Episode 16 - Wednesday 1 February 1961
All the residents descend on the Mission Hall. Ena refuses to look after them, annoying Swindley. He discovers she has been in the Rovers again. Harry discovers one of Jack's love letters to Annie on the floor to Annie's embarrassment. The residents have to spend the night on the floor and reminisce about the blitz until they are given the all clear.

There is a police constable in the Rovers arguing with Mrs. Sharples. He is explaining that there is a gas main broken and several fires in the area threatening the backs of the houses on Coronation Street. He insists the residents who must all be evacuated, camp out in the mission hall for the night. It's an official evacuation but Ena is having none of it. They are messing up "her" clean floor over her dead body! She decides to wait for the superintendent but the constable makes the official announcement anyway to those in the pub to go home and pack their bits and pieces and meet at the hall. They are instructed to leave their doors open bur are assured the police will be patrolling closely. Ena protests again but is astonished to hear that the mission chairman, Mr. Swindly has already agreed to it. Harry Hewitt persuades Len to look after his dogs for the night against Len's better judgment, afraid of his wife, Nellie's reaction.

Elsie searches for her lipstick because she can't let "that lot" see her first thing in the morning without her face on! She finally locates in as her son-in-law Ivan brings down blankets and pillows for all including the absent Dennis. Elsie insists on bringing her wedding photo, reminding Linda that even *she* has her memories, "ya know".

More pillows are being rounded up at the pub. Annie slips a packet of what looks to be letters in her pocket as Concepta and jack come through with more linens. Jack has his bowls bag with him much to Annie's consternation that it means more to him than she does. They argue, with Annie asking for assurances that he'd pick her over his bowls if it came down to it in an emergency. Jack scowls at her nagging and reckons he'd probably pick the bowls if he thought she would be like this the rest of their lives! He tries to assure her but she is tetchy that true words are often spoken in jest. Billy Walker and Concepta come though just as Jack is speculating that Mrs. Sharples will not allow Concepta's radio which causes and about face just so Annie can be contrary to him and she defends Concepta and will also do so if Ena causes trouble! The women head out and Billy and his father have a sigh about women but when Billy moans, his father sharply scolds him for talking like that about his mother (after nearly doing it himself in so many words!). Right, off they go.

In the hall, Miss Emily Nugent is clearing the carefully arranged chairs out of the hall under Mr. Swindley's supervision. They hear Ena arrive in the vestry so Mr. Swindley decides not to put off the inevitable and goes to talk to her. Since Ena was supposed to be visiting a sick friend, Mr. S. asks after the invalid. Ena passes that off, she is still displeased about the camp out but Mr. Sl insists it's only right they should extend the hand of friendship to their neighbours in a time like this, even if they aren't congregation. Offer that hand of friendship, offers a surly Ena, and they'll bite it off and she is still staunchly opposed to the whole plan. Outranked and outnumbered, it is pointed out that she is not a member of the congregation either thought she is allowed to live in the vestry as the Mission's caretaker. Just then, Jack Walker knocks on her door and returns the gloves she left in the bar. Mr. Swindley is appalled at both the deception about her sick friend and the fact that she was in the pub! The Mission board distinctly disapproves of strong drink. Caught out, she looks every so slightly sheepish but very defensive as she *did* visit a poorly Mrs. Caldwell after leaving the pub.

Jack and Annie Walker, a uniformed Billy and Concepta, the live-in barmaid arrive first and so get the first and best pick of places to lay their heads. they choose near the stage, likely to be less drafty. Mr. Swindley emerges from the vestry wiping the sweat from his brow, recovering from his confrontation with Mrs. Sharples. He gratefully accepts support from Miss Nugent and then sends her off to make tea for their visitors. He proceeds to the door to welcome the Barlows and Mr. Tatlock. They settle in as Harry Hewitt arrives. He and jack wonder if they can smoke in the hall and decide the better of it. Mrs. Walker suspiciously wonders what they are whispering about. "Nothing!" Aye well that's a subject you know plenty about, she retorts. Ida fusses and worries she may have forgotten to turn the gas off under the kettle but Frank puts her fears to rest. He remembered. Next through the door are Christine Hardman, Florrie Lindley and Esther Hayes and they settle next to the Barlow party. Ida Barlow is very kind to Christine about the recent death of her mother.

Miss Nugent arrives with a tray of teacups but first, Mr. Swindly must officially welcome the little group of neighbours, hoping they will find a safe haven in the mission. I think he's about to launch into an impromptu and inspiring (he hopes) sermon when the peaceful haven he spoke about is rudely invaded by the noise of the arrival of the boisterous Tanner clan with Ivan toting the family telly.

Later, before Miss Nugent and Mr. Swindley leave, there is another argument with Mrs. Sharples in which old bones are picked - Mrs. Sharples being accused of skiving off her work, leaving Miss Nugent to set up the hall for Sunday services only to do all the work clearing it up again when the emergency was declared. She is also taken to task for visiting the pub but since it is obvious there is just no talking to her, Mr. Swindley and Miss Nugent leave. Soon after, Ena hears sounds of music wafting through the vestry door and she tries to bully them into turning it off but Elsie stands up to her. Ena sees she's outnumbered once Jack slyly mentions that if they aren't welcome at her house, she might find she's not welcome in his (the pub). She backs down, threatening and mumbling that she can always find another pub to drink in and slinks back into the vestry leaving a group of laughing neighbours behind.

Everyone makes preparations for the night. Linda plans to sleep in her clothes but Elsie doesn't want to crease her dress as she has to wear it for work so she makes Ivan and Linda hold up a blanket around her so she can change. Harry interrupts Albert Tatlock's reminiscences about the Blitz to cadge a match. Albert then continues to describe to the Barlow lads the way things were in bomb shelters during the war when everyone pulled together in a new found camaraderie. Funny how his stories seem much more interesting than those of Percy Sugden of later years in Corrie history. Food is passed around. Jack nearly asphyxiates himself from trying to smoke beneath a blanket and Ena pops in to give the 5 minute to lights out warning. Harry gets an alarm clock from someone as he needs to be the first up in the morning and David Barlow offers to be rooster to the rest, chalking the wake up times on the floor beside each person. (Ena won't like that!) The constable arrives to announce that the crisis should be over by morning so only one night in the hall will be necessary.

In a touching scene, Mrs. Walker is still cool toward her husband. (no, not that, but what follows...) A scrap of an old love letter is found and read out loud by Harry who thinks it might have belonged to Ena but it is snatched away by Jack Walker. He recognizes it as one he wrote to Annie during the war and realizes she's brought all his letters to her with her. He admits he kept all hers to him as well and shows her a packet of tied letters similar to hers, hidden away in his bowls bag! AWWW. They remember one particular leave ("Ee it was a grand leave" Jack says softly) that seems to have resulted in their son Billy, hinted by the way they both fondly glance over at his sleeping form. Looks like things are all warm and fuzzy between them once again (well, as much as they could be!) Even though everyone is settling down for the night, there is a protest when the lights are abruptly turned off.

Much later, in the wee hours, a clock strikes three and Dennis arrives at Number 11. He is prevented from entering by a constable. Dennis is immediately defensive, protesting his innocence, not letting the policeman get a word of explanation in at first. He is finally told about the evacuation and led over to and let into the Mission hall. He creeps about trying to avoid the bodies. Elsie wakes, hearing her pup's voice and lights a match to lead him to the family's nest.

Early the next morning, Harry creeps out to work, meeting a constable at the door who tells him that all is clear. Harry leaves the constable to wake everyone up, Let's be having ya, get out of bed! They all groan at the early hour and stiffness from sleeping on the floor, too, no doubt. He knocks on the vestry door with a grin, to waken Ena along with the others and gets the door slammed in his face for his trouble.

Episode 108 - Monday 25 December 1961
The men go to see the ladies football team, the corinthians. Dennis is bored as Elsie mopes. Minnie entertains Ena and Martha, choking Ena with sixpences in her pudding. Harry buys Concepta a gold watch. Albert, Frank and Ken spend the day together. When their TV goes wrong the Hewitts have to watch the Queen at the Walkers'. Dennis spends Christmas day with Jed not knowing that Elsie has prepared a feast for him. He gets round her by taking her to the pictures.

Merry Yule, All, it's Christmas Day 1961 in Weatherfield! There's a ladies' football match being played with all proceeds to charity and a number of the male residents on the street are planning to attend, leaving the women home to cook the Christmas goose. A few children amble down the street, blowing on brand new whistles. They are scolded by Elsie Tanner from out her upstairs window but she is given cheek in return. Mr. Tatlock arrives to pick up Frank and Kenneth, who is decked out quite gaily in a bright team scarf (well it looks bright, this is black and white, remember! ) Merry Christmas's are exchanged. Dennis pops out the door, still in his pyjamas, and a very loud and cheerful Len swings round the corner, cheering and spinning a noisemaker. He's given some stick for the amount of alcohol he had to drink the night before and really does seem more cheerful than he ought to be the morning after! Raw egg and a drop of vinegar did the trick! (Yuck!)

The lads try to get Dennis to come with them. He doesn't have the time to change though and has something else on, he says. Elsie comes out the window again and is flirted with by Len but she's just wishing for a bit of peace like the song says, "Peace on Earth". The men turn and knock on the Hewitts' door next and burst into a rousing chorus of Noel for Concepta's benefit. She's not impressed. (well if they could have all sang the same words at the same time to the same tune, maybe...) Harry is worse for the wear with his hangover, shudders at the overly enthusiastic welcome on his doorstep but gets no sympathy from his long suffering wife. (Well she met him in a bar, what did she expect! LOL) Len offers his flask, a hair of the dog but Harry is even past stomaching that. There is more high spirited clowning as Annie passes and is pulled into a rousing dance on the pavement by Len and is given a kiss on the cheek for luck as well. She doesn't seem to mind at all! Top girl, that! (now and then!) The men finally get on their way, Concepta reminding Harry to be back at 1:30 for dinner.

Annie and Concepta are joined on the step by Elsie and there are discussions of turkey stuffing and Christmas pudding sauces. Elsie avoids specifying what she's making, "a bird, yes." and they are soon joined by Florrie Lindley on her way back from church. Concepta and Annie rush inside at the smells of something burning, giving Elsie a chance at a quiet word with Florrie. She begs Florrie to sell her something from the shop freezer for dinner, a chicken perhaps? peas? She didn't get anything for her and Dennis as it happens and in the true spirit of the day, Elsie generously agrees to open the shop temporarily.

Concepta and Annie are in the Hewitt cupboard... er... kitchen and contemplating the turkey over which Concepta has a good fuss. Annie offers gravy making tips and a bottle of wine. Newlywed Concepta is worried about her first Christmas dinner coming out ok. A bit more small talk and moaning about Harry going off with the lads is exchanged. Annie gives her the benefit of her experience, "We send them off like children and are stuck back doing all the work for five minutes guzzling and are they grateful?" (apparently we are to assume the answer is "no"! )

In the Rovers, Jack Walker is whipping up a pudding and adding the rum from a bottle on the shelf. Dennis comes in to wish Merry Christmas and to get out of his mother's way. Mrs. Longhurst also arrives to order milk stouts to take out to Mrs. Caldwell's, who is the chief cook for the ladies' dinner today. Ena arrives behind her in her usual grumpy fashion. she's had to get out of Minnie's way. She won't be helped and she's in there surrounded by blue smoke and feathers with her mother nagging instructions from the top of the stair. (LOL can't you picture it!) Dennis can't resist giving her a cheeky kiss on the jowl. She glares but lets it pass and takes Martha into the snug while Dennis turns and asks to use the pub telephone. We hear him trying to worm his way into good standing with an acquaintance but isn't very successful. The ladies have egg nogs while Dennis jokes he may end up having to take Ena out tonight!

A bit later, Concepta has a look out for Harry who is still not back. She goes in just as the men come merrily around the corner. Len tries to get the rest to go for a drink, seemingly avoiding the dinner Nelly's cooked. Harry says it's more than his life's worth if he doesn't get inside! Since Esther's cooking for Albert and the Barlow men, Len is on his own.

Concepta is near to tears over her gravy results and owly at both harry and lucille for taking off to parts unknown all morning. Harry smoothes her ruffled feathers with a belated gift of a gold watch!

Ena says Grace and the ladies get stuck in. Ena has a sharp word for her daughter not showing up and Martha moans that her Lily didn't bring the grandbaby round. Minnie hasn't any family to visit, she says wistfully but the three reaffirm their friendship. Martha admiringly points out that women like Ena don't grow on trees. Minnie seems truly grateful for that. (and there does seem to be a rather judicious tone of voice behind *that* little statement) Minnie suggests it's time to pull the crackers and wear their paper hats. Wot for! mithers Minnie! Ena snaps (with not a trace or a crack of a smile), Cause it's fun!!! In one of those gestures that you know must have been made up out of years of tradition, the ladies cross their arms to grab the ends of the crackers each is holding and pull the ends, all the while bantering back and forth like hens. (A true gem of a scene, was this!)

Albert is clearing up the plates after a satisfying dinner with Ken and Frank who passes round cheroots to smoke. Ken offers to get some nuts to keep them sober. Sober they certainly are once he says that, as it was something the dear departed Ida used to say. They all pause for a moment to remember her fondly. Frank reminds Albert that it's the first Christmas he hasn't had to work in years and Ida's not there to enjoy it! (she had been run down by a bus earlier in the year so this would be the first Christmas without her. Always difficult) Ken brings over a bottle and Albert stands up to begin his traditional recitation of Christmas Day in the Workhouse but can't remember past the second line. Ken pours drinks, strong stuff, reckons Albert. Before you know it, I might run out and pinch Ena Sharples' bum!

Ena at that moment is choking on something in the pudding. None of the other two are quite brave enough to hit Ena on the back! It transpires that Minnie had baked four sixpence coins wrapped up in cotton in the batter for good luck! They each search their pudding and only three are found! Uh oh! Minnie diverts them by telling them they're all going to Martha's to watch the Queen on the newly fixed telly.

Everyone else is getting ready for the broadcast as well only the telly at the Hewitts seems to be on the blink so they rush round to the Walkers where Annie hasn't yet had her dinner as it is just closing time now. She wipes glasses and looks forward to the Queen and a glass of cherry brandy. But she'll have to have regular brandy, she is informed as they are all out, sold the last at 1 o'clock. Annie is disappointed but she settles in. They take their brandies to the living quarters as the Hewitts arrive. The men are made to stand at attention while the National Anthem plays. Harry and Jack roll their eyes and give each other that look that says "Women!"

Down at number 11, Elsie waits impatiently for Dennis. He finally strolls in and receives the sharp end of her tongue. (He must have found somewhere to go) Jenny's as it happens because he announces he's already eaten. That only infuriates his mother more having gone to all that trouble and now having waited her dinner 2 hours for him to show up. She makes him sit down for a dose of guilt (his sister's in Canada, his father's scarpered, you may be nowt but you're all I've got!) A second dinner it is! It won't choke him... much. He mutters about boredom and gets a lashing for his ingratitude. They holler back and forth until finally Dennis manages a forkful and an apology by way of offering to take her to the pictures. They exchange gifts with a smile.
