Gail promises not to tell anyone. Alma says she just wants to get used to the news herself before she tells anyone else. Audrey walks in, and Gail bursts into tears and says she thought it was her mum. Audrey and Gail agree to help each other to help Alma.

Wednesday 16 May

David leaves the house in the morning and finds Curly's leaflets (that he'd left under a bench outside the chip shop) strewn all over the street.

Molly arrives at the garage but Hey her car still isn't ready. Kevin just laughs at her. He won't promise it will be ready by the end of the day and he doesn't remember that she calls it Bertha. Very bad customer service from Kevin and if I was her I'd take it away sharpish.

Curly comes out of his house and sees the leaflets. He goes to the shop to get some bin liners to clean up. Dev is there (hurrah!) Janice shows him the headline in the Gazette, Ex bin man cleans up. Gina tells Dev his mother rang. She didn't seem to know who she was. Funny they've never spoken before...

We move to the café. Bobbi has lent Karen her boy book (Venus Mantrap). Janice says she doesn't need it as she's already won her man. Now if it told you how to lose one! Bobbi tells them about her great evening. Right, Steve had better watch out. Audrey comes in and complains to Roy about the mess. He shows her the article in the paper, where they quote Curly dissing Audrey's Spanish trip.

Steve is quizzing Vik about his night. He lets him believe that he had the best night ever, know what I mean, nudge nudge. The wining and dining has paid off.

Audrey challenges Curly about his comments in the paper. She went on a legitimate fact-finding trip. However, she can't name any of the facts she found. Turns out there was a free space and she took it. Audrey has no further defence so goes to the attack. Clear this mess off my street. And if it's a fight you want, you've got one! When Curly has gone, she calls the Gazette on her mobile and suggests there's a good photo opportunity for them.

In the Rovers, Shelley persuades Duggie to enter the North-West Pub Landlord of the Year contest. It'll raise his profile.

Gina goes back to the shop but Dev has gone. She asks Sunita about his mum. Are they close? Is it only women who have arranged marriages. She's clearly worried that Dev isn't serious about her if his mum doesn't know he's seeing her.

Curly ambushes David outside the chip shop. The photographer arrives just as he gets David round the throat. Fortunately, all the leaflets have now been cleared and are in a binbag. The photographer takes a shot of the two of them (his little helper) with the bag.

Mat has gone round to talk to Alma, discussing practical issues like pain control. He says he admires the way she's handling it. He's seen others consumed with anger and bitterness sinking into depression. As he leaves, the solicitor arrives. Alma is rewriting her will. She doesn't know how much money she's got and wants to make provision. She remembers how Alf died and wants everyone to have good memories of her once she's gone. So she's going to arrange a great party for the funeral.

Max and Ash are back at the car yard. The salesman smarms over Max but is completely floored when she tells him she doesn't want the car.

Kevin meets Molly in the Rovers and tells her her car is ready. She goes straight away to start her rounds. (I'm not expecting her to make it back).

Bobbi goes to the café and sees Gina looking thoughtful. She gets the story of Dev's mam. Does Dev just see her as a bit on the side? Bobbi says she needs to talk to Dev. Her book says any worries left unresolved can only simmer and get worse. Gina reflects that they never talk about anything seriously and is clearly unsure how Dev sees the relationship.

The salesman has recovered well and is promoting the virtues of a space-cruiser. Ash isn't keen. Max suggests a different colour. There are none available, but this sober shade is just the thing for convincing teachers they'd be an ideal couple to join the PTA. Sold!

At the Rovers, Shelly is still making plans and suggests a drag night to Duggie. He's not sure. Bobbi asks Gina if she's spoken to Dev yet. Ash isn't convinced about the car. You won't get the acceleration or sense of speed in a people carrier. Max wouldn't understand, she's not a driver. Max has the perfect solution, Ash can teach her to drive.

Vik pumps Gina for info on what Bobbi thinks of him. He's a smashing bloke, nice, generous. She suggests Vik plays it cool. Karen reads from the book in a pseudo-American accent. It says men play it cool due to their insecurity. They're trying to make you take action. The answer, you play it cool. Vik meanwhile tells Steve that he's decided to play it cool, just as Steve is deciding to take Karen on a big date.

Dev arrives as Gina interrogates him. Has he rung his mam yet? What does she think of them? She doesn't think anything about them because she doesn't know. Dev hasn't told her as he didn't think it was relevant. Really? He tries to recover. He doesn't get much free time and wants to spend it uninterrupted with Gina. She's not convinced.

Steve and Vik move in on the girls. Vik suggests a night in. Karen suggests a club where the girls get in free before 10 and leaves with Bobbi. Janice tells the boys she's free.

Audrey brings Alma a cup of tea, who's been napping on the sofa. They've both had a hectic day. Listening to Audrey makes Alma feel normal. She tells her she's quite wealthy (no! says Audrey) and though some will go to Gail, Roy and the kids, she's leaving the bulk to Audrey. On one condition, she has to rename the salon to Alma's. As if Audrey would! What, forget her? No, rename the salon! Audrey wants Alma to spend the money on herself. What about a cruise? Seasickness. A safari? Alma mimics, safareh. Switzerland? Too cold. New York? Too busy. They both laugh. Alma says she's very happy just being with Audrey. Then a pain in her stomach doubles her over.

Friday 18 May

Maxine comes downstairs to tell Ashley she is not having a baby again. She wants to see a doctor.

Duggie gets a bill for watering down the whisky. Shelley tells Duggie that Peter has been helping himself to the whisky.

Curly is in the pub trying to drum up support for his campaign.

Molly complains to Kevin her car won't start. He says it won't until she pays for the work.

Vikram suggests to Bobby they go out. She manages to persuade him to take her somewhere expensive.

Ashley and Maxine go to see Dr Matt. He tells them that it takes some people years. He tells them to think of it as recreation and not appropriation. Maxine asks about tests. He tells them that it would take years. Maxine asks about private. He says it could be done next week. Maxine instantly agrees.

Molly goes round to see Alma about her radiotherapy. She tells her that the most important thing is to come to terms with what has happening. Alma talks about the summer coming and birds in the sky and things growing. She thinks death can't be happening to her. Alma later brings in coffee and apologises for "losing it". Molly tells her that the doctor will increase the pain killers if necessary. Alma says she is thinking of the hospice, as it is not fair on Audrey. Molly suggests she should stay put if she can.

Maxine tells Ashley that deep down he doesn't want a baby. He says she fell asleep once. She says that is because she was so relaxed which is supposed to help.

Audrey asks Curly and Emily why they are not campaigning. They say they have done. Emily shows Audrey the paper showing a photo of Curly picking up all the litter.

Vikram asks Dev for a loan so he can take Bobby out. Dev at first refuses but relents.

Molly tells Audrey that she saw Alma. Audrey tells her that Alma is thinking of planting roses in the garden. Audrey says Alma may never see them. But Molly says Audrey will.

Dev and Gina enjoy a good meal. He complains about Gina's flatmate, Bobby, and Vikram. He says Vikram is dining out on the contents of his wallet.

Bobby and Vikram come home, they kiss on the doorstep, much to Vikram's disappointment.

Off duty Matt talks to Ashley and says he will sort out the tests so she won't need to go private. He will make them a priority.

Gina offers to take Dev to her brother's for dinner over the weekend. Dev is suspicious and feels it is a trap.

Duggie tells Shelly that it was probably Peter that watered down the whisky. He decides to trap Peter by marking the whisky bottle. After Duggie goes upstairs, Peter helps himself to a glass of whisky.

Gina wonders if Dev is ashamed of her and wonders why she can't meet his mother. He says he is not going to be bullied and blackmailed by anyone including her. Gina storms out.

Sunday 20 May

Sadly the study still lacks a carpet - but next Friday we are promised delivery!!. Should move back into our own bedroom on Tuesday and so the house will then be back to normal. Do residents of the Street ever decorate? They must do but it never seems to cause the upheaval it does in this house!

Anyway onto events in Weatherfield, sponsored by Cadburys Wispa Bite.

Written by Mark Wadlow, directed by Anne Ross Muir

Events tonight are dominated by relationships - we open with Vik waking in his car where he has spent the night - Bobbi would not invite him in last night and Steve and Karen wanted the flat to themselves. Sadly whilst he slept the car has been covered in graffiti (he must be a very sound sleeper) principally requesting the car should be cleaned.

Duggie lets Shelley in early. She makes a plea on Peter's behalf when Duggie shows her the marked bottle - two inches less whisky than when he went to bed. Shelley asks for leniency, but Duggie knows it is theft and wants to put a stop to it.

Steve has prepared breakfast for Karen - croissants, coffee the works. Vik wanders in with a bad head and needing pain killers. Steve and Karen joke about his lack of sleep, but Vik fails to join in the jokes. Then they see the car. Kids was it? asks Steve. Vik admits he slept in the car, which gave him the bad neck. Vik says that Bobbi is weird - coming onto him all night - until he gets to the front door when it was closed in his face. Vik reckons she has got a cold heart. Vik has had enough. He goes for a bath.

Jack arrives downstairs and complains to Vera about Maria washing her underwear in the bathroom. Vera is unsympathetic. Jack wants a cup of tea but there is no milk. Vera is keen for Maria to stay but Jack is not so sure. Jack feels the house is no longer his. Jack wants them to go but Vera is reluctant.

Ash is taking Max for her first driving lesson. She refuses to go in the van - she has her image to think of. Eventually Ash agrees to teach her in the new people carrier (the sports car went back).

Karen and Steve discuss Vik and Bobbi. Vik returns from his bath and reckons he should get an arranged marriage. Karen having asked that Vik keeps her name out of it, explains that Bobbi is going by the "Venus Mantrap" book and she shows him the book. Steve is upset at treating men like a pet - as well as Vik. Vik reads extracts whilst Steve reckons it is sexist rubbish. Karen is not so sure - after all Steve did make her breakfast this morning.

At the Rovers Geena is telling Bobbi about the previous evening when she walked out on Dev. Geena knows there is something wrong - and Bobbi starts quoting the book - look at the impact on Vik. Bobbi admits that it is not all it is cracked up to - she wanted Vik last night - and she has decided to throw it up.

Shelley is asking Duggie again for leniency and Duggie promises Peter will have a chance to explain himself. She is to send him through the back when he arrives.

Geena has not heard from Dev and she is even more upset that he did not come after her last night - she is really put out. Bobbi sees Vik coming into the Rovers and goes over to the bar. She greets him warmly but he is very cold and off hand. She wants to buy him a drink but he refuses and admits he knows about the book and tells her she is dumped. She is unhappy and we go into the break.

Peter arrives in the backroom. Duggie says takings are down and someone is helping themselves to stock. So Duggie is inviting staff into the backroom and asking each member of staff if they know anything. Peter says nothing. Duggie explains that he had marked a bottle and that the level had fallen two inches overnight - and the only person who could have done that was Peter.

Ash is telling Max how to use the mirror - she is using it for checking her make up. Max is asked about the controls - she points at the console and says that is the tape machine. Ashley is being serious which Max cannot understand. Max pretends not to know the foot pedals (we have three in the UK). Max does a rapid stop and Ash says stop. Max is enjoying herself tearing around a car park.

Duggie accuses Peter of watering down the whisky - which Peter semi- denies. Peter asks for a second chance - but Duggie is not giving him one. Peter then mouths off at big shot Duggie - he is in a backstreet pub. On his way out Peter grabs one last whisky from the optic downs it and departs.

Molly the nurse wanders into the Rovers and upbraids Kevin over not fixing her car. Kevin is intending to spend the afternoon chasing debts and is clearly not going to mend the car until he is paid. She responds in kind but Kevin reminds her how many miles the car has done (more than Jimmy Saville). Molly reckons the car had many years left and then gets Kevin to buy her a tonic water because of the business she is putting his way!!! {As I observed to my wife the other evening a bottle or two of red wine and they will be in bed together}.

Duggie has come into the bar and announces that the contents of the suggestion box have been read and he will as a result be arranging a drag evening in the near future. Details soon he says in a slightly high pitched voice.

Kevin reckons that no local male will dress up as a woman. Molly observes that she had not expected Kevin to be a stick in the mud. Kevin gives her a funny look.

Geena arrives at Dev and asks why he has not phoned her. Geena asks why he did not follow her. Geena reckons she is just another conquest and he is not bothered. Dev sounds as though that is not the case and makes coffee.

Ash is shattered by Max's driving lesson and grabs a beer on return home. Max wants to put in for her test. And talking of tests when is Ashley going to have his bodily functions tested? Sooner the better reckons Max - is his sperm count up to scratch? Ashley does not like to her Max using such words and is also clearly reluctant to be tested. He refuses to agree to go. How do they do such a test? How do they get the lead from his pencil? Ashley is not sure he can do that. Ashley is not going.

Dev and Geena discuss their relationship. Geena does not think that Dev is serious - no holidays, no weekends away, no relations. Dev tries to explain that it is his life and he decides who he goes out with. Dev is worried that if his mother did know he would get incessant phone calls from his mother wanting to know if it is serious.

Meanwhile Bobbi is knocking on Vik's door. She wants to explain - the book was merely meant as a laugh. She was not being straight with him. Bobbi really likes him and every time she meets someone she likes either they go to quickly or they treat her badly and she does not like that; she admits that Vik has not gone to fast or treated her badly and in fact he does listen. She has liked him since the beginning. She wanted him to stay last night - she really did - in fact she finds it hard to keep her hands off him. He admits to being free tonight, but Bobbi decides not to wait and they start kissing and sink back onto the sofa (warning the door to the flat is still open!).

Geena asks Dev if he is married. He says no. He laughs. Geena thinks he is married to any Indian girl. At 37 he has not married, no children and no long term relationships - at least until now he has not met the right girl. And Geena knows she is not the right girl either. Dev wants to know why these ultimatums. Geena wants to know where she stands. Dev says that at the moment he does not feel he can commit to anyone. In a year or two he might feel different. Geena cannot wait that long - she knows how she feels and what she wants and if he does not feel the same then it is over - and she departs.

Geena cannot make it with Dev will Bobbi have any better luck with Vik?

And has Karen finally tamed Steve McD? He has just made her breakfast!

And will Kevin dress up as a woman and how will Molly pay her bill?

See you all next week!

K Richard Whitbread

Monday 21 May

Steve is surprised to see Vik and Bobbie back together again.

Ashley walks out of the house pursued by Maxine in her dressing gown. He says he will have his breakfast elsewhere.

Curly confirms with Emily the time of the public debate that night. He thinks it will be funny facing Audrey as a competitor. He has always been on the same side as her.

Audrey is fussing over Alma. Alma says she is ok to do things for herself, and tells Audrey she will be at the debate that night.

Gina asks Roy if he has seen Linda. He tells her that she has gone to a trade fair.

Maxine finds Ashley in the cafe. She is still trying to persuade him to go to the hospital.

Gina tells Bobbie that she is finished playing games with Dev. She is being honest with him.

Gail tells Sarah and David that their gran has the election debate tonight. Sarah says she has a lot of homework.

Ken assures Peter that work will turn up. He suggests putting in a word to Duggie on his behalf. Peter says he wouldn't go back if that is the last place on earth.

Audrey is sobbing as Fred calls her over. She says she has a bit of a cold, and he invites for a lunchtime brandy ... for medicinal purposes.

Emily asks Dev if he is coming to the debate. He says no.

Shelley discusses plans for a drag night at the Rovers with Gina and Duggie. Duggie suggests as a prize a VIP trip to the rugby club.

David is bouncing his ball in the cafe, much to Roy's annoyance.

The girls in the factory are discussing men. Hayley says Roy always does what she asks of him.

Janice makes a bet with Karen that she can't persuade Steve to take her out for an expensive meal.

Shelley offers Peter a drink on the house at the Rovers.

Ashley suggests to Maxine that they go home to try again. She says he ought to be saving it up for the tests. He says no. She says that he doesn't come over to her side of the bed until he agrees. Ashley then says he won't give her driving lessons.

Ken and Deidre come into the Rovers. Ken says he is surprised to see Peter in there. Peter says that his face doesn't fit, and is thinking of leaving.

Fred asks why Audrey is feeling down. He wonders if it is to do with Curly letting her down. She says she is just tired. Fred tells her she is the best councellor.

Sunita tells Deidre that Dev and Gina have split. Deidre thinks that may explain his bad mood. He comes into the shop arguing with Vik. Deidre asks why he didn't tell her. Dev says they are no longer an item.

Karen meets Steve in the pub. She tells him to get changed because she fancies a night on the town and a good meal.

Les says he is not interested in a drag night. Matt suggests doing it for charity, the women's centre that Charlie works for. Duggie agrees.

Karen tells Bobbie and Janice that she is going out for the meal. Janice says she will double or nothing that she can't get him to take her on a holiday.

Ashley talks to Matt about the test. Matt says he is talking as a mate and not a doctor. He says he should go and have the test.

Gina comes into the shop and chats to Sunita about Dev. She thinks he doesn't mind taking business risks but not personal risks.

The big debate starts and a reporter asks Curly about the smear tests. He repeats the question to Audrey, but is very hesitant to give a reply. She says she knows somebody who is suffering because of the mistake. She says we ought to support those that are suffering.

Ashley comes home to Maxine to tell her that he will go to the hospital. She is very pleased.

Peter comes into the Rovers for a drink. Peter says to Duggie that he didn't bar him. Duggie says he will take his money.

Karen hints to Steve about a holiday. He agrees to talk about it over dinner.

Dev comes into the bar full of smiles. Gina cuts him down.

Gail thinks it was very brave of Audrey to say those things. Alma also comes over to congratulate her. Curly says that she probably got the better of her. She has a private word with him. She tells him that she come to a decision. She is going to stand down from the election.

Wednesday 23 May

Alma is worried that Audrey will regret giving up the councillor job, but is told that she needs Audrey more than Weatherfield does. Gail breezes in and Alma tries to enlist her services. Can she dissuade Audrey from standing down? No, she knows what she's doing. Alma's attack of stomach pain just convinces Audrey she's doing the right thing.

Curly is also wondering about Audrey stepping down. He's in the café with Emma and lists all the reasons why Audrey would want to stay. It's an excuse to buy lots of hats and she loves being on parade. Emma suggests she's taking stock. If Curly wins, it will be because he's the best candidate. Karen is also having breakfast with Bobbi and Janice. She announces that Steve's taking her on holiday. Where? they wonder. Anywhere she wants. £20 please. But the others want evidence first.

David and his friend have a new game, kicking bin bags round the Health Centre. They're caught by Curly and Gail. The bags have split and there's rubbish everywhere. The lads think the binmen can pick it up, that's what they get paid for. But Gail says they will. They can do some now and then finish it after school. What about the football? No football now after this performance.

Molly arrives at the garage. She wants her car. Kevin wants his money. But she's all spent up til month end.

Maxine meets Audrey outside the salon and asks for a day off. (We know this is to go to the clinic, but she doesn't mention this). Audrey isn't going to be there either, but instead of getting into an argument, she says they can shut the place for the day.

Karen arrives in the factory with an armful of holiday brochures. She gets into an argument with Janice about how their respective men treat them and this puts Janice's back up. She ups the stakes. Double or nothing, Karen turns this holiday into a honeymoon. You're on! (What?)

Over at Dev's flat, Gina is collecting her things. Dev doesn't understand why she has to leave and is clearly hurting, but he can't find the right thing to say without appearing to commit too much. Gina leaves in tears.

The drag night is under discussion in the Kabin. Norris thinks Vik must be unsure of his sexuality if he won't join in. He is quite delicate-looking isn't he. Well Steve isn't unsure of his sexuality, so count him in. Karen takes him to one side and asks what he thinks of marriage.

Dev doesn't want to see Gina, so goes to the café instead. He'll have anything as long as it's quick. Mat meets Emma there, looking down. She says she doesn't enjoy the Armed Response Unit any more and finds it oppressive. He thinks it might be delayed shock. Yes, or something else, she mutters (pregnancy perhaps?) Then Frank comes in and sees Audrey there. Will she ask Alma to talk to him. No, Audrey is disgusted with him. He let Alma down when she needed him most. Just go away Frank.

Duggie tells us that now people know it's for charity, there's a lot of interest in the drag night. Sam suggests a garage team but boring Kevin wants nothing of it. Ash tells Max he's worried about going to the clinic for his test, he doesn't like the smell of the place and is embarrassed at what he'll have to do. Max assures him it will all be worthwhile and won't take long.

Curly takes Frank into the pub and reassures him about Alma's illness. (Remember, he thinks she had flu). Frank explains he couldn't have coped. It's only got a small hospital, there's no cancer centre... Oops! He thought she'd have told him. Curly here's the story. There's nothing they can do, Alma's going to die.

Interval

Duggie and Norris discuss their frocks. Duggie will be a vision in pink gingham and Norris is going as a diva, though he won't say who (I'm betting Shirley Bassey). Gina arrives, looking dreadful and Duggie is sympathetic.

Curly gives it to Frank straight: You ran out on her and left her to face it alone. But Frank points out he didn't know Alma that long and Curly comes round to his point of view. He agrees to take Frank's letter as he'll be going round to see her later.

Ash returns from the clinic but has failed to fill his pot. Max tells him that happens to many men. But suppose he was in his own house, with his own wife, then they can drive the sample quickly round to the clinic. Ash beams and they rush upstairs.

The lads have bagged all the rubbish and David is setting fire to it in the back garden. His mate Simon dumps another bag and puts the fire out. You muppet! They get called to dinner and fail to notice that the fire has spluttered back to life.

In the Rovers, Karen asks Steve if he loves her. Kevin is still saying he won't go to the drag night. Les has come round and is thinking of going as Cher, he's got the body for it (!) Back with Steve, he's now heard the story of the bet (and we don't hear his reply to the earlier question). Is he mad at her? No, they can make some money out of this. He agrees to do it if they split the winnings. He'll propose to her tomorrow, in here, at lunchtime. She kisses him. Janice watches worried from across the room.

David goes to feed Barney and finds the garden on fire. Sam and Mat (don't know why) rush in over the fence with a fire extinguisher and a spade and start to put it out. Gail is frantic. Is David stupid, he could have burnt the house down! He rushes to the hutch but Barney is OK. (Hooray!)

Molly goes to see Kevin. She's been to the bank and pay part of the bill now. But she needs her car for work. What can he do? They agree she can make a downpayment now and pay the rest later.

Tyrone rushes into the pub to escape from Sam. He doesn't want to join in the drag night. But Kevin is crumbling. Molly eggs him on. He'd look great, she could lend him some clothes. He will if Tyrone will. They agree.

Curly arrives at Alma's. Why didn't she tell him? He wishes there was something he could do. Then softer, Are you in pain? No, she's got tablets and Audrey's been wonderful. Who told him? Frank, and Curly gives her the letter. She'll read it later (we don't get to see what's in it). Now he knows why Audrey stood down. But she says Curly will make a wonderful councillor and she'll tell everyone to vote for him. She has more important things on her mind now.

Sam and Mat finish the Platt's dishes and go to the pub. Gail challenges David again. If he wanted to have a fire he should have waited for his dad. But he doesn't live here anymore. You could have been burned to death. It's all too much for David and Gail finally realises how much pain he's been in. I want me Dad, I want me Dad!

Friday 25 May

Emma wishes Curly good luck in the polls. He says it is not much competition with Audrey having pulled out. He is worried about another candidate though. (I didn't realise there was anyone else standing!).

Karen tells Steve that she wants the "works". They are agreed they will still go 50/50 on the deal.

Emily asks Curly if he is confident. He says he is a bit nervous.

Gail is still going on at David for setting fire to the garden.

Deidre tells Dev that he is acting funny. He says it is up to him how he acts. She queries again, and he storms out of the shop.

Sam asks Tyrone if he is voting. He says he is not bothered. The only voting he is interested in is the drag competition in the Rovers.

Curly is campaigning through a megaphone. "vote Watts - he knows what's what!!". Audrey catches up with him and tells him the town hall have told her it is too late to withdraw. She then goes to the megaphone to tell people voting for her is a wasted vote.

Gail and Martin talking. She thinks maybe David needs a man around the place.

Audrey asks Norris if he has voted. He says he will vote for the most worthy candidate and is then surprised when she suggests he votes for Curly.

Karen and the other girls are in the pub waiting for Steve. There is no sign of him. Janice thinks she has been stood up. He comes in with a bunch of flowers and then he gets down on one knee and proposes.

Vikram tells Steve that he can't believe he proposed to Karen. The girls ask Karen how she persuaded him to do it. She says he would do anything for her. She then wants her winnings. Janice says she will give it to her when she gets paid.

Tyrone asks Sam who he should vote for. He says he would vote for the same as Sam, but Sam says she should make up his own mind. At the voting station, the "slimeball" Desmond is annoyed that Audrey has supported Curly. Desmond says the people have a right to know what is going on.

Dev comes back to the shop and apologises to Deidre. She says when she had troubles he was there for her, and now she wants to repay the favour. He says Gina wants more from him than he can give her at the present time. She asks him how he feels about her. He says that he can't get her out of his head. He says at the present time he still has ambitions and he is not ready for marriage.

Hayley gives everybody their pay packets. When Karen asks for her money again. Janice says only if the holiday becomes a honeymoon. Karen says if she gets Steve to marry her by next week would that do?

Sam and Tyrone catch Norris reading a woman's magazine for makeup tips for the drag competition. Tyrone says he will beat him anyway.

Martin goes round to take David around for the half term. Sarah is annoyed because he burnt her jeans and then gets a holiday.

Audrey and Curly hope that the election will go their way.

Desmond brings over the returning officer (council official) for the election. He tells them there is nothing in law that prevents Audrey campaigning for another candidate.

Ashley is worried about his test. Matt reassures him everything will be ok.

The results of the election are announced. There are 5 candidates standing (none from the regular Labour, Liberal or Conservative parties!). Norman wins by just under 300 votes.

Karen tells Steve that she has gone double or quits on the bet. He has to marry her by next week. He says lets go for it!

Sunday 27 May

Good evening. My last update before a brief holiday - all being well Amanda will be in this seat next week. We are still in need of a Monday updater although Martin Rosen is now covering Fridays. Any volunteers?

And the carpet has arrived - although it caused major trauma on Friday and someone somewhere will be receiving a letter of complaint early next week.

And so to Weatherfield where events come courtesy of Cadbury's Flake for their continued sponsorship.

Written by Mark Wadlow, Directed by Tim Dowd

Norris is looking at Rita's jewellery in readiness for his stage appearance. Norris is refusing to say who he will be impersonating. It is only costume jewellery. Anthony arrives wetly and is brought up to date on the Rovers drag competition. Anthony refuses to take part even though it is in aid of charity.

Toyah is cleaning the cafe when Les and Janice arrive - it is her birthday and she thanks them for a watch. Toyah says she plans to stay in and get a video. Les reckons he will win first prize. Les wonders if Hayley will be taking part in the drag contest but realises it would be unfair on the rest of the competitors.

Des and Sam are testing a bike to get the timing right and then proceed to read the words of "Leader of the Pack" without any feeling or timing at all. Sam is unimpressed. Sam asks for an hour's practice. Kev and the others agree.

Norris is trying on some earrings and Anthony gets a clue towards the identity of the singer. Internationally known singing star. The guess is Cleo Lane and it is a contemporary of hers but better in Norris's view. This special lady once saved Norris' life by being louder than his ex-wife. Norris departs to get ready. Anthony and Rita are definitely going.

Gail talks to Sarah about David and Martin going on holiday together - it turns out Sarah is not too bothered. David has a huge suitcase even though they are only going for a week (me too, me too!). David has packed on his own - but when Gail inspects - all she finds are one football shirt, one football and one computer game - no clean clothes, no toothbrush? David responds that he likes to travel light!!

At the Corner Shop Deirdre decides to talk to Dev about commitment. Dev admits that Geena means a lot to her. Dreary threatens to talk to Geena but Dev tells her not to do so. Dreary reckons that Dev and Geena get on well and perhaps they are silly to give up so easily. Steve arrives in the shop and Deirdre congratulates him on his engagement. So when is the Big Day? Dreary reckons the joke has gone far enough but Steve is serious - they are only getting married - it is no big deal. He then asks Dreary if they sell make up!!

Gail is packing a smaller bag for David who is looking out of the window. Martin is late. Sarah asks after Barney and he asks her to look after the rabbit. Sarah then gives David a camera. We hear a horn - Martin has arrived. David is told to ring. Sarah reckons peace at last.

Dreary arrives in the Rovers and finds Geena on her side of the bar. Dreary tells Geena she knows. Dreary reckons they make a lovely couple and if they are both as unhappy as they look then they should sort it out sooner rather than later. Geena reckons it is too late but starts pondering on Dreary's words.

Vik and Steve are getting changed in the back room of the Rovers and Duggie finds that the fancy dress hire shop have not delivered his false boobs - a bit difficult when he will be Dolly Parton. Karen agrees to go to the shop but before she leaves Steve asks if she will be free for a time on Monday morning - they have to go and get a special licence for their wedding on Wednesday at 12:00. She looks a bit bemused for a second and Steve asks if she is having second thoughts - no - but it is really happening, she can hardly believe it!

After the break the boys are all starting to get ready in the backroom. Out front Dev walks up to Geena - he is smartly dressed and she tells him about the conversation with Dreary. Dev admits he is unhappy. Dev asks if Geena will be civil - will she have a drink with him? Geena agrees to be less aggressive.

Curly wakes up - he has been asleep all day. Curly admits that it feels like a hollow win. Emma has finally realised that she should not have been canvassing for him - it is against the rules. And Radio Weatherfield are going to interview him.

Karen is telling Bobbi and Janice about the wedding plans. Janice reckons that she should not do it for a bet. Toyah comes into the pub and they are all pleased to see her.

Duggie arrives as Dolly and immediately loses a balloon boob. The first act is the Shangrilas from the garage. Sam does a wonderful falsetto on "Leader of the Pack".

Audrey has arrived at Curly's. She tells him about her experiences on becoming elected. Curly reckons it is tedious and trivial - particularly compared with her reasons for standing down. Audrey gives Curly a purpose - that no-one else should suffer like Alma. Curly can apply pressure to ensure a proper enquiry and resolution. He starts coming alive with the potential challenge.

Les is doing a guitar act - I don't recognise it - turns out it was Suzi Quattro. Duggie loses his other boob. Steve and Vik are the girls from Abba - not great.

Curly is being interviewed - he has decided to take on the scandal - he wants a public enquiry. The victims should be fully compensated. He asks for the victims to contact him direct.

Audrey returns home to Alma who is failing rapidly. Alma is now obviously ill and on morphine. The pain has been bad today. Alma did not want to bother Audrey. And she drops off to sleep on the sofa.

At the Rovers Norris appears as Eartha Kitt and does "An Old Fashioned Girl" with a wonderful growl - definitely the turn of the evening. He is not happy with his performance. Betty and Shelley were the judges - and Norris is the winner - so has to repeat his performance. Shelley kisses him and he is a happy bunny.

Dev has invited Geena back for a nightcap. She feels weird that they have gone out when they are not going out. He has missed her and he tries to kiss her - she just wants to talk. They bicker again and she departs.

Over and out - no time for a commentary tonight. Back soon.

Monday 28 May

Come back from an exhausting day at a car boot sale (it is spring back holiday) for an extended 45 minute episode. However, I rang for a delivered pizza, and of course mistimed it so that it arrived just as the programme was about to start. Now it is in the oven!

Curly tells Emma he is going to hold a mini-surgery to discover what people want from him as a local councillor.

Vik and Bobbie don't think that Steve and Karen will go through with the wedding. She hasn't got a wedding dress yet, and it is the day before the wedding.

Maxine is concerned she has not heard from the hospital regarding the tests. Ashley says that Matt has promised to tell them as soon as he knows.

Gina tells Shelley she is finished with men. Shelley says men are like fags, only more addictive. She shows Gina photos from the drag night.

Janice winds up Norris in the shop by telling him she dosen't recognise him with his dress off from the drag night.

Curly goes round to get support for his mini-surgery.

Dev argues with Sunita. She says he never used to be so tempremental.

Jason is working in Sally's shop and his friend comes in and is surprised he is working on a bank holiday. He explains that people do d-i-y on a bank holiday.

Shelley puts the photos of the drag night on the wall of the pub. She tells Les that he has nice legs and he shouldn't keep them covered. He says he does so to stop the women chasing him.

The girls in the factory tell Karen that she shouldn't get married for a bit. It is not right.

Sunita tells Gina that Dev is very miserable. On a scale of 1-10 he is at 10.

Blanche tells Curly about dog muck on the pavements. Norris about stray cats. Then Blanche about pigeons.

Dev is on the phone to an ex. and arranges a date, and Gina walks in. She turns around and goes out again.

Dev rushes out to catch her, but bumps into Emma who starts talking to him.

Jason's friend comes round to the shop and asks if he is breaking for lunch. He thinks that maybe Sally has other ideas in the back. Jason tries to stop him, and Sally calls out that she has lunch ready.

Vik suggests to Steve that he is having a laugh. He wonders how long he will go on with it. Steve says he will go all the way. Vik tells him that he shouldn't go ahead with it.

Sunita and Dev argue in the shop about Gina. She says she tried to help but he blew it. He tells her to keep out of his love life.

Steve asks Karen if she has bought a dress. He doesn't want to be suited and booted if she hasn't got one. She shows him the receipt, and he exclaims at the price.

Curly tells Emma that the meeting was positive. He got a lot of good feedback. He is going to have to balance his life between being a manager at Freshco and a Councillor.

Peter asks Steve what is happening in the pub. The girls are all shouting and screeming. Steve says he is getting married, for a bet.

Gina is knocking back the drinks, and Janice suggests she should pace herself.

Karen calls over to Steve to enjoy himself at the stag do, and to behave himself.

Karen and Gina are having a good time in a disco dancing with men. The others look on. The others are persuaded to join in except Maxine and Hayley who sit it out. Then Maxine and Hayley dance together!

Dev comes into the Rovers and asks Shelley if everyone is at the stag/hen night. She tells him that Shelley is avoiding him.

Blanche comes in and asks Dev to open the shop for some milk. He says he won't.

At the stag night, Ryan (Linda's brother) tells Steve he shouldn't get married. Steve said he should be congratulating him. The men then have a drinking contest.

Janice tells Karen there is probably a lot about Steve that she doesn't know, for example he has been "inside". She says she knew.

Dev comes into the hen night, and pushes the guy dancing with Gina away. He says they should talk. She says she thought he had a date for tonight. Dev asks her to come back to his place so he can explain. She goes with him, to the surprise of Janice.

The guys are discussing their wives. A policewoman comes over to ask them to keep the noise down. They say they can make a noise if they want as it is a pub. She then proceeds to strip!! Curly leaves.

At home Emma has bought a Predictor kit.

At Dev's he says he does not want her to go. He says he just wants to make things right between them. He says he cares about her. She says her boss cares about her, and her friends care about her. He says he doesn't know what she wants. He says if it is his mother she wants then she can ring her, but says she'll be on the phone this time next week.

Karen says if she doesn't marry Steve she'll loose two days wages and she is not going to do that. She doesn't reckon that Steve will turn up, so she is not turning the bet down.

Curly comes back after the stripper has left. He says as a council official he can't be seen at a strip show.

Steve tells Vik that he doesn't think Karen will go to the registry office.

Karen tells Dev that he doesn't own her. She is a single woman with no ties and no committment. He explains he has been through some disastrous relationships and doesn't want it to happen to her. She then kisses him and starts fondling him. They start to snog on the couch.

Emma looks at the result of her test and realises she is pregnant.

Wednesday 30 May

Gina comes out of Dev's bedroom with a big smile. She mets him in the kitchen and gets oferres a lovely breakfast. Dev seems to have been able to make his feelings clear. Gina takes up one of his breakfast offers and they go back to bed.

Steve has a headache after his stag night vik's solution is a big fry-up, he'll need to be in top form for the weeding. Steve reminds him it's a joke, Karen will bottle it, it's just a power game. Vik then wonders why Steve would upset her by standing her up at the altar. Steve can't take any more and also goes back to bed.

Meanwhile, int e café, Bobbi is going through the same mantra with Karen. She gives us a half-baked explanation. She's sick of doing the same thing day after day. Get up, go to work, get runk. She wants to have just one day where anything can happen. Death at the feast Ryan appears and mutters on again about Liam. Then Linda comes in and adds her two penn'orth. Karen will see them both at the registry office.

The Watts house is full of post. Curly seeks reassurance again from Emma that he's done the right thing. She's feeling tired and decides to pull a sickie. Curly doesn't have time to skive and leaves for work.

Linda goes round to Steve's. She's doing this from an independent financial viewpoint. There's a big order coming up and if the girls are skint from losing the bet, they'll be more likely to want overtime. She tells Steve that Karen will definitely be there. If Steve doesn't turn up she'll get over it, but she won't forgive him. Steve calls Vik in a panic.

Ken comes out of the paper shop and sees a bird leaving Peter's house. (Where is he living now?) Candice meets Todd and gets bowled over by Jason as he comes tearing out of the house. They exchange insults.

Curly has gone to the shop and meets Mat. He's had a letter from the Health Authority assuring him there won't be a cover-up. Ash also arrives and Mat tells him the test results are in. He should make an appointment.

Gina is at the registry office and tells Linda about her wonderful night with Dev. They go to the waiting room and we see everyone else is there but the happy couple. Just as they're speculating on whether they'll turn up, Steve arrives with Vik.

In the café, Betty and Vera discuss the bet/divorce/kids today etc etc. Kevin chats to Peter about the woman he saw. He thinks she's a police officer and doesn't think that's the best person for Peter to go out with. Peter assures him it was just a one-night stand and she was actually the stripper from Steve's stag night. Ken is the only person who didn't know about the wedding.

Back at the registry office, everyone is waiting. Steve paces about, then thinks Karen put Linda up to getting him there. Just them, she arrives with Maxine. Her hair took a bit longer and then they couldn't get a taxi. Steve asks: Are we really doing it? Well yeah, saying as we're all here.

Interval

They all file int. Karen is waing an orange striped floaty dress with spaghetti straps, with a silk flower bouquet. There's a flower in her hair and she has a wide gold choker. The registrar begins. Marriage should not be entered into lightly. (Oh dear!) Any impediments? Janice mutters about the cost.

Jason pops into the café for some sandwiches. His mate is sitting there with Todd and Candice. They hear him joshing Jason about Sally. Does she wear French knickers? Older birds are more sophisticated. That clinches it, it must be true.

Oh no, Steve's forgotten a ring. After some confusion, Eileen volunteers. The service continues.continues.

Emma is in the café but isn't really hungry. Vera comments on how peaky she looks. Curly arrives and agrees she doesn't look well. But Emma barges out and says she's going into town.

The wedding party repair to the Rovers. Max and Ash are also there and he tells her the test results are ready. He hasn't made an appointment yet and she rushes off to do so. Janice doesn't have her bet money but takes her hat off to Karen. Vik asks to stay at Bobbi's tonight so the newly-weds can have some privacy. Karen implies to Eileen that she'll now be running Streetcars. Eileen asks for her ring back.

Gina goes to the shop to tell Dev about the wedding. She thinks it was romantic. He sees it as rash and tacky. Sunita puts some cream cakes and nibbles together for the guests.

Linda gives Karen a present, something from Underworld's executive range. It's a scarlet basque (doesn't she already have one of these?) Steve gets the champagne in as Ryan has another whinge at Karen. Dev brings the cakes in and when Gina sorts them out, she finds a card in there. It's a plane ticket to Barbados. Three weeks, all cleared with Duggie. He may not do romantic much, but when he does, he does it in style.

Max and Ash are seeing Dr. Mat. The tests showed Ash had a low sperm count with low motility. That explains why Max hasn't got pregnant yet. But there are things they can do to improve his chances. Meanwhile, they should continue doing what they're doing. They may get pregnant before the next tests. Max wants treatment now and storms out. Ash feels it's his fault.

Emma nearly gets trampled by Max as she comes out of the Health Centre. This seems to make her change her mind. Todd, Candice and the mate are hanging outside the hardware store and harangue Jason when he comes out. He calls them pathetic brats. Steve and Karen head for the flat. Karen can't believe it. Steve tells her he meant what he said. He loves her. She loves him too. (ah!) He picks her up and carries her into the flat.
