Arthur Dabner was the newly promoted chief accountant at the firm
Derek Wilton worked for.
After being turned down by "DP" (Derek's boss) and then
Ray (the Personnel Manager), Derek Wilton invited Arthur to a
dinner party. Derek thought Arthur wasn't married, and so Mavis
invited Emily Bishop to make up
the numbers. The dinner party was not a success, but Arthur and
Emily got on very well and they decided to keep in touch.
The next day Arthur phoned Emily and they met in the evening for
a meal and later went to see a film. They kept on seeing each
other for some time, but after a while Arthur revealed that he
was married but was separated from his wife. At first Emily was
shocked and did not know whether she would go on seeing Arthur,
but she did.
One Sunday they had arranged to go on a picnic. Emily had prepared
the food, but Arthur suddenly rang and said that something had
turned up at the office had to cancel. Emily was disappointed
but accepted that work comes first. Arthur, however, wasn't going
to the office, and instead went picnicing with his wife. Unfortunately
for Arthur they met Percy Sugden
who recognized him.
Arthur, believing that Percy had told Emily, phoned Emily the
next day and wanted to see her right away. Emily who hadn't been
told by Percy, was glad when Arthur phoned. But she was not so
happy when Arthur told her the truth - that he had been with his
wife and that they were trying to make their marriage work again.
So he said goodbye and wished that he and Emily always could be
friends.
