Friday 1 December

Coronation Street is sponsored by Cadbury the Nations favourite.

We kick off with Andy serving tea to Liz as they get ready to go to the court hearing. Liz gets a bit emotional about it.

Vera visits Terry in hospital to see if he is alright. Terry's ex girlfriend asks him to see Paul before he goes for his operation but Terry is reluctant to do this. In the end he decides to see Paul before he goes in for his operation.

Gina went out with Dev (It looks like there might be another wedding in the street). Dev asks Gina out again, Gina suggests they have a game of squash.

Jim waits impatiently in prison waiting to go to court. John (the solicitor) reassures Jim that the sentence will be lenient.

Jack visits Terry, Terry demands £25,000 if he is to give his kidney to Paul and Jack agrees he walks away and makes his way to the bank. What Vera does not know is Terry is pulling the wool over her eyes (well she'll soon find out). Vera thinks Terry is the most wonderful son she has, what she doesn't know is that Jack is about to hand over £25,000 to him.

Bloach arrives at the court and starts gossiping about Gerald to his mother. Jim arrives at court and the hearing begins. Jim is asked by the judge "do you plead guilty or not guilty" Jim replies "GUILTY".

Interval - I'll just go and check my train times to London, seems as though there's that many delays these days.

Vera plods along to say good bye to Terry before he goes in for his operation and is met by an empty bed, she wonders to her self where Terry is. She then finds Terry getting in a taxi, she shouts over and he replies "I'm sorry mam, I can't go through with it. (It looks like Terry's done a runner with the money yet again).

Natalie tries to talk to Gerald's mum, Gerald's mum gives her a mouthful. Everyone waits impatiently to hear what Jim will be sentenced to.

Jack reveals to Vera that Terry had no intention to go through with it and also states that he handed over £25,000 for him to do the job, Vera is even more distraught now then she was before.

Jim is sentenced to eight years in prison, Liz gets very upset as Gerald's mum starts screaming "eight years is that all he's getting, he should get life imprisonment.

That's all for this week, back next week for the next update.

Saturday 2 December

Andy talks to Toyah about Jim's sentence - the worst of all wedding presents. He will have to serve at least four years. They don't know where he will be sent.

Liz says to Steve an appeal will take ages. Andy tells Liz that she won't be able to see Jim as much.

Toyah tells Natalie that Jim won't be out for at least four years.

Dev wants to take Gina off to a game of squash at lunchtime. Natalie says no because there will be no lunchtime cover, however Toyah offers to cover.

Jim is going to search for Terry. He wants to see him face to face. Maria will stay with Vera, while Tyrone goes with Jack.

Deidre tells Ken that a day in prison is awful. Ken says it was bad for her because she was innocent. Deidre says so was Jim. Ken and Dev say he did kill a man, but Deidre claims it was in self defence.

Vera tells Emma about how Terry ran off with the money. She doesn't think there is much they can do as there was no contract. She offers to ask around.

Ken asks Toyah if anyone has asked her to sign the petition to save the cobblestones. Toyah surprised he can think of that when Jim is in prison.

Douggie thinks Jim is lucky to serve only 4 of 8 of his sentence. After all he killed a man.

Liz sees Jim in prison. She thinks he can appeal. He tells her that she can try if she wants, but he is not bothered. Jim says that their marriage should be annulled, and that she is a free woman. Four years is a long time to wait to be together. Liz asks if it is what he really wants. He wants to be with her but in reality it isn't going to be. He can only see her once a month. She says other people manage that way. Don't worry about consumating she tells him, they did loads of it last time round!

Jack turns up on Terry's doorstep. Jack wants to know how he can betray his own son. Terry says he could be anybody, and doesn't recognise him as his son. Terry said he was scared of going to the operating theatre. There could be complications all for someone he doesn't really know. He didn't do it because he couldn't.

Roy says to Ken they are not making much progress with their petition about the cobblestones. Ken says he has mentioned it to their newspaper. They are going to put him in touch with someone who could arrange preservation order on the cobblestones.

Douggie tells Fred that he has a new council contract, but he is £75,000 short of fulfilling it. He wonders if Fred would like to invest. He is not interested.

Terry tells Jack that even if he came back he would be frightened when he got to the hospital again. Then Jack asks about the money. Terry says he has used it to pay off some debts. Terry thinks he earnt it, but Jack thinks he stole it. Jack tells him that he makes him sick. Terry says he ought to take Tyrone as his adopted son and forget him.

Liz tells Deidre that she hopes she talked Jim out of immediate divorce. She is determined that it should go ahead. They plan to go out for a drink.

Emma goes back to Vera. She says to do it legally it would be very difficult to get the money back. Offering money to donate an organ is a very serious offence. Andrea calls round to see if she has heard anything from Terry. Vera says she has no idea why he left. Emma asks if they are still looking for donor, she says that it has to be a perfect match.

Dev invites Gina out for a meal. Douggie asks Dev if he would like to be a backer for his contract. He reminds Dev of the windfall he made selling his house. Dev says he and his solictor would want to see a contract before agreeing anything.

Jack and Tyrone return. He says Terry won't do it. Andrea about to leave in tears. Then Vera offers to be a donor again.

Sunday 3 December

8 consecutive episodes - it has been a long old week. And Jim got 8 years as a result - a bit harsh - his acting was rarely that bad. Near normality this week until Friday then the first episode is networked for the first time ever I believe and that is then followed by an hour long live episode at 8pm. According to the reports Vera has it easy - comatose throughout.

Anyway tonight events in Weatherfield are courtesy of the copyright holders ITV Television, sponsored by Cadburys.

Written by Mariam Vossough, directed by Graham Wetherell

At the corner shop a somewhat hung over Dev arrives and asks Dreary to keep the noise down. Geena took him clubbing and he asks Dreary to stay on. Later Duggie arrives at the shop and asks if Dev is ready to complete the advance. Dev does not feel particularly co-operative and Duggie feels he is going to lose the deal.

Vera is wanted at the hospital asap. Jack tries to talk her out of it - but she has made her mind up. Tyrone and Jack are both unhappy with the idea of her giving up a kidney. Vera is quietly determined and goes to pack.

Andy is also packed and off back to Barcelona. Liz is still unhappy with the sentence but she is staying put, even though she can only see him once a month.

The Doctor and the Teacher are moving into Natalie's old house and are moving themselves (as if on their joint salaries). The Doctor is an escapee from the Bill (which needs putting out of its misery) but the Teacher I don't recognise. They are welcomed by Gail who threatens them with Candice and Sarah but their help is declined.

Max congratulates Natalie on the baby news. Andy wanders into the Rovers and has arrived to say goodbye to Toyah. She is jealous and it looks as though she might follow him to Barcelona. Dreary arrives for a white wine and Natalie asks if Dev is as badly off as Geena who has hardly worked all morning. Geena is smitten but then Natalie is probably jealous. AS Max and Ashley leave they run into Charlie (she the female teacher) and Matt (the male doctor) who are unloading their van. Ashley lends a hand but Charlie is not terribly keen. Anyway Max goes off to brew up and Ashley carries on helping move the furniture.

Ken, Emily and Blanche are arranging a meeting to defend the cobbles, although support is thin on the ground at the moment. Steve is going to run Andy to the station. Andy tells him to go but Steve has decided that he is going to make a go of Streetcars - no more playing gangsters is Andy's advice - no worry says Steve - he has learnt his lesson.

Tyrone and Jack discuss the operation. Tyrone would be unhappy if anything happened to Vera. Vera asks Tyrone to take her to the hospital. Jack says he would like her to rethink but he cannot have Paul's death on her conscience. Jack accompanies her to the hospital - he cannot let her go through it on her own.

At the hospital the consultant says that there are further tests and monitoring to ensure that Vera is suitable. The operation cannot happen before Wednesday. Vera signs the consent form. Later she visits Paul's bedside and talks to mother and grandmother. The mother breaks down in tears and wishes she had kept in touch with Vera.

Andy wishes Liz farewell and asks her to keep Steve out of trouble. Steve and Andy depart. Liz is on her own. Later Dreary pops round for a cuppa. Dreary tells her that a letter is important - she knows only too well. Liz is afraid that she will fall apart when she does see him. Liz is worried about how Jim will cope.

Charlie is congratulated on her taste by Ashley as they start unpacking. All four depart to the pub for a quick drink although Charlie seems quite unsociable. Over at the Rovers Ash is kissed by a very happy Max who vanishes to the ladies. Blanche is at the bar and quickly establishes that Mr Ramsden is a doctor and the Mrs Ramsden is a teacher. They are only moving into the area to reduce travelling costs, not to become part of the community. Blanche corners Matt, although Charlie manages to slip away and joins Ash and Max. Ashley goes to the bar to rescue Matt. Max confides in Charlie - she thought she was pregnant but in fact she isn't. Charlie points out to Ash that Max is not feeling well and he takes her home. Charlie does not tell Matt the real reason. Charlie looks unhappy at the prospect of the neighbours.

Liz wanders into the Rovers and asks if she can restart work. Natalie says tomorrow and they agree. Geena greets Dev - they have not seen each other since 5:30 that morning. Dev is on the mineral water. Duggie arrives and plagues Dev. Dev wants to see the business plan and Duggie promises the earth - but the strain is showing on his face.

Vera is being visited by Jack and Tyrone - they both look more unhappy than her. Jack apologises for losing his temper earlier - but he is frightened. Anyway as Vera points out she is a fighter. Jack tries to express his feelings for Vera - she will be chasing him around the bookies for a few years yet. Jack kisses Vera and then departs.

Great acting from Jack especially tonight. And Max went from the very happy "pregnant" woman to the deeply unhappy and worried woman - a vast swing from one of those who got written off in her earlier days.

And what is wrong with Charlie - she looks like she has swallowed a wasp - if she didn't want to move locally why are they there? Can she smile?

By next week the Street will be 40 years old. So can I just wish it happy birthday? And thank you ITV.

Monday 4 December

Ken receives a letter from the council and they have brought forward the date to discuss the cobblestones. Ken is obviously furious.

Ashley is concerend over Maxine's health after not being well last night. He suggests she goes to the doctor. She thinks it is a good idea.

Curly and Emma are discussing honeymoon destinations.

Ken goes round to Roy to discuss the council meeting. They are going to call an emergency meeting.

Vera, in hospital, looking at photos of Paul in his early childhood. The doctor offers Vera extra counselling sessions, but she just wants to get on with it.

Tyrone loses his temper with Roy when he suggests that he is extra busy becuase Vera is away. He emphasises that she is in hospital. Curly goes round to the garage and tries to calm him down.

Maxine in the Kabin is looking for a magazine. Norris offers to help, she says she wants a magazine about pregnancy.

Ken asks Maxine if she is coming to the meeting. She says she threw the council letter away.

Maxine tells Ashley that she thought she was pregnant yesterday. He is upset that she didn't tell him before.

Emma gets a call from the travel agent. It seems there are no flights available for the honeymoon.

Ken asks Toyah to check with Natalie that it is ok to hold the residents meeting in the pub.

Les says there is no point to the meeting, it is a load of old stones.

Curly comes into the hospital with flowers for Vera. She said she was not worried until they put a tube up her leg. She says if he thinks Tyrone is worried, Jack is worse. Curly tells her there is nothing to worry about.

Matt the doctor meets Maxine in the cafe and asks if she is ok. He offers to chat to her for a bit, but when he realises what the problem is, he says he would rather discuss it in the surgery.

Douggie and Dev agree terms for the contract. Dev says he is too busy to come to the meeting. Ken thinks Deidre is more annoyed that Dev was.

Roy goes round to the garage to talk to Tyrone. She tells Roy that they can discuss the home visit while getting ready for the meeting. He says he can't, so Hayley tells him to let him know when he is available.

Emma winds Curly up about the honeymoon. She tells him they are going potholing. He falls for it.

Maxine discusses with Ashley they have to be careful with their diet if she wants to get pregnant. That includes alcohol. She tells him they are now tee-total.

Charlie and Matt come to the Rovers. They realise there is a meeting. Matt thinks they ought to get involved, but Charlie thinks they ought not.

Ken chairs the meeting. They think the cobblestones are being removed so that the road will quicker for councillors to get home quicker. Various suggestions including a t-shirt with SOC (save our cobblestones) or SOS (save our street).

Doctor sees Vera that everything is ok for the operation. Vera has prepared a note of what she wants to happen if anything goes wrong. Jack doesn't want to take it. Jack is crying with worry.

Wednesday 6 December

We see the street with bollards along the kerbs. Norris accosts Les that the council are starting early, but he denies knowledge (easily believed). Les asks Curly to move his car, but he refuses. Janice tells Les he's showing them up, and he reminds her not to let on.

Curly calls in at the Duckworths to send his best to Vera. The op is at 1pm. Jack says she'll be telling them all off by tonight.

The Claytons are round Vera's bed, thanking her. She thinks seeing Paul is thanks enough, but he has to look after her kidney.

Duggie brings a bag into the caff and reveals a load of sweatshirts with their slogan, Save Our Street (poor in my opinion). Ken is suspicious but he's done them for free. He grew up round here and think they should preserve their heritage.

A stranger arrives in the Rovers looking for the landlady. Toyah asks Janice about the cones, but she claims not to know anything. Audrey thinks that everyone will blame her. But if it's what her constituents want, she can bring it up at the next planning meeting....in 3 weeks time. Janice whispers the truth to Toyah, but she mustn't tell anyone how she heard, Les could lose his job.

Emily is at Ken's, they're wondering how to get a preservation order on the street. Toyah brings them the news.

The stranger turns out to be Max Dale, a freelance consultant from the brewery. He can give her advice on advertising and staff training. All for free.

Ken makes an announcement in the Rovers. Audrey didn't know. Ken makes a rousing speech. It's their street, they should decide what happens to it, they should get out there and stop people vandalising their community. Hoorah! But Norris will have a sandwich first and Blanche wants a vodka.

Jack will be waiting for Vera when she gets back. She wants him to have some dinner. She's wheeled out and he looks distraught and lost.

Interval

Nat is listing her staff. She comes to Betty and reveals her age. (This seems to be a sticking point but nothing further comes of it).

Back in the Rovers, Audrey has to go but is worried about being attacked. She's looking forward to seeing Prince Charles tomorrow. Duggie arrives and asks for an update. He hands out the sweatshirts.

Roy and Hayley are waiting for Toyah, she's going to cover while they have their next interview. Roy is nervous, they'll be asking personal questions this time.

Jack and Tyrone are waiting. The Claytons arrive on their way for some fresh air. Paul has just gone to theatre.

The interviewer is asking Roy and Hayley what they thought of each other the first time they met. Hayley starts. She thought Roy looked like a very nice man, even though he kept his money in a purse and needed a haircut. (I'd just had one!). And she thought there was more to him than met the eye. He stood up to Mr. Baldwin and kept his dignity while Audrey and Alma had a dig at him. She starts talking about their first kiss but Roy stops her.

Roy confesses to being terrified of Hayley. Not because of her per se, but because he had little experience of women. How long before you knew Hayley was a transexual? 3 weeks. And what did you think? It explained why she was going out with him, she was more of a misfit than he was.

The Team have finally made it out of the Rovers and are discussing tactics. They're going to form a line across the street. Norris arrives with a chair. Fred has had to leave to attend a meat defrosting crisis. Blanche says if they want to tarmac anything, they can start with her (I'd pay good money to see that).

A van arrives and they launch themselves in front of it. It stops just in time. The driver is in charge. I've got a docket here that says this will be tarmacced and that's what I'm going to do. He tries to move Blanche on and then gets on his mobile.

Back at the interview, Roy explains he was worried what people would say. Some were quite nasty but most accepted them. Now they see Hayley as a woman. And how do you see her? Mostly, she's just Hayley, but if I'm honest, I don't see her as a woman. I see her as someone very special and different. How do you see Roy? Oh, he's lovely and kind and...honest (said rather flustered).

A nurse arrives. The operation has gone well. Vera is still unconscious, but Jack can sit with her. She's all hooked up to machines. Tyrone looks through the window of the room. Paul is still in theatre.

The interview is over. Toyah leaves and Roy wants to join the Team. Hayley decides to stay and clear up in the café. She's clearly upset but has her back to Roy. She agrees that the interviewer was easy to talk to. Said sarcastically but Roy misses it.

Vera's machine starts bleeping and Jack is sent out.

It's late on the street. The workers are going to leave but will be back tomorrow. It they're still there, he'll call the police. They say they have a right to be here. He replies, I'm sorry, but you don't (eh?) Ken rouses his troops and reminds them they need to be there early in the morning.

Vera is having problems breathing and they give her an oxygen mask. The nurse comes out to tell Jack she's had an allergic reaction and the doctor has given her something for it. Jack and Tryone peer through the window, looking worried.

Friday 8 December
Sunday 10 December

Well it all happened on Friday night in the hour long live episode. A few verbal fluffs but obvious increasing confidence amongst the participants as the hour progressed. They must all have worked extremely hard and they deserve congratulations from all viewers. I was disappointed about Hayley leaving Roy - I felt that she has hardly given Roy a fair chance to explain his statement, although his lack of sympathy to her wishes over adoption have been hard to understand. Vera looked as though she was going to corpse at one point - although in a coma she had the widest smile of anyone.

And so on to Sunday night. All the following details are courtesy of ITV Television who are the copyright holders and Cadbury's Roses who kindly sponsor the Street.

Written by Phil Ford, directed by Colin Cant

We open at Roy's Rolls where Fred is brought up to date on the actual nature of their success by Duggie. Roy is obviously deeply troubled but no-one knows why. Duggie reveals the duplicitous nature of the paperwork provided to the council the previous evening. Roy is re- reading Hayley's letter.

Round at Audrey's Alma is providing Hayley with some tea and asking if Hayley wants to talk about her problems. Hayley could always rely on Roy to tell the truth but when she finally heard the answer to the one question which worried her she found she could not handle the truth. Alma is sure that Roy would not want to hurt her - but he has.

Over in the back room of the Rovers they have heard that Vera is recovering. Natalie has an announcement - she is selling, she has had an offer and accepted. She is selling to the "Boozy" chain. Toyah is instantly worried about where she will live. Betty is worried about her job - as Betty states the "Boozies" sound a right bunch. Betty is deeply unhappy. Natalie admits that one of the reasons for selling is the baby - but she needs a new start away from the Street and the time has come to go.

Along at the Barlows Peter is sleeping on the sofa watched over by Dreary and Blanche. Neither are taking to the visitor. Ken comes downstairs and is quizzed about the Peter's length of stay. Until Christmas it seems. Peter has lost his wife Jessica along the way. Peter wakes and apologises for oversleeping. The wonderful Blanche having been critical offers to make a cup of tea. Peter apologises to Ken for his attitude the previous evening.

Les is scrubbing the cobbles (although why is not apparent). Janice arrives carrying a mug which he assumes is his. She merely drinks it whilst watching him work - after all she might not get another chance. Les points out that this is all her fault - the cobbles would be tarmacced if she did not have a gob like a foundry oven. She thanks him for the compliment. Les reckons it is worse than scrubbing off the graffiti. The passing doctor is hailed by Les - this is no job for a man with a back condition is it? The doctor responds - Have you got a back condition then? Janice makes it all clear - Too right she says - he is completely spineless. General jollity!!

Behind the Rovers bar Betty reckons that the other two - Liz and Toyah (no sign of Geena) will have no problem with the Boozies - they will either be kept on or get other jobs - Betty is too old. Toyah is worried about where she will live. Natalie enters at the rear to overhear them discussing her decision and saying that they believe the baby could be brought up in the pub. Natalie explains her need to leave Weatherfield. Betty wishes her well but is unhappy that there was no consideration of the employees. Natalie says that the decision is made and in a few weeks the Rovers Return will become the "Boozy Newt". Natalie asks for the confidence to be kept until the deal is signed and sealed.

Lunchtime at Roy's Rolls Duggie and Ken are discussing the events. Duggie reveals that he has told Fred, I say he has told Fred. Les comes in and demands service from Roy. Did Roy see the programme on the tv the other evening? It was about some very deep sea creatures and one of these could change from being a "he sea creature" to a "she sea creature" - in every respect - just like your Hayley. Roy responds (rightly) by ordering Les out and Toyah who has just come in tells him to leave as well. Les tells Roy to get a sense of humour.

At the hospital Vera wakes to find Jack by her bedside. He has had little sleep. Vera asks what happened - an allergic reaction. She sends him home for a rest. But he stays and she goes back to sleep.

Roy closes the cafe just before lunchtime and Toyah asks what is wrong - where is Hayley. Roy tells Toyah that she has gone. Roy tries to explain that they are different from other couples. Roy dislikes the constant questioning. But Roy could not lie - he could not say what she wanted to hear, yes he loves her. He does not know where she is and he does not think she is coming back.

Commentary - has Hayley really outgrown Roy? I don't think so. My wife thinks so. I think he has to see her as more than a woman out of respect for her history and experience. Both of them are not only lovers but also friends - they will come back together.

And after the break

Alma suggests that Hayley should talk to Roy - sitting there is not going to solve the problem. Hayley feels that despite her external appearance and the way she always felt internally perhaps she can never be a woman and Roy's statement is the proof of that. Alma says it is not true - Hayley needs time to sort things out.

Lunch at the Barlows is getting extreme praise from Peter in relation to the food supplied in the navy. Ken is left to talk to Peter. Peter is unhappy at being a sardine and sometimes your wife leaves you. At the moment he is not sure which way he is going. Ken admits that staying in touch with Peter and Susan has not been easy.

Betty asks Liz about the Boozy chain and Liz describes the Boozy Bug, Boozy Ferret, the Boozy Bishop, the latter was themed with dog collars on the men and the women looking like tarts. Betty reckons she will fit in just nicely (not). Fred demands refreshment and Betty is fairly offhand as he asks for a whisky and threat - but could she not look at it as she might just turn it sour before he drinks it!

On the other side of the bar Audrey and Emily stop Toyah and ask about Roy. Audrey reveals that Hayley is at her house with Alma. Audrey would like to know what is going on. Toyah cannot help.

Dev arrives and orders a pint, but Betty is offhand and Fred notes in the words of the Bard that "There is something rotten in the state of the Rovers Return". Toyah asks Natalie if she can use the phone and she goes out and lets Roy know where to find Hayley. Natalie asks Betty to cheer up - but gets a dusty response.

The flowers from the Rovers have arrived at Vera's bedside. She asks Jack if he opened and read the letter she left. He denies opening it and reading it and claims he threw it away unread when she was recovering (but we know better). Paul is getting better and she wants to see him. She should be on the way home in about a week.

Roy goes to Audrey's but Alma tells him that Hayley has gone out for a walk. Roy and Alma discuss the hurt which Hayley has suffered and Roy departs after telling Alma how much he is hurting because Hayley is not with him.

Back at the Rovers the real preservation order has arrived and Ken is showing it to Duggie - who says a little fraud does not pay? Now will anyone ever find out I wonder?

Geena is talking to Dev - she is glad the cobbles are staying - and he should as well as his shop stands next to a national treasure. Dev is more worried about his shock absorbers! Norris arrives and Betty remains offhand. She continues to be sharp and in response to a question she explains that Natalie is selling and it will soon be the Boozy Newt.

Alma tells Hayley on her return how much Roy loves her and how much he misses her - but as Hayley responds - is she simply the best he could get?

Fred tells Betty it is a disgrace - no sooner save one part of the local heritage than someone else destroys another part. Ken joins in but Natalie stands up to him. Betty attacks and Natalie tells her it is none of her business. Betty reckons it is her job at risk and she slams the pint down on the counter and departs.

As an episode not bad and great gag from Janice concerning the spineless Les - even if the setup was poor!

And of course the threat of the Boozies (which I just typed as the Bozoes, which somehow seems appropriate) will lead to another few changes in the Street.

And finally in the live episode the very wonderful Linda Baldwin (J Pirie) was wearing a rather attractive black and white coat and matching handbag. To satisfy the wife does anyone know the source of the clothing etc? She would rather like one similar!

Mike goes to talk to Peter. He offers to buy him a drink, but Peter refuses.

Dennis helps to turn the stopcock off, and then the social worker turns up. Roy says that Hayley has been delayed at work. He realises that Roy is lying, and Roy confesses the truth that she has left him.

The phone rings in the Platts. David gets to it first, and teases Sarah before handing over the phone.

Roy explains how he answered the questions the social worker asked truthfully, but that upset Hayley. The social worker says he can't continue with just the two of them, and that he should contact him again when he is sorted things out.

Duggie then drops the idea to Mike and Fred about buying the pub. He says they can't do any worse than the Boozy "flaming" Newt.

Deidre asks Liz if Peter apologised. She says sort of.

Duggie thinks they could be three equal partners. Fred thinks they could be local heroes making a stand. They all agree. They drink to the new owners of the Rovers.

Martin is angry with Sarah. He tells her she has be deceiving. She is tearful, and says how hard it is to be a mother. She wants to be normal. He thinks it was awful that she stood there denying that the baby was her daughter.

Sunday 17 December

Christmas countdown now in progress. Depending on timing next week many of you will not read the next update until after the break so can I wish all my readers a Happy Christmas and all the compliments of the season. No doubt the Street will be celebrating in style next week as well.

Anyway tonight's events in Weatherfield are courtesy of ITV Television Ltd and the support of Cadbury's Milk Tray which kindly sponsor those events.

Written by David Lane. Directed by Brian Mills

Sarah lets Martin in and asks him not to tell Gail about Glen. Not a chance. Martin and Gail start tearing into each other and Sarah departs for her room. Martin explains that Sarah lied. Neither knew she had a boyfriend.

Max and Ash have hangovers and Max is regretting it - she wants to be a parent and a good parent and she starts pouring away all the alcohol she can find - including a bottle of whisky costing 57 which is Uncle Fred's Xmas present. Ash just stops her in time. (What is the betting that the night of passion managed the trick. Anyway they are back on the wagon for now!)

Ken has tracked Dreary down at work - she had to get out of the house as Peter is leaving a mess in the living room and she wants to avoid the atmosphere - and she wants his house back to them and Blanche. Ken points out he has never said a word about Blanche and Deirdre admits he has been a saint. Sam is looking for a birthday present for Tyrone which is the centrepiece of this episode - it is his 18th. They send him to the Kabin. Dev overhears Ken and Deirdre discussing Peter.

Over at Roy's Rolls, Candice buys Sarah a drink and the two discuss the events and Glen. Sarah is not going to phone him - Candice would (!) - and if he does not phone her he is not worth it. I realise Sarah is a parent but I would have thought that given everything she would not be chasing the male sex that hard at present. And as Candice observes David's blackmailing days are over!

On the other side of the cafe, Tyrone and Maria are reading his birthday cards. First the lads at the garage and then Maria's. "Today's the day you become a MAN!!". And she gives him a rather nice watch. He kisses her.

Down at the Rovers, Natalie tells Liz (who is serving Linda) that she has to go and sign the legal papers and that Liz is needed for a second interview by the Boozies. Linda reckons that Liz is too old. Liz fights back and Linda calls her a right uppity cow to Mike as she sits down. Mike has decided that he is not going to buy the Rovers after all - but Linda is not going to take it lying down.

Down at the Kabin Dreary is reluctant to go home - Peter is there and is a stranger. After a few seconds Dev produces the keys for the flat upstairs and suggests that Peter might move in - it will improve security and make life easier at the Barlows. Deirdre has finally got the excuse she needs and gives Dev a huge bear hug. Duggie wanders in and observes this gives a new meaning to a staff get-together. Dreary goes to make some tea and Duggie tells Dev he has missed out on the Rovers deal - but he does not seem overly bothered.

Back at the Rovers there is a row along the bar - Sam, Dennis, Kevin, Tyrone, Maria and Curly. Tyrone asks for a pint - that will be lemonade then says Natalie - no beer says Tyrone. Not until you have bought the landlady a drink she responds. A new rule that Tyrone has never heard of! Anyway says Kev you can buy me one too - but you know how much I earn. I do says Kev and I also know that you will be earning another 25 a week from Monday because you are over 18!. Drinks all round then (Natalie as suits a pregnant woman stays on the tonic - a double). Tyrone also gets to buy Maria a drink for the first time. Tyrone is chuffed as mint balls as the saying goes. Sam bought some cigars - it was all he could find in the post office as he thought a postal order was not appropriate.

Duggie arrives and buys Linda's drinks as well as her own. She breaks the bad news - he is almost too late and Mike is bottling it. Tyrone finishes his pint in one (and not for the first time I bet). Duggie sits down with Fred, Mike and Linda. Fred and Mike are worried about finances. Duggie tells them not to worry about finances - and they point out he was nearly bankrupt only a few weeks ago. Duggie tells him to take the courageous route.

Back at the bar Curly observes how far Tyrone has come from the skip and Tyrone and Maria refuse a further drink when offered by Dennis - although he buys one for the rest of the group.

Over at the Platts Sarah is looking after Bethany when Gail returns. Gail tries to make it clear that she is unhappy with the lies Sarah told. Sarah explains she could not tell the truth because she is not trusted. Sarah thinks no boy will ever be interested in her again and ascends yet again to her bedroom.

Deirdre is telling Ken about the offer Dev has made and she asks Ken to talk to him. Unfortunately Peter overhears the end of the conversation and becomes aware that Dreary wants him out. Grudgingly he agrees to go and look at the flat but is aware of her hostility.

Ash and Max arrive at the pub and Fred buys them two orange juices. Not a health kick - permanent this time. Duggie and Dreary arrive at the same time.

In a booth Kev asks Curly how the wedding arrangements are going along - hardly progressing but Ash is doing sterling work as best man - it is Curly's busiest time of the year, something to do with Christmas approaching. Ash is not happy with his orange juice.

Duggie is still trying to talk Fred and Mike round - 25k each - hardly a fortune, the price of a new car - and it will earn them the title of the "Men who saved the Rovers". Duggie buys another round, or at least tries to but Liz is talking to Dreary. Liz reminds Dreary that Peter's unwelcome approaches seemed fairly edgy and she wishes that he was not staying in the area.

On the other side of the bar Linda and Geena are talking. Linda lets Geena in on the discussions the three wise men are having. Linda also suggests to Geena that perhaps she might like to be the manager - she can get anything she wants out of Mike if she asks in the right way.

At an Indian restaurant Tyrone is ordering a vindaloo and some red wine - which he wants properly chilled in one of those buckets. Maria asks about the skip and Tyrone explains that Jack, Vera, Monica and Maria have changed his life. Thinking about the cigars he decides that they will give them to Maria's father for Xmas as Tyrone is not going to smoke anymore. Anyway she says it is going to be a very special night for him. Later Tyrone and Maria have finished the meal and he asks if they want to go clubbing. No, she has one more present for him. Will he put on his coat, pay the bill and they can go.

Martin and Gail are discussing events in the Rovers. They agree to talk with less passion in the hope that the children will stop playing them off against each other. Gail also invites Martin to Christmas dinner but he cannot come - with the flat being so unattractive he volunteered for duty.

Curly asks after the sale - he is not looking forward to the noise and the low life the "Boozy Newt" will attract. Natalie says the deal is going through - it will be bring some life to the Street.

Over in the corner, Duggie is covering his eyes with his hand, Mike has a hand over one ear and Fred's hand is over his mouth. Linda takes one look and observes that they look just like an ornament her grandma had of three monkeys. Linda's point is that if they do nothing then in three month's time they will be sitting somewhere else saying "Shame about the Rovers isn't it?". Mike does not want to mix business and pleasure. Fred observes you are a long time dead. And Mike knows he has got to cough up or he will never hear the end of it.

Natalie takes the three wise men into the back room. She thinks they want to complain about the sale. Fred and mike stand in front of Duggie as she says that she has had an offer she cannot refuse. Duggie observes that she can refuse if she has a better one to accept. They are prepared to take the risk to keep the Rovers "for local folk". She wants to talk cash not hard sentiment.

Maria and Tyrone arrive at the Stooping Grange Hotel. She has booked a room for them to spend the night together - he will get what he really wants - her. The Manager asks for a registration form to be completed but they get in a muddle over the name in which it has been booked (Dobbs/Duckworth) and Tyrone cannot do it, its not right and he rushes out into the night. Maria apologises and rushes after him.

At the Rovers Liz tells Deirdre that unofficially she is looking at the new manager of the "Boozy Newt". Linda overhears and knowing that events are happening in the back room suggests that Deirdre should buy a bottle of champagne, or at least a bottle of fizzy wine to celebrate. Linda offers to buy it. Linda says there is no point in sour grapes and is happy to celebrate Liz's good fortune and all is forgiven. Natalie and the 3 wise men emerge from the back room. Natalie has an announcement to make. She would like all the regulars to have this opportunity to meet the new owners - subject to the usual contracts of course. General applause but Liz is unhappy and Linda gives her a broad smile, raising her eyebrows. Somehow it is not going to be plain sailing for Liz I think.

Monday 18 December

Temporary updater Vivienne Smith here for a few Mondays. Bouquets, brickbats or bars of chocolate (!) to vivienne.smith@virgin.net

This will just be a short update. First it is very late for technical reasons, second those technical reasons are that my video did not record any sound for this episode. With the aid of Mike Plowman's Visual Update, my attempts at remembering what I had watched, a bit of lip-reading and some calls to friends, I have tried to reconstruct what was going on!

This episode was written by Joe Turner and directed by Brian Mills.

The episode begins with Drear picking her way across the room in which Peter has slept on the sofa. She has a moan about the mess but Ken sticks up for his prodigal boy and says it will take a while for Peter to adjust to civilian life. Hmmm. I find this excessive slobbishness of Peter's a bit odd. One thing I have noticed about serving and retired servicemen is that they tend to be very tidy. Especially Navy men. They are used to living in a small space and having to consider their colleagues. I think it would take more than four days for Peter to "loosen up" to the point he has now reached.

Over at the House of Platt young David is tormenting his big sister (which is what young brothers seem to have been put on this earth for). How did you guess that your updater is the oldest of four with TWO younger brothers?? Poor Sarah is trying to have a telephone conversation with Glen, while pretending to speak to Candeeeeece. Bro inadvertently hits the nail on the head by annoying her with "I bet you're talking to a BOY". Gail, in an act that is a triumph of hope over experience, tries to keep the peace but may as well have saved her breath to cool her tea.

In Roy's Rolls Kevin's mechanics are preparing for a hard day in the inspection pit by enjoying egg, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, fried bread, mushroom, black pudding, potato cakes and beans with a side order of bread and butter and a pint of tea each. Yum yum! They'll be bursting out of their overalls a la Incredible Bulk, if they do that every morning. The subject under discussion is Tyrone's forthcoming 18th birthday and whether he should have a 'do'. Tyrone doesn't feel that a party quite the thing while Vera is still in hospital, but his amigos think that the transition to manhood is a rite of passage which should be mark with appropriate ceremony - in other words a piss-up!

Behind the counter, Roy's concentration lapses as he thinks of his absent Hayley and he cuts his finger; it is soon obvious that it isn't the first time today that he has done so. Toyah tries to carry on serving and act as first aider to Roy. Come on Roy! Pull yourself together! Get yourself organised! Those mechanics will be back in twenty minutes for three bacon butties, three sausage rolls, three teas and six buttered tea-cakes to take away for their elevenses (just to tide them over until their lunch).

Kevin has called into the cafe to round up his workforce and runs into Sally who asks him if he knows that Natalie has decided to sell the pub. He recognises that sour look on his ex's face and says that Sally must now be pleased that Natalie is pregnant and alone. (I don't know what Sally has got to be miserable about when she has the lovely Danny at home. Since I saw Richard Standing on Celebrity Stars in their Eyes I have thought he was gorgeous, if only they'd give the poor chap a storyline. Note to writers, standing in the shop saying "We're out of Mr Muscle" is NOT a storyline; well it is on Queer as Folk, but not on Coronation Street.)

Over at Underworld, Hayley is also in a dream (thinking about all that eleven-out-of-ten sex with Roy in his pinny, I suppose) and has muddled up the sugars etc when she made the girls their tea. She tells the Janice and Karen that she has left Roy and is staying with Alma and Audreh. " Well at least Audreh might do your hair for free" says Karen. LOL! No-one would be able to tell the difference if she did! No-one has ever come out of that hair salon looking the slightest bit different from when they went in!

When the girls depart for their lunch break Roy is waiting across the road for Hayley. He is holding a big bunch of flowers; big but not classy, they have the air of being the best offering from Dev's display (garage flowers - you women know what I mean!). Most touchingly though, Roy has put on his suit and a collar and tie for this important meeting. He has even left his shopping bag behind. Where does Roy attached that piece of string which holds his keys when he doesn't have his bag? Through the buttonhole of his anorak? Hayley is very short with him and won't even take the flowers from him but agrees to come to the cafe later to talk.

In the Rovers Dev is winding Toyah up about the new uniform she may have to wear as an employee of the Boozy Newt. Gail and the practice nurse are having a lunchtime drink and Peter and Linda are glaring and baring their teeth at each other. (Where I live that's a courtship ritual among the under-20s).

Tyrone visits Vera in hospital and asks her if she wants to know the gossip. "No I don't" says Vera " I am using my unaccustomed free time to finish reading this article on Socio-Linguistic speech pattern evolution among working class Northern women living in male-dominated communities". OK. That was a fib. Tyrone tells her that Natalie is selling the Rovers, Vera is delighted as she never much of Natalie's abilities in the mine hostess department anyway.

Later, Linda asks Mike about his marriage to Susan Barlow and he tells her about his wish for a family and Susan having an abortion without telling him. When Peter comes into the bar Mike goes over and greets him in a friendly way but is rudely rebuffed. Peter goes back to trying to chat up Liz. I must say that Beverley Callard is looking rough these days. Before you complain, I don't mean her looks as such, but she looks really haggard. I could quite believe that she is or has been ill.

Liz asks Natalie to put in a word for her to the Boozy management about the pub manager's job.

Meanwhile, over on Planet Lurrve (cunningly disguised as a bus shelter) sit Sarah and Glen. She asks him not to call her at home because her Mum wouldn' t like it. They soon cut the chat and get down to some serious snogging but are caught in the act by Little Brother from Hell. He is in his element as he now knows he has ideal blackmail material and he envisions a future of unlimited sweets, crisps and Pokemon cards, all extorted from his big Sis.

Back at home David is in his element as Sarah has to make the tea instead of him and he mentally lines up a few more tasks she can undertake to ensure his silence. "I feel as though I've won the lottery" smirks our Junior extortionist. Just wait David, big sisters always get their revenge!

Over at Roy's Rolls, chaos reigns supreme. Roy is trying to get clear before Hayley gets there, Toyah has managed to yank the top off a tap and water is spraying everywhere, Hayley arrives and decided this is a bad moment, Toyah dashes off and returns with Dennis and his toolbag and, to cap it all, Mr Social Worker chappie arrives. Roy has to tell the chap (whose name completely escapes me) that Hayley has left him. Has he any advice? He tells Roy to get in contact when things are more settled. Poor old Roy! Wet and alone.

Right that's is one of my Updates done and two to go. I'd better get typing!

Wednesday 20 December

Would you believe, I have just arrived home (pre-xmas drink with work colleagues), just in time to catch the beginning of tonights episode!

Candice and Sarah are at loggerheads in the Kabin. Candice says Sarah is not much fun anymore, she doesn't want to come out. Sarah says it is because of her baby, and she can't ask her mum to babysit.

Deidre sees Dev and Gina kissing goodbye in the car.

Emma tells Emily that Curly is having difficulty writing his speech. Emily offers to help.

Fred asks Duggie whose name was going on the door of the pub. Fred and Mike look at the article in the local paper. They are a bit annoyed that it only mentions Duggie.

Rita tells Emily and Norris that Anthony is looking for somewhere cheaper to move to. Norris refers to the newspaper article and Rita says what about the others in the partnership. Norris says they are not mentioned.

Fred and Mike ask Duggie again about name above the door. None of them can agree. Gina suggests to draw straws. Natalie says she is thinking moving to the Cotswolds where her cousin has a cottage. She says she will leave on 31 December.

Deidre unintenionnaly helps Dev to decide on a christmas present for Gina.

Fred wants to sell his meat through hotpot over the bar. Mike says he can't sell ladies knickers. They decide they are going to draw straws for the name over the door. Then they argue if the shortest straw wins or loses! Fred drew the shortest and Duggie the longest.

Ken refers Mike to the article which dosen't refer to anyone by Duggie. He tells Ken not to believe everything he reads in the papers.

Kevin tries to persuade Natalie not to leave. He has lost too many people, and doesn't want to lose her too.

Norris tells Emily that there is an interesting (boring) documentary on tv. Emily makes an excuse to go and see Curly. He offers to record it, but she is not interested.

Peter tells Ken and Deidre that there is a change of plans and he won't be going to see Susan till the new year. Deidre says she has invited Liz. Peter says he had a couple of drinks but she took it the wrong way. Ken says if it comes down to it, Peter is family.

Martin comes round to take David to football. Martin asks if the offer for xmas dinner still stand. She tells him he is more than welcome. He can wangle the time off.

Kevin apologises to Natalie for being over the top earlier. He wishes her happiness in what ever she does.

Dev and Gina discuss christmas presents. Ken sees them chatting and tells Deidre, it is great to be young and in love. Deidre agrees.

Sarah is left alone to look after the baby. When she is teething and crying, she turns up the volume on the tv.

Curly tells Emily that he is having great difficulty with words. She suggests just jotting down a few words and they can elaborate on that. He just talks about life, and Emily jots down the notes. Emma walks in unnoticed by Curly.

The proprietors are now discussing happy hour. One view it brings in the punters, others say it is only for the kids. They ask Natalie who doesn't want to get involved.

Sarah has the tv volume so high, that her teacher neighbour comes in to complain, and she says she can hear her baby crying.

Deidre tells Liz that Peter will be around for christmas. Liz says she can't come, but doesn't mind.

Kevin says someone gave him some tickets for the theatre, and invites Natalie out for the last time.

The proprietors are shouting and arguing in the pub. Mike threatens to end the partnership.

The teacher thought that Sarah would be out at the christmas party. She thought she could get a babysitter. Sarah explains that nobody wants to know her when they realise she has a baby. She offers to help out at school if there are problems with other kids.

Friday 22 December
Sunday 24 December

Well I must have been writing these updates for over a year now and sadly this is the latest one has appeared. I fear Christmas has interrupted the flow this week and I doubt if New Year will permit normal service next week either.

Written by Peter Mills, Directed by Jim Loach

The Croppers are thinking about the boy who broke in the previous evening. Roy can not understand how in a civilised society a boy of that age (about 10?) should need to steal - Hayley thinks he is a good man, Roy thinks not - he failed to help the boy.

Rosie is ten and Danny is buying a few things from Rita in readiness for the party. But they and Emily are thinking of the wedding - Curly and Emma.

Ashley knocks on Curly's door. Ash asks if Curly how he broke out of jail - seems he was in on the joke! Curly was afraid he would never get out. Curly admits he has never been more ready in his life - are we going to have a soap wedding without high drama?

At the Rovers Duggie and Fred are accusing each other of double crossing. Neither believes the other. Kevin is looking very smart after Rosie's party and Natalie invites him to Christmas lunch just like last year. Kevin and Fred depart for the church. Martin is talking to Carole on his mobile. He wants to know about Becky and why she is back. They arrange to meet later.

Roy is cleaning the cafe when he sees the red headed boy emerging from a lock up where he has spent the night. Roy rushes out and eventually gets him to come into the cafe for some chips and the boy chooses to come and wait in the warm.

The church is filling as the choir sing "O Come All Ye Faithful". Ash tells Curly to look on the bright side - he will never get another parking ticket. Curly is getting worried she will not turn up. Curly turns round and spots Danny - at last someone he knows. Curly looks awful but has never been so happy in his life. He keeps asking Ash what the time is.

At the cafe the chips are going down well and Roy asks the boy if he would like a burger or chips but he asks for some salad cream which he adds in copious quantities to the chips. Roy reckons that they go well together (why on earth did Roy think he could not be a foster parent?).

Curly is starting to believe Emma will not arrive - even the vicar thinks she is late when Emma finally arrives at the Church with a surprise bridesmaid - Alice dashes to the front of the church with a cry of "Daddy" (and tears are rising in your writer's eyes) as he hugs her and then looks towards his beautiful bride who has arranged this wonderful wedding present for her husband. Ahhh, marvellous stuff - no soap wedding without high drama - I told you!!

Emma and Curly are married. (Plea to sws - can they please remain happily married forever?). Both have huge grins.

Hayley bustles into the cafe to find Roy getting some ice cream for their visitor. Roy explains the circumstances and the boy speaks - a well spoken young man, quite polite.

Curly and Emma leave the church and Emma throws the bouquet - which is caught by Deirdre. Curly picks up Alice and kisses her and then hands her onto Ash to be taken to the reception.

Roy and Hayley are chatting to the boy and they have been wondering if they can help - or someone they can contact. Hayley starts asking questions - pushing a little too hard and he gets up to go but Hayley reminds him it is cold outside and he is clearly in two minds over going.

Back at the reception Ashley is giving his speech whilst Alice sits on Curly's knee. Ash has spent four weeks on the speech and asks everyone to toast the bride and groom. Kev calls on Curly to speak. Curly is going to dedicate the rest of his life to making Emma happy. He has two women in his life - Emma and Alice and they are both beautiful and he is very happy and he promises he will never let her down. He thanks the guests for coming and sits down.

Roy and Hayley have tempted the lad upstairs for a bath and Hayley suggests that she will invent a name for him if he will not tell them his real name. After a couple of suggestions, including Theobald, the boy finally reveals that his name is Wayne and they say "Hallo Wayne". Hayley tells Roy to phone the police and but they are overheard and Wayne makes a dash for freedom.

There has been a phone call but Christine (the girl's governess or similar) has gone down ill with food poisoning and cannot look after Alice. Curly and Emma instantly cancel the honeymoon and decide to spend a night at home - Curly will have both his women in his house on Christmas Day. Curly and Emma start the dancing. Ashley catches Max having a drink and they exchange words. Ash tries to lay down the law and Max just gives him a big kiss and grabs another drink behind his back! Curly is wishing Alma well with Frank.

Outside Carole has turned up to talk to Martin about Becky. Carole gives him short shrift - Becky has moved on. It turns out that Becky is staying with Carole. Martin is all for dashing off to her house but Carole convinces him that it is not worth it and wishes him a Happy Christmas and departs.

Roy and Hayley have managed to get Wayne back indoors. Hayley explains there must be people worried about him. Roy asks who Wayne has run away from. Roy and Hayley explain that they have no children but they would be worried. Wayne lives in a children's home normally. He was home for Christmas but ran away from his mother's. Roy suggests they all go upstairs and have a sleep and have a further discussion in the morning and this is agreed.

Peter is buying a drink in the Rovers. He eyes Karen Phillips (Linda's old friend) on the other side of the bar and they start chatting. In the absence of anyone else to talk to she agrees - a double vodka.

Curly, Emma and Alice leave the reception and head for Coronation Street.

As ever the Street covers the extremes in a single episode, comedy in the light jokes from Ashley, Fred and Duggie high drama with the arrival of Alice the concern and love of Hayley and Roy for someone in trouble

And unlike other soaps the action is not relentless doom and gloom.

Happy New Year everyone.

Monday 25 December

This hour long festive episode was brought to you by the writing talents of Julie Geary and directed by John Anderson

At the Watts household the newlyweds open their gifts and Curly finds that Emma has brought him a camcorder. This is the ideal gadget for parents who will no longer need to rely on photos of baby posed in their birthday suit on the rug to embarrass teenage children. In future parents will be able to show boy /girlfriends videos of their loved one having a bath, beating up their siblings, singing in the school choir etc. Glad they didn't have them when I were a gal as seeing me as The Snow Queen in the school play would surely discourage potential suitors faster than any of my bad habits could. Curly of course immediately videos Alice opening her presents, Alice laughing, Alice waving at Daddy, Alice looking lovable, etc etc. Ashley pops in, having seen activity in the Watts house, to see why the lovebirds aren't on honeymoon. Finding that they are planning on eating fish fingers for lunch he invites them to join Pop in to the Peacocks to dine.

Over at the Croppers' flat a reminder that for some children Christmas is no happier than any other day of the year. Wayne is eating (devouring!) his breakfast and happily joins Roy in a discussion about dinosaurs. He is rather scathing that the free gift in the cereal packet is wrongly described as a velocaraptor (sp?) when it is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. I'm afraid I can't tell the difference so I have to take his word for it. Roy is delighted to find that he and Wayne have a common interest. Wayne reveals that he wants to be a vet at a zoo if he can get the GCSE' to go to university. Unfortunately his Dad thinks that dinosaurs are for babies and hat real boys should be interested in football and stuff. Then he adds, "He's not my real dad, he just lives with my mum." Already I know I won't like this wannabe parent. Roy tells Wayne that it is good to have an ambition and by his face we know that perhaps Roy has had similar ambitions, which were not realised. Roy eventually gets Wayne to write down his mother's telephone number so that they can let her know that he is safe.

Round at the Duckies it is a hive of activity; Vera is due home from hospital today and there is much tidying, cleaning and food preparation taking place. While Jack goes to the hospital Tyrone and Maria are going to cook the turkey. Mystic Vivienne foresees a culinary disaster on the horizon!

Next visit is to the Webster/Hargreaves household where Sally and Danny are watching the girls open their gifts. The girls have the latest trend in trainers from Danny and they are delighted with them. He is pleased to have got it right in that problematic gift area, the present from the not-quite-Stepdad. Unfortunately this good mood does not last long once Kevin arrives with a sack of presents. First gift - a Playstation! Oh dear! Kevin's gift moves to the top of the pressie league and Danny's face moves to glumsville. Sally invites Kevin to stay for dinner and Danny's face falls even further. So does Sally's when Kevin tells her he is expected at Natalie's!! When he leaves Danny tells Sally that it is Kevin's business where he spends Christmas Day but Sally is sure that her arch enemy Natalie is up to something.

At the Platt's Martin arrives for dinner and is greeted by Damienxxx sorry, David still canvassing votes for his Act of Parliament (Weatherfield Division) which will allow persons born on Christmas Day (like, for instance, himself!) to have an extra "official" birthday in mid-year - with extra presents of course.

Sarah thanks Gail and Martin for everything that they have done for her during the past year. Gail replies, 'Well, we got there in the end, didn't we.' 'Well, most of us, anyway." says Martin.

Audrey tells Martin he should consider himself very lucky that Gail is good enough to let him spend Christmas there. Luckily Audrey herself is not staying as she has been invited to the Peacock's with Fred.

Hayley has contacted Wayne's parents and they are coming to collect him. He does not seem thrilled at the prospect. He tells Roy that his Mum couldn't cope with him when he got into trouble at school so she had him put into care. Roy is obviously very worried about what will become of Wayne and can see why fostering may be the right option for he and Hayley. It is not just about Hayley's desire for a child, it is about the child and Roy can see that they can make a difference. Roy shows Wayne a book about Africa that was his own when he was Wayne's age. The pair of them get on so well; this is probably the first time that Wayne has met an adult who understands him and his interests. And for Roy he can see in Wayne the young Roy, and can perhaps see how differently his own life could have turned out. Unfortunately Christmas soaps, like pantos, have to have a villain and Corrie's comes in the shape of the thuggish Alex Swinton. He introduces himself as Wayne's stepfather but the boy is quick to put him right. Swinton says he is good as, he just never got round to marrying Wayne's mum. He hugs Wayne and tells him to say thank you to the nice people for looking after him. Wayne flinches and Roy looks on in alarm as the seemingly friendly Mr Swinton takes him off back to see his mum. Roy watches from the upstairs window as Wayne is taken to the car, and grows even more alarmed as it is obvious even without hearing what is being said that Wayne is being shouted at and threatened. Roy is very distressed as he commentates on what he is seeing to Hayley. "He's hitting him." With that Roy dashes downstairs and out of the door. Outside Swinton is warning Wayne to "wait til I get you home, I'll give you a battering." Roy is shaking with fear but he goes to Wayne's defence and tells Swinton to leave him alone and that the Croppers will look after him until it is time to go back to the children's home. Swinton turns on Roy and looks about to hit him as well but Fred walks past and calls out a greeting. Swinton doesn't want a witness especially a big so-and-so like Fred. Like most bullies he likes his victims to be smaller, weaker, less articulate. He is not prepared to take on a Cropper-Elliott coalition. He, has a last snarl at Wayne, jumps in his car and goes. Not before time for poor Roy who has to have a sit down.

At Ken's house Deirdre is cooking the festive turkey assisted by Blanche. Blanche is not actually doing any work, she is just offering suggestions as to how the job could be done better. Deirdre restrains herself from committing matricide by clocking Blanche with a well-aimed Yule Log. Liz arrives and she and Deirdre enjoy a calming drink.

And now dear readers we feel as though we are transported into the wonderful world of HELLO magazine, as Janice and Leslie Battersby invite us into their lovely home. We see the Battersbys relaxing in their luxuriously appointed living and dining room with their good friends of the Weatherfield "in-crowd" Ms Eileen *** and Mr Dennis ***. Eileen and Dennis were introduced at a social soiree earlier this year in the local fashionable venue The Rovers Return Cocktail Bar and Brasserie and have been inseparable ever since. The share an interest in transportation. Now the two couples are opening their charming gifts to one another. Dennis has bought Eileen a Karaoke machine. How er.. charming. And Leslie has given Janice a video of that cinematic classic Casablanca. Perhaps he hopes that Janice will notice the similarities between himself and strong but loving Humphrey Bogart or handsome and principled Paul Henreid. Or perhaps Leslie is just a cheapskate. But Leslie is just being a playful little imp. After finishing off his pre-prandial sherryxxx sorry can of lager, Lesley reveals that he has a further gift and presents Janice with an emerald ring to as a demonstration of his love for her. How wonderful! And what else can a lady say to such a generous gift but "Where did yer nick that?" Les is able to confirm that he was with Les when he bought it at the jeweller's.

Back at the Barlows' the turkey is on the table but Peter is nowhere to be found. Ken pops over to the flat to see if his darling boy has accidentally overslept, but he arrives in time for the last few seconds of a game of tonsil hockey between Peter and Karen on the doorstep. Ah! So that's why Peter is late for lunch!

Natalie welcomes Kevin to the back room of the Rovers and offers him a drink but says that she won't join him as Vinnie Jnr is having a bit of a kick about and she has heartburn. Kevin is obviously thing back to earlier this year when Alison was in the same situation and he reflects on what might have been.

At last! Vera is home and everyone is delighted to see her. But she is led into the house with her eyes closed. What is happening! Open your eyes, Vera! Surprise, surprise! It is just what Vera has always wanted! A new kitchen fitted with all the latest gadgets! Even a cupboard with a carousel basket for tins! The effect of the new kitchen is heightened by Jack having employed TARDIS Builders and Contractors (Weatherfield) Ltd (established 1963) to do the work. They were obviously recommended by Rita after the sterling job they did in the Kabin. They have wrought the same miracle at the Duckies. The kitchen seems bigger than anyone would have thought possible! Unfortunately the back door seems to have got lost! Never mind. Vera is chuffed to little mint balls and that's all that matters. Tyrone tells Vee how much he has missed her and even Monica has been of her Bonios. Vera says that now she's home she has every intention of staying there. Jack tells her that they could have a problem in that case. He realised when he came so close to losing her that that should appreciate their time together and use some of their money to enjoy themselves. He has booked a three-week luxury Caribbean cruise leaving next weeks! Vera's cup of happiness almost overfloweth!

Back at the Croppers Wayne is enjoying a better Christmas lunch than he could have expected at home or at Home. Roy says that he should start calling he and Hayley by their first names. Roy would also like to give him a present but he was unprepared and has neither gift nor wrapping paper. So he hopes that Wayne won't mind a used book in a carrier bag. It is the book on Africa that they had looked at earlier and Wayne is pleased as Punch but worried about accepting what was one of Roy's childhood favourites. But Roy tells him that is why he wants him to have it. He knows that Wayne will enjoy the book and take care of it. Wayne says he will hide it under his mattress back at the children's home. That's where he keeps things he doesn't want the other kids to steal. Po9r Roy can't believe what he is hearing.

Liz doesn't want to stay at the Barlow's for lunch as she has no desire to run into Peter, she tries to excuse herself on the grounds that Natalie might need her at the Rovers. Deirdre assures her that Natalie will be fine and anyway dinner will be served as soon as Peter arrives. He comes in and apologises for his lateness. "You needn't have bothered," says sweet old Blanche " This turkey's dry enough to choke a camel!' Deirdre looks set to explode. Ken tries to keep the occasion polite by asking after Jim. Liz says he was able to call her that morning but is understandable very down. Peter makes a few comments about the similarities between prisoners and sailors, more specifically the similarities in their wives' behaviour. "They're separated from their men, and some decide it's not worth the wait and find someone else. If you don't believe me, ask my ex wife!' Now I felt that his comments, though not the thing for the dinner table, were intended more as bitterness about his own situation and his wife leaving him. However, Liz assumes that this is a dig at her and snaps at him. She storms out to see if she is needed in the pub. With that Deirdre throws a wobbly and tells Peter exactly what she thinks of him, which can be summed up as Not Very Much.

There is a knock on the door at the Duckies and it's a surprise visitor for Vera. It is grandson Paul and his Mum. He looks really well. Unfortunately things are not going so well in the kitchen where the veg are all ready but the turkey is distinctly pale looking. Oh dear, Tyrone and Maria have calculated the cooking time for a six pound turkey instead of a six KILO turkey.

Natalie tries to comfort Kevin as he tells her that he thinks he lost Alison and Jake as a punishment for what he did. She doesn't understand, but Kevin tells her about sleeping with Sally before his wedding to Alison. Natalie tells Kevin that sometimes these things happen. He is going to kiss her but she stops him. Not a good idea. They end up hugging and Kevin tells her that she is a good friend and he'll miss her.

Over at the Peacocks, chaos reigns. Maxine had obviously envisaged an elegant luncheon entertaining Fred and Audrey, but suddenly she has Curly and Emma to feed as well as Alice who is currently involved in trying to murder Bella the pussycat with the maximum amount of noise. Curly looks on dotingly while videoing everything Alice does. Audrey and Maxine lose no time in posing themselves for the budding film director. Alice's behaviour leads Fred to give his views on child rearing! Less Mary Poppins, more Wackford Squeers!

It is time for Wayne to go back to the Children's Home and Roy and Hayley would like to accompany him. The carer says it isn't usually allowed but relents when she sees how much it will please Wayne. When they arrive the kids are running riot. Wayne is greeted by a right little cow who calls him names and takes his book away from him. The carer tells the Croppers that Wayne will be OK if he learns to stand up for himself. It's obvious that Roy is not so sure.

Round at the Platt household David has worn down the resistance of his longsuffering parents to the idea of an official birthday. He'll have his 2000 birthday on New Year's Eve and in future it will be on June 25th. Martin says goodbye and Gail is glad they all got on so well. Martin mutters that it is only for one day of the year, but, after all, that's one day more than the Barlows!

Vera is delighted that Paul looks so well, but the boy is disappointed that his Dad isn't there. Vera is lost for what to say but Jack hurriedly says that Terry has to work away from home a lot, that is why he didn't come to the hospital either. The Watts family arrives to visit and there is much excitement of the new daughter (Alice), the new grandson (Paul) and the new kitchen (integral rubbish bins!). Vera is worried that they should not have lied about Terry but Jack tells her that just because they have spent a lifetime being disappointed in Terry, there is no need for Paul to feel the same. As usual Jack mixes pragmatism with compassion.

Drear goes to the Rovers to get away from the Joyeux Noel that is happening with Blanche, Peter and Ken. Karen comes in and the reason for Peter's earlier tardiness becomes clear. Later, when Ken arrives Deirdre apologises for losing her temper with Peter, but Ken says that it is all OK. "After all, you expect a row a Christmas". Huh! Call that a row! It wouldn't have raised an eyebrow in Walford where the EastEnders lot were punching, shouting, and swinging baseball bats!!

Sally and Danny arrive and Natalie serves them with a knowing smile at Sally, she in turn looks daggers at Natalie.

At Chateau Batteau there is an unexpected and unknown visitor. It is Jason, Eileen's elder boy who has got bored at his Dad's house so has come out to have a sulk somewhere else. With the best line of the episode Eileen introduces him to Dennis. 'Love Of My Life, meet Fruit Of My Loins.' Ha ha!

Jason rejects Dennis's friendly overtures but Eileen says not to worry " 'He's like that with 'all' my boyfriends. Just give him a little bit of time.' !!!

Roy is very distressed about the situation with Wayne. 'I knew as soon as I saw that Alex that he was no good. He was just like my stepfather. All smiles and niceness in front of people but underneath all that he was a violent, nasty man. A bully. That's why 'I' left home, because I wasn't going to put up with it any more. Oh, poor Roy!

Martin tells Danny that he decided not to go and see Rebecca and Danny thinks he may have made the right decision, but Martin is not too sure and walks out. But when Martin arrives back at his lonely bachelor flat he quickly comes to a decision and goes straight back out again. He drives to Carol's house, where a lively party is in progress, and peers in the window hoping to catch a glimpse of Becky. She comes into view but is soon followed by a handsome hunk, who she pulls under the mistletoe for a spot of the tongue tango.

Well, what a good episode. Plenty of laughs but also some lump in the throat moments especially between Roy and Wayne who is a great little actor.

And from me - thanks Vivienne - K Richard Whitbread

Tuesday 26 December

Wednesday 27 December

The writer for this episode is David Lane, Noreen Kershaw directed.

Those viewers who watch this anywhere in the world but the UK may consider themselves very lucky that they will see this episode in the spring; we UK-ers had to watch the following scene only two days after Christmas. In other words we were still groaning from over indulgence in food and drink; many of us had a headache, upset tum or both. And then Scene One was inflicted on us ..

The programme opens in Nurse Carol's spare bedroom which has bright blue walls and orange and yellow bed linen. Just as you think it can't be worse the camera pans down to the revolting sight of Martin's bare torso, which is whiter than the Duckworth's turkey. Finally, quelle horreur! We realise that the reason for our pallid hero disporting himself in this state of undress is that he has been making the beast with the two backs with Nurse Becky. Hence the smug grin on his chops. Incidentally they have one of those special L-shaped film and TV prop duvets which only reach the man's waist but cover the lady's chest! But enough of this concupiscence. Let us leave the lovebirds and hie us to the Rovers .

Where Ken and Deirdre are enjoying a quiet drink until they are joined by Peter who has come to check that it is still OK to borrow the car. Deirdre immediately goes into one and speaks to Peter with her usual patience and forbearance. "Moan, moan, insurance, moan, moan " she moans whilst her neck tendons get ready for a major frenzy. Ken assures Peter that he will add him to his. Ken gives Deirdre what my sister would call a bit of an old-fashioned look. He is beginning to get the message that she is not over keen on his boy.

Back at the Home for Randy NHS staff, Nurse Becky is trying to persuade Martin to come wit5h her and enjoy the delights that Dubai has to offer, sun, sand and ess-ee-ex. Martin thinks it would be better, that is more convenient for Martin, if Nurse Becky came back to the chilly environs of Weatherfield where there is no sun, no sand, but he'd do his best with the ess-ee-ex. She doesn't want to come back with only part of her two-year contract completed. And Martin doesn't want to leave his children and granddaughter. Stalemate. (But I bet we'll hear plenty more droning on about this before a decision is made.)

Sally talks to Gail about her worry that Danny will find out that she enjoyed a spot of rumpeh-pumpeh with Kevin on the night before his wedding to Alison. As Kevin has told Natalie, and as Natalie took such pleasure in letting Sally know that she knew, it seems a foregone conclusion that Natalie will tell Danny. Sally is sure that Natalie won't rest until she has ruined Sally's life again.

At the Croppers Roy is wrapping a watch and says he will give it to the Social Service man. It seems that Gail gave it to Roy a couple of years ago but he has not used it as his passing-the-eleven-plus Timex is still performing adequately. Hayley is not sure that bribing Mr Thing is a good idea, but Roy explains that he wants Mr Thing to pass the present to Wayne. Hayley thinks it would be a good idea to take the gift to the Children's Home themselves, the staff will surely bend the rules and let them see Wayne if they just turn up without warning. My thanks at this point to Mike Plowman, from whose visual update I have just learned that Mr Thing's name is Mr Hartnell. I also learned that Mike too was having a problem with the name. This character could affect Roy and Hayley's future to an enormous degree but I find it impossible to remember anything about him. Without rewatching the videotape I cannot even recall his face! Hayley is going to get time off in the afternoon to visit Wayne. Roy is sceptical that Mike Baldwin will allow such liberties, but Hayley points out that at the moments he is too busy playing with the Little Publican Kit that he bought himself for Xmas to notice what is going on in the factory!

Sally decides that it is time for a word or two hundred with Kevin. She marches into the garage and sets about giving him a tongue lashing for telling Natalie their secret. Kevin says he hadn't meant to tell Natalie it just all came out when he was trying to come to terms with what happened between he and Sally. Sally makes in quite clear that she is not interested in Kevin now, she won't be interested in Kevin in the future, that even if Danny finds out what happened from Natalie and leaves, Sally still will not be interested in having Kevin back. Is that clear? Of course. (My money is on Kevin and Sally remarrying next Christmas.)

Danny and Martin are discussing Nurse Becky. Has Martin had a chance to talk to his erstwhile inamorata? Martin seems most disgruntled as he explains to Danny that he not only slept with her, he indulged in some rumpeh-pumpeh in the Multi Coloured bedroom. Unfortunately she now wants him to go to Dubai for more of the same. Danny thinks this sounds OK but Martin tells him that someone without children wouldn't understand.

The interviews for the Rovers Return Manager are about to begin. Linda reminds Mike that a "slapper like Liz MacDonald" is NOT what's required. Toyah asks Natalie to put in a word with whoever gets the job to ensure that she can continue living in the pub.

At their house, Les and Janice are getting dressed up in their Sunday best because Les has planned a surprise. Surely experience has taught Janice that the words "Les" and "surprise" do not got together like love and marriage or horse and carriage. She must realise that a surprise organised by Les is a nasty, embarrassing shock by any other name. Les assures Janice that it is OK for her to have time off as he has explained to Linda that Janice needs an extra day's holiday. (This means that Mike, Linda, Hayley and Janice are now out of the factory; it would probably be more cost effective to close the place for the afternoon.)

Martin waits at the bus stop but when the bus arrives makes no attempt to board. Why could that be? Oh he has a visitor. 'Tis Nurse Becky who, unlike the NHS, does home visits. Sarah and David are playing in the street nearby, or at least Sarah is watching David being a hazard to life and limb on his new scooter. Sarah looks over and sees Martin with his arm round a strange woman and looks thoughtful.

Ken has had a brainwave! Why don't he and Deirdre go to Scotland with Peter to visit Susan? This is obviously the clarity of thought and sensitivity to others that has helped Ken on his career path from teacher to trolley pusher. On the Delight-o-meter Deirdre's reaction to this plan fails to register. She tells Ken that she had already promised Dev that she'd work over New Year.

In the Rovers the interviews begin. Duggie likes the first applicant, Ruth, who can demonstrate that she increased profits at all the places she previously worked. She also has the personality of a lettuce, and alienates Fred by explaining that she would put pasta and salads on the menu. Well, that won't improve the profits of Elliott and Son, Butchers, (Purveyors Of Meats And Baked Goods To The Licensed Trade). Les and Janice ask Natalie if there is a chance of a couple of late applicants being seen. Janice is aghast to find that this is the surprise extra Xmas present that Les had promised. Les has had to apply for the job just like everyone else. However she obviously thinks that the job is in the bag for she has made absolutely no effort with her outfit, hair or preparation for the questions that she might be asked. The new owners agree to see Les and Janice without knowing who they will be interviewing. Their faces!! They look about as horrified as Janice does. Les assures the panel that he would still drink as much if he were behind the bar as he does when he is in front so they needn't worry about profits dropping. I would think that having Les run a pub would make the profits non-existent not less!

The care worker at the Children's Home is explaining again to Roy and Hayley that they are not allowed to visit Wayne. No one is allowed to break the rules and they must not do this again. Wayne sees that something has happened but does not know what.

Kevin wants to know why Natalie told Sally that she knew the secret about Kevin's pre-wedding night with his ex-wife. Natalie says that she was fed up with Sally laying down the law and going on about Natalie's morals. She wanted to wipe the smug expression off her face. Should she tell Danny? Kevin says no, because Nat is leaving but he, Kevin, has to stay in the area.

In the Rovers Linda tells Les that she would not have agreed the extra leave for Janice if she'd had any idea what the time off was for. Mike only puts up with Janice and her mouth because she is such a good machinist. Fred asks for silence in his usual manner, i.e. by shouting down everyone else. The new manager of the Rovers Return Inn will be .. Liz. Quelle surprise! There are hugs and good wishes all round.

At his luxury bachelor apartment Martin breaks it to Becky that he will knotty be going to Dubai. He cannot abandon his family. She thinks that they will be OK and that he should not throw away all his chances for happiness. Martin says their only chance is for Becky to come back to Weatherfield. Becky becomes very upset and tells him that it is her or his children; she is not prepared to share.

Just then Sarah arrives, pretending that she thought her dad was alone. Martin asks her to go and he'll catch her later but Becky says that she is just going. Martin doesn't want her to leave like this but she says she loves him, and then says goodbye. I don't think he'll ever see her again.

Sarah asks if that was Becky, and Martin who is now crying tells his daughter that it was and that she wanted him to go back with her to work in Dubai. Sarah asks why he didn't go. Doesn't Martin love her and want to be with her? Martin can't speak through his tears. She asks if Gail knows that Becky was home. When Martin tells her No she holds him and says that she won 't say anything to her Mum. She seems to understand all the hurt he is feeling. The episode ends with Martin sobbing on Sarah's shoulder. (That made two old heads on one pair of young shoulders in that scene.)

Cue Vivienne having a bit of a cry, even though I don't like Martin's character at all.

OK I'm getting caught up with my updates. And I'll be glad when Kathy comes back from her exotic holiday and reclaims Wednesdays!! Then I will just be doing Mondays.

Thanks for the encouraging messages.

Happy Corrie watching in 2001.

Friday 29 December

Hayley and Roy can't understand why they couldn't see Wayne. They think it is all red tape.

Janice is concerned that Les told Linda that she was on holiday, and that she maybe out of a job.

Martin tells Danny that he said goodbye to Rebecca. He thinks he did the right thing.

Vera is preparing for her cruise. She has run out of frocks. Jack thinks it is like a chinese laundry with all the clothes.

Janice tries to explain Mike that she didn't know that Les had put her forward for the interview. He says to her to take it is a warning, and she won't lose her job.

Sally tells Gail that Kevin has persuaded Natalie not to mention about him and Natalie going to bed before the wedding, to Danny.

Deidre tells Dev that she really had a rotten christmas with family dramas, but she managed to do a projected stock report for him.

David and Gail go to the corner shop to buy food for official birthday (his real birthday is around christmas). He doesn't want sandwiches for his party, but pizzas.

Deidre overhears Dev making a booking at an expensive resturant. He asks for it to be special as he wants to thank somebody.

Mr Hartnell unexpectedly comes to the cafe to see Roy and Hayley.

Les thinks Deidre had a word with Baldwin to make sure Liz got the job. Of course she denies it.

Mr Hartnell says he knew they visited the childrens' home. He says they were told the rules. Roy thinks the system is as much to blame as they are. Hayley wonders if this will affect the decision about fostering. He says he will have to include it in his report, but the rest of it will show how good they both are.

Duggie asks for the drinks to be put on the tab. The others didn't know he had a tab. He says that it is a perk.

Liz says she wants to keep Toyah on. They say they will think about it.

Deidre asks if she can have a longer lunch hour so she can go into town. Dev says they are hardly rushed, and agrees.

Gail is pleased that her and Martin are getting on ok. However she fears it may flare up again when it gets to solicitors and courts.

Sally asks Danny what is bothering him. He says he sees how well her and Kevin are getting on, and he is feeling a bit jealous.

Peter comes into the shop to tell Deidre that he has crashed his dad's car.

Roy and Hayley try to explain how they feel about Wayne. Mr Hartnell says they should put Wayne out of their minds, and get themselves accepted as foster parents.

Vera comes into the Kabin. Norris thinks she looks very smart. She says they don't let riff raff onto the cruises. Fred thinks she is looking well after a major op.

Ken sees Deidre at home, and queries a new top. She says it is one that she doesn't normally wear. He then sees Peter who explained that the car is a write off after swerving to miss a dog. Ken says not to worry about the car, the insurance will cover.

Vera and Jack set off for their cruise. Jack is concerned she doesn't overdo things on the cruise. Tyrone and Maria are looking forward to having the house to themselves for three weeks.

Norris tells Liz that he is looking forward to the changes she will make. Norris then suggests some ideas of his own. Liz says she doubts she will change much.

Danny tells Martin about his concerns with Kevin. Martin suggests talking to him, but Danny thinks it may go wrong.

Dev closes early and then takes Gina out much to Deidre's upset and disappointment.

Hayley is concerned all their hard work may come to nothing. Roy thinks they can trust Mr Hartnell. Hayley says he must not argue with him.

Peter explains to Ken that he had lost his license two months ago. He therefore gave the other driver his name. Ken says he can't go along with that, but Peter says if he dosen't he may go to prison.

Sunday 31 December

For those who missed the Honours List Bill Roache received an award as did Trevor Harrison - Trevor who you say? He plays Eddie Grundie in the long radio fly on the wall documentary "The Archers" which today celebrated 50 years of continuous broadcasting. To all those honoured and those taking part in all of the soaps may I thank you for the year past and wish you an ever more productive new year.

Written by Joe Turner, directed by Noreen Kershaw.

Natalie is packing as Kev comes in - he is working on New Year's Eve. He will be babysitting tonight and Natalie asks him to keep in touch. Fred wanders in as they embrace and out again with maximum embarrassment.

Audrey arrives at the Platts where they are celebrating David's official birthday. David gets no present from Audrey who is remembering Alf's decease in the chair he is sitting in. David apologises for being rude to Audrey but she is upset.

Ken and Deirdre are discussing Peter's request to back up his lie over crashing the car and pretending to be Ken as Peter has lost his licence. Finally she accepts Ken has to help but departs to work as Peter arrives. Peter denies he had forgotten his ban - but it was simply a sequence of events. Ken has made a decision.

Norris is trying to answer a series of questions in the paper. He reckons that the year 2000 has been good for him - a place to live, a job and friends. He is a happy man. Rita asks to be shown around his world. Danny comes into the shop - he cannot find Martin. Gail tells him that he is at her house celebrating the "official birthday". Danny asks Gail about Sally - he loves the girls - he wants a proper family - but he sometimes feels like a spare part. Danny wants to ask Sally to marry him.

Back at the Platts, Martin and Audrey are discussing David. Sarah has her own news - she is seeing Glen again and does not want any difficulties - she reckons if she tells all they have nothing to worry about. Gail already knows. Martin says that they will still worry because they are parents. Anyway Glen is coming round to babysit tonight and Gail has said yes, which Martin endorses. Audrey observes that perhaps there is some maturity in the family after all.

At the shop there is a huge bunch of flowers from Dev to Deirdre - she puts them in the shop to cheer the place up. Liz arrives and hopes hew new bosses are as generous. Deirdre does not seem so impressed having assumed the flowers were for Geena.

Gail walks into the Corner Shop followed by Danny. Gail cannot shake him off. She reckons that Danny should ask Sally not her!. Will she say yes? Gail does not know but does know that whatever happens Ken will still want to the father of the gurls. "Danny just ask her"! ends the scene.

Down at the Rovers the Croppers have a gift for the expected baby. They give Natalie a matinee jacket and she is (as are we) touched by this unexpected present. She does not know what to say.

Peter is ranting at Ken - he could end up in prison. Ken tells him he should face up to his responsibilities. Peter has his say - Ken is making him feel that he is being sent away like when he was six. Ken says that is not true. Peter reckons Ken has no right to call him his dad. He departs. (Back history - Ken has had little to do with his various children and is troubled by it - and with such specimens as Peter appears to be (I do not remember his earlier visitations) or Susan who married Mike - I would say to Ken to cast him off now).

Anyway after the interval (the partwork season has opened), we return to the party at the Platts, where David is complaining about the girls who have been invited to the party! Elsewhere Danny is still asking Gail's advice. She tells him to do it tonight - at the right moment.

Along at the Kabin, Rita and Anthony are departing, Anthony has lost his shopping list - Rita assures him everything will be fine. Anthony and Rita are having Norris and Emily to dinner. However, in the first hint that this will be highly entertaining we are told that Amanda has invited herself along this evening as well. Rita suggests simply increasing the quantities. It will be a wonderful evening.

Back at the Platts, Danny had detected an unusual smell and marched the boys downstairs. He had caught them setting light to plastic toys - potentially with dangerous results from toxic fumes, using a lighter. David denies that he has been smoking. David gets a telling off by both Martin and Gail in front of everyone else. Glen arrives and Sarah introduces him to Bethany officially.

Ken is sunk in despair looking at photos trying to work out where it went wrong as Deirdre returns from work. It seems Ken is not going to lie for Peter. A touching little scene ensues. Ken admires the flowers - not for him but for her from Dev - who calls Deirdre his rock. But says Ken I thought you were my rock. Deirdre responds that she is - and they smile at each other.

Out in the Street Roy and Hayley watch first Danny and Sally, then Martin and Gail head for the Rovers. Audrey is unhappy with the Battersbys decorations. All arrive in the Rovers.

Behind the bar are Fred, Mike and Duggie, plus Liz, Toyah, Geena and Linda. Then Audrey is invited to do the honours. Duggie wanders in the back and says that Natalie must come through. Natalie thought she was making a fresh start but now she feels like she is walking away. Duggie re-assures her they want to send her off in style. Natalie gives him the keys of the Rovers.

Norris, Emily and Rita are waiting for Anthony to finish cooking in about 10 minutes.

In the Bar they sing "For she's a jolly good fellow". Duggie speaks on behalf of the new owners. He thanks her for running a damn good pub fir two years. They cannot let her go empty handed and they give her a pushchair and a teddy bear (did she get to keep them in real life I wonder).

Glen and Sarah start kissing but Sarah seems reluctant and they stop "in case David comes downstairs".

Back at Anthony's they are into the meal when the door bell rings - it is Amanda (who like most children had been unable to phone to confirm her intentions). Amanda has a surprise for Anthony - Isabel (Anthony's wife). She has been allowed home for one night. Anthony takes her into the dining room and introduces Emily and Norris. Only Amanda seems unfazed by the event. Norris gets an extra chair and Isabel takes one look at the chair and refuses to sit on the cushion - she can reach the table. Now I checked carefully - but there was no cushion on the chair. Anthony re-assures her there is no cushion and she sits. Amanda remarks that it is always nice when families get together.

Back at the Rovers they are all embracing Natalie as she leaves for the last time. Roy and Hayley are wandering what Wayne is doing. Roy hopes that he is thinking of them as they are thinking of him. Hayley wanders what the New Year will hold - perhaps they will get a child. Roy observes that in that case 2001 will be a very special year. They raise a toast.

Natalie walks over the Danny and Sally. Sally hopes it all goes well. Natalie observes that it is a double celebration for her - a New Year and that her men are safe again! The pub empties to see Natalie off outside. Danny stops Sally going and gets down on one knee and asks Sally to marry him.

Final farewells are said outside. Natalie will call once she is settled. Kev has briefly slipped out from the gurls and waves farewell. She stops for a look at the door of Number 6 - the house she shared with Des and then departs almost in tears, with the final closing shot of her residence.

So farewell then Natalie Barnes, we originally christened you Nastily for breaking up Kev and Sally and you eventually won Des's heart and perhaps ours. You had a somewhat unruly son who caused much distress on the Street. And somehow I am sorry to see you go. However, your personal life is important and I am sure all my readers will join in wishing you well with the baby. And can I express the view that maybe you might come back for Kev one day?

And now a word for Dilys Laye (Isabel Stephens). How do you play a woman suffering a disease of the type she is enduring? It has to be done and having also seen Monday evening's episode I believe she is doing a great job - not an easy part.

See you all next week.
