Monday 1 January

Danny is waiting for an answer to his question.

Duggie proposes a toast to the newly-departed landlady, Natalie.

It is party time in the Rovers.

Sally says she won't give him an answer in the Rovers, but at home. He wonders what there is to talk about.

Ken is depressed. He was looking forward to the new year. Deidre says there is no reason he can't have a new start for the new year.

Glen and Sarah are snogging on the couch. She is very aprehensive, and then (almost as a sigh of relief), Gail comes in.

Amanda is having to feed her mother, while the rest look on. They make small talk about the excellent cooking. Amanada says her mother used to make superb meals.

Sally says it was a bit of check, and she wasn't expecting it. She needs time to think about it. Danny says if the answer is 'no', put him out of his misery. She says that he is the best thing that has happened to her for ages. She needs to think about it.

Anthony argues with Amanada about bringing his wife home. Rita comes in and says she understands why she brought her mother back.

Fred asks for a moment in the pub, just before midnight, to spare a thought for those that can't be with us. [On the radio we hear the chimes (however it is bonging too quick for Big Ben!!].

At Anthony's everybody wishes everybody a happy new year.

Sally is vacuming the flat. She says that Danny couldn't sleep last night, and her neither. However she still hasn't come to a decision.

The next morning, Liz feeling a bit worse for wear, and then Fred wanders in half dressed. She tells him that he can't stay there. Although he says he has one third share, she yells that the living quarters are private.

Anthony comes round to Rita to apologise for Amanada. He says she is behaving like a spoilt child. Rita says he needn't worry, she won't scare off easily.

Gail suggests Sarah invites Glen round for tea next week. Sarah doesn't want to.

Deidre asks Liz what it is like being top dog in the Rovers. She says it will be better when she is rid of the three stooges.

Martin asks Danny if she said yes, and he tells him she said she needs time to think. Martin agrees with all she has been through, it is quite natural.

Sally tells Gail, who says Danny asked her first whether he should ask. Sally feels flattered that he should ask someone for advice.

Emily tells Rita that she sympathises with Amanda. Rita says she won't desert Anthony.

Mike wants to speed up service in the Rovers. Duggies says people like a chat, and don't want to be served by a robot.

Tyrone and Maria discuss how nice it would be if they have a place of their own. She suggests that she can stay over with Tyrone for the night. Tyrone starts shouting at her for deceiving everyone. He is obviously scared.

Ken thinks he has been shortchanged. Gina says he'll have to wait till closing time, but to Gina's annoyance, Mike gives Ken the money.

Emily and Norris talk about how well both of them handled the situtation last night.

Fred bumps into Toyah and she breaks a glass, and threatens to take it out of her wages. This starts a row with Gina and Liz against the proprietors.

Danny wonders if they have reached the end of the line with Sally. If she doesn't want to marry him then perhaps he ought to look for someone else.

Wednesday 3 January

Ken receives a letter about his application to be a magistrate. He has got through to the next stage. It doesn't make up for the problem with Peter. He had hoped to build a decent relationship between father and son.

Liz tells Toyah that Duggie, Mike and Fred may own the place but she is running the place. A padlock has been put on the fridge, as it now belongs to the pub. They will get a new domestic one.

Rita is helping Anthony pack up from his place. She thinks it is an adventure in finding old relics and memories from the past.

Glen tells Sarah that his parents will be away over the weekend, and asks if she would like to come over. Sarah says she will ask her mum if she will babysit.

Sally invites Kevin for a walk!

Wayne's step-father comes round to Roy and Hayley to apologies for his behaviour previously. He says his mum is finding difficult to look after him. There is no money coming in. He refers to a pair of trainers that Wayne wanted, they cost £60 and they couldn't afford it. Roy immediately gives him the money.

Sally tells Kevin that Danny has asked her to marry him. She is scared. She is worried the same thing that happened with her and Kevin could happen again.

Peter comes round to see Ken. He apologises to Ken. He says he was driving without a license, insurance, gave a false name. Ken optomistically suggests they wouldn't send him to prison.

Liz recalls to Deidre it is 27 years since her first marriage to Jim. She says she is not strong, all behind the bar is an act, she misses him.

Kevin asks Sally if she loves Danny. She says it is not a matter of loving him, but whether it is the right thing to do. She says she wants to talk about it, because he is still Rosie and Sophie's father. Kevin thinks because she has doubts she may already have the answer. However Danny is nice bloke, and he is sure he would look after her. She confirms she loves him.

Danny is drinking with Martin, he is still waiting for an answer.

Mike offers Norris a drink, but he needs to keep a clear head for the "queen's business" (Post Office).

Peter thinks if Ken were to go to the police station showing them his driving license and insurance the whole thing would be over in 5 minutes.

Anthony gives Emily some items for the charity shop. He tells her that he would not have been able to endure the move without Rita. He loves her.

Roy realises that the £60 he gave over may not go to Wayne.

Ken tells Deidre that Peter is at his wits end. Deidre still supports Ken, and confirms breaking the law won't help. Ken says he is going for a walk to think.

Danny tells Martin that if Sally has kept him waiting this long, the answer must be 'no'. Martin says she is mad for him.

Sarah asks Candice if she thinks Glen is nice. She expresses her doubts to Candice. Candice thinks he is nice, but she should go to the chemist first. Sarah is worried that Glen thinks she is easy.

Danny tells Martin that he loves Sally. He loves everything about her.

Fred walks behind the bar to help himself to a drink. Liz tells him to stay behind the other side of the bar.

When Danny comes home drunk, she tells him to go away, she wouldn't marry a man who comes home drunk.

One of the books Anthony gives to Emily is a medical dictionary. Norris wants it, so Emily says take it as a gift from Anthony.

Ken goes to Peter and tells him that he will lie to police for him.

Friday 5 January

The recriminations between Sally and Danny continue, because he came home drunk. He believes it is because she has not given him an answer has driven him to drink.

Deidre is annoyed that Ken has changed his mind about supporting Peter. Deidre asks what he would do if a similar case came up when he is a magistrate. He says he has no idea.

Kevin, Tyrone and Dennis are reading 'readers letters' from a paper. One letter hits home to Tyrone from a girl who says his boyfriend won't sleep with her.

Wayne turns up at Roy's cafe. He says he has run away from the home.

Ken turns up at the police station with the documentation.

Hayley arrives back at the cafe, and Wayne asks if he can stop there. She says he can, but she is going to talk to the childrens home.

Danny asks Sally again if she really meant 'no'. He says he was stupid; she agrees.

Hayley tells Wayne to discuss with others the way he feels. Wayne rushes out.

Dennis and Kevin tease Tyrone about the letter. He wants the paper, and goes off to lunch.

Hayley and Roy discuss why Wayne should rush off. Then the woman from the home arrives, but they explain she has just missed him.

Danny and Sally have more chats about their future. Sally invites him to try again. He then proposes to her again, she says yes.

Maria denies to Tyrone that she wrote the letter. He says there is too much of a coincidence not to be her. She denies it, but agrees with the letter. She threatens to call off the engagement.

Ken tells Deidre that he thought about what she said about being a magistrate. He tells her that he has withdrawn his application.

Danny tells Kevin that Sally has agreed.

Fred looks at the hotpots that Gina is serving. He demands they produce smaller portions.

The woman from the home thinks it is a tribute to Roy and Hayley that they were his first port of call.

When Dennis and Kevin see the smaller portions of hotpot, they threaten to go to the Flying Horse, Fred recinds his instructions.

Danny tells Kevin. He tells Danny when he was talking to Sally, he advised her to do what she wants. Danny is not too happy that she had discussed it with him.

Deidre tries to apologies to Deidre about involving Ken. Deidre isn't interested, and tells him that Ken has withdrawn his magistrate's application.

Sally explains to the Girls that Danny has asked her to marry him. Danny says he was surprised Kevin knew all about it. He is annoyed that every decision she needs to consult Kevin. He insists that it should never happen again.

Peter wonders why Ken has withdrawn his magistrate's application. He thinks Ken is trying to punish him. They get into a row. Peter tells Ken that Susan has kept a secret from Ken for years, and refuses to tell him.

Sunday 7 January

Good evening. No holds up this week and boy was I glad the tape machine was running. My mother phoned up during the programme and a daughter returned home and made so much noise and interruptions that I would have been using CSVU tomorrow to find out what happened without the tape. By the way Vivienne is back with updates - I hope you are all being entertained!!

This evening we thank ITV Television and Cadbury's Creme Eggs who are the current sponsors.

Written by Peter Mills, directed by Philip Wood.

Ken is throwing breakfast down his front when Dreary asks him what the problem is that kept her awake most of the night. Ken is concerned about Susan's secret as not yet revealed by Peter. Ken thinks it may be an illness. Peter refuses to increase the details. Dreary reckons he may be worrying without need - seeing that it is Peter.

Hayley comes downstairs into Roys' Rolls. She has spoken to the children's home but there is no sign or news of Wayne. The staff member on duty knows nothing and reckons Wayne will turn up when he wants so to do. They both put their coats on and when Toyah comes in they depart leaving her in charge - they are going to find him. And if Wayne is not 100% Roy is taking it up with the authorities - whoever might be responsible.

At one of the tables Candice puts down her drink in front of Sarah and makes it clear that she is unhappy (just with body language - great teenager performance) with Sarah for not telling her the latest of events with Glen. After all they did it on New Year's Eve didn't they - so they share everything - so how good was he in bed? Sarah is distraught - yes she tells Candice everything and there is nothing to tell. But Glen has been telling his friends they did. Candice believes the truth. Sarah storms out.

At the Rovers, Duggie has arrived with his sporting trophies to provide some atmosphere for the pub. Liz and Geena are not impressed. Geena suggests that getting the cellar cleaned would be an improvement and shows him just how filthy her top is carrying up crates from below. This gives Duggie an idea and he departs.

Tyrone opens the door to find Maria standing there. She gives him a video back and he gives her a Travis CD back. See ya they both say although both are clearly unhappy that it is all off. (Go on Tyrone give the girl her rations).

Outside the Kabin Rita is checking the window when Anthony arrives. He has spent the first night under his daughter's roof. Anthony explained that there was a bit of role reversal in progress - she kept fussing round him. Rita said she would start worrying when Amanda got the nappies out. As they chat Sally, Danny and the gurls wander up. Sally announces that they are going shopping for an engagement ring - for *her*. Sally promises to show her the ring later after Rita congratulates them. As they depart Rita remarks that young love is so special. Anthony observes that old love has something going for it as well.

Peter arrives at the Barlows and Kent tries to extract from him just what is this huge secret. Peter is refusing to give any more details and in fact realises he has already said far too much and that Susan will probably be unhappy with what he has said. He tries to re-assure Ken that it is not serious - there is nothing wrong with Susan that she wants Ken to know about.

Over at the Platts, Candice is running down Glen and David arrives when he hears the insults. "Did you call?". Candice then starts on him calling him "stumpy" and "poison dwarf". Sarah restrains Candice and then tells Candice that she will miss the next date with Glen - she is not easy and does not want that reputation.

Roy and Hayley return to cafe but there is no news. Toyah departs to do some work on a project - she is sure Wayne will turn up safely, Roy wishes he could be so sure. When Hayley returns from checking the position, Roy decides to close the cafe because he feels they should accept some responsibility - unless they find Wayne they probably will not be allowed to be foster parents anyway.

On the other side of the Cafe Tyrone is taking a few quiet minutes thinking about Maria. Dennis comes in and asks why they are waiting so long for the sandwiches? Tyrone explains that he and Maria have split up - the situation is the same as the letter in the paper but Maria did not write the letter, although she agreed with it. Dennis cannot understand it - most young people would be at it like rabbits! Tyrone wanted to wait until after the wedding to prove that he was not using her - like men used his mother. Now Tyrone thinks he has mucked everything up. But perhaps says Dennis that the principles could be sacrificed for the greater good? Too late says Tyrone - Maria will have found someone else?

Gail brings Glen into the house and decides to take David out of it. The latter refuses to go instantly - he is reading Harry Potter. Glen wants to know why Sarah did not turn up - because she is angry. Sarah tears a strip off him - for not correcting the impression his friends had gained of how easy she is. He has no defence. Pity Sarah had no consideration for her reputation a little sooner. Glen is well and truly dumped and marched out of the house.

Toyah arrives at the Rovers late and tries to apologise to Mike and Duggie saying that Roy and Hayley were stuck. Now sadly this implies something went astray as she left the cafe to do some work - so continuity was adrift. Mike tells her off - she should start work at the appointed time when he is paying her. Toyah does not look happy.

Rita is having a drink with Anthony. Anthony is explaining that he is settling in at his daughter's but she had not prepared a packed lunch. He cannot come round for dinner tonight as Amanda is expecting him to be at home for 7 for dinner. Rita can hardly believe her ears!

Dreary and Ken are sharing a drink. Ken is going to contact Susan - although he only has a mobile number for her - and that speaks volumes in itself.

Roy and Hayley are walking along the Street discussing the situation. Roy cannot understand how, if a boy is missing, there are not police cruising the streets looking for him. (Sadly as we probably all know the care authorities reportedly do little to pursue missing children as the resources do not exist). As the cafe comes into view they see Wayne, looking forlorn, waiting for them on the pavement.

Gail and David returns home to find a very depressed Sarah - David immediately identifies that she has been dumped. Gail tries to re- assure Sarah but gets no response and she stumps upstairs.

Wayne has consumed a meal and looks a lot happier. He spent the night under a lorry - and they have been so worried. Wayne asks if they can look after him but it seems unlikely - even Wayne spots the "but". Life is more complicated than it should be, as Roy observes they are 7500 foster carers short. Hayley tries to explain that "they" have to be sure that any child is safe. Wayne asks that if goes back and behaves is there are any chance that he can come to them? They don't know - but they all hope it might be possible.

Gail finds David reading Harry Potter in the garden - is he cold? However at this moment Danny, Sally, gurls and engagement ring arrive. As Danny explains Sally has been pestering him for months and he has finally agreed to get married. At least he is going to make an honest woman of her. Rosie and David discuss the planned wedding and mothers and fathers living in different houses. David tells Rosie to leave him alone. (And at long last we find who inherited the plank - Rosie's performance was more wooden than the floorboard under this chair - another replacement actress needed please). Danny notes that Sophie inspected the rabbit and that Rosie appeared to envy the swing.

Duggie, as a sensitive employer, has come up with a solution to the clothing problem - proper protection - a uniform for the bar staff. (Geena suggests getting the cellar cleaned would be more profitable). Liz, Geena and Toyah are not immediately impressed and are sent into the back to inspect the new outfit which he has chosen. Duggie starts serving.

Dreary returns home to find a pensive Ken - he has spoken to Susan but there is no problem - but there was tension in her voice. Ken has been sitting there all afternoon with his stomach churning. Ken is certain and he is going to find out what it is?

A few moments later Liz comes out wearing (for her) a flattering and revealing dress. Toyah and Geena have not changed. Geena reckons they are having a giraffe (a laugh). Liz is looking radiant and thinks it is wonderful. Duggie has not got an outfit for betty - he was not sure of her size. Geena announces that she is not going to dress up like a tart and Liz's face becomes completely downcast. Mike, Fred and Duggie all approve the outfit. It is now part of the terms of employment. Geena and Toyah announce that they are no officially on strike - they are in dispute with the management and they walk out.

Danny and Sally are celebrating. Sally is a little worried about Rosie - she seemed a bit downcast when she came out from Gail's. Danny knows why - it is the lack of a garden. And he has a solution - tomorrow he is off to the estate agent to buy a bigger house with a garden. Sally looks troubled by this announcement (just say yes Sally and go!).

Thank you Danny - you are removing Sally from the Street and the place will be instantly happier. Hopefully we will get people who want their rations regularly. What ever happened to the story line that the hardware shop was failing asked my wife?

Wayne - do be a good boy and pop back soon.

Glen - you know it makes sense - find a real raver who will give you your rations. (Candice will oblige I am sure).

Tyrone - let Maria have her rations soon.

David - it is pleasing to know you can read - sadly the rest of your behaviour is less pleasing - but at least I assume you are acting and that you are not really like that!!

An early word of warning. I am likely to be de-netted for a couple of weeks (maybe longer) at the end of March and may need cover for a couple of episodes.

Also we are still not reporting all episodes - any volunteers out there? -- K Richard Whitbread

Monday 8 January

Candice apologies for telling Sarah about Glen. Sarah is pleased otherwise she may never had found out.

Toyah and Gina tell Dev that they are on strike. They are trying to persuade people not to go to the Rovers, they are going to organise a picket.

Maria's Dad comes to the garage to see Tyrone. He wants him to try and patch things up with her. They both blame each other and kiss and make up.

The girls start a picket line, and Edna tries to go in, but they fail to stop her.

Fred comes and sees the banner and is outraged, and tries to pull down the banner. He goes in and tells Duggie about what has happened.

Peter comes round to Ken. He complains that Ken had cross examined Susan like a judge. Peter tries to persuade Ken to leave it. Ken decides he is going to take the train up to Scotland tomorrow, to see Susan.

Toyah stops Les from going into the pub. Betty comes along and she wants to know what is going on. She goes into the pub, and sees what is happening and tells the proprietors she is also going on strike. The pub is deserted. The proprietors are worried that they will be out of business within a week.

Liz tells Steve that they are moving Jim to another prison, miles away.

Sarah comes into the medical centre and tells Gail that she is not feeling well and is going home to lie down.

Steve tells Liz that the prison in Leicester is probably nicer than the one he is in now. However she says she may well not be there if it wasn't for him being close by.

Mike is outside the pub trying to bring guys into the pub. He offers the first drink free and the rest half price. Nobody wants to come in. Mike offers to negotiate.

Maria and Tyrone enjoy making up, snogging. Now Maria says she wants to wait a bit before doing it.

Tyrone makes extensive demands, including extra half hour coffee break, and 20% pay rise. When they refuse, they go back on strike.

David says Sarah can't be ill, because she isn't in bed.

Maria says she doesn't not want to, but just not tonight. It doesn't have to wait till their wedding night. They agree to pick a special night.

Gail asks Sarah if she led Glen on at all. She says she didn't. She feels that they think of her as a slag at school.

Liz explains to Deidre about Jim's move. She feels she is out of control.

Sarah tries to explain that everyone is pointing the finger at her, even girls that she doesn't even know. Gail says if she doesn't know them, then it doesn't matter. David overhears some of the conversation and tells Sarah that he likes her, and Bethanie.

Toyah is beginning to have cold feet (and feeling cold!), but Gina says she will stick with it if she will.

Peter tells Ken that Susan will come to Wetherfield on Wednesday. He thinks it is because she doesn't want him to see what is going on in Scotland. Peter tells him he will find out on Wednesday.

Fred and Mike think they ought to stand firm against the girls. Duggie thinks they are losing money hand over foot. Liz complains they are all drinking and not paying for it. Mike accusses her as gloryfied barmaid. She says she has been toying with what to do about Jim moving. She says the whole place is mismanaged. That has made up her mind, she is quitting.

So who is left to run the bar ..... what is Susan secret? ... all will be revealed - soon!

Wednesday 10 January

Vivienne Smith here again.< vivienne.smith@virgin.net>

A bit shorter than usual as I have a couple of episodes to catch up on. Thanks for your kind comments. And to Douglas Tucker; like the other updaters I volunteer to do this. We each write in our own style. As you don' t like mine I expect you'll be volunteering to take over and do a better job. Meanwhile, my comments stay in unless the number of mails praising them declines and the number of people telling me "Stop with the editorials. I subscribe for the update, not your opinions." rises to more than one.

This episode was written by Susan Wilkins and directed by Jim Loach.

This week we open at The Kabin where Candice is collecting her wage packet for her paper round. (She must have to get up at four in the morning to get her hair and all that slap done before she leaves the house.) Sarah enters and does not look pleased to see her long-suffering friend. She still has what my brother calls " a right monk on". She is feeling very hard done by and is not happy because she can't go to the school Christmas party that evening. I can't think that an evening of soft drinks in the school hall, music by the maths master who ran a mobile disco in 1978, and a last dance with some spotty oik who tries to get his tongue in your mouth is much of a loss. Candice points out that as Glen goes to a different school he won't be there anyway. Sarah moans on, she says she can't get a babysitter. Candice has had enough and points out that if Sarah really wanted to go then Hayley would babysit, and that she can't blame Bethany for her troubles. The truth is, of course, not welcome.

Over the road Deirdre is rearranging those horrible flowers outside the shop. Why? They are beyond help. She is not at all delighted to see Dev and Geena arrive together and partake of some serious snogging before getting out of the car.

Emily asks Emma how the wedding preparations are going and learns that the m ajor stumbling block is Curly's speech. Emily offers to pop in later and see if she can assist. (Tell him a few dirty jokes perhaps?)

In the Rovers the three Stooges meet to discuss their management strategy (Huh!). First agenda item, whose name will go over the door? Fred asks why Duggie is getting all the publicity. Duggie reminds his compadres that he is the celebrity. Mike just wants to get on with things. (As Mike has a drink/driving record I don't think he can hold the license anyway, isn't that why Vera's name went over the door instead of Jack's?)

Emily asks Rita about Anthony and learns that he doesn't yet know where he will live once he has sold his house. (But we can all guess, can't we boys and girls?) He is going to enjoy one last Christmas in the family home before he sells it. I'm afraid it looks as though Reet and Tone may soon be living in sin - yeeeuch!!

Back over the other side of the bar the stooges have managed to agree on bugger all! Geena suggests that if they can't agree they should draw straws, but the boys don't think that is a sensible way to make business decisions.

Natalie tells the staff that her cousin has told her about a cottage in the Cotswolds that is available to rent. She is going to leave the pub on New Tear's Eve and move to the cottage until after her baby is born, then think what to do.

In the corner shop Dev asks Deirdre's opinions of two possible Christmas pressies he has in mind for a special lady. "A pair of earrings or a gym membership?" Deirdre gets stars in her eyes until he adds "I don't want Geena to be upset, she's so fit, I' don't want to insult her by offering her a gym membership". Collapse of Drear. Whatever makes her think she stands a chance with Dev. (The same blind optimism that convinces me that I'd stand a chance with Kevin Costner, I suppose!)

Liz pops in to tell Deirdre how much she is looking forward to spending Christmas Day chez Barlow.

We return to the Rovers where, gentle viewer, you will not be surprised to learn that our trio of Mine Hosts are still not agreeing about anything. Fred wants to sell his meat products over the counter and Mike protests that he can hardly do the same with ladies knickers. This is a silly argument anyway because Fred already supplies the meat for Betty's hotpots and delivers his pies daily. Fred suggests that as the most important decision is the name of the licensee they should draw straws to see who it will be. Duggie nearly has a fit, Fred having been agin that idea from the start. Natalie holds the straws. Fred claims to have won because he drew the short straw! Duggie points out that he has actually lost! So the name which will replace the euphonious appellation of Natalie Felicity Barnes is ta-ra Sir Douglas St Crushington Ferguson.

Kevin meets Natalie on the street and asks her about leaving Weatherfield. He is going to miss her. He feels he has lost too many people in 2000.

Emily is planning to pop in on Curly and Norris decides to invite himself along. Emily wants to go on her own as she feels that she and her ex-lodger have a very special relationship. "Like us?" says Norris. "No" says Emily!

Ken and Deirdre are enjoying a quiet drink in the Rovers. Well, he is enjoying a quiet drink, Deirdre is enjoying a quiet fantasise about Dev and a canister of squirty cream. Her reverie is interrupted by the arrival of Peter who tells them that he will be staying over for Christmas and visiting Susan at New Year. Deirdre is most undelighted by this news as she has invited Liz to share the turkey and Liz won't sit at the same table as Peter. Oh go on Liz! It's the only wood you'll see this Yuletide! Peter thinks he can make up with Liz but this does not pacify Deirdre who has a full on neck tendon frenzy by now. Ken says that if it comes to a choice Peter is family.

At the Platt's Martin has arrived to take David to football. He asks Gail if the Christmas dinner invitation is still open. He has managed to change shifts and would like to spend some time with the family. Gail tells him that he is very welcome.

Gail is going into he Health Centre to do some overtime and tells Sarah that she will have to pick up Bethany who is teething and fractious. Sarah just turns up the volume of the television.

At Curly's Emily asks Curly to say what he thinks about his feelings and she will try to write it down for his groom's speech. This is a very touching little scene as Emma comes in unseen and overhears what he has to say. I think I've got this verbatim. "I just feel so lucky. Before, when bad things used to happen to me I used to think you're Norman Watts, what did you expect? And then Emma came into my life and suddenly it's all changed. It's like it's my turn. It's like someone up there has gone, well he has been through the mill, but he's earned himself some remission for good behaviour, so for now, at least, we're going to let him be happy."

Back in the Rovers the bosses are still discussing and are still not deciding anything. Mike wants a Happy Hour but Fred doesn't. Fred wants to put on more food but Mike doesn't. Fred starts on again about Duggie "grabbing" the licenseeship. Duggie raises his eyes to heaven! Deirdre tells Liz that Peter has changed his Christmas arrangements and Liz says that in that case she won't come to dinner. Kevin asks Natalie if she will come the theatre with him as a satisfied customer has given him a couple of tickets. Natalie is pleased to accept.

Charlie calls on Sarah to complain about the noise, It seems that the more Bethany cries the louder Sarah turns up the TV.

And what is happening in the red corner with our happy hosts. Yes! They're still bloody arguing. Loudly! Fred thinks Duggie is too competitive. Duggie accuse Fred of thinking he is Fred Al Fayed. (Best line of the episode in my opinion!) Mike has finally had enough and decides that he didn't marry a woman half his age just to spend his evenings with blokes twice his size. Fred and Duggie look on in amazement. What did they say?

Over the road Charley tries to talk to Sarah about her problems. She tells her that however down she is feeling she should not take it out on Bethany by ignoring her. She says that if Sarah suffers any problems at school she is willing to step in and say something.

However when she has gone it is obvious that Sarah resents the teachers attempts to help as much as she does Candice's. "Who does she think she is? She's not going to try and tell us what to do" she tells Bethany.

The End

Friday 12 January

Ken has a go at Susan for not telling him about his grandson Adam, Eileen is thinking about renting the McDonalds house. Tyrone ask's Dennis for advice on women but Dennis tell's him to talk to Kevin instead but he tells him to make Maria feel special. Linda put Gina in charge of the Rovers when she is not there. Sally told Danny that she has decided to move house but want's to do up her house first before selling as she thinks they could get more money for the house that way. Liz leaves Weatherfield again this time to be near Jim.

Ken give's his word to Susan that Mike will never find out about Adam from him. Linda moves Douggie in to the rovers to keep Toyah company, much to Toyah's delight (not). Steve let's Eileen rent the McDonalds house for £290 a month. Susan is letting Ken meet Adam, Tyrone and Maria have a candle-lit dinner, Tyrone is scared that he will be a disap poinment to Maria, but Maria leads Tyrone upstairs.

Writing updates is an interesting little diversion and I am glad for the many messages received offering thanks for my efforts and those of the others who also take part. We could always do with a few more willing to take part and I am grateful to Phil for offering to cover my anticipated absence. Anyone else want to join - it takes about an hour per episode and you get the chance to improve the content of the original programme, although Douglas Tucker may comment!

Meanwhile my family ... oops sorry

Tonight's Street was courtesy of ITV Television and inevitably between Christmas and Easter Cadbury's Creme Eggs - how do you eat yours?

Written by Mark Wadlow, directed by Colin Cant

We open in the back room of the Rovers where Duggie is eating breakfast. Sadly he is eating food owned by Toyah - muesli and milk. Toyah is deeply unhappy, there was no hot water because Duggie has used it all. She does not want him intruding on her personal space. Toyah grabs the muesli and milk and storms off. Duggie smiles.

Along at the garage a smiling happy Tyrone hands a car over to its owner. As Dennis observes someone got lucky. When asked if things went well Tyrone informs the world that with a sex god like him it was bound to. Although the first time was not great, but the second time was better and well the third time was better still and the fourth and fifth times were really great. Dennis decides this is more information than he needs to know. Tyrone continues grinning inanely.

Along at the Barlows Ken has heard from Susan - she and Adam will be along later. Ken asks Deirdre not to tell her mother. Both Ken & Dreay think that Susan is wrong not to tell Mike about Adam but clearly he would make their lives very difficult. As Deirdre observes however today is a day for grandfather and grandson to get to know each other.

Eileen is moving into the "MacDonalds" house. Dennis comes to greet her and asks after the boys. Jason does not care where he lives and Todd wants somewhere with a swimming pool. There are cardboard boxes everywhere. Eileen asks if Dennis is concerned about living in the same street as her. He reckons it is great she is moving in - although the tiles behind the sink need re-grouting. She taps him in the stomach and they both grin.

Back in the bar of the Rovers Toyah continues to lay down conditions to Duggie for co-habitation - different nights not working on the rota. Duggie agrees to this one. Toyah wants a lock on her bedroom door. Duggie does not understand. Duggie asks if they could try and get along - Toyah is not keen on the idea calling him creep. He has left a box containing "24 x Brittania" on the counter and Toyah sets about trying to open it (without much obvious success). (They are beer glasses).

Down at the corner shop Karen Phillips who went out with Vik last night is complaining that it finished far too early. Vik has a business to run and could not stay out past 4. It looks like another date is on the cards (and amazingly she did not sleep with Vik on the first date - unlike her previous dates). Mike pays Dreary and departs. Dev appears and manages to get out of Deirdre the entire story of Adam, including the identity of the father. Dev says that Susan cannot keep the information from either Adam or Mike, Dreary says she agrees but cannot be seen to be taking sides. Dev reckons it is bound to come out - well it is now {Can you see Dev keeping this to himself?}

Back at the Rovers a clumsy Toyah fails to open the box and cuts the palm of her hand seriously with a knife. Duggie does not like what he sees. Duggie rushes her over to the health centre but even now Toyah is not willing to accept that Duggie is doing this without an ulterior motive. Duggie admits he does not like her - but she has cost him many thousands of pounds. He tries to explain that she is wrong about him and he goes as far as admitting that he did step over the line in evicting Phil Simmonds - who was not paying rent - but he was in a tight corner and needed to redevelop the flats to make some money. Toyah is not buying it (and given the way he treated Debs she is right not to swallow all of it). Toyah goes into the Doctor's surgery.

Danny is painting the wall a revolting shade of green. Apparently they have had it in stock since they opened and you can see why. Sally cannot live with the colour but Danny is reluctant to use white paint - they can sell that! Sally points out they will never sell the house with the colour and they will have to look at it for 12 months. Danny has to capitulate and agree to paint it white. Sally then suggests that they could sand down the floor and make it look nice. Danny says they should not make it "too nice" - or Sally will not want to move (she doesn't and she hopes he won't want to either - too transparent by half). And remember she has not discussed moving with Kevin yet!!

At Roy's Rolls Hayley gives an impassioned speech that Wayne is settled somewhere. The pain of coming and going of children is something they are going to have to accept although Hayley is not certain how anyone can accept the departures. Roy hopes it will become easier with time - although he is not sure it will. Hayley goes upstairs.

The doctor is cleaning Toyah's cut. It is not too serious and she does not need stitches. She was close to severing an artery - but it does need rest. Duggie gets a shock when Toyah emerges - she has been told it is a workplace accident and she can sue him for thousands. He looks very worried until se see Toyah's broad smile.

Back at the Barlows Susan arrives and introduces a monosyllabic Adam. Deirdre gets the drinks and the visitors sit and we dissolve into the break.

After the break Kev goes into the office and he discusses the weekend with Dennis and Tyrone. The latter has Maria's parents house for the weekend to themselves - one guess what they will be doing. Kev picks up the paper open at the agony page and starts to read the star letter - from the same girl as last week. "I followed your advice and we have finally gone to bed together. How can I tell him that his performance was very disappointing - a total flop - but he is bragging to his mates. How do I tell him the truth? Tyrone soon twigs that they are having him on and all laugh.

Back at the Barlows Ken is trying to extract information from the reluctant Adam (I was struck by the lad - good performance which coming so soon after Wayne's contribution goes to prove that some youngsters can be very good). Ken hardly knows where to start. They live outside the city because it is cheap (but sadly boring). Adam wants to ask a question - why did Ken and Susan fall out - it was a silly argument but both hope it is behind them. Adam then asks if he has met his father. Ken lies - no he didn't (but what choice does he have, and admission would open the wound). Adam admits his favourite subject is English and Ken smiles - then they have a lot in common - he used to teach it, so if needs any help - just ask. big smiles from everyone except Deirdre.

Back at Roys Rolls Hayley comes downstairs into the cafe. She is feeling a lot better and she kisses Roy. Alex Swinton walks in and asks for a coffee. Wayne is having a hard time with the foster parents and could do to go on the school trip the next week to London - but he cannot afford it. Roy suggests that the money he gave for the trainers should be used. But Alex says he bought the trainers. Roy (perhaps for the first time) gets extremely forceful and tells Alex to leave - how dare he take advantage of the Croppers. Roy reckons that if the same effort was put into looking after Wayne as opposed to extorting cash then the boy would not be in care. Alex departs.

Jason, the Olympic hopeful is warming down in a chair. He refuses to carry boxes upstairs in case he does his back in. There is plate of chips on the side - hardly good food for an athlete. Todd comes in to complain - he cannot live here, it has a bad vibe and only two bedrooms - he cannot share with his brothers' trainers. A trainer shoots across the room and he pretends to gag and depart. Eileen reckons they are bonkers.

Duggie has made Toyah some tea with his tea and would she like one of his digestives? She smiles and as he departs she thanks him for taking her to the doctors. A truce seems to have broken out (at least for now).

Back at Eileen's Jason is on the phone discussing his training. Dennis is asked to stay but Dennis says that Todd does not seem keen on him. Eileen asks Todd and he responds that he always makes all of her boyfriends welcome! Eileen says to Dennis "What did I tell you?"

Danny has just about painted the room white (in fact he seems to have finished it - and is overpainting a very white bit) when Kev arrives to return the gurls after a shopping trip. It must be ten years since the room was decorated he observes. Well Danny explains we have to make it look good to sell it and get a better price. Kev asks if they are moving. Danny says sorry - he thought Sally told him everything. Sally tries to explain as Danny resumes painting.

At the Barlows, Ken is showing old photographs to Adam - including Uncle Albert, which we see. He was more than just an Uncle to both Peter and Ken. Susan says they have to go - but they will meet again. Susan is leaving the house when she sees Mike outside and makes an excuse to go back in. Susan and Dreary exchange a few words - it has gone well and both Ken and Adam are enjoying the company of the other. Perhaps suggests Deirdre that Mike should be brought into the happy circle. Susan warns that if Mike gets to know then Ken and Dreary will never see Adam again.

Good acting from Adam. Sadly Jason and Todd were not great. Given that I assume they will be around for a while I hope they will grow on me. And I wanted to know more Eileen - so let us hope that she will be around for a while.

So how long is it going to take for the secret to reach Mike - a couple of weeks - perhaps longer? And did Linda have an abortion? We know she denies it - but ...

See you all again next week. -- K Richard Whitbread

Monday 15 January

Eileen gets the boys sorted out with various jobs over breakfast. Dennis comes down, and they are a bit embarassed.

Ken is in a good mood, because he has found a long lost grandson. He tells Deidre that they could be one big family. Deidre reminds him that Adam also has a father as well as a grandfather.

Maxine wants to make sure that Ashley is in perfect health. She takes a couple of strands of hair for testing.

Tyrone asks Maria how good he was. After telling her he dosen't discuss it at work, Dennis comes by and teases him.

Vik comes into the shop and tells Deidre that he has short changed him. She discusses what is on her mind with Dev. Dev thinks Mike ought to be told.

Curly and Emma come back from holiday. Les starts talking to the taxi driver for tips. The driver just drives off. Curly carries Emma over the threashold, but the key breaks in the lock.

Dennis comes round to the house while Eileen is out. One of the boys hints that he won't be the first to get the key to the door.

Mike comes into the shop, and Deidre is being over poilite to him, but he has no suspicions.

Emma and Curley go round to Maxine and Ashleys. Maxine offers to put them up, but Curly says Steve will fix it for them. They are full of enthusiasm for New York. When Ashley doesn't eat biscuits with them, he hints that he maybe on a diet, but then tells them they are trying for a baby.

Eileen goes into the pub with the boys. Mike Baldwin says no kids allowed. They try to hint they are doing a school project on sucessful businessmen. Mike doesn't hold with it, and tells them to scarper.

Tyrone boats to Maria how good he is at "it". Maria is embarassed.

Eventually Emma and Curly get into the house, and Curly carries her in.

Eileen is organising a house warming party at her house. Les threatens to bring her records.

Ken talks to Mike in the pub, and Deidre is biting her lip to say something.

Les offers himself to Vik for a job at Streetcars. He says he will have the "knowledge" after the test on Wednesday.

Dennis says that he was talking to Jason earlier. She becomes defensive. However he says he really likes her and dosen't want to be a guy that comes and goes. She doesn't want that either.

Vik tells Steve that Les was there for a job. Vik is annoyed, but Steve doesn't think he will get the knowledge.

Eileen has a go at the boys about talking to Dennis about her past.

Deidre tells Ken how upset she is about not talking to Mike about Adam. She says she hasn't seen Susan for 12 years, now he seems to care for her more than Deidre. Ken doesn't want it to get into a competition over it. He says he is being loyal to his daughter, and expects his partner to be loyal to him. He asks who she is being loyal to.

Wednesday 17 January

Yes it's me again, back to cold Britain and wearing lots of jumpers!

I'd like to send a big thank you to Vivienne for looking after you while I was away. She did a great job.

Now back to Wed...

Eileen is late for work. She rushes out of the house leaving her bag behind. The boys immediately pounce on it and liberate her purse.

Tyrone tells Kevin they need more handwash stuff for the garage. Maria went mad last night when he got grease all over her (chortle, chortle).

Max books Ash for lunch as it's an optimum conceiving time.

Ken has been on the phone to Tracy. He tells Deirdre they've been invited to London. Blanche gets excited, she's been looking for an excuse to get out of Emily's charity charabanc trip. But Ken tells her gently she's not invited. Deirdre however is not happy. They're supposed to go tomorrow but that's too short notice to leave Dev in the lurch. She doesn't even consider asking him (what is wrong with the woman?)

Vik is showing Karen round "my empire" (ie Streetcars). She however is not impressed, as the place smells of last night's drunken vomit. Vik asks Eileen to give the place a clean but that isn't in her job description and she goes on to tell him to stop showing off in front of his girlfriend. Karen leaves and Vik tries to tell Eileen off. She just packs him off on his fare and tells him to get some Marigolds on his way back.

Les is doing some final cramming for his Knowledge. Janice is very impressed, he's only got one wrong. Steve arrives and warns him about one way streets and being asked how to get from one street to another when they're just next to each other.

In the Post Office, Eileen discovers her purse is missing when she goes to get some fags. She isn't pleased when Norris refuses her tick.

Ash has missed his appointment so Max turns up at the shop and literally drags him away from the counter. The other guy is supposed to be meeting his mam but agrees to cover. He wishes he were in Ash's shoes.

Sam in on his way to get the hand cleaner when he meets Uncle Pat. He can get knock-off stuff at half price. But Sam can get the full price from Kevin and pocket the difference, and "no-one will ever know". (Yeh right!)

Over in the Rovers, Vik has a hot night planned with Karen and asks Steve to stay out of the flat. Gail and Martin are discussing the Parent's Evening tonight. She feels strange that they're going as a couple, but is glad he'll be there. Martin points out they're not the only ones in this situation. Les returns from the exam looking glum. The boys sympathise, but he then reveals he passed! And he's got an early driving test, so don't worry lads, I'll soon be driving for you!

Interval

Les's news has not gone down well. While he's at the bar, Vik tells Steve he has to tell Les he can't have a job. Steve spins the line that the business isn't doing well and they're actually laying people off. He didn't know this at the time he offered Les the job. Sorry. Les sees through this and is hurt and disappointed.

Over at the bar, Mike accosts Gail. Would she bring her kids to the Rovers? Certainly not, it's too smoky for a start. Mike reminds her of their (1) no-smoking table (fat lot of good that will do), but she's unimpressed. Well, they're always welcome, it's in the license.

The butcher boy can wait no longer and knocks Ash out of bed. Max sticks her head out of the window and tells him to get back quick before her body temperature drops.

Les meets Janice outside the pub and tells her the news. She's delighted and praises him for doing so well. When he tells her about the job, her immediate reaction is concern for Eileen. But Les tells her he's just being fobbed off.

Ken goes to the shop when Deirdre is out and asks Dev to give her 2 weeks off. He's not happy about the short notice but agrees she needs a break and gives in quite easily. Deirdre arrives just after they reach an agreement and is not happy. She tells Ken they'll "discuss this later". She then apologises to Dev but he thought it was sweet of Ken. He won't let her back out of it.

At the parent's evening, the Platts hear that Sarah is approaching the bottom of the class. Her homework is very poor and often handed in late. She can catch up if she works hard, but if she falls much further behind there's a danger she'll drop out.

Ash is locking up the shop when Norris rushes up for his chops. Max points to their opening hours, (she's dragging Ash to bed again!!) but Norris was there earlier and it was shut. They still refuse to open and he tells them he won't be troubling them again.

Eileen rushes to the bus as it soars away. Janice is there and asks about the business. She's a bit shocked to hear they're desperate for drivers.

Karen arrives in the Rovers and takes Vik off to a film. Geena comments to Steve that they suit each other. Why doesn't she ever see him with a girl? At the bar, Ken apologises to Deirdre. She felt like a fool but she agrees to go to London.

Eileen was trying to get to the parent's evening and receives short shrift from the teacher for being 45 mins late. She's finished now and is going on to another appointment. She hardly speaks to Eileen except to tell her off for not monitoring Todd's homework. She has her back to her most of the time and doesn't see Eileen's furious scowl as she leaves. She meets up with both her sons coming back from the chippy and has a go at the pair of them, one for stealing her money and one for being a bad student.

Gail muses that she's the cause of Sarah's poor results. She hands Bethany to her as soon as she gets in from school. Martin thinks this is right, Sarah has to take responsibility, but Gail doesn't want this to be at the expense of her education.

Steve is at the bar and Les sympathises with his business problems and buys him a drink (is that a first?) Janice arrives and calls Steve a lying toad. Streetcars has plenty of jobs, it's just they don't want Les to have one. Why did you offer him a job if you didn't mean it? Because I didn't think he'd take it seriously. No-one would have bet on him passing the exam. Les is sick of people looking down their noses at him. Who's fault is that Les? Hey MacDonald, your family keep that nick in business! (good riposte!) I've never hung around with junkies or murderers! Steve capitulates and gives him a week's trial. But mess up once and you're out. The Battersbys leave in triumph and Geena offers Steve a large one. He's going to need it.

Friday 19 January

It's Friday night and the end of another week in Coronation Street. Your director is David Kester..

Tyrone and Maria meet outside the garage. Maria reveals to Tyrone that she has a problem. Unsurprisingly Tyrone thinks that Maria is pregnant. Maria says she isn't but she has a rash all over her body. Tyrone asks for a look and the two go into the garage..

Gail and Eileen walk down the street and meet Charlie Ramsden. Gail asks Charlie for a good tutor but the one the teacher recommends is 12.50 an hour. Eileen says, "Who'd have kids?"

Tyrone and Maria come out of the garage. Tyrone wonders what the rash is. She says she has no idea and hopes that he knew.

Meanwhile in Chez Webster, Danny and Sally show the girls the newly decorated back room. The kids ask if their room can be decorated - Danny agrees to start it this weekend.

In the Kabin, Norris is complaining to Duggie about the noise coming from outside the Rovers' last night. Mike Baldwin comes in and blames Street Cars and asks Duggie how the idea of letting kids into the Rovers' is going.

Outside Street Cars it's Les's first day and agrees to meet Vik and Steve outside there at lunchtime. The taxi rank owners are not pleased.

Across the street, Tyrone asks Dennis if he's ever had any physical problems with any of his girlfriends. After thinking long and hard Dennis reveals that he once knew a woman with a hairy back.

Maxine meets Ashley outside the Salon and reveals that she has half an hour off. The couple head off for home..

In the Rovers' Duggie shows Les and Janice the board he has made saying that kids will be allowed in there. Janice doesn't agree with the idea and Les says it will take all the fun out of what he used to do - as a child, sit outside the pub on the steps eating crisps. Fred storms in after finding the sign outside and demands a chat in the back with Duggie who protests that it was in fact, Mike's idea.

In the Duckworth's house, Maria asks Tyrone if he has been seeing anyone else. Tyrone is shocked and says that he took long enough to "do it with her for him to go off and do it with someone else". Maria says that she's told her friend Louise and Tyrone says that now everyone will know. The worried couple cuddle.

Les with Janice in tow races back to Streetcars in car number 7. (The taxi firm only has four cars but number 7 makes it seem like they have more) Vikram asks Les to take a blonde lade to Prestwich which according to him should take just fifteen minutes each way. Janice refuses to pay the 3.30 owed to Les for a journey to and from Freshcos.

Outside the Rovers' an irate Fred meets Audrey. She says that hungry kids would be good for business. When they get to the Salon they find it closed and Audrey wonders where Maxine is. Fred says that the couple are trying for a new branch to the family tree. Across the road, Duggie asks Danny if "Rachel" and "Suzy" will be coming into the new kids-orientated Rovers. After pointing out that the former Rugby player got the names wrong Danny says that Sally wouldn't go for it.

Inside, Mike to Eileen to bring her boys in and that they should tell all their friends. Eileen says that the place needs doing up first. Norris complains about the prospect of having a noisy pub full of teenagers and asks Steve if it was his car that made the noise at 11:17 the previous night. Steve says it was and that it was the car booked for Mike and Linda.

In the Health Centre, Tyrone looks around nervously and goes up to Gail sat at the receptionists' desk. He says that he wants to book an appointment for a rash. After saying that it's an emergency after Gail offered him an appointment for Monday evening. Dr Ramsden asks to see him now. Tyrone says that it is his fiance that has the rash and not him. Gail books an appointment for the pair of them at 6:30 with Dr Ramsden.

Meanwhile in the Grimshaw household, Todd is finding his English Literature homework hard. Dennis and Eileen haven't a clue and Eileen suggests that seeing as how Mrs Ramsden is helping Sarah-Lou that she will help Todd as well and sends the lad over the road. Eileen looks on as Todd knocks on the door and is refused help by Mrs Ramsden who is finding solstice in a bottle of red wine.

In the Websters, Sally and the girls arrive back just as an estate agent is leaving. Danny convinces Sally that the house will sell for a good price after he has re-decorated it.

Next door, Todd tells his mum that Mrs Ramsden swore at him and refused to help him. Eileen is mad claiming that the teacher is helping "up the duff" Sarah-Lou but not Todd. She charges across the street and accuses Mrs Ramsden of being a "condescending little cow" and that she will help Sarah-Lou because she lives on the 'right side of the street'. Eileen kicks the door after Mrs Ramsden closes it.

In the Health Centre, Dr Ramsden checks Maria's rash and says that it is unlikely that the rash has been caused by Tyrone. After saying that it could be a reaction to a change in washing powder (he's getting warmer - Phil) or a sudden reaction to the dogs in the kennels he gives Maria some cream and tablets and tells Tyrone not to worry.

In the Rovers' Steve doesn't know where Les is. Vikram scorns and says that Les has only done one job and "look at the trouble he has caused." Steve compares the disappearance of Les to the time he was delivering a passenger on a short journey only to get beaten up by Jez Quigley and his mob.

The Ramsdens come in and Mrs Ramsden doesn't approve of the idea to allow kids into the pub. Janice hopes that Les (still missing) IS dead if he in fact has done the dirty on his female passenger.

Sunday 21 January

Here at Whitbread Towers I have spent the day in London eating well (easy on the drink though - I was driving) then returning to watch this evening's episode of the Street. Great day!

As ever thanks go to ITV Television whilst the episode was sponsored by Cadbury's Crunchie.

Written by Jo O'Keefe, directed by David Kester

Eileen is seeking to re-assure Janice about the mysterious disappearing Les. Janice got a phone call at 1am but she hung up on him. Janice reckons he will be outside the slapper's house and he will be in hospital when she gets her hands on him - if he is not in one now.

Along at the Duckie's Maria is scratching like mad. The cream is not having much effect. Tyrone suggests a walk but she is not happy.

In the Street Charlie Ramsden walks past Eileen without acknowledging her - "Stuck up cow" - she should have helped Todd. Dennis tries to suggest she is taking it too far. Eileen has been shopping for the party and has forgotten the crisps - she meets the "cow" coming out the corner shop. Eileen tells her that she is uninvited to the party. "Good" responds Charlie - it was not high on my list of social priorities anyway.

Steve is asking Janice where Les is - he has one of their cabs - but he gets little change out of her - she has no idea and does not want to know.

Along at the Rovers Vik is talking Karen and Bobbi into going to the housewarming party which is key to this episode. Bobbi has not been invited but Vik reckons Eileen won't mind if she turns up. Karen tells her to wear hotpants and boob tube and she might get lucky if there is some talent around. Dennis and Eileen wander into the Rovers and are discussing Todd and Charley. Dennis makes it clear that helping Todd is best served by going across the Street swallowing hard and apologising.

At the other end of the Street Danny and Sally have asked Steve for a quote to make some more space. Sally is not convinced but for 700 and four days work will make some real improvements - I think they are opening up between the front and back rooms. (Don't do it Sal - firstly Danny is not worth it and secondly separate downstairs rooms are much preferred by purchasers).

Down at Roy's Rolls Maria and Tyrone are eating - and she is scratching like mad (has the doctor got his first diagnosis wrong I wonder?). Maria is going home - Tyrone will pick her up in time for the party. Steve arrives in the cafe and tells Kev where he has been. Danny is keen to sell and reckons on a higher price once it has been done up - they will soon be gone. Kev looks stunned - he knew but not that they were going so soon - not this quickly.

Martin brings David into the Rovers (it has a child licence which is a great surprise to me). So the lads who lunch are in the Rovers. Betty has a kids menu - but David protests he is nearly 11 and eats from the adult menu.

Dennis is explaining to Eileen that she should try and get along with Charlie - what is the point of a housewarming without inviting all the Street. We then have a lovely piece of the Street. Eileen agrees to invite the cow providing Dennis says she was never wrong. Dennis agrees that she was always 100% right, that Charlie is a stuck up cow and not for one minute was Eileen incorrect, Eileen is fantastic and is never wrong. She remembers why she goes out with him.

Les rolls up at the StreetCars office. Steve and Vik jump on him. Les has a great excuse - which Vik would not listen to on the radio. it was not a 15 minute trip to Prestwich but a round trip to Prestwick airport outside Glasgow. The slapper's husband was coming off the oil rigs and she wanted to surprise him!! He hands over 300 and explains he had to take 60 for petrol. He even slept in the car overnight in a layby and taken a day's sickie off the council. The boys believe him but tell him has not got a chance with Janice. He gets to keep his job.

David and Martin are enjoying the football on the large tv when Gail arrives in the Rovers. Gail is not certain that she is keen on him being in a pub.

As Dennis and Eileen leave Charlie and Matt arrive. Dennis nudges her and Eileen stops. She admits she was out of order before and she hopes they will both come to the party. Matt accepts on behalf of both of them.

Martin sends David around to the flat and he then exchanges views with Gail. Gail reckons there are more appropriate places to take children than pubs. They row.

Tyrone meets Sam at the bar - he is scratching like mad as well and does not know the reason why - he has had it a couple of days.

Les finds Janice at Roys Rolls. She refuses to listen to his explanation. She calls him a sad excuse for a man who cannot tell the truth. She departs.

Kev arrives at Sals. Sally explains events to Kev. Things are moving very quickly, yes Danny is getting a quote for building work, but no final decision has been made. Kev wants to be told first about changes in the childrens' lives - he is their father. Kev reminds Sally that the children are all he has left and Sally looks pained because she is not yet sold on the idea of moving but cannot bring herself to tell either Danny or Kev that.

At the party Les is talking to Todd and Jason, complaining about the music - when Dennis walks in asks for it to be turned down. The boys are not happy! Dennis tells Les to go home and sort it out - not much chance.

At StreetCars Steve and Vik are discussing the party. Steve agrees to cover for Vik - providing he can cover the first hour. Steve goes to change and to the party where Sam and Maria are both scratching. Eileen in chatting to the practice nurse (?) who provides the goss on Charlie - can be poker faced but there is another side to her - dead common underneath.

Maria's brother is trying to chat up Karen and Bobbi. Tyrone is not happy - he has seen that both Maria and Sam are scratching and he has put two and two together. In a wonderful bit Tyrone tells Maria he is going home (where he will hear the party through the wall) because she is all over Sam like a rash. Throughout this he is carrying a pint which he takes home with him!!

Along at the Rovers Matt talks Charlie into going along for a drink - she would prefer a video - but she agrees that Eileen has waved the white flag and it would be the right thing to do. Janice is next to Kev and neither of them are happy. Martin drags Kev to the party. Dennis arrives and tells Janice to go to the party. She is convinced Les is lying but Dennis tells her she is wrong this time.

Back at the party Maria is scratching her leg whilst telling Sam that Tyrone has gone home with a headache. She goes to join him. Bobbi gets rid of Maria's brother. Steve is spending the evening paying compliments to Karen chatting her up. Janice arrives to a warm greeting from Eileen. Todd and Jason observe the arrival of Matt and Charlie - party's over. Matt wants to see the motorbike and he and Dennis depart. Eileen says glad you could make it to Charlie who responds with "Liar" - but both have a smile playing around their mouths.

Martin and Kev are discussing events in the kitchen. Kev is not happy. Les finally gets to speak to Janice. He tells her the story and he brought her a present - a haggis. She thought they were a creature. She is touched (mentally?) but is seen smiling.

Next door Tyrone finally voices his suspicions to Maria about her spending the night with Sam. If he is going to be like that she is going and she storms out. {Poor Maria and Tyrone - the path of true love is not running smoothly at the moment - I reckon it is the new hand cream at the garage myself - but I am not sure how or why that has affected Maria}.

Janice, Eileen and Charlie are together. Janice says that she wants advance notice of future bust ups - they are entertaining. Charlie says that there won't be a next time if Eileen behaves herself! Eileen rises to the bait and then decides she cannot be bothered. The three of them decide to start drinking tequila and Janice is grabbed by Les - she is still angry with him - but he reminds her that they can show the youngsters how to do it and normal relations are resumed.

Steve is starting to make progress with Karen - she feels she has been stood up.

The tequila is going down well! Maria returns to the party and we see Tyrone being consoled by Monica.

Vik arrives and Steve departs 1.5 hours late. Karen is not happy with Vik but soon grasps what has been going on!

Charlie wants another tequila but Eileen has given up - Dennis reckons that she is hard core - a real party animal. Charlie wants to dance and as Matt refuses she grabs Sam and starts raving it up when the lads put on some fast music. Matt ushers Charlie out into the night.

Dennis joins Eileen in the kitchen and she thanks him for his help. She then says it is a bit premature - but she thinks he is amazing and she wants him to be amazing every day - so can he move in with her?

So the po faced teacher is human - she won't live that one down on Monday!

Can someone please fix it for Tyrone and Maria to live happily ever after?

And all is well with Janice and Les again.

Nothing great tonight but some nice little scenes.

See you all next week. -- K Richard Whitbread

Monday 22 January

Eileen tells her boys that they shouldn't tell tales about their teacher getting drunk. She asks Dennis whether she put him on the spot about moving in. He says it was ok.

Charlie is feeling embarassed walking down the street when one of Eileen's boys shouts good morning to her.

Sally gets a call from her sister in Newcastle. She is about to go into hospital, and she can't cope with her family. She tells Danny that Kevin can look after the girls.

Linda suggests that Gina ought to "consolodate" her relationship with Dev. Gina is somewhat perplexed at Linda's motives.

Rita offers to pick up the girls from school, as Kevin is out on a job.

Vikram is annoyed at Steve. He thinks he was trying to chat up Karen from the factory, who he thinks he is dating.

Sam finishes servicing a car, but Tyrone insists on checking it after him.

Gina tells Linda that she has been thinking about what she was saying. She invites Linda to dinner, but Linda invites her instead.

Sally is ready to go to her sister's. She hasn't been able to contact Kevin. Danny tells her not to worry.

Tyrone has an argument with Sam in front of Maria about the rash. He won't listen to either of them, and says he is finished with Maria.

Maria comes round to Tyrone. She says she hasn't been sleeping around. She says if we can't trust each other now, how about the future. She bursts into tears, and Tyrone sees sense.

Danny brings the girls home.

Tyrone apologies to Sam. They realise it is something they have touched last week but never before.

Anthony tells Rita that he has left his bag in the car, so not to give Norris any funny ideas.

Sam goes to see Pat about the grease that he sold him. He has realised that is where the rash came from.

Mike seeing families in the pub. He thinks he has had a good idea, the parents are all spending money there. Linda tells Mike that he has invited Gina and Dev around to dinner. She has hired outside caterers to prepare the dinner.

Dev tells Gina that he doesn't want to go. Then Mike calls over, and Dev says he is looking forward to the dinner.

Tyrone invites Sam over for tea the next night, as part of an apology. Sam mixes some grease from one tub to another.

The girls are having fun playing a computer game with Danny. Sally rings. She is surprised that he hasn't taken them to Kevin.

Dennis tells Eileen that he doesn't get on well with her sons, and he doesn't have their trust. He therefore doesn't feel the time is right for him to move in yet.

Rita and Anthony return to Rita's home, to find Amanada waiting for them. She says she has locked herself out of the house. Anthony gives her his, and says he will collect it in the morning. He explains that he is staying over with Rita (disguisting in my view!!). Rita and Amanda part, saying they will see each other again.

Wednesday 24 January

Eileen is most unhappy with her lads as they haven't welcomed 'Carl Fogarty' into their home. She tries to appeal to their better nature, needless to say it doesn't work. Over in the garage, Dennis is explaining this to Les, he's stressing about it so much, he's even come out in a rash.

Tyrone is making up to Sam by inviting him over to dinner. He's not sure, gooseberries aren't much fun. But we're not having gooseberries, we're having spaghetti bolognese! Would he like to bring someone, surely the Python is fighting the women off? No, sadly Sam doesn't have anyone special in his life.

Rita bumps into Danny and the girls and hears how Sally is at her sisters. Oh, why aren't the girls with Kevin? Danny takes the huff (and I don't understand this automatic assumption either).

The foster board have sent Roy and Hayley their assessment. "a well-balanced couple with a stable home life and mature attitude, offering much of benefit to a child". Roy calms Hayley by reminding her they still have to get past the panel and he thinks that will be the hardest part of the process.

In the Kabin, Emily hears about Rita's evening, and how Amanda warned her off. Rita (in a new, very flattering make-up look), explains that Anthony is oblivious to this. She doesn't want the situation developing to him making a choice between her and his daughter.

Duggie is trying to find someone to move bottles in the Rovers tonight. But both Geena and Toyah have the night off. Never mind, Toyah will only be sitting in the back, she can do it. Tyrone is at the bar and quick as a flash, he says that Toyah is going to theirs for dinner. He omits to tell her that Sam will be there. Mike chats to Dev at the bar, prior to their dinner this evening. 7 shops was it? They have a joke at Duggie's expense, contrasting their business skills over the house sale.

Tyrone finds out about Dennis's rash. He reveals that Sam and Maria have the same problem (don't ask how Maria got it). Dennis remembers a hotel that used dodgy soap, all the clients got a rash. They both rush to the handwash tub. Should it smell like that? Tyrone grabs it and rushes off to give Danny a mouthful in the café. They won't be buying from his shop again.

Jason is training (shock) and runs (literally) into Les outside the house. He puts the frighteners on him for not letting Dennis live with them. This speech was a strange mixture of pathos and menace. Les recounts how Dennis has never had a real home and his van was towed away. Why can't the boys let him and his mum have some happiness together? And if they don't, he'll break their arms.

Interval

It's the Baldwin's dinner party, and Linda has prepared a beautiful table. The meal however, is catered, they're exclusive, she tells Geena. Mike thinks it's just an expensive takeaway. Dev has brought some classy wine (not from the shop). Mike starts talking business and golf with him.

The other party is stirring pots in the kitchen. Tyrone tells Sam about his run-in with Danny and he's just about to confess when Toyah arrives and he forgets what he's saying.

Over in the Rovers, Rita is discussing Amanda again. She tells Emily she can see her point of view. But she doesn't think Amanda will ever see hers. Anthony arrives and Emily goes off to her League of Friends meeting. Rita decides to broach the subject but he pre-empts her. There will be no more of Amanda's tricks. She looks unconvinced.

We learn that Dev and Harvey Reuben share the same gym, but Dev knows him through Harvey's father. Dev used to work at his uncle's in Birmingham, the biggest importer of Indian silk in the UK. They sold to Reuben. Linda suggests a new line, but the girls steal enough as it is. You can tell when they're nicking the bras, they arrive saggy and leave pert. Dev says that they like to keep business in the family. Surely one day Mike will want to leave his empire to Mark. The room turns cold.

Dennis joins Les at the bar and is horrified to hear that he's put it right with the lads. He goes round immediately. In a booth, Roy and Hayley are discussing a phone call they've had from Mr. Harding. He doesn't seem to have said anything they haven't heard before, but it's a reminder, because their panel is now set for Friday!

Sam asks Toyah about her vegetarianism. She guesses he has to eat meat for his body-building (she must know better than this, so perhaps she's just trying to ingratiate herself). Sam explains the intricacies of it, more like a science really, body-builders aren't' thick you know. I never thought you were, flutters Toyah.

Dennis apologies to Eileen for Les's comments, which she hasn't yet heard about. He explains how upset and worried he's been since he said he wouldn't move in. It was so bad he thought it had caused a rash. If she still wants him, he'll pack his bags. Better let your rash clear up first, suggests Eileen. But she's only joking, she tosses her tea-towel over her shoulder and gives him a big hug.

Toyah tells Maria that she's had a good night and Sam isn't what she expected. Tyrone tries to get a similar response from Sam, but he's worried about the handwash and confesses all. Meanwhile, someone has put a plastic bowl on a hot ring which is now burning. Tyrone hurriedly takes it off and puts it to one side. This of course is Vera's new work surface and it's now covered in melted plastic.

Mike and Dev are on the cigars and scotch as Geena reviews Linda's new clothes. Dev apologies for mentioning Mark and Mike waves it away. He was right, he would like to hand it over. Could he not have a child with Linda? No, he's past the baby stage. Dev hypothesises, what if you had a child you didn't know about? As Mike gets interested, Dev tries to back out and says it's just talk, but Mike makes him carry on. OK, but you didn't hear it from me. Susan told you she had an abortion, but she really had the child and didn't tell you. How could Dev know that, Mike wonders. Deirdre told him. And so now Mike believes him when Dev continues; Susan had a son, your son.

Friday 26 January

The show opens in Roy's Rolls where a suited Roy is making a sign telling customers that the caf is closed today. Alma comes in and wishes them both luck at their meeting with the fostering panel. Roy says they should know by Lunchtime and Alma says that they'll make fantastic parents.

At Mikes, Linda says she is glad that Dev and Geena are together. A pre-occupied Mike leaves on his own to work.

Danny loads Rophie & Sophie into his van on the school run. Across the street Kevin emerges from the Kabin and waves at Rosie & Sophie as they are driven away. Sam greets Kevin and says he's got a breakdown on the phone - Kevin agrees to take it. Rita emerges from the Kabin and asks Kevin if Sally has phoned with any news. Kevin doesn't know what Rita is talking about and Rita lets it slip that Sally is in Newcastle with her sick sister. Kevin works out that Danny has had the girls since Monday.

Mike arrives for work at the factory. Blanche says Good Morning to him but Mike ignores her.

Roy and Hayley have arrived early for their meeting with the fostering panel. Peter is already inside giving his report on Roy and Hayley to the panel. Roy suggests that they should instead of imagine the panel as people they don't know to instead imagine them as people they know to make them less nervous. Hayley says that this is a good idea, Peter comes out of the room after giving his report and says that they are ready for them..

At the Duckworths, Tyrone is scrubbing hard on the worktop he burnt. He is not having much luck and has a go at Maria when she is asking him how he is doing. Maria makes three suggestions; to cover it up, to ask Danny for help or to tell Jack and Vera the truth. The pair decide on the second choice.

Roy and Hayley are introduced one-by-one to the members of the fostering panel. The pair are first asked to describe their relations with Wayne whom they took in at Christmas. Roy says that the experience told him that they still have a lot to learn about looking after children, however, it is very rewarding. One of the panel ask them about the fostering panels' wide age range on possible children they could get. Hayley says that they have lots of friends with children of all ages that they could turn to for help if they needed it. The panel seems impressed.

In the corner shop, Mike comes in looking Deirdre. Dev tells him that she and Ken are in London. Mike doesn't like this and says he will go and ask someone else.

It's 10:05 and the meeting with the fostering panel has finished and Roy and Hayley believe it has gone well.

Mike stands banging on Ken Barlow's door (though who he expects to find there given that he knows he and Deirdre are in London is anybodys guess..) Dev calms Mike down and takes him into the shop.

At the fostering meeting, the clock says 10:35. The meeting ended half an hour ago and Roy and Hayley are worried. Roy peers around the door of the room where the panel are and is shocked to see one of the members of the panel laid out on the table. Peter comes out and says that they think Robert (the lawyer on the team) has suffered a heart attack. He suggests that they go home and wait for news there.

In the corner shop, Mike asks Dev what he should do. Dev doesn't know so Mike asks him if he knows where Susan is - Dev again doesn't know and says he has nothing else to say except that the boys name is Adam. Mike is worked up and Dev tries to reassure him.

Tyrone is pestering Danny to go round and fix the Duckworths' work surface. Danny says he will do his best. Kev catches Tyrone coming out of the house and tells him to get back to work. Kevin asks Danny why he didn't have the kids, Danny says he can look after them himself but Kevin says he is their father. The two argue when Danny suggests he picks the girls up from school and keeps them which Kevin unsurprisingly, doesn't like.

Roy and Hayley are in the caf, worried. They are waiting for news from the fostering panel and are worrying about Robert who had a heart attack. Alma comes in and asks them how it went. Roy and Hayley explain to a sympethetic Alma what happened.

At Ritas, Anthony is setting the table up. He suggests going to Greece with Rita given that he was looking at the cheap holiday prices in the travel agents. Anthony gets a call on his mobile and unsurprisingly, it's Amanda. She says that her mother has come down in the nursing home. Anthony says that she was fine when he left earlier and refuses to go and see her. Rita reluctantly says that he should go and that they will have the dinner tomorrow.

In the Rovers, Tyrone and Maria are hoping that Danny has fixed the work surface at the Duckworths. Dev and Geena suggest that Mike and Linda should come round theirs and have something to eat. Dev says he can cook well. Mike comes in and heads for Blanche sat at a table nearby. He apologises to her for the incident in the morning. She complains about the kids in the pub. Mike asks Blanche about Susan. Although Blanche doesn't know about Susan's son she does tell Mike that she is an accountant and that Susan lives in their old grandmothers house in Glasgow. Mike likes what he hears and buys Blanche a drink.

In the caf, Alma, Roy and Hayley sit worried. Roy suggests that it will be Monday before they hear anything. There is an ominous knock on the door. It is Peter from the fostering panel. He says that Robert is fine and then gives the jubilant Roy and Hayley the news they have been waiting for - he has it in writing that the couple can adopt a child!!

A nice episode. I believe Roy and Hayley's troubles are just starting and I would put money on them being lumbered with a demonic child from hell..

Johnny Briggs gave another good performance as Mike though I am still finding it harder and harder to picture him and Bill Roache having another slugfest!

Looks like it's the beginning of the end for Danny..

That's your lot for tonight folks! See you next Friday!

Sunday 28 January

Good evening. Any typos tonight are alcohol induced as I have been enjoying some red wine and this encouraged me to sleep through Blankety Blank - a subtle improvement over watching the programme! Anyway the main element in the Street tonight was the development of Mike's search for his new son Adam.

So can someone with a better memory than mine confirm precisely what was indicated 13 years ago concerning Susan's "abortion" - did she simply say and vanish immediately or was there more to it than that?

Anyway tonight's confection is sponsored by Cadbury's Crunchie (That Friday Feeling), although events are alleged to take place on Saturday, and as ever thanks to ITV Television.

Written by Nick Doughty, Directed by Noreen Kershaw

Mike is packing his bags. He wants to sort out some deals at a surprise trade fair in Glasgow - 7 am. Linda cannot go with him - she has to look after the Rovers - and she cannot be away at weekends. Mike departs.

At Sally's Kev has come to collect the gurls for their Saturday with their real father. Danny is not a happy bunny. (Can someone help me out, Sal is away and Danny is not at work - so who is opening the failing shop?). Kev criticises Danny for not having the gurls ready. Kev and Danny exchange comments and Kev is unhappy.

In Roys Rolls Gail is congratulating the Croppers on the approval they have received as foster carers. Hayley wants to decorate the spare room. Roy is pleased - even if he does not show it. He just thinks it is all a little unreal - he thought they would be told they were unsuitable and he is not used to be accepted for things.

Tyrone and Maria hammer on Sal's door - they want Danny to fix the damaged worktop in the new kitchen and he agrees to come round (so who is opening the shop). Kev has taken the girls and after the pictures he will buy them a special treat - no need they say - and Rursie waves a 10 note which Danny has given them to buy their own treat, and it is not pocket money. Kev is unamused to say the least.

In the Rovers Vik and Steve are having a pint and being annoyed by a group of children. Apparently this new idea of the management is good news - lots of crisps and bottles of pop according to Geena. Vik has invited Karen around for the afternoon and would like Steve out of the way. He demurs pointing out he has a night shift and needs his sleep, and anyway Vik needs his sleep too as they are both on night shift (Eileen has called in sick). Vik thinks he might get *some* sleep this afternoon. Steve says he is staying in.

Geena welcomes Rita and Anthony arrives immediately behind with holiday brochures. She chides him over his departure last night and he apologises. Anthony would like to visit Venice and getting Rita serenaded on a gondola. Anthony reckons that if they get away completely Amanda can not interfere at all. Rita reckons that it would be a red rag to a bull and that she wants to make it as easy as possible - they should wait.

Danny sets to work on the new top but reckons that even with help he cannot finish before Jack and Vera return. Tyrone - who should be fairly handy with tools and his hands in light of his job offers to help but you get the feeling that it will be a hindrance. Danny is not happy.

Mike arrives outside a non-descript building (when did he get his licence back?). He walks up some stairs to the door and rings a bell labelled "Barlow". There is no immediate answer and he steps down and looks around. Mike returns to the bell and rings it again, still no response, so he returns and sits in his car.

Back at the Rovers Linda is telling Dev and Geena about Mike's departure for a "trade fair" and departs to get some cigarettes (how is it that the Rovers does not sell them - I did not understand this exit). Dev goes very quiet. Dev has to tell Geena what has happened - and he has suddenly realised that he will have some explaining to do with Deirdre when she returns.

On the other side of the Rovers the threesome of Vik, Karen and Steve depart back to the flat above StreetCars.

Back at Roys Rolls Hayley suggests they enjoy a drink together tonight in the Rovers and Kev also congratulates as he is buying the gurls tea and cakes. The gurls ask what Roy and Hayley are going to do as foster parents and it is explained that they will look after children who have lost their parents - perhaps through divorce asks Rursie? Well maybe. Rursie's parents are divorced but they do not need foster parents. Indeed as Surphie makes clear they have two Daddies now - Kev and Danny, as Rursie explains. Kev tries to point out that he is their Daddy not Danny.

Danny is still struggling with Jack and Vera's worktop - it is too long and needs trimming.

Vik is with Karen in the flat and looks like he is making some progress with a snog when Steve starts watching. Vik has to find Steve a pillow. Karen wishes Steve "Sweet Dreams" which annoys Vik but they start snogging again.

Mike is still sitting in his car. He sees a woman leave the building and asks after Susan. The woman asks if mike is her father - no but he needs to see her. The neighbour explains that Susan spends Saturday afternoons watching her son play football.

Back in the Street Tyrone sees a taxi arriving and is pleased when he realises that Jack and Vera are not in it! Sally gets out of the taxi to be greeted by Kev and the gurls who have returned. Sally explains her absence and Kev complains that he should have been looking after the gurls. Kev cannot understand why she preferred to leave the children with Danny rather than him. She and Mr Wonderful (Danny) cannot cut Kev out of the gurls lives.

The next taxi to arrive is Jack and Vera. She bewails the lack of sunshine - but Jack promises her the best cup of tea in three weeks. Inside Danny has finished and packs up - but leaves a big screwdriver on the side. Tyrone sees him out the back and Maria greets the holidayers who observe that they have not burned down the house. Tyrone returns to a warm greeting but he looks round and spots the screwdriver. he puts the kettle on and hides the screwdriver in his waistband. Vera sees the kitchen and notes that she has yet to enjoy it. Sotto voce Jack observes that he wishes he could say the same about her cooking. Vera asks if the young couple have been up to any hanky-panky. Maria says no - they have been watching television mostly. Jack notes the "mostly" very quietly.

Danny returns home to find Sally has returned. Sally gives him Kev's side of the story. Danny has a return poke at Kev being difficult. Danny and Sally row over the kids being used as a weapon in the war. Voices are raised and Danny is not happy (again - our happy go lucky cheeky market chappy as was seems to have a deeper darker Greg like persona appearing - is Sally always attracted to the wrong sort - ie those with short contracts?).

Hayley and Roy are discussing the future and the prospects. Rita congratulates them - "Children are the greatest blessing - even if they do break your hearts sometimes". Hayley assures Roy that no-one is going to break their hearts.

Geena and Dev are still discussing events. Geena feels Dev has put her in a difficult position and almost lets slip about past indiscretions. Linda returns and quizzes them. Dev explains it is family business. Linda cannot raise Mike - his mobile is off.

Kev returns the gurls. Danny is out at the Rovers and Sally confirms that she has rowed with Danny over Kev's comments. Kev turns to go but Sally stops him - the gurls have enjoyed their day with him. Wearily Kev again observes "how did we get to this Sal?" and departs.

Mike sees a car arrive and walks towards it. He says "Hallo Susan" and Adam asks "Who are you?". Cue the title credits.

Will Deirdre and Ken ever see Susan and Adam again - remember her threat?

Will Dev ever get Deirdre to accept his apology? (Never mind that she wanted Mike to know)?

Did Vik get his leg over?

Will Steve ever find another piece of rich crumpet?

And will Jack and Vera ever find out about the deception?

See you all next week. -- K Richard Whitbread

Monday 29 January

Susan and Adam go up to the flat with Mike following behind. She refuses to let him in. She refuses to tell Adam who is. She rings Peter and blames him.

Danny urges Sally to move. Sally tells him that moving is not going to stop Kevin behind the girls' father. Reluctantly she agrees.

Susan eventually talks to Mike. He wants an explanation. She agrees to talk in his car.

Roy and Hayley are very excited. Rita tells them fostering is harder than having kids of your own. She describes it as being thrown into the deep end, having not had time to get to know them.

Peter goes round to Blanche trying to contact his father. She tells him to say he is in London.

Susan wants to know how Mike found out. She says she changed her mind about the abortion. She took the opportunity to start a new life. She just wanted to get rid of him, and not the baby.

Kids are causing a nuisance in the bar. Betty says Mrs Walker would never have permitted it. Fred says they are trying to create a family atmosphere.

Mike says he is not leaving until he sees his son. Susan wants him to go home, but Mike is adamant that the will stay. Susan thinks about it and suggests he comes back tomorrow.

Ken and Deidre return home. They are greeted by Blanche who tells Ken that Peter is looking for him.

The next day (?) Mike arrives, but Adam has gone out for the day with friends. Susan questions him as to whether Linda knows. He says they haven't had a chance to talk. They argue about when they were married. He is more upset that she took his child away from him.

Peter comes round to Ken and Deidre and says that Susan has told him that Mike was banging on her door. Peter wants to know how Baldwin could have found out.

Sally tries to smooth things over with Kevin. But when she confirms the girls will stay with Danny he is annoyed.

Linda is shocked when she finds out Roy and Hayley are going to be foster parents.

Deidre confesses she told Dev about Susan. Ken and Peter are annoyed.

Susan shows Mike some baby photos of Adam. He says he would liked to have helped in his upbringing.

Deidre confronts Dev. He says they both agreed he had the right to know. Deidre apologises to Ken and Peter. Blanche says she told Mike where Susan lives. Mike says he now wants to be part of Adam's life. Susan is adamant that she is going to decide what is best for Adam. She agrees to let him see Adam, but when things have calmed down and she has had time to think.

Wednesday 31 January

Linda asks Mike about the Trade Fair but he's not very forthcoming, unlike usual. She normally can't shut him up when he's been to one of these events, but he's been very quiet since coming back. She thinks something is up. He tries to divert her by asking if they should keep allowing kids in the pub. No, she's sick of them. And did he meet anyone she knew?

Morning chaos in Eileen's household. Dennis offers to cook a curry for tea.

Jack and Vera are off to their first day's work since the holiday. Vera wishes that they really were retired, like they told everyone on the cruise. It's alright for Jack, he just stands around all day and then goes to the pub. She doesn't know how he can tell when he's on holiday. You're in a better mood, he mutters.

Sam is fixing his pushbike in the garage. Dennis thinks he should have a motor, but Sam can't afford it. Maybe he'll start stripping again.

Over at the Barlow's, Blanche is giving Ken and Deirdre a hard time about keeping the Adam story from her. If she'd known, she wouldn't have told Mike that Susan was in Glasgow. Ken is worried about the damage Mike has done. Deirdre apologises again and says she'll have words with Dev. Ken will too, but he wouldn't blame Susan now if she made good her threat. Deirdre goes for the attack and suggests that Susan should bear some of the blame, she kept the secret all this time. Ken only thinks she was right because of his feelings for Mike. Other people might see it differently. But Ken thinks she told Dev on purpose because she knew he'd tell Mike, and that's what she wanted. Blanche is now glad she didn't know, because this time she can't get the blame. No, that's all squarely on Deirdre's shoulders.

Mike and Linda are now in the pub. He's talking to Duggie and she's confiding to Geena that she doesn't think Mike was at a Trade Fair after all. Duggie has called a meeting but Fred can't attend as he's at the abattoir. Linda joins them. Letting kids in, do they want to continue? No, says Linda, they're a flaming nuisance. Mike is concerned, does she mean all kids. Yes, when they're in here. Duggie sets the scene: there's been an increase in soft drink sales, but a number of complaints and a decrease in beer sales. That's because the serious drinkers are keeping away, says Linda. The motion to stop kids is carried unanimously.

Ken goes to the shop and has a go at Dev. Deirdre told him about Adam in confidence. He tries to shame Dev for revealing the secret. But Dev says he'll think and say what he wants and as for telling anyone else, he'll do as his conscience dictates.

Rita and Anthony are having lunch in the pub when Amanda arrives. The hospital have called to say that Isabel isn't well and they'll be getting the doctor to see her. Anthony clearly wants to go and Rita encourages him. (Is Amanda going to win this one?)

Hayley rushes into the café on her lunch break. No, there's been no news from the adoption people. She's very anxious, maybe Roy missed the phone because he was so busy? No, she's just being silly and goes back to work.

Deirdre goes to have a go at Dev. He knew she didn't want Mike to know. He explains it wasn't planned but Ken has no right to tell him what not to say. Deirdre thinks Ken is right on this one. She told Dev in confidence as she thought they were friends. She can't work for him after this. Dev looks genuinely upset that she's resigned.

Interval

Sam carries Vera's shopping home, where they bump into Jack. He never did that for her, even when he was young. It was considered soft. The bags get mixed up and she finds Sam's thong. Yes, he's going back to stripping and has bought a new costume. (Didn't he keep his other one then?) Vera thinks it makes Jack feel inadequate. No, just cold. When Sam leaves, she tells Jack he should be glad she's still interested. Plenty of people her age have forgotten what it's about. Jack is waiting for the day Vera forgets.

Blanche comforts Deirdre: it wasn't much of a job anyway! But Ken knows it meant a lot to her and commiserates. Peter arrives, Susan doesn't want to speak to Ken but is coming down on Friday. Ken asks what Mike wants. He's determined that Susan tells Adam he's his dad. Ken sees a glimmer of hope here, if Adam doesn't know yet, they can still do something.

Anthony arrives at Rita's, surprise, surprise, there was nothing wrong with Isabel. (Why didn't he phone first? He's far too trusting of his obnoxious daughter). It's an awful thing to say about your daughter, but she lied to me. He can't understand what she's doing. (He must be the only one. Rita obviously does, but she wants him to work it out for himself. Don't hold your breath Rita).

Now it's Mike's turn to speak to Dev. He's beaming. He saw Adam and wants to do something in return. Get the Barlow's off my back, suggests Dev. Oh, don't worry about Ken, he's a joke. You found me my son and I'm very very grateful.

Duggie rushes into the café for a late tea. Hayley arrives but there's still no news. Duggie tells them about the revised Rovers policy. No more kids, who'd have em?

Amanda arrives at Rita's, where Anthony has called her. She admits she was lying, she can't stand thinking of him with Rita, it's a betrayal of his marriage. Anthony tries to explain that Isabel doesn't know that, she doesn't even recognise him. Doesn't that mean she needs you more? Anthony thinks it may be more than he can give. Rita suggests that her father needs some care too, but Amanda isn't interested in her opinion. She accuses Anthony of deserting Isabel and leaves. He's clearly hurt.

Dennis is making the curry when Jason starts drinking a lager. Dennis tells him that he knows Eileen doesn't allow that and therefore he has to stop him. Eileen arrives and Dennis grabs the can just in time, making out it was his.

Ken turns up at the factory where Mike is working late. He tries to get him to agree that the most important thing is what's best for Adam. He's happy where he is and has grown up only knowing Susan. Why don't they both keep out of his life? Mike can spot a difference though: Ken has already met him.

The curry is over and the Witch of Weatherfield, all-knowing Eileen, thanks Dennis for covering up for Jason. She knows he doesn't drink that kind of lager and assures him it will get better with the lads.

Why didn't Ken tell Mike about Adam? Ken gives some wishy-washy answer. Mike says that Ken's family have conspired to make him lose 12 years with Adam. But now, they're going to be father and son and no-one can stop him.
