Nick appeared in school productions such as My Fair Lady and Willy Russell's Our Day Out - which was performed at Manchester's Forum Theatre. He also played an extra in Coronation Street as a boy playing football. He was educated at Cheadle Comprehensive School in Stockport.

Nick had desires to become a photographer but was asked to audition for a role in Coronation Street, he jumped at the chance. Nick joined fellow schoolmate Simon Gregson to play twins Andy and Steve McDonald and they made their Coronation Street debut on 6 December 1989. Nick left school the following year in 1990. He has also made appearances on This Morning, Classic Coronation Street, GMTV, TVam, Five's Company along with various pantomimes. Nick was axed from the Street in 1997 but there are plans for a return.

He has since appeared on Channel 5 and in the drama series Heartbeat. He no longer lives with his parents in Cheadle but lives with his fiancee Denise Willis and their dogs - Labrador puppy Bens and golden retriever Baily. Previously, Nick had been linked with model Amanda Clay Domar. Nick is still a member of the Coronation Street Charity Soccer Team and is also a keen Manchester United fan - and has worked for MUTV.
