Paul Maxwell was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1921. He trained as a medical student and during World War II served in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was then appointed as Entertainments Administration Officer. At the end of the war Paul made his first visit to the UK and met Scottish actress Mary Lindsay and they fell in love. After Demob, Paul enrolled at Yale University and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts. He then became a teacher.

In 1956 he quit teaching and moved to Hollywood where he appeared in the films Follow The Boys, City of Fear and We Joined The Navy, he also made television appearances in Highway Patrol and Bronco. Other films included Blood of Dracula, Submarine Seahawk, How To Make A Monster, The Haunting, Captain Scarlet, It and Fireball XL5. In 1961 he returned to England where he appeared on television in The Saint, The Baron, The Adventurer, UFO, The Champions, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), The Pursuers, Court Martial, Odd Job Man, Howards Way, The Naked Sun, Pollyanna, Quiller, Partners, One By One, Emmerdale Farm, Man and Boy, Cuckoo Waltz, Killer Contract, Man At The Top and Tales of Mystery. In 1966 he joined Coronation Street as Steve Tanner and remained with the series until his characters death in 1970. Paul's other film credits include Freedom To Die, Athens 1896, Madam Sin, The Pink Panther and Baxter.

Paul continually appeared on stage in productions including Othello, The Apple Cart, The Boyfriend, The Price, Night Watch, Gypsy, Cole, Promises Promises and Grass Roots. One of his final stage appearances was alongside Charlton Heston in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. His final television series was as Barrington Cabot in Sleepers.

Paul died on 19 December 1991 at the age of seventy, his actress wife Mary Lindsay survived him.
