Saturday 1 January

If Christmas Day was 4740 then this is episode 4745 - the first episode in the year 2000 (no arguments please). Another hour long special and most of the evening revolves around preparations for the Street party. This episode was not built like a normal Corrie episode - instead of reasonable scenes there were a lot of little interplays making the replay a little disjointed. Tonight was sponsored by Cadburys Creme Eggs - so it must be almost Easter. On with the action.

Kev and Danny are assisting with the erection of scaffolding for the awning. Danny apologises for not thinking about Ken and Christmas with the children. He promises to try harder in future. In doing so he says that children should not be split from their parents and this reminds Ken again of Alison in Morecambe. Kev departs for Morecambe with the jewellery he bought some months ago.

Part of the initial action is Hayley making a video of Roy's great moments for posterity and we switch between normal recording and Hayley's video at various points.

At the Quays Linda comes in and Mike insists on discussion. Mike gets told a few home truths - principally that he is going to end up lonely in his old age.

Food is being prepared in Roy's Rolls with a lentil stew simmering. Ashley is given Rudolf meat to turn into a casserole, although he reckons it will cause problems. The Hayley videocam wanders around.

Alma and Audreh are discussing Sergei's departure and Max overhears and then confirms with Ashley that Audreh is not aware of Fred's involvement with the authorities.

The residents commence appearing in fancy dress: Gail & Martin - Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy David - Vampire Sarah Lou - Tyrone - Spaceman Emily - Florence Nightingale Roy - (see later) Spider and Toyah - Adam and Eve Fred - Henry VIII Jim - Long John Silver with parrot on shoulder and crutch under his arm Ashley - Anthony Max - Cleopatra Les - Elvis Curly - Tommy Cooper (just like that) Ken - Sherlock Holmes Blanche - Carmen Miranda Sally and Danny - clowns and perhaps best of all Norris - Viking warrior with horns in helmet, sword - the lot!!

In the street there is a bouncy castle, a roundabout, a raffle at £1 a time being run by Steve (with high overheads) plus other attractions.

Leanne is trying to call off Jez's thieves but a phone call has no impact. Jez turns up and Leanne says call it off. Jez says it is not possible but he points out that Toyah is in severe danger if his loan is not repaid in the manner expected. She runs after Jez into the street but Leanne has not been very friendly. She has to go to his place in an hour's time.

Toyah is told off by Spider for planting a New Year kiss on the outside of Tyrone's helmet. He reminds Toyah that Tyrone has a crush on her and given her history she should know how painful that can be.

Martin phones Rebecca but there is no answer.

G'(when am I going to capable of getting my legover) is ill in the factory with a stomach upset and the other girls who are planning a musical event are short of a replacement. Hayley dashes off to find Dreary who is needed to help "save the world". Ken reminds Dreary that all need to pull together and she agrees to help (luckily the outfit fits).

Martin eventually gets through to the nurses' home but is told that Rebecca is not there.

Leanne turns up at Jez's flat and she is forced into the bedroom by Jez after she is forced to call him gorgeous. (Jane Danson may even be worth the money she is being paid). Jez makes it clear that she is doing it of her own free will - no later misunderstandings (or rape charges). Later Leanne emerges from the bedroom having (she believes) sacrificed herself for the benefit of both Toyah and Natalie. "Is it quits" she asks. "Yes and No" replies Jez. The job should be off but he cannot reach the villains involved - the mobile is off. She attacks him and he alleges it is bad luck - and to phone him on the mobile. She is told to watch out for two odd characters wearing fancy dress.

Martin arrives at Rebecca's room to find she has done a couple of extra hours cover on the ward due to staff shortage. Martin was worried that Gerry may have hurt her. Rebecca tells him to sit down and relax. They have a quick glass of wine. She asks who is he - Stan Laurel although he feels like "Little out of Little and Large". Rebecca responds that that shows how little they know, clearly implying Martin is a big lad (which is presumably what Gail finds so good about him). Rebecca says if she must be anything then it is the "other woman". There is already one marriage on the rocks and he should go.

Vinny is wrapping a present when Natalie comes in. Natalie asks Vinny to a private party once the evening is finished. N departs and Vinny finishes wrapping the present.

Janice, Linda, Hayley and Dreary mount the stage to mime along to "Waterloo". Dreary has been dressed up to match the others and oddly she knows all the moves and all the steps - intensive practice or what? At which point we get the best line of the evening? Blanche - "Is that Deirdre up there?" Ken - "Yes it is" Blanche (who has more fruit on her head than we have in the house) - "What on earth does she look like at her age?" We collapsed completely! But then Les says (with Roy in earshot) "That Cropper couldn't organise a sing song in choir stall". A hungry Max eats some of Ashley's food. She immediately regurgitates the red nose food. Max then reveals to Audreh why Sergei vanished so rapidly and Fred is dragged off to the stocks and locked in. Audreh sponge throwing is extremely accurate and she makes Fred pay.

Kev arrives in Morecambe and knocks on Alison's door. She says hello - no answer and she opens it. "What do you want" she says. "To take you home" is the answer. Her life is in Morecambe - not in Weatherfield. Kev says how sorry he is - it is the start of a new century but he wants the chance to put it right. Alison says sorry implying that she cannot return but her expression makes clear that she is in two minds.

Leanne tells Toyah to stay close to Spider. Vinny grabs and asks where she has been - after all he has missed his break. She is extremely scared at this point.

The four singers are enjoying their moment of success - now they need an agent. Linda goes over to Dreary and congratulates her on doing so well - nice turn around for Linda this. Dreary says she has been known to have her moments - and Linda says that must be why Ken is always so tired. Mike comes in and tells Linda he wants a few words. Linda says she just don't think it will work - it is over.

Les is having difficulty with the entertainment and gets Rita up on stage. As you might expect we then get a great performance - (I have often walked down this Street before - I am on the Street where you live). Norris is moved to tears.

Maaak (Mark) son of Maaak (Mike) arrives in the Rovers and sits down with Maaak (Mike) {ratucs regulars will know about this}. Mike tells him it is over with Linda and then gives him the keys and asks him to pop over to the factory to lock up. No misunderstanding at this point both Linda and Mark know it is over. Mike says Linda really got under his skin.

Fancy dress competitions: Tyrone wins the competition (justly so).

Roy is thanked for a fabulous evening and who is he - why Edmund Arkwright - inventor of the bevelled flange - essential to the cotton industry. Les notices the stocks are empty so he is grabbed by Toyah and Spider and dragged off and locked in! After a while Roy (remembering no doubt the earlier comments) is unable to find the key until long after most people have gone!

Back in Morecambe, Kevin is still trying to change Alison's mind although he is standing by the blue door to her blue room. Alison can't face everyone. Kev wants to look after her - they can move if they need to. Kev says is it fair that they love each other but they are separated. Alison "How do you know I love you". Kev "Because I know you Alison and you do love me - you are the most honest person I ever met and I know I hurt you. A fresh start with the New year and will she marry him?". Alison is beaten and collapses as she admits she loves Kev. She won't marry him yet but she will come back with him. They kiss - as they did on the last New Year when she snogged his face off. Welcome back Alison, may you be with the Street a long time!

Martin returns to the party but Gail ignores his excuses.

Mark wanders into the factory and starts giving Linda a piece of his mind for the poor treatment of Mike. Linda says that if she had really intended to rip off Mike it would have happened - she did have feelings for him. Mark could not possibly understand - anyway he has only just started shaving and she taps him on the cheek. He grabs her wrist and they stare at each other "What are you doing?" says Linda and he responds as a red blooded male and kisses her, she responds. In the background we hear the countdown from 14 to midnight and Ken announces a happy new year.

Audrey forgives Fred and kisses him. Martin kisses Gail. In the factory Linda and Mark are ripping clothes off one another. Toyah gives Tyrone a "proper" kiss and says sorry for before, sadly I think this will make his crush worse. Natalie is looking for Vinny but there is no sign. There are a couple of odd characters outside the Rovers. Mike is heading towards the factory. The crowd are singing "Auld Lang Syne".

Inside the factory clothes are being replaced. In real time this cannot be more than 5 minutes since the new year countdown - Mark must be a speedy little guy. Linda "You are full of surprises". Mark "I don't know what happened?". Linda "Do I need to draw you a diagram - don't they teach you that at school?". Linda and Mark kiss several more times before Mike walks in. Linda refers to a real climax to the celebrations. Mike says the factory means nothing without people to share it with, after all he is hard and ruthless. Both Linda and Mark are very important - they came into his life in the last year. So he wants Mark to be his business partner and Linda a partner in his life. Mike loves Linda and wants her to marry him please.

Outside Rita is leading a community "You'll never walk alone" singalong. Emily is after the profits from the raffle - and she asks for the receipts for the "overheads". Les is still in the stocks.

Hayley says that Roy has achieved wonders organising the evening. Hayley says she loves Roy despite the difficulties - a baby is carried past and no doubt a new storyline is being considered - adoption.

Alison and Kev walk around the corner of the Street and she says she is glad to be back.

Natalie gives Leanne a telling off and Vinny is missing as well. Leanne had better reform. Two figures emerge from the Gents. One grabs Leanne. Leanne starts creating and Vinny outside hears. He cannot get in and Natalie comes downstairs. Leanne gets away from her attacker and makes a run for it - he grabs a baseball bat and hit Leanne over the hear. Vinny breaks down the door, the ruffians escape and he finds Natalie cradling Leanne's head with blood running from her ear.

The Street is empty and we find a blonde figure walking up the ginnel. She raps on a back door. No answer. A firework explodes overhead and Raquel looks up and then knocks again.

Roll the credits.

Well it has certainly been happening down the Street. Two hour long episodes in 8 days on top of the normal contribution.

Alison is back. Sorry to say the execution of this return has been poor in my opinion with Kevin's trips to Morecambe not being high quality. OTOH I am glad Alison is back.

Leanne - this storyline has run a lot faster than it should - the speed of addiction seemed unrealistic, although the monetary sums are probably sensible.

Mike / Linda - well a lovely mess here. Mike should have sorted out the danger signs instead of trying to turn it into a huge joke.

Martin / Gail - is it over - this one will run and run I rather think

Hayley / Roy - will they be allowed to adopt?

Tyrone / Toyah - I wonder if it will ever happen?

And finally Raquel - you will have to wait for Sunday's update ...

Overall some nice lines and Norris as a Viking warrior was a great idea! I think the Street is being pulled a little thin but there was still a lot of emotion in the episode.

Sunday 2 January

This episode is a first for Coronation Street - the entirety (extended to 45 minutes including breaks, about 36 net) - devoted to two characters - Mr and Mrs Watts.

Written by John Stephenson Directed by Brian Mills

We open with the close of the previous episode - Weatherfield in the early hours of New Year's day, the Street deserted and no sign of either police or ambulance at the Rovers. Raquel (R) knocks on Curly's backdoor. Curly (C) thinks that it people playing a prank but after the second knock he opens it to find R. She smiles - "Hello Curly - its me - is it inconvenient? Can I come in then?"

R - I just thought I would call in? C - At two o'clock in the morning - you are not just passing by!

Curly is totally bemused as they exchange pleasantries before moving into the unchanged sitting room to sit down. We get a full length shot of R - wearing an expensive attractive well tailored suit under a heavy coat and scarf.

C admits there has been no-one since R left and he compliments R on her new hairstyle before asking why she has comeback? Has she come back to him? R - "It is a lot more complicated than that". C - "So you want a divorce then?" {BTW - the answer is yes to that question just to ease the suspense slightly}. R asks if she may sit - C replies, already close to losing his temper says she can do anything she wishes - after all she always did.

R is looking distinctly uncomfortable as she sits opens her handbag and takes out a framed picture which she passes to C - a picture of their daughter - Alice Diana Watts, Diana after Princess Diana. Curly takes some convincing of his fatherhood. R did not know she was pregnant when she left. C's voice is raised as he agrees to an explanation.

R went to Kuala Lumpur and settled into the job before discovering she was pregnant. R was never unfaithful and she admits it was wrong not to tell C about the baby. But if she had he would have done just what Ken has just done and brought R back to Weatherfield - and she just did not want that. C is distressed at not knowing about the child - he had always wanted children with R. Curly calls Raquel a "user for her own selfish purposes". She rushes upstairs to the bathroom. C takes a drink and then sits and stares at the photograph and smiles.

R emerges from the bathroom and enters the bedroom. She finds it as she left it - pictures of them on their wedding day (I think) her bathrobe hanging on the door - evidence everywhere of C's love for her.

Downstairs C is still staring at the photo and immediately apologises for the hard things he said. R wants to try and explain to him. She tells the story that as a visitor to Kuala Lumpur she was in difficulties and she could not return to Weatherfield because she would be unhappy, even if she hid it, he would know and he would be unhappy and they would split up and it would be worse for the child than if they were not together. So she knew she had to go it alone. And where is Alice Diana - R responds at home - a long way from here, well looked after and not in care or adopted.

When the baby was due in July '97 R returned to her sister, Bernice, in London who works at a teaching hospital where Alice was born. "23/7/97 6lbs 4.5oz - Leo on the cusp, interesting" relates R showing another photo of the baby shortly after being born. C says he wished he could have been there to hold the baby. R - "It has been on my conscience - I have told Alice all about you - I have told her a lot about you". R told her about the star named Mrs Raquel Watts, a lovely present from a very nice man.

They go up to the loft to look at the star. It reminds C of how insignificant we are in the context of the universe and the age of the light reaching earth. R is glad that she has finally told C. C is glad that she is there as well. C wants to look forward to a future with R.

We enter the break with a reminder that tonight is sponsored by Cadburys.

They come downstairs and C offers R some tea and they decide on a glass of wine. C has a bottle of red wine waiting for a special event. {Sadly red wine tonight is not working}. R spots the washing up and sets about the sinkful waiting. There are no marigolds - C does not use them. C asks if this was the only reason for the visit - he offers a new start based around Alice, after all he still loves R and they are still married - can they try again? R says they have both changed and although she loves him it is not enough - there is some else who wants to marry her. Curly is instantly downcast.

The phone rings and R insists he answers it - it may be for her. The call, from a foreign man, is for her. "Armand" she says and continues in French to reassure him that all is well and she will not be too long (thinks I hope I got the translation about right). C wants to know how she can speak French so well and this is the "some one else". She has been working for him for two years and he is rich. C calls her a kept woman and again loses his temper and tells her to walk out the front door the same as she did last time as he slams into the kitchen and tosses down the glass of wine. He is instantly repentant and she takes off her coat and asks for more information.

A lengthy near monologue ensues from Raquel. Bernice was working on a cancer ward and a French lady (Elliday or similar) was under a specialist - last chance of treatment but it was not working. She was terribly worried about her two children and how they would be looked after once she was gone. Bernice effected an introduction and it was agreed that R should become the children's nanny which was what she has been doing for the last 2.5 years. Armand took her back to France with the children and his wife. The wife wasted away - an awful period and Armand was heartbroken and he could not bear the children thinking that they were responsible.

C then guesses at events - Armand de Bouw (?) recovers, looks around and decides to stop grieving and start groping the nanny would be a good idea. R corrects him - she is proud that she managed to rebuild his life and get him to love his children again - she merely pitied him for a long time, but then it turned to love. C asks for one good reason why he should divorce her.

Raquel appears prepared for this moment and has more than one reason: a) because he is a good man b) he still cares about her c) he would want her to be happy even if its not with her

Curly is crying as he tells her that no-one would love her as much as him. Raquel knows that Armand will never love her as much as Elliday, but she does not love Curly enough in the right way. He must accept it and get on with his life. She wants Curly to let her go but also to give her his blessing.

He suggests that it amounts to him giving her away at the second wedding. She agrees - but it need only be in private between the two of them.

Armand is aged 48, lives in the Loire - R - a big river in France. he is a wine grower with a chateau. C almost hates him - he is rich, he grows wine, owns a chateau and he has Raquel. Raquel says that Curly could not hate anyone and anyway it is not a very large chateau, it is a proper chateau "detached and everything" you know. {Possibly the best line of the evening - typical airhead Raquel returns to the fore briefly}. Both Curly and Raquel start laughing. C agrees to the divorce whenever she wants.

The marriage is more for Armand than her - after all the baby needs to be born into wedlock for inheritance reasons, especially if it is a boy. C acknowledges that one of them is living a full and fertile life - which is better than neither of them.

The scene moves on several hours. R has cooked some omelettes and threatens to call any boy Norman. C says that would be extremely unfair - after all he hates the name enormously (earlier he had told R not to use it). C reminds her of the wine and she takes the French approach - a glass of wine is good for the mother to be. She instantly enthuses over the excellent grapes and C also notes that she has learnt to cook.

C suggests that she is trying to hide her origins by living abroad. R denies it - she can be herself in France. As outsiders we know that both are right.

R prepares to depart - she will be on the lunchtime flight to France to get back to her family. C asks if he can keep the photo. C asks after her eyesight - there are no problems says R {can someone tell me why he asked this? I know Curly wears glasses but is this being left in as a hook for a future story - in the right place I can tell a story about this, but this is not the right place}.

C says that he can lose Raquel from his life but cannot lose Alice. R says that she and Armand want him to come over as often as possible and later she can come to Weatherfield. Even stay at the chateau? Yes. Armand will not adopt Alice - she will always be Alice Watts.

R says that C must get on with his life - stop wanting R and find a woman who loves him the way he deserves to be loved. They will always be Alice's parents but nothing else. He wants a woman who will tear his clothes off - nice does not come into it. R - You will be a wonderful catch for someone and she kisses him one last time.

She leaves by the back door. C will visit the chateau at Easter - nice weather for taking Alice out - he will be welcome before if he cannot wait.

R - "And I nearly forgot - Happy New Year, Happy New Life".

C is worried that Armand will be concerned and promises that he will seek to change his life. As R walks away with tears in her eyes C asks her to kiss Alice for him.

The final shot is of Curly thinking about his past and his future.

So - well disappointing, sorry to say. Four people involved tonight and only one do I absolve from blame. Sarah Lancashire parachuting back into an old role was very good - she has moved on and returned as grown up version of her prior existence. Sadly I think Kevin Kennedy was very poor and I don't know if I should blame the script - Kevin's script was un-redeeming and his delivery swung far too quickly from anger to forgiveness and that could be the fault of the director. I think he was just a little too edgy and should have been a little smoother.

Watching it a second time perhaps I was more moved than the first time (he wrote, mopping up the tears). Sadly not a great episode for the Street and somehow I wonder if we shall ever see another two hander.

Given that this episode was probably unique I shall not award a rating as it cannot be judged alongside normal events.

Monday 3 January

This episode was written by John Stevenson, directed by Michael Kerrigan and sponsored by Cadbury's Creme Egg.

In the aftermath of the attempted robbery at the Rovers, Les, Janice and Natalie spend an anxious night at the hospital while Leanne undergoes X rays and scans. Eventually she regains consciousness and they are told that she has concussion and will need to stay under observation for a few days, but there is no serious damage. Natalie regards Leanne as a hero, since no money was taken; a situation which Les will milk for all it is worth. Natalie is of course unaware of the true circumstances surrounding the raid. Later Leanne is visited by Toyah, and says she didn't see who the raiders were. Jez is also seen lurking around the hospital waiting for Leanne's visitors to leave.

DC Gough, (a policeman with a deeply suspicious accent) goes to the Rovers to interview Natalie and Vinny, having been told by the doctor that they cannot speak to Leanne until the following day. Vinny's secret comes out, as he has to account for his movements the previous evening. He gives the name and address of a woman in Salford, Pauline Scott. Natalie rounds on him when they are alone and accuses him of two-timing her. She guesses that he was there at Christmas as well. Vinny explains that he has a daughter by the woman, and New Year's Eve was the girl, Lisa's, 18th birthday. Natalie is stunned but angry that he didn't say anything. His lame excuse was that it might have put her off him. Natalie makes it clear that she is even more put off by surprises like that.

Alison seems happy with Kevin, but doesn't want anyone to know she is pregnant at the moment. They make plans to move somewhere more suitable for the baby. They tell Sally that Alison has returned permanently, and also that Alison is anxious about gossip, but Sally says she hasn't said anything. Sally invites them in to see the gurls.

Gail apologises to Martin for her behaviour over the last few months. She wants to really try to make a go of it. Before Martin has to make a reply, Sarah-Louise bursts in to tell them the news about the robbery which she overheard in the street.

Blanche: (This is deeply cringeworthy, so I'll just give you the bare bones) Blanche plays idiotic games with Ken and Dreary; first she says that her flat in Kenilworth is on the market and she has a buyer. Ken and Dreary are horrified that Blanche intends to live with them permanently; Blanche maintains that she told them all about it, but they don't listen to anything she says. ater she says she intends to return home the next day, halt the sale and resume her life of loneliness and isolation. Dreary feels suitably manipulated and says she gives in - Blanche can stay with them. Remembering that it is actually Ken's house, she checks with him. Ken has no option but to tell Blanche she is welcome to stay.

Mike is waiting to find out Linda's response to his marriage proposal. She tells him she has a lot to think about and needs time to consider. Mark is appaled she is even considering it after what happened between them. Linda tells him to stop behaving like a little boy, and that it meant nothing. She reminds him that at the time it happened, her and Mike had fallen out anyway. In any case, it changes nothing, and Mark has no right to interfere in her decision. Mark threatens to tell Mike what a slag she is, but Linda assures him that if he did, his partnership in the business would be in more danger than her position with Mike. Mike is unconcerned about the delay as he is confident she will accept; as he tells Mark, Linda knows which side her bread's buttered. Mike wants Mark to take over the day-to-day running of the factory from him. Linda decides to return to Nita's in order to think everything over, and tells Mike he will have to be patient for a bit longer yet. Mark is seething.

Update written by Helen Johns.

Quite a good episode, with several of the storylines moving on. The revelations about Vinny, and the way it came out, was good. We knew there was something going on there. Blanch seems to be established as a permanent fixture in the Street, which I regard as a good thing, even if I do want to give her (the character) a piece of my mind, or at least for Ken to! Leanne should clearly be afraid, very afraid, since she has not now cleared her debts, and no doubt Jez will persuade her that it is in her interests to keep quiet about what happened.

Sunday 9 January

Written by Martin Allen Directed by Garth Tucker

Sponsored by Cadburys Creme Eggs. All events are the copyright property of ITV Television whom I hope will not take any objection to this report.

The episode open at the Battersbys where Les is decrying the name of Jez Quigly whom he has discovered from Steve McDonald is in some way responsible for Leanne's condition (BTW are we certain that safe sex was involved?). Evidence against Jez is limited but Les is still going to look for Jez and sort him out.

At Weatherfield Quays, Mike, Linda and Mark are describing their intended activities for the day ahead. Linda invites Mike to scrub her back in the bath and then to join her in bed all afternoon. The scene ends with Mark revealing (in answer to a question of Mike's) that he would never mess with his favourite things - he's not that stupid.

In the Kabin (no I don't understand the changes yet) Rita is serving Gary who seeing Kevin congratulates him on the return of Alison and asks if she has a job. Indeed perhaps she would be interested in minding the twins, he is trying a council nursery but has heard nothing yet. Kevin is unsure and says he will ask her later on. Mike enters and Rita congratulates him on the news.

Leanne comes down the stairs and asks to return to work. Natalie (wearing sleeves on this outfit but giving an airing to certain other assets to keep the skin count high) says she must rest for another day - it is not good to rush back too quickly. {Jane Danson is looking very trim at present}. The job advert has not yet generated any enquiries. Les comes in and tries to get more information from Leanne. She denies that Jez was responsible but Les says he will find him.

Family harmony at the Platts as Sarah Lou and David want to go ten-pin bowling but Martin is saying that with the Christmas bill rolling in he cannot afford the £30 involved (I know just how he feels). After a compromise discussion with Gail smiling broadly throughout it is agreed that they will go ice skating (is that really cheaper than bowling?).

In the Rovers Les and Janice are discussing Jez and Les is still seeking to sort him out. Les is going to spend the rest of the day looking for him. Alison is admiring Linda's fourth finger and attached ring. Linda confirms that Alison may return to "Underworld". The ring was acquired in a very exclusive jewellers. Kev's at the bar with Jim. Jim is worried that he has simply forgotten how to behave with a woman. Kev returns to Alison and tells her about Gary's request. Too late - she is going back to the factory. Kev senses that Alison is unhappy about something - he is not sure of the cause though. Alison is pleased that he was willing to pass on information about a job involving children - the past is forgotten.

Tyrone is studying a car magazine in the Kabin (have his reading skills improved that much already - it took Niamh far longer in Brookside?). A real "filler" scene this one.

Back at the Rovers Janice (looking as though she has been eating well recently) comes out from seeing Leanne, asking Natalie to make sure she recovers properly. Janice then confides to G'(well I am seeing Jim tonight so I might get my legover) that Les is on a personal missin of retribution and she is worried.

Les walks into a strange pub and asks the barman if he knows Jez. It turns out that he does and he does not want Jez or his friends around the place. He almost picks Les up and then throws him out, clearly thinking that Les is another one of Jez's regular customers. He warns Les not to return.

At the Rovers Mike is buying two bottles of champagne so that everyone can share in the joy of his engagement. Blanche arrives to participate - she had heard there was a celebration. Fred - "Well what does it look like we are doing - committing mass suicide?" as the champers appears on the bar. Blanche - "He's not even divorced yet!" Rita grabs Blanche and pulls her off to sit elsewhere! Kev points out to Alison that engagement has made Linda happy. Mark arrives with Claire Machin - a student he met the previous evening.

Jim is extracting "Coq au vin extraordinaire" from the oven - as he says chicken casserole really. Jim has a memorial of his paraplegic days which G'(when can I get my legover - or perhaps he is not capable) notices and the accident is mentioned together with the final departure of Liz, although far from the full story and with no mention of Jim's violence. Jim pours some white wine which looks exactly like water - obviously G'(well no chance tonight) is out of luck.

Mark is telling Mike about Claire who is an economics student. Linda is also sussing out the competition - she wants to go into management once she has acquired her degree, but she will eventually want children. Linda replays the last piece of information to Mark "hoping that he is interested in a family". A nice wind-up. This three way interplay is starting to inject a nice edge into the characters. Mark instantly responds that he would not want to turn Linda into a grandmother just yet - score 1 all I reckon.

Kev tells Gary that Alison cannot help - and there is something bugging her. Gary tells Kev to ask her to marry him again.

Blanche wishes Linda well and then says she has been trying to remember how many Mrs Baldwins there have been and of course Deirdre was involved with him once. After all he was younger and much better looking in those days. (BTW Is the correct answer only two Mrs Baldwins? The one prior to Alma was very attractive as I recall).

G(when will he get his act together) is talking about her son who is now in the Army himself. She discloses her ex-husband hit her. This shatters the already fragile atmosphere as Jim starts to recall his own brutal behaviour.

Martin and Gail are discussing the poor display of the former - falling over 15 times - but then Gail is twinkletoes. Both are in good humour and agree to do it again.

Mark and Claire depart. Fred and Mike exchange the view that he will try anything in a skirt at present!

Les arrives back chez Battersby intact (which is probably a miracle). he recounts his day. Jez is scum it appears.

Kev is rooting around in the cupboard and asks Alison if she is serious about co-habitation and having his baby. Finally he asks and she answers - "Yes". They hug. Now they can announce both engagement and the baby to everyone. Huge relief.

Back to the chicken burger house. Gwen (Loveday remember) feels she was to blame for the violence. On the whole she is glad she has told him. Jim changes and even though it is only 22:05 effectively throws her out and not even a kiss passes between them. Gwen has no idea what is wrong. The closing shot is of Jim thinking probably of both Gwen's suffering and that which he inflicted on Liz.

Well not a great episode - although the Street cannot hit highlights every time. Two engagements in a couple of weeks. Mark and Linda are clearly each getting the measure of the other and Fred and Blanche's tongues continues to entertain (not each other thank goodness).

Monday 10 January

Jim tells Steve he is worried that Gwen will not go out with him if he tells her that he hit Liz. Steve advises Jim that he should explain it himself, even if he risks losing her. Jim bitterly regrets his treatment of Liz. Gwen tells Janice about Jim's abrupt change of mood the other day, and Janice reckons he lost his nerve because of the damage done 'down below' by his accident. Gwen feels sure it is more than that, and decides to go and confront Jim. He is flustered and begins a disjointed explanation, referring to Gwen's violent marriage. Even so, it seems to take a remarkably long time for it to dawn on her that he is trying to tell her he hit his wife. She becomes upset and angry, and though Jim stresses he is nothing like her husband, who hit her repeatedly, since he did it only once, Gwen spits out that once is once too often. It took her a long time to leave one violent relationship - she is not about to enter another one.

Trade at Roy's Rolls is benefitting from the builders working on the new development. Unfortunately, poor Roy is worried that food outlets are bound to be among them - a cafe-bar, something ethnic, Thai or Vietnamese for instance. Hayley cheerfully tells him not to worry.

Kevin and Alison decide they will tell Sally their news before making it public. Sally is pleased on hearing of their engagement, but when Alison tells her about the baby she seems deflated. Later Sally confides to Gail that she is convinced Kevin won't have time for Rosie and Sophie when he has his new family - particularly if it is a boy. Gail is sure Sally is wrong; Kevin has always been a good father. Sally remains miserable. The factory girls celebrate the news of the engagement, although Linda can't resist teasing Alison, asking whether the christening will come before the wedding.

Leanne returns to duty in the bar, and Natalie is very supportive. Les feels that Leanne's not being straight with him, and decides to go off to investigate. Fred effusively praises Leanne's courage, and later Gail congratulates her as well. It all gets too much for Leanne and she rushes out into the back. Natalie is confused as Leanne sobs how sorry she is, then incredulous as Leanne admits to knowing about the robbery before, as she was involved. Bit by bit the story comes out; Natalie's voice takes on a hard edge as she quizzes Leanne about how she got into so much debt. Leanne cries as Natalie establishes that the money was for drugs. Memories of Tony come flooding back for Natalie and she harshly orders Leanne to get out. Once alone, she looks hurt and disappointed.

In the corner shop, Dev is unimpressed by Vik's late start and attitude. An attractive young woman enters the shop and greets Dev. He sends Vik out on a break and demands to know why she is there. Evidently she would like to talk, but he makes it clear he does not want anything to do with her. She persists and Dev becomes aggressive, grabbling her by the wrists and bundling her out on the pavement. Later, Vik fishes for information but Dev is surly and refuses to talk. Vik assumes that she is an ex-girlfriend who Dev has dumped and does not want to get back together with.

Martin discusses with Rebecca when they can be together again. He has already told Gail he might do some overtime, but David has a football match. Rebecca realises things are difficult for him, and seems happy to fit in with whatever Martin wants.

Norris sees the mystery woman crying near her car. He persuades her to go to the Rovers with him and cheers her up. Although Norris hints that he would be happy for her to confide in him, she doesn't share her problems with him. After he has returned to the Kabin, she goes to the bar and introduces herself to Natalie. She is called Amy Goskirke, and she would like to apply for the bar job advertised in the shop. She says she is from Birmingham and has worked in city centre bars as well as a village pub. Since it is so busy, Natalie gives her an immediate try-out.

Vinny is pleased that Natalie has taken Amy on, as he has been trying to persuade Natalie to take a holiday. Natalie is reluctant, so soon after the break-in, but Vinny recognises what a strain it has been and would like them both to have a break. Amy has returned home to sort things out and will return on Wednesday, so Natalie will think about the holiday.

Update written by Helen Johns

A good episode, with lots of interesting stories bubbling along keeping us eager for the next instalment. It's perhaps unfair to single out individuals, but tremendous acting from Jane Danson and Denise Welch again tonight. Such consistent performances sustained over years are what makes this show so special.

Written by Julie Geary Directed by Graham Wetherell

The episode opens at the Rovers as Janice backed up by Toyah come into find out about Leanne and to wish her luck as she is attending the counselling session which has been arranged - another speedy execution by someone! Leanne makes it clear she is not looking forward to this meeting which is responsible for much of this episode. Leanne reveals that Natalie knows about the events. Janice is unhappy but Leanne asks her nicely to accompany her.

Mike, Linda and Mark arrive outside Underworld. Linda is filing and making the coffee for the day (it is Saturday) while Mike does some work. Mark reveals that he is visiting estate agents to find a flat, apparently he decided to do this over the New Year but had forgotten to mention it until now! He denies that it is anything to do with Linda. Her cooking is not that bad says Mike.

Amy has a visitor at the B&B - Dev arrives and he asks if she is really pregnant - after all she was on the pill. "Accidents happen" anyway they are both young and fertile. Dev implies that she has previously made up odd stories and he wonders if this is another one - she has a fertile imagination. Dev calls her certifiable. She says the facts are simple - pregnant and it is his. Later Amy confides in Vera - she tells Vera that she and Dev are engaged but the families do not and cannot know. It must be kept secret.

Over at Roy's Rolls Jim and Gwen arrive with healthy appetites to sate (apparently the fridge was empty at the McDonalds), caused by excessive Ugandan discussions during the night. G'(when - every night now) and Jim have clearly had a great night! G'(well I am happy) notices that Alison is hardly eating anything - after all she has two to cater for, but Alison responds that she does not want to put on too much weight before the wedding, which is to be a small affair. Registrar offices next Monday morning. Gwen says that her specialist subject is affairs of the heart.

At the counsellor Janice is there in support of Leanne and waits as she goes in to meet the counsellor. Leanne thanks her. Janice reckons most people in the clinic are "dead normal". Leanne just wants to run out of the door - she is not addicted she should not be there. She is called in.

Reminder - tonight was sponsored by Cadbury's Marble and the entire content is the property and copyright of ITV Television and as usual many thanks for the Street!

Leanne dislikes the entire environment and virtually refuses to speak to the counsellor who just wants an informal chat. There are long periods of silence. He keeps trying to probe her reasons for drug taking and for being there at all - as she says it is simply to keep her job. Identifying her reluctance he offers an alternative of group counselling and opens his briefcase where she spots a pack of (Silk Cut, I think) cigarettes. Instantly she points out that he, like Les and his booze, has a drug addiction and he is no position to preach. Leanne storms out. The counsellor catches up with her and Janice in the corridor. He has a further word with Leanne. "First sessions are never easy - emotions are strong and it is easy to hide from the facts. He asks her to remember her statements - she claims she is not addicted and that she does not need drugs - the next time she is thinking of having a line.

At the Rovers Mark and Tom are looking at flat ads in the paper when Fred looms over them and on finding out the reason for the search points out that Sharon's flat over the Kabin is empty. {Query - who owns the flat - Alec Gilroy owned it at one stage (after Reg Holdsworth) but I don't think Sharon bought it as I believe it was rented to Sharon - is it still Alec's or did Rita buy it at some stage?}. Fred moves to the bar and asks where Natalie might be. Tunisia is the response from Vera. So Vinny is in charge then? asks Fred. No it is Jim who is in charge so it is. So where is Vinny? Well he and Natalie are sharing a sun lounger if you want the full details. Fred takes a shine to Amy.

At the Kabin Norris tries to guess why Mark arrives. He is wrong. Norris is reluctant to show him around but agrees after discussion - after all it would save Rita the agency fees and save on others trekking through. Norris and Mark inspect the flat and Norris spots a red wine stain on the floor. Norris hopes that Mark will not be a noisy tenant. It looks as though he will be moving onto the Street. Later Mark points out to Mike and Linda that it has a double bed and is convenient and cheap. Linda is looking forward to his departure.

Kev and Alison are discussing the wedding. Alison turns down the big day - it is just about them and she does not want to be a meringue - just a quiet ceremony and emerging as Mrs Webster.

Maxine and Tom enter the pub and find Tom's father present. They sit down for a chat. Tom is obviously finding it difficult but relations are thawing as he accepts a drink. Vik is in the Rovers and asks Amy why she has followed Dev from Birmingham. The little madam (and at the moment I have to say that the physical attraction she provides is outweighed by the psychotic mind which appears to lie behind the face) implies to Vik that Dev has an addictive personality - a problem with women - numerous women, too many to mention, women.

Jim gives Gwen his number at the Rovers as he will not be at home much over the next few days and by the way he has not got her number. She kisses him and says she will give it to him later. Jim looks confused as she dashes off. {So just what is G'(well I've got a little secret) dashing off to?}

Janice and Leanne return to the Rovers and Janice says she wants Leanne off drugs - she has loved her since she first met Les and does not like the way she has turned out. Janice does not blame her and they cuddle. Later Leanne is in the back of the Rovers with one last foil wrapped "hit". She is unwrapping it when Jim sticks his head through the door and asks for urgent help. She crushes it in her hand and walks into the bar. She looks at it and then drops it into the bin, puts on a big smile, walks to the counter and says "Hiya What can I get you?".

So is this the end of the drugs storyline or not?

What is Gwen's secret - is she cohabiting already?

Will this Webster marriage go smoothly?

What will Rita think of Mark as a tenant?

Is Amy disturbed or pregnant? I am with Dev on this one (so probably wrong).

Not a great episode but then life has its highs and lows. Jane Danson still strikes me as doing a great job with her story. We moved along nicely this evening and we are in for a few twists and turns no doubt!

Have a good week and I should be back next Sunday without the interruptions - did anyone see Jilting Joe - a rather nice film this evening which delayed writing the update!

Monday 17 January

The builders' foreman is horrified to be charged £37.42 for his breakfast - and realises all his labourers have told Roy that the boss will pay for their breakfasts. He promises Roy that they will pay later, and from now on they must all buy their own food. Duggie later brings Roy the details of what all the builders want for breakfast in future. Roy tries to find out from Duggie whether there will be food outlets in the new shops, but Duggie isn't letting on.

Janice tells Toyah she's failed Leanne as a mother and Leanne should have been able to come to her when things went wrong. Janice is afraid that if Leanne gives up on the counselling she will lose her job and slip back into drugs. Toyah speaks to Leanne, who flatly refuses to go back to the counsellor. Toyah tells Leanne how worried her family are about her. The only thing Leanne is going to the hospital for is to have her follow-up for her head injury from the robbery.

Vik tries to wind Dev up about his womanising. Dev denies everything and says Amy's imagination is working overtime. He goes into the Rovers and warns Amy to stop her behaviour. Jim sees Amy is upset and later asks what is wrong. She tells Jim that she was engaged to Dev but it is now off. When Leanne returns from the hospital Amy confides in her that she is having Dev's baby. Amy is really pleased and can't wait to be a mum - if only Dev hadn't got cold feet and cancelled their wedding, which was to have been on 14th February - Valentine's Day. She hopes, however, that the baby will bring them closer. Leanne is distinctly unimpressed, and says in her opinion babies can just as easily drive people apart. Babies need a stable family, and if they are not both ready for that they might as well forget it instead of storing up a lifetime of problems. Amy also tells Leanne that she hasn't had a mum to help her as both her parents died in a boating accident.

Mark arranges with the estate agent to take over the flat above the Kabin. Tom helps him to move in later that day. Linda makes no secret of the fact she will be glad to have some privacy with Mike. Mark counters with the observation that he and Claire will appreciate some space as well. Mike thanks Linda for her tolerance of Mark. Duggie tells Tom that he is thinking of taking one of the business units himself. Tom remains surly.

Kevin and Alison are excited about the wedding preparations. They arrange it for Saturday at the register office with a party at the Rovers afterwards. Linda and Jim are to be the witnesses. Gwen admits to Jim that her phone has been disconnected. He gives her £70 to get it sorted out. Kevin asks Sally if she and Danny will come to the reception at the Rovers. He says the baby is due in June. Sally says she is happy for them but Kevin senses she has reservations. He reassures her having a new wife and child will not get in the way of his relationship with Rosie and Sophie. He asks if she is alright about it and she says she is but still looks as if she has chewed a lemon.

Martin cuddles Rebecca in a corridor at the hospital. Unfortunately, Leanne's there to have her head check-up. Martin's convinced that she's seen them.

Toyah and Janice call to see how Leanne got on at the hospital. They are concerned when Leanne starts crying and saying she is sorry. Leanne sobs that she realises she has been horrible to all of them and wonders why have a family if you turn your back on them when in trouble. She promises to try again with the counsellor. Janice is very proud, and says she is sure Les will get back on speaking terms with Leanne eventually. Martin finally collars Leanne and asks her how she got on at the hospital. She distractedly tells him her head is fine and why didn't he speak to her if he saw her there? Martin is so relieved that she didn't see him and Rebecca that he buys her a drink to toast her health.

Amy goes to see Dev and asks him if they can sort things out - for the sake of the baby. Dev replies 'For the sake of the baby ... I will marry you.' As Amy does a little dance of delight he reveals that there is one condition; Amy must prove the baby exists.

Update written by Helen Johns

A normal bread and butter episode in some ways. Amy begins casting her net of lies wider as she tells more people her story. This girl is Carmel revisited - her stories certainly sound preposterous. (Or maybe I'm biased - I have to admit to a soft spot for Dev and don't like to see him tormented by this manipulative little minx. 'I wouldn't kick him out of bed' as my mate Carol used to say!) Once again, Jane Danson as Leanne gives us a believable portrayal of an unhappy, confused young woman. Not much overt humour tonight, but Roy being at the same time grateful for the extra business and fearful of the impending competition provided a little light relief. A small hint of things to come (?), as Kevin realises that Sally might have mixed feelings about his forthcoming wedding to Alison.

Sunday 23 January

For those interested in Maud's whereabouts her alter ego is currently playing a small walk on part in "Lady in a Van" an Alan Bennett play starring Dame Maggie Smith at the Queens Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, as witnessed on Saturday afternoon by myself. {I hope this proves I am not totally soap addicted}.

Anyway over in Weatherfield it is time for another wedding and I think it must be Saturday. Friday night you will recall that Kev and Sal shared a bottle of wine and my youngest daughter (9) (who is blind) asked what colour is the wine? On my answering red she immediately deduced that the inevitable result was (as she spelt it out) S - E - X.

Written by Ken Blakeson Directed by Tony Prescott

We open chez Webster flat with Kev awake and Alison worried about his lack of sleep. He claims nerves and that it is a big step. We know he is worrying about Sal.

At the other Webster residence an excited Rursie (with a new face) is dressing herself and Surphie in their bridesmaids' clothes. Sal tells her off and then calms down - after explaining the baby will be either a half brother or half sister she sends them off to wash their hands before breakfast.

Linda is helping Alison prepare - by getting her to wear "glittery" make up. Alison protests the unsuitability and it is removed. Kev goes for a walk (to check on Jim). Linda tells him to be sure to return.

At the Rovers Leanne seeks to ensure Amy does not bow to pressure for an abortion and the latter guesses that Leanne has suffered. Leanne fills in some of the story - Amy must make the decision not be forced into one. (I assume Amy was supposed to be the new sex kitten on the block, trouble is she is at least several sandwiches short of a full picnic).

Kev meets Danny coming out the Webster house. He goes in and Sal is ironing the bridesmaids clothes. Sal says last night was a one off and that it meant nothing - they got carried away - his life was with Alison and hers is with Danny. Sal reminds Ken he loves Alison and she must not find out about last night. He departs with gurls watching over the bannister.

Cadbury's Miniature Heroes are responsible for the action tonight. All original content is the property of ITV TV and I thank them for continuing to bring the Street to our screens (and I am looking forward to Natalie's sister arriving).

Kev has his best suit on. Jim arrives with Rursie and Surphie and Sal compliments Alison on looking good. Jim takes pictures of bride and gurls and then another including Kev. Sal asks Kev if he is OK and tells them not to keep anyone waiting as the taxi arrives.

Elsewhere on the Street Steve McD is trying to sort out his problems. He has Pat Hegherty the builder in Roy's Rolls trying to convince him to work for Steve on Duggie Ferguson's development. They go to look at the site. Later at the Rovers Pat is tempted but knowing Steve's position is weak (he cannot get credit at any trade outlet) he only agrees to participate as a full partner and with no funny business from Steve. 50% each and Steve is to play it honest with Duggie. Steve shakes hands on the deal.

Vera arrives to find out what happened to Amy (she stayed over at the Rovers). Leanne tells motor mouth Vera about the baby, the abortion, Amy and Dev. Amy breaks down and Vera takes her through to the back.

Sal has a cup of tea with Gail at Roy's Rolls and on promise of non- repetition (some hope there) Sally tells Gail what happened last night. Sally says it was simply history and Gail says she has nothing to worry about.

At the Registry Office the wedding party is waiting its turn when Janice, Tyrone, Hayley and Gwen arrive to join the celebration. The party all go in but Kev holds Alison back. He wants to say something. He really wants to say it is all off. He tries, he honestly tries and it comes out as "You look beautiful", she responds with "I want you to know how lucky I am".

Duggie tries to buy his son, Tom, a drink. He refuses. Amy re-appears in the bar and Leanne says she can stay again tonight. Tom is playing the fruit machine and Crusher tries again to build bridges but gets nowhere.

Kevin John Webster and Alison Rosemary Wakefield exchange vows. Linda is wearing the sourest face imaginable - she should have been smiling throughout. They are pronounced man and wife and kiss.

At the Corner Shop Dev appears complaining about VAT and his accountant. Vik says he has already heard about the baby and abortion (news travels fast in Weatherfield). Dev is fed up with her behaviour and decides to face her out. Vik tries to deter him from instant action but Dev is concerned about his name.

At the Rovers the honeymoon destination is revealed (the Lake District) and it is reckoned they can find ways of keeping warm (Alison should check that out with Sally I suppose). Alison gives the gurls presents and Sally wishes them well. Alison is pleased to know they can all be friends. (I wonder if Danny fancies Alison - we can get a foursome going?). Are the gurls allowed in the pub - after all it is normal opening hours? Later before he departs Sally tells Kevin that she believes that Alison will be a smashing wife for him.

Ferguson snr agrees to check out Pat H's references and give consideration to Steve and Pat taking over the work. For once Steve keeps to the agreed line with no bullshit - is he finally growing up? They set up a meeting for Monday to sort the details.

Alison and Kev are about to depart when Dev arrives at the Rovers. He lays into Amy asking her to tell the truth. She puts her side out loud and Jim immediately interrupts and points out that a wedding is in progress. Dev wants a chance to answer the slurs Amy is putting about, but Jim is insistent. Dev tells Amy it either stops or she hears from his solicitor and he departs.

Alison and Kev depart and the closing shot is of Sally looking deeply unhappy, realising that what ever she might feel Kev is no longer available to her.

A low key wedding with generally nice performances by all concerned with Ken and Sally having their hidden secret and Alison being a great bride. None of the problems suffered by Hayley and Roy!

Nothing special this evening as "Crazy Spice" kept peddling her nonsense and the other storylines were moved along. Is Steve finally becoming responsible?

And finally to whom will Gail let slip the great secret? Surely not Audreh?

A lowish mark tonight - no great lines but also no Norris (which always lifts the mark). So 2 out of 5.

Monday 24 January

Amy has still got Leanne and Jim on her side after the public slanging match with Dev the previous night. Jim is all for going over to the shop and sorting him out, but Amy asks him to stay out of it. Amy herself goes into the shop, where unknown to her, Nita is in the back room listening to them. Amy begins by talking quietly to Dev, but then Jim come in and Amy starts wailing and accusing Dev of shouting unreasonably at her. Jim naturally takes Amy's side and warns Dev off. Nita emerges afterwards and is sympathetic to Dev's situation. Later, Nita goes into the Rovers and tells Amy that she isn't fooled by the acting display, and Amy should watch out. Amy cries a lot and is incapable of doing the job - which Jim isn't pleased about at all since he is supposed to be keeping an eye on the garage as well. Later that night, Les tells Amy to cheer up, which must have been the final straw as she walks out. In the street, Amy prepares to get into her car and Dev appears. He is concerned that she is going to drive in her upset state, and also asks if she has been drinking. Amy replies flatly that it doesn't matter now, gets in her car and drives away.

Steve gets dressed up in a very sharp suit for his and Pat's meeting with Duggie. They meet in Roy's Rolls and Duggie is impressed with their preparation. They get the contract after showing him a list of the men they intend to take on for the job. Drinks all round - on Steve - in the pub later. Jim is proud of his son.

Gail lends a sympathetic ear to whining Sally - who was scared Kevin would have said something to Alison and ruined the wedding. Gail tells her to pull herself together and get on with life and make a future with Danny. [Or words to that effect - H]

Toyah is concerned at the effect all the fuss about Amy is having on Leanne. Unsurprisingly, Leanne says it helps take her mind off things, being a useful support to Amy. She says the counselling is going OK and she is glad to be sticking at it. Les is really nice to Leanne later in the pub, telling her how worried he and Janice have been.

Linda gives Dev a hard time in the shop, but Mike turns out to be the unlikely voice of reason, reminding Linda that there are two sides to every story, and that no-one really knows what goes on in another couple's relationship. They meet Mark and Clare in the Rovers and Mike railroads them into going for a meal with him and Linda. Linda does all she can to make Mark feel uncomfortable; 'Yes Mark, do tell Clare what _we_ do at the factory....' Mark goes to the gents and Linda makes an excuse and follows him in there. She pins him against the sink and kisses him passionately. Then she stops abruptly and walks out, leaving Mark looking stunned. Linda returns to the table looking flushed and tells Mike she feels unwell. Her and Mike go home, with Mike leaving a credit card for Mark to pay for the meal with. [What's he expect him to do - forge the signature?]

Jerry hangs around the hospital and sees Rebecca and Martin together at lunchtime. Rebecca makes it clear she will not talk to him. That evening he visits Gail; she reluctantly lets him into the house and he immediately tells her that Rebecca and Martin are having an affair. Gail is sceptical about it, laughing and saying he has no proof. Her dislike of him is clear, and she accuses him of trying to stir up trouble then tells him to leave. Jerry has a final dig on his way out by taunting her that of course Martin is much younger than her, isn't he? When Martin returns home, Gail tells him how angry she was at Jerry coming to her home making accusations. Martin is about to go round and sort him out, but Gail calmly tells him to sit down. He looks worried. Gail admits that at one time she did think there was something going on between him and Rebecca. Now, however, she realises that it is all down to Jerry stirring things up. Provided that she and Martin still love each other, then Jerry can't touch them. Gail kisses Martin tenderly. Martin looks rather puzzled, but has his wits about him enough to kiss her back. Credits.

No time to do a critique this week I'm afraid. Besides, what could I say about the assorted women tonight? Between the barm-pots (Amy, Nita, Linda) and the idiots (Sally, Rebecca, Gail) there's only Toyah who is preserving the credibility of the female characters! Come back, Big Red, and let's have some gentle humour with Norris.

Wednesday 26 January

Friday 28 January
Sunday 30 January

A little late this week due to a prior engagement with a concert (how come the Corrie youngsters are not regularly attending rock concerts at G-Mex?). Apologies. The dog is under the desk and the video appears to be working normally again, so on with the action.

Written by Stephen Bennett
Directed by Colin Cant

At the Rovers Leanne is still worried about Amy. Vera and Betty try to pour oil on troubled waters. Leanne is convinced that the letter is meant seriously. Over at the Corner Shop Dev and Nita are not worried and Janice is given fairly short shrift. Nothing would surprise Dev as far as Amy is concerned! Dev decides to take a lunchtime drink in the Rovers with Nita.

Sarah Lou and Candice Stowe bored and skint. The solution is for Candice to get a paper round. Sarah Louise will put in a word with Norris. Later Candice in an extremely charmless way asks for a paper round (not even a please). Norris admits that they are short staffed and providing she can demonstrate knowledge of the local area he might employ her. {What happened to the storyline where Candice was bullying poor little Sarah Lou - did it get resolved?}.

Natalie and Vinny return. He is noticeably tanned and they have obviously settled their differences!! Natalie gives very little information on the events on holiday - but the staff have to mind their own business and Natalie is still the boss. Leanne and Betty have to update them on the Amy saga (enough to ruin anyone's holiday). Later Natalie thanks Jim for looking after the Rovers (deservedly - a good job done). Jim then gives G'(will never let him get his legover again) another public apology for his behaviour but she refuses to let him buy a drink.

Tyrone (having been told quite sharply by Duggie that Tom has left permanently) is round at Ken's practising his reading. The subject matter this week is a book on greyhounds and looking after them.

Mike summons Mark to Weatherfield Quays for a meeting. Linda lets him and demands to know why he is there. Mark thinks that Mike has guessed what happened!! They have a fruitless discussion and are then both stunned when Mike announces that uniquely he is going to cook a proper Sunday lunch for the family! Can Mark open the wine?

**************************
Advert break - soups, mobile phones, a radio station advert (starring a dog - woke mine up), cars, a newspaper and an insurer seek to get their message across.
**************************

Natalie wants to know if the counselling is working. Leanne says that the talking is helping but achieving the goals is proving hard and Leanne says she has not taken anything. Natalie is being tough for her own good.

Mark hardly touches his food but it has turned out well. Linda says that he has to do it every week in future, although Mike suggests Mark should have a go. Both Mike and Linda raise a glass to Mark's presence in Weatherfield. Mark tentatively agrees to cook. Mike goes off for a round of golf while Mark does the washing up. Linda decides to go for a drink at the Rovers.

Audreh is moaning the departure of Tom to Natalie and suddenly realises that Duggie is listening. He is equally unhappy over Tom's departure but points out that it was his son, not an employee and anyway hairdressers must be "two a penny" in Weatherfield.

Vera and Leanne start calling Dev when he arrives with Nita and they are pointedly ignored until Natalie intervenes to serve them with drinks and food. Nita seeks to re-assure Dev who is admitting to being a little worried over crackpot Amy. They depart when Vera has another go at Dev.

Jim finds Gwen in the pub and she has a go about his behaviour. "Go away, you annoy me" are her final words. Natalie and Vinny decide to go out to a new tapas bar - almost still on holiday. (Who brewed Vinny's velvet when they were on holiday?). Ken tries to engage Duggie in a chat but he wanders off.

Mark and Linda arrive in the Street. She suggests she helps tidy the flat. Mark wants to get some things done. Linda squeezes his leg, making it clear just what she believes he wants to get done - her. Mark refuses to entertain her and tells her to go to the Rovers. He relents as she is getting cold and they go into the flat. Once there Linda promises not to jump him and then does! Linda goes into the bedroom and find that Mark is packing to leave the Street.

Another low action episode with no great humour either. Please can we have some comedy? Tyrone's ability to read seems to come and go - he was in the Kabin reading magazines a couple of weeks back, now he is struggling again. Sadly Linda's behaviour seems hard to comprehend and I hope we shall not lose Mark - I reckon that he is doing well. Amy cannot be around long term, fruitcakes get eaten quickly in this house. And Leanne - I hoped we might get some regular reports or visits from the counsellor (although the wrong sex to attract me) but it appears not.

Anyway 2 out of 5 again this week. (I nearly reduced it to 1)

Monday 31 January

Candice isn't relishing her new job as a papergirl. Sarah-Lou warns her that it gets worse before it gets better! Sarah-Lou pointedly fails to finish eating her packet of crisps.

Pat the builder goes off to sort out a client who he obviously left in the lurch with no plumbing. Steve tells him to be quick and not to let Duggie find out.

Mark tells Linda he will give his dad an explanation but still intends to leave town. Mike is upset and can't understand why Mark wants to leave Weatherfield and his partnership in the factory. Mike asks Linda why Mark would want to run away from a good life. She saya she has no idea. Mike tells Mark he doesn't want him to go, and Linda agrees. Mark is adamant, and assures Mike that it is not him, not the factory, not Claire - he has just decided he has to go.

Dev is sure Amy is alive and well, hiding out and waiting. He tells Vik how he has been duped by her in the past. He says that previously in Birmingham, she conned him into staying close to her by pretending she had a sister who was in hospital dying of leukemia. The sister was entirely ficticious. Vik says anyone crazy enough to make something like that up is crazy enough to kill themself!

Les makes fun of Tyrone for not being able to read properly. Les's attack is vicious and not in his usual character, referring to Tyrone as 'Dog-Boy'. Toyah tries to get Les to leave Tyrone alone but fails. Tyrone flees in embarrassment.

Duggie confides in Natalie that he feels very upset at the way Tom has left. He realises, however, that drowning his sorrows isn't going to help.

The police call at Vera and Jack's in connection with Amy's disappearance. A body has been found and they need someone to identify it. Vera gets upset and tells them that Dev is Amy's ex-fiance. They take him to identify the woman. Vera hot foots it to the Rovers to inform Leanne and Natalie of the latest development, that Dev has gone to identify the body. Then follows the line which had me literally laughing out loud - and that doesn't happen often! Vinny offers Vera a drink, and she replies 'You'd better make it a stiff one!'

Martin tells Rebecca he loves her and wants to leave Gail for her. The hardest thing he must do is explain it to the kids - sometime. Rebecca says she wants to spend the rest of her life with him, although she did not force him to choose. She assures Martin there is no pressure on him - and no rush.

Dev returns to the shop, having said that the body was not Amy. His mood has completely changed. He is visibly upset by the experience of seeing the unknown dead girl, only about the same age as Vik, who went into the canal with no identification. He decides to go to the Rovers and tell them the news. Leanne rounds on him that he is not off the hook yet - Amy is still missing and it is his fault. Dev retaliates a little, but then retreats with his dignity intact.

All in all, not a very good episode. I thought the bits with Pat, Duggie and Les were particularly not credible. Pat wouldn't have left the cafe half way through his breakfast - he would have sat the woman down with a cup of tea and finished his beans. Duggie and Natalie was a bit soppy - though we could see that Vinny was looking a bit possessive over his woman sat talking to another man. Les's attack on Tyrone just didn't come across very convincingly. Sorry, that's just how I saw it. The funny line about a stiff drink on top of saying someone had gone to see a body was just priceless though. That made up for a lot! [OK, so I've got bad taste - I don't care!] I also liked the Martin and Rebecca bits. Dev showed he could act, and moved that story on a bit. The rest was just filler - oh, and (spoiler) the first pointed refusal of food by Sarah-Lou.

That's all for this week, Helen
