Gary was a handfull, a lad getting into all sorts of trouble when we first met him. He idolized his tough Uncle Len who had plenty of dodgey friends and deal on. Before the family moved to Coronation Street, they had hired Joe McIntyre to refit their kitchen and then refused to pay for it. David then came back and trashed the kitchen. When the Windasses moved to Number 6 Coronation Street, they were thus already at odds with neighbours Gail and Joe McIntyre and Gail's son David. David and Gary exchanged plenty of aggro, in addition, David believing Gary had his eyes on David's girlfriend Tina. Gary wound up David so much that he goaded David into a fight and put David in hospital. Gary was sent to prison for that attack because David lied in court and said Gary threw the first punch.

When Gary came out of jail, David lured him into being mates and set him up with a house robbery that turned out to be Audrey's house and Ted Page saw Gary as he was running out of the house. Ted had a heart attack though recovered and even though David eventually admitted he set Gary up, Gary still went to prison.

When David was found very badly beaten, everyone assumed Gary had done it in revenge but Gary had not got out of prison until the day after, though he had hinted that he'd been responsible for the attack. He and David eventally made peace.

Gary was at odds and after being disrespectful about the November 11 Armistice Day events, was called on it in no uncertain terms by Ted Paige (Gail's father). He began to be interested in the military and eventually joined the army. He spent some time in Afghanistan and came home injured and traumatized after seeing his best friend, Quinny, be killed. Quinny saved Gary's life, sacrificing his own and Gary felt a lot of guilt over it. He suffered a serious case of post traumatic stress and on the night of the tram crash, was shaking in the house with flashbacks instead of being able to help.

Gary started dating Izzy Armstrong as he recovered and they eventually moved in together but his Post Traumatic Stress resurfaced and he became over protective of wheelchair bound Izzy and had a breakdown. Izzy left him because she was afraid of what he might do. He began councilling and slowly got his life back together, working for Izzy's father Owen as a builder. He and Izzy got back together at Christmas 2011.

Gary has since become a sort of big brother figure to Chesney. He and Izzy discovered they were going to have a baby but because of Izzy's Ehler's syndrome, she was worried she might not carry the baby to term. She had a miscarraige and was afraid to try again so they looked into adoption. They weren't suited and decided to look into getting someone to carry their baby as a surrogate mother. Izzy's sister Katy offered though her partner, Chesney objected. In the end, Owen persuaded Tina McIntyre to do it for a fee. She needed the money to help boyfriend Tommy out of debt. Tina carried the baby and Gary supported her enthusiastically all the way, even becoming so overwhelmed by his feelings that he developed a crush on Tina and tried to kiss her one night. She pushed him away though didn't tell Izzy. But Izzy's sister Katy and Ryan Connor overheard Tina and Gary talking about the incident. They were persuaded not to say anything but Izzy found out on the day that Tina went into premature labour and told Gary she wanted him gone, and would not let him have anything to do with the baby, a wee boy, at first.

Gary was heartbroken and tried to make it up to Izzy. He was also furious when it looked as if Tina was going to keep the baby rather than give him to a couple that had split up. Izzy and Gary patched things up for the sake of the baby and because they did still love each other. Tina eventually gave them the little boy whom they named Jake and life has been moving along nicely since then.
